Experimental Determination of the Performances during the Cold Start-Up of an Air Compressor Unit for Electric and Electrified Heavy-Duty Vehicles
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: climatic chamber, positive-displacement compressor, sliding-vane compressor, transient behavior, transport sector
Compressed air is crucial on an electric or electrified heavy-duty vehicle. The objective of this work was to experimentally determine the performance parameters of the first prototype of an electric-driven sliding-vane air compressor, specifically designed for electric and electrified heavy-duty vehicles, during the transient conditions of cold start-ups. The transient was analyzed for different thermostatic temperatures: 0 °C, −10 °C, −20 °C, and −30 °C. The air compressor unit was placed in a climatic chamber and connected to the electric grid, the water-cooling loop, and the compressed air measuring and controlling rig. The required start-up time was greater the lower the thermostatic temperature, ranging from 30 min at 0 °C to 221 min at −30 °C and depending largely on the volume of the lubricant oil filled initially. The volume flow rate of the compressed air was lower than nominal at the beginning, but it showed a step increase well beyond nominal when the oil reached 50 °C and... [more]

A Novel Predictive Control Method with Optimal Switching Sequence and Filter Resonance Suppression for Two-Stage Matrix Converter
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: input filter resonance suppression, Model Predictive Control, optimal switching strategy, two-stage matrix converter, vector modulation
This paper proposes a vector modulation-based model predictive current control strategy for a two-stage matrix converter. The switching frequency is kept constant by fixing the switching instantly. The control scheme controls the source reactive power on the input side and output currents on the output side. Besides, the advantage of the proposed strategy compared with conventional model predictive control is firstly proved using the principle of vector synthesis and the law of sines in the vector distribution area. Moreover, to ensure zero-current switching operations and reduce the switching losses, an optimal switching sequence is proposed and implemented. Furthermore, considering that the input filter resonance is easier to be inspired by the model predictive control, compared with conventional linear control strategies, an innovative active damping technique is proposed to suppress the input filter resonance. To assess the performance of the proposed method, simulation and experim... [more]

Passive Cooling Solutions to Improve Thermal Comfort in Polish Dwellings
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: dwelling, heat demand, thermal comfort, ventilation, ventilative cooling
The household sector in Poland consumes more than 25% of final energy. At the same time, residents reported dissatisfaction with the thermal conditions during the summer months. This paper details the search for passive and energy-efficient solutions to improve thermal comfort in Polish dwellings. A five-story, multi-family building was selected for this research. Analyses were conducted in apartments located on the top two floors using EnergyPlus (for thermal calculations) and CONTAM (for air exchange calculations) simulation programs for current and future climatic conditions. The stochastic behavior of people when opening windows and automatically controlled systems supplying external air to the building was considered. Airing the apartments by opening windows increased the heating demand but reduced the number of thermal discomfort hours by over 90%. The degree of airing by opening windows depends on residents opening their windows; therefore, a mechanical supply of external air co... [more]

Improved Virtual Inertia of PMSG-Based Wind Turbines Based on Multi-Objective Model-Predictive Control
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: dynamic weight coefficient, multi-objective model predictive control, permanent magnet synchronous generators, virtual inertia
In the case of a high penetration rate of wind energy conversion systems, the conventional virtual inertia control of permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSG) has an insufficient support capability for system frequency, leading to an unstable system frequency and a slower response. Considering the finite control set model predictive control has multi-objective regulation capabilities and efficient tracking capabilities, and an improved multi-objective model-predictive control is proposed in this paper for PMSG-based wind turbines with virtual inertia based on its mathematical model. With the prediction model, the optimal control of the current and the frequency of the PMSG-based wind turbines can be obtained. Since the shaft torque changes rapidly under high virtual inertia, shaft oscillation may occur under this scenario. To address this problem, the electromagnetic torque is set as an additional optimization objective, which effectively suppresses the oscillation. Furthermore,... [more]

A New Model Predictive Control Method for Eliminating Hydraulic Oscillation and Dynamic Hydraulic Imbalance in a Complex Chilled Water System
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: chilled water system, high-rise building, hydraulic oscillation, Model Predictive Control, pipe network
To enhance the energy performance of a central air-conditioning system, an effective control method for the chilled water system is always essential. However, it is a real challenge to distribute exact cooling energy to multiple terminal units in different floors via a complex chilled water network. To mitigate hydraulic imbalance in a complex chilled water system, many throttle valves and variable-speed pumps are installed, which are usually regulated by PID-based controllers. Due to the severe hydraulic coupling among the valves and pumps, the hydraulic oscillation phenomena often occur while using those feedback-based controllers. Based on a data-calibrated water distribution model which can accurately predict the hydraulic behaviors of a chilled water system, a new Model Predictive Control (MPC) method is proposed in this study. The proposed method is validated by a real-life chilled water system in a 22-floor hotel. By the proposed method, the valves and pumps can be regulated saf... [more]

