Tanana River Test Site Model Verification Using the Marine and Hydrokinetic Toolkit (MHKiT)
Emily Browning, Sterling Olson, Rebecca Fao, Adam Keester, James McVey
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ADCP, Delft3D, DOLfYN, marine energy, MHKiT, Tanana River, transect
The marine energy (ME) industry historically lacked a standardized data processing toolkit for common tasks such as data ingestion, quality control, and visualization. The marine and hydrokinetic toolkit (MHKiT) solved this issue by providing a public software deployment (open-source and free) toolkit for the ME industry to store and maintain commonly used functionality for wave, tidal, and river energy. This paper demonstrates an initial model verification study in MHKiT. Using Delft3D, a numerical model of the Tanana River Test Site (TRTS) at Nenana, Alaska was created. Field data from the site was collected using an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) at the proposed Current Energy Converter (CEC) locations. MHKiT is used to process model simulations from Delft3D and compare them to the transect data from the ADCP measurements at TRTS. The ability to use a single tool to process simulation and field data demonstrates the ease at which the ME industry can obtain results and coll... [more]
Fault Diagnosis and Its Applications to Fault Tolerant Control of a Turbojet Engine
Dong-Ju Han
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fault diagnosis, fault-tolerant control, Kalman filter, sliding mode control, turbojet engine
This paper presents a comprehensive study of model-based fault diagnosis (FD) and a fault-tolerant control (FTC) scheme for sensor and actuator faults of turbojet engines. For actuator FD, an unbiased estimation scheme with a modified Kalman filter (KF) was developed. For sensor FD, two approaches, the generalized likelihood ratio with robust KF and the pseudo actuator model with modified KF, were investigated in a comparative study. For fault detection and isolation, test statistics are commonly employed to detect fault behavior. For FTC, integral-type sliding mode control using control reconfiguration and the reconstruction of the sensor signal was adopted with the FD schemes. The effectiveness of the employed methods was demonstrated in this study and discussed with numerical simulations.

Keywords: controlling factor, methane adsorption, nanopore, shale, water adsorption
A typical feature of shale gas reservoirs is that they contain a significant amount of adsorbed gas. The evaluation and prediction of adsorbed gas play important roles in shale gas exploration and development. However, the presence of water in shale reservoirs makes this work more difficult. In recent years, research related to the occurrence and distribution of water in shales and its effect on methane adsorption have become a prominent issue. In this paper, the factors controlling water in shale nanopores and its influence on methane adsorption were systematically reviewed. It is revealed that the connate water content in shales and their water absorption capacity vary widely, and both are mainly related to the organic matter contents and properties and mineral compositions. The water absorption capacity of organic matter in shales is mainly affected by its nanopore content, structure and surface chemical properties (such as the type and amount of oxygen-containing functional groups)... A Comprehensive Analysis of Energy and Daylighting Impact of Window Shading Systems and Control Strategies on Commercial Buildings in the United States
Niraj Kunwar, Mahabir Bhandari
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: automated controls, daylighting, Energy, EnergyPlus™, shading device, window attachments
Commercial buildings consume approximately 1.9 EJ of energy in the United States, 50% of which is for heating, cooling, and lighting applications. It is estimated that windows contribute up to 34% of the energy used for heating and cooling. However, window retrofits are not often undertaken to increase energy efficiency because of the high cost and disruptive nature of window installation. Highly efficient window technologies would also need shading devices for glare prevention and visual comfort. An automated window shading system with an appropriate control strategy is a technology that can reduce energy demand, maintain occupant comfort, and enhance the aesthetics and privacy of the built environment. However, the benefits of the automated shades currently used by the shading industry are not well studied. The topic merits an analysis that will help building owners, designers and engineers, and utilities make informed decisions using knowledge of the impact of this technology on ene... [more]
Simulation of Fuzzy Control of Oxygen Flow in PEM Fuel Cells
Adam Polak
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fuzzy controller, oxygen stoichiometry, Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells
This paper presents an alternative approach to the flow control of an oxidizer in a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell system in which pure oxygen is the gas supplied to the cathode channel of the stack. The proposed oxygen flow control is implemented based on information about the current drawn from the fuel cell stack and the voltage variation in the stack. This information and a fuzzy-logic-based control algorithm are used to increase oxygen utilization in a PEM fuel cell system without a recirculation system in relation to the control, in which the oxygen flow rate is determined only in proportion to the current drawn from the stack. To verify the validity of the adopted assumptions, simulation tests of the proposed fuzzy control algorithm were conducted, for which parameters were adopted arbitrarily and determined with help of genetic algorithms. For simulation research, the proposed empirical mathematical model was used, which describes the mathematical relationship between... [more]
Demodulation of Three-Phase AC Power Transients in the Presence of Harmonic Distortion
Benjamin T. Gwynn, Raymond de Callafon
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: costas loops, demodulation, harmonic distortion, power system control, pulse width modulated inverters
Load switches in power systems may cause oscillations in active and reactive power flow. Such oscillations can be damped by synthetic inertia provided by smart inverters providing power from DC sources such as photovoltaic or battery storage. However, AC current provided by inverters is inherently non-sinusoidal, making measurements of active and reactive power subject to harmonic distortion. As a result, transient effects due to load switching can be obscured by harmonic distortion. An RLC circuit serves as a reference load. The oscillation caused by switching in the load presents as a dual-sideband suppressed-carrier signal. The carrier frequency is available via voltage data but the phase is not. Given a group of candidate signals formed from phase voltages, an algorithm based on Costas Loop that can quickly quantify the phase difference between each candidate and carrier (thus identifying the best signal for demodulation) is presented. Algorithm functionality is demonstrated in the... [more]

