AC “Back to Back” Switching Device in Industrial Application
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: back to back, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), inductance, industrial automation, measurement, power converters, power quality, silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR)
In industrial applications, among several varieties of semiconductor devices available, a silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) is often used in managing and protecting various systems with different applications. Hence, it is of the utmost importance to design a control system which can operate over a range of electrical loads without any modifications in its hardware and/or software. This paper analyzes and investigates in detail the power circuit effects on conduction delay and SCR functioning. Moreover, two different commonly used driving systems for SCR application have been introduced, discussed, and evaluated. Concerning driving systems, here, three aspects have paramount importance and are consequently taken into consideration, namely the driver system losses, the conduction delay, and in particular, some power quality indices. The conduction delay is a parameter of great importance, as being able to control and reduce it to the minimum allowed by the application can bring signifi... [more]

Investigations on the Performance of Grounding Device with Spike Rods (GDSR) with the Effects of Soil Resistivity and Configurations
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: earthing systems, electrode geometry, fast-impulses, high-magnitude currents
In a recently published work, the characteristics of a new grounding device with spike rods (GDSR) with various arrangements of ground electrodes under high magnitude impulse currents (up to 16 kA), was investigated. In an earlier study, the ground electrodes were installed in low resistivity test media, with resistance at steady state (Rdc) values ranging from 11 Ω to 75 Ω. In practice, various soil resistivity, ranging from a few Ohm-metres to several kiloOhm-metres, have been reported in the standards. It is, therefore, necessary to investigate the characteristics of GDSR with different arrangements of ground electrodes in various soil resistivities under high impulse currents. In this present paper, six configurations of ground electrodes are used, installed at three different sites and subjected to high impulse conditions. Impulse test data of all the grounding systems are analyzed. The Finite Element Method (FEM) is used to compute the electric field values of the ground electrod... [more]

Model of R134a Liquid−Vapor Two-Phase Heat Transfer Coefficient for Pulsating Flow Boiling in an Evaporator Using Response Surface Methodology
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: heat transfer coefficient, liquid–vapor two-phase, pulsating flow, response surface methodology
The present study proposes a model to predict the heat transfer coefficient in R134a liquid−vapor two-phase pulsating flow boiling in an evaporator using the experimental data and response surface methodology (RSM). The model is based on the current existing empirical correlation for R134a liquid−vapor two-phase continuous flow with an imposed modification factor. The model for the imposed modification factor is the function of the pulsating period and inlet/outlet vapor quality, which is obtained using the limited experimental data. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) is carried out to test the significance of the model and normal probability of residuals is analyzed as well. Results show that the regression model produces a mean error of −4.3% and a standard deviation of 15.4%, compared to experimental results. Of the data 95.1% is contained inside a ±50% error window, which indicates that the proposed model could predict the heat transfer coefficient of R134a liquid−vapor two-phase puls... [more]

A Calibration Procedure for an Analytical Wake Model Using Wind Farm Operational Data
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: analytical wake model, power prediction, wake modeling, wind energy, wind farm optimization
Wind energy is one of the fastest growing renewable energy sources in the U.S. Wind turbine wakes change the flow field within wind farms and reduce power generation. Prior research has used experimental and computational methods to investigate and model wind farm wake effects. However, these methods are costly and time-consuming to use commercially. In contrast, a simple analytical approach can provide reasonably accurate estimates of wake effects on flow and power. To reducing errors in wake modeling, one must calibrate the model based on a specific wind farm setting. The purpose of this research is to develop a calibration procedure for wind farm wake modeling using a simple analytical approach and wind turbine operational data obtained from the Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. The proposed procedure uses a Gaussian-based analytical wake model and wake superposition model. The wake growth rate varies across the wind farm based on the local streamwise turbulen... [more]

Exploring the “Energy-Saving Personality Traits” in the Office and Household Situation: An Empirical Study
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: attitude, Big Five, energy-saving, household, office, personality traits, pro-environment
Behavior-driven energy conservation has been a promising strategy for reducing building energy consumption as well as carbon emissions. With the intention of revealing the impacts of an individual’s personality basis on energy conservation behavioral attitudes and intentions in households and offices, the present study proposes and conducts an experiment in Xi’an, China with two groups for the investigation of such attitudes towards household energy-saving behavior (HESB) and office energy-saving behavior (OESB), respectively. The research adopts structural equation modeling for experiment data analysis. The analysis results suggest that the two personality traits, Agreeableness and Neuroticism, are significantly related to both HESB and OESB attitudes. Especially, agreeable people tend to present stronger energy-saving attitudes, while individuals with higher Neuroticism are less likely to do so. The results indicate that the impacts of these two traits on energy-saving attitude are f... [more]

