Selected Parameters of Oat Straw as an Alternative Energy Raw Material
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Avena sativa L., Biomass, calorific value, co-firing, Energy Efficiency, energy parameters, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solid biofuel, straw
Straw is treated as agricultural waste, and it is available in almost every region of Poland. A total of 30 million tons of straw is produced per year, of which there is a surplus of approximately 13.5 million tons of undeveloped straw. For energy purposes, straw from cereals or rapeseed is most often used. When analyzing scientific publications, it was noticed that, in Poland, large amounts of oat straw are produced, and there is no alternative use for it. Hence, we conducted research to determine the energy value of oat straw. Raw material was obtained from an individual farm from 2018 to 2020. Selected energy parameters for straw burned alone (100%) or co-fired with coal were analyzed in the following weight proportions: 70/30, 80/20, and 90/10 coal/oat straw. It was shown that changing weather conditions, in particular years, had a modifying effect on some of the energy parameters of straw. The calorific value of straw was lower than that of coal, but its impact on environmental po... [more]

A Comparative Analysis of Peak Load Shaving Strategies for Isolated Microgrid Using Actual Data
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery energy storage system, microgrid system, peak load shaving, peak shaving technique, photovoltaic system
Peak load reduction is one of the most essential obligations and cost-effective tasks for electrical energy consumers. An isolated microgrid (IMG) system is an independent limited capacity power system where the peak shaving application can perform a vital role in the economic operation. This paper presents a comparative analysis of a categorical variable decision tree algorithm (CVDTA) with the most common peak shaving technique, namely, the general capacity addition technique, to evaluate the peak shaving performance for an IMG system. The CVDTA algorithm deals with the hybrid photovoltaic (PV)—battery energy storage system (BESS) to provide the peak shaving service where the capacity addition technique uses a peaking generator to minimize the peak demand. An actual IMG system model is developed in MATLAB/Simulink software to analyze the peak shaving performance. The model consists of four major components such as, PV, BESS, variable load, and gas turbine generator (GTG) dispatch mod... [more]

Linking Energy Poverty with Thermal Building Regulations and Energy Efficiency Policies in Portugal
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, energy performance certificate, energy poverty, residential buildings, thermal building regulation
Energy-poverty (EP) must be considered an energy-related issue since buildings are a central part of people’s daily lives. Thus, it has an important role in energy-related policy implementation. Even though the European Union (EU) has endorsed general energy efficiency through the Energy Efficiency Directive and Energy Performance of Buildings Directive recast, it was the Clean Energy Package for all Europeans that clearly highlighted EP. The growing concerns with EP have also been emphasised in subsequent directives and initiatives. Despite some regulatory framework and the milder climate situation, the proportion of the population experiencing thermal discomfort in southern and eastern European countries, namely in the winter season, is relatively high, reflecting the poor thermal performance of building stock, low family incomes and high energy prices, among others. The current work analysed the EP evolution in Portugal in the EU context, and the Thermal Building Regulations and Ene... [more]

A Calibration of the Solar Load Ratio Method to Determine the Heat Gain in PV-Trombe Walls
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: design evaluation, passive systems, PV-Trombe wall, solar load ratio
The Trombe wall is a passive system used in buildings that indirectly transfers thermal energy to the adjacent environment by radiation and convection, and directly by the thermo-circulation that arises in the air cavity delimited between a transparent and an absorbing surface. Nevertheless, the latter is painted black to increase the energy gains, but this produces a negative visual impact and promotes the overheating risk in summer. To mitigate these aspects, a hybrid Trombe wall equipped with PV panels can be employed. The PV installation results in a more pleasing wall appearance and the overheating risk reduces because part of the absorbed solar radiation is transformed into electricity. To determine the actual performance of a such system, transient simulation tools are required to consider properly the wall thermal storage features, variation of the optical properties, air thermo-circulation, and PV power production. Alternatively, regarding the traditional Trombe wall, the lite... [more]