Cascaded Smart Gate Drivers for Modular Multilevel Converters Control: A Decentralized Voltage Balancing Algorithm
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cascaded gate drivers, decentralized control, distributed galvanic insulation (DGI), modular multilevel converter (MMC), smart gate-drivers, voltage balancing algorithm (VBA)
Recent Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) topology allows for drastic improvements in power electronic conversion such as higher energy quality, lower power semiconductors electrical stress, decreased Electro-Magnetic Interferences (EMI), and reduced switching losses. MMC is widely used in High Voltage Direct-Current (HVDC) transmissions as it offers, theoretically, no voltage limit. However, its control electronic structure is not modular itself. Especially, the insulation voltage between the submodule gate drivers’ primaries and secondaries depends on the number of submodules. The converter voltage levels cannot be increased without designing all gate driver isolations again. To solve that issue, the novel concept of distributed galvanic insulation is introduced for multilevel converters. The submodule’s gate drivers are daisy-chained, which naturally reduces the insulation voltage to the submodule capacitor voltage, regardless of the number of submodules. The MMC becomes truly modul... [more]

A Study on the Energy Reduction Measures of Data Centers through Chilled Water Temperature Control and Water-Side Economizer
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: chilled water temperature, data center, energy cut-off, HVAC, water-side economizer
The degree of integration of IT devices and consumption of cooling energy are consistently increasing owing to developments in the data center industry. Hence, to ensure the smooth operation and fault prevention of IT devices, the energy consumption of cooling systems has increased, leading to active research on improvements in cooling system performance for reducing energy consumption. This study examines the reduction in cooling energy consumption using a simulation by applying chilled water control and a water-side economizer (WSE) system to enhance the cooling system efficiency. The simulation results showed that the energy consumption was reduced by 1.8% when the chilled water temperature was set to 11 °C in a conventional system and by up to 19.6% when WSE was also applied. Furthermore, when the changes in chilled water temperature were applied for efficient operation of WSE, the energy consumption was reduced by up to 30.1% compared to that in conventional energy systems.

Flexibility Control in Autonomous Demand Response by Optimal Power Tracking
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: autonomous optimization, demand response, Energy Storage, power tracking, real-time pricing
In the regime of incentive-based autonomous demand response, time dependent prices are typically used to serve as signals from a system operator to consumers. However, this approach has been shown to be problematic from various perspectives. We clarify these shortcomings in a geometric way and thereby motivate the use of power signals instead of price signals. The main contribution of this paper consists of demonstrating in a standard setting that power tracking signals can control flexibilities more efficiently than real-time price signals. For comparison by simulation, German renewable energy production and German standard load profiles are used for daily production and demand profiles, respectively. As for flexibility, an energy storage system with realistic efficiencies is considered. Most critically, the new approach is able to induce consumptions on the demand side that real-time pricing is unable to induce. Moreover, the pricing approach is outperformed with regards to imbalance... [more]

Application of Matrix VFD for Power Factor Improvement in LED Lighting Sources Loaded Power Distribution Lines
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: induction motor, matrix converter, power factor, reactive power
In this paper, a novel approach to matrix-converter-based variable frequency drives is presented. It is proposed that these drives are used to provide or draw out reactive power from the power distribution line, keeping the power factor close to unit and, simultaneously, performing their primary function of motor powering and speed control. This application of matrix-converter-based variable frequency drives is required due to the need to compensate for capacitive reactive power generated by light emitting diode lighting devices. In this study, the reactive power compensation range of the matrix-converter-based variable frequency drive is determined, and a method is proposed to extend the compensation range.

