Comfort of Domestic Water in Residential Buildings: Flow, Temperature and Energy in Draw-Off Points: Field Study in Two Danish Detached Houses
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: domestic water comfort, energy use for hot water, hot water load profiles, hot water spatial distribution in residential buildings, temperature measurement, water flow
There is very little knowledge on the occupant actual hot water comfort (temperature and flow), usage practice, and routines (temporal and spatial distribution of hot water usage in a household). This paper describes the results from the total and hot water measurements in two Danish detached houses. The results show that, at the draw-off points, the temperature of 55 °C is never asked by the occupants, not even in the kitchen sink. The domestic water temperature differentiates depending on the function of the draw-off point, with the shower and kitchen taps being most energy- and water-intense. They constitute around 90% of the hot water use in the house. Shower units on average demand for highest temperature (i.e., 35.5 °C to 40.4 °C). Hand washing operates, on average, at temperature between 20.5 °C to 26.5 °C. Average water temperature at the taps located in utility room varies between 23 °C to 26 °C. These in-depth insight in the total and hot water use in two new-built low energy... [more]

Influence of Errors in Known Constants and Boundary Conditions on Solutions of Inverse Heat Conduction Problem
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: bias, boundary condition, error, gradient method, inverse heat conduction problem
This work examines the effects of the known boundary conditions on the accuracy of the solution in one-dimensional inverse heat conduction problems. The failures in many applications of these problems are attributed to inaccuracy of the specified constants and boundary conditions. Since the boundary conditions and material properties in most thermal problems are imposed with uncertainty, the effects of their inaccuracy should be understood prior to the inverse analyses. The deviation from the exact solution has been examined for each case according to the errors in material properties, boundary location, and known boundary conditions. The results show that the effects of such errors are dramatic. Based on these results, the applicability and limitations of the inverse heat conduction analyses have been evaluated and discussed.

Food Sector as an Interactive Business World: A Framework for Research on Innovations
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: business networks, business relationships, co-creation, food markets, open innovations, sustainable food supply
The objective of this paper is to enhance the dominant research perspective of innovations in the food market (power or supply chain centric) with an interactive/network approach. Many scholars identify the development challenges facing the food sector, including economic factors, changes in lifestyle, climate change, changes to the food consumption mix, shrinkage of Earth’s resources and interactions between food production and the environment, in the context of sustainable development. A new approach to innovations in the food market may shift it towards a more sustainable path of development. Based on a literature review, we present the specific conditions for innovation in the food market and discuss previous research as being focused on the power of operators and flows in supply chains. Methodologically, this paper puts these considerations in the context of interaction and business networks. We note that the concept of power and dependence can be embedded with the concept of inte... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: airflow network model, facility operation methods, hygrothermal simulation model
Several methods for appropriate control of the hygrothermal environment in museums to prevent the deterioration of cultural artifacts were presented in previous studies. However, few detailed hygrothermal simulation models have been used considering the hygrothermal performance of building components and airflow through gaps. Furthermore, hygrothermal properties of a type of storage facility with buffer spaces prevailing in Japan have not been quantitatively evaluated. The objectives of this study were to develop a detailed numerical model of a museum storage room with buffer spaces exhibiting high humidity during summer and to quantitatively evaluate the potential factors causing it; the inflow of humid outdoor air and indirect cooling caused by the air-conditioning system of a surrounding room. We analyzed the simulated temperature and humidity for various cases in which each influencing factor was suppressed. The humidity was reduced when the exhaust fan for the surrounding rooms wa... April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: aerogel, Computational Fluid Dynamics, decay, insulation, temperature
Reducing building energy consumption is a significant challenge and is one of the most important research areas worldwide. Insulation will help to keep the building’s desired temperature by reducing the heat flow. Additionally, proper insulation can provide an extended period of comfort, leading to reduced building energy requirements. Encapsulated air is the major aspect of most thermal insulation materials. Low thermal conductivity is a good characteristic of thermal insulation materials. Aerogel has low thermal conductivity, so it is suitable for glazing and insulation purposes. This research paper investigates the effectiveness of aerogel as an insulation material in buildings by incorporating a translucent aerogel-glazing system in the window and aerogel insulation in the wall of a building. Experimental investigation of a 10 mm thick aerogel blanket surrounded box was conducted to assess its performance. Additionally, a CFD simulation was conducted, and the results of temperature... April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Archimedes screw, Computational Fluid Dynamics, flow field, hydro, turbine
