March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ecological civilization, green development, photovoltaic industry, renewable energy law
As one of the world’s largest energy consumers, China is facing the challenge of growing energy demand. Under this background, China is actively implementing the concept of green development and sustainable development route. As inexhaustible green energy, solar energy, has been established as an independent energy type by the Renewable Energy Law and has a broad development prospect. At present, the industrialization level of photovoltaic manufacturing in China is constantly improving, and the efficiency of photovoltaic power generation is constantly improving. However, from the perspective of the system, China’s photovoltaic industry supporting legal system is not perfect. There is a mismatch between the existing laws and industrial development needs, which restricts the future development of photovoltaic power generation in China. The legal environment is crucial to the development of a country’s relevant industries. Only with a good supporting legal system can the development and u... [more]

Keywords: anomaly detection, energy analytics, Machine Learning, power interruptions, unbalanced classification
Electric failures are a problem for customers and grid operators. Identifying causes and localizing the source of failures in the grid is critical. Here, we focus on a specific power grid in the Arctic region of Northern Norway. First, we collected data pertaining to the grid topology, the topography of the area, the historical meteorological data, and the historical energy consumption/production data. Then, we exploited statistical and machine-learning techniques to predict the occurrence of failures. The classification models achieve good performance, meaning that there is a significant relationship between the collected variables and fault occurrence. Thus, we interpreted the variables that mostly explain the classification results to be the main driving factors of power interruption. Wind speed of gust and local industry activity are found to be the main controlling parameters in explaining the power failure occurrences. The result could provide important information to the distrib... [more]

Keywords: artificial neural network, distributed generation, energy storage system, fuzzy logic, microgrid, PID
Microgrids, comprising distributed generation, energy storage systems, and loads, have recently piqued users’ interest as a potentially viable renewable energy solution for combating climate change. According to the upstream electricity grid conditions, microgrid can operate in grid-connected and islanded modes. Energy storage systems play a critical role in maintaining the frequency and voltage stability of an islanded microgrid. As a result, several energy management systems techniques have been proposed. This paper introduces a microgrid system, an overview of local control in a microgrid, and an efficient EMS for effective microgrid operations using three smart controllers for optimal microgrid stability. We designed a microgrid consisting of renewable sources, Li-ion batteries, the main grid as a backup system, and AC/DC loads. The proposed system control was based on supplying loads as efficiently as possible using renewable energy sources and monitoring the battery’s state of ch... [more]

Yuchen Yang, Kavan Javanroodi, Vahid M. Nik
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: climate change, climate uncertainties, future climate data, solar energy, wind energy
Climate change can strongly affect renewable energy production. The state of the art in projecting future renewable energy generation has focused on using regional climate prediction. However, regional climate prediction is characterized by inherent uncertainty due to the complexity of climate models. This work provides a comprehensive study to quantify the impact of climate uncertainties in projecting future renewable energy potential over five climate zones of Europe. Thirteen future climate scenarios, including five global climate models (GCMs) and three representative concentration pathways (RCPs), are downscaled by the RCA4 regional climate model (RCM) over 90 years (2010−2099), divided into three 30-year periods. Solar and wind energy production is projected considering short-/long-term climate variations and uncertainties in seven representative cities (Narvik, Gothenburg, Munich, Antwerp, Salzburg, Valencia, and Athens). The results showed that the uncertainty caused by GCMs ha... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: engine misfire, Fault Detection, LSTM, pattern recognition, time-frequency analysis
In this work, a new approach was developed for the detection of engine misfire based on the long short-term memory recurrent neural network (LSTM RNN) using crank speed signal. The datasets are acquired from a six-cylinder-inline, turbo-charged diesel engine. Previous works investigated misfire detection in a limited range of engine running speed, running load or misfire types. In this work, the misfire patterns consist of normal condition, six types of one-cylinder misfire faults and fifteen types of two-cylinder misfire faults. All the misfire patterns are tested under wide range of running conditions of the tested engine. The traditional misfire detection method is tested on the datasets first, and the result show its limitation on high-speed low-load conditions. The LSTM RNN is a type of artificial neural network which has the ability of considering both the current input in-formation and the previous input information; hence it is helpful in extracting features of crank speed in w... Subject: Environment
Keywords: electrical resistivity tomography, environment research, geological environment, natural–technical system, peaceful underground nuclear explosion, permafrost, Yakutia
The site where a peaceful underground nuclear explosion, Crystal, was detonated in 1974, at a depth of 98 m in perennially frozen Cambrian limestones, was studied by electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) in 2019. The purpose of our research, the results of which are presented in this article, was to assess the current permafrost state at the Crystal site and its surroundings by inversion and interpretation of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) data. Inversion of the ERT data in Res2Dinv verified against ZondRes2D forward models yielded 2D inverted resistivity sections to a depth of 80 m. The ERT images revealed locally degrading permafrost at the Crystal site and its surroundings. The warming effect was caused by two main factors: (i) a damage zone of deformed rocks permeable to heat and fluids, with a radius of 160 m around the emplacement hole; (ii) the removal of natural land cover at the site in 2006. The artificial cover of rock from a nearby quarry, which was put up above... [more]

