A Probable Origin of Dibenzothiophenes in Coals and Oils
Yu Ji, Qiang Yao, Weihong Cao, Yueying Zhao
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aromatic sulfur heterocyclics, dibenzothiophene, homolysis, hydroarylation, phenyldibenzothiophene, thiophenolate
To probe the possibility of thiophenolate as an origin of dibenzothiophenes (DBTs) and establish the detailed chemical transformations from thiophenolate to DBTs, the thermal degradation of thiophenolate has been carried out at various temperatures. The characterizations of both gaseous products and solid residues indicate that DBTs together with benzene, diphenyl sulfide, and diphenyl disulfide are the major degradation products. The presence of benzene supports that the thermal degradation of thiophenolate begins with the homolysis of Ar‒H bonds. The subsequent hydroarylation followed by the elimination and cyclization reactions facilely generates DBTs. The transformation of thiophenolate to DBTs is chemically simple and highly geochemically feasible. It readily unifies the chemical pathways involved in the generation of DBTs from thiophenolate and that of dibenzofurans from phenolate in nature.
Biometric Data as Real-Time Measure of Physiological Reactions to Environmental Stimuli in the Built Environment

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: biometric data, biosignals, comfort, environmental stimuli, health, non-intrusive sensing, physiological metrics, stress detection
The physiological and cognitive effects of environmental stimuli from the built environment on humans have been studied for more than a century, over short time frames in terms of comfort, and over long-time frames in terms of health and wellbeing. The strong interdependence of objective and subjective factors in these fields of study has traditionally involved the necessity to rely on a number of qualitative sources of information, as self-report variables, which however, raise criticisms concerning their reliability and precision. Recent advancements in sensing technology and data processing methodologies have strongly contributed towards a renewed interest in biometric data as a potential high-precision tool to study the physiological effects of selected stimuli on humans using more objective and real-time measures. Within this context, this review reports on a broader spectrum of available and advanced biosensing techniques used in the fields of building engineering, human physiolo... [more]

Widuramina Amarasinghe, Ingebret Fjelde, Nils Giske, Ying Guo
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 3-dimensional column, CO2 dissolution, convection, oil, porous media, reservoir conditions
During CO2 storage, CO2 plume mixes with the water and oil present at the reservoir, initiated by diffusion followed by a density gradient that leads to a convective flow. Studies are available where CO2 convective mixing have been studied in water phase but limited in oil phase. This study was conducted to reach this gap, and experiments were conducted in a vertically packed 3-dimensional column with oil-saturated unconsolidated porous media at 100 bar and 50 °C (representative of reservoir pressure and temperature conditions). N-Decane and crude oil were used as oils, and glass beads as porous media. A bromothymol blue water solution-filled sapphire cell connected at the bottom of the column was used to monitor the CO2 breakthrough. With the increase of the Rayleigh number, the CO2 transport rate in n-decane was found to increase as a function of a second order polynomial. Ra number vs. dimensionless time τ had a power relationship in the form of Ra = c×τ−n. The overall pre... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: “Mój Prąd”, “My Electricity”, grant, photovoltaics, Poland, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, renewable energy grants, renewable energy policy, renewable energy sources, renewable energy support
There are a lot of studies that show the legitimacy of subsidizing renewable energy; however, some mechanisms are defective, and there are problems with the appropriate allocation of funds. Therefore, this paper aims to look at the situation of allocating funds to photovoltaics (PV) micro-installations in Poland through the “My Electricity” program. The article presents the results of analyses aimed at identifying inequalities between provinces in the use of funds available under the “My Electricity” program and verifying whether these inequalities are getting worse and whether the intensity of support should not be territorially conditioned in terms of maximization an electricity production. As part of two editions of the “My Electricity” program (until 1 August 2020), over 64,000 PV micro-installations were created with an average power of approximately 5.7 kWp. The total installed PV capacity was 367.1 MWp (1st edition: 159.3 MWp, 2nd edition: 207.8 MWp). Financial resources (as a w... [more]