April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: microgrid, Model Predictive Control, photovoltaic, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sliding mode control
The primary regulation of photovoltaic (PV) systems is a current matter of research in the scientific community. In Grid-Feeding operating mode, the regulation aims to track the maximum power point in order to fully exploit the renewable energy sources and produce the amount of reactive power ordered by a hierarchically superior control level or by the local Distribution System Operator (DSO). Actually, this task is performed by Proportional−Integral−Derivative (PID)-based regulators, which are, however, affected by major drawbacks. This paper proposes a novel control architecture involving advanced control theories, like Model Predictive Control (MPC) and Sliding Mode (SM), in order to improve the overall system performance. A comparison with the conventional PID-based approach is presented and the control theories that display a better performance are highlighted.

April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: harmonic analysis, power harmonic filters, power quality, reactive power control
This article presents a method for selecting the elements of a C-type filter working with a conventional LC-type filter for compensating reactive power and filtering out higher harmonics generated by arc furnaces and ladle furnaces. The study was conducted in a steel mill supplied by a 110 kV transmission system, where higher harmonic currents and nonlinear loads were measured. A series of computer simulations were performed under various operating conditions, and an algorithm for selecting the parameters of a third-order C-type filter (for suppressing the second harmonic) and two second-order LC-type filters (for suppressing the third harmonic) was proposed. The filtering system was tested in an arc furnace with the highest rated power, and harmonics in the current spectrum were evaluated. The results of the measurements were used to analyze the effectiveness of the compensation system comprising two passive C-type and LC-type filters at different system configurations. C-type filters... [more]

Keywords: classification of SSTs, passive transformers, power electronics transformer (PET), smart grids, solid state transformer (SST)
Increase in global energy demand and constraints from fossil fuels have encouraged a growing share of renewable energy resources in the utility grid. Accordingly, an increased penetration of direct current (DC) power sources and loads (e.g., solar photovoltaics and electric vehicles) as well as the necessity for active power flow control has been witnessed in the power distribution networks. Passive transformers are susceptible to DC offset and possess no controllability when employed in smart grids. Solid state transformers (SSTs) are identified as a potential solution to modernize and harmonize alternating current (AC) and DC electrical networks and as suitable solutions in applications such as traction, electric ships, and aerospace industry. This paper provides a complete overview on SST: concepts, topologies, classification, power converters, material selection, and key aspects for design criteria and control schemes proposed in the literature. It also proposes a simple terminolog... [more]

