A Systematic Review of HPM Energy Absorbers for Building Applications
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: building, HPM, materials, protection, review
A modern weapon, high power microwave (HPM) pulses, can have a profound effect on the quality of functioning of society as the use of this weapon can result in damage to or destruction of electronic equipment and computer and telecommunications systems, both military and civilian. Protection against the energy of HPM pulses can be achieved in two basic ways: by using radiation-absorbent materials (RAM) or artificial electromagnetic (EM) structures. If the object to be protected is a building, protection based on RAM is used. Hence, this literature review focuses on the possibilities of using HPM energy absorbers in building products and structures. Attention is concentrated on four basic types of elements: claddings, concrete and mortar, small-sized elements (bricks, hollow masonry units), and paint coatings. In each of the categories, examples of HPM radiation absorbers having a high potential to be combined with basic construction materials are given on the basis of the literature on... [more]

Challenges in All-DC Offshore Wind Power Plants
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DC collection system, DC/DC converter, offshore wind power plant
As the size and distance from shore of new offshore wind power plants (OWPPs) increase, connection to shore using high-voltage (HV) direct-current (DC) technology becomes more cost-effective. Currently, every offshore wind power plant has a collection system based on medium-voltage alternating-current technology. Such systems rely on heavy and bulky low-frequency (i.e., 50 or 60 Hz) transformers: a drawback offshore, where equipment weight and space are restricted. Consequently, there is growing interest in medium-voltage direct-current collection systems, in which low-frequency transformers are replaced with DC/DC converters equipped with lighter and smaller medium-frequency transformers. However, the deployment of all-DC OWPPs still faces several challenges. Based on a very comprehensive and critical literature review, three of them are identified and discussed in this paper. The first challenge is the technological gap at component level. In this work, the DC/DC converter topologies... [more]

Fuel Reactor CFD Multiscale Modelling in Syngas-Based Chemical Looping Combustion with Ilmenite
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 3D particle, carbon capture and storage, chemical looping combustion, Computational Fluid Dynamics, ilmenite oxygen carrier, Multiscale Modelling, reaction chamber, Syngas
As global power generation is currently relying on fossil fuel-based power plants, more anthropogenic CO2 is being released into the atmosphere. During the transition period to alternative energy sources, carbon capture and storage seems to be a promising solution. Chemical-looping combustion (CLC) is an energy conversion technology designed for combustion of fossil fuel with advantageous carbon capture capabilities. In this work, a 1D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) multiscale model was developed to study the reduction step in a syngas-based CLC system and was validated using literature data (R=0.99). In order to investigate mass transfer effects, flow rate and particle dimension studies were carried out. Sharper mass transfer rates were seen at lower flow rates and smaller granule sizes due to suppression of diffusion limitations. In addition, a 3D CFD particle model was developed to investigate in depth the reduction within an ilmenite particle, with focus on heat transfer effect... [more]

The Role of Discounting in Energy Policy Investments
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: cost-benefit analysis, dual discounting, energy policy investments, energy transition index, social discount rate
For informing future energy policy decisions, it is essential to choose the correct social discount rate (SDR) for ex-ante economic evaluations. Generally, costs and benefits—both economic and environmental—are weighted through a single constant discount rate. This leads to excessive discounting of the present value of cash flows progressively more distant over time. Evaluating energy projects through constant discount rates would mean underestimating their environmental externalities. This study intends to characterize environmental−economic discounting models calibrated for energy investments, distinguishing between intra- and inter-generational projects. In both cases, the idea is to use two discounting rates: an economic rate to assess financial components and an ecological rate to weight environmental effects. For intra-generational projects, the dual discount rates are assumed to be constant over time. For inter-generational projects, the model is time-declining to give greater w... [more]

Renovating on Unequal Premises: A Normative Framework for a Just Renovation Wave in Swedish Multifamily Housing
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: affordable housing, energy justice, energy transition, framework for just energy transitioning, Renovation Wave, social justice
While the energy transition of the EU housing stock is now being intensified with the launch of the Renovation Wave, economic inequalities are increasing in many OECD countries, which has effects on housing-related inequalities and the demand of affordable housing. The Renovation Wave is thus an opportunity to improve housing quality for low-income households, but also entails risks for increased rents. In Sweden, the standard of housing is relatively high and energy poverty in multifamily housing is rare, meaning that there are limited social benefits to be achieved from extensive energy retrofitting; moreover, Sweden lacks a social housing sector, which limits protection of the worst-off residents. This paper thus explores whether the limited social benefits of the Renovation Wave weigh up against the risks that it entails for the worst-off in the Swedish context. This is done within a normative framework for just energy transitioning that is developed within the context of the Renov... [more]

