Bioconversion of Crude Glycerol into 1,3-Propanediol(1,3-PDO) with Bioelectrochemical System and Zero-Valent Iron Using Klebsiella pneumoniae L17
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO), bioelectrochemical system (BES), crude glycerol, Klebsiella pneumoniae L17, zero-valent iron (ZVI)
Crude glycerol is a major byproduct in the production of biodiesel and contains a large number of impurities. The transformation of crude glycerol into valuable compounds such as 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) using clean and renewable processes, like bioconversion, is an important task for the future of the chemical industry. In this study, 1,3-PDO bioproductions from crude and pure glycerol were estimated as 15.4 ± 0.8 and 11.4 ± 0.1 mmol/L, respectively. Because 1,3-PDO is a reductive metabolite that requires additional reducing energy, external supplements of electron for further improvement of 1,3-PDO biosynthesis were attempted using a bioelectrochemical system (BES) or zero-valent iron (ZVI). The conversions of crude and pure glycerol under electrode and iron-based cultivation were investigated for 1,3-PDO production accompanied by metabolic shift and cell growth. The BES-based conversion produced 32.6 ± 0.6 mmol/L of 1,3-PDO with ZVI implementation.

Analysis of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Content in Ash from Solid Fuel Combustion in Low-Power Boilers
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: combustion, fly ash, PAH, solid fuel
The production of thermal energy is one of the sources of environmental pollution, especially when it uses traditional fossil fuels (in particular hard and brown coal). Burning conventional fuels contributes to air pollution because of emitting gases and producing waste after the process of burning in the form of ash. The work below was aimed at determining the indirect emission of PAHs in the form of fly ash, depending on the type of fuel burned. The conducted research showed which solid fuel combustion content leaves the lowest content of PAH in the fly ash. This work contains the analysis and assessment of the content of 16 PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) in fly ash from the combustion of five selected solid fuels in low-power boilers. The following fuels were chosen for the research: hard coal with granulation above 60 mm, coal with the grain size of 25−80 mm, coal with the grain size of 8−25 mm, pellets with the grain size of 6 mm, and mixed dry wood. The results of the re... [more]

An Experimental Kinetics Study of Isopropanol Pyrolysis and Oxidation behind Reflected Shock Waves
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: chemical kinetics, ignition delay time, shock tube
Isopropanol has potential as a future bio-derived fuel and is a promising substitute for ethanol in gasoline blends. Even so, little has been done in terms of high-temperature chemical kinetic speciation studies of this molecule. To this end, experiments were conducted in a shock tube using simultaneous CO and H2O laser absorption measurements. Water and CO formation during isopropanol pyrolysis was also examined at temperatures between 1127 and 2162 K at an average pressure of 1.42 atm. Species profiles were collected at temperatures between 1332 and 1728 K and at an average pressure of 1.26 atm for equivalence ratios of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 in highly diluted mixtures of 20% helium and 79.5% argon. Species profiles were also compared to four modern C3 alcohol mechanisms, including the impact of recent rate constant measurements. The Li et al. (2019) and Saggese et al. (2021) models both best predict CO and water production under pyrolysis conditions, while the AramcoMech 3.0 and Capriolo... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: city logistics, electric vehicles, electromobility, external costs of transport, last-mile delivery, light freight railway, sustainable urban freight transport, urban consolidation centre, zero-emission vehicles
This paper addresses the issue of incorporating rail transport into an urban delivery system. Its main purpose was to identify the possibilities of utilising rail transport in a Zero-emission Urban Delivery System (ZUDS) by applying Light Freight Railway (LFR) electric trains. The study applied the following research methods: literature review, observation, case study, and mathematical computations. In order to estimate the volume of transport external costs reduction resulting from shifting urban deliveries from road to rail transport in the city of Szczecin, the EU methodology was applied to specify the amounts of external costs generated by individual modes and means of transport. The research study showed that application of LFR electric trains makes it possible to significantly reduce external costs generated by transport. Moreover, this solution may have an impact on developing Clean Transport Zones (CTZs) and may also contribute to expansion of the ZUDS. The research study resul... [more]

