Štefan Bojnec, Alan Križaj
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: decision support systems, electricity consumption, electricity market liberalization, electricity market operation, electricity prices, European Energy Exchange, European Union, households, industry, Slovenia
This paper analyzes electricity markets in Slovenia during the specific period of market deregulation and price liberalization. The drivers of electricity prices and electricity consumption are investigated. The Slovenian electricity markets are analyzed in relation with the European Energy Exchange (EEX) market. Associations between electricity prices on the one hand, and primary energy prices, variation in air temperature, daily maximum electricity power, and cross-border grid prices on the other hand, are analyzed separately for industrial and household consumers. Monthly data are used in a regression analysis during the period of Slovenia’s electricity market deregulation and price liberalization. Empirical results show that electricity prices achieved in the EEX market were significantly associated with primary energy prices. In Slovenia, the prices for daily maximum electricity power were significantly associated with electricity prices achieved on the EEX market. The increases i... [more]

Keywords: Fault Detection, fault tolerance, multilevel inverters, power electronics
As the applications of power electronic converters increase across multiple domains, so do the associated challenges. With multilevel inverters (MLIs) being one of the key technologies used in renewable systems and electrification, their reliability and fault ride-through capabilities are highly desirable. While using a large number of semiconductor components that are the leading cause of failures in power electronics systems, fault tolerance against switch open-circuit faults is necessary, especially in remote applications with substantial maintenance penalties or safety-critical operation. In this paper, a fault-tolerant asymmetric reduced device count multilevel inverter topology producing an 11-level output under healthy conditions and capable of operating after open-circuit fault in any switch is presented. Nearest-level control (NLC) based Pulse width modulation is implemented and is updated post-fault to continue operation at an acceptable power quality. Reliability analysis of... [more]

Keywords: eccentricity, electric machine, fault diagnosis, rotor
Research on the modeling and fault diagnosis of rotor eccentricities has been conducted during the past two decades. A variety of diagnostic theories and methods have been proposed based on different mechanisms, and there are reviews following either one type of electric machines or one type of eccentricity. Nonetheless, the research routes of modeling and diagnosis are common, regardless of machine or eccentricity types. This article tends to review all the possible modeling and diagnostic approaches for all common types of electric machines with eccentricities and provide suggestions on future research roadmap. The paper indicates that a reliable low-cost non-intrusive real-time online visualized diagnostic method is the trend. Observer-based diagnostic strategies are thought promising for the continued research.

Keywords: CBM strategy, condition monitoring, copper corrosion, Fault Detection, transformer failures
The negative impacts of catastrophic fire and explosion accidents due to copper corrosion problems of oil-filled electrical transformers are still in the spotlight due to a lack of effective methods for early fault detection. To address this gap, a condition monitoring (CM) procedure that can detect such problems in the initial stage is proposed in this paper. The suggested CM procedure is based on identified measurable variables, which are the relevant by-products of the corrosion reaction, and utilizes an Early Fault Diagnosis (EFD) model to detect and solve the copper corrosion problems. The EFD model includes a fault trend chart that can track a fault progression during the useful life of transformers. The purpose of this paper is to verify and validate the effectiveness of the suggested CM procedure by an empirical study in a power plant. The result of applying this procedure was early detection of copper corrosion problems in two transformers with suspected copper corrosion propa... [more]
On the Physical Nature of Frequency Control Problems of Induction Motor Drives
Kodkin Vladimir, Anikin Alexander
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: frequency control, induction motor drives, nonlinear dynamical systems, sensorless control, vector control
This article considers the possibility of connecting the problems of the engineering synthesis of frequency control systems for induction motor drives (IMD) with the theory of the identification of IMD based on the equations of a generalized AC electric machine. The article presents experimental studies of load parrying in IMD with vector (VC) and scalar (SC) controls. These results indicate the absence of fundamental advantages in a drive with VC. This advantage should manifest in a more efficient formation of the moment and fast transients. A method was proposed for describing IMD by nonlinear transfer functions, making it possible to formulate the principle of the correction of IMD and a method for assessing their efficiency. The article shows that the correction based on the proposed nonlinear transfer functions of the induction motor is much more efficient than the traditional VC, which was confirmed by detailed experiments and modeling. The most important results are given in the... [more]