Optimized Energy Control Scheme for Electric Drive of EV Powertrain Using Genetic Algorithms
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: drive energy consumption, EV powertrain, genetic algorithms, induction machine drive, linear parameter varying control
Automotive applications often experience conflicting-objective optimization problems focusing on performance parameters that are catered through precisely developed cost functions. Two such conflicting objectives which substantially affect the working of traction machine drive are maximizing its speed performance and minimizing its energy consumption. In case of an electric vehicle (EV) powertrain, drive energy is bounded by battery dynamics (charging and capacity) which depend on the consumption of drive voltage and current caused by driving cycle schedules, traffic state, EV loading, and drive temperature. In other words, battery consumption of an EV depends upon its drive energy consumption. A conventional control technique improves the speed performance of EV at the cost of its drive energy consumption. However, the proposed optimized energy control (OEC) scheme optimizes this energy consumption by using robust linear parameter varying (LPV) control tuned by genetic algorithms whic... [more]

A Bus-Sectionalized Hybrid AC/DC Microgrid: Concept, Control Paradigm, and Implementation
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bus section, hierarchical control, hybrid AC/DC microgrid, multimode operation, seamless mode switching
In the last several years, the coordination control of hybrid AC/DC microgrids (HMGs) has been gaining increasingly more attention. However, most of these discussions are focused on single-bus HMGs whose AC or DC bus is not sectionalized by AC or DC breakers. Compared with these single-bus HMGs, the bus-sectionalized HMG has more flexible topologies, more diverse operation modes, and consequently higher service reliability. However, meanwhile, these benefits also bring challenges to the stable operation of bus-sectionalized HMGs, particularly for mode switching. Relying on the national HMG demonstrative project in Shaoxing, China, this paper makes efforts to present the hierarchical control paradigm of a typical bus-sectionalized HMG toward standardization. The test results demonstrate that the proposed system provides seamless switching and uninterrupted power supply without controller reconfiguration among different operation modes. The operational data are also brought forth and ana... [more]

Optimal Energy Management for Hybrid Electric Vehicles Based on Dynamic Programming and Receding Horizon
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: dynamic programming, electrified powertrain, energy management strategy, hybrid vehicles, look-ahead control, optimal control, receding horizon
Fuel consumption and emissions in parallel hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are directly linked to the way the load request to the wheels is managed between the internal combustion engine and the electric motor powered by the battery. A significant reduction in both consumption and emissions can be achieved by optimally controlling the power split on an entire driving mission (full horizon—FH). However, the entire driving path is often not predictable in real applications, hindering the fulfillment of the advantages gained through such an approach. An improvement can be achieved by exploiting more information available onboard, such as those derived from Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and vehicle connectivity (V2X). With this aim, the present work presents the design and verification, in a simulated environment, of an optimized controller for HEVs energy management, based on dynamic programming (DP) and receding horizon (RH) approaches. Fast Frequency Support from Hybrid Wind Power Plants Using Supercapacitors
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fast frequency reserve, frequency controller, frequency stability, hybrid wind power plants, supercapacitors, system inertia
The concept of hybrid wind power plants (HWPPs) that consist of wind, solar and batteries has received a lot of attention, since HWPPs provide a number of advantages thanks to the complementary nature of wind and solar energy and the flexibility of batteries. Nevertheless, converter-based technologies, as interfaces of HWPPs to the utility grid, contribute to the reduction of total system inertia, making the system more volatile and creating additional threats to frequency stability. To address these operational challenges, the capability of supercapacitors (SCs) to provide fast frequency reserve (FFR) is explored in this paper to enhance the frequency response of the HWPP. Two topologies for integrating SCs into the HWPP are proposed: (1) connecting SC to the DC link of wind turbine (WT) via a DC-DC converter interface, (2) directly connecting SC to the DC link of WT without converter interface. Frequency controllers at the asset level are proposed for these two topologies accordingly... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Marx generator, pulsed power, SiC-MOSFET, solid-state
The paper introduces a new design of Marx generator based on modular stages using Silicon Carbide MOSFETs (SiC-MOSFET) aimed to be used in biomedical applications. In this process, living cells are treated with intense nanosecond Pulsed Electrical Field (nsPEF). The electric field dose should be controlled by adjusting the pulse parameters such as amplitude, repetition rate and pulse-width. For this purpose, the structure of the proposed generator enables negative pulses with a quasi-rectangular shape, controllable amplitude, pulse-width and repetition-rate. April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: combined heat and power plant, Flügel formula, heat balance characteristic of turbine, heating extraction steam flow rate, information fusion, soft sensor
Heating extraction steam (HEXTR) flow rate is the key parameter to determine the heat load of a combined heat and power (CHP) plant and the safe operation area of the steam turbine of CHP plant. Due to the difficulty of direct measurement, a soft measurement method of this flow rate is proposed. First, three calculation methods based on different principles are given: the Flügel formula of the steam turbine method, the butterfly valve flow characteristics method, and the improvement of heat balance characteristic of the turbine method. Then, a soft-sensing method through frequency complementary information fusion is proposed to combine the advantages of the three methods. The specific fusion algorithm uses Flügel formula of the turbine as a static model, the heat balance characteristic of the turbine to correct the coefficient in the model, and the butterfly valve characteristic to realize dynamic compensation. Finally, the proposed soft sensor is applied in the monitoring system of a... [more]