PMSM Torque-Speed-Efficiency Map Evaluation from Parameter Estimation Based on the Stand Still Test
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: field-oriented control, parameter estimation system identification, performance analysis, performance evaluation, permanent magnet machines
During the last decades, a wide variety of methods to estimate permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) performance have been developed. These methodologies have several advantages over conventional procedures, saving time and economic costs. This paper presents a new methodology to estimate the PMSM torque-speed-efficiency map based on the blocked rotor test using a single-phase voltage source. The methodology identifies the stator flux linkage depending on the current magnitude and angle while providing a detailed estimation of the iron losses. The torque-speed-efficiency map provides detailed information of the motor efficiency along its operating region, including the nominal conditions and the maximum power envelope. The proposed methodology does not require knowing the geometry of the machine to perform any load test, and it also avoids using expensive measurement devices and a complex experimental setup. Moreover, the proposed method allows the PMSM performance to be reproduced... [more]

A MILP Model for Revenue Optimization of a Compressed Air Energy Storage Plant with Electrolysis
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: CAES, Compressed Air Energy Storage, day-ahead-market, electrolysis, Huntorf, Hydrogen, MILP, mixed-integer linear programming, Rolling Horizon Optimization
Energy storage, both short- and long-term, will play a vital role in the energy system of the future. One storage technology that provides high power and capacity and that can be operated without carbon emissions is compressed air energy storage (CAES). However, it is widely assumed that CAES plants are not economically feasible. In this context, a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model of the Huntorf CAES plant was developed for revenue maximization when participating in the day-ahead market and the minute-reserve market in Germany. The plant model included various plant variations (increased power and storage capacity, recuperation) and a water electrolyzer to produce hydrogen to be used in the combustion chamber of the CAES plant. The MILP model was applied to four use cases that represent a market-orientated operation of the plant. The objective was the maximization of revenue with regard to price spreads and operating costs. To simulate forecast uncertainties of the market... [more]

Presentation of the 5Ds in Energy Policy: A Policy Paper to Show How Germany Can Regain Its Role as a Pioneer in Energy Policy
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: decarbonisation, decentralisation, democratisation, digitalisation, diversification, energy policy, energy transition
The widely recognised Energiewende, (“energy transition”) in Germany has lost its original momentum. We therefore address the question of how the transition process to a new energy system can be reignited. To do so, we developed the “5Ds approach”, which lays the groundwork for a process analysis and the identification of important catalysts and barriers. Focusing on the five major fields required for the energy transition, we analyse the effects of: (1) Decarbonisation: How can efficiency and renewable energies be expanded successfully? (2) Digitalisation: Which digital solutions facilitate this conversion and would be suitable as sustainable business models? (3) Decentralisation: How can potential decentralised energy and efficiency opportunities be developed? (4) Democratisation: How can participation be strengthened in order to foster acceptance (and prevent “yellow vest” protests, etc.)? (5) Diversification of service: Which services can make significant contributions in the conte... [more]

Reduction of Total Harmonic Distortion of Wind Turbine Active Power Using Blade Angle Adaptive PI Controller
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adaptive PI, equilibrium optimization, Harmony Search algorithm, PID controller, power quality, total harmonic distortion, wind turbine
Power quality can have a large detrimental effect on industrial processes and the commercial sector. Thus, this paper proposes a new technique to improve the power quality of electric power systems. This technique relies on auto-adjusting of the blade angle to mitigate the harmonics in wind generator active power. A new adaptive PI blade-angle controller is applied in this technique to reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output power. The parameters of the adaptive PI controller are initialized by using the Harmony Search algorithm (HSA), hybrid Harmony Search optimization and Equilibrium optimization (EO), and hybrid Harmony Search optimization and Teaching learning-based optimization (TLBO). The execution of the optimization algorithms relies mainly on the optimization objective function. Two optimization objective functions are mathematically modeled and compared to enhance the power quality. The first one is to minimize the sum square of error, while the second object... [more]

