Economic Aspects and Sustainability of Ethanol Production—A Systematic Literature Review
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: biorefinery, ethanol generations, gasoline blending, Sustainability
Meeting the increasing global energy demand in a sustainable way is a major challenge for humanity. One of the solutions in the transportation sector is ethanol, which is currently the only economically viable direct fuel substitute. In addition to the first-generation technology, which provides the vast majority of production, better results can be continuously realized by using advanced technologies. This study aims to investigate the economic aspects and sustainability issues of ethanol production with a systematic literature review. During the selection process, 64 studies from a total of 16,141 identified articles were analyzed in-depth. There is a consensus that first-generation production methods cannot result in a long-term solution. However, advanced technologies are currently immature, and ethanol production is more expensive with them. The use of wastes/residues and coproducts can improve both the economic outlook and sustainability of the advanced technologies. Overall, the... [more]

On-Line EIS Measurement for High-Power Fuel Cell Systems Using Simulink Real-Time
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fuel cell systems, high power application, impedance measurement, Nyquist plot, on-line EIS, real-time target, Simulink Real-Time, Speedgoat
Impedance measurements by EIS are used to build a physical circuit-based model that enables various fault diagnostics and lifetime predictions. These research areas are becoming increasingly crucial for the safety and preventive maintenance of fuel cell power systems. It is challenging to apply the impedance measurement up to commercial applications at the field level. Although EIS technology has been widely used to measure and analyze the characteristics of fuel cells, EIS is applicable mainly at the single-cell level. In the case of stacks constituting a power generation system in the field, it is difficult to apply EIS due to various limitations in the high-power condition with uncontrollable loads. In this paper, we present a technology that can measure EIS on-line by injecting the perturbation current to fuel cell systems operating in the field. The proposed EIS method is developed based on Simulink Real-Time so that it can be applied to embedded devices. Modeling and simulation o... [more]

Optimal Operation of Combined Energy and Water Systems for Community Resilience against Natural Disasters
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: demand response, electric microgrid, energy optimization, natural disasters, power system resilience, water micro-net
One of the most critical challenges for modern power systems is to reliably supply electricity to its consumers during and in the aftermath of natural disasters. As our dependence on electrical power has increased over the years, long-term power outages can lead to devastating impacts on affected communities. Furthermore, power outages can halt the operation of water treatment plants, leading to shortages in clean water, which is essential during post-disaster recovery. One way to address this is to temporarily reconfigure power and water networks into localized networks, i.e., electric microgrids and water micro-nets, that utilize local resources to supply local demand independently of the main power grid and/or water network. Utilizing distributed energy resources such as wind and solar and treating wastewater locally for potable reuse can provide the operational flexibility for such systems to operate sustainably. However, due to uncertainties in both renewable energy generation and... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, dual fuel, marine engine, multi-regime combustion, pre-chamber
A natural-gas-diesel dual-fuel marine engine with a pre-chamber is a promising solution for ocean transportation to meet the International Maritime Organization (IMO) emission regulations. This engine system employs a pre-chamber with direct injection of diesel to ignite premixed natural gas due to its higher ignition energy, which can enable lower lean limit and higher thermal efficiency. The dual-fuel pre-chamber marine engine presents complex multi-regime combustion characteristics in- and outside the pre-chamber, thus posing challenges in its numerical simulation in a cost-effective manner. Therefore, this paper presents a three-dimensional modeling study for the multi-regime combustion in a large-bore two-stroke marine dual-fuel engine, proposing a novel mapping approach, which couples the well-stirred reactor (WSR) model with the G-equation model to achieve high computational accuracy and efficiency simultaneously. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: correlation, fuzzy logic, map optimization, power capacity, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, wind seasonality, wind turbines
In this study, we analyze observational and predicted wind energy datasets of the lower 48 states of the United States, and we intend to predict an optimal map for new turbines placement. Several approaches have been implemented to investigate the correlation between current wind power stations, power capacity, wind seasonality, and site selection. The correlation between stations is carried out according to Pearson correlation coefficient approach joined with the spherical law of cosines to calculate the distances. The high correlation values between the stations spaced within a distance of 100 km show that installing more turbines close to the current farms would assist the electrical grid. The total power capacity indicates that the current wind turbines are utilizing approximately 70% of the wind resources available in the turbine’s sites. Subject: Environment
Keywords: agro-byproducts, heating rate, mass reduction model, mass yield, torrefaction
Global warming is accelerating due to the increase in greenhouse gas emissions. Accordingly, research on the use of biomass as energy sources, is being actively conducted worldwide to reduce CO2 emissions. Although the production of agro-byproducts is vast, their utilization for energy production has not been fully investigated. This study suggests an optimal torrefaction process condition for agro-byproducts, such as grape branch and perilla, that have moisture content but low calorific values. To determine whether these agro-byproducts can be used for energy sources as substituents of fossil fuels, a mass reduction model was established and validated via experimental results. Thermogravimetric analysis was conducted for different heating rates, and the activation energy and frequency factor were derived through the analysis. The model was developed by changes in rate constants, moisture content, ash content, and lignocellulose content in biomass. To ascertain the optimal torrefaction... [more]