Finite Control Set—Model Predictive Control with Non-Spread Spectrum and Reduced Switching Frequency Applied to Multi-Cell Rectifiers
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: AFE rectifiers, predictive control, total harmonic distortion minimization
Multi-cell converters are widely used in medium-voltage AC drives. This equipment is based on power cells that operate with low-voltage-rating semiconductors and require an input multipulse transformer. This transformer cancels the low-frequency current harmonics generated by the three-phase diode-based rectifier. Unfortunately, this transformer is bulky, heavy, expensive, and does not extend the existing power cell (three-phase rectifier—Direct Current (DC) voltage-link—single-phase inverter) to the transformer. In this study, a harmonic cancelation method based on finite control set-model predictive control (FCS−MPC), extending the power cell’s modularity to the input transformer. On the other hand, it considers treating the two disadvantages of the FCS−MPC: High switching frequency and spread spectrum. The details were developed in theory and practice to obtain satisfactory experimental results.

Medical Peat Waste Upcycling to Carbonized Solid Fuel in the Torrefaction Process
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: circular economy, energy balance, fuel properties, kinetics lifetime prediction, mass balance, peloids, torrefied biomass, waste to carbon, waste to energy
Peat is the main type of peloid used in Polish cosmetic/healing spa facilities. Depending on treatment and origin, peat waste can be contaminated microbiologically, and as a result, it must be incinerated in medical waste incineration plants without energy recovery (local law). Such a situation leads to peat waste management costs increase. Therefore, in this work, we checked the possibility of peat waste upcycling to carbonized solid fuel (CSF) using torrefaction. Torrefaction is a thermal treatment process that removes microbiological contamination and improves the fuel properties of peat waste. In this work, the torrefaction conditions (temperature and time) on CSF quality were tested. Parallelly, peat decomposition kinetics using TGA and torrefaction kinetics with lifetime prediction using macro-TGA were determined. Furthermore, torrefaction theoretical mass and energy balance were determined. The results were compared with reference material (wood), and as a result, obtained data... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: clustering, Energy Efficiency, IoT, LEED building, smart building, time series, unsupervised learning
The climate of Houston, classified as a humid subtropical climate with tropical influences, makes the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems the largest electricity consumers in buildings. HVAC systems in commercial buildings are usually operated by a centralized control system and/or an energy management system based on a fixed schedule and scheduled control of a zone setpoint, which is not appropriate for many buildings with changing occupancy rates. Lately, as part of energy efficiency analysis, attention has focused on collecting and analyzing smart meters and building-related data, as well as applying supervised learning techniques, to propose new strategies to operate HVAC systems and reduce energy consumption. On the other hand, unsupervised learning techniques have been used to study the consumption information and profile characterization of different buildings after cluster analysis is performed. March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Information Management
Keywords: erosion, inclined plane test, partial discharge, polymer insulator, silicone rubber, time-frequency map
This paper investigates partial discharge (PD) characteristics that lead to the erosion of silicone rubber (SR) polymer under AC stress and DC stress of both polarities. The experiments are performed on high temperature vulcanized (HTV) SR material samples. The inclined plane test apparatus, constructed in accordance with IEC 60587 requirements, is employed to produce the surface partial discharges and the resulting accelerated aging of the specimens. Two commercial instruments are used to obtain the PD data. A concurrent analysis of visual observations of discharge and PD data is performed to classify discharges based on the severity of material degradation that each type causes. Three types of PD are identified and characterized using diagrams of charge magnitude versus time and a signal processing technique called time-frequency mapping. Individual pulse waveshapes of each type of discharge are also analyzed. PD pulse waveforms are analyzed according to their amplitude, energy, puls... [more]

An Improved Super-Twisting High-Order Sliding Mode Observer for Sensorless Control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: permanent magnet synchronous motor, sensorless control, super-twisting sliding mode observer
This article presents an improved super-twisting high-order sliding mode observer for permanent magnet synchronous motors to achieve high-performance sensorless control. The proposed observer is able to simultaneously estimate rotor position and speed, as well as track parameter disturbances online. Then, according to the back-EMF model, the sensorless observer is further constructed to improve the estimation effect. The estimated rotor position and speed are used to replace the actual values detected by the sensor, and the estimated parameter disturbances are considered as feedback values to compensate the command voltage. In this way, not only is the estimation accuracy improved, but the robustness against uncertainties is also enhanced. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed observer can effectively track the rotor position and speed and obtain good dynamic and steady-state performance.

