Optimal Planning of Integrated Nuclear-Renewable Energy System for Marine Ships Using Artificial Intelligence Algorithm
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: Differential Evolution (DE), economic assessment, hybrid energy systems, lifecycle cost, Microreactors, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sensitivity analysis, ships
Ocean-going ships are one of the primary sources of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. Several actions are being taken to reduce the GHG emissions from maritime vessels, and integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) is one of them. Ocean-going marine ships need a large amount of reliable energy to support the propulsive load. Intermittency is one of the drawbacks of RESs, and penetration of RESs in maritime vessels is limited by the cargo carrying capacity and usable area of that ship. Other types of reliable energy sources need to be incorporated in ships to overcome these shortcomings of RESs. Some researchers proposed to integrate fossil fuel-based generators like diesel generators and renewable energy in marine vessels to reduce GHG emissions. As the penetration of RESs in marine ships is limited, fossil fuel-based generators provide most of the energy. Therefore, renewable and fossil fuel-based hybrid energy systems in maritime vessels can not reduce GHG emissions to the desired... [more]

Determination of the Backfilling Time for the Zinc and Lead Ore Deposits with Application of the BackfillCAD Model
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: BackfillCAD model, hydraulic sand backfilling, MineScape, strip mining
This article introduces a BackfillCAD model that relates to the determination of the backfilling time. The relationship of the individual model modules using a flow chart are characterized and presented. The main aim of the research was to determine the time of backfilling for the prospective deposits of zinc and lead ores in the Olkusz region in Poland. In the first stage of the research, laboratory tests were carried out on the backfilling mixture consisting of sand and water in a 1:1 volume ratio. In the laboratory tests, the content of grains below 0.1 mm, the washability, water permeability, and compressibility of the backfilling mixture were determined. After the standard requirements were met by the backfilling mixture, the arrangement of one-way and bidirectional strip excavations was designed. In the next stages, by means of computer aided-design MineScape software, maximum thicknesses of the ore-bearing dolomite layer (T21_VI) for four geological cross-sections were determine... [more]

Bi-Directional Power Flow in Switchgear with Static Transfer Switch Applied at Various Renewable Energies
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DC bus, IED, PCD, PCS, smart grid, STS, switchgear panel
In this study, we describe the development of a plug-in type of switchgear that can control bidirectional power flow. This switchgear system can connect distributed generations such as photovoltaic and wind turbine generation, and AC and DC loads. The proposed switchgear system consists of an inverter for connecting distributed generations and DC load, a static transfer switch (STS) that can control and interrupt the bidirectional power flow, and an intelligent electronic device (IED) that can control each facility using a communication system. Since the topology inside the switchgear is composed of DC bus, it can be operated as a plug-in type of system that can be used by simply connecting the converters of various distributed generations to the inverter in the developed switchgear system. In this study, we describe the overall structure of the proposed switchgear system and the operation of the components. In addition, prototypes of each facility are developed and the results of buil... [more]

Increasing the Energy-Efficiency in Vacuum-Based Package Handling Using Deep Q-Learning
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: automation, deep Q-learning, energy-efficiency, vacuum-based handling
Billions of packages are automatically handled in warehouses every year. The gripping systems are, however, most often oversized in order to cover a large range of different carton types, package masses, and robot motions. In addition, a targeted optimization of the process parameters with the aim of reducing the oversizing requires prior knowledge, personnel resources, and experience. This paper investigates whether the energy-efficiency in vacuum-based package handling can be increased without the need for prior knowledge of optimal process parameters. The core method comprises the variation of the input pressure for the vacuum ejector, compliant to the robot trajectory and the resulting inertial forces at the gripper-object-interface. The control mechanism is trained by applying reinforcement learning with a deep Q-agent. In the proposed use case, the energy-efficiency can be increased by up to 70% within a few hours of learning. It is also demonstrated that the generalization capab... [more]

Prospective Life Cycle Assessment: Effect of Electricity Decarbonization in Building Sector
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Biomass, building sector, decarbonization, electricity scenario, island, LCA, prospective, waste energy
The building sector is responsible for 43% of France’s final energy consumption and is strongly associated with a high environmental impact due to its high consumption of energy and natural resources. These impacts are significant in isolated islands. Due to its geographical isolation and an area of 2512 km2, Reunion Island has a heavily carbon-based economy with a high import rate of raw materials for the building sector. This study aimed to investigate the effect of electricity mix decarbonization on residential house environmental impact. The methodology consists of three parts: (i) evaluating environmental impacts of Single-Family Houses (SFH) using life cyce assessment(LCA), (ii) defining SFH typologies using the K-means clustering algorithm, and (iii) implementing energy scenario in LCA of SFH to assess decarbonization effect. The environmental results were particularly sensitive in the operational phase, with a decrease of 83% between 2020 to 2040 of the global warming potential... [more]