The Archimedes screw turbine (AST) is the most sustainable mini-hydropower extraction method that offers number of economic, social, and environmental advantages. Nowadays, many researchers are interested in AST development as it is considered a new technology. Currently, a lot of researchers are conducting experimental testing of the screws, comparing their reliability with computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analyses. Almost all of them are lab-scale testing models that claiming an average 80% efficiency for low pitch angles. In the case of a real site with a small inclination angle, the length of the screw is large enough to cause severe problems, specially related to bending of the screw. Therefore, this research was conducted to analyze the CFD flow field in a real site-scale AST with the maximum possible inclination of 45 degrees. In addition, the design was done without the upper and lower reservoir as it was conceived as a run-of-river flow system. The simulated real scale AST re... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: artificial neural networks (ANNs), commodity options, crude oil price risk, effectiveness analysis, support decision-making
Despite the growing share of renewable energy sources, most of the world energy supply is still based on hydrocarbons and the vast majority of world transport is fuelled by oil products. Thus, the profitability of many companies may depend on the effective management of oil price risk. In this article, we analysed the effectiveness of artificial neural networks in hedging against the risk of WTI crude oil prices increase. This was reformulated from a regressive problem to a classification problem. The effectiveness of our approach, using artificial neural networks to classify observations, was verified for over ten years of WTI futures quotes, starting from 2009. The data analysis presented in this paper confirmed that the buyer of a call option was more often likely to incur a loss as a result of its purchase than make a profit after the final payoff from the call option. The results of the conducted research confirm that neural networks can be an effective form of protection against... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ARIMA model, Bayesian model, performance matrix, power system dynamics, time series model
Withthe massive penetration of electronic power converter (EPC)-based technologies, numerous issues are being noticed in the modern power system that may directly affect system dynamics and operational security. The estimation of system performance parameters is especially important for transmission system operators (TSOs) in order to operate a power system securely. This paper presents a Bayesian model to forecast short-term kinetic energy time series data for a power system, which can thus help TSOs to operate a respective power system securely. A Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method used as a No-U-Turn sampler and Stan’s limited-memory Broyden−Fletcher−Goldfarb−Shanno (LM-BFGS) algorithm is used as the optimization method here. The concept of decomposable time series modeling is adopted to analyze the seasonal characteristics of datasets, and numerous performance measurement matrices are used for model validation. Besides, an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: artificial neural network, recurrent neural network, sorption thermal energy storage, zeolite
Sorption thermal heat storage is a promising solution to improve the development of renewable energies and to promote a rational use of energy both for industry and households. These systems store thermal energy through physico-chemical sorption/desorption reactions that are also termed hydration/dehydration. Their introduction to the market requires to assess their energy performances, usually analysed by numerical simulation of the overall system. To address this, physical models are commonly developed and used. However, simulation based on such models are time-consuming which does not allow their use for yearly simulations. Artificial neural network (ANN)-based models, which are known for their computational efficiency, may overcome this issue. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to investigate the use of an ANN model to simulate a sorption heat storage system, instead of using a physical model. Subject: Optimization
Keywords: arbitrage, Batteries, day-ahead market, Energy Storage, particle swarm optimisation, power system management, supply and demand
Energy storage systems are expected to play a fundamental part in the integration of increasing renewable energy sources into the electric system. They are already used in power plants for different purposes, such as absorbing the effect of intermittent energy sources or providing ancillary services. For this reason, it is imperative to research managing and sizing methods that make power plants with storage viable and profitable projects. In this paper, a managing method is presented, where particle swarm optimisation is used to reach maximum profits. This method is compared to expert systems, proving that the former achieves better results, while respecting similar rules. The paper further presents a sizing method which uses the previous one to make the power plant as profitable as possible. Finally, both methods are tested through simulations to show their potential.
