April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: artificial neural network, control short-term overvoltage, low voltage distributions lines, overvoltage forecast, prosumer
Among the electrical problems observed from the solar irradiation variability, the electrical energy quality and the energetic dispatch guarantee stand out. The great revolution in batteries technologies has fostered its usage with the installation of photovoltaic system (PVS). This work presents a proposition for voltage regulation for residential prosumers using a set of scalable power batteries in passive mode, operating as a consumer device. The mitigation strategy makes decisions acting directly on the demand, for a storage bank, and the power of the storage element is selected in consequence of the results obtained from the power flow calculation step combined with the prediction of the solar radiation calculated by a recurrent neural network Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) type. The results from the solar radiation predictions are used as subsidies to estimate, the state of the power grid, solving the power flow and evidencing the values of the electrical voltages 1-min enabling t... April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: carbon emission, construction, energy consumption, lean techniques, life cycle assessment, processes, structural optimization
For decades, among other industries, the construction sector has accounted for high energy consumption and emissions. As the energy crisis and climate change have become a growing concern, mitigating energy usage is a significant issue. The operational and end of life phases are all included in the building life cycle stages. Although the operation stage accounts for more energy consumption with higher carbon emissions, the embodied stage occurs in a time-intensive manner. In this paper, an attempt has been made to review the existing methods, aiming to lower the consumption of energy and carbon emission in the construction buildings through optimizing the construction processes, especially with the lean construction approach. First, the energy consumption and emissions for primary construction materials and processes are introduced. It is followed by a review of the structural optimization and lean techniques that seek to improve the construction processes. Then, the influence of thes... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: connection mode, core structure, electric field, finite element method, hollow winding, insulation design, medium frequency transformer
The multi-winding medium frequency transformer (MMFT) has attracted widespread attention, since its application in power electronic transformers can simplify the system structure and reduce the volume and weight. However, the special working conditions of MMFT due to high voltage and high power density increase the difficulty of insulation design for MMFT. For this issue, this paper presents a comprehensive analysis of electric filed characteristics for MMFT. First, the electric field model of MMFT is established using the 2-D finite element method. Based on it, the influences of connection mode, core structure, and hollow winding on the electric field characteristics of MMFT are studied, including the overall electric field distribution, maximum electric field intensity, and the electric field intensity along a fixed path. The results show that there are differences in the maximum electric field intensity for different connection modes and different core structures, which provides ref... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: elites, Energy, participation, policy process, policy-making, unregulated market, Water, water–energy nexus
Energy and water have faced important levels of conflicts in the last 20−25 years in Chile. However, the way that they have been politically addressed in the last decade differs. These differences emerge from how these fields have been historically configurated, impacting on how the policy problems and policy options have been framed. Using thematic analysis of 93 interviews and documentary analysis, this article analyzes by contrasting two participatory processes which nourish the formulation of the energy and water policies in Chile in 2014−2015. It seeks to understand the factors that may influence why the development, impact and inclusion of new voices in public policies related to water and energy have been different, and how that can impact the water−energy nexus. Five factors emerge as determinants in this difference: structure of use, number of actors, governance and institutional framework, elite conformation, and legal framework. These factors impacted the policy processes an... [more]

Keywords: battery management systems, lithium-ion battery, Modelling, state-of-charge
Energy storage systems (ESSs) are critically important for the future of electric vehicles. Despite this, the safety and management of ESSs require improvement. Battery management systems (BMSs) are vital components in ESS systems for Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). One parameter that is included in the BMS is the state-of-charge (SoC) of the battery. SoC has become an active research area in recent years for battery electric vehicle (BEV) LIBs, yet there are some challenges: the LIB configuration is nonlinear, making it hard to model correctly; it is difficult to assess internal environments of a LIB (and this can be different in laboratory conditions compared to real-world conditions); and these discrepancies can lead to raising the instability of the LIB. Therefore, further advancement is required in order to have higher accuracy in SoC estimation in BEV LIBs. SoC estimation is a key BMS feature, and precise modeling and state estimation will improve stable operation. This review disc... [more]
Design Optimisation of a Current-Fed Solid-State Transformer for MV Grid-Connected Applications
Essam Hussain, Mohammad Abusara, Suleiman Sharkh
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: grid connected, optimisation, power losses, solid state transformer
For integrating large batteries in the medium voltage grid, current fed solid-state transformers offer galvanic isolation and a significant weight and size reduction. While the power losses increase with frequency and flux density, the core volume is contrariwise. Therefore, a design optimisation to achieve minimum losses and/or a minimum volume is essential. An optimisation strategy is proposed in this paper to find the optimum operating frequency and core flux density under certain practical constraints such as winding voltage per turn, clearance between transformer windings, saturation flux density and minimum efficiency. Differently from previous works, the proposed strategy provides a holistic approach for the design considering all main power losses from all main components using nonsinusoidal voltage waveforms and different operating conditions. Analytical equations for the power losses calculation and the cores design are derived and validated using ANSYS and MATLAB Simulink so... [more]

