Electrical and Mechanical Characteristics of a High-Speed Motor for Electric Turbochargers in Relation to Eccentricity
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: eccentricity, electric turbocharger, high-speed motor, one-way coupled analysis
As the demand for eco-friendly, high-efficiency transportation technologies increase due to climate change, a high-speed electric motor, a key component of an electric turbocharger, has been developed that can reduce emissions and increase fuel efficiency. Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute with Keyyang Precision Co., Ltd., developed a high-speed surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor. It operates at a power of 3 kW at 100,000 rpm and is intended to fit 1600 cc diesel vehicles. In this paper, the electrical and mechanical characteristics of the high-speed motor were reviewed in consideration of the effect of eccentricity among the various causes that affect vibration. It was confirmed that eccentricity affected the distribution of the electromagnetic force and inductance of the winding due to the uneven air-gap. Additional vibration was generated at the half of pole passing frequency (1666.67 Hz). Diagnosing the presence or absence of eccentricity when driving a mot... [more]

Rural Electrification Pathways: An Implementation of LEAP and GIS Tools in Mali
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: affordability, decentralized solar PV, GIS for rural electrification, rural electrification, tiered electrification
Remote rural populations do not often have the luxury of viable multisource electricity generation systems. Considering fossil fuels for remote populated areas is not often a viable option due to the fuel transportation costs and the population’s socioeconomic status. Extending the grid is often economically prohibitive. This paper proposes possible ways in which Mali could increase the rate of population with access to electricity by 2050 using Low Emission Analysis Platform (LEAP) and geographical information tools. The current energy situation is assessed, and multiple demand and supply scenarios are created to find the most viable option in environmental and economic dimensions. A minimum of 50% reduction of biomass consumption in the residential sector and a maximum of 71% was achieved through the combination of grid extension and decentralized solar PV. Solar PV becomes the preferable option when enough time for the effects of electricity on income is given. When these effects ar... [more]

