Estimation of the Influence of Compressed Hydrogen on the Mechanical Properties of Pipeline Steels
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: compressed hydrogen, hydrogen embrittlement, mechanical properties, pipeline steels
Consideration of the possibility of transporting compressed hydrogen through existing gas pipelines leads to the need to study the regularities of the effect of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of steels in relation to the conditions of their operation in pipelines (operating pressure range, stress state of the pipe metal, etc.). This article provides an overview of the types of influence of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of steels, including those used for the manufacture of pipelines. The effect of elastic and plastic deformations on the intensity of hydrogen saturation of steels and changes in their strength and plastic deformations is analyzed. An assessment of the potential losses of transported hydrogen through the pipeline wall as a result of diffusion has been made. The main issues that need to be solved for the development of a scientifically grounded conclusion on the possibility of using existing gas pipelines for the transportation of compressed hydrogen are out... Efficient and Stable Perovskite Large Area Cells by Low-Cost Fluorene-Xantene-Based Hole Transporting Layer
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: coating process, hole transporting layer, hole transporting material, large area cell, low cost, perovskite solar cell, stability
Among the new generation photovoltaics, perovskite solar cell (PSC) technology reached top efficiencies in a few years. Currently, the main objective to further develop PSCs is related to the fabrication of stable devices with cost-effective materials and reliable fabrication processes to achieve a possible industrialization pathway. In the n-i-p device configuration, the hole transporting material (HTM) used most is the highly doped organic spiro-fluorene-based material (Spiro-OMeTAD). In addition to the high cost related to its complex synthesis, this material has different issues such as poor photo, thermal and moisture stability. Here, we test on small and large area PSCs a commercially available HTM (X55, Dyenamo) with a new core made by low-cost fluorene−xantene units. The one-pot synthesis of this compound reduces 30 times its cost with respect to Spiro-OMeTAD. The optoelectronic performances and properties are characterized through JV measurement, IPCE (incident photon to curre... [more]

Optimal Maintenance Policy for Offshore Wind Systems
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: failure rate, fuzzy multi-objective programming, maintenance threshold, offshore wind system, optimal maintenance policy
Employing maintenance threshold plays a critical step in determining an optimal maintenance policy for an offshore wind system to reduce maintenance costs while increasing system reliability. Considering the limited works on this topic, we propose a two-stage procedure to determine the optimal maintenance thresholds for multiple components of an offshore wind power system in order to minimize maintenance costs while achieving the highest possible system reliability. First, using genetic algorithms, a dynamic strategy is developed to determine the maintenance thresholds of individual components where the cost of maintenance and the rate of failure are critical. Then, fuzzy multi-objective programming is applied to find the system’s optimal maintenance threshold considering all components. A variety of factors including weather conditions, system reliability, power generation losses, and electricity market price are carefully considered to enhance the system’s reliability and reduce the... Development of a Common Framework for Analysing Public Transport Smart Card Data
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: geodatabase, open science, public transport, smart card data
The data generated in public transport systems have proven to be of great importance in improving knowledge of public transport systems, being very valuable in promoting the sustainability of public transport through rational management. However, the analysis of this data involves numerous tasks, so that when the value of analysing the data is finally verified, the effort has already been very great. The management and analysis of the collected data face some difficulties. This is the case of the data collected by the current automated fare collection systems. These systems do not follow any open standards and are not usually designed with a multipurpose nature, so they do not facilitate the data analysis workflow (i.e., acquisition, storage, quality control, integration and quantitative analysis). Intending to reduce this workload, we propose a conceptual framework for analysing data from automated fare collection systems in mobility studies. The main components of this framework are... [more]

Research on Machining Workshop Batch Scheduling Incorporating the Completion Time and Non-Processing Energy Consumption Considering Product Structure
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: multi-level structure, multi-objective gray wolf optimizer (MOGWO), non-production energy consumption (NPEC), sub-batch priority