Keywords: biodiesel, experimental fluctuations, fuel blending, JETA-1, mechanical behavior, principal component analysis (PCA), PT6A-61A engine
Biofuels are important additives to conventional fuels in combustion engines of the transport sector, as they reduce atmospheric emissions and promote environmental-friendly production chains. The mechanical and thermal performance of a PT6A-61A engine on a test bench of the Colombian Air Force operating with blends of JETA-1 and Biodiesel up to 25% volume values of substitution is evaluated in this work. Experimental results show that blends are operationally reliable up to 15% volume content. In that range, the engine operation is not compromised in terms of response variables. Moreover, experimental properties of fuel blends show that the freezing point—which is the most critical variable, does not comply with aeronautical regulations. The system dynamics are subject to several variations in the test parameters, which mainly affected fuel flow, Inter-Turbine Temperature (ITT), and engine performance. A Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is performed over the experimental results to... [more]
Optimal Transmission Line Switching to Improve the Reliability of the Power System Considering AC Power Flows
Paul Masache, Diego Carrión, Jorge Cárdenas
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: contingency analysis, line switching, mixed integer nonlinear programming, optimal power flows, optimal transmission switching
The reliability of the electrical system is a fundamental study that is carried out to determine the possible deficiencies that an electrical system can have in case of failures, since a failure can cause disturbances, power cuts, and load disconnections. For this reason, Optimal Transmission Switching (OTS) with Optimal AC Power Flows (OPF-AC) is used to reduce disturbances when faults occur and minimize equipment load and disconnections, but OTS offers possible switches in order to make it possible to reduce the damage that can be done for a fault with operating limitations in voltage, power, and angular deviation. However, to have a complete study, it is proposed to use a reliability analysis through contingency ranking to know the risks that a switched system may have at the time of simultaneous or consecutive failures. In addition, a load capacity investigation is conducted to determine if the transmission lines are within their operating limits. The study presents an analysis of... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flow model calibration, scanning lidar, wind resource assessment
The planning and realization of wind energy projects requires an as accurate and precise wind resource estimation as possible. Standard procedures combine shorter on-site measurements with the application of numerical models. The uncertainties of the numerical data generated from these models are, particularly in complex onshore terrain, not just rather high but typically not well quantified. In this article we propose a methodology for using a single scanning Doppler wind lidar device to calibrate the output data of a numerical flow model and with this not just quantify but potentially also reduce the uncertainties of the final wind resource estimate. The scanning lidar is configured to perform Plan Position Indicator (PPI) scans and the numerical flow data are projected onto this geometry. Deviations of the derived from the recorded line-of-sight wind speeds are used to identify deficiencies of the model and as starting point for an improvement and tuning. The developed methodology i... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: dead zone, equivalent magnetic circuit (EMC), magnetization distribution, multi-pole permanent magnet
In multi-pole permanent magnets (PMs) such a ring-type PMs, as multi-poles are magnetized in one segment, the ends of each pole are weakly magnetized, which is known as the dead zone. Thus, when analyzing characteristics of the motor with multi-pole PMs, accurate results can be obtained by considering the magnetization distribution. For this reason, this paper proposed an equivalent magnetic circuit (EMC) for external-rotor surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors (SPMSMs) considering the dead zone to analyze the effects of the dead zone on the characteristics of the motor. As the magnetization in the dead zone gradually decreases toward the end of the pole, the magnetization distribution is assumed to have a trapezoidal shape. To describe the magnetization distribution, each pole was divided into several elements, and the equivalent residual magnetic flux density was applied to the elements of the dead zone. Finally, the validity of the proposed EMC was verified by comparin... [more]

Keywords: additive manufacturing, iron losses, magnetic properties, selective laser melting, soft magnetic materials, transformer
Additive manufacturing of ferromagnetic materials for electrical machine applications is maturing. In this work, a full E-type transformer core is printed, characterized, and compared in terms of performance with a conventional Goss textured core. For facilitating a modular winding and eddy current loss reduction, the 3D printed core is assembled from four novel interlocking components, which structurally imitate the E-type core laminations. Both cores are compared at approximately their respective optimal working conditions, at identical magnetizing currents. Due to the superior magnetic properties of the Goss sheet conventional transformer core, 10% reduced efficiency (from 80.5% to 70.1%) and 34% lower power density (from 59 VA/kg to 39 VA/kg) of the printed transformer are identified at operating temperature. The first prototype transformer core demonstrates the state of the art and initial optimization step for further development of additively manufactured soft ferromagnetic comp... [more]