The Concept of Multiple Impacts of Renewable Energy Sources: A Critical Review
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: air pollution, co-benefits, employment, energy policy, energy poverty, GDP, multiple impacts of RES
Reaching climate neutrality by 2050 is one of the main long-term objectives of the European Union climate and energy policy, and renewable energy sources (RES) are integral parts of this transition. RES development results in many effects, direct and indirect, linked to each other, societal, local and individual, i.e., “multiple impacts of RES” (MI RES). These effects need to be carefully assessed and evaluated to obtain the full picture of energy field transformation and its context, and enable further development of RES. Nevertheless, the MI RES concept is often presented misleadingly and its scope varies throughout the literature. This paper provides a literature overview of the methodologies of this concept and presents a new concept of MI RES, respecting the difference between effects resulting from the implementation of RES and ultimate multiple impacts. We have summarized the effects into four groups: economic, social, environmental, and technical, which all lead to group of ult... [more]

Factors for Bioeconomy Development in EU Countries with Different Overall Levels of Economic Development
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: agriculture, bioeconomy, Biomass, EU countries, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The aim of this article is to indicate the rationale for the development of the bioeconomy in selected EU countries depending on their overall level of economic development. The research was based on four highly developed countries, i.e., Germany, France, Finland and Denmark, and four medium-developed countries, i.e., Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, and Slovakia for the period 2001−2018. Renewable energy consumption, biomass and agricultural production were analysed as determinants of the bioeconomy development. The question was also answered whether differences in terms of measures determining the level of bioeconomy development between countries with different levels of economic development during the studied period are decreasing or increasing, using sigma (σ)-convergence coefficients. It is shown that the development of the bioeconomy of the studied countries is related to their level of economic development. Applying Wavelet Filters in Wind Forecasting Methods
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: forecasting methods, wavelet transforms, wind energy
Wind is a physical phenomenon with uncertainties in several temporal scales, in addition, measured wind time series have noise superimposed on them. These time series are the basis for forecasting methods. This paper studied the application of the wavelet transform to three forecasting methods, namely, stochastic, neural network, and fuzzy, and six wavelet families. Wind speed time series were first filtered to eliminate the high-frequency component using wavelet filters and then the different forecasting methods were applied to the filtered time series. All methods showed important improvements when the wavelet filter was applied. It is important to note that the application of the wavelet technique requires a deep study of the time series in order to select the appropriate family and filter level. The best results were obtained with an optimal filtering level and improper selection may significantly affect the accuracy of the results.

Precise Evaluation of Gas−Liquid Two-Phase Flow Pattern in a Narrow Rectangular Channel with Stereology Method
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: air–water, flow pattern, image analysis, stereology, two-phase flow, visualization
The drive to increase the efficiency of processes based on two-phase flow demands the better precision and selection of boundary conditions in the process’ control. The two-phase flow pattern affects the phenomena of momentum, heat, and mass transfer. It becomes necessary to shift from its qualitative to quantitative evaluation. The description of the stationary structure has long been used in structural studies applied to metals and alloys. The description of a gas−liquid two-phase mixture is difficult because it changes in time and space. This paper presents a study of the precise determination of two-phase flow patterns based on stereological parameters analysis. The research area is shown against the flow map proposed by other researchers. The experiment was taken in the thin clear channel with dimensions of W = 50 × H = 1200 × T = 5 mm. The test method is based on the visualization of a two-phase air−water adiabatic flow pattern in the rectangular channel where superficial air vel... [more]

Segmentation of Food Consumers Based on Their Sustainable Attitude
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: consumer segmentation, consumers behavior, food products, responsible consumption, sustainable attitude, sustainable consumption
The proposed study aims to segment consumers based on a sustainable approach to the consumption of food. The shift in consumers’ attitudes towards more balanced food consumption can be one of the sustainability drivers for entire food chains and may result in more sustained energy usage in the whole food chain and implementation of farm to fork strategy to the practice. We considered consumers’ attitudes as a multidimensional construct. Under this assumption, we asked respondents a series of questions related to the cognitive, behavioral, and affective components of an attitude. Data were collected from a market survey run among 433 consumers. We identified three consumer segments. The “Doers” segment exhibits sustainable behavior to a greater extent than the others. At the same time, they have less knowledge about the concept of food sustainability while the affective dimension was developed on an average level. The “Conscious” segment had well-developed cognitive and affective dimens... [more]