Thermo-Hydraulic Performance of Solar Air Collectors with Artificially Roughened Absorbers: A Comparative Review of Semi-Empirical Models
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: absorber, artificial roughness, Optimization, solar air heating
Due to the poor thermal characteristics of the air, the absorber roughness of solar air collectors is commonly artificially increased in order to enhance the heat transfer to the air stream. However, this is also accompanied by an undesirable increase in the pumping power due to increased friction losses. As a result, several authors have experimentally investigated several ways of maximizing the heat transfer while minimizing the friction losses of different absorbers, resulting in the development of semi-empirical functions relating the Nusselt number (a measure of heat transfer) and the friction factor (a measure of friction losses) to the Reynolds number and the roughness parameters considered for each absorber. The present paper reviews, considering the publications from the last ten years, these semi-empirical functions. Moreover, the optimum roughness parameters and operating conditions of the absorbers were estimated by finding the maximum values of two performance parameters (... [more]

Definition of LCA Guidelines in the Geothermal Sector to Enhance Result Comparability
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: cooling, electricity, environmental impact, geothermal energy, harmonization, heat &, life cycle assessment, renewable resource
Geothermal energy could play a crucial role in the European energy market and future scenarios focused on sustainable development. Thanks to its constant supply of concentrated energy, it can support the transition towards a low-carbon economy. In the energy sector, the decision-making process should always be supported by a holistic science-based approach to allow a comprehensive environmental assessment of the technological system, such as the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. In the geothermal sector, the decision-making is particularly difficult due to the large variability of reported results on environmental performance across studies. This calls for harmonized guidelines on how to conduct LCAs of geothermal systems to enhance transparency and results comparability, by ensuring consistent methodological choices and providing indications for harmonized results reporting. This work identifies the main critical aspects of performing an LCA of geothermal systems and provides s... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery pack, calibration optimization, electric vehicle, electrochemical-thermal modeling, lithium-ion battery
Large-scale introduction of electric vehicles (EVs) to the market sets outstanding requirements for battery performance to extend vehicle driving range, prolong battery service life, and reduce battery costs. There is a growing need to accurately and robustly model the performance of both individual cells and their aggregated behavior when integrated into battery packs. This paper presents a novel methodology for Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery pack simulations under actual operating conditions of an electric mining vehicle. The validated electrochemical-thermal models of Li-ion battery cells are scaled up into battery modules to emulate cell-to-cell variations within the battery pack while considering the random variability of battery cells, as well as electrical topology and thermal management of the pack. The performance of the battery pack model is evaluated using transient experimental data for the pack operating conditions within the mining environment. The simulation results show t... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: chromium exposure, environmental sciences, geothermal system, hydrogeochemical modeling, renewable sources, risk assessment
The results of total chromium determination (by ICP-OES method) in samples collected from nine working wells named GW1−GW9, exploiting geothermal water from the Podhale Trough (southern part of Poland, near the Tatra Mountains), which is used for recreational purposes, were implemented for hydrogeochemical modeling to indicate dominating chromium speciation. The reliability of the results was determined by the application of a quality assurance/quality control program, both in the laboratory and during field work. Based on chromium speciation, the risk associated with the utilization of geothermal water was calculated. The outcome showed that the concentration of Cr(III) is almost equal to the total chromium concentration (1−2 µg·L−1). Crtot concentrations were also used in a health risk assessment in the case of epidermal absorption (EDIderm) during bathing in thermal pools and four assumed scenarios in relation to the handling of geothermal water. The effect of the very low Crtot con... [more]

Machine Learning: A Useful Tool in Geomechanical Studies, a Case Study from an Offshore Gas Field
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: geomechanics, linear regression, Machine Learning, neural network, shear velocity
For a safe drilling operation with the of minimum borehole instability challenges, building a mechanical earth model (MEM) has proven to be extremely valuable. However, the natural complexity of reservoirs along with the lack of reliable information leads to a poor prediction of geomechanical parameters. Shear wave velocity has many applications, such as in petrophysical and geophysical as well as geomechanical studies. However, occasionally, wells lack shear wave velocity (especially in old wells), and estimating this parameter using other well logs is the optimum solution. Generally, available empirical relationships are being used, while they can only describe similar formations and their validation needs calibration. In this study, machine learning approaches for shear sonic log prediction were used. The results were then compared with each other and the empirical Greenberg−Castagna method. Results showed that the artificial neural network has the highest accuracy of the prediction... [more]