Taesu Jeon, Insu Paek
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fuzzy logic, linear quadratic regulator (LQR), variable speed variable pitch (VSVP), wind tunnel test, wind turbine scaled model
In this study, a linear quadratic regulator based on the fuzzy logic (LQRF) control algorithm for a variable-speed variable-pitch wind turbine was designed. In addition, to verify the optimum performance of the controller, simulations and wind tunnel tests were conducted. In the simulation, the performances of the proportional-integral (PI) and LQRF algorithms were compared in the transition region and the rated power region. In the wind tunnel test, the applicability of the LQRF algorithm was verified by comparing it with the conventional PI algorithms. The results showed that when compared with the PI control, the proposed LQRF control reduced the tower vibration by up to 12.50% depending on the operating region. Furthermore, the power deviation was reduced by 38.93%. These tests confirmed that the proposed LQRF control increases the power performance and structural stability of wind turbines compared with conventional PI controls.

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cascaded neural network, convolutional neural network (CNN), deep neural network (DNN), Machine Learning, off-grid direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation, sparse representation
This paper introduces an off-grid DoA estimation via two-stage cascaded network which can resolve a mismatch between true direction-of-arrival (DoA) and discrete angular grid. In the first-stage network, the initial DoAs are estimated with a convolutional neural network (CNN), where initial DoAs are mapped on the discrete angular grid. To deal with the mismatch between initially estimated DoAs and true DoAs, the second-stage network estimates a tuning vector which represents the difference between true DoAs and nearest discrete angles. By using tuning vector, the final DoAs are estimated by moving initially estimated DoAs as much as the difference between true DoAs and nearest discrete angles. The limitation on estimation accuracy induced by the discrete angular grid can be resolved with the proposed two-stage network so that the estimation accuracy can be further enhanced. Simulation results show that adding the second-stage network after the first-stage network helps improve the esti... [more]
Water Extraction from Air: A Proposal for a New Indicator to Compare Air Water Generators Efficiency
Lucia Cattani, Anna Magrini, Paolo Cattani
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air to water technology, atmospheric water condensation, coefficient of performance, energy efficiency ratio, refrigeration, water extraction
Water extraction from air, based on reverse cycle systems, is becoming a technology more and more diffused and various models of air to water generators (AWG) are now available, all claiming the best efficiency. To date, there is not a standard indicator stating energy efficiency for AWGs, neither in the literature nor in technical practice. The only evaluation parameter, that can be found is a sort of specific energy consumption (SEC) without any clear indications about the involved calculation terms, definition of hypotheses, or environmental conditions. The current work is a first proposal of an indicator to standardise the AWG efficiency evaluation. The indicator is called WET (Water Energy Transformation); it states water production as a useful effect of an AWG machine and calculates its energy performance with an approach similar to COP (Coefficient of Performance) and EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) evaluation. The indicator is meant to be a normalised tool that permits comparing... [more]

Milana Treshcheva, Irina Anikina, Vitaly Sergeev, Sergey Skulkin, Dmitry Treshchev
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electricity market, heat pumps, heat supply, thermal power plants
The percentage of heat pumps used in thermal power plants (TPPs) in the fuel and energy balance is extremely low in in most countries. One of the reasons for this is the lack of a systematic approach to selecting and justifying the circuit solutions and equipment capacity. This article aims to develop a new method of calculating the maximum capacity of heat pumps. The method proposed in the article has elements of marginal analysis. It takes into account the limitation of heat pump capacity by break-even operation at electric power market (compensation of fuel expenses, connected with electric power production). In this case, the heat pump’s maximum allowable capacity depends on the electric capacity of TPP, electricity consumption for own needs, specific consumption of conditional fuel for electricity production, a ratio of prices for energy resources, and a conversion factor of heat pump. For TPP based on combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) CCGT-450 with prices at the Russian energy re... [more]