Keywords: flyback photovoltaic micro-inverter, flyback transformer, isolated single-stage inverter, simple control strategy
The single-stage flyback Photovoltaic (PV) micro-inverter is considered as a simple and small in size topology but requires expensive digital microcontrollers such as Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) or Digital Signal Processor (DSP) to increase the system efficiency, this would increase the cost of the overall system. To solve this problem, based on a single-stage flyback structure, this paper proposed a low cost and simple analog-digital control scheme. This control scheme is implemented using a low cost ATMega microcontroller built in the Arduino Uno board and some analog operational amplifiers. First, the single-stage flyback topology is analyzed theoretically and then the design consideration is obtained. Second, a 120 W prototype was developed in the laboratory to validate the proposed control. To prove the effectiveness of this control, we compared the cost price, overall system efficiency, and THD values of the proposed results with the results obtained by the literature. S... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fractional delay (FD) filter, frequency adaptive (FA), Newton structure, repetitive control (RC), weak grid
Repetitive control (RC) is gradually used in inverters tied with weak grid. To achieve the zero steady-state error tracking of inverter current and compensate the harmonic distortion caused by frequency fluctuation, a frequency adaptive (FA) control scheme for LCL-type inverter connected with weak grid is proposed. This scheme adopts a proportional resonance (PR) controller in parallel with RC (PRRC) to overcome the disadvantages caused by RC inherent one-cycle time delay. A fractional delay (FD) filter based on the Newton structure is proposed to approximate the fraction item of fs/f, where fs and f are sample frequency and grid frequency, respectively. The structure of the proposed FD filter is relatively simple; moreover, coefficients of the filter maintain constant so as not to need online tuning even when grid frequency fluctuates, which decreases the computational burden considerably. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed FA control scheme, named as Newton-FAPRRC, are... [more]

Keywords: frequency stability, grid-following, grid-forming, inverter-based resource, PLL, RoCoF, virtual inertia
Inertia reduction due to inverter-based resource (IBR) penetration deteriorates power system stability, which can be addressed using virtual inertia (VI) control. There are two types of implementation methods for VI control: grid-following (GFL) and grid-forming (GFM). There is an apparent difference among them for the voltage regulation capability, because the GFM controls IBR to act as a voltage source and GFL controls it to act as a current source. The difference affects the performance of the VI control function, because stable voltage conditions help the inertial response to contribute to system stability. However, GFL can provide the voltage control function with reactive power controllability, and it can be activated simultaneously with the VI control function. This study analyzes the performance of GFL-type VI control with a voltage control function for frequency stability improvement. The results show that the voltage control function decreases the voltage variation caused by... [more]

Keywords: current sensor, current transformer, hall sensor, low-cost sensor, wide bandwidth sensor
This paper presents the overall concept of a wideband and cost-effective current sensor. The sensor consists of a paralleled Hall-based current sensor (LEM) and a wideband current transformer (CT). A significant improvement of the band range and the moderate cost of the proposed sensor enable it to be used both to measure the instantaneous value in order to precisely plot the current and to obtain signals for a closed-loop control system of high-frequency power electronic converters. The sensor should be considered as an Augmented LEM Current Sensor (ALCS), which allows it to measure low- and high-frequency current signals. Finally, it allows for the measurement of a bipolar current up to 40 A. The overall cost of the sensor, along with the previously mentioned benefits, is an important feature of the proposed sensor. The present paper presents the analytical concept of the sensor (ALCS), a theoretical approach using simulation analysis, and the experimental results, which clearly demo... [more]

Keywords: arm current, circulating current, modular multilevel converter, proportional resonant controller
This paper proposed a control method for output and circulating currents of modular multilevel converter (MMC). The output and circulating current are controlled with the help of arm currents, which contain DC, fundamental frequency, and double frequency components. The arm current is transformed into a stationary reference frame (SRF) to isolate the DC and AC components. The AC component is controlled with a conventional proportional resonant (PR) controller, while the DC component is controlled by a proportional controller. The effective control of the upper arm and lower arm ultimately controls the output current so that it delivers the required power to the grid and circulating current in such a way that the second harmonic component is completely vanished leaving behind only the DC component. Comparative results of leg-level control based on PR controller are included in the paper to show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme. A three-phase, five-level MMC is developed... Keywords: frequency control, islanded microgrid, secondary control, virtual inertia control
Nowadays, the renewable energy sources in microgrids (MGs) have high participation to supply the consumer’s demand. In such MGs, the problems such as the system frequency stability, inertia, and damping reduction are threatened. To overcome this challenge, employing the virtual inertia control (VIC) concept in the MG structure could be considered as a viable solution to improve the system frequency response. Hence, this work proposes a novel modeling for VIC in an islanded MG that provides simultaneous emulation of the primary frequency control, virtual inertia, and damping. To show the efficiency of the proposed technique, a comparison is made between the dynamic performance of the proposed VIC and conventional VIC under different scenarios. The results indicate that the proposed VIC presents superior frequency performance in comparison with conventional VIC. In addition to VIC modeling, a new cascade controller based on three-degrees of freedom and fractional-order controllers (FOCs)... [more]

