Multi-Objective Optimization of a Hybrid Nanogrid/Microgrid: Application to Desert Camps in Hafr Al-Batin
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: desert camps, diesel generator, microgrid, multi-objective evolutionary algorithm, multi-objective optimization, nanogrid, solar energy
This paper presents an optimal design for a nanogrid/microgrid for desert camps in the city of Hafr Al-Batin in Saudi Arabia. The camps were designed to operate as separate nanogrids or to operate as an interconnected microgrid. The hybrid nanogrid/microgrid considered in this paper consists of a solar system, storage batteries, diesel generators, inverter, and load components. To offer the designer/operator various choices, the problem was formulated as a multi-objective optimization problem considering two objective functions, namely: the cost of electricity (COE) and the loss of power supply probability (LPSP). Furthermore, various component models were implemented, which offer a variety of equipment compilation possibilities. The formulated problem was then solved using the multi-objective evolutionary algorithm, based on both dominance and decomposition (MOEA/DD). Two cases were investigated corresponding to the two proposed modes of operation, i.e., nanogrid operation mode and mi... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: power system planning, power system simulation, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar PV, Stochastic Optimization, utility-scale energy storage
With recent technology advances and price drop, battery energy storage systems (BESSs) are considered as a promising storage technology in power systems. In this paper, a stochastic BESS planning model is introduced, which determines optimal capacity and durations of BESSs to co-locate utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in a high-voltage power system under the uncertainties of renewable resources and electric load. The optimization model minimizing total costs aims to obtain at least 20% electric energy from renewable sources, while satisfying all the physical constraints. Furthermore, two-stage stochastic programming is applied to formulate mathematical optimization problem to find out optimal durations and capacity of BESSs. In scheduling BESSs, chronology needs to be considered to represent temporal changes of BESS states; therefore, a scenario generation method to generate random sample paths with 1-h time step is adopted to explicitly represent uncertainty and temporal... Research and Solutions to Minimize Frontal Area Overheating of Hydro Generator Stator with Vertical Axis
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: condition monitoring and diagnostics, electric machines, power engineering computing, power generation control, power system analysis computing, stators, turbine
About ten hydroelectric power plants realized from 1970 to 1990 in Romania are confronted with stator overheating. The developed mathematical model analyzes the voltage stability based on modal analysis of the Jacobian matrix, identifying the hazardous modes of variation between voltage and flow rate, correlated with the characteristics of the analyzed generators and their response to these variations. Vulnerable elements in the system for inductive and capacitive modes of operation are identified. In these conditions, hydro generators cannot attend the secondary voltage control, not even for a frequency power dependency control. The elaborated mathematical model was tested at the hydroelectric power plants Gilceag, Mariselu, and Susag with similar functioning conditions. The necessary conditions for stator ventilation and variation of flow hydrodynamic parameters during the operation were established. The theoretical model was tested with an experimental method applied separately for... [more]

AC Magnetic Loss Reduction of SLM Processed Fe-Si for Additive Manufacturing of Electrical Machines
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: additive manufacturing, electric machines, iron losses, magnetic properties, selective laser melting, soft magnetic materials
Additively manufactured soft magnetic Fe-3.7%w.t.Si toroidal samples with solid and novel partitioned cross-sectional geometries are characterized through magnetic measurements. This study focuses on the effect of air gaps and annealing temperature on AC core losses at the 50 Hz frequency. In addition, DC electromagnetic material properties are presented, showing comparable results to conventional and other 3D-printed, high-grade, soft magnetic materials. The magnetization of 1.5 T was achieved at 1800 A/m, exhibiting a maximum relative permeability of 28,900 and hysteresis losses of 0.61 (1 T) and 1.7 (1.5 T) W/kg. A clear trend of total core loss reduction at 50 Hz was observed in relation to the segregation of the specimen cross-sectional topology. The lowest 50 Hz total core losses were measured for the toroidal specimen with four internal air gaps annealed at 1200 °C, exhibiting a total core loss of 1.2 (1 T) and 5.5 (1.5 T) W/kg. This is equal to an 860% total core loss reduction... [more]