Keywords: DC-to-DC converter, higher voltage gain, low voltage stress, non-isolated DC-to-DC converter, single switch high voltage gain converter
In the current era, the desire for high boost DC-to-DC converter development has increased. Notably, there has been voltage gain improvement without adding extra power switches, and a large number of passive components have advanced. Magnetically coupled isolated converters are suggested for the higher voltage gain. These converters use large size inductors, and thus the non-isolated traditional boost, Cuk and Sepic converters are modified to increase their gain by adding an extra switch, inductors and capacitors. These converters increase circuit complexity and become bulky. In this paper, we present a hybrid high voltage gain non-isolated single switch converter for photovoltaic applications. The proposed converter connects the standard conventional Cuk and boost converter in parallel for providing continuous current mode operation with the help of a single power switch, which gives less voltage stress on controlled switch and diodes. The proposed hybrid topology uses a single switch... [more]

Lately, the model of circular economy has gained worldwide interest. Within its concept, waste is viewed as a beneficial resource that needs to be re-introduced in the supply chains, which also requires the use of raw materials, energy, and water to be minimized. Undeniably, a strong link exists between the bioeconomy, circular economy, bioproducts, and bioenergy. In this light, in order to promote a circular economy, a range of alternative options and technologies for biowaste exploitation are currently available. In this paper, we propose a generic methodological scheme for the development of small, medium, or large-scale units of alternative biowaste treatment, with an emphasis on the production of bioenergy and other bioproducts. With the use of multi-criteria decision analysis, the model simultaneously considers environmental, economic, and social criteria to support robust decision-making. In order to validate the methodology, the latter was demonstrated in a real-world case stud... [more]

Keywords: current doubler rectifier, high-frequency link DC–DC converter, secondary phase-shift PWM control, soft-switching
A novel circuit topology for an on-board battery charger for plugged-in electric vehicles (PEVs) is presented in this paper. The proposed on-board battery charger is composed of three H-bridges on the primary side, a high-frequency transformer (HFT), and a current doubler circuit on the secondary side of the HFT. As part of an electric vehicle (EV) on-board charger, it is required to have a highly compact and efficient, lightweight, and isolated direct current (DC)−DC converter to enable battery charging through voltage/current regulation. In this work, performance characteristics of full-bridge phase-shift topology are analyzed and compared for EV charging applications. The current doubler with synchronous rectification topology is chosen due to its wider-range soft-switching availability over the full load range, and potential for a smaller and more compact size. The design employs a phase-shift full-bridge topology in the primary power stage. The current doubler with synchronous rec... [more]

Keywords: grid-forming inverter, microgrid, Model Predictive Control, primary control
Microgrids (MGs) interest is growing very fast due to the environment urgency and their capability to integrate renewable energy in a flexible way. In particular, islanded MGs in which distributed energy resources (DERs) are connected to the infrastructure with power electronic converters have attracted the interest of many researchers of both academia and industry because management, control and protection of such systems is quite different from the case of traditional networks. According to their operation mode, MGs that power electronic converters can be divided into grid-forming, grid-feeding and grid-supporting inverters. In particular, grid forming inverters are asked to impose voltage and frequency in the MG. This paper aims to propose a model predictive control (MPC) based approach for grid-forming inverters in an islanded MG. The MPC strategy is implemented because of its capability to define the optimal control actions that contemporarily track the desired reference signals a... [more]

Alberto Romero, Ricardo Chacartegui, Emanuele Garone
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: non-linear model predictive control (NLMPC), segmented packed bed, solar thermal power
Solar thermal power technologies require storage systems to mitigate the natural variability of solar irradiation. Packed bed thermal storage systems (PBTES) offer a cost-effective solution using air as heat transfer fluid and rocks as a storage medium. Compared to its alternatives, however, PBTES presents a limited flexibility of operation due to the conventional unidirectional flow, which involves the progressive reduction of the outlet temperature during discharge and thus lowers the thermodynamic efficiency of the power cycle. The present study summarizes the progress on the design and optimal operation of a novel multi-extraction PBTES, a project that aims at mitigating its typically poor operational flexibility for solar power applications. To this end, a one-dimensional model with a high spatial resolution of a PBTES was developed, which includes four intermediate outlet points along the axial direction to investigate the benefits of optimal extraction operation. Keywords: close-distance coal seam groups, digital image correlation, numerical simulation, physical similarity simulation, roadway surrounding rock, stability control
In order to solve the problems of roadway stability and easy instability under repeated mining of close-distance coal seam groups, the mechanism and control technology of surrounding rock instability under repeated mining were studied via indoor testing, field testing, physical similarity simulation experiment, and numerical simulation. The results show that the surrounding rock of roadway has low strength, low bearing capacity, and poor self-stabilization ability, and it is vulnerable to engineering disturbances and fragmentation. Affected by the disturbance under repeated mining, the roadway surrounding rock cracks are developed and the sensitivity is strong, and it is prone to large-scale loose and destroyed. The location of the roadway is unreasonable, and the maximum principal stress of the roadway is 3.1 times of the minimum principal stress, which is quite different. Thus, under a large horizontal stress, the surrounding rock undergoes long-range expansion deformation. On the ba... [more]

