Optimal Modulation of Regenerative Braking in Through-The-Road Hybridized Vehicles
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Optimization, parallel hybrid vehicle, regenerative braking, vehicle hybridization
Regenerative braking can significantly improve the energy efficiency of hybrid and electric vehicles, and many studies have been carried out in order to improve and optimize the energy recovery of the braking energy. In the paper, the optimization of regenerative braking by means of braking force modulation is analysed, with specific application to the case of cars converted into Through-the-road (TTR) hybrid vehicles, and an optimal modulation strategy is also proposed. Car hybridization is an emerging topic since it may be a feasible, low-cost, intermediate step toward the green transition of the transport system with a potential positive impact in third-world countries. In this case, the presence of two in-wheel-motors installed on the rear axle and of the original mechanical braking system mounted on the vehicle can result in limited braking energy recovery in the absence of proper braking management strategies. A vehicle longitudinal model has been integrated with an algorithm of... [more]

Separation of 3He Isotope from Liquid Helium with the Use of Entropy Filter Composed of Carbon Nanotubes
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: 3He isotope, carbon nanotubes, entropy filter, isotope separation, quantum filtration
The 3He isotope finds applications in many areas of science and industry, the most important of which are cryogenics, where 3He allows for achieving millikelvins in dilution refrigerators, and public security with 3He detectors of radioactive materials at airports and important buildings. 3He is also used in medicine for lung tomography. One of the most extraordinary future applications is the use of 3He in fusion reactors for clean energy. 3He is currently very expensive, with prices reaching USD 2750 for 1 liter of gas in normal conditions; thus, more effort is put into finding economically viable methods to acquire this isotope. The article shows research results of acquiring the 3He isotope from liquid helium by a quantum separation method with the use of entropy filters based on new carbon nanomaterials: purified multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and purified multiwall carbon nanotubes decorated with ZrO2 nanoparticles. MWCNTs were bundled and applied in the form of pressed tabl... [more]

Design of a Pendulum Prototype for Dynamic Testing of Material Removal Using Picks
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: dynamic cutting, mechanical removal, optimum cutting energy, pendulum, picks, specific energy
The need for large and fast excavations, together with noise and vibration limitations, means that mechanical removal is increasingly used rather than blasting. In mechanical removal, the cutting tools hit the rock and penetrate it, and then move in the direction of cutting, dragging and detaching a portion of rock called chip. Most research on mechanical removal approaches it as a static process without taking into account the speed at which the cutting element impacts the rock. This work presents the design of a pendulum equipment capable of simulating the impact of a cutting element, specifically a pick, against a rock, reproducing the removal in a similar way to how it is carried out in real excavations. Cutting tests are carried out with concrete samples with a cement/sand ratio of 1:1 and 3:1, the volume of material that is removed is calculated using a 3D scanner and images of the tests are collected with a high-speed video camera to facilitate the interpretation of the results.... Households’ Electrical Energy Conservation and Management: An Ecological Break-Through, or the Same Old Consumption-Growth Path?
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: attachment to consumption, energy usage flexibility, motivations, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, smart grid solutions, social networks
We examine the motivations behind the electrical energy conservation and smart management at households to verify whether we are observing an ecological breakthrough, or a mere continuation of the well-trodden consumption-growth path. We conducted an online survey in France, Spain, Italy, and Denmark (n = 3200) on the subject of electricity use and generation. We utilized a generalized structural equation model to simultaneously test the direct reasons behind different energy-use behaviors and intentions, as well as their motivating factors. Measures to conserve electrical energy and install renewable energy equipment are not solely driven by ecological concerns; a crucial role is played by openness to new technologies, which correlates with high financial status. Saving electrical energy and new-tech eagerness go hand-in-hand with attachment to consumption and comfort. Social environment is relevant, as it allows users to converse about electricity saving with friends, and to observe... [more]