Keywords: Fault Detection, fault diagnosis, fine-tuning Naive Bayesian model, PV array
With the widespread attention and research of distributed photovoltaic (PV) systems, the fault detection and diagnosis problems of distributed PV systems has become increasingly prominent. To this end, a distributed PV array fault diagnosis method based on fine-tuning Naive Bayes model for the fault conditions of PV array such as open-circuit, short-circuit, shading, abnormal degradation, and abnormal bypass diode is proposed. First, in view of the problem of less distributed PV fault data, a fine-tuning Naive Bayes model (FTNB) is proposed to improve the diagnosis accuracy. Second, the failure sample set is used to train the model. Then, the maximum power point data of the PV inverter and the meteorological data are collected for fault diagnosis. Finally, the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method are verified by the analysis of simulation. In addition, this method requires only a small number of fault sample sets and no additional measurement equipment is required, which i... [more]

Keywords: arc fault diagnosis, intrinsic mode functions, multi-scale fuzzy entropy, support vector machine, variational mode decomposition
Arc fault diagnosis is necessary for the safety and efficiency of PV stations. This study proposed an arc fault diagnosis algorithm formed by combining variational mode decomposition (VMD), improved multi-scale fuzzy entropy (IMFE), and support vector machine (SVM). This method first uses VMD to decompose the current into intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) in the time-frequency domain, then calculates the IMFE according to the IMFs associated with the arc fault. Finally, it uses SVM to detect arc faults according to IMFEs. Arc fault data gathered from a PV arc generation experiment platform are used to validate the proposed method. The results indicated the proposed method can classify arc fault data and normal data effectively.

Keywords: analytical hierarchy process, energy policy, energy technology, macroeconomic analysis, multicriteria decision-making, sustainability assessment
The necessity to enhance multicriteria decision in the industry is challenging to support the current energy policy. European Union regulations and guidelines provide the guideline for minimalizing environmental harms but are not enough in their actions for providing effective sustainability assessment. None of the available standalone assessment methods do capture the comprehensibility of multicriteria decision-making. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate a challenge to incorporate the multicriteria sustainability decision-making method to mainstream energy policy, which is lacking in European Union policies. The novelty of the research lies in constructing a multicriteria sustainability approach for assessing energy technologies performance for embodying into a mainstream energy policy. In this study, the multicriteria decision-making—an approach combining life cycle-based methods, analytical hierarchy process, as well as macroeconomic analysis, was used to demonstrate the applica... April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: continuous control set model predictive power control, indirect matrix converter, input filter resonance suppression, optimal switching strategy
A continuous control set model predictive power control strategy for an indirect matrix converter is proposed in this paper. The load reactive power, the load active power, and the input reactive power are controlled simultaneously. This control strategy can obtain output waveforms with fixed switching frequency. Additionally, an optimal switching sequence is proposed to simplify the commutations of the indirect matrix converter. To suppress the input filter resonance, an active damping method is proposed. Experimental results prove that the proposed method features controllable input reactive power, controllable load active and reactive power, fixed switching frequency output waveforms, zero-current switching operations, and effectively suppresses input filter resonance.

Major changes in the technologies of power generation and distribution systems have been introduced in recent years due to concern over rapid climate change. Therefore, disturbances in the large-scale generation, transmission, and distribution of energy are expected to occur in the near future. This is due to the difficulty in controlling the transmission and distribution of energy produced from renewable energy sources (RESs), caused by the instability of these sources and the intermittent nature of their energy. As a result, maintaining the dynamic stability of wind power flow and control of the network frequency is becoming more challenging due to the high penetration impacts of RESs. In this paper, a control algorithm using the power-sharing method is proposed for a wind-based energy storage system to maintain the dynamic stability of wind power flow and control of frequency in the power network. To maintain the network stability, a storage system (battery) was installed to store t... [more]

This paper presents theoretical and experimental research studying the influence of process parameters on the quality of biomass pellets. A validated mathematical model was developed, expressing the density of biomass pellets as determined by moisture content, compression pressure, process heat, the initial density of the material, pelleting speed and initial volume of the material. The experiments for determining the influence of these parameters on the compression of biomass into pellets and optimizing the process were conducted on a heated single pellet compression device, using fir sawdust as raw material. To describe and study the process, four input and control parameters were varied—raw material moisture, pelleting speed, maximum force applied and pelleting die temperature. From the experiments, it was noticed that overall, moisture and pressure have the most important effect on the compression process and pelleting speed, and heat applied also affected the process. Pellet densi... [more]

