A Study on Wear and Friction of Passenger Vehicles Control Arm Ball Joints
Marek Wozniak, Krzysztof Siczek, Gustavo Ozuna, Przemyslaw Kubiak
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ball joint, finite element method, roughness, STM microscope, suspension, vehicle
The following paper describes research on vehicle suspension elements: the ball joints. The worn surface roughness of selected ball pins and their bearings was compared in terms of vehicle mileage, utilization period, and car model. Ball pin roughness was measured using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM), whereas for the bearing surface, a profilometer was used. The aim of this study was to determine the resistive torque in an unloaded ball joint. Using the finite element method, models of the unloaded ball joint were analyzed in two scenarios: with and without interference between the worn ball and its bearing. Calculated values of resistive torques in the ball joint were compared, and recommendations were given relative to the mileage and the time after which it was necessary to perform verification or replacement of the ball joints.

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: binder-free, composite electrodes, CuCo2O4@NiCo2O4, metallic oxides, supercapacitors
Metallic oxides are considered promising candidates for supercapacitors owing to their inherent pseudocapacitive behavior and superior electrochemical properties. In this work, NiCo2O4, CuCo2O4, and CuCo2O4@NiCo2O4 composite electrodes are synthesized directly on a nickel foam substrate via the facile hydrothermal method. The phase of the prepared materials was analyzed using the X-ray diffraction method. The morphology of the prepared binder-free electrodes was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The electrochemical testing was done in a 2 M KOH solution against an Ag/AgCl reference electrode. The CuCo2O4@NiCo2O4 composite electrode demonstrated a value of specific capacitance as high as 422 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1 and thus outperformed the NiCo2O4 and CuCo2O4 in terms of its electrochemical performance. The CuCo2O4@NiCo2O4 composite retained a specific capacitance of 278 F g−1 even with the increase of current density to 10 A g−1, which corresponds to a 34% loss o... [more]
A CUSUM-Based Approach for Condition Monitoring and Fault Diagnosis of Wind Turbines
Phong B. Dao
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: condition monitoring, CUSUM test, Fault Detection, multiple linear regression, SCADA data, structural change, wind turbine
This paper presents a cumulative sum (CUSUM)-based approach for condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of wind turbines (WTs) using SCADA data. The main ideas are to first form a multiple linear regression model using data collected in normal operation state, then monitor the stability of regression coefficients of the model on new observations, and detect a structural change in the form of coefficient instability using CUSUM tests. The method is applied for on-line condition monitoring of a WT using temperature-related SCADA data. A sequence of CUSUM test statistics is used as a damage-sensitive feature in a control chart scheme. If the sequence crosses either upper or lower critical line after some recursive regression iterations, then it indicates the occurrence of a fault in the WT. The method is validated using two case studies with known faults. The results show that the method can effectively monitor the WT and reliably detect abnormal problems.

Keywords: artificial neural network (ANN), DC-link, fuel cell (FC), fuzzy logic controller (FLC), MPPT, particle swarm optimization (PSO), solar photovoltaic (PV)
Direct current microgrids are attaining attractiveness due to their simpler configuration and high-energy efficiency. Power transmission losses are also reduced since distributed energy resources (DERs) are located near the load. DERs such as solar panels and fuel cells produce the DC supply; hence, the system is more stable and reliable. DC microgrid has a higher power efficiency than AC microgrid. Energy storage systems that are easier to integrate may provide additional benefits. In this paper, the DC micro-grid consists of solar photovoltaic and fuel cell for power generation, proposes a hybrid energy storage system that includes a supercapacitor and lithium−ion battery for the better improvement of power capability in the energy storage system. The main objective of this research work has been done for the enhanced settling point and voltage stability with the help of different maximum power point tracking (MPPT) methods. Different control techniques such as fuzzy logic controller... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: differentiated governance, multi-scale geographically weighted regression, PM2.5, spatial heterogeneity
Deteriorating air quality is one of the most important environmental factors posing significant health risks to urban dwellers. Therefore, an exploration of the factors influencing air pollution and the formulation of targeted policies to address this issue are critically needed. Although many studies have used semi-parametric geographically weighted regression and geographically weighted regression to study the spatial heterogeneity characteristics of influencing factors of PM2.5 concentration change, due to the fixed bandwidth of these methods and other reasons, those studies still lack the ability to describe and explain cross-scale dynamics. The multi-scale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) method allows different variables to have different bandwidths, which can produce more realistic and useful spatial process models. By applying the MGWR method, this study investigated the spatial heterogeneity and spatial scales of impact of factors influencing PM2.5 concentrations in m... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: COVID-19, energy consumption, energy poverty, student