Control of WPT Transmitter Coils for Power Distribution to Two Receiver Coils without Feedback
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: magnetic resonance, max-min problem, Optimization, power distribution, wireless power transfer
This paper proposes the algorithm to control the current ratio of the transmitting (Tx) coils for proper power distribution to the two receiving (Rx) coils in wireless power transfer (WPT) system. The proposed algorithm assumes that each Rx coil appears at different times to consider the situation where multiple users request power transmission as practically as possible. That is, suppose the second Rx coil enters the charging space later than the first Rx coil. When each coil enters the charging space, only the Tx coil is used to obtain the value required for calculation. Using the obtained result, the optimized Tx coil current is calculated by the proposed algorithm and proper power distribution to both Rx coils is achieved. Three Tx coils and two Rx coils are constructed using the ANSYS MAXWELL simulation tool. As a result of applying the proposed algorithm, it was confirmed that a similar level of power was transmitted between 40∼60%, respectively. The sum of the power transmitted... [more]

Subject: Process Monitoring
Keywords: fault tree analysis, fuzzy logic, passive buildings, risk management
Nowadays, we can observe a growing interest in passive buildings due to global climate change, environmental concerns, and growing energy costs. However, developing a passive building is associated with meeting many Passive House requirements, which results in their increased complexity as well as many challenges and risks which could threaten the successful completion of the project. Risk management is a key tool enabling meeting today’s challenging passive house project’s demands connected with quality, costs, deadlines, and legal issues. In this paper, a new model of risk management dedicated for passive buildings based is proposed, in which a novel Fuzzy Fault Tree integrated with risk response matrix was developed. We proposed 171 risk remediation strategies for all 16 recognized risks in passive buildings projects. We show how to apply the proposed model in practice on one passive building example. Influence of Selected Non-Ideal Aspects on Active and Reactive Power MRAS for Stator and Rotor Resistance Estimation
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: induction motor modeling, inverter nonlinearity, iron losses, MRAS, Numerical Methods
Mathematical models of induction motor (IM) used in direct field-oriented control (DFOC) strategies are characterized by parametrization resulting from the IM equivalent circuit and model-type selection. The parameter inaccuracy causes DFOC detuning, which deteriorates the drive performance. Therefore, many methods for parameter adaptation were developed in the literature. One class of algorithms, popular due to their simplicity, includes estimators based on the model reference adaptive system (MRAS). Their main disadvantage is the dependence on other machines’ parameters. However, although typically not considered in the respective literature, there are other aspects that impair the performance of the MRAS estimators. These include, but are not limited to, the nonlinear phenomenon of iron losses, the effect of necessary discretization of the algorithms and selection of the sampling time, and the influence of the supply inverter nonlinear behavior. Therefore, this paper aims to study t... [more]

Analysis of Selected Operating States of the Line Start Synchronous Reluctance Motor Using the Finite Element Method
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electromagnetic torque, finite element analysis, reluctance motor, three-dimensional field model
The article presents the results of work on an effective numerical study of selected transient states of a low-power electrical machine. The object of detailed research was a synchronized squirrel-cage induction motor. Its ability to work at a synchronous speed was enabled by obtaining reluctance torque, caused by an imposed asymmetry between the direct and quadrature reluctances of the rotor. The difference between the reluctances was achieved by changing the rotor geometry by milling additional deep grooves. The modifications of the rotor did not damage the continuity of the rotor cage. Imposed lots were arranged symmetrically around the rotor circumference. In order to study the performance of the modified motor, a parameterized, numerical model of the machine was developed to evaluate the impact of the geometry of the slots. The developed three dimensional (3D) model of the electromagnetic phenomena in the studied magnetic circuit employs the finite element method (FEM). The model... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: bibliometric study, clean energy system, decision approaches, uncertainty
This paper aims to provide a bibliometric review on the diverse decision approaches in uncertain contexts for clean energy system (CES) assessment. A total of 126 publications are analyzed. Previous reviews on CES have discussed several research questions on the decision methods and the applicability of evaluating CES, along with the factors associated with CESs. In the present study, we focus on the bibliometric aspect that attempts to address questions related to the prominence of authors, countries/regions that focus on the current theme, impact of journals, importance of articles in the research community, and so on. The window considered for the study is from 2018 to 2021, with the motive to extend the review process from the preceding works. A review model is presented to address the questions based on the literature evidence. The results infer that CESs are the most viable mode for sustainable development, and the use of decision approaches is apt for the assessment of CESs.