The Viability of Providing 24-Hour Electricity Access to Off-Grid Island Communities in the Philippines
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: electricity access, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, rural electrification, socio-economic viability, techno-economic viability
Techno-economic viability assessments of rural electrification projects, especially those that integrate renewable energy technologies, typically look at system design optimization that would yield the most favorable cost and investment scenarios. However, the true viability of these projects relies more importantly on their impact to the rural communities while ensuring positive financial returns to the project developers. This paper aims to expand the viability assessment of electrification projects in off-grid island communities in order to mainly address the apparently opposing needs of the major stakeholders at play by developing a viability assessment framework considering the techno-economic dimensions as well as the socio-economic impacts to the consumers. The analysis follows a two-phase approach, where system design optimization and financial impact calculations are done in the first phase and the socio-economic viability is accomplished in the second phase. Multivariate State Estimation Technique Combined with Modified Information Entropy Weight Method for Steam Turbine Energy Efficiency Monitoring Study
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: deviation degree, energy efficiency monitoring, information entropy weight, MSET
An energy efficiency monitoring method of the steam turbine system is studied in this paper. Multivariate state estimation technique (MSET) is utilized to compare the actual monitoring parameters and the healthy data of the equipment in normal working condition with a multi parameter estimation model. Due to the limitation of a single heat rate index in evaluating energy efficiency variation, the energy efficiency deviation degree combined with improved information entropy weight is proposed to judge the steam turbine’s operation condition levels. The index value in the modified weight method has been searched for more steady weight values calculated by information entropy values with small variation. Taking a 600 MW unit as an example, the energy efficiency levels of the unit under a 550 MW normal working condition are clustered into four groups, testifying the MSET model correctness and calculating the deviation degree value. Then, the energy efficiency status monitoring model is uti... [more]

Scattering Transform for Classification in Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: features extractor, NILM features, scattering transform
Nonintrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) uses computational methods to disaggregate and classify electrical appliances signals. The classification is usually based on the power signatures of the appliances obtained by a feature extractor. State-of-the-art results were obtained extracting NILM features with convolutional neural networks (CNN). However, it depends on the training process with large datasets or data augmentation strategies. In this paper, we propose a feature extraction strategy for NILM using the Scattering Transform (ST). The ST is a convolutional network analogous to CNN. Nevertheless, it does not need a training process in the feature extraction stage, and the filter coefficients are analytically determined (not empirically, like CNN). We perform tests with the proposed method on different publicly available datasets and compare the results with state-of-the-art deep learning-based and traditional approaches (including wavelet transform and V-I representations). Sensitivity Analysis of a Two-Phase CFD Simulation of a 1 kN Paraffin-Fueled Hybrid Rocket Motor
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, hybrid rocket, nitrous oxide, paraffin, RANS, sensitivity analysis, Simulation, two-phase
At Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), research was performed on a 1 kN lab-scale Hybrid Rocket Motor (the ULB-HRM). It has a single-port solid paraffin fuel grain and uses liquid N2O as an oxidizer. The first Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model of the motor was developed in 2020 and improved in 2021, using ANSYS Fluent software. It is a 2D axisymmetric, two-phase steady-state Reynolds-Averaged Navier−Stokes (RANS) model, which uses the average fuel and oxidizer mass flow rates as inputs. It includes oxidizer spray droplets and entrained fuel droplets, therefore adding many additional parameters compared to a single-phase model. It must be investigated how they affect the predicted operating conditions. In this article, a sensitivity analysis is performed to determine the model’s robustness. It is demonstrated that the CFD model performs well within the boundaries of its purpose, with average deviations between predicted and experimental values of about 1% for the chamber pressur... March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Compressed Air Energy Storage, economic-social-environmental concerns, multi-criteria decision analysis, potential underground reservoirs, sensibility analysis, simple additive weighting
This article presents an assessment of the most suitable compressed air energy storage (CAES) reservoirs and facilities to better integrate renewable energy into the electricity grid. The novelty of this study resides in selecting the best CAES reservoir sites through the application of a multi-criteria decision aid (MCDA) tool, specifically the simple additive weighting (SAW) method. Besides using geographic information systems (GIS) spatial representation of potential reservoir areas, for the MCDA method, several spatial criteria, environmental and social constraints, and positive incentives (e.g., the proximity to existing power generation facilities of renewable energy sources) were contemplated. As a result, sixty-two alternatives or potential reservoir sites were identified, and thirteen criteria (seven constraints and six incentives) were considered. The final stage of this study consisted of conducting a sensitivity analysis to determine the robustness of the solutions obtained... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: dosimetry, electric vehicle, electromagnetic field, exposure assessment, hearing aid, human exposure, implantable medical device, measurement standard, microgrid, pacemaker, railway transportation, uncertainty
Electromagnetic field emissions of modern power systems have increased in complexity if the many power conversion forms by means of power electronics and static converters are considered. In addition, the installed electric power has grown in many everyday applications such as wireless charging of vehicles, home integrated photovoltaic systems, high-performance electrified transportation systems, and so on. Attention must then be shifted to include harmonics and commutation components on one side, as well as closer interaction with humans, that concretizes in impact on physiological functions and interference to implantable medical devices and hearing aids. The panorama is complex in that standards and regulations have also increased significantly or underwent extensive revisions in the last 10 years or so. For assessment, the straightforward application of the limits of exposure is hindered by measurement problems (time or frequency domain methods, positioning errors, impact of uncert... [more]

