April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: environmental management systems, food processing sector, Poland, renewable energy sources
The issue of environmental management systems in food processing companies is gaining importance due to the need to reduce water withdrawal, wastewater, air emissions, and waste generation. New technological solutions and innovations can reduce the negative effects of the enterprises’ production facilities on the environment. In Poland, the phenomenon of increasing use of the amount of renewable energy sources is influenced by, e.g., adopted national and EU legislation, development of new technologies in the field of energy, and increasing awareness of producers and consumers in the field of ecology and environmental protection. It is also important that the state creates favorable conditions for the use of renewable energy in micro-installations. The application goal of the study is to develop a procedure for improvement of the environmental management systems for food processing companies and increase the awareness of potential use and implementation of renewable energy sources by fo... Study on Annular Pressure Buildup in Offshore Heavy Oil Thermal Recovery Wells Considering Dissolved Gas Contained in Annuli
Hao Wang, Hui Zhang, Jun Li, Anming Chen, Jun Liu, Tengfei Sun, Cong Lin
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: annular pressure buildup, casing deformation, dissolved gas, experiment verification, offshore wells
In the offshore industry, especially heavy oil thermal recovery wells, due to the great temperature difference between the low-temperature seawater and high-temperature heavy oil, it is easy to cause the temperature increase of annular fluid in the operation process which will result in the annular pressure buildup phenomenon (APB). The increase of annulus pressure may lead to the failure of the casing and wellbore integrity, which will seriously affect the normal production and lead to great economic loss. In order to study the formation of APB and provide a basis for the field operation design, a radial full-size physical experiment of APB was carried out in this work and an annular pressure prediction model in the presence of dissolved gas was proposed based on the experimental results. The verification and comparison analyses of the full-liquid model and the dissolved gas model were conducted with the experimental data. Furthermore, the sensitivity analysis of the influence of the... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbonation–calcination, dispatchability, Energy Storage, heat to power, solids cycles
The cyclic carbonation-calcination of CaCO3 in fluidized bed reactors not only offers a possibility for CO2 capture but can at the same time be implemented for thermochemical energy storage (TCES), a feature which will play an important role in a future that has an increasing share of non-dispatchable variable electricity generation (e.g., from wind and solar power). This paper provides a techno-economic assessment of an industrial-scale calcium looping (CaL) process with simultaneous TCES and CO2 capture. The process is assumed to make profit by selling dispatchable electricity and by providing CO2 capture services to a certain nearby emitter (i.e., transport and storage of CO2 are not accounted). Thus, the process is connected to two other facilities located nearby: a renewable non-dispatchable energy source that charges the storage and a plant from which the CO2 in its flue gas flow is captured while discharging the storage and producing dispatchable electricity. The process, which... [more]

Yongchan Kim, Hyoung-Jin Lee, Tae-Seong Roh
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: re-entry, retropropulsion, reusable launch vehicle, trajectory
In this study, a minimum amount of required propellant was calculated by analyzing the sequence with various re-entry conditions. This study aims to obtain data related to variation in trajectory and required propellant weight according to various re-entry scenarios. The drag coefficient at various altitudes, velocities, and thrust was calculated through numerical simulations to raise the reliability of the results. The calculation results were compared to the optimal values extracted from the genetic algorithm. It was observed that the duration of the entry-burn phase is dominant to the total required propellant weight. As a general tendency, high entry-burn starting altitude, high ending Mach number, and low landing-burn starting thrust make the required propellant weight low. However, if the entry-burn ending condition is set to the Mach number, it is necessary to select an appropriate re-entry condition. Additionally, from comparisons with the optimized results, it was confirmed th... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery model, battery voltage model, electric circuit model (ECM), KiBaM model, SOC prediction, variable load response
This paper proposes a battery voltage model that is suitable for variable operation. The model combines the features of the Kinetic Battery Model (KiBaM) and voltage model (VM), and it improves the accuracy and quality of the solution, addressing four characteristics of operation: charging, discharging, rest after charge, and rest after discharge. This model will be known as 4-KiVM and shows low impact on computational burden. The proposed model can keep track of the voltage even when the load is inverted or turned off. To calibrate and validate the model, a NASA-provided dataset was used composed of a battery with variable charges and discharges, simulating real applications. A metaheuristic method based on tabu search is used to extract constants from this dataset and validate this hybrid model. In addition, a comparison of performance of the 4-KiVM against KiBaM, VM, and the electric circuit model (ECM) was made, showing its advantages. The results of the simulations showed a good p... Arnold Pabian, Katarzyna Bilińska-Reformat, Barbara Pabian
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy companies, future of management, sustainable development, sustainable management, younger generation
The future of the energy sector depends on the younger generation. The paper presents the results of the study, the aim of which was to determine to what extent younger generation is pro-ecological and pro-social, and whether they will include pro-ecological and pro-social activities in the management of energy companies. It is especially important to implement sustainable management in the energy sector. The study found that only 33.9% of young people are highly pro-ecological and 28.6% highly pro-social. As many as 83.0% of the younger generation show low and medium interest in environmental protection. Declarations of young people concerning high degree of inclusion of pro-ecological and pro-social activities in management are at the level of 49.9% and 58.1%. However, in many cases, these intentions do not coincide with the high pro-ecological and pro-social attitude of young people. This means that their future activity for sustainable management may be low. According to the survey... [more]