A Study of Blockage Effects at the Wind Turbine and Wind Farm Scales
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: blockage effect, blockage interaction, Computational Fluid Dynamics, induction, wind farms
The paper provides novel insights into the physics behind the wind turbine and wind farm blockages as well as their effects on the energy yield based on the momentum and energy balance. The current work presents blockage effects at two scales: the local scale and the wind farm scale. We clarify the combined effect of local blockages when more than one turbine is present. The work demonstrates why two turbines, which are positioned one behind the other, induce a mutual decrease in energy yield. When the turbines are placed in a row, there is an increase of energy from the end to the middle of the row because of the restriction of the expansion flow. As in the case of two turbines placed behind each other, back rows induce a power decrease for the rows in front of them and the effect increases from the edge to the center. The work also elucidates for the first time how the power output of an isolated row has a maximum in the center, whereas, in a wind farm, wind turbines on the edge of t... [more]

Considering rising pollution as well as fuel expenses, it has now become critical to transition to a sustainable method of transportation. As a result, automakers have begun to spend on research and development in the electric vehicle (EV) industry. The amount of EVs has expanded rapidly in recent years. This is owing to new improved technology, particularly in electric motor engineering, as well as government initiatives to limit the level of environmental impact produced by combustion engines. Because EVs are powered by electricity, implementing their charging stations presents certain complications. In this paper, we have discussed the different types of EVs, such as BEVs, FCEVs, HEVs, PHEVs, and REHEVs. Even though the capacity of many of these electric car models has been substantially enhanced within the past few years, some challenges remain as a selection barrier for several customers. Optimal Power Flow Solution of Wind-Integrated Power System Using Novel Metaheuristic Method
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Aquila Optimizer, stochastic optimal power flow, Weibull probability distribution, wind energy
Wind energy is particularly significant in the power system today since it is a cheap and clean power source. The unpredictability of wind speed leads to uncertainty in devolved power which increases the difficulty in wind energy system operation. This paper presents a stochastic optimal power flow (SCOPF) for obtaining the best scheduled power from wind farms while lowering total operational costs. A novel metaheuristics method called Aquila Optimizer (AO) is used to address the SCOPF problem due to its highly nonconvex and nonlinear nature. Wind speed is represented by the Weibull probability distribution function (PDF), which is used to anticipate the cost of wind-generated power from a wind farm based on scheduled power. Weibull parameters that provide the best match to wind data are estimated using the AO approach. The suggested wind generation cost model includes the opportunity costs of wind power underestimation and overestimation. Three IEEE systems (30, 57, and 118) are utili... [more]