A Universal Gains Selection Method for Speed Observers of Induction Machine
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: gains selection, genetic algorithms, induction machine, least-squares estimation, speed observer, system identification
Properties of state observers depend on proper gains selection. Each method of state estimation may require the implementation of specific techniques of finding those gains. The aim of this study is to propose a universal method of automatic gains selection and perform its verification on an induction machine speed observer. The method utilizes a genetic algorithm with fitness function which is directly based on the impulse response of the observer. System identification using least-squares estimation is implemented to determine the dynamic properties of the observer based on the estimation error signal. The influence of sampling time as well as signal length on the system identification has been studied. The results of gains selection using the proposed method have been compared with results obtained using the approach based on the placement of the poles of linearized estimation error equations. Optimal Determination Method of the Transposition Steps of An Extra-High Voltage Power Transmission Line
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: controlled shunt reactor, FACTS, natural power, scheme transposition phase asymmetry, STATCOM
During the design of extra-high-voltage transmission lines, studies of the influence of asymmetry due to the phase difference of the parameters on its processes and the electrical network were performed. To compensate for this source of asymmetry for transmission lines longer than 100 km, a relatively simple technical means was proposed and implemented—phase transposition (change of the mutual location of phase wires in space). However, at the same time transposition causes additional capital costs in construction and reduces reliability during operation, so when designing a specific transmission line, extra-high-voltage is desirable to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of this measure in the real electricity network. Thus, under certain conditions, even for a transmission line 600 km in length, it was possible to perform either an incomplete transposition cycle, or abandon this measure altogether.

Hybrid Physics-Based Adaptive Kalman Filter State Estimation Framework
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: anomaly detection, asymmetry index, Kalman Filter, load dynamics, measurement gross errors, measurement innovation
State-of-the art physics-model based dynamic state estimation generally relies on the assumption that the system’s transition matrix is always correct, the one that relates the states in two different time instants, which might not hold always on real-life applications. Further, while making such assumptions, state-of-the-art dynamic state estimation models become unable to discriminate among different types of anomalies, as measurement gross errors and sudden load changes, and thus automatically leads the state estimator framework to inaccuracy. Towards the solution of this important challenge, in this work, a hybrid adaptive dynamic state estimator framework is presented. Based on the Kalman Filter formulation, measurement innovation analytical-based tests are presented and integrated into the state estimator framework. Gross measurement errors and sudden load changes are automatically detected, identified, and corrected, providing continuous updating of the state estimator. Towards... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery-discharging mode, dual active bridge converter, standalone wind powergeneration system, variable DC-link voltage control
In this study, we deal with a dual active bridge (DAB) converter-based battery charger in a standalone wind power generation system (WPGS) with a small-scale wind turbine. However, the power conversion efficiency under the low power output in the discharging mode is low. In this paper, we propose variable DC-link voltage control in a standalone WPGS with a DAB converter under a light load. The proposed control can compensate for the shortage of generated power and suppress the peak value of the transformer current. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed control can decrease the peak value of the transformer current and improve the power conversion efficiency of the DAB converter. An experimental setup was constructed to confirm the basic operation of the variable DC-link voltage control. In addition, a reference DC-link voltage switchover control is proposed to enable a high-efficiency drive under all load ranges. From simulation results, the power loss can be reduced by the... Subject: Process Control
Keywords: buck–boost converter, DC/DC power converters, discontinuous conduction mode, electric vehicles, proportional–integral control, sliding-mode control
This paper solves the buck−boost converter operation problem in the discontinuous conduction mode and the feeding a DC bus of a combined battery/solar-powered electric vehicle grid. Since the sun’s radiation has a very important effect on the performance of photovoltaic solar modules due to its continuous variation, the main task of the system under study is the regulation of the output voltage from an MPPT system located at the output of the panels in order to obtain a DC bus voltage that is fixed to 24 V. This is ensured via a double-loop scheme, where the current inner loop relies on sliding-mode control; meanwhile, the outer voltage loop considers a proportional−integral action. Additionally, the current loop implements an adaptive hysteresis logic in order to operate at a fixed frequency. The closed-loop system’s performance is checked via numerical results with respect to step changes in the load, input voltage, and output voltage reference variations.