A Sequential Optimization-Simulation Approach for Planning the Transition to the Low Carbon Freight System with Case Study in the North Island of New Zealand
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: discrete event simulation, energy transition, freight transport, Greenhouse Gas Emissions, multimodal freight transport planning, sequential optimization-simulation, transition engineering
Freight movement has always been, and always will be an essential activity. Freight transport is one of the most challenging sectors to transition to net-zero carbon. Traffic assignment, mode allocation, network planning, hub location, train scheduling and terminal design problem-solving have previously been used to address cost and operation efficiencies. In this study, the interdisciplinary transition innovation, management and engineering (InTIME) methodology was used for the conceptualization, redesign and redevelopment of the existing freight systems to achieve a downshift in fossil energy consumption. The fourth step of the InTIME methodology is the conceptualization of a long-term future intermodal transport system that can serve the current freight task. The novelty of our approach stands in considering the full range of freight supply chain factors as a whole, using an optimization-simulation approach as if we were designing the low-carbon system of 2121. Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: adjoint model, curse of dimensionality, first-order adjoint sensitivity analysis methodology, forward model, fourth-order adjoint sensitivity analysis methodology, Rayleigh quotient, Roussopoulos functional, Schwinger functional, second-order adjoint sensitivity analysis methodology, third-order adjoint sensitivity analysis methodology
The most general quantities of interest (called “responses”) produced by the computational model of a linear physical system can depend on both the forward and adjoint state functions that describe the respective system. This work presents the Fourth-Order Comprehensive Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology (4th-CASAM) for linear systems, which enables the efficient computation of the exact expressions of the 1st-, 2nd-, 3rd- and 4th-order sensitivities of a generic system response, which can depend on both the forward and adjoint state functions, with respect to all of the parameters underlying the respective forward/adjoint systems. Among the best known such system responses are various Lagrangians, including the Schwinger and Roussopoulos functionals, for analyzing ratios of reaction rates, the Rayleigh quotient for analyzing eigenvalues and/or separation constants, etc., which require the simultaneous consideration of both the forward and adjoint systems when computing them and/... Deep Convolutional Feature-Based Probabilistic SVDD Method for Monitoring Incipient Faults of Batch Process
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Batch Process, deep learning, incipient fault, support vector data description
Support vector data description (SVDD) has been widely applied to batch process fault detection. However, it often performs poorly, especially when incipient faults occur, because it only considers the shallow data feature and omits the probabilistic information of features. In order to provide better monitoring performance on incipient faults in batch processes, an improved SVDD method, called deep probabilistic SVDD (DPSVDD), is proposed in this work by integrating the convolutional autoencoder and the probability-related monitoring indices. For mining the hidden data features effectively, a deep convolutional features extraction network is designed by a convolutional autoencoder, where the encoder outputs and the reconstruction errors are used as the monitor features. Furthermore, the probability distribution changes of these features are evaluated by the Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence so that the probability-related monitoring indices are developed for indicating the process stat... Thermal and Flow Simulation of Concentric Annular Heat Pipe with Symmetric or Asymmetric Condenser
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: concentric annular heat pipe, cooling, electronics, heat sink
The current research work describes the flow and thermal analysis inside the circular flow region of an annular heat pipe with a working fluid, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. A two-phase flow involving simultaneous evaporation and condensation phenomena in a concentric annular heat pipe (CAHP) is modeled. To simulate the interaction between these phases, the volume of fluid (VOF) technique is used. The temperature profile predicted using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in the CAHP was compared with previously obtained experimental results. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional simulations were carried out, in order to verify the usefulness of 3D modeling. Our goal was to compute the flow characteristics, temperature distribution, and velocity field inside the CAHP. Depending on the shape of the annular heat pipe, the thermal performance can be improved through the optimal design of components, such as the inner width of the annular heat pipe, the location of th... Design and Large Temperature Jump Testing of a Modular Finned-Tube Carbon−Ammonia Adsorption Generator for Gas-Fired Heat Pumps
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: active carbon, Adsorption, ammonia, heat pump
Gas-fired heat pumps are a potential replacement for condensing boilers, utilizing fossil-fuel resources more efficiently and reducing the amount of biogas or hydrogen required in sustainable gas grids. However, their adoption has been limited due to their large size and high capital cost, resulting in long payback times. For adsorption-based heat pumps, the major development challenge is to maximize the rate of heat transfer to the adsorbent, whilst minimizing the thermal mass. This work develops a modular finned-tube carbon−ammonia adsorption generator that incorporates the adsorbent in highly compacted 3-mm layers between aluminum fins. Manufacturing techniques that are amenable to low cost and high-volume production were developed. The module was tested using the large temperature jump (LTJ) method and achieved a time constant for adsorption and desorption of 50 s. The computational model predicted that if incorporated into two adsorption generators of 6 L volume each, they could b... [more]

Energy Saving Approach for an Electric Pump Using a Fuzzy Controller
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive Tabu search, energy saving, fuzzy control, single-phase induction motor
This paper presents an energy-saving approach for electric pumps widely used in agriculture. A capacitor-run single-phase induction motor is used with a centrifugal pump. An appropriate energy-saving frequency and voltage calculation algorithm is proposed in this paper. The fuzzy controller is used to control the water flow rate of the electric pump. Moreover, the adaptive Tabu search algorithm is used to identify induction motor parameters. The experimental results from the energy-saving approach are compared with the valve control and V/f control in terms of input power and power factor. From the experimental results, the electric pump using the proposed energy-saving approach consumes minimum input power compared with other approaches. In addition, the energy-saving approach can provide a good power factor at any flow rate.

