Keywords: liquid holdup modelling, Reactive Distillation, reactive tray design
An extension of the equilibrium stage model to improve its applicability to reactive distillation is presented. The significant aeration of the liquid holdup on trays leads to the amount of clear liquid present being significantly less than the volume available. Tray hydraulic correlations are incorporated by leveraging the existing inside-out algorithm to rigorously calculate the liquid holdup on distillation trays, turning this parameter into an additional model output and eliminating the need to estimate this parameter beforehand. Application of this extended model shows that the aeration of the liquid holdup cannot be neglected for systems where the reaction kinetics limit the reactive productivity, and leads to column designs where additional reactive trays are needed to provide adequate reactive capacity. The workflow of this model provides a more robust path to obtaining reactive distillation column and tray designs that comply with liquid holdup requirements and tray hydraulic... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: extraction-distillation, industrial furfural process, lignocellulosic biomass, Process Intensification, Reactive Distillation
Furfural is only derived from lignocellulosic biomass and is an important chemical used in the plastics, agrochemical, and pharmaceutical industries. The existing industrial furfural production process, involving reaction and purification steps, suffers from a low yield and intensive energy use. Hence, major improvements are needed to sustainably upgrade the furfural production process. In this study, the conventional furfural process based on a continuous stirred tank reactor and distillation columns was designed and optimized from an actual aqueous xylose solution via a biomass pretreatment step. Subsequently, a reactive distillation (RD) and extraction/distillation (ED) configuration was proposed for the reaction and purification steps, respectively, to improve the process efficiency. RD can remove furfural instantly from the reactive liquid phase and can separate heavy components from the raw furfural stream, while the ED configuration with toluene and butyl chloride used as extrac... Propylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate (PGMEA) is a commonly used solvent in the rapidly developing semiconductor industry. Ultra-high purity PGMEA is required for this ultra-precision industry and to satisfy the current strict waste management regulations. The traditional PGMEA production process consumes considerable energy and has a high production cost. In this study, a novel heat integrated and intensified design, which applies a dividing wall column, reactive distillation, and pressure swing techniques, was proposed for improving the energy efficiency and reducing the cost of PGMEA production. Heat integration was applied to maximize the heat recovery of the process. All processes were simulated using the commercial simulator Aspen Plus V11. The economic and environmental parameters of the process alternative were assessed for a fair comparison with the conventional process. The results showed that heat integration of the optimal pressure swing-based reactive distillation and... [more]

Keywords: energy–economic–safety aspects, ethyl acetate, heat pump, process integration and intensification, Reactive Distillation
Multi-objective (energy−economic−safety) assessment of ethyl acetate production involving a heat pump is presented in this paper. The heat pump is designed to intensify ethyl acetate separation and to reduce the total operating cost. Two ethyl acetate production pathways are upgraded using a heat pump, conventional process and reactive distillation column with a separation unit. Detailed process models including the heat pump environment have been compiled and optimized in the Aspen Plus software. Both benefits and drawbacks of including the heat pump in the processes are evaluated using three different points of view: process energy, economics, and safety. As a result, using a heat pump is highly recommended in both conventional process and reactive distillation column with a separation unit. As a higher level of process integration is achieved using a heat pump, economic aspects are improved; however, safety aspects deteriorate. The final decision on the suitability of using a heat p... Keywords: biodiesel, heat integration, Optimization, process control, Reactive Distillation
Biodiesel is a promising renewable energy option that significantly reduces the emission of greenhouse gases and other toxic byproducts. However, a major challenge in the industrial scale production of biodiesel is the desired product purity. To this end, reactive distillation (RD) processes, which involve simultaneous removal of the byproduct during the transesterification reaction, can drive the equilibrium towards high product yield. In the present study, we first optimized the heat exchange network (HEN) for a high purity RD process leading to a 34% reduction in the overall energy consumption. Further, a robust control scheme is proposed to mitigate any feed disturbance in the process that may compromise the product purity. Three rigorous case studies are performed to investigate the effect of composition control in the cascade with the temperature control of the product composition. The cascade control scheme effectively countered the disturbances and maintained the fatty acid mon... [more]

In this article, the Dimethyl Carbonate (DMC) synthesis process was investigated thermodynamically based on a well-optimized DMC system for a developed configuration, according to a real industrial plant, presented by Huang et al. Exergy analysis was performed using ProSimPlus software as an efficient process modeling and simulation environment that is uniquely capable of exergy balance computations. The key operational variables such as the reflux ratio (Rr), feed temperatures, and feed tray location were varied to explore their impact on the total irreversibilities, global intrinsic efficiency, and DMC purity. The influence of the high pressure (HP) column reflux ratio was the most effective parameter on the exergy destruction and DMC purity, which also significantly increased the duties of the HP column reboiler and condenser. The steady state results are reported in comparison with those found in the literature, and an excellent match is shown between them.

