Centralized and Decentralized Optimal Control of Variable Speed Heat Pumps
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive control, decentralized control, demand response, optimal control, parameter estimation, thermostatically controlled load
Utility service providers are often challenged with the synchronization of thermostatically controlled loads. Load synchronization, as a result of naturally occurring and demand-response events, has the potential to damage power distribution equipment. Because thermostatically controlled loads constitute most of the power consumed by the grid at any given time, the proper control of such devices can lead to significant energy savings and improved grid stability. The contribution of this paper is the development of an optimal control algorithm for commonly used variable speed heat pumps. By means of selective peer-to-peer communication, our control architecture allows for the regulation of home temperatures while simultaneously minimizing aggregate power consumption, and aggregate load volatility. An optimal centralized controller is also explored and compared against its decentralized counterpart.

Steam Turbine Rotor Stress Control through Nonlinear Model Predictive Control
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Nonlinear Model Predictive Control, rotor stress control, steam turbine startup
The current flexibility of the energy market requires operating steam turbines that have challenging operation requirements such as variable steam conditions and higher number of startups. This article proposes an advanced control system based on the Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) technique, which allows to speed up the start-up of steam turbines and increase the energy produced while maintaining rotor stress as a constraint variable. A soft sensor for the online calculation of rotor stress is presented together with the steam turbine control logic. Then, we present how the computational cost of the controller was contained by reducing the order of the formulation of the optimization problem, adjusting the scheduling of the optimizer routine, and tuning the parameters of the controller itself. The performance of the control system has been compared with respect to the PI Controller architecture fed by the soft sensor results and with standard pre-calculated curves. The contr... [more]

Intelligent Transition Control between Grid-Connected and Standalone Modes of Three-Phase Grid-Integrated Distributed Generation Systems
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: grid synchronization, islanding detection, phase-locked loop, seamless transition, transition control
This paper proposes an intelligent seamless transition controller for smooth transition between grid-connected (GC) and standalone modes of distributed generation (DG) units in the grid. The development of this seamless controller contributes to two main processes in the transition modes: the synchronization process and an islanding process. For the synchronization process, the stationary reference frame phase-locked loop (SRF-PLL) associated with the voltage source inverter (VSI) is modified using the frequency, voltage deviation, and phase angle information. Furthermore, the islanding process is classified as intentional and unintentional islanding scenarios for achieving efficient transition control. Here, the intentional islanding process is achieved with the information that is available in the system due to the planned disconnection. For the unintentional islanding process, a fuzzy inference system (FIS) is used to modify the conventional droop control using the information of ch... [more]

AUSTRET: An Automated Step Response Testing Tool for Building Automation and Control Systems
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: auditing, building automation, control, software, step response, test
Building energy consumption is still one of the main contributions to global carbon emissions. With the overall digitalization in the building sector, building automation and control systems (BACS) are to play a more important and key role in improving the building sector performance. A well-designed BACS at the building design phase with a high level of control functionalities is not a guarantee for efficient building operation and successful control and management strategies in the operational phase. Thus, a systematic automated initial and retro-commissioning process is key to test the performance of the automation system and the response of the integrated HVAC systems. This is an arduous and time-consuming task susceptible to human errors. As an alternative, the current study proposes a methodological framework to automate step response testing of BACS and to optimize the different steps of this process in a cost-effective way. In addition to newly built buildings, the framework ca... [more]

FEHCA: A Fault-Tolerant Energy-Efficient Hierarchical Clustering Algorithm for Wireless Sensor Networks
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, fault tolerance, hierarchical clustering, WSN
Technological advancements have led to increased confidence in the design of large-scale wireless networks that comprise small energy constraint devices. Despite the boost in technological advancements, energy dissipation and fault tolerance are amongst the key deciding factors while designing and deploying wireless sensor networks. This paper proposes a Fault-tolerant Energy-efficient Hierarchical Clustering Algorithm (FEHCA) for wireless sensor networks (WSNs), which demonstrates energy-efficient clustering and fault-tolerant operation of cluster heads (CHs). It treats CHs as no special node but equally prone to faults as normal sensing nodes of the cluster. The proposed scheme addresses some of the limitations of prominent hierarchical clustering algorithms, such as the randomized election of the cluster heads after each round, which results in significant energy dissipation; non-consideration of the residual energy of the sensing nodes while selecting cluster heads, etc. It utilize... Wavy Walls, a Passive Way to Control the Transition to Turbulence. Detailed Simulation and Physical Explanation
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: direct numerical simulation, flow control, transition, turbulence, wavy wall
Inducing spanwise motions in the vicinity of solid boundaries alters the energy, mass and/or momentum transfer. Under some conditions, these motions are such that drag is reduced and/or transition to turbulence is delayed. There are several possibilities to induce those spanwise motions, be it through active imposition a predefined velocity distribution at the walls or by careful design of the wall shape, which corresponds to passive control. In this contribution, we investigate the effect that wavy walls might have on delaying transition to turbulence. Direct Numerical Simulation of both planar and wavy-walled channel flows at laminar and turbulent regimes are conducted. A pseudo laminar regime that remains stable until a Reynolds number 20% higher that the critical is found for the wavy-walled simulations. Dynamic Mode Decomposition applied to the simulation data reveals that in these configurations, modes with wavelength and frequency compatible with the surface undulation pattern ap... [more]