Energy-saving scheduling is a well-known issue in the manufacturing system. The flexibility of the workshop increases the difficulty of scheduling. In the workshop schedule, considering the collaborative optimization of multi-level structure product production and energy consumption has certain practical significance. The process sequence of parts and components should be consistent with the assembly sequence. Additionally, the non-production energy consumption (NPEC) (such as the energy consumption of workpiece handling, equipment standby, and workpiece conversion) generated by the auxiliary machining operations, which make up the majority of the total energy consumption, should not be ignored. A sub-batch priority is set according to the upper and lower coupling relationship in the product structure. A bi-objective batch scheduling model that minimizes the total energy consumption and the total completion time is developed, and the multi-objective gray wolf optimizer (MOGWO) is emplo... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: carbon neutralization, demand response, Frank-Copula-GlueCVaR, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, wind-photovoltaic
Improving the efficiency of renewable energy and electricity utilization is an urgent problem for China under the objectives of carbon peaking and carbon neutralization. This paper proposes an optimization scheduling method of electric vehicles (EV) combined with wind and photovoltaic power based on the Frank-Copula-GlueCVaR. First, a joint output model based on copula theory was built to describe the correlation between wind and photovoltaic power output. Second, the Frank-Copula-GlueCVaR index was introduced in a novel way. Operators can now predetermine the future wind-photovoltaic joint output range based on this index and according to their risk preferences. Third, an optimal scheduling model aimed at reducing the group charging cost of EVs was proposed, thereby encouraging EV owners to participate in the demand response. Fourth, this paper: proposes the application of a Variant Roth−Serve algorithm; regards the EV group as a multi-intelligent group; and finds the Pareto optimal s... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: emulsion, gel, interfacial engineering, porous material, solar evaporator
Solar vapor generation is emerging as one of the most important sustainable techniques for harvesting clean water using abundant and green solar energy. The rational design of solar evaporators to realize high solar evaporation performances has become a great challenge. Here, a porous solar evaporator with integrative optimization of photothermal convention, water transport and thermal management is developed using attractive Pickering emulsions gels (APEG) as templated and followed by interfacial engineering on a molecular scale. The APEG-templated porous evaporators (APEG-TPEs) are intrinsically thermal insulation materials with a thermal conductivity = 0.039 W·m−1·K−1. After hydrolysis, t-butyl groups on the inner-surface are transformed to carboxylic acid groups, making the inner-surface hydrophilic and facilitating water transport through the inter-connected pores. Direct Reduction in Greenhouse Gases by Continuous Dry (CO2) Reforming of Methane over Ni-Containing SHS Catalysts
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: biogas, Hydrogen, reforming, synthesis gas
The world of energy is on the cusp of profound transformation. Hydrogen or hydrogen-containing fuel mixtures in the form of synthesis gas, as carriers of clean energy, will be in the short term among the most efficient solutions to pressing environmental problems, reducing the amount of greenhouse gases as well as pollution of cities and dependence on oil-based fuels. Carbon dioxide conversion of methane is the most promising method for the production of synthesis gas due to the simultaneous consumption of two greenhouse gases and, accordingly, a successful solution to environmental problems. Ni/Mn-based catalysts have been prepared by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) for this process. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and nitrogen porosimetry. The effects of the catalysts’ composition on activity, selectivity, and product yield were investigated. The influence of the content of Ni, Mn on the behavior of catalysts has be... [more]

Development of a Low-Cost Data Acquisition System for Very Short-Term Photovoltaic Power Forecasting
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: computer vision, energy quality, forecasting, metrology, multilayer perceptron, neural networks, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, short-term forecasting, sky-camera, solar energy