The electronic oxygen regulator (EOR) is a new type of aviation oxygen equipment which uses electronic servo control technology to control breathing gas pressure. In this paper, the control method of EOR was studied, and the dynamic model of the aviation oxygen system was established. A disturbance-observer-based controller (DOBC) was designed by the backstepping method to achieve the goal of stable and fast breath pressure control. The sensitivity function was proposed to describe the effect of inspiratory flow on breath pressure. Combined with the frequency domain analysis of the input sensitivity function, the parameters of the DOBC were analyzed and designed. Simulation and experiment studies were carried out to examine the control performance of DOBC in respiratory resistance and positive pressurization process under the influence of noise and time delay in the discrete electronic control system, which could meet the aviation physiology requirements. Keywords: adhesion, cement sheath, cleaning the borehole, improving the sealing of the borehole, rational selection of drilling fluids, spacer fluid, well cementing
Drilling boreholes in gas zones and in zones with the possibility of migration or gas exhalation requires a high index of well tightness. An important parameter determining the effectiveness of sealing the annular space is the adhesion of the cement sheath to the rock formation. Low values of adhesion of the cement sheath to the rock formation and to the casing surface result in the formation of uncontrolled gas flows. The lack of adhesion also reduces the stabilization of the pipe column. To obtain the required adhesion, the annular space should be properly cleaned. Thorough removal of filter cake from the drilling fluid increases adhesion and reduces gas migration from the annular space. Therefore, in this work, the authors focus on determining the effect of cleaning the annular space on the adhesion of the cement sheath to the rock formation. The results of the research work allow for further research on the modification of spacers and cement slurries in order to obtain the required... [more]
Implementation of a Resonant Converter with Topology Morphing to Achieve Bidirectional Power Flow
Bor-Ren Lin
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hybrid CLLC converter, variable switching frequency, wide DC input voltage
A DC converter with the benefits of reverse power capability, less switching loss and wide voltage operation is presented and implemented for wide input voltage applications such as fuel cell energy, photovoltaic (PV) system and DC wind power. Two full bridge resonant circuits are used in the presented converter to achieve bidirectional power flow capability and reduce switching losses on active devices. To overcome the wide input DC voltage variation problem for fuel cell energy and PV solar panel, the topology morphing between the half bridge circuit and full bridge circuit is adopted on the primary side to obtain low (or high) voltage gain under a high (or low) input voltage condition. Therefore, the stable DC voltage is controlled at the load side by using the variable switching frequency modulation. The studied hybrid CLLC converter is tested by a 1 kW prototype and the performance is verified and confirmed by experiments.

Keywords: emergency active power shortage, full-scale tests, general primary frequency control, off-grid operation, photovoltaic power plant, power flow control
The energy transition is accompanied by developing a digital decentralized low-carbon energy infrastructure with renewable-based generating plants as its main elements. In 2020, 15 photovoltaic power plants (PVPs) with an installed capacity of 364 MW were commissioned in Russia, which is 21.08% of the total installed PVP capacity of Russia. The findings of an analysis of Russia’s current regulatory and technical documents (RTD) concerning the frequency and active power flow control are presented. They indicate that all PVPs must participate in the general primary frequency control (GPFC). This requirement is due to large frequency deviations of transient processes resulting from an emergency active power shortage, which can shut down frequency-maintaining generating plants by relay or process protection devices and industrial consumers with significant damage to them. The requirements suggest full-scale tests of PVP to confirm their readiness for participation in GPFC. The program and... [more]