Keywords: correlation coefficient, cyclic iteration, local updating, multi-point geostatistical inversion, permanent updating ratio of probability, Xinchang gas field
In order to solve the problem that elastic parameter constraints are not taken into account in local lithofacies updating in multi-point geostatistical inversion, a new multi-point geostatistical inversion method with local facies updating under seismic elastic constraints is proposed. The main improvement of the method is that the probability of multi-point facies modeling is combined with the facies probability reflected by the optimal elastic parameters retained from the previous inversion to predict and update the current lithofacies model. Constrained by the current lithofacies model, the elastic parameters were obtained via direct sampling based on the statistical relationship between the lithofacies and the elastic parameters. Forward simulation records were generated via convolution and were compared with the actual seismic records to obtain the optimal lithofacies and elastic parameters. The inversion method adopts the internal and external double cycle iteration mechanism, an... [more]
Influence of Fluid Compressibility and Movements of the Swash Plate Axis of Rotation on the Volumetric Efficiency of Axial Piston Pumps
Paweł Załuski
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: axial piston pump, fluid bulk modulus, hydraulic pump, volumetric efficiency
This paper describes the design of a swash plate axial piston pump and the theoretical models describing the bulk modulus of aerated and non-aerated fluids. The dead space volume is defined and the influence of this volume and the fluid compressibility on the volumetric efficiency of the pump is considered. A displacement of the swash plate rotation axis is proposed to reduce the dead space volume for small swash plate swing angles. A prototype design of a pump with a displaced axis of rotation of a swash plate with two directions of delivery is presented, in which the capacity is changed by means of a valve follow-up mechanism. Comparative results for a pump with a displaced and a non-displaced swash plate rotation axis are presented, which confirm that displacement of the swash plate rotation axis causes an increase in volumetric efficiency that is apparent for high pressure discharge and small swash plate angles. The determined characteristics were compared with a mathematical model... [more]
Nonlinear Modeling of Dynamic Characteristics of Pump-Turbine

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic characteristics, hydropower station, nonlinear model, pump-turbine
Hydropower is a kind of clean energy, which can effectively reduce the consumption of fossil energy and is one of the main fields of new energy development. Pumped storage power station not only provides a solution for storing electric energy and generating excess, but also is a clean, efficient, economical and safe power system regulation method with high quality. Accurate modeling of a pump-turbine, as the core equipment of a pumped storage unit, is the key to safe and stable operation of the pumped storage unit. At present, a method of simplifying the external characteristics of a pump-turbine into a first-order linear model is widely used, which cannot effectively and accurately reveal the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of the unit in transition process. In order to meet the demand of high-precision simulation of the unit, a new method of identifying Taylor series expansion considering nonlinearity based on the torque characteristic formula and the flow characteristic formula is... Keywords: Genetic Algorithm, optimal operation, price elasticity, renewable energy sources, time-of-use demand response
Like most developing countries, Afghanistan still employs the traditional philosophy of supplying all its load demands whenever they happen. However, to have a reliable and cost-effective system, the new approach proposes to keep the variations of demand at the lowest possible level. The power system infrastructure requires massive capital investment; demand response (DR) is one of the economic options for running the system according to the new scheme. DR has become the intention of many researchers in developed countries. However, very limited works have investigated the employment of appropriate DR programs for developing nations, particularly considering renewable energy sources (RESs). In this paper, as two-stage programming, the effect of the time-of-use demand response (TOU-DR) program on optimal operation of Afghanistan real power system in the presence of RESs and pumped hydropower storage (PHS) system in the day-ahead power market is analyzed. Using the concept of price elast... [more]
Validation of a Method for Measuring the Position of Pick Holders on a Robotically Assisted Mining Machine’s Working Unit