Constantine Michailides
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combined energy structures, generalized modes, hydrodynamic analysis, offshore wind turbines, wave energy converters, WindWEC
During the past years, researchers have studied both numerically and experimentally multibody wave-wind combined energy structures supporting wind turbines and different types of Wave Energy Converters (WECs); rigid body hydrodynamic assumptions have been adopted so far for the development of their numerical models and the assessment of their produced power. In the present paper a numerical model that is based on the use of generalized modes addressing wave-structure interaction effects for the case of a multibody wave-wind combined structure is developed and presented. Afterwards, the developed numerical model is used for the assessment of the hydrodynamic response and the prediction of the produced power of different possible configurations of the updated WindWEC concept which consists of a spar supporting a wind turbine and one, two, three or four heaving type WEC buoys. The combined effects of the center-to-center distance of the WEC and spar platform, the number of the WECs and th... [more]
Off-Design Exergy Analysis of Convective Drying Using a Two-Phase Multispecies Model
Andrea Aquino, Pietro Poesio
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: drying, energy analysis, exergy analysis, multiphase model, multispecies model, thermodynamics
The design of a convective drying cycle could be challenging because its thermodynamic performance depends on a wide range of operating parameters. Further, the initial product properties and environmental conditions fluctuate during the production, affecting the final product quality, environmental impact, and energy usage. An off-design analysis distinguishes the effects of different parameters defining the setup with the best and more stable performance. This study analyzes a reference scenario configured as an existing system and three system upgrades to recover the supplied energy and avoid heat and air dumping in the atmosphere. We calculate their performance for different seasons, initial product moisture, input/output rate, and two products. The analysis comprises 16 simulation cases, the solutions of a two-phase multispecies Euler−Euler model that simulates the thermodynamic equilibrium in all components. Results discuss the combination of parameters that maximizes the evapora... [more]