A Mobile Robot-Based System for Automatic Inspection of Belt Conveyors in Mining Industry
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: automatic inspection, autonomous mobile robot, belt conveyor, mining, predictive maintenance, UGV platform
Mechanical systems (as belt conveyors) used in the mining industry, especially in deep underground mines, must be supervised on a regular basis. Unfortunately, they require high power and are spatially distributed over a large area. Till now, some elements of the conveyor (drive units) have been monitored 24 h/day using SCADA systems. The rest of the conveyor is inspected by maintenance staff. To minimize the presence of humans in harsh environments, we propose a mobile inspection platform based on autonomous UGV. It is equipped with various sensors, and in practice it is capable of collecting almost the same information as maintenance inspectors (RGB image, sound, gas sensor, etc.). Till now such experiments have been performed in the lab or in the mine, but the robot was controlled by the operator. In such a scenario the robot is able to record data, process them and detect, for example, an overheated idler. In this paper we will introduce the general concept of an automatic robot-ba... [more]

Automatic PRPD Image Recognition of Multiple Simultaneous Partial Discharge Sources in On-Line Hydro-Generator Stator Bars
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: hydro-electric generators, identification of PRPDs with invalid PD source, multiple simultaneous sources, partial discharge recognition, PRPD pattern, separation of multiple PD types
In this study, a methodology for automatic recognition of multiple simultaneous types of partial discharges (PDs) in hydro-generator stator windings was proposed. All the seven PD sources typical in rotating machines were considered, and up to three simultaneous sources could be identified. The functionality of identifying samples with no valid PDs was also incorporated using a new technique. The data set was composed of phase-resolved partial discharge (PRPD) patterns obtained from on-line measurements of hydro-generators. From an input PRPD, noise and interference were removed with an improved version of an image-based denoising algorithm previously proposed by the authors. Then, a novel image-based algorithm that separates partially superposed PD clouds was proposed, by decomposing the input pattern into two sub-PRPDs containing discharges of different natures. From the sub-PRPDs, one extracts features quantifying the PD distribution over amplitudes and the contour of PD clouds. Tho... [more]

Investigation of Flowback Behaviours in Hydraulically Fractured Shale Gas Well Based on Physical Driven Method
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: big-data analysis, flowback, fracturing fluids, horizontal well, shale gas
Due to the complex microscope pore structure of shale, large-scale hydraulic fracturing is required to achieve effective development, resulting in a very complicated fracturing fluid flowback characteristics. The flowback volume is time-dependent, whereas other relevant parameters, such as the permeability, porosity, and fracture half-length, are static. Thus, it is very difficult to build an end-to-end model to predict the time-dependent flowback curves using static parameters from a machine learning perspective. In order to simplify the time-dependent flowback curve into simple parameters and serve as the target parameter of big data analysis and flowback influencing factor analysis, this paper abstracted the flowback curve into two characteristic parameters, the daily flowback volume coefficient and the flowback decreasing coefficient, based on the analytical solution of the seepage equation of multistage fractured horizontal Wells. Taking the dynamic flowback data of 214 shale gas... [more]

Cascaded H-Bridge Converter Based on Current-Source Inverter with DC Links Magnetically Coupled to Reduce the DC Inductors Value
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cascaded H-Bridge, current-source inverter, non-linear control, oscillating power compensation
The main drawback of the Cascaded-H Bridge converter based on three-phase/single-phase current-source inverters is the large DC inductors needed to limit the variation of the DC current caused by the single-phase inverter oscillating power. If the oscillating power is somehow compensated, then the DC inductor can be designed just as a function of the semiconductors’ switching frequency, reducing its value. This work explores the use of three-phase/single-phase cells magnetically coupled through their DC links to compensate for the oscillating power among them and, therefore, reduce the DC inductor value. At the same time, front ends controlled by a non-linear control strategy equalize the DC currents among coupled cells to avoid saturating the magnetic core. The effectiveness of the proposal is demonstrated using mathematical analysis and corroborated by computational simulation for a 110 kVA load per phase and experimental tests in a 2 kVA laboratory prototype. The outcomes show that... [more]