A New GaN-Based Device, P-Cascode GaN HEMT, and Its Synchronous Buck Converter Circuit Realization
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: D-mode GaN HEMT, P-Cascode GaN HEMT, single gate driver, synchronous buck converter
This paper attempts to disclose a new GaN-based device, called the P-Cascode GaN HEMT, which uses only a single gate driver to control both the D-mode GaN and PMOS transistors. The merit of this synchronous buck converter is that it can reduce the circuit complexity of the synchronous buck converter, which is widely used to provide non-isolated power for low-voltage and high-current supply to system chips; therefore, the power conversion efficiency of the converter can be improved. In addition, the high side switch using a single D-mode GaN HEMT, which has no body diode, can prevent the bi-directional flow and thus reduce the power loss and cost compared to a design based on a series of two opposite MOSFETs. The experiment shows that the proposed P-Cascode GaN HEMT efficiency is above 98% when it operates at 500 kHz with 6 W output. With the input voltage at 12 V, the synchronous buck converter provides an adjustable regulated output voltage from 1.2 V to 10 V while delivering a maximu... [more]

A Current Sensor Fault Tolerant Control Strategy for PMSM Drive Systems Based on Cri Markers
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: current sensor, fault detector, FOC, FTC, PMSM
The paper describes a vector-controlled fault tolerant control (FTC) structure for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. As a control algorithm, the classical field oriented control was applied. For the proper operation of this drive, minimum two current sensors are necessary, however, in the FTC drives additional redundant transducers are applied. Each measuring sensor, including current sensors, are susceptible to damage and can lead to unstable operation of the drive. The presented control structure, with a diagnostic and compensation system, is robust to the typical current sensor faults—lack of signal, intermittent signal, variable gain, signal noise and signal saturation. The fault detection algorithm is based on the signal method. The fault diagnostic system is tested in two control algorithms—the scalar control and vector control ones—to demonstrate the transient of the faulted signals, detection signals and detection time. Estimation and control of wheel slip is a critical consideration in preventing loss of traction, minimizing power consumptions, and reducing soil disturbance. An approach to wheel slip estimation and control, which is robust to sensor noises and modeling imperfection, has been investigated in this study. The proposed method uses a simplified form of wheels longitudinal dynamic and the measurement of wheel and vehicle speeds to estimate and control the optimum slip. The longitudinal wheel forces were estimated using a robust sliding mode observer. A straightforward and simple interpolation method, which involves the use of Burckhardt tire model, instantaneous values of wheel slip, and the estimate of longitudinal force, was used to determine the optimum slip ratio that guarantees maximum friction coefficient between the wheel and the road surface. This work deals with metaheuristic optimization algorithms to derive the best parameters for the Gaussian Adaptive PID controller. This controller represents a multimodal problem, where several distinct solutions can achieve similar best performances, and metaheuristics optimization algorithms can behave differently during the optimization process. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: AP1000®, homogenized cross-sections, MPACT, neutronics, pressurized water reactor, sensitivity analysis, two-step method
In the two-step method for nuclear reactor simulation, lattice physics calculations are performed to compute homogenized cross-sections for a variety of burnups and lattice configurations. A nodal code is then used to perform full-core analysis using the pre-calculated homogenized cross-sections. One source of uncertainty introduced in this method is that the lattice configuration or depletion conditions typically do not match a pre-calculated one from the lattice physics simulations. Therefore, some interpolation model must be used to estimate the homogenized cross-sections in the nodal code. This current study provides a methodology for sensitivity analysis to quantify the impact of state variables on the homogenized cross-sections. This methodology also allows for analyses of the historical effect that the state variables have on homogenized cross-sections. An application of this methodology on a lattice for the Westinghouse AP1000® reactor is presented where coolant density, fuel t... [more]
