The Effect of the NaCl Bulk Concentration on the Resistance of Ion Exchange Membranes—Measuring and Modeling
Joost Veerman
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrodialysis, ion exchange membranes, membrane model, membrane resistance, resistance measurement, reverse electrodialysis
Ion exchange membranes are used in different fields of energy and separation technology such as electrodialysis, reverse electrodialysis, and fuel cells. Important aspects are permselectivity, resistance, and water transport. In this paper, we focus on the effect of the bulk NaCl concentration on the membrane resistance. Data from 36 publications containing 145 datasets using 6 different methods for measuring membrane resistance were compared. This study showed that the membrane resistance is dependent on the method of measuring. Two probable causes are identified: the application of reference electrodes and the presence of direct electrode−membrane contact. In addition, three physical and three phenomenological membrane models were tested by fitting these to the datasets. First, fits in the resistance domain were compared with fits in the conductivity domain. Resistance fits are sensitive to fluctuations in low concentrations, whereas fits in the conductivity domain are subject to non... [more]
Short-Range Structure of Ti0.63V0.27Fe0.10D1.73 from Neutron Total Scattering and Reverse Monte Carlo Modelling

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: BCC alloys, hydrogen storage, neutron total scattering, reverse Monte Carlo modelling
Ti-V-based body-centered cubic (BCC) alloys have potential for large-scale hydrogen storage if expensive vanadium is substituted with much cheaper Fe-containing ferrovanadium. Use of ferrovanadium reduces the alloys’ hydrogen storage capacity. This is puzzling since the amount of Fe is low and hydrogen atoms are accommodated in interstitial sites which are partly coordinated by Fe in many intermetallic compounds. The present work is aimed at finding a structural explanation for Fe-induced capacity loss in Ti-V alloys. Since such alloys and their hydrides are highly disordered without long-range occupational order of the different metal species, it was necessary to employ a technique which is sensitive to local structure. Neutron total scattering coupled with reverse Monte Carlo modelling was thus employed to elucidate short-range atomic correlations in Ti0.63V0.27Fe0.10D1.73 from the pair distribution function. It was found that Fe atoms form clusters and that the majority of the vacan... [more]
Thermal Analysis of Power Rectifiers in Steady-State Conditions
Adrian Plesca, Lucian Mihet-Popa
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: mathematical model, power rectifier, temperature distribution, thermal modeling and simulation
Power rectifiers from electrical traction systems, but not only, can be irreversibly damaged if the temperature of the semiconductor junction reaches high values to determine thermal runaway and melting. The paper proposes a mathematical model to calculate the junction and the case temperature in power diodes used in bridge rectifiers, which supplies an inductive-resistive load. The new thermal model may be used to investigate the thermal behavior of the power diodes in steady-state regime for various values of the tightening torque, direct current through the diode, airflow speed and load parameters (resistance and inductance). The obtained computed values were compared with 3D thermal simulation results and experimental tests. The calculated values are aligned with the simulation results and experimental data.

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cascaded voltage doubler rectifier, interleaved converter, overlap time, PHEV, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, small transformer ratio, switching technique
Energy transformation by power electronic converters is not feasible without the efficient use of renewable energy. The article tries to extend the use of renewable energy to PHEV battery charging. In PHEV, the battery is one of the major sources of stored energy. The converter used for charging these batteries is of crucial concern. The paper addresses various challenges in designing a DC to DC converter for battery charging in DC bus. An optimized converter is designed to work with renewable energy sources to accomplish a high boost ratio, low input current ripple, low output voltage ripple, high power efficiency, and high power density. A combination of two interleaved boost converters is effectively used with the overlap time switching to achieve a high voltage boost ratio in forming the DC bus. Transformer isolation is used to increase reliability and boost ratio further. The secondary side employs a series-connected voltage doubler. The converter boosts an input voltage of 24 V t... [more]
Efficiency Measurement and Factor Analysis of China’s Solar Photovoltaic Power Generation Considering Regional Differences Based on a FAHP−DEA Model
Jing Yang, Changhui Yang, Xiaojia Wang, Manli Cheng, Jingjing Shang
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: data envelopment analysis (DEA), efficiency measurement, factor analysis, fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP), photovoltaic
Driven by the transformation of the energy structure, China’s photovoltaic (PV) power generation industry has made remarkable achievements in recent years. However, there are more than 30 regions (cities/provinces) in China, and the economic, policy, technological, and the environmental conditions of each region are significantly different, which leads to a huge discrepancy in PV power generation efficiency. To address the imbalance in the development of PV industry, first, this paper employed the integrated fuzzy analytic hierarchy process−data envelopment analysis (FAHP−DEA) model to evaluate the PV power generation efficiency of 30 regions in China. Second, Tobit regression model was used to examine the effects of 9 potential influencing factors. Third, a concrete analysis was conducted, and discussion based on the efficiency rankings and regression results was made. Additionally, the FAHP−DEA model proposed in this study can also be applied to the efficiency evaluation issues of ot... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: co-simulation, control and operation, design optimization, multi-carrier energy systems