A Virtual Power Plant Solution for Aggregating Photovoltaic Systems and Other Distributed Energy Resources for Northern European Primary Frequency Reserves
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: application programming interface, demand response, forecasting, frequency containment reserve, Machine Learning, neural network, primary frequency reserve, solar power, virtual power plant
Primary frequency reserves in Northern Europe have traditionally been provided with hydro plants and fossil fuel-burning spinning reserves. Recently, smart distributed energy resources have been equipped with functionality needed to participate on frequency reserves. Key categories of such resources include photovoltaic systems, batteries, and smart loads. Most of these resources are small and cannot provide the minimum controllable power required to participate on frequency reserves. Thus, virtual power plants have been used to aggregate the resources and trade them on the frequency reserves markets. The information technology aspects of virtual power plants are proprietary and many of the details have not been made public. The first contribution of this article is to propose a generic data model and application programming interface for a virtual power plant with the above-mentioned capabilities. The second contribution is to use the application programming interface to cope with the... [more]

Analysis of Financial Problems of Wind Farms in Poland
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Poland, wind energy, wind farm performance
Wind energy has been operating in Poland for over 20 years, but many opinions on its profitability are based on publications from other countries and simulations prepared by manufacturers. However, the truth is that the climatic specificity of various countries and price relationships, especially energy prices and subsidies, significantly differentiate this profitability depending on the country. The publication aimed to look at the profitability of wind farms in Poland from three perspectives: financial analysis, NPV (Net Present Value) calculation for older wind farms (2006−2014), and break-even price of energy for these farms (for a non-negative NPV). The research hypothesis set out in the publication stated that wind farms from this period require higher energy prices than current market prices in Poland to achieve a return on invested capital. An element of novelty was calculating the energy price range that would provide an opportunity for at least some of the older farms operati... [more]

Experimental Study of Transient Flow Regimes in a Model Hydroturbine Draft Tube
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: acoustic sensors, draft tube, laser-Doppler anemometer, phase (conditional) averaging, precessing vortex core, transient regime
Swirling flow with the formation of a precessing vortex core (PVC) in the draft tube model of a hydroturbine was studied. Experiments were performed on an aerodynamic setup under transient operating conditions of the hydroturbine. The turbine operating conditions were varied by continuously changing the flow rate at a constant runner speed. The transition from the partial load regime, when a precessing vortex core is formed, to the best efficiency point without a core is considered. Applied to this task, a comparison of the windowed Fourier transform with wavelet analysis is given. The dependence of the PVC lifetime in the transient regime correlates with the transient time. It is shown that the velocity profiles and the spectrum of pressure pulsations in transient regimes change quasistatically between part-load operation and the best efficiency point of the turbine. The phase-averaged velocity distributions in the transient regimes show that a transient regime is a sequence of quasis... [more]

High-Accuracy Power Quality Disturbance Classification Using the Adaptive ABC-PSO as Optimal Feature Selection Algorithm
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: artificial bee colony, optimal feature selection, Particle Swarm Optimization, power quality disturbance classification, probabilistic neural network
Power quality disturbance (PQD) is an important issue in electrical distribution systems that needs to be detected promptly and identified to prevent the degradation of system reliability. This work proposes a PQD classification using a novel algorithm, comprised of the artificial bee colony (ABC) and the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms, called “adaptive ABC-PSO” as the feature selection algorithm. The proposed adaptive technique is applied to a combination of ABC and PSO algorithms, and then used as the feature selection algorithm. A discrete wavelet transform is used as the feature extraction method, and a probabilistic neural network is used as the classifier. We found that the highest classification accuracy (99.31%) could be achieved through nine optimally selected features out of all 72 extracted features. Moreover, the proposed PQD classification system demonstrated high performance in a noisy environment, as well as the real distribution system. When comparing the... [more]

Research on the Transmission of Stresses by Roof Cutting near Gob Rocks
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: constant resistant and large deformation anchor cable, gob-side entry retaining by roof cutting, roadside support, stress transfer
Pressure relief for roadways retained by roof cutting is essentially caused by stress transfer. In this paper, the stress transfer mechanism of 16011 tail entry with roof cutting in Zhaogu No.1 coal mine is studied from the following two aspects: the change of the tail entry surrounding the rock structure and the interaction between the roadway surrounding rock and supporting structures. It is found by numerical simulation that roof cutting can significantly reduce the magnitude of roadway roof stress, transferring the concentrated stress induced by excavation and mining away from the roadway, and forming an obvious triangle pressure relief area in front of the working face. In the early stage after mining, most of the overburden load is transferred downward through the immediate roof of the roadway. With the movement of overlying strata, the stress, initially transferred to the immediate roof strata, is gradually transferred to the gob, and the calculation formula and influence factor... [more]