Kinetic and Thermodynamic Analysis of High-Pressure CO2 Capture Using Ethylenediamine: Experimental Study and Modeling
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide Capture, ethylenediamine, high-pressure system, kinetics, Modelling, thermodynamic analysis
One of the alternatives to reduce CO2 emissions from industrial sources (mainly the oil and gas industry) is CO2 capture. Absorption with chemical solvents (alkanolamines in aqueous solutions) is the most widely used conventional technology for CO2 capture. Despite the competitive advantages of chemical solvents, the technological challenge in improving the absorption process is to apply alternative solvents, reducing energy demand and increasing the CO2 captured per unit of solvent mass. This work presents an experimental study related to the kinetic and thermodynamic analysis of high-pressure CO2 capture using ethylenediamine (EDA) as a chemical solvent. EDA has two amine groups that can increase the CO2 capture capacity per unit of solvent. A non-stirred experimental setup was installed and commissioned for CO2 capture testing. Tests of the solubility of CO2 in water were carried out to validate the experimental setup. CO2 capture testing was accomplished using EDA in aqueous soluti... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: combustion, computational fluid dynamic (CFD), emission, multiple injection, numerical simulation, two-stroke engine
This paper presents research on the effects of the multiple injection strategies on the combustion and emission characteristics of a two-stroke heavy-duty marine engine at full load. The ANSYS FLUENT simulation software was used to conduct three-dimensional simulations of the combustion process and emission formations inside the engine cylinder in both single- and double-injection modes to analyze the in-cylinder pressure, temperature, and emission characteristics. The simulation results were then compared and showed good agreement with the measured values reported in the engine’s sea-trial technical reports. The simulation results showed reductions in the in-cylinder pressure and temperature peaks by 6.42% and 12.76%, while NO and soot emissions were reduced up to 24.16% and 68%, respectively, in the double-injection mode in comparison with the single-injection mode. However, the double-injection strategy increased the CO2 emission (7.58%) and ISFOC (23.55%) compared to the single-inj... [more]

Decarbonizing Local Mobility and Greenhouse Agriculture through Residential Building Energy Upgrades: A Case Study for Québec
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: building retrofits and rebuilds, building-integrated photovoltaics, decarbonization, densification, Energy Efficiency, food and energy security, greenhouse gas emissions, mobility and heating electrification
Electrification is an efficient way to decarbonize by replacing fossil fuels with low-emission power. In addition, energy efficiency measures can reduce consumption, making it easier to shift to a zero-carbon society. In Québec, upgrades to aging buildings that employ electric resistance heating offer a unique opportunity to free up large amounts of hydroelectricity that can serve to decarbonize heating in other buildings. However, another source of energy would be needed to electrify mobility because efficiency measures free up small amounts of electricity in summer compared to winter. This study reveals how building efficiency measures combined with solar electricity generation provide an energy profile that matches the requirements for decarbonizing both mobility and heating. The TRNSYS software was used to simulate the annual energy performance of an existing house and retrofitted/rebuilt low-energy houses equipped with a photovoltaic (PV) roof in Montreal, Québec, Canada (45.5° N)... Subject: Materials
Keywords: metal assisted etching, perovskite solar cell, photovoltaics, silicon microwires, silicon nanowires, silicon solar cell, silicon/perovskite tandem, tandem photovoltaics, tandem solar cell, TCS
The aim of the paper was to determine the morphology of the layers and the microstructure of the transition zone present in the proposed tandem solar structure. The bottom-silicon solar cell plays a double role: first as a highly porous non-reflecting material, and second as a scaffold for top-perovskite cell. In the presented solution, the use of a porous layer made of (e.g., TiO2) is excluded in favor of chemically etched wires on the silicon surface. The porous layer of silicon consists of nano- and microwires etched with metal assisted etching (MAE). The perovskite layer is introduced by a two-step chemical method into the spaces between the wires to fully fill them and intentionally form an additional capping layer at the same time. To examine the structure made in this way, advanced microscopic methods were used including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), also in high resolution.