Innovations in today’s energy grids are mainly driven by the need to reduce carbon emissions and the necessary integration of decentralized renewable energy sources. In this context, a transition towards hybrid distribution systems, which effectively couple thermal and electrical networks, promises to exploit hitherto unused synergies for increasing efficiency and flexibility. However, this transition poses practical challenges, starting already in the design phase where established design optimization approaches struggle to capture the technical details of control and operation of such systems. This work addresses these obstacles by introducing a design approach that enables the analysis and optimization of hybrid thermal-electrical distribution systems with explicit consideration of control. Based on a set of key prerequisites and modeling requirements, co-simulation is identified as the most appropriate method to facilitate the detailed analysis of such systems. Furthermore, a metho... A Piezoelectric Harvesting Interface with Capacitive Partial Electric Charge Extraction for Energy Harvesting from Irregular High-Voltage Input
Muhammad Bilawal Khan, Hassan Saif, Yoonmyung Lee
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: capacitive partial electric charge extraction, energy harvester, harvesting interface, high-voltage harvesting, piezoelectric generator
A fully integrated piezoelectric energy harvesting interface is proposed for harvesting energy from irregular human motion. To handle irregular pulse inputs generated by the piezoelectric transducer (PZT), the proposed harvesting interface includes a wake-up controller that activates the harvesting interface only when human motion is detected and deformation is applied on the piezoelectric material, thereby keeping static power loss low. The PZT output voltage is increased to its peak voltage by removing any type of external load capacitance seen by the PZT during its deformation. Once the peak voltage is detected, a multi-voltage conversion-ratio-based switched-capacitor circuit is activated to transfer PZT-generated energy to the battery in multiple ratio steps to maximize the conversion efficiency, with the help of a carefully designed harvesting controller. To deal with open-circuit voltages (VOCS) higher than the maximum voltage tolerated (VMAX) by available technology, capacitive... [more]
Public Preferences in a Shifting Energy Future: Comparing Public Views of Eight Energy Sources in North America’s Pacific Northwest
Shawn Olson Hazboun, Hilary Schaffer Boudet
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: energy policy, fossil fuels, public opinion, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, social acceptability
The U.S. and Canada continue to face major changes in energy production. Mounting awareness of the climate crisis has placed increasing importance on developing renewable energy sources, however, advances in fossil fuel extraction technology have opened vast domestic reserves of oil and natural gas. Public preferences for energy policy play a role in determining energy futures, but researchers rarely simultaneously compare public views across multiple renewable and non-renewable energies or across country boundaries. Here, we used a 2019 online survey sample (n = 1500) to compare predictors of support for eight fuel sources for electricity generation in British Columbia, Canada, and Washington and Oregon, USA. Results indicate the highest support overall for renewables (wind, solar, wave/tidal energy, geothermal) and the lowest for fossil fuels (coal and natural gas), nuclear, and hydropower. Mixed-effects regression modeling indicates that views on climate and the balance between envi... [more]
A Method to Introduce Building Performance Simulation to Beginners
Niko Gentile, Jouri Kanters, Henrik Davidsson
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 3D modelling, BPS, building performance simulation, energy and buildings, energy simulation, higher education, learning, pedagogy, SOLO taxonomy, teaching, visual programming
Competence in performing Building Performance Simulations (BPS) is a fundamental asset for an energy specialist. However, teaching BPS to new students can be challenging, often due to the overwhelming capabilities of the software. The consequences for students are frustration and lack of confidence using the software, dividing group work based on previous expertise and, most importantly, the inability to predict and critically analyse results due to the superficial understanding of simulations. This paper presents and evaluates a simple method named ‘control method’ which is intended to introduce BPS in classes where students have a limited experience working with BPS, significantly different educational backgrounds, and where the time to teach BPS in class is limited. The method is built around the Structure of Observed Learning Outcomes taxonomy. It aims to provide the students with a basic understanding of the input-output relationship between parameters, prompting the use of BPS in... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Drift problem, MPPT algorithm, Proteus, PV Simulator