Improvement of Self-Predictive Incremental Conductance Algorithm with the Ability to Detect Dynamic Conditions
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: incremental conductance (InC), maximum power point (MPP), maximum power point tracking (MPPT), O), perturb and observe (P&, self-predictive incremental conductance (SPInC)
This paper presents a new version of the incremental conductance algorithm for more accurate tracking of the maximum power point (MPP). The modified algorithm is called self-predictive incremental conductance (SPInC), and it recognizes the operational region. It is capable of detecting dynamic conditions, and it detects sudden changes in power resulting from changes in the intensity of radiation or temperature. By selecting the appropriate step size, it obtains maximum power from the panel at any moment. The improved algorithm reduces output power ripple and increases the efficiency of the system by detecting the operating area and selecting the appropriate step size for each region. The SPInC algorithm divides the system’s work areas into three operating zones. It calculates the size of the appropriate step changes for each region after identifying the regions, which allows for more accurate tracking of the MPP and increases the system efficiency at a speed equal to the speed of the c... Numerical Study toward Optimization of Spray Drying in a Novel Radial Multizone Dryer
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Eulerian–Lagrangian, high-G acceleration, Process Intensification, Radial Multizone Dryer, spray drying, vortex chamber
In this paper, an intensified spray-drying process in a novel Radial Multizone Dryer (RMD) is analyzed by means of CFD. A three-dimensional Eulerian−Lagrangian multiphase model is applied to investigate the effect of solids outlet location, relative hot/cold airflow ratio, and droplet size on heat and mass transfer characteristics, G-acceleration, residence time, and separation efficiency of the product. The results indicate that the temperature pattern in the dryer is dependent on the solids outlet location. A stable, symmetric spray behavior with maximum evaporation in the hot zone is observed when the solids outlet is placed at the periphery of the vortex chamber. The maximum product separation efficiency (85 wt %) is obtained by applying high G-acceleration (at relative hot/cold ratio of 0.75) and narrow droplet size distribution (45−70 µm). The separation of different sized particles with distinct drying times is also observed. Smaller particles (<32 µm) leave the reactor via t... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: coaxial quadrotor, drag-like effects, UAV model, unmanned aerial vehicle
In this paper, an easily implementable coaxial quadrotor model and its validation on data from a real unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), are presented. The proposed mathematical model consists of two parts: description of orientation and position of the UAV in the three-dimensional space. It takes into consideration the gyroscopic effect, influence of the Coriolis force, viscous friction and a several drag-like effects (blade flapping, rotor drag, translational drag and profile drag). In contrast to multirotor models available in the literature, this one is characterized by complementarity in relation to the available control techniques. Depending on selection of these techniques, the model can be narrowed (simplified) to meet the needs without the loss of behaviour adequacy to a real UAV.

Identification of the Effects of Fire-Wave Propagation through the Power Unit’s Boiler Island
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: damage assessment, fires, power boilers, Tanks, the load-bearing structures
The article presents the results obtained during the inspection of the load-bearing structure of a power unit that suffered from fire. The inspection, consisting in the assessment of both the structure’s technical condition and durability of welded joints, was performed on seven height levels of the power unit. The vibration spectrum of the unit’s steel structure was analyzed, and frequency characteristics were, thus, obtained for individual measurement levels. Thermal vision measurements were also performed in the unit’s all connection points to check for possible unsealing of some elements in the boiler island of the inspected power unit. The next stage consisted of performing strength calculations of the steel structure with a goal to estimate the structure’s stress state. The conclusions contain suggestions for modernization of welded joints in order to maintain the power unit’s design strength.