Selection of the Optimal Window Type and Orientation for the Two Cities in Serbia and One in Slovakia
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, fillings, glazing
The necessity of having windows on any building’s façade is not questionable. However, not every window is suitable for any building. The selection of an adequate window must include the analysis of various factors—the most important ones are the type of window (e.g., single or double glazing); filling gas in cavities (e.g., air, argon or some other gas); and placing, i.e., orientation of a window on a façade (facing north, south, or east, etc.). The research presented in this paper is dealing with the calculation of the window thermal loading for the cities of Kragujevac and Bor in Serbia and Žilina in Slovakia. These three cities were selected because they belong to different climate regions, according to the Köppen−Geiger climatic classification. The first two cities in Serbia belong to the same region Cf with difference only in the category of summer—Kragujevac Cfa and Bor Cfb—while the third city—Žilina in Slovakia—belongs to the Dfb region. Impact of Economic Affluence on CO2 Emissions in CEE Countries
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 emission, energy consumption, GDP, HDI index, renewable energy consumption, the EKC, urbanization
There is huge evidence for a relationship between economic growth and environmental degradation. One of the causes of environmental degradation is CO2 emission which is added to the atmosphere through human activities and excessive industrialization. The aim of this research is to examine the relationship between CO2 emissions and measures of wealth in countries of Central and Eastern Europe between 2000 and 2019. The paper extends the research on economic affluence by taking into consideration two measures of economic growth, in addition to GDP, the HDI index is included. The basis for the investigation is the EKC concept. All analyses are based on econometric models with GDP and the HDI index as independent variables. The results are not conclusive and there is no one model which best describes the relationship between CO2 emissions and economic growth. Verification of the models indicates the better fit of models with the HDI index as the measure of affluence. Moreover, the study co... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: heat removal, immersed tubes, methanation, Simulation
CO methanation is an exothermic process, and heat removal is an essential issue for the methanation reactor. Numerical studies were carried out to investigate the performance of a 3D fluidized bed methanation reactor with immersed cooling tubes. The simulations were carried out in the frame of the Euler−Euler model to analyze the performance of the reactor. The influences of operating temperatures were studied to understand the reaction characteristics. The temperature increases rapidly neared the inlet due to the reactions. The immersed tubes were effective at removing the reaction heat. The chemical equilibrium state was achieved with an operating temperature of 682 K for the case with immersed tubes. Different control mechanisms can be found during the process of increasing and decreasing the temperature. The reaction kinetic is the dominate factor for the cases with lower temperatures, while the chemical equilibrium will play a more important role at high temperature conditions. Th... [more]

Uncovering Hidden Factors in Electricity Consumption Based on Gaussian Mixture Estimation
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Gaussian mixture, load characterization, multimodal distribution, residential load
Load characteristics play an essential role in the planning of power generation and distribution. Various undiscovered factors, which could be socioeconomic, geographic, or climatic, make it possible to describe the electricity demand by a multimodal distribution. This letter proposes a novel method based on multimodal distributions to characterize the hidden factors in electricity consumption. Consequently, a new approach is developed to evaluate the impact of the underlying factors of electricity consumption. Some quantifiable and predictable factors are analyzed in developing multimodal distribution to describe the expected demand. Simulations based on synthetic and real-world data have been conducted to demonstrate the usefulness and robustness of the proposed method.

A Multi-Scale Numerical Model for Investigation of Flame Dynamics in a Thermal Flow Reversal Reactor
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: filtration combustion, flame propagation, multi-scale model, numerical simulation, porous medium
In this paper, the flame dynamics in a thermal flow reversal reactor are studied using a multi-scale model. The challenges of the multi-scale models lie in the data exchanges between different scale models and the capture of the flame movement of the filtered combustion by the pore-scale model. Through the multi-scale method, the computational region of the porous media is divided into the inlet preheating zone, reaction zone, and outlet exhaust zone. The three models corresponding to the three zones are calculated by volume average method, pore-scale method, and volume average method respectively. Temperature distribution is used as data for real-time exchange. The results show that the multi-scale model can save computation time when compared with the pore-scale model. Compared with the volumetric average model, the multi-scale model can capture the flame front and predict the flame propagation more accurately. Stratified Flow of Micropolar Nanofluid over Riga Plate: Numerical Analysis
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: Brownian motion, double stratification, mixed convection, Riga plate, suction or injection, thermophoresis
In this article, we present a numerical analysis of the energy and mass transport behavior of microrotational flow via Riga plate, considering suction or injection and mixed convection. The thermal stratified parameters of nanofluid are captured using an interpretation of the well-known Keller box model, which helps us to determine the characteristic properties of the physical parameters. The formulated boundary layer equations (nonlinear partial differential equations) are transformed into coupled ODEs with nonlinearities for the stratified controlled regimes. The impact of embedded flow and all physical quantities of practical interest, such as velocity, temperature, and concentration profile, are inspected and presented through tables and graphs. We found that the heat transfer on the surface decreases for the temperature stratification factor as mass transfer increases. Additionally, the fluid velocity increases as the modified Hartmann number increases.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: diesel shunting locomotives, locomotive series ChME3, parameters of an asynchronous traction motor, the influence of gear ratio on locomotive power index, traction characteristics
One of the assumptions made during the modernization process of diesel shunting locomotives is the replacement of a diesel traction motor with a DC generator with an electric asynchronous traction motor. The article aimed to develop a method of selecting energy-efficient parameters of an asynchronous electric traction motor for diesel shunting locomotives, which will ensure that its operating energy efficiency will be as high as possible. The method was verified on the example of a locomotive series ChME3 (ЧMЭ3, ČME3, ČKD S200). It has been found that using a traction asynchronous electric drive on a ChME3 locomotive, its efficiency increases in comparison with DC electric motors by 3−5% under the long-term operation modes and by 7−10% during locomotive operation with traction at the adhesion limit. Using a new traction gearbox with a higher gear ratio expands the speed range in which the asynchronous traction drive operates with a high-efficiency factor. It is effective to use a tract... [more]