Probing the Energy-Environmental Kuznets Curve Hypothesis in Oil and Natural Gas Consumption Models Considering Urbanization and Financial Development in Middle East Countries
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: economic growth, financial market development, natural gas consumption, oil consumption, urbanization
Economic growth, urbanization, and financial market development (FMD) may increase energy demand in any economy. Non-renewable sources of energy consumption, i.e., oil consumption and natural gas consumption (NGC), could have environmental consequences. We examine the effects of economic growth, urbanization, and FMD on the oil consumption and NGC in Middle East countries using the period 1975−2019. In the panel results, we found a positive effect of income and a negative effect of income-squared on oil and natural gas consumption. Hence, we corroborate the existence of the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis in oil and natural gas consumption models of the Middle East region. Urbanization has a positive effect on oil and natural gas consumption. FMD has a positive effect on oil consumption and has a negative effect on NGC. From the long-run, country-specific results, we validate the existence of the EKC hypothesis in the oil consumption models of Iran and Iraq. The EKC is als... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy supply diversity, geographic diversity, interconnections, islands, marine energy, power system stability, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, wind energy
To meet climate change goals, the decarbonisation of the UK electricity supply is crucial. Increased geographic diversity and resource use could help provide grid and market stability and reduce CO2 intensive balancing actions. The main purpose of this research is to investigate the impact of geographic diversity and Scottish island renewable energy on the UK network. This has been done by using the energy market modelling software PLEXOS with results validated using data for 2017/18. The model considers spatial diversification and forecasting errors by modelling day-ahead and intra-day markets with nodes for each distribution network operator region and island group. It was concluded that Scottish island renewable capacity could have a stabilising effect on the variability of renewables in terms of electricity generated, prices and forecasting errors, from the timescale of the entire year down to hours. Energy-Saving Strategies of Axial Flow Fans for Direct Dry Cooling System
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air-cooled condenser, axial flow fan, direct dry cooling system, energy-saving, heat exchanger, power consumption
The operating conditions of axial flow fans are closely related to the thermo-flow characteristics of the mechanical draft direct dry cooling system. Moreover, the uneven distribution of cooling air driven by axial flow fans may lead to the deterioration of the heat transfer capacity of air-cooled condensers (ACCs). Therefore, developing energy-saving operating methods for axial flow fans is very meaningful. In this work, two kinds of adjustment strategies to make the flow field more uniform are proposed for a 2 × 300 MW direct dry cooling power-generating unit. The performance of ACCs in the prevailing wind direction is predicted with the help of the macro heat exchanger model. It is found that the inlet air temperatures of fans are significantly reduced by proposed strategies, especially at high wind speeds. Moreover, the minimum cooling air can meet the cooling demand of ACCs for the strategy which made the air flow rates of all fans consistent. Compared with the case without adjust... [more]

Mechanistic Grey-Box Modeling of a Packed-Bed Regenerator for Industrial Applications
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: data-driven modeling, grey-box modeling, packed-bed regenerator, physical modeling, sensible thermal energy storage
Thermal energy storage is essential to compensate for energy peaks and troughs of renewable energy sources. However, to implement this storage in new or existing industries, robust and accurate component models are required. This work examines the development of a mechanistic grey-box model for a sensible thermal energy storage, a packed-bed regenerator. The mechanistic grey-box model consists of physical relations/equations and uses experimental data to optimize specific parameters of these equations. Using this approach, a basic model and two models with extensions I and II, which vary in their number from Equations (3) to (5) and parameters (3 to 6) to be fitted, are proposed. The three models’ results are analyzed and compared to existing models of the regenerator, a data-driven and a purely physical model. The results show that all developed grey-box models can extrapolate and approximate the physical behavior of the regenerator well. In particular, the extended model II shows exc... [more]