Damian Grzechca, Paweł Rybka, Roman Pawełczyk
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: anomaly detection, autoencoders, crossing barrier machines, neural networks, outlier detection, supply current
Barrier machines are a key component of automatic level crossing systems ensuring safety on railroad crossings. Their failure results not only in delayed railway transportation, but also puts human life at risk. To prevent faults in this critical safety element of automatic level crossing systems, it is recommended that fault and anomaly detection algorithms be implemented. Both algorithms are important in terms of safety (information on whether a barrier boom has been lifted/lowered as required) and predictive maintenance (information about the condition of the mechanical components). Here, the authors propose fault models for barrier machine fault and anomaly detection procedures based on current waveform observation. Several algorithms were applied and then assessed such as self-organising maps (SOM), autoencoder artificial neural network, local outlier factor (LOF) and isolation forest. The advantage of the proposed solution is there is no change of hardware, which is already homol... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Harper sphere search, power losses, Tabu search, unbalanced system
The main aim of this work was the maximization of the energy saving of balanced and unbalanced distribution power systems via system reconfiguration and the optimum capacitor’s bank choice, which were estimated by using a new algorithm: modified Tabu search and Harper sphere search (MTS-HSSA). The results demonstrated that the proposed method is appropriate for energy saving and improving performance compared with other methods reported in the literature for IEEE 33-bus adopted systems, including large scale systems such as IEEE 119 and the IEEE 123 unbalanced distribution system. Moreover, it can be used for unbalanced distribution systems distributed generators (DGs). The results demonstrated that the proposed method (the optimal choice of shunt capacitor (SC) banks and the optimal reconfiguration via the proposed algorithm) is appropriate for energy saving compared with different strategies for energy saving, which included distributed generation (DG) at different cost levels.

Michał Sabat, Dariusz Baczyński
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric energy demand, K nearest neighbors (kNN) algorithm, nondominated solutions, Pareto fronts in forecasting, power engineering challenges
Transmission, distribution, and micro-grid system operators are struggling with the increasing number of renewables and the changing nature of energy demand. This necessitates the use of prognostic methods based on ever shorter time series. This study depicted an attempt to develop an appropriate method by introducing a novel forecasting model based on the idea to use the Pareto fronts as a tool to select data in the forecasting process. The proposed model was implemented to forecast short-term electric energy demand in Poland using historical hourly demand values from Polish TSO. The study rather intended on implementing the range of different approaches—scenarios of Pareto fronts usage than on a complex evaluation of the obtained results. However, performance of proposed models was compared with a few benchmark forecasting models, including naïve approach, SARIMAX, kNN, and regression. For two scenarios, it has outperformed all other models by minimum 7.7%.

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: converting, corrugated cardboard, finite element method, numerical homogenization, shell structures, strain energy equivalence, transverse shear
Corrugated cardboard is an ecological material, mainly because, in addition to virgin cellulose fibers also the fibers recovered during recycling process are used in its production. However, the use of recycled fibers causes slight deterioration of the mechanical properties of the corrugated board. In addition, converting processes such as printing, die-cutting, lamination, etc. cause micro-damage in the corrugated cardboard layers. In this work, the focus is precisely on the crushing of corrugated cardboard. A series of laboratory experiments were conducted, in which the different types of single-walled corrugated cardboards were pressed in a fully controlled manner to check the impact of the crush on the basic material parameters. The amount of crushing (with a precision of 10 micrometers) was controlled by a precise FEMat device, for crushing the corrugated board in the range from 10 to 70% of its original thickness. In this study, the influence of crushing on bending, twisting and... [more]

Keywords: data analysis, data prediction, electrical installation, Industry 4.0, reliability, sensor network, virtual platform
Nowadays products are developed at a rapid pace, with shorter and shorter times between concept and go to market. With the advancement in technology, product designers and manufacturers can use new approaches to obtain information about their products and transform it into knowledge that they can use to improve the product. We developed the Poket Framework platform to facilitate the generation of product knowledge. In order to increase the reliability and safety in operation of electrical equipment, an evaluation is proposed, through tests and studies, using the original Poket Framework platform. Thus, several tests and studies were performed, which included testing and analyzing the correct integration in several use cases and remote data acquisition, and testing and analysis of the Poket Framework using literature established data sets of household appliances and electrical systems. Possible evolutions and Poket platform extensions are also considered.