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: calibration, cutting head, measurement system, robotic manufacturing station, segmentation, vision system
For effective mining, it is essential to ensure that the picks are positioned correctly on the working unit of a mining machine. This is due to the fact that the design of roadheader cutting heads/drums using computer-aided tools is based on the operating conditions of the roadheader/shearer/milling machine. The geometry of the cutting head is optimized for selected criteria by simulating the mining process using a computer. The reclaimed cutting head bodies that are utilized in production are manufactured again in the overhaul process. Ensuring that the dimensions of the cutting head bodies match the rated dimensions is labor-intensive and involves high production costs. For dimensional deviations of the cutting head bodies, it is necessary to control the position of the pick holders relative to the cutting head side surface in real time during robotic-assisted assembly. This article discusses the possibility of utilizing a stereovision system for calculating the distance between the... [more]

Piotr Dudziński, Aleksander Skurjat
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: articulated frame wheeled vehicles, efficiency in positioning, hydraulic system stiffness, minimising energy losses, snaking
Hydraulic steering systems for mechanical devices, for example, manipulators or vehicle steering systems, should be able to achieve high positioning precision with high energy efficiency. However, this condition is very often not met in practical applications. This is usually due to the stiffness of the hydraulic system being too low. As a result, additional corrections are required to achieve the required positioning precision. Unfortunately, this means additional energy losses in the hydraulic control system. In this study, this problem is presented using the example of a hydraulic steering system for an articulated frame steer vehicle. This hydraulic steering system should provide the required directional stability for road traffic safety reasons. So far, this issue, connected mainly with the harmful phenomenon of so-called vehicle snaking behaviour, has not been solved sufficiently practically. To meet the needs of industrial practice, taking into account the current global state o... [more]

Keywords: electricity markets, locational marginal price (LMP), Machine Learning, multi-output regression
Electricity markets provide valuable data for regulators, operators, and investors. The use of machine learning methods for electricity market data could provide new insights about the market, and this information could be used for decision-making. This paper proposes a tool based on multi-output regression method using support vector machines (SVR) for LMP forecasting. The input corresponds to the active power load of each bus, in this case obtained through Monte Carlo simulations, in order to forecast LMPs. The LMPs provide market signals for investors and regulators. The results showed the high performance of the proposed model, since the average prediction error for fitting and testing datasets of the proposed method on the dataset was less than 1%. This provides insights into the application of machine learning method for electricity markets given the context of uncertainty and volatility for either real-time and ahead markets.