In view of the problem that 1,1,2,2,3,3,4−heptafluorocyclopentane (F7A) is difficult to separate and recover when mixed with tert−amyl alcohol (TAA) for further application, leading to high cost, we designed a reactive distillation process, and conducted experimental research on the recycle effect of F7A, aiming to recycle F7A with high purity and yield from the used compound cleaning agents, thereby greatly reducing the cost. With zinc chloride as the catalyst, the dehydration reaction of TAA was carried out and the reaction kinetics were measured. Besides, the reaction kinetic equation was obtained by the correlation of experimental data. Investigations were also conducted on the effects of catalyst amount, reaction temperature, and reflux ratio on the conversion of TAA and the recovery of F7A. Based on the reaction kinetics and process optimization, the reactive distillation process for recovery of F7A was simulated to analyze the effects of stage number, feed stage, reflux ratio, a... Butyl acetate (BuAc) is widely used as a solvent in many applications, mainly in the food and pharmaceutical industries. The conventional process for BuAc production is both capital and energy intensive. The purification process involves the separation of BuAc from the azeotropic mixture of water and n-butanol, which is difficult to accomplish using a simple distillation unit. In this study, a membrane reactor (MR) for BuAc production via the esterification of n-butanol was investigated. The MR using the Amberlyst-15 catalyst was modeled and validated with previously reported experimental data, and a good agreement was achieved. The ultimate conversion of n-butanol using the MR was 92.0%, compared to 69.8% for the conventional reactor. This study is the first to propose an intensified MR-based process for butyl acetate production. The MR-based process was developed and rigorously simulated using Aspen Plus for an annual plant capacity of 92,500 metric tons of BuAc. The MR-based process... [more]

This paper provides a multi-aspect comparison of selected methods of ethyl acetate production and shows the possibility of further reactive distillation process integration and sophisticated intensification including process stream regeneration. The production pathways were selected with respect to their practical applicability and sufficient experimental and feasibility studies already published. A total of four case studies were designed and compared: conventional process set-up (ethyl acetate is produced in a chemical reactor) is designed as a base case study; reactive distillation with a separation unit is derived from the conventional process set-up. The mechanical and chemical approach to reactive distillation process intensification and integration were assumed: reactive distillation column with a stripper and reactive distillation column with an auxiliary chemical reaction (ethylene oxide hydration). Process models were compiled in the Aspen Plus software. Complex process flows... [more]

Keywords: Inside–Out method, numerical simulation, Reactive Distillation, steady state simulation
Reactive distillation is a technical procedure that promotes material strengthening and its simulation plays an important role in the design, research, and optimization of reactive distillation. The solution to the equilibrium mathematical model of the reactive distillation process involves the calculation of a set of nonlinear equations. In view of the mutual influence between reaction and distillation, the nonlinear enhancement of the mathematical model and the iterative calculation process are prone to fluctuations. In this study, an improved Inside−Out method was proposed to solve the reaction distillation process. The improved Inside−Out methods mainly involved—(1) the derivation of a new calculation method for the K value of the approximate thermodynamic model from the molar fraction summation equation and simplifying the calculation process of the K value, as a result; and (2) proposal for an initial value estimation method suitable for the reactive distillation process. The alg... [more]

An intensified three-step reaction-separation process for the production of bio-jet diesel from tryglycerides and petro-diesel mixtures is proposed. The intensified reaction-separation process considers three sequentially connected sections: (1) a triglyceride hydrolysis section with a catalytic heterogeneous reactor, which is used to convert the triglycerides of the vegetable oils into the resultant fatty acids. The separation of the pure fatty acid from glycerol and water is performed by a three-phase flash drum and two conventional distillation columns; (2) a co-hydrotreating section with a reactive distillation column used to perform simultaneously the deep hydrodesulphurisation (HDS) of petro-diesel and the hydrodeoxigenation (HDO), decarbonylation and decarboxylation of the fatty acids; and (3) an isomerization-cracking section with a hydrogenation catalytic reactor coupled with a two-phase flash drum is used to produce bio-jet diesel with the suitable fuel features required by t...