The aim of this paper is to define the factors influencing the level of energy poverty among students. The analysis of these factors is based on the results of a survey conducted among a group of 937 students at the Cracow University of Economics. The study takes into consideration the changes in the attitudes and behavior of students resulting from the introduction of distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The switch to distance learning resulted in a significant increase in the number of responses related to feeling ill or sick due to inadequate temperature (from 24% before a lockdown to 32% after the introduction of a lockdown). Students experienced temporary surges in their overall living costs due to the pandemic, especially during the first wave. The respondents who experienced inappropriate temperatures (inadequate heating) due to excessive costs felt ill or became sick more often than others. The study demonstrated that those who pay more for energy (defined as a surpl... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hybrid system, photovoltaic generator, sizing methodology, water pumping, wind generator
The Green Deal and increased nutritional needs are driving factors in human activities nowadays. Agriculture is an essential economic sector that can profit from the application of renewable energy sources by the assimilation of off-grid, arid and barren terrains. Power supplied by hybrid systems for water pumping is a solution for overcoming the stochastic character of the renewable energy sources. This paper presents a sizing methodology for a hybrid system with wind and PV generation and water tank storage, based on the consideration of the entire energy conversion chain with energy models and a one-year operation simulation. The PV generator is modeled using a reduced Durisch’s model, while for the wind generator a piecewise interpolation is used. The methodology is applied for sites in Bulgaria with specific agricultural crops and meteorological data. Combinations of PV (different technologies) and wind (different types) generators and water tank capacities are considered and disc... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: balance responsibility, demand response, end-user interface, energy community, local energy market, peer-to-peer electricity trading
Peer-to-peer (P2P) electricity sharing or trading can empower consumers and prosumers, incentivize the balancing of generation and demand locally, increase system resilience and reliability, and help in achieving societal goals, such as increasing renewable energy penetration. Nevertheless, the development of P2P trading in actual environments has been slow due to the unclear position of P2P markets in the power system. Recent developments in the European legislation are promising for the establishment of P2P markets and energy communities. Hence, the interplay between local trading and existing market structures needs to be addressed carefully. Furthermore, P2P trading with distributed resources presumes that electricity end users will become active players in the power system. This paper proposes a bidding and pricing mechanism for local markets, considering the external markets; a new approach to balance settlement and balance responsibility when local trading occurs; and an interfa... Mehran Tahir, Stefan Tenbohlen
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: artificial neural network (ANN), condition assessment, feature generation, frequency response analysis (FRA), numerical indices, power transformer
Frequency response analysis (FRA) is a well-known method to assess the mechanical integrity of the active parts of the power transformer. The measurement procedures of FRA are standardized as described in the IEEE and IEC standards. However, the interpretation of FRA results is far from reaching an accepted and definitive methodology as there is no reliable code available in the standard. As a contribution to this necessity, this paper presents an intelligent fault detection and classification algorithm using FRA results. The algorithm is based on a multilayer, feedforward, backpropagation artificial neural network (ANN). First, the adaptive frequency division algorithm is developed and various numerical indicators are used to quantify the differences between FRA traces and obtain feature sets for ANN. Finally, the classification model of ANN is developed to detect and classify different transformer conditions, i.e., healthy windings, healthy windings with saturated core, mechanical de... [more]

Jakub Jasiński, Mariusz Kozakiewicz, Maciej Sołtysik
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: capacity market, energy cooperatives, Energy Storage, mixed integer programming, rural areas