Keywords: Bonferroni mean operators, interval-valued T-spherical fuzzy sets, multi-attribute group decision-making, T-spherical fuzzy sets
To find the correspondence between every number of attributes, the Bonferroni mean (BM) operator is most widely used and proven to be a flexible approach. To express uncertain information, the frame of the interval-valued T-spherical fuzzy set (IVTSFS) is a recent development in fuzzy settings which discusses four aspects of uncertain information using closed sub-intervals of [0,1] and hence reduces the information loss greatly. In this research study, we introduced the principle of BM operators with IVTSFS to develop the principle of the inter-valued T-spherical fuzzy (IVTSF) BM (IVTSFBM) operator, the IVTSF-weighted BM (IVTSFWBM) operator, the IVTSF geometric BM (IVTSFGBM) operator, and the IVTSF-weighted geometric BM (IVTSFWGBM) operator. To see the significance of the proposed BM operators, we applied these BM operators to evaluate the performance of solar cells that play an important role in the field of energy storage. To do so, we developed a multi-attribute group decision-makin... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: atypical consumption behavior, COVID 19, load profile, power load uncertainty, short term load forecast
Short-term load forecasting (STLF) is a fundamental tool for power networks’ proper functionality. As large consumers need to provide their own STLF, the residential consumers are the ones that need to be monitored and forecasted by the power network. There is a huge bibliography on all types of residential load forecast in which researchers have struggled to reach smaller forecasting errors. Regarding atypical consumption, we could see few titles before the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) restrictions, and afterwards all titles referred to the case of COVID-19. The purpose of this study was to identify, among the most used STLF methods—linear regression (LR), autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) and artificial neural network (ANN)—the one that had the best response in atypical consumption behavior and to state the best action to be taken during atypical consumption behavior on the residential side. The original contribution of this paper regards the forecasting of loads th... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: harmonic resonance, over-voltage, power system restoration, PSCAD/EMTDC
In this paper, a power system restoration study following a massive or complete blackout was performed. The power system restoration process from a complete shutdown system without the operating generation and load starts with energizing primary restorative transmission systems. During this primary restoration process, unexpected over-voltage may occur due to nonlinear interaction between the unloaded transformer and the transmission system. This is known as the harmonic resonance phenomenon that may cause the burning out of a transformer or other devices. So far, harmonic resonances have been reported in some extra-high voltage systems around the world. Since the harmonic resonance originates from the nonlinear characteristics of the power system components, it is very difficult to predict the occurrence of this phenomenon. This paper reports the analyses of the harmonic resonance that can occur in the Korean power system. In addition, through calculating the required buffer load comp... [more]
Processes of Modernization of Consumption in Poland in the Context of the Sustainable Consumption and the Functioning of the Renewable Energy Market
Magdalena Sobocińska
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: renewable energy sources, strong sustainability consumption, sustainable development, weak sustainability consumption
The process of consumption modernization can be expressed by adopting the principles of sustainable development within the sphere of consumption. It should be emphasized that the implementation of a sustainable consumption model becomes especially important when considering the fact that not only various types of enterprises but also consumers participate in the excessive consumption of natural resources. The processes of sustainable consumption that are related to its humanization and the formation of a responsible society are a response to the overconsumption of goods and services, which is not determined by actual human needs and does not consider social and ecological costs. The aim of the paper is to present a process of consumption modernization in Poland in the context of the functioning of the renewable energy market. Special attention is paid to behaviours that are consistent with the sustainable consumption model, as well as with the motives for using renewable energy sources... [more]
Numerical Investigation of Single-Row Double-Jet Film Cooling of a Turbine Guide Vane under High-Temperature and High-Pressure Conditions

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: double-jet film cooling, numerical simulation, pressure surface, suction surface, turbine guide vane
Single-row double-jet film cooling (DJFC) of a turbine guide vane is numerically investigated in the present study, under a realistic aero-thermal condition. The double-jet units are positioned at specific locations, with 57% axial chord length (Cx) on the suction side or 28% Cx on the pressure side with respect to the leading edge of the guide vane. Three spanwise spacings (Z) in double-jet unit (Z = 0, 0.5d, and 1.0d, here d is the film hole diameter) and four spanwise injection angles (β = 11°, 17°, 23°, and 29°) are considered in the layout design of double jets. The results show that the layout of double jets affects the coupling of adjacent jets and thus subsequently changes the jet-in-crossflow dynamics. Relative to the spanwise injection angle, the spanwise spacing in a double-jet unit is a more important geometric parameter that affects the jet-in-crossflow dynamics in the downstream flowfield. With the increase in the spanwise injection angle and spanwise spacing in the doubl... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: control systems, hydrogen purging, PEFC system, water management
In this report, a 5 kW PEFC system running on dry hydrogen with an appropriately sized Balance of Plant (BoP) was used to conduct experimental studies and analyses of gas supply subsystems. The improper rating and use of BoP components has been found to increase parasitic loads, which consequently has a direct effect on the polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) system efficiency. Therefore, the minimisation of parasitic loads while maintaining desired performance is crucial. Nevertheless, little has been found in the literature regarding experimental work on large stacks and BoP, with the majority of papers concentrating on modelling. A particular interest of our study was the anode side of the fuel cell. Additionally the rationale behind the use of hydrogen anode recirculation was scrutinised, and a novel anode purging strategy was developed and implemented. Through experimental modelling, the use of cathode air blower was minimised since it was found to be the biggest contributor to t... [more]