Lavr Vetoshkin, Zdeněk Müller
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: power system modeling, power system stability, renewables, small-signal stability, synchronverter, virtual inertia
The paper investigates the stability of a power system with synchronverters. A synchronverter is a control strategy for voltage source converters that introduces virtual inertia by mimicking synchronous machines. The authors picked a commonly known IEEE 9 bus and IEEE 39 bus test case systems for the test case studies. The paper presents the power system’s modal analysis with Voltage Source Converters (VSCs) controlled as synchronverters, vector control, or Rate of Change of Frequency-based Virtual Synchronous Generator, thus comparing different approaches to VSC control. The first case study compares selected control algorithms, the IEEE 9 bus system, with one VSC in the paper. The results demonstrate the benefits of synchronverters over other control strategies. The system with synchronverters has a higher minimal damping ratio, which is proven to be the case by numerical simulations. In the second case study, the effects of virtual inertia placement were investigated. The computatio... [more]

Currents’ Physical Components (CPC) theory with spectral component representation is proposed as a generic grid interpretation method for detecting variations and structures. It is shown theoretically and validated experimentally that scattered and reactive CPC currents are highly suited for anomaly detection. CPC are enhanced by recursively disassembling the currents into 6 scattered subcomponents and 22 subcomponents overall, where additional anomalies dominate the subcurrents. Further disassembly is useful for anomaly detection and for grid deciphering. It is shown that the newly introduced syntax is highly effective for identifying variations even when the detected signals are in the order of 10−3 compared to conventional methods. The admittance physical components’ transfer functions, Y(ω), have been shown to improve the physical sensory function. The approach is exemplified in two scenarios demonstrating much higher sensitivity than classical electrical measurements. The proposed... [more]

Keywords: decoupled renewable power generation, fast active power-frequency control, frequency stability assessment, PHIL
Future electrical power systems will be dominated by power electronic converters, which are deployed for the integration of renewable power plants, responsive demand, and different types of storage systems. The stability of such systems will strongly depend on the control strategies attached to the converters. In this context, laboratory-scale setups are becoming the key tools for prototyping and evaluating the performance and robustness of different converter technologies and control strategies. The performance evaluation of control strategies for dynamic frequency support using fast active power regulation (FAPR) requires the urgent development of a suitable power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) setup. In this paper, the most prominent emerging types of FAPR are selected and studied: droop-based FAPR, droop derivative-based FAPR, and virtual synchronous power (VSP)-based FAPR. A novel setup for PHIL-based performance evaluation of these strategies is proposed. The setup combines the adva... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: bottom-up, caving method, filling method, greenhouse gas emissions, underground mining
China recently implemented a “Green Mine” policy focused on promoting the filling method, aiming to mitigate the environmental impacts of underground mining; nevertheless, quantitative inventories have rarely been provided to support or negate such promotion, especially from a life-cycle perspective. Accordingly, this paper proposes a bottom-up model for estimating life-cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from underground metal mines using either filling or caving methods. Two filling-based (Luohe and Longtangyan) and two caving-based (Maogong and Xiaowanggou) iron mines were studied; their direct GHG emissions were 0.576, 0.278, 2.130, and 1.425 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per kiloton-extracted ore (t CO2 eq/kt), respectively. When indirect GHG emissions were considered, the results increased to 17.386, 15.211, 5.554, and 5.602 t CO2 eq/kt, respectively. In contrast to popular belief, such results demonstrate that promoting the filling method can potentially raise the overall G... [more]