The Role of Political Economy in Energy Access: Public and Private Off-Grid Electrification in Tanzania
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: institutional economics, liberalization, off-grid energy access, organizational model, political economy, politics and electricity, power sector reform, system good
Off-grid renewable energy sources are dramatically altering the energy landscape in countries with low energy access. While techno-economic perspectives are already widely discussed, the political economy is largely ignored, particularly regarding the institutions providing electricity. Two of many ways that the task of electrification can be framed are: (1) as the duty of the government to provide a basic service to its people, or (2) as a goods that can be purchased from private players in a market system. Electrification in our country of focus, Tanzania, has developed a promising off-grid market as an increasing number of private players have recently become active there. While grid extension is still a priority for the government, solar home systems, which are estimated to make up more than half of all new connections by 2030, get surprisingly less attention in terms of coordination, political support, and policy frameworks. Subject: Materials
Keywords: cement, construction EGs, developing countries, embodied GHG emissions, input/output analysis, World Input/Output Database
Net-zero-energy buildings (ZEBs) that contribute to making annual energy consumption balances zero are effective measures for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the construction sector. As the application of ZEBs progresses, GHG emissions during the construction of buildings and the manufacturing of materials and products (called construction EG) account for a relatively large proportion of overall emissions. This study aimed to clarify construction EG as a means by which to formulate policies for the reduction of emissions in each country. The construction EGs of 43 countries from 2011 were analyzed. The 56-sector input/output table and CO2 emission data of the 2016 World Input/Output Database, published by the EU, were both used in this analysis. It was found that the construction sector accounted for the highest proportion of total CO2 emissions. Moreover, the fraction of construction EG tended to be higher in developing countries such as China and India, while developed cou... [more]

Adaptive Mode Selection Strategy for Series-Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicles Based on Variable Power Reserve
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adaptive mode selection, drivability, hybrid electric vehicle, mode switching, variable power reserve
When the series-parallel hybrid electric vehicle exits the pure electric mode, the battery provides power for the drive motor and integrated starter generator (ISG) to drive the vehicle and start the engine. If the battery discharge power is insufficient, the driving power will drop, which will inhibit the vehicle from accelerating and impair drivability. Considering that the mode selection strategy determines the timing of mode switching, this paper proposes an adaptive mode selection strategy based on variable power reserve to allow the vehicle to switch mode considering the battery power limitation. The effectiveness of this strategy is verified by simulation, and its influence on fuel consumption and battery utilization is analyzed. Compared with the mode selection strategy based on logic thresholds at the same initial battery state of charge (SOC), under the high-speed and aggressive US06 cycle, the total driving power drop is reduced by 74.2%, and the over-discharge power of the... Thus, there is a need to detect and correct these faults soon after they occur to minimize their impact on the system. This paper, therefore, suggests a fault handling process for the detection and elimination of faults in DH customer installations. The fault handling process is based on customer data analysis since many faults manifest in customer data. The fault handling process was based on an analysis of the results from the previous fault handling studies, as well as conducting a workshop with experts from the DH industry. During the workshop, different organizational and technical challenges related to fault handling were discussed. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: compressed gaseous hydrogen, hydrogen infrastructure, hydrogen transport, liquid hydrogen, liquid organic hydrogen carriers, truck routing
Carbon-free transportation is envisaged by means of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) propelled by hydrogen that originates from renewably electricity. However, there is a spatial and temporal gap in the production and demand of hydrogen. Therefore, hydrogen storage and transport remain key challenges for sustainable transportation with FCEVs. In this study, we propose a method for calculating a spatially resolved highway routing model for Germany to transport hydrogen by truck from the 15 production locations (source) to the 9683 fueling stations (sink) required by 2050. We consider herein three different storage modes, namely compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH2), liquid hydrogen (LH2) and liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC). Subject: Process Control
Keywords: asymmetry of the machine, dual three-phase PMSM, fault-tolerance, improved control loops, multi-phase
Multi-phase motors and generators are regarded with great fault tolerance capability, especially on open-circuit faults. Various mathematics analytical methods are applied for their fault control. In this paper, a fault-tolerant control strategy with asymmetric phase current for the open-circuit faults with arbitrary phases in the six-phase PMSM (six-phase permanent magnetic synchronous motor, 6P-PMSM) system, is proposed for better electrical and dynamical performance of the machine. An innovative mathematical model for PMSM under one to four-phase-open circuit faults are established considering the asymmetry of the machine. Combining with time-varying relations in machines’ working conditions, targeted decoupling transformation matrixes of every kind of open-circuit faults are settled by voltage equations under different faults.