Improving the energy performance of existing buildings is one of the main strategies defined by the European Union to reduce global energy costs. Amongst the actions to be carried out in buildings to achieve this objective is working with passive measures adapted to each type of climate. To assist designers in the process of finding appropriate solutions for each building and location, different tools have been developed and since the implementation of building information modeling (BIM), it has been possible to perform an analysis of a building’s life cycle from an energy perspective and other types of analysis such as a comfort analysis. In the case of Spain, the first BIM environment tool has been implemented that deals with the global analysis of a building’s behavior and serves as an alternative to previous methods characterized by their lack of both flexibility and information offered to designers. This paper evaluates and compares the official Spanish energy performance evaluati... [more]

Keywords: boost inverter, small-signal model, synchronous reference frame, voltage mode controller
A single-phase, single-stage, differential boost inverter comprises two independently-controlled boost DC-DC converters, with the load connected between their outputs. The net voltage on the load is sinusoidal and has a controllable frequency and magnitude that is larger than that of the DC source. The present work first derives steady-state and small-signal models of the inverter with parasitic elements. The results obtained from the line-to-output transfer function, control-to-output transfer function, open-loop input impedance, and open-loop output impedance models are compared with that of the ones obtained from the experimental testbed. Using the new models, a voltage mode controller is designed in the synchronous reference frame. The regulator design is explored through the use of an example. The results are verified against the small-signal model, then PLECS simulations, and finally a laboratory experiment. The results indicate excellent agreement between the model and experimen... Mining machinery and equipment used in modern mining are equipped with sensors and measurement systems at the stage of their production. Measuring devices are most often components of a control system or a machine performance monitoring system. In the case of headers, the primary task of these systems is to ensure safe operation and to monitor its correctness. It is customary to collect information in very large databases and analyze it when a failure occurs. Data mining methods allow for analysis to be made during the operation of machinery and mining equipment, thanks to which it is possible to determine not only their technical condition but also the causes of any changes that have occurred. The purpose of this work is to present a method for discovering missing information based on other available parameters, which facilitates the subsequent analysis of machine performance. The primary data used in this paper are the currents flowing through the windings of four header motors. In t... [more]

Keywords: grid-side converter, internal model control, sliding mode control, wind energy conversion system
In this paper, we propose a comparative study of linear and nonlinear algorithms designed for grid-side control of the power flow in a wind energy conversion system. We performed several simulations and experiments with step and variable power scenarios for different values of the DC-link capacity with the DC storage element being the key element of the grid-side converter. The linear control was designed on the basis of the internal model control theory where an active damping was added to avoid steady state errors. Nonlinear controls were built using first and second order sliding mode controls with theoretical considerations to ensure accuracy and stability. We observed that the first order sliding mode control was the most efficient algorithm for controlling the DC-link voltage but that the chattering degraded the quality of the energy injected into the grid as well as the efficiency of the grid-side converter. The linear control caused overshoots on the DC-link voltage; however, t... [more]

Among all the possible occurring reactivity effects of a fast reactor, the situations whereby the control rod was inserted, or the coolant was voided could lead to strong anisotropy of neutron flux distribution, therefore the angular dependence on neutron flux should be considered during the few-group cross-sections generation. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to compare the influence whether the angular dependence on neutron flux is considered in the calculation of few-group cross sections for the reactivity effect calculation. In the study, the 1-D SN finite difference neutron transport equation solver was implemented in the TULIP of SARAX code system so that the high-order neutron flux could be obtained. Meanwhile, the improved Tone’s method was also applied. The numerical results were obtained based on three experimental FR cores, the JOYO MK-I core, ZPPR-9 core, and ZPPR-10B core. Keywords: energy storage system, hosting capacity, Matlab/Simulink, Model Predictive Control, stand-alone microgrid
This paper presents the improvements of the hosting capacity of photovoltaics (PVs) and electric vehicles (EVs) in a stand-alone microgrid (MG) with an energy storage system (ESS) by consider-ing a model predictive control (MPC) based energy management system. The system is configured as an MG, including PVs, an ESS, a diesel generator (DG), and several loads with EVs. The DG is controlled to operate at rated power and the MPC algorithm is used in a stand-alone MG, which supplies the energy demanded for several loads with EVs. The hosting capacity of the load in-cluding the EV and PVs can be expanded through the ESS to the terminal node of the microgrid. In this case, the PVs and the load can be connected in excess of the capacity of the diesel genera-tor, and each bus in the feeder complies with the voltage range required by the grid. The effec-tiveness of the proposed algorithm to resolve the hosting capacity is demonstrated by numerical simulations.