Preliminarily Screening Geographical Hotspots for New Rooftop PV Installation: A Case Study in Thailand
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: compensation mechanisms, hotspot, photovoltaics, PV forecasts, rooftop solar, utility’s impact
As rooftop PV deployment accelerates around the world, forecasts of rooftop PV penetration by geographical region and customer group are essential to guide policy and decision-making by utilities. However, most state-of-the-art forecasting tools require detailed data that are often unavailable for developing countries. A simplified analytical tool with limited data is proposed to preliminarily identify the rooftop PV “hotspots”—that is, geographical areas where many new investments into rooftop PV investments are likely to occur. The tool combines the assessment of financial and technical indicator in form of the optimal PV-to-load ratio indicating the maximum penetration of solar PV, and the capital-to-expenditure ratio indicating the ease of such investment. Using Thailand as a case study, the results from this tool show that under the self-consumption and net-billing scheme, the Northern and Northeastern regions are marked as the potential hotspots where the utility’s impact will be... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: damp heat, ethylene vinyl acetate, polyolefin elastomer, temperature cycle
Standard damp heat (DH), temperature cycle (TC), and combined DH-TC tests were performed using monocrystalline Si 72-cell modules with a conventional ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) encapsulant, and their module performance and electroluminescence images were investigated. During the DH test, a significant drop (~20%) in the maximum output power of the module was noticed, primarily because of the degradation of fill factor and an increase in series resistance at 5500 h of DH testing (DH5500), presumably due to the corrosion of metal electrodes by moisture ingress. Conversely, it was revealed that temperature cycling did not seriously degrade module performance until 1400 cycles. However, the combined DH5000-TC600 test suggested in this study, with a sequence of DH1000-TC200-DH1000-TC200-DH1000-TC200-DH2000, was confirmed to provide harsher conditions than the DH-only test by causing a 20% decrease in maximum output power (Pmax) after DH3000/TC400. Subject: Other
Keywords: bearing currents, bearings, electrical machine, shaft voltages
The article presents a new method of counteracting shaft voltages and currents in AC electrical machines. It is based on the use of an auxiliary winding located in the stator of the machine. The design of a test stand adapted to the measurement of shaft voltages of the machine, based on the prototype of a synchronous machine with permanent magnets, has been presented. The model was used to conduct a number of laboratory tests aimed at confirming the functionality of the auxiliary winding in various operating states of the machine (including no-load and load condition during generator operation). The article focuses on demonstrating the beneficial effect of the auxiliary winding on the level of induced shaft voltages in an electric machine. In order to confirm the close dependence of the circular flux in the stator yoke on the shaft voltage, shaft voltage measurement results for various cases of external power supply of auxiliary winding forcing a circular flux are presented. Two-Phase Heuristic Algorithm for Integrated Airline Fleet Assignment and Routing Problem
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: aircraft rotation, airline fleet assignment, computational analysis, heuristic algorithm
High profitability and high costs have stiffened competition in the airline industry. The main purpose of the study is to propose a computationally efficient algorithm for integrated fleet assignments and aircraft routing problems for a real-case hub and spoke airline planning problem. The economic concerns of airline operations have led to the need for minimising costs and increasing the ability to meet rising demands. Since fleets are the most limited and valuable assets of airline carriers, the allocation of aircraft to scheduled flights directly affects profitability/market share. The airline fleet assignment problem (AFAP) addresses the assignment of aircraft, each with a different capacity, capability, availability, and requirement, to a given flight schedule. This study proposes a mathematical model and heuristic method for solving a real-life airline fleet assignment and aircraft routing problem. Economic Evaluation of Wind Power Projects in a Mix of Free and Regulated Market Environments in Brazil
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: brazilian electrical system, project evaluation, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, wind energy
The electricity market in Brazil is basically organized under two parts: the regulated market, where energy is traded through auctions, and the free market, where market participants freely negotiate the price and quantity of electricity. Although revenues obtained in the regulated market tend to be lower than in the free market, the auctions’ results show that investors still value the lesser degree of uncertainty associated with the regulated market. However, a growing interest in the free market by investors is recognized since the price of electricity tends to be higher. Therefore, this study investigates four free market price scenarios to assess the expected return for investors, using the traditional discounted cash flow approach complemented with Monte Carlo simulation to address market uncertainty. The study breaks new ground by capturing the weekly price fluctuations and including the price elasticity of demand of the free market. The results seem to indicate that the disclos... [more]