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: convergence, finite element method, heat energy, mass transfer, numerical algorithm
This article models a system of partial differential equations (PDEs) for the thermal and solute characteristics under gradients (concentration and temperature) in the magnetohydrodynamic flow of Casson liquid in a Darcy porous medium. The modelled problems are highly non-linear with convective boundary conditions. These problems are solved numerically with a finite element approach under a tolerance of 10−8. A numerical algorithm (finite element approach) is provided and a numerical procedure is discussed. Convergence is also observed via 300 elements. Simulations are run to explore the dynamics of flow and the transport of heat and mass under parametric variation. To examine the impact of a temperature gradient on the transport of mass and the role of a concentration gradient on the transport of heat energy, simulations are recorded. Remarkable changes in temperature and concentration are noted when Dufour and Soret numbers are varied.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: data augmentation, diagnostics, electrical power equipment, Fault Detection, Machine Learning, small sample size
Machine-learning diagnostic systems are widely used to detect abnormal conditions in electrical equipment. Training robust and accurate diagnostic systems is challenging because only small databases of abnormal-condition data are available. However, the performance of the diagnostic systems depends on the quantity and quality of the data. The training database can be augmented utilizing data augmentation techniques that generate synthetic data to improve diagnostic performance. However, existing data augmentation techniques are generic methods that do not include additional information in the synthetic data. In this paper, we develop a model-based data augmentation technique integrating computer-implementable electromechanical models. Synthetic normal- and abnormal-condition data are generated with an electromechanical model and a stochastic parameter value sampling method. The model-based data augmentation is showcased to detect an abnormal condition of a distribution transformer. Fir... [more]

RANS CFD Analysis of Hump Formation Mechanism in Double-Suction Centrifugal Pump under Part Load Condition
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: double-suction centrifugal pump, flow separation, flow simulation, head hump, stall
The RANS (Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes equations) with CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation method is used to analyze the head hump formation mechanism in the double-suction centrifugal pump under a part load condition. The purpose is to establish a clear connection between the head hump and the microcosmic flow field structure, and reveal the influence mechanism between them. It is found that the diffuser stall causes a change in the impeller capacity for work, and this is the most critical reason for hump formation. The change in the hydraulic loss of volute is also a reason for hump, and it is analyzed using the energy balance equation. The hump formation mechanism has not been fully revealed so far. This paper found the most critical flow structure inducing hump and revealed its inducing mechanism, and greatly promoted the understanding of hump formation. Fundamentals of the Thermal Analysis of Complex Arrangements of Underground Heat Sources
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 3-dimensional analysis, ampacity calculations, cable rating, complex laying conditions, power cables, underground heat sources
This paper introduces a new analytical method for the 3-dimensional analysis of heat sources installed underground. Such sources include primarily electric power cables and steam pipes in urban areas. For complex arrangements of the heat sources, the heat transfer and cable rating calculations require the application of numerical methods, which call for high level of expertise and are generally difficult to use. The computational algorithm presented in this paper uses a point sources approach and is an extension of the work published by the authors based on line source modeling, with the goal of simplifying the numerical calculations. The proposed approach is applicable for all heat sources, which are directly buried in a uniform or a partially dried out soil. The method is illustrated by several numerical examples. These examples are used for comparison with the existing standard approach.

The efficiency of a photovoltaic (PV) panels drops significantly in dusty environments. The variation in temperature could have a substantial impact on PV panel cells, which could further lead to high deterioration and eventually permanent damage to the PV material in the presence of dust. To resolve this issue, in this work a novel hydrophobic silicon dioxide (SiO2)-based nanoparticle coating is proposed for the PV panel, to shrink the surface stress developed between the water and the coated facet. Two identical PV modules were installed to conduct comparable experimental tests simultaneously. The first module is coated by the SiO2 nanoparticles, and the second is uncoated and used as a reference.