Electrogenic Biofilm Development Determines Charge Accumulation and Resistance to pH Perturbation
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: biofilm, carbon material, charge accumulation, microbial fuel cells, pH
The electrogenic biofilm and the bio-electrode interface are the key biocatalytic components in bioelectrochemical systems (BES) and can have a large impact on cell performance. This study used four different anodic carbons to investigate electrogenic biofilm development to determine the influence of charge accumulation and biofilm growth on system performance and how biofilm structure may mitigate against pH perturbations. Power production was highest (1.40 W/m3) using carbon felt, but significant power was also produced when felt carbon was open-circuit acclimated in a control reactor (0.95 W/m3). The influence of carbon material on electrogenic biofilm development was determined by measuring the level of biofilm growth, using sequencing to identify the microbial populations and confocal microscopy to understand the spatial locations of key microbial groups. Geobacter spp. were found to be enriched in closed-circuit operation and these were in close association with the carbon anode,... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: assembly pressure, dual hybrid microporous and gas diffusion layers with wettability distribution, low-temperature start, operation time, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell
The low-temperature start problem of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is a factor limiting their large-scale application. To improve the low-temperature start performance of a PEMFC, a novel microporous layer (MPL) and a gas diffusion layer (GDL) with planar wettability distribution, in which the hydrophilic and hydrophobic lines were arranged alternately in the in-plane direction, were investigated in this study. The influence of the dual planar-distributed wettability of the MPL and GDL on the normal temperature and low-temperature start performance of the PEMFC was investigated. Before performing the major experiment, the effect of the assembly pressure of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA), which has a significant effect on the PEMFC performance, was examined and determined to use in the experiment. PCA Forecast Averaging—Predicting Day-Ahead and Intraday Electricity Prices
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: day-ahead market, decision-making, electricity price forecasting, EPF, forecast averaging, intraday market, principal component analysis
Recently, the development in combining point forecasts of electricity prices obtained with different length of calibration windows have provided an extremely efficient and simple tool for improving predictive accuracy. However, the proposed methods are strongly dependent on expert knowledge and may not be directly transferred from one to another model or market. Hence, we consider a novel extension and propose to use principal component analysis (PCA) to automate the procedure of averaging over a rich pool of predictions. We apply PCA to a panel of over 650 point forecasts obtained for different calibration windows length. The robustness of the approach is evaluated with three different forecasting tasks, i.e., forecasting day-ahead prices, forecasting intraday ID3 prices one day in advance, and finally very short term forecasting of ID3 prices (i.e., six hours before delivery). The empirical results are compared using the Mean Absolute Error measure and Giacomini and White test for co... [more]

A Hybrid Fault Recognition Algorithm Using Stockwell Transform and Wigner Distribution Function for Power System Network with Solar Energy Penetration
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fault recognition, power system fault, solar photovoltaic energy, Stockwell transform, Wigner distribution function
Penetration level of solar photovoltaic (PV) energy in the utility network is steadily increasing. This changes the fault level and causes protection problems. Furthermore, multi-tapped structure of distribution network deployed to integrate solar PV energy to the grid and supplying loads at the same time also raised the protection challenges. Hence, this manuscript is aimed at introducing an algorithm to identify and classify the faults incident on the network of utilities where penetration level of the solar PV energy is high. This fault recognition algorithm is implemented in four steps: (1) calculation of Stockwell transform-based fault index (STFI) (2) calculation of Wigner distribution function-based fault index (WDFI) (3) calculation of combined fault index (CFI) by multiplying STFI and WDFI (4) calculation of index for ground fault (IGF) used to recognize the involvement of ground in a fault event. The STFI has the merits that its performance is least affected by the noise asso... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: decomposition analysis, electricity intensity, electricity prices, electricity production, Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index
The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors that affect CO2 emissions in the electricity generation sector in 36 OECD countries during the periods 1995−2008 and 2008−2017. This paper utilized Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index method for decomposing CO2 emission into economic activity, electricity intensity that represents demand policy effort, the share of thermal generation, the mix of thermal generation, thermal efficiency that represent supply policy efforts, and carbon emission coefficient. The results showed that EU nations achieved a higher level of CO2 reduction compared to that of non-EU nations. Regarding the policy factors, the decrease in the share of thermal generation served as the key driver, followed by the decrease in electricity intensity via improvements in energy consumption efficiency. Most non-EU countries such as South Korea, Chile, Mexico, Turkey, and Japan demonstrated an increasing trend of carbon emission during this period, which could be attributed to t... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: buildings, grid connected photovoltaics, integration of renewable technologies, microgrid, reliability, solar tracker
Although renewable technologies are progressing fast, there are still challenges such as the reliability and availability of renewable energy sources and their cost issues due to capital intensity that hinder their broad adoption. This research aims at developing a configuration-sizing approach to enhance the cost efficiency and sourcing reliability of renewable energies integrated in microgrids. To achieve this goal, various technologies were considered, such as solar PV, wind turbines, converters, and batteries for system configuration with minimization of net present cost (NPC) as the objective. Grid connection scenarios with up to 100% renewable contribution were analyzed. The results show that the integration of renewable technologies with some grid backup could reduce the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) to about half of the price of the electricity that the university purchases from the grid. Also, different kinds of solar tracker systems were studied. The outcome shows that by u... [more]