Keywords: heat transfer fluid, parabolic-trough collector, quasi- dynamic model, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar energy
A simplified mathematical model of parabolic-trough solar thermal power plants, which allow one to carry out an energetic characterization of the main thermal parameters that influence the solar field performance, was evaluated through a comparison of simulation results. Two geographical locations were selected to evaluate the mathematical model proposed in this work—one in each hemisphere—and design considerations according with the practical/operational experience were taken. Furthermore, independent simulations were performed using the System Advisor Model (SAM) software, their results were compared with those obtained by the simplified model. According with the above, the mathematical model allows one to carry out simulations with a high degree of flexibility and adaptability, in which the equations that allow the plant to be energetically characterized are composed of a series of logical conditions that help identify boundary conditions between dawn and sunset, direct normal irrad... Active Filter Reference Calculations Based on Customers’ Current Harmonic Emissions
Aljaž Špelko, Boštjan Blažič, Igor Papič, Leopold Herman
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active filter reference, harmonic emission, power quality, reference impedances
This paper deals with harmonics compensation in industrial and distribution networks using an active filter (AcF). When defining the AcF’s reference current, it is important to properly consider the network background harmonic distortion. Within this paper, we propose an AcF reference current calculation method, based on customers’ current harmonic emissions. The main novelty of the paper is the AcF reference current calculation method that considers only the customer’s contributions to the harmonic distortion at the point of common coupling (PCC). By separating the harmonic current at the PCC into components that can be attributed to the customer and to the network, it is possible to limit the required AcF power. To determine the customer’s emission, the customer’s harmonic impedance must be known. As the actual harmonic impedance cannot be determined in a real environment, a reference harmonic impedance can be used instead. To test the proposed AcF reference current calculation metho... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: drawing characteristic, evolution process, FDM-DEM numerical model, longwall top coal caving
In longwall top coal caving (LTCC), the resource recovery ratio of the working face is directly determined by the top coal recovery ratio. An investigation of the evolution of top coal drawing characteristics and revealing the evolution of top coal drawing parameters is necessary when providing guidance for caving parameter selection and improving the top coal recovery ratio. Based on in-situ measurements of the size distribution of caved top coal blocks in Wangjialing coal mine, a finite difference method (FDM)−discrete element method (DEM) coupled method was applied to establish a “continuous−discontinuous” numerical model and the process from the first coal drawing to the common coal drawing was simulated with 17 separate working face advances. The evolution of the drawing body (DB), loose body (LB), and top coal boundary (TCB) was obtained. The results show that, the evolution of parameters of DB such as shape and size, drawing amount, length and deflection angle of the long axis o... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: battery, CLC filter, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, pseudo-random binary sequence, state of health, wireless power transfer
This paper presents the design procedure of an electric circuit that can perform the battery state diagnosis and, simultaneously, provide its charging. A fast and embedded impedance measurement method is also proposed; this is based on a broadband current signal excitation on the battery during the constant current charging phase. The proposed solution performs the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), which is known to provide useful information about battery chemical−physical property changes due to aging or failure events. To demonstrate the functionalities of the proposed method, the spectroscopy is implemented in the control in the wireless charging system. An EIS charging test is simulated on an equivalent circuit model, which emulates the battery impedance properties in a specified frequency band. Circuit parameters are evaluated by experimental data. According to the obtained results, the proposed method allows us to reach an accurate estimation of the battery state and... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery electric vehicles, emissions, policies, public transport
Environmental problems such as air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions are especially challenging in urban areas. Electric mobility in different forms may be a solution. While in recent years a major focus was put on private electric vehicles, e-mobility in public transport is already a very well-established and mature technology with a long history. The core objective of this paper is to analyze the economics of e-mobility in the Austrian capital of Vienna and the corresponding impact on the environment. In this paper, the historical developments, policy framework and scenarios for the future development of mobility in Vienna up to 2030 are presented. A major result shows that in an ambitious scenario for the deployment of battery electric vehicles, the total energy demand in road transport can be reduced by about 60% in 2030 compared to 2018. The major conclusion is that the policies, especially subsidies and emission-free zones will have the largest impact on the future developme... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coal macrolithotype, coalbed methane, geophysical logging, PCA methodology, Zhengzhuang field
Coal macrolithotypes control the reservoir heterogeneity, which plays a significant role in the exploration and development of coalbed methane. Traditional methods for coal macrolithotype evaluation often rely on core observation, but these techniques are non-economical and insufficient. The geophysical logging data are easily available for coalbed methane exploration; thus, it is necessary to find a relationship between core observation results and wireline logging data, and then to provide a new method to quantify coal macrolithotypes of a whole coal seam. In this study, we propose a L-Index model by combing the multiple geophysical logging data with principal component analysis, and we use the L-Index model to quantitatively evaluate the vertical and regional distributions of the macrolithotypes of No. 3 coal seam in Zhengzhuang field, southern Qinshui basin. Moreover, we also proposed a S-Index model to quantitatively evaluate the general brightness of a whole coal seam: the increa... [more]

Keywords: Abaqus, blast, damping systems, energy absorbers, impact, sandwich panels, shock
The need for more effective defence systems is of critical importance because of the rising risk of explosive attacks. Sandwich panels are used as plastically deforming sacrificial structures, absorbing blast wave energy. To the authors’ knowledge, the blast behaviour of sandwich panels with connected (welded/bolted/riveted) corrugated layers has been well covered in literature. Hence, the aim of this numerical study was to develop new, easy-to-build, non-expensive, graded sandwich panel with ‘unconnected’ corrugated layers that can be used as a multipurpose sacrificial protective structure against wide range of blast threats. The proposed sandwich panel is composed of six unconnected aluminium (AL6063-T4) core layers encased in a steel (Weldox 460E) frame with 330 × 330 × 150 mm overall dimensions. The numerical analysis was conducted using Abaqus/Explicit solver. First, the performance of four different nongraded layer topologies (trapezoidal, triangular, sinusoidal, and rectangular)... [more]
Understanding Membrane Fouling in Electrically Driven Energy Conversion Devices
Soo-Jin Han, Jin-Soo Park
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: energy conversion device, fouling, ion-exchange membrane, reverse electrodialysis
Positively charged (cetylpyridinium chloride), negatively charged (sodium dodecyl sulfate), and non-charged (polyethylene glycol) surfactants are used as potential foulant in reverse electrodialysis systems supplying seawater and river freshwater. Fouling tendency of the foulants to ion-exchange membranes is investigated in terms of the adsorption by electromigration, electrostatic attraction, and macromolecule interaction in reverse electrodialysis systems. According to theoretical prediction of fouling tendency, charged foulants in seawater streams could foul ion-exchange membranes significantly. However, the worst fouling behavior is observed when the charged foulants are present in river streams. As a result of zeta potential measurement, it is found that the Debye length of the charged foulants decreases due to the higher ionic strength of seawater streams and causes to lower net electrostatic effect. It finally results in less fouling tendency in reverse electrodialysis.