Keywords: building integrated PV panels, levelized cost of energy, water flow glazing
The new paradigm of Net Zero Energy buildings is a challenge for architects and engineers, especially in buildings with large glazing areas. Water Flow Glazing (WFG) is a dynamic façade technology shown to reduce heating and cooling loads for buildings significantly. Photovoltaic panels placed on building roofs can generate enough electricity from solar energy without generating greenhouse gases in operation or taking up other building footprints. This paper investigates the techno-economic viability of a grid-connected solar photovoltaic system combined with water flow glazing. An accurate assessment of the economic and energetic feasibility is carried out through simulation software and on-site tests on an actual prototype. The assessment also includes the analysis of global warming potential reduction. A prototype with WFG envelope has been tested. The WFG prototype actual data reported primary energy savings of 62% and 60% CO2 equivalent emission reduction when comparing WFG to a r... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: ductile fracture, fatigue-induced failure, HCLPF, inelastic seismic time history analysis, nuclear component, seismic capacity, seismic fragility analysis, strain-based seismic criteria
The main purpose of this study is to investigate the feasibility of the seismic fragility analysis (FA) with the strain-based failure modes for the nuclear metal components retaining pressure boundary. Through this study, it is expected that we can find analytical ways to enhance the high confidence of low probability of failure (HCLPF) capacity potentially contained in the conservative seismic design criteria required for the nuclear metal components. Another goal is to investigate the feasibility of the seismic FA to be used as an alternative seismic design rule for beyond-design-basis earthquakes. To do this, the general procedures of the seismic FA using the inelastic seismic analysis for the nuclear metal components are investigated. Their procedures are described in detail by the exampled calculations for the surge line nozzles connecting hot leg piping and the pressurizer, known as one of the seismic fragile components in NSSS (Nuclear Steam Supply System). Keywords: DSM, energy–water–carbon synergetic optimization, mixed-integer linear programming, power structure transformation, uncertainty
Studies on the energy−water−CO2 synergetic relationship is an effective way to help achieve the peak CO2 emission target and carbon neutral goal in global countries. One of the most valid way is to adjust through the electric power structure transformation. In this study, a mixed-integer linear resource planning model is proposed to investigate the energy−water−CO2 synergetic optimization relationship, concerning the uncertainties in the fuel price and power demand prediction process. Coupled with multiple CO2 emissions and water policy scenarios, Beijing, the capital city of China, is chosen as a case study. Results indicate that the demand-side management (DSM) level and the stricter environmental constraints can effectively push Beijing’s power supply system in a much cleaner direction. The energy−water−CO2 relationship will reach a better balance under stricter environmental constraints and higher DSM level. However, the achievement of the energy−water−CO2 synergetic optimization w... [more]

Keywords: condition monitoring, histogram features, hydroelectric generators, partial discharges, PD recognition, PRPD denoising
In this paper, a novel image denoising algorithm and novel input features are proposed. The algorithm is applied to phase-resolved partial discharge (PRPD) diagrams with a single dominant partial discharge (PD) source, preparing them for automatic artificial-intelligence-based classification. It was designed to mitigate several sources of distortions often observed in PRPDs obtained from fully operational hydroelectric generators. The capabilities of the denoising algorithm are the automatic removal of sparse noise and the suppression of non-dominant discharges, including those due to crosstalk. The input features are functions of PD distributions along amplitude and phase, which are calculated in a novel way to mitigate random effects inherent to PD measurements. The impact of the proposed contributions was statistically evaluated and compared to classification performance obtained using formerly published approaches. Higher recognition rates and reduced variances were obtained using... [more]

This type of equipment is subject to various types of faults that can affect its components, in some cases also compromising its operation and, consequently, the electric power supply. Thus, in this paper, electromagnetic, thermal, and structural analysis of power transformers was carried out with the objective of providing the operator with information on the ideal moment for performing predictive maintenance, avoiding unplanned shutdowns. For this, computational simulations were performed using the finite element method (FEM) and, from that, the different transformer operation ways, nominal currents, inrush current, and short-circuit current were analyzed. In this perspective, analyses of the effects that thermal expansion, axial forces, and radial forces exerted were carried out, contributing to possible defects in this type of equipment. As a... Keywords: coastal systems, environmental impact, PRO, receptors, RED, salinity gradient energy, stress factors
Although the technologies involved in converting saline gradient energy (SGE) are rapidly developing, few studies have focused on evaluating possible environmental impacts. In this work, the environmental impacts of a hypothetical 50 kW RED plant installed in La Carbonera Lagoon, Yucatan, Mexico, are addressed. The theoretical support was taken from a literature review and analysis of the components involved in the pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) and reverse electrodialysis (RED) technologies. The study was performed under a three-stage scheme (construction, operation, and dismantling) for which the stress-inducing factors that can drive changes in environmental elements (receptors) were determined. In turn, the possible modifications to the dynamics of the ecosystem (responses) were assessed. Since it is a small-scale energy plant, only local impacts are expected. This study shows that a well-designed SGE plant can have a low environmental impact and also be of benefit to local ecotou... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biomethanization, P2F, P2G, P2M, Power-to-Fuel, Power-to-Gas
The time-range of applicability of various energy-storage technologies are limited by self-discharge and other inevitable losses. While batteries and hydrogen are useful for storage in a time-span ranging from hours to several days or even weeks, for seasonal or multi-seasonal storage, only some traditional and quite costly methods can be used (like pumped-storage plants, Compressed Air Energy Storage or energy tower). In this paper, we aim to show that while the efficiency of energy recovery of Power-to-Methane technology is lower than for several other methods, due to the low self-discharge and negligible standby losses, it can be a suitable and cost-effective solution for seasonal and multi-seasonal energy storage.