Enhanced Boost Factor for Three-Level Quasi-Switched Boost T-Type Inverter
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: quasi-switched boost, shoot-through, single-stage inverter, T-type inverter, third harmonic injection, three-level inverter
A new modulation strategy has been introduced in this paper in order to enhance the boost factor for the three-level quasi-switched boost T-type inverter (3L-qSBT2I). Under this approach, the component rating of power devices is significantly decreased. Moreover, the use of a larger boost factor produces a smaller shoot-through current. This benefit leads to reducing the conduction loss significantly. Furthermore, the neutral voltage unbalance is also considered. The duty cycle of two active switches of a quasi-switched boost (qSB) network is redetermined based on actual capacitor voltages to recovery balance condition. Noted that the boost factor will not be affected by the proposed capacitor voltage balance strategy. The proposed method is taken into account to be compared with other previous studies. The operation principle and overall control strategy for this configuration are also detailed. The simulation and experiment are implemented with the help of PSIM software and laborator... [more]

Keywords: automatic process control, Biomass, combustion, emissions, particulate matter, pellet burner, TLUD
In this study, a small-scale (4.7 kWfuel) biomass burner based on “top-lit updraft” (TLUD) technology with automatic process control was developed for process heat generation. The combustion experiments were performed using wood pellets to gain more insights on the process, its repeatability and the behaviors of the emitted gaseous and particulate emissions under different combustion phases. The emission values were compared with similar small-scale combustion technologies as well as the emission limits defined in official regulations. The results showed that the average emissions (based on standardized 13 vol. % O2 content in the dry flue gas (STP)) over the entire process from start-up to switch-off were 29.4 mg/m3 for CO, 80 mg/m3 for NOx, and 3.6 mg/m3 for total particle matter (TPM) measured within the hot gas. These results were below the official limits for wood-fueled small-scale systems. The developed process control approach resulted in very low residual O2 content in the flu... [more]

Small-Signal Model and Stability Control for Grid-Connected PV Inverter to a Weak Grid
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: eigenvalues, PLL (Phase-Locked Loop), small signal stability, VSC (voltage source converter), weak grid
This paper presents a small signal stability analysis to assess the stability issues facing PV (photovoltaic) inverters connected to a weak grid. It is revealed that the cause of the transient instabilities, either high-frequency or low-frequency oscillations, is dominated by the outer control loops and the grid strength. However, most challenging oscillations are low-frequency oscillations induced by coupling interaction between the outer loop controller and PLL (Phase-Locked Loop) when the inverter is connected to a weak grid. Therefore, the paper proposes a low-frequency damping methodology in order to enhance the high system integration, while maintaining the stability of the system. The control method uses a DC link voltage error to modulate the reference reactive current. The proposed control reduces the low-frequency coupling between the DVC (DC link voltage controller), AVC (AC voltage controller) and PLL (Phase-locked loop). According to this study’s results, the performance c... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: demand response, demand side management, distribution grids, electric vehicles, voltage violations, voltage-based droop control
If left uncontrolled, electric vehicle charging poses severe challenges to distribution grid operation. Resulting issues are expected to be mitigated by charging control. In particular, voltage-based charging control, by relying only on the local measurements of voltage at the point of connection, provides an autonomous communication-free solution. The controller, attached to the charging equipment, compares the measured voltage to a reference voltage and adapts the charging power using a droop control characteristic. We present a systematic study of the voltage-based droop control method for electric vehicles to establish the usability of the method for all the currently available residential electric vehicle charging possibilities considering a wide range of electric vehicle penetrations. Accurate building energy prediction is useful in various applications starting from building energy automation and management to optimal storage control. However, vulnerabilities should be considered when designing building energy prediction models, as intelligent attackers can deliberately influence the model performance using sophisticated attack models. These may consequently degrade the prediction accuracy, which may affect the efficiency and performance of the building energy management systems. In this paper, we investigate the impact of bi-level poisoning attacks on regression models of energy usage obtained from household appliances. Furthermore, an effective countermeasure against the poisoning attacks on the prediction model is proposed in this paper. Attacks and defenses are evaluated on a benchmark dataset. Experimental results show that an intelligent cyber-attacker can poison the prediction model to manipulate the decision. However, our proposed solution successfully ensu... [more]