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: long short-term memory network, near real-time solar radiation forecasting, solar radiation
This paper aims to develop the long short-term memory (LSTM) network modelling strategy based on deep learning principles, tailored for the very short-term, near-real-time global solar radiation (GSR) forecasting. To build the prescribed LSTM model, the partial autocorrelation function is applied to the high resolution, 1 min scaled solar radiation dataset that generates statistically significant lagged predictor variables describing the antecedent behaviour of GSR. The LSTM algorithm is adopted to capture the short- and the long-term dependencies within the GSR data series patterns to accurately predict the future GSR at 1, 5, 10, 15, and 30 min forecasting horizons. This objective model is benchmarked at a solar energy resource rich study site (Bac-Ninh, Vietnam) against the competing counterpart methods employing other deep learning, a statistical model, a single hidden layer and a machine learning-based model. Condition-Based Maintenance for Offshore Wind Turbines Based on Support Vector Machine
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: condition-based maintenance, fault diagnosis, offshore wind turbine, support vector machine
A condition-based maintenance policy for offshore wind turbines is presented in consideration of the maintenance uncertainty and the weather effect. In this paper, the offshore wind turbine is divided into four main assemblies—namely, the rotor, gearbox, generator, and pitch system. The support vector machine classification technique is implemented to analyze the failure information, which was collected from field data in China. According to the results of fault diagnosis and prediction, the assembly that reaches the corresponding maintenance threshold will be repaired. At the same time, a maintenance opportunity occurs for the rest of the components, and an optimized plan can be determined by arranging the maintenance combination and time. The calculated results indicate that the proposed condition-based maintenance policy is beneficial to reduce the maintenance expenditure of offshore wind turbines.

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: breeding blanket, EU DEMO, nuclear fusion, system-level modelling, thermal-hydraulics, water-cooled lithium-lead (WCLL)
The European demonstration fusion power reactor (EU DEMO) tokamak will be the first European fusion device to produce electricity and to include a breeding blanket (BB). In the framework of the design of the EU DEMO BB, the analysis of the heat transfer between the inlet and outlet manifold of the coolant is needed, to assess the actual cooling capability of the water entering the cooling channels, as well as the actual coolant outlet temperature from the machine. The complex, fully three-dimensional conjugate heat transfer problem is reduced here with a novel approach to a simpler one, decoupling the longitudinal and transverse scales for the heat transport by developing correlations for a conductive heat-transfer problem. While in the longitudinal direction a standard 1D model for the heat transport by fluid advection is adopted, a set of 2D finite elements analyses are run in the transverse direction, in order to lump the 2D heat conduction effects in suitable correlations. A Novel Probabilistic Power Flow Algorithm Based on Principal Component Analysis and High-Dimensional Model Representation Techniques
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: high-dimensional model representation, point estimate method, principal component analysis, probability power flow, renewable energy source
Because the penetration level of renewable energy sources has increased rapidly in recent years, uncertainty in power system operation is gradually increasing. As an efficient tool for power system analysis under uncertainty, probabilistic power flow (PPF) is becoming increasingly important. The point-estimate method (PEM) is a well-known PPF algorithm. However, two significant defects limit the practical use of this method. One is that the PEM struggles to estimate high-order moments accurately; this defect makes it difficult for the PEM to describe the distribution of non-Gaussian output random variables (ORVs). The other is that the calculation burden is strongly related to the scale of input random variables (IRVs), which makes the PEM difficult to use in large-scale power systems. A novel approach based on principal component analysis (PCA) and high-dimensional model representation (HDMR) is proposed here to overcome the defects of the traditional PEM. PCA is applied to decrease t... [more]