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dump load, electronic load controller, frequency regulation, symmetrical switching
Micro-hydro power plants (μHPPs) are a major energy source in grid-isolated zones because they do not require reservoirs and dams to be built. μHPPs operate in a standalone mode, but a continuously varying load generates voltage unbalances and frequency fluctuations which can cause long-term damage to plant components. One method of frequency regulation is the use of alternating current-alternating current (AC-AC) converters as an electronic load controller (ELC). The disadvantage of AC-AC converters is reactive power consumption with the associated decrease in both the power factor and the capacity of the alternator to deliver current. To avoid this disadvantage, we proposed two rectifier topologies combined with symmetrical switching. However, the performance of the frequency regulation loop with each topology remains unknown. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of the frequency regulation loop when each topology, with a symmetrical switching form, w... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AHP, MCDM, multiple-criteria decision-making methods, PROMETHEE II, quarry, Tambura
Mining design is usually evaluated with different multiple-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods when it comes to large open pit or underground ore mines, but it is not used on quarry sites. Since Croatia is mostly mining stone, the implementation of such methods in decision making of the quarry mine design is imperative but left out. In this paper, the PROMETHEE II and AHP decision-making methods are implemented on the quarry site to find out the best final quarry design contour. By implementing the MCDM methods, the best quarry model was chosen based on 22 different criteria parameters out of three final quarry designs. The chosen model is not only financially sound but also has the least environmental impact.

Zhengrong Jiang, Weijun Gao
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, enclosure boundary, high-density residential district, lift-up design, pedestrian wind environment
A comfortable wind environment favors the sustainable development of urban residential districts and public health. However, the rapid growth of high-rise urban residential districts leads to low wind velocity environments in summer. This study examines the influence of enclosure boundary patterns and lift-up design on the wind environment and proposes an optimization strategy to improve the low wind velocity environment in residential districts in summer. A typical residential district in Hangzhou was selected; the average wind velocity, calm wind zone ratio and comfortable wind zone ratio were selected as the evaluation indexes. The wind environment for different enclosure boundary patterns and lift-up designs were obtained via computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The results indicate that the pedestrian wind environment is greatly improved in residential districts by reducing the height/width of the enclosure boundary, increasing the permeability rate and adopting a lift-... April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biodiesel, Ethanol, Torulaspora globosa, yeast lipids, zinc
It was obtained that the yeast Torulaspora globosa VKPM Y-953 is suitable for the production of biodiesel fuel. Zinc plays an important regulatory role in the metabolism of the studied strain. The study of the growth parameters and the fatty acid profile of the yeast T. globosa showed that the limitation of its growth by ethanol, at different concentrations of zinc in the medium, considerably influences the chemical composition and the energy content of yeast cells, but not their yield by weight (Yx/s). The increased concentrations of zinc in the medium, in combination with the yeast growth limitation by ethanol, elevated the content of lipids in the cells by 28% and diminished the content of proteins by 14%. At the same time, the limitation of yeast growth by zinc decreased Yx/s and energy (ηX/S) by 2.6 and 3.1 times, respectively. In this case, the content of lipids in cells fell by 72%, while that of proteins rose by 65%. The fatty acid profile of the T. globosa cells was used to es... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: capacity contribution, capacity credit, capacity value, effective load carrying capability (ELCC), hydropower, intermittent generation, loss of load expectation (LOLE), loss of load probability (LOLP), variable dispatchable capacity
The most robust methods to determine the capacity contribution from intermittent sources combine load curve, variable generation profile, and dispatchable generators’ data to calculate any new inserted variable source’s capacity value in the power system. However, these methods invariably adopt the premise that the system’s dispatchable generators’ capacity is constant. That is an unacceptable limitation when the energy mix has a large share of hydroelectric sources. Hydroelectric plants are dispatchable sources with variable maximum power output over time, varying mainly according to the reservoirs’ level. This article develops a method that makes it possible to calculate the capacity value from renewable resources when the dispatchable generation units of an electric system have variable capacity. The authors apply the method to calculate the capacity value from solar and wind sources in Brazil as an exercise. By abandoning the hypothesis of constant dispatchable capacity, the develo... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: differential evolution optimization, multi-objective optimization, skewed rotor, switched reluctance machine, torque ripple
Minimizing torque ripple in electrical machines for a given application is not a straightforward task, especially when the application imposes certain constraints. There are many techniques to improve torque ripple, either design-based or control-based. In this paper, a new geometry for switched reluctance machines based on rotor poles skewing is proposed to minimize torque ripple. This paper describes a methodology to design an asymmetrical skew rotor—switched reluctance machine using a multi-objective differential evolutionary algorithm. The main parameters of the optimization process are defined, as is the optimization methodology to obtain an improved design with less torque ripple than a conventional one. Moreover, the analytical formulas used in the optimization method, as well as the optimization technique, are deduced and explained in detail. The mathematical model used to simulate the electrical machine and the power converter are also described. Two-dimensional and three-dime... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: artificial neural networks, Gaussian process regression, global horizontal irradiance, Machine Learning, solar resource, support vector regression, time series forecasting
The proliferation of photovoltaic (PV) power generation in power distribution grids induces increasing safety and service quality concerns for grid operators. The inherent variability, essentially due to meteorological conditions, of PV power generation affects the power grid reliability. In order to develop efficient monitoring and control schemes for distribution grids, reliable forecasting of the solar resource at several time horizons that are related to regulation, scheduling, dispatching, and unit commitment, is necessary. PV power generation forecasting can result from forecasting global horizontal irradiance (GHI), which is the total amount of shortwave radiation received from above by a surface horizontal to the ground. A comparative study of machine learning methods is given in this paper, with a focus on the most widely used: Gaussian process regression (GPR), support vector regression (SVR), and artificial neural networks (ANN). Two years of GHI data with a time step of 10... [more]