Keywords: energy harvesting, excitation, experiment, planform, PVDF, vibration
In the present paper, we report a systematic investigation of planform geometry and excitation level effects on the dynamics and power generation characteristics of polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF)-based cantilevered vibration energy harvesters. Piezoelectric vibration energy harvesters provide a promising energy harvesting solution for widespread use of wireless sensors in remote locations. Highly flexible PVDF polymers offer resonant frequencies at suitable range for harvesting mechanical energy within low-frequency applications, though information on the efficient sizing of these devices is currently limited. We test the response of a set of eight harvesters to typical vibration sources excitation levels in the range 0.2−0.6 g. This set comprises four widths and two lengths, incrementing each time by a factor of two. The selected range of dimensions is sufficient to identify optimal power output versus width for both lengths tested. This optimal width value depends on excitation amp... [more]
The Energy of Finance in Refining of Medical Surge Capacity
Oleksandr Melnychenko
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: COVID-19, economic resources, Energy, financial resources, healthcare capacity, medical surge, pandemic, resources
The availability of resources and their concentration in the place of greatest need, will not allow us to successfully overcome a medical surge without the energy required to activate these resources and activities, and increase their quantities if necessary, that is why the staff and management of healthcare institutions are forced to making ethical crisis decisions about who wins and who loses. This study highlights the versatility of the concept of ‘energy’ by attributing it to money or financial resources, which are highly essential in dealing with surges as the healthcare system adopts the appropriate capacity level. This study considers the means (space, staff, supplies, and specific resources) at the disposal of healthcare institutions for the control of diseases as economic resources to identify ways for enhancing their capacity, especially during periods of medical surges such as that caused by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The medical resources are dependent on ‘energy’... [more]

Keywords: catalytic reactor, fluidized bed, heterogenous model, pseudohomogeneous model, steady state, transient behavior
Comparative analysis of the steady-state and transient properties of a bubbling fluidized-bed catalytic reactor obtained according to different mathematical models of the emulsion zone was performed to verify the commonly used assumption regarding the pseudohomogeneous nature of this zone. Four different mathematical models of the fluidized-bed reactor dynamics were formulated, based on different thermal and diffusional conditions at the gas-solid interface and within the catalyst pellet, namely the model based on the assumption of pseudohomogeneous character for the emulsion zone, and a group of two-scale models accounting for the heterogeneous character of this zone. It was demonstrated that, while the pseudohomogeneous model of the emulsion zone predicts almost identical behavior of the reactor at steady-state as the proposed heterogeneous models, it may fail in the prediction of the reactor start-up behavior, especially when dealing with highly exothermic processes run at relativel... Keywords: concentrated solar power system, FEM, numerical model, parabolic trough collector, solar energy, structural integrity
Nowadays the design of large-scale structures can be effectively improved by the adoption of numerical models. Even if experimental tests still play a fundamental role, a methodological approach that combines experimental testing and modelling technique can significantly improve the understanding of the matter. This, in fact, would result in a more reliable optimization process, drastically reducing efforts and uncertainties towards the implementation of the final product. The present work deals with the development of a finite element model for the analysis of a full-scale prototype of an innovative parabolic trough collector. The collector is analysed under several load conditions in order to evaluate its structural behaviour. Each load configuration is also numerically reproduced. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the model is capable of reproducing both the global (stiffness) and local (strain state) behaviour of the structure. Specifically, the comparison between experimental data... [more]