The rising adoption of renewable energy sources means we must turn our eyes to limitations in traditional energy systems. Intermittency, if left unaddressed, may lead to several power-quality and energy-efficiency issues. The objective of this work is to develop a working tool to support photovoltaic energy forecast models for real-time operation applications. The current paradigm of intra-hour solar-power forecasting is to use image-based approaches to predict the state of cloud composition for short time horizons. Since the objective of intra-minute forecasting is to address high-frequency intermittency, data must provide information on and surrounding these events. For that purpose, acquisition by exception was chosen as the guiding principle. The system performs power measurements at 1 Hz frequency, and whenever it detects variations over a certain threshold, it saves the data 10 s before and 4 s after the detection point. Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: earthing system, ground resistance, lightning, lightning current, probability distribution, wind turbine generators
Currently, lightning phenomenon, mechanisms, and impacts on lives and infrastructures have been satisfactorily decoded and studied. Sound knowledge of lightning parameters is available in international literature. Yet, there are few studies referring to lightning statistics such as the number of flashes over an area, current amplitude distribution, etc., except for official documentation from national weather services, perhaps because of the stochastic nature of lightning. This work presents full recorded data for lightning flashes over wind farms distributed at the Hellenic territory. The data come from real time measurements at wind farm stations from 2011 to 2020 and concern number of CG flashes and lightning current amplitude. They are statistically processed and analyzed and contain useful information regarding the lightning characteristics of various geographic regions all over the country. March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electric drive, harmonic distortion coefficient, predictive control algorithms, pulsation coefficient of electromagnetic moment, spectral analysis of current, technical state boundaries
The efficiency issue of energy systems in the oil and gas industry is a crucial factor nowadays. Energy share in the production costs of oil and gas can reach 50%. Among the most important energy equipment are the electric drives of the pumps, compressors, auxiliary units, etc. The paper considered the lifecycle of the electric drives used at oil and gas fields and evaluated their efficiency parameters during periods of operational wear or malfunctioning. At the same time, the lifecycle of the energy equipment was seen as its technical state during operation. Based on the spectral analysis of the current using the finite Fourier transform (FFT), the main frequency components were identified that characterize the type and level of malfunction, taking into account defined efficiency indicators of the electric drive. A technique for assessing the technical state of an electric drive was proposed based on the normalized levels of the amplitudes of the frequency components. Predictive manag... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: deep reinforcement learning, multi-agent DDQN, transmission network expansion planning (TNEP), uncertainty, wind power
This paper presents a multi-agent Double Deep Q Network (DDQN) based on deep reinforcement learning for solving the transmission network expansion planning (TNEP) of a high-penetration renewable energy source (RES) system considering uncertainty. First, a K-means algorithm that enhances the extraction quality of variable wind and load power uncertain characteristics is proposed. Photovoltaic Energy Conversion Systems with Sliding Mode Control
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DC–DC converter, sliding mode control, solar energy systems
A new sliding-mode-control-based power conversion scheme is proposed for photovoltaic energy conversion systems. The perturbation and observation (P&O) maximum power-point tracking (MPPT) approach is adopted for optimizing the power generation capabilities from solar panels. Due to the inherent nonlinear dynamics of power converters, we need to adopt a nonlinear control approach to optimize the energy conversion efficiency and tolerate the fluctuations and changes of load and sunlight irradiance. In this manuscript, novel first-and higher-order sliding mode control approaches are proposed, aiming to provide a systematic approach for the robust and optimal control of solar energy conversion, which guarantees Lyapunov stability and consistent performance in the face of external perturbations and disturbances. Moreover, to eliminate the chattering phenomenon inherent in the first-order approach, super-twisting second-order sliding mode control is developed for the buck-boost converter. Fu... [more]

Proposal, Robustness Analysis and Equivalent Implementation of Optimization Method for Row-by-Row Fin Distribution in Multi-Row Frosting Evaporator
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: fin distribution, finned tube evaporator, frost, optimization method