The real implementation of the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controllers for the photovoltaic (PV) systems is still a big challenge for researchers working in this field. Often, they use simulation tools to assess the performance of their MPPT algorithms before actual implementation. In this context, this paper aims to propose a trusted simulation of a PV system designed under Proteus software. The proposed PV simulator can be used to verify and evaluate the performance of MPPT algorithms with a closer approximation to the real implementation. The main advantage of this model that it contains a real microcontroller, as can be found in reality, so that same code for the MPPT algorithm used in the simulation will be used in real implementation. In contrast, when using (Powersim Software) PSIM or Matlab/Simulink, the code of the algorithm must be rewritten once the real experiment begins, because these tools don’t provide a microcontroller or an electronic board in which our algorit... A Holistic Framework for Supporting Maintenance and Asset Management Life Cycle Decisions for Power Systems
Kiki Ayu, Akilu Yunusa-Kaltungo
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: asset management, case study, energy systems, engineering failure analysis, maintenance strategies, power transformers
The outburst of population as well as increasing industrialisation have triggered a very prominent imbalance between electricity demand and supply in emerging economies such as Indonesia. Based on this premise, electricity generation and distribution firms such as Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) are faced with an urgent need to enhance availability and reliability through capacity expansion as well as the institutionalisation of cost-effective maintenance and asset management (MAM) principles. Some of the principles recommended here involve embedding customised overall health index (OHI) and total life cycle cost (LCC) estimation principles into engineering decisions that relate to asset renewal and/or replacement. While discussions about the fundamental theories and estimation approaches for OHI and LCC for power transformers (PTs) already exist in the current body of literature, however, they are mostly in a generic form which has somewhat limited proper implementation of these valua... A Procedure to Determine the Droop Constants of Voltage Controllers Coping with Multiple DG Interactions in Active Distribution Systems
Giuseppe Fusco, Mario Russo
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active distributed generation, control system stability, decentralized control, droop control, interaction measure, MIMO modeling, voltage/reactive power control
In modern distribution systems, the presence of an increasing amount of Distributed Generation (DG) systems causes over-/under-voltage problems, due to the reverse power flows. To face these problems, the voltage-reactive power droop controllers of DG systems are commonly used for their simplicity and are required by international standards. On the other hand, the interaction among voltage droop controllers of different DG systems may introduce instability. The paper presents an effective procedure to determine the droop constants of voltage-reactive power controllers for multiple DG systems. Firstly, a multi-input multi-output model of the distribution system is introduced. Then, using the concept of the interaction measure under decentralized control, a simple constraint is added to the single-input single-output design of each droop controller. Such a constraint guarantees stability with respect to the interaction among the voltage droop controllers of all the DG systems. Eventually... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: load matching indicators, photovoltaics, self-consumption, self-sufficiency
Three load matching indicators (self-consumption rate, self-sufficiency rate, loss of load probability) and the CO2 emissions were evaluated for 55 Cypriot households with 3 kWp rooftop photovoltaic (PV) generators. The calculations were performed using 30-minute generation and consumption data from a large scale smart meter project in Cyprus. To investigate the effects of recent advances in local legislation, an analysis for higher PV capacities (5 kWp and 10 kWp) was also performed. The PV generation profiles for 5 kWp and 10 kWp PVs were obtained by scaling the 3 kWp PV generation profiles. The results showed that the self-consumption of the analyzed households varied seasonally, as it was related to their heating and cooling demand. More interestingly, the ratio between the households’ annual electricity generation and demand, formally defined here as generation-to-demand ratio (GTDR), was found to be related to the value ranges of the studied load matching indicators. Hence, on av... [more]
Where Will You Park? Predicting Vehicle Locations for Vehicle-to-Grid
Rob Shipman, Julie Waldron, Sophie Naylor, James Pinchin, Lucelia Rodrigues, Mark Gillott
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: automated machine learning, Machine Learning, V2G, vehicle location prediction, vehicle-to-grid
Vehicle-to-grid services draw power or curtail demand from electric vehicles when they are connected to a compatible charging station. In this paper, we investigated automated machine learning for predicting when vehicles are likely to make such a connection. Using historical data collected from a vehicle tracking service, we assessed the technique’s ability to learn and predict when a fleet of 48 vehicles was parked close to charging stations and compared this with two moving average techniques. We found the ability of all three approaches to predict when individual vehicles could potentially connect to charging stations to be comparable, resulting in the same set of 30 vehicles identified as good candidates to participate in a vehicle-to-grid service. We concluded that this was due to the relatively small feature set and that machine learning techniques were likely to outperform averaging techniques for more complex feature sets. We also explored the ability of the approaches to pred... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery recycling, battery reusing, echelon utilization, new energy vehicle, power battery