Unbalanced Current Reduction Method of Microgrid Based on Power Conversion System Operation
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: dual current control, ESS, microgrid, PSCAD/EMTDC, redundancy
In isolated areas such as islands with small power grids, the BESS (Battery energy storage system) can supply the standard voltage and frequency to the power system to achieve 100% of renewable sharing. In addition, the installation of additional BESS may be required in the microgrid due to technical limitations such as redundant operation and manufacturer specifications. Thus, the BESSs in a microgrid can be split into main and sub BESSs which play a role as the main source and auxiliary services, respectively. Generally, the ratio of unbalance current in microgrid system tends to be high, because of inherently unbalanced single phase load distribution. However, because the capacity of BESS is calculated under balanced conditions, the PCS (Power conversion system) of BESS may stop protecting its switching device from a single phase overcurrent in actual operation. From this perspective, this paper proposes that the sub BESSs perform dual current control to supply the unbalanced curren... [more]

An Approach to Analyze Diagnosis Errors in Advanced Main Control Room Operations Using the Cause-Based Decision Tree Method
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: advanced MCR, CBDT, control room, diagnosis, human failure event, human reliability
Advancements in the nuclear industry have led to the development of fully digitized main control rooms (MCRs)—often termed advanced MCRs—for newly built nuclear power plants (NPPs). Diagnosis is a major part of the cognitive activity in NPP MCRs. Advanced MCRs are expected to improve the working environment and reduce human error, especially during the diagnosis of unexpected scenarios. However, with the introduction of new types of tasks and errors by digital MCRs, a new method to analyze the diagnosis errors in these new types of MCRs is required. Task analysis for operator diagnosis in an advanced MCR based on emergency operation was performed to determine the error modes. The cause-based decision tree (CBDT) method—originally developed for analog control rooms—was then revised to a modified CBDT (MCBDT) based on the error mode categorizations. This work examines the possible adoption of the MCBDT method for the evaluation of diagnosis errors in advanced MCRs. We have also provided... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control design, discrete-time systems, disturbance compensation, reaching law approach, sliding mode control, trajectory generator
This study considers the problem of energetical efficiency in switching type sliding mode control of discrete-time systems. The aim of this work is to reduce the quasi-sliding mode band-width and, as follows, the necessary control input, through an application of a new type of time-varying sliding hyperplane in quasi-sliding mode control of sampled time systems. Although time-varying sliding hyperplanes are well known to provide insensitivity to matched external disturbances and uncertainties of the model in the whole range of motion for continuous-time systems, their application in the discrete-time case has never been studied in detail. Therefore, this paper proposes a sliding surface, which crosses the system’s representative point at the initial step and then shifts in the state space according to the pre-generated demand profile of the sliding variable. Next, a controller for a real perturbed plant is designed so that it drives the system’s representative point to its reference po... [more]

Adaptive On-Time Buck Converter with Wave Tracking Reference Control for Output Regulation Accuracy

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: buck converter, constant on-time, efficiency, output DC offset
A ripple-based constant on-time (RBCOT) buck converter with a virtual inductor current ripple (VICR) control can relax the stability constraint of large equivalent series resistance (ESR) at an output capacitor, but output regulation accuracy deteriorates due to the issue with output DC offset. Thus, this paper proposes a wave tracking reference (WTR) control to improve converter stability with low ESR and concurrently eliminate output DC offset on the regulated output voltage. Moreover, an adaptive on-time (AOT) circuit is presented to suppress the switching frequency variation with load current changes in continuous conduction mode. A prototype chip was fabricated in 0.35 µm CMOS technology for validation. The measurement results demonstrate that the maximum output DC offset is 4.1 mV and the output voltage ripple is as small as 3 mV. Using solar power for industrial process heat is an increasing trend to fight against climate change thanks to renewable heat. Process heat demand and solar flux can both present intermittency issues in industrial systems, therefore solar systems with storage introduce a degree of freedom on which optimization, on a mathematical basis, can be performed. As the efficiency of solar thermal receivers varies as a function of temperature and solar flux, it seems natural to consider an optimization on the operating temperature of the solar field. In this paper, a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) algorithm is developed to optimize the operating temperature in a system consisting of a concentrated solar thermal field with storage, hybridized with a boiler. Behavioural Change in Green Transportation: Micro-Economics Perspectives and Optimization Strategies

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: demand response, elasticity, electric vehicle charging, indirect control, Optimization
The increasing demand for Electric Vehicle (EV) charging is putting pressure on the power grids and capacities of charging stations. This work focuses on how to use indirect control through price signals to level out the load curve in order to avoid the power consumption from exceeding these capacities. We propose mathematical programming models for the indirect control of EV charging that aim at finding an optimal set of price signals to be sent to the drivers based on price elasticities. The objective is to satisfy the demand for a given price structure, or minimize the curtailment of loads, when there is a shortage of capacity. The key contribution is the use of elasticity matrices through which it is possible to estimate the EV drivers’ reactions to the price signals. As real-world data on relating the elasticity values to the EV driver’s behaviour are currently non-existent, we concentrate on sensitivity analysis to test how different assumptions on elasticities affect the optimal...