Stationarity in the Prices of Energy Commodities. A Nonparametric Approach
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biofuels, energy commodities, nonparametric, panel, prices, stationarity testing
In this paper, we address the classical problem of testing for stationarity in the prices of energy-related commodities. A panel of fourteen time series of monthly prices is analyzed for the 1980−2020 period. Nine of the series are classical nonrenewable, GHG-emissions-intensive resources (coal, crude oil, natural gas), whereas the remaining, low-emission group includes both uranium and four commodities employed in biofuels (rapeseed, palm, and soybean oils, and ethanol). A nonparametric, bootstrap-based stationarity testing framework is employed. The main advantage of this procedure is its asymptotically model-free nature, being less sensitive than parametric tests to the risks of misspecification and detection of spurious unit roots, although it has the potential limitation of typically requiring larger samples than mainstream tools. Results suggest that most of the series analyzed may be trend stationary. The only exception would be crude oil, where different conclusions are obtaine... [more]

Acid Corrosion Analysis in the Initial Condensation Zone of a H2O/CO2 Turbine
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: acid corrosion, H2O/CO2 turbine, initial condensation zone, numerical simulation, performance degradation
A supercritical H2O/CO2 turbine is a key piece of equipment for the coal gasification in the supercritical water (CGSW) cycle to achieve conversion of heat into power. Compared with a traditional steam turbine, the working medium of an H2O/CO2 turbine has a relatively high CO2 concentration. In the initial condensation zone (ICZ), steam condenses into droplets on the turbine blades and the droplets combine with CO2 to form carbonic acid, which corrodes the turbine blades. In order to research the characteristics of acid corrosion in the ICZ of a H2O/CO2 turbine, the acid corrosion rate of the blades in the ICZ of the H2O/CO2 turbine was calculated and analyzed based on the three-dimensional CFD (3D CFD) method and a one-dimensional numerical model of CO2 corrosion. The results suggest that acid corrosion rates decrease stage by stage in the ICZ due to the reduction in temperature and pressure. Rotor blades in the first stage in the ICZ suffer the worst and form a corrosion zone at the... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: Cyclictest, interrupt, latency, multiprocessing, OpenAMP, system-on-chip, virtualization, Xen hypervisor
Smart grid endpoints need to use two environments within a processing system (PS), one with a Linux-type operating system (OS) using the Arm Cortex-A53 cores for management tasks, and the other with a standalone execution or a real-time OS using the Arm Cortex-R5 cores. The Xen hypervisor and the OpenAMP framework allow this, but they may introduce a delay in the system, and some messages in the smart grid need a latency lower than 3 ms. In this paper, the Linux thread latencies are characterized by the Cyclictest tool. It is shown that when Xen hypervisor is used, this scenario is not suitable for the smart grid as it does not meet the 3 ms timing constraint. Then, standalone execution as the real-time part is evaluated, measuring the delay to handle an interrupt created in programmable logic (PL). The standalone application was run in A53 and R5 cores, with Xen hypervisor and OpenAMP framework. These scenarios all met the 3 ms constraint. The main contribution of the present work is... [more]

Keywords: Model Predictive Control, modular multilevel converter, power management, real-time digital simulation
The multi-modular converter (MMC) technology is becoming the preferred option for the increased deployment of variable renewable energy sources (RES) into electrical power systems. MMC is known for its reliability and modularity. The fast adjustment of the MMC’s active/reactive powers, within a few milliseconds, constitutes a major research challenge. Subject: Materials
Keywords: bioLPG, biopropane, butyric acid, Catalysis, hydrothermal decarboxylation, Pt/C
Sustainable fuel-range hydrocarbons can be produced via the catalytic decarboxylation of biomass-derived carboxylic acids without the need for hydrogen addition. In this present study, 5 wt% platinum on carbon (Pt/C) has been found to be an effective catalyst for hydrothermally decarboxylating butyric acid in order to produce mainly propane and carbon dioxide. However, optimisation of the reaction conditions is required to minimise secondary reactions and increase hydrocarbon selectivity towards propane. To do this, reactions using the catalyst with varying parameters such as reaction temperatures, residence times, feedstock loading and bulk catalyst loading were carried out in a batch reactor. The highest yield of propane obtained was 47 wt% (close to the theoretical decarboxylation yield of 50 wt% on butyric acid basis), corresponding to a 96% hydrocarbon selectivity towards propane. The results showed that the optimum parameters to produce the highest yield of propane, from the rang... [more]