The evaporator in a frost-free refrigerator typically has more tube rows, but frost deposition reduces along the airflow direction. Correspondingly, the evaporator fin distribution is thinner in the upstream rows but denser downstream, and a good match between frost and fin distribution is achieved to recover evaporator capacity loss. However, quantitative design principles of non-uniform fin distribution are lacking. A quasi-static frosting evaporator model is established and experimentally verified considering a three-dimensional (3D) evaporator, 1D frost growth and 1D non-uniform fin distribution. An optimization method for row-by-row fin distribution of a multi-row frosting evaporator is proposed based on the air pressure drop’s increase rate. When the increase rate in the air pressure drop of each row is almost equal, the smallest overall evaporator pressure drop is obtained, leading to the highest air flowrate and the greatest evaporator capacity. By applying the method, the air... [more]

Corporate Social Responsibility and Financial Performance among Energy Sector Companies
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: CSR strategy, energy sector, financial performance
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is one of the main drivers of corporate reputation. Many studies show that CSR can positively affect financial performance (FP) and vice versa. However, the relationship between FP and CSR depends on the type of industry in which the company operates, and there is little research regarding the energy sector in this area. The basis of empirical research in this study is slack resource theory which argues that financial performance is the cause of corporate social performance. This paper aims to analyze if financial performance affects corporate social responsibility adoption in energy sector companies. In order to achieve this goal, the study specifically examines the relationship between selected financial performance indicators and CSR adoption. Analyzing an international sample of 219 companies from thirty-two countries for 2020, we observed the statistically significant relations between financial performance and the implementing of the CSR stra... Forecasting of Market Clearing Volume Using Wavelet Packet-Based Neural Networks with Tracking Signals
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: forecasting, market clearing volume, neural network, tracking signals, wavelet packets
In order to analyze the nature of electrical demand series in deregulated electricity markets, various forecasting tools have been used. All these forecasting models have been developed to improve the accuracy of the reliability of the model. Therefore, a Wavelet Packet Decomposition (WPD) was implemented to decompose the demand series into subseries. Each subseries has been forecasted individually with the help of the features of that series, and features were chosen on the basis of mutual correlation among all-time lags using an Auto Correlation Function (ACF). Thus, in this context, a new hybrid WPD-based Linear Neural Network with Tapped Delay (LNNTD) model, with a cyclic one-month moving window for a one-year market clearing volume (MCV) forecasting has been proposed. The proposed model has been effectively implemented in two years (2015−2016) and unconstrained MCV data collected from the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) for 12 grid regions of India. Economic Implications of Agricultural Land Conversion to Solar Power Production
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: agricultural land, biodiversity, greenhouse gas emissions, landscape, profit maximization, renewable energy production, social welfare
Meeting greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets will require a significant increase in electricity production from sustainable and renewable sources such as solar energy. Farmers have recognized this need as a chance to increase the profitability of their farms by allocating farmland to solar power production. However, the shift from agriculture to power production has many tradeoffs, arising primarily from alternative land uses and other means of production. This paper models the farmers’ decision as a constrained profit maximization problem, subject to the amount of land owned by the farmers, who have to allocate it between agriculture and solar power fields, while considering factors affecting production costs. The farmers’ problem is nested in the social welfare maximization problem, which includes additional factors such as ecological and aesthetical values of the competing land uses. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, Biofuels, castor seed oil, catalyst, CI engine, pyrolysis, transesterification
Energy consumption is on the rise due to rapid technological progress and a higher standard of living. The use of alternative energy resources is essential to meet the rising energy demand and mitigate the carbon emissions caused due to use of fossil-based fuels. Biodiesel produced from non-edible oils such as castor seed oil (CO) can be used in diesel engines to replace fossil diesel. However, the quality and yields for CO biodiesel is low due to the presence of ricinolic acid C18:1OH (79%). In this study, two-stage conversion techniques were used to improve the yields and properties of CO biodiesel. The catalyst CaCu(OCH3)2 was prepared from waste eggshell and synthesized with copper oxide in the presence of methanol. The castor oil was subjected to pyrolysis at 450−500 °C and then transesterified in the presence of modified catalyst.