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: choice, net zero, Nuclear, policy, reactor
The United Kingdom has declared a climate change policy of 100% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. Efforts thus far have been limited solely to electricity generation methods. While progress has been admirable, effort now must be directed at the nation’s non-electrical energy use. Nuclear energy is an essential part of any energy future, since it is low-carbon, firm and supplies synchronous electricity; however the nation’s nuclear strategy to date has been erratic, costly and lacking in strategic oversight. A multitude of reactor designs are on offer for potential uptake, and decision-makers must have clarity of vision on what these systems must deliver before forming a strategy. Choosing between these systems, given the uncharted energy future faced by the UK is a daunting prospect. Generic feasibility assessment offers a tool for decision-makers to assist them in selecting the most suitable nuclear system for chosen future conditions. Generic feasibility assessment offer... Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: ANN, AutoML, generator power, Industry 4.0, modeling techniques, operation control
Constructing the power curve of a power generation facility integrated with complex and large-scale industrial processes is a difficult task but can be accomplished using Industry 4.0 data analytics tools. This research attempts to construct the data-driven power curve of the generator installed at a 660 MW power plant by incorporating artificial intelligence (AI)-based modeling tools. Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: COHDA, communication, communication simulation, distributed optimization, multi-agent systems, Scheduling, smart grid, virtual power plants
With the transition towards renewable energy resources, the impact of small distributed generators (DGs) increases, leading to the need to actively stabilize distribution grids. DGs may be organized in virtual power plants (VPPs), where DGs’ schedules must be coordinated to enable the VPP to act as a single plant. One approach to solving this problem is using multi-agent systems (MAS) to offer autonomous, robust, and flexible control methods. The coordination of such systems requires communication between agents. The time required for this depends on communication characteristics, determined by the underlying communication infrastructure. In this paper, we investigate communication influences for the wireless technologies CDMA450 and LTE Advanced on the fully distributed optimization heuristic COHDA, which is used to perform optimized scheduling for a VPP. The use case under consideration is the adaptation of schedules to provide flexibility for regional congestion management for deliv... [more]

Coordinated Speed Control Strategy for Minimizing Energy Consumption of a Shearer in Fully Mechanized Mining
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: coal mining, drum rotational speed, energy consumption, optimal control, shearer, traction speed
As one of the major pieces of equipment in fully mechanized coal mining, the drum shearer plays a critical role in improving the efficiency and energy utilization in the coal mining production process. In this paper, an energy consumption model of a shearer, derived from the analysis of the cutting and traction resistances on the shearer during different processes within a working cycle, is established. Based on the derived model, control and coordination strategies between the two speeds are proposed to minimize the shearer’s energy consumption in unidirectional mining. The case study of a real coal mine shows that the proposed models are valid, and the optimal control of shearer speeds can effectively reduce the energy consumption by 5.16% in a working cycle. To gain further insights into the impact of traction speed and drum rotational speed on the shearer’s energy consumption, several speed coordination cases are employed to further compare with the optimized one. Hybrid and Ensemble Methods of Two Days Ahead Forecasts of Electric Energy Production in a Small Wind Turbine
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: deep neural network, electric energy production, ensemble methods, hybrid methods, Machine Learning, short-term forecasting, swarm intelligence, wind energy, wind turbine
The ability to forecast electricity generation for a small wind turbine is important both on a larger scale where there are many such turbines (because it creates problems for networks managed by distribution system operators) and for prosumers to allow current energy consumption planning. It is also important for owners of small energy systems in order to optimize the use of various energy sources and facilitate energy storage. The research presented here addresses an original, rarely predicted 48 h forecasting horizon for small wind turbines. This topic has been rather underrepresented in research, especially in comparison with forecasts for large wind farms. Wind speed forecasts with a 48 h horizon are also rarely used as input data. Subject: System Identification
Keywords: failure estimation, power distribution faults, underground network failures, waveform
The authors seek to investigate the characteristics of outage-causing faults that can be observed in a short time frame after their occurrence: waveform of the voltages and currents. The aim is to identify which characteristics can be used to estimate the failure type immediately after its occurrence. This paper lays the groundwork to determine which features display a stronger relation to four failure types with the aim of using this information in a later work, not presented in this paper, aimed at designing a reliable failure type estimator from readily available data. This paper focuses on the most common failures of the underground cable MV networks in Portugal: cable insulation; cable joint; secondary substation busbar; and excavation-motivated failures. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: green shallow reservoir, non-communicating layers, numerical simulation, recovery efficiency, waterflooding, well orientation
Recovery efficiency is a key factor in decision-making in oil and gas projects. Although structural setup and well type considerably influence waterflood recovery, few studies have explored the performance of highly deviated wells during the waterflooding of complex shallow reservoirs. Here, we applied numerical simulations to investigate the performance of vertical, horizontal, multilateral, and highly deviated wells during waterflooding of complex shallow reservoirs using the J1 Oilfield as a case study. Recovery efficiencies of 31%, 33%, 31%, and 26% could be achieved for vertical, horizontal, multilateral, and highly deviated wells, respectively. The gas production rate was 39% higher in the vertical wells than in the other types. Highly deviated wells yielded the highest water-cut (80%) over a short period.