With the rapid development of new energy vehicles (NEVs) industry in China, the reusing of retired power batteries is becoming increasingly urgent. In this paper, the critical issues for power batteries reusing in China are systematically studied. First, the strategic value of power batteries reusing, and the main modes of battery reusing are analyzed. Second, the economic benefit models of power batteries echelon utilization and recycling are constructed. Finally, the economic benefits of lithium iron phosphate (LIP) battery and ternary lithium (TL) battery under different reusing modes are analyzed based on the economic benefit models. The results show that when the industrial chain is fully coordinated, LIP battery echelon utilization is profitable based on a reasonable scenario scheme. However, the multi-level echelon utilization is only practical under an ideal scenario, and more attention should be paid to the first level echelon utilization. Besides, the performance matching of... [more]

Hsien Hua Lee, Cheng-Han Chen
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: caisson breakwater application, OWC, parametric study, Wave Energy, wave power converting system
This study focuses on the analysis of the parameters of an oscillating water column (OWC) wave energy conversion system and wave conditions. Interactions between the dimensions of the OWC chambers and wave conditions are all taken into account to design an alternative OWC converter, called caisson-based OWC type wave energy converting system. A numerical method using an unsteady Navier-Stokes equations theorem in conservation form is used to analyze the proposed analytical model. The objective of this study is to try to apply an OWC wave energy converter to a caisson breakwater, which has been constructed in a harbor. The structure proposed in this study is a series of sets of independent systems, in which each set of converters is composed of three chambers to capture the wave energy, while better ensuring the safety of the caisson breakwater. Responses to be analyzed related to the conversion efficiency of the caisson-based OWC wave energy converting system include the airflow veloci... [more]
Influence of Chloride/Iodide Ratio in MAPbI3-xClx Perovskite Solar Devices: Case of Low Temperature Processable AZO Sub-Layer

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: chloride/iodide ratio, low temperature processable AZO, MAPbI3-xClx perovskite
A significant current challenge for perovskite solar technology is succeeding in designing devices all by low temperature processes. This could help for both rigid devices industrialisation and flexible devices development. The depositions of nanoparticles from colloidal suspensions consequently emerge as attractive approaches, especially due to their potential for low temperature curing not only for the photoactive perovskite layer but also for charge transporting layers. Here, NIP solar cells based on aluminium doped zinc oxide (AZO) electron transport layer were fabricated using a low temperature compatible process for AZO deposition. For the extensively studied perovskites based on methylammonium lead halides (MAPbI3-xClx), the chloride/iodide equation is widely proposed to follow an optimal value corresponding to an introduced MAI:PbCl2 ratio of 3:1. However, the perovskite formulation should be considered as a key parameter for the optimization of power conversion efficiency when... [more]
The Use of Artificial Neural Networks to Analyze Greenhouse Gas and Air Pollutant Emissions from the Mining and Quarrying Sector in the European Union
Jarosław Brodny, Magdalena Tutak
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: atmosphere, European Green Deal, European Union Countries, greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions, mining and quarrying sector, sustainable development
The European Union (EU) is considered one of the most economically developed regions worldwide. It was driven by the mining industry for several decades. Despite certain changes in this area, a number of mineral and energy resources are still being mined in the EU. Nevertheless, mining activities are accompanied by many unfavorable phenomena, especially for the environment, such as greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions. The great diversity of the EU countries in terms of the size of the “mining and quarrying” sector means that both the volume and structure of these emissions in individual countries varies. In order to assess the current state of affairs, research was conducted to look at the structure and volume of these emissions in individual EU countries. The aim of the study was to divide these countries into homogenous groups by structure and volume of studied emissions. In order to reflect both the specificity and diversity of the EU countries, this division was based on the... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: agricultural production, bioenergy, circular bioeconomy, digestate, environmental impact, Miscanthus x giganteus
In Poland, unutilised land occupies approximately two million hectares, and it could be partly dedicated to the production of perennial crops. This study aimed to determine the environmental impact of the production of giant miscanthus (Miscanthus x giganteus J.M. Greef & M. Deuter). The experiment was set up on a low-fertility site. The crop was cultivated on sandy soil, fertilised with digestate, and mineral fertilisers (in the dose of 85 and 170 kg ha−1 N), and was compared with giant miscanthus cultivated with no fertilisation (control). The cradle-to-farm gate system boundary was applied. Fertilisers were more detrimental to the environment than the control in all analysed categories. The weakest environmental links in the production of miscanthus in the non-fertilised treatment were fuel consumption and the application of pre-emergent herbicide. In fertilised treatments, fertilisers exerted the greatest environmental impact in all the stages of crop production. The production and... [more]