Design and Modelling of 3D Bionic Cathode Flow Field for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bionic design, flow field, mass transfer, numerical modelling, proton exchange membrane fuel cell
Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have been utilized as a promising power source for new energy vehicles. Their performances are greatly affected by the structural design of the flow field in the bipolar plate. In this paper, we present a novel three-dimensional (3D) bionic cathode flow field, inspired by the small intestinal villi. The structural design and working principle of the 3D bionic flow field units are first described. A 3D numerical model is developed to study the mass transfer and distribution of the reactants and products, as well as the polarization performances of the PEMFC with the 3D bionic cathode flow field. The simulation results indicate that the proposed 3D bionic flow field can significantly improve the reaction gas supply from the flow field to porous electrodes, and thus would be beneficial for the removal of liquid water in the cathode. The mass transfer of gas in the PEMFC can be enhanced due to the increasing contact areas between the gas diffusi... [more]

Nonlinear Causality between Crude Oil Prices and Exchange Rates: Evidence and Forecasting
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: crude oil prices, exchange rates, forecasting, Machine Learning, nonlinear causality, support vector regression
The relationships between crude oil prices and exchange rates have always been of interest to academics and policy analysts. There are theoretical transmission channels that justify such links; however, the empirical evidence is not clear. Most of the studies on causal relationships in this area have been restricted to a linear framework, which can omit important properties of the investigated dependencies that could be exploited for forecasting purposes. Based on the nonlinear Granger causality tests, we found strong bidirectional causal relations between crude oil prices and two currency pairs: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and weaker between crude oil prices and JPY/USD. We showed that the significance of these relations has changed in recent years. We also made an attempt to find an effective strategy to forecast crude oil prices using the investigated exchange rates as regressors and vice versa. To this aim, we applied Support Vector Regression (SVR)—the machine learning method of time series... [more]

Adaptive Impedance-Conditioned Phase-Locked Loop for the VSC Converter Connected to Weak Grid
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: phase-locked loop (PLL), vector current control, VSC-HVDC, weak grid
In this paper, an adaptive version of the impedance-conditioned phase-locked loop (IC-PLL), namely the adaptive IC-PLL (AIC-PLL), is proposed. The IC-PLL has recently been proposed to address the issue of synchronisation with a weak AC grid by supplementing the conventional synchronous reference frame phase-locked loop (SRF-PLL) with an additional virtual impedance term. The resulting IC-PLL aims to synchronise the converter to a remote and stronger point in the grid, hence increasing the upper bound on the achievable power transfer achieved by the VSC converter connected to the weak grid. However, the issue of the variable grid strength imposes another challenge in the operation of the IC-PLL. This is because the IC-PLL requires impedance estimation methods to estimate the value of the virtual impedance part. In AIC-PLL, the virtual impedance part is estimated by appending another dynamic loop in the exciting IC-PLL. In this method, an additional closed loop is involved so that the va... [more]

Energy Curtailment Scheduling MILP Formulation for an Islanded Microgrid with High Penetration of Renewable Energy
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: curtailment cost gradation, islanded microgrid, mixed-integer linear programming, optimal scheduling
The efficiency of photovoltaic (PV) cells has improved significantly in the last decade, making PV generation a common feature of the sustainable microgrid. As the PV-powered microgrid reaches high penetrations of intermittent PV power, optimum scheduling of over-production is necessary to minimize energy curtailment. Failure to include an accurate assessment of curtailed energy costs in the scheduling process increases wasted energy. Moreover, applying an objective function without considering the cost coefficients results in an inefficient concentration of curtailed power in a specific time interval. In this study, we provide an optimization method for scheduling the microgrid assets to evenly distribute curtailment over the entire daily period of PV generation. Each of the curtailment intervals established in our optimization model features the application of different cost coefficients. In the final step, curtailment costs are added to the objective function. The proposed cost mini... [more]