A Coupled-Inductor Interleaved LLC Resonant Converter for Wide Operation Range
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: coupled-inductor, fixed-frequency PWM, interleaved, LLC resonant, wide operation range
In this paper, a coupled-inductor interleaved LLC resonant converter (CI-ILLC) was proposed, which can achieve extensive operation range applications by multiplexing inductors and switches. In this proposed CI-ILLC, the coupled-inductor not only serves as a filter inductor but also plays the role of transformer to improve the power density. By changing the modulation methods, the proposed converter can work at three modes for a wide operation range, namely high gain (HG) mode, medium gain (MG) mode, and low gain (LG) mode. Moreover, the interleaved structure greatly reduces the current ripple and current stress of switches. Besides, in HG and MG modes, all switches can realize zero-voltage switching, with high energy transmission efficiency. Finally, the simulation and experiment results of the prototype with 120−200 V input and 50−200 V output are presented to verify the viability of the proposed converter.

Many countries have set a goal for a carbon neutral future, and the adoption of solar energy as an alternative energy source to fossil fuel is one of the major measures planned. Yet not all locations are equally suitable for solar energy generation. This is due to uneven solar radiation distribution as well as various environmental factors. A number of studies in the literature have used multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) to determine the most suitable places to build solar power plants. To the best of our knowledge, no study has addressed the subject of optimal solar plant site identification for the Al-Qassim region, although developing renewable energy in Saudi Arabia has been put on the agenda. This paper developed a spatial MCDA framework catering to the characteristics of the Al-Qassim region. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: axial-flow turbine, generator, mean-line design, organic Rankine cycle (ORC), R245fa
The organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is a thermodynamic cycle in which electrical power is generated using an organic refrigerant as a working fluid at low temperatures with low-grade enthalpy. We propose a turbine embedded in a generator (TEG), wherein the turbine rotor is embedded inside the generator rotor, thus simplifying turbine generator structure using only one bearing. The absence of tip clearance between the turbine rotor blade and casing wall in the TEG eliminates tip clearance loss, enhancing turbine efficiency. A single-stage axial-flow turbine was designed using mean-line analysis based on physical properties, and we conducted a parametric study of turbine performance, and predicted turbine efficiency and power using the tip clearance loss coefficient. When the tip clearance loss coefficient was applied, turbine isentropic efficiency and power were 0.89 and 20.42 kW, respectively, and ORC thermal efficiency was 4.81%. Heavy petroleum industries, including the fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) unit, are useful for producing fuels but they are among some of the biggest contributors to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The recent global push for mitigation efforts against climate change has resulted in increased legislation that affects the operations and future of these industries. In terms of the FCC unit, on the riser side, more legislation is pushing towards them switching from petroleum-driven energy sources to more renewable sources such as solar and wind, which threatens the profitability of the unit. On the regenerator side, there is more legislation aimed at reducing emissions of GHGs from such units. As a result, it is more important than ever to develop models that are accurate and reliable, that will help optimise the unit for maximisation of profits under new regulations and changing trends, and that predict emissions of various GHGs to keep up with new reporting guidelines.