Unintended Consequences of National Climate Policy on International Electricity Markets—Case Finland’s Ban on Coal-Fired Generation
Anahita Farsaei, Sanna Syri, Ville Olkkonen, Ali Khosravi
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: CO2 emission, decarbonization, electricity import
Finland has adopted a high profile in climate change mitigation. A national target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2035 has been declared. As a part of this, the use of coal for energy purposes has been banned from May 2029 onwards. The Nordic electricity market was a world fore-runner in creating a liberalized, multi-national electricity market in the 1990s. At present, the electricity systems of Finland, Sweden, and Norway are already very low-carbon. The Baltic countries Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania joined the Nordic market about a decade ago. Estonian electricity production is the most carbon-intensive of all the EU countries due to the extensive use of domestic oil shale. Especially Lithuania still suffers from capacity deficit created by the closure of the Soviet time nuclear reactor Ignalina in Lithuania. This paper presents the ambitions of the EU and national level energy and climate policies and models the multi-national impacts of Finland’s forthcoming closure of coal-fi... [more]
A Novel Damage Model for Strata Layers and Coal Mass

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coal–rock interaction damage, continuum constitutive model, micro-mechanical interaction, rock/joint quality
Coal burst occurrences are affected by a range of mining and geological factors. Excessive slipping between the strata layers may release a considerable amount of strain energy, which can be destructive. A competent strata is also more vulnerable to riveting a large amount of strain energy. If the stored energy in the rigid roof reaches a certain level, it will be released suddenly which can create a serious dynamic reaction leading to coal burst incidents. In this paper, a new damage model based on the modified thermomechanical continuum constitutive model in coal mass and the contact layers between the rock and coal mass is proposed. The original continuum constitutive model was initially developed for the cemented granular materials. The application of the modified continuum constitutive model is the key aspect to understand the momentum energy between the coal−rock interactions. The transformed energy between the coal mass and different strata layers will be analytically demonstrat... [more]
Proportional Resonant Current Control and Output-Filter Design Optimization for Grid-Tied Inverters Using Grey Wolf Optimizer

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: grey wolf optimizer, grid-tied inverter, LCL filter, passive damping, PR controllers
This paper proposes a new method for the simultaneous determination of the optimal control parameters of proportional resonant controllers and the optimal design of the output filter of a grid-tied three-phase inverter. The proposed method, based on the grey wolf optimization (GWO) algorithm, addresses both optimization problems as a single process to achieve a better system frequency response. It optimizes the unknown parameters by using a fitness function to find the best trade-off between the following fundamental terms: the harmonic attenuation rate; the power loss, through the damping resistor; and the current tracking error in the stationary frame, ensuring the system and grid stability. To validate the proposed optimization methodology, two case studies are considered with different output filter topologies with passive damping methods. The results obtained from the proposed optimization procedure were analyzed and discussed according to the fitness function terms.

Keywords: intergenerational equity, municipal socioeconomic development, oil industry, oil royalties, panel regression
Oil wealth can foster social inequality if not properly managed. This is due to the migration of production factors from different economic activities to the oil sector. As a result, unemployment, poverty, political instability, a reduction in development, among other undesirable effects on society, may arise. With that in mind, this research evaluates the government’s role in the socioeconomic development of the oil producing municipalities in Rio Grande do Norte State (RN), the largest onshore producer in Brazil. The research uses panel regression as it allows broad analyses of the space and time dimensions to be performed. In addition, it relies on statistical testing at all stages to make the research analysis more appropriate and consistent. The proposed model revealed better socioeconomic development indicators in municipalities where the local Government made public savings as reserve funds. Furthermore, the results show that appropriate public savings management allows municipa... [more]
Evolution of the HVDC Link Connecting Offshore Wind Farms to Onshore Power Systems

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DCDC converter, HVDC, HVDC transmission, multi-terminal HVDC, offshore wind energy, voltage source converter
This paper presents an overview of the DC link development and evolution dedicated to HVDC structure for connecting offshore wind power plants to onshore power systems. The growing demand for the green energy has forced investors in power industry to look for resources further out at sea. Hence, the development of power electronics and industrial engineering has enabled offshore wind farms to be situated further from the shore and in deeper waters. However, their development will require, among other technologies, DC-DC conversion systems. The advantages of HVDC over HVAC technology in relation to transmission distance are given. The different HVDC configurations and topologies of HVDC converters are elucidated. In this context, the HVDC grids are a promising alternative for the expansion of the existing AC grid.