Keywords: combined heat and power, district heating system, energy savings, steam cushion system, Thermal Energy Storage
The paper presents an analytical discussion of how to improve the energy efficiency of the steam cushion system operation for a Thermal Energy Storage (TES) tank. The EU’s green deal 2050 target policy requires an increase in the energy efficiency of energy production and use, as well as an increase in the share of renewable energy in the overall energy production balance. The use of energy-efficient TES is considered as one of the most important technologies to achieve the objectives of this EU policy. The analyses presented in the paper of energy-efficient operation of steam cushion (SC) systems were carried out by using operational data received from three District Heating Systems (DHSs) that supply heat and electricity to one of the largest cities in Poland and are equipped with the TES systems. These three analyzed TESs differ in capacities from 12,800 to 30,400 m3, tank diameters from 21 to 30 m and shell height from 37 to 48.2 m. The main purpose of using a steam cushion system... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: charging station, electric vehicle, electromobility, goods delivery, metaheuristics, vehicle routing problem
With the rise of the electric vehicle market share, many logistic companies have started to use electric vehicles for goods delivery. Compared to the vehicles with an internal combustion engine, electric vehicles are considered as a cleaner mode of transport that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As electric vehicles have a shorter driving range and have to visit charging stations to replenish their energy, the efficient routing plan is harder to achieve. In this paper, the Electric Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows (EVRPTW), which deals with the routing of electric vehicles for the purpose of goods delivery, is observed. Two recharge policies are considered: full recharge and partial recharge. To solve the problem, an Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search (ALNS) metaheuristic based on the ruin-recreate strategy is coupled with a new initial solution heuristic, local search, route removal, and exact procedure for optimal charging station placement. The procedure for the O(1) ev... [more]

Keywords: core loss, dynamic torque, flux reversal, leakage-flux, magnetic flux path, static torque, switched reluctance machine, torque ripple, winding arrangement
The goal of this paper is to present a comparative analysis of two types of winding arrangements for a three-phase 12/8 switched reluctance motor (SRM), where short- and fully-pitched winding arrangements under unipolar operation are considered. From the analytical results, the short-pitched winding has the best torque per copper weight ratio. The core loss based on counting the number of flux reversals in the stator yoke for each winding arrangement is also proposed and mentioned. To reduce the magnetic flux reversals in the stator core, changing the direction of the magnetic flux path by modifying the winding polarities of the short-pitched winding could reduce 10−13% of core loss compared to the conventional winding. A 1 kW, 12/8 SRM prototype for the ventilation fan application is constructed and tested in order to verify the design consideration of winding configuration. At the rated condition, a maximum efficiency around 82.5% could be achieved.

Keywords: fault section, LVDC microgrid, protection, wavelet transform
The demand for a low voltage direct current (LVDC) microgrid is increasing by the increase of DC-based digital loads and renewable resources and the rapid development of power electronics technology. For the stable operation of an LVDC microgrid, it is necessary to develop a protection method. In this paper, the new protection scheme considering the fault section is proposed using wavelet transform (WT) in an LVDC microgrid. The fault sections are classified into DC side of the alternating current (AC)/DC converter, DC/DC converter connected to photovoltaic (PV) system, DC line, and DC bus. The characteristics of fault current at each fault section are analyzed. Based on these analyses, the new protection scheme including the fault section estimation is proposed using WT. The proposed scheme estimates the fault section using the detail component after performing WT and sends the trip signal to each circuit breaker according to the fault section. The proposed protection scheme is verifi... [more]

Keywords: large eddy simulation, modified actuator line model, power, staggered spacing, wake, wind turbines
On a wind farm, the wake has an important impact on the performance of the wind turbines. For example, the wake of an upstream wind turbine affects the blade load and output power of the downstream wind turbine. In this paper, a modified actuator line model with blade tips, root loss, and an airfoil three-dimensional delayed stall was revised. This full-scale modified actuator line model with blades, nacelles, and towers, was combined with a Large Eddy Simulation, and then applied and validated based on an analysis of wind turbine wakes in wind farms. The modified actuator line model was verified using an experimental wind turbine. Subsequently, numerical simulations were conducted on two NREL 5 MW wind turbines with different staggered spacing to study the effect of the staggered spacing on the characteristics of wind turbines. The results show that the output power of the upstream turbine stabilized at 5.9 MW, and the output power of the downstream turbine increased. When the stagger... [more]