Keywords: Energy Conversion, mechanical switch, semi-active vibration control, serial springs, variable structure
A vibration control concept based on vibration energy conversion and storage with respect to a serial-stiffness-switch system (4S) has previously been proposed. Here, we first present a rotational electromagnetic serial-stiffness-switch system as a novel practical vibration control system for experimental validation of the concept and, furthermore, an improved control strategy for higher vibration suppression performance is also proposed. The system consists of two spring-switch elements in series, where a parallel switch can block a spring. As an alternating mechanical switch, the experimental system uses two electromagnets with a shared armature. By connecting the armature to the rotating load or the base, the electromagnets decide which of the two spiral springs is blocked, while the other is active. A switching law based on the rotation velocity of the payload is used. Modelling and building of the experimental system were carried out. The corresponding experiment and simulation we... [more]

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carrier frequency, Modelling, performance evaluation, PID control, PWM, Simulation, THD, variable structure, VSI
The huge influence of the sampling rate on the performance of the digital PID control of a voltage source inverter (VSI) is revealed. It is shown that an appropriately chosen continuous-time model of a digital controller with the PWM power converter behaves like the actual discrete-time system, which allows for a simple controller analysis and design. The variable structure nature of the inverter with both the RC rectifier and an abruptly changing resistive load with two modes of operation within the sampling period is directly taken into account. Two simulation models, a discrete-time PWM and a continuous-time, of an inverter are presented, which are used to tune the PID controller and to evaluate the control performance. The behavior of the system in both modes is explained on the basis of the root loci and frequency characteristics. The results obtained for three sampling rates: 12.8, 25.6, and 51.2 kHz, are presented and compared with an actual VSI experiment. A comparison with oth... [more]

Keywords: average current control, DC-DC converters, low frequency gain, Matlab, non-ideal converters, Simulink, stability
This paper provides a modeling approach for average current control (ACC) operating in open-loop configuration. The converters chosen are non-ideal boost and synchronous boost converters operating in continuous conduction mode (CCM). Initially, these converters are mathematically modeled considering all the non-idealities using volt-sec and amp-sec balance equations and simulated using MATLAB and Simulink. The open-loop transfer function of the switch current or inductor current (Gid) to the duty ratio is derived using the state space averaging (SSA) technique and analyzed using MATLAB/Simulink. It is observed that the Gid of the converters is highly stable in open loop. A larger magnitude resonance is observed in ideal boost and synchronous boost converters than the non-ideal converters. However, the low frequency gain and the crossover frequency remained the same. With the increase in the load resistance, higher resonance and lower low frequency gain is observed in non-ideal boost an... [more]
Chance-Constrained Based Voltage Control Framework to Deal with Model Uncertainties in MV Distribution Systems

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: chance-constrained optimization, distribution systems, model uncertainty, voltage control
In this paper, a chance-constrained (CC) framework is developed to manage the voltage control problem of medium-voltage (MV) distribution systems subject to model uncertainty. Such epistemic uncertainties are inherent in distribution system analyses given that an exact model of the network components is not available. In this context, relying on the simplified deterministic models can lead to insufficient control decisions. The CC-based voltage control framework is proposed to tackle this issue while being able to control the desired protection level against model uncertainties. The voltage control task disregarding the model uncertainties is firstly formulated as a linear optimization problem. Then, model uncertainty impacts on the above linear optimization problem are evaluated. This analysis defines that the voltage control problem subject to model uncertainties should be modelled with a joint CC formulation. The latter is accordingly relaxed to individual CC optimizations using the... [more]

Keywords: air drag coefficient, distributed nonlinear model predictive control, e-platoon, electric vehicles (EVs), energy consumption
This paper addresses the leader tracking problem for a platoon of heterogeneous autonomous connected fully electric vehicles where the selection of the inter-vehicle distance between adjacent vehicles plays a crucial role in energy consumption reduction. In this framework, we focused on the design of a cooperative driving control strategy able to let electric vehicles move as a convoy while keeping a variable energy-oriented inter-vehicle distance between adjacent vehicles which, depending on the driving situation, was reduced as much as possible to guarantee air-drag reduction, energy saving and collision avoidance. To this aim, by exploiting a distance-dependent air drag coefficient formulation, we propose a novel distributed nonlinear model predictive control (DNMPC) where the cost function was designed to ensure leader tracking performances, as well as to optimise the inter-vehicle distance with the aim of reducing energy consumption. Extensive simulation analyses, involving a comp... [more]