The European Green Deal aims to make Europe the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050 by shifting to a clean circular economy, combating biodiversity loss and reducing pollution levels. In Poland, whose economy invariably remains one of the most dependent on coal consumption in Europe, institutional responses to the above EU objectives have taken the shape of energy cooperatives aimed at filling the gaps in the development of the civic dimension of energy on a local scale and the use of potential renewable energy sources in rural areas, including in relation to the agricultural sector. This article is a continuation of the authors’ previous research work, which has so far focused on the analysis of the development of profitability of Polish institutions that fit into the European idea of a “local energy community”, which includes energy cooperatives. In this research paper, they present the results of subsequent research work and analyses performed on the basis of it which, o... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed generation, distribution network, grid outage/interruption, outage prediction, PV-battery, reliability modeling, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Weibull/Markov model
Intermittent power interruptions and blackouts with long outage durations are very common, especially on weak distribution grids such as in developing countries. This paper proposes a hybrid photovoltaic (PV)-battery-system sizing optimization through a genetic algorithm to address the reliability in fragile grids measured by the loss of power supply probability (LPSP) index. Recorded historical outage data from a real stochastic grid in Ethiopia and measured customer load is used. The resulting hybrid-system Pareto solutions give the flexibility for customers/power utilities to choose appropriate sizes based on the required reliability level. To evaluate the sizing solutions’ robustness, this work considers and compares grid outage modeling through two different approaches. The first is a Markov model, developed to be minimally implemented with limited outage data available. The second is a Weibull model, commonly used to describe extreme phenomena and failure analysis. It is more fai... [more]
Short-Term Load Forecasting Using Neural Networks with Pattern Similarity-Based Error Weights
Grzegorz Dudek
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: multiple seasonality, neural networks, pattern representation of time series, short-term load forecasting, time-series forecasting
Forecasting time series with multiple seasonal cycles such as short-term load forecasting is a challenging problem due to the complicated relationship between input and output data. In this work, we use a pattern representation of the time series to simplify this relationship. A neural network trained on patterns is an easier task to solve. Thus, its architecture does not have to be either complex and deep or equipped with mechanisms to deal with various time-series components. To improve the learning performance, we propose weighting individual errors of training samples in the loss function. The error weights correspond to the similarity between the training pattern and the test query pattern. This approach makes the learning process more sensitive to the neighborhood of the test pattern. This means that more distant patterns have less impact on the learned function around the test pattern and lead to improved forecasting accuracy. The proposed framework is useful for a wide range of... [more]

Keywords: load-commutated inverter, synchronous motor, torsional vibrations
This paper proposes time-domain analytical expressions of the instantaneous pulsating torque components in a synchronous machine air gap when supplied by a load-commutated-inverter (LCI) system. The LCI technology is one of the most used variable frequency drives when very high power and low speed are required in applications such as pipeline recompression and decompression, as well as liquefied natural gas compression. In such applications, synchronous motors are used because of their high efficiency resulting from a separated supply of the current to their rotor through the excitation circuit. These applications usually have long and flexible shafts, which are very sensitive to torsional vibration excitation when their natural frequencies interact with any external torque applied to the shaft. A torsional analysis is required by international standards to assess the survivability of the shaft through the overall speed range of the motor. Therefore, the magnitude and frequencies of th... April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive control system, offshore wind energy, reactive power booster voltage, voltage stability, VSC-HVDC
Increasing offshore wind farms are rapidly installed and planned. However, this will pose a bottle neck challenge for long-distance transmission as well as inherent variation of their generating power outputs to the existing AC grid. VSC-HVDC links could be an effective and flexible method for this issue. With the growing use of voltage source converter high-voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) technology, the hybrid VSC-HVDC and AC system will be a next-generation transmission network. This paper analyzes the contribution of the multi VSC-HVDC system on the AC voltage stability of the hybrid system. A key contribution of this research is proposing a novel adaptive control approach of the VSC-HVDC as a so-called dynamic reactive power booster to enhance the voltage stability of the AC system. The core idea is that the novel control system is automatically providing a reactive current based on dynamic frequency of the AC system to maximal AC voltage support. Based on the analysis, an adapt... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: fleet sizing, freight transportation, heterogeneous heavy-vehicle fleet, hybrid and electric vehicles, logistics and electromobility, propulsion tailoring