Towards the Hydrogen Economy—A Review of the Parameters That Influence the Efficiency of Alkaline Water Electrolyzers
Ana L. Santos, Maria-João Cebola, Diogo M. F. Santos
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: alkaline water electrolysis, cell components, efficiency, electrocatalysts, overpotential
Environmental issues make the quest for better and cleaner energy sources a priority. Worldwide, researchers and companies are continuously working on this matter, taking one of two approaches: either finding new energy sources or improving the efficiency of existing ones. Hydrogen is a well-known energy carrier due to its high energy content, but a somewhat elusive one for being a gas with low molecular weight. This review examines the current electrolysis processes for obtaining hydrogen, with an emphasis on alkaline water electrolysis. This process is far from being new, but research shows that there is still plenty of room for improvement. The efficiency of an electrolyzer mainly relates to the overpotential and resistances in the cell. This work shows that the path to better electrolyzer efficiency is through the optimization of the cell components and operating conditions. Following a brief introduction to the thermodynamics and kinetics of water electrolysis, the most recent dev... [more]

Keywords: coupled chaotic adaptive synchronous observer, coupled chaotic synchronous observe, master and slave system, synchronization
Synchronization of N-slave chaotic systems with a master system is a challenging task, particularly in recent times. In this paper, a novel methodology is proposed for synchronizing the N number of slave systems with a master system. The proposed methodology is based on coupled adaptive synchronous observers. The difference between the corresponding states of master and slave systems is converged to the origin by means of a novel feedback control scheme to achieve synchronization between the master and slave systems. The efficacy of the proposed methodology is verified through a simulation of FitzHugh−Nagumo non-linear systems in MATLAB. The simulation results validate and prove claims, and these systems are successfully synchronized by CCS and CCAS observer-based control.

Keywords: thermal mismatch, thermal waste energy, thermoelectric generator
Thermoelectric generators harvesting energy from exhaust gases usually present a temperature mismatch between modules, due to the gradual cooling of the gases along the flow direction. The way modules that produce unequal voltages are connected has a deep impact on the overall power output. A further step in the prediction of thermoelectric production is to consider the complete layout of the thermoelectric modules and not consider them as isolated systems. In this work, a model to predict the electric behavior of thermoelectric generators for automotive applications at different points of operation is presented. The model allows testing of serial-parallel connection configurations. The results present good agreement with experimental data. This model could be used on similar light duty vehicles with similar engines as the engine used in this work and using similar configuration of thermoelectric generators. Simulated scenarios considering realistic operating conditions in a light duty... [more]