Commercial-vehicle manufacturers design vehicles to operate over a wide range of transportation tasks and driving cycles. However, certain possibilities of reducing emissions, manufacturing and operational costs from end vehicles are neglected if the target range of transportation tasks is narrow and known in advance, especially in case of electrified propulsion. Apart from real-time energy optimization, vehicle hardware can be meticulously tailored to best fit a known transportation task. As proposed in this study, a heterogeneous fleet of heavy-vehicles can be designed in a more cost- and energy-efficient manner, if the coupling between vehicle hardware, transportation mission, and infrastructure is considered during initial conceptual-design stages. To this end, a rather large optimization problem was defined and solved to minimize the total cost of fleet ownership in an integrated manner for a real-world case study. In the said case-study, design variables of optimization problem i... [more]
Recoupling Climate Change and Air Quality: Exploring Low-Emission Options in Urban Transportation Using the TIMES-City Model
Jonas Forsberg, Anna Krook-Riekkola
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: air pollution policy, ancillary benefits, climate policy, energy-system optimisation model, urban energy system
Fossil fuels in transportation are a significant source of local emissions in and around cities; thus, decarbonising transportation can reduce both greenhouse gases (GHGs) and air pollutants (APs). However, the degree of these reductions depends on what replaces fossil fuels. Today, GHG and AP mitigation strategies are typically ‘decoupled’ as they have different motivations and responsibilities. This study investigates the ancillary benefits on (a) APs if the transport sector is decarbonised, and (b) GHGs if APs are drastically cut and (c) the possible co-benefits from targeting APs and GHGs in parallel, using an energy-system optimisation model with a detailed and consistent representation of technology and fuel choices. While biofuels are the most cost-efficient option for meeting ambitious climate-change-mitigation targets, they have a very limited effect on reducing APs. Single-handed deep cuts in APs require a shift to zero-emission battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicle... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AC/DC hybrid distribution network, optimal scheduling strategy, power electronic transformer
The AC/DC hybrid distribution network is composed of a medium-voltage DC bus, a low-voltage DC bus, and a power electronic transformer, and has the characteristics of multi-voltage level, multi-DC bus, and multi-converter, so its operation mode and optimal scheduling strategy are more complex. Firstly, this paper constructs the AC/DC hybrid distribution network using an power electronic transformer. Then, a two-layer control structure including a scheduling management layer and a bus control layer is proposed, which simplifies the control structure and gives full play to the role of “energy routing” function of the power electronic transformer. Moreover, the minimum operation cost of the AC/DC hybrid distribution network in the whole scheduling cycle is taken as the optimization objective, considering the characteristics of various distributed generations, the structure of AC/DC hybrid distribution network, and the interaction of “source−load−storage”. Finally, the optimal scheduling m... [more]

Keywords: district heating retrofit, dynamic district heating modelling, heating sector decarbonisation, levelized cost of heat, low temperature district heating system, power to heat
There are 1454 district heating systems in Germany. Most of them are fossil based and with high temperature levels, which is neither efficient nor sustainable and needs to be changed for reaching the 2050 climate goals. In this paper, we present a case study for transforming a high to low temperature district heating system which is more suitable for renewable energy supply. With the Carnot Toolbox, a dynamic model of a potential district heating system is simulated and then transformed to a low temperature supply. A sensitivity analysis is carried out to see the system performance in case space constrains restrict the transformation. Finally, an economic comparison is performed. Results show that it is technically possible to perform the transformation until a very low temperature system. The use of decentralized renewable sources, decentralized heat storage tanks and the placement of a heat pump on each building are the key points to achieve the transformation. Regarding the sensitiv... [more]

Keywords: Biofuels, Butanol, Diesel, emissions, engine, GHG, performance, properties
Nowadays, the transport sector is trying to face climate change and to contribute to a sustainable world by introducing modern after-treatment systems or by using biofuels. In sectors such as road freight transportation, agricultural or cogeneration in which the electrification is not considered feasible with the current infrastructure, renewable options for diesel engines such as alcohols produced from waste or lignocellulosic materials with advanced production techniques show a significant potential to reduce the life-cycle greenhouse emissions with respect to diesel fuel. This study concludes that lignocellulosic biobutanol can achieve 60% lower greenhouse gas emissions than diesel fuel. Butanol-diesel blends, with up to 40% butanol content, could be successfully used in a diesel engine calibrated for 100% diesel fuel without any additional engine modification nor electronic control unit recalibration at a warm ambient temperature.
