The Impact of Climate Change on Primary Air Treatment Processes and Energy Demand in Air Conditioning Systems—A Case Study from Warsaw, Poland
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: air conditioning, building energy use, chilled beam, climate change, energy demand, fan coil, global warming, ventilation
This article presents the impact of climate change on air treatment processes and energy demand in a selected air-conditioning system. The analysis was performed for a system supplying rooms with pre-treated primary air. Further treatment occurred directly in the rooms with individual devices such as fan coils or chilled beams. The analysis of the second stage of air treatment was not part of this study. The calculations were made for the city of Warsaw, where, according to the climate analysis for the period 1961−2020, an increase in outside temperature by 0.4 °C per decade and an increase in air humidity by 0.2 g/kg per decade were observed. The system analysis was divided into two stages. The first, including calculations made for monthly average climate data for the entire period of 1961−2020, shows changes in the energy demand of the system, resulting from progressive climate change. This analysis confirmed the general tendency of increasing demand for cooling energy and decreasin... [more]

Nature-Based Solutions in Poland against Climate Change
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: climate change, nature-based solutions, Poland, sustainable development
One of the currently promoted methods of counteracting climate change is nature-based climate solutions, which harness the power of nature to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainable management of ecosystems is a guarantee for sustained human well-being. This underestimated, but extremely efficient and cheap method of integrating nature resources into the urban fabric is an economic “injection” for communal authorities. These “green” benefits should be standard in land-use planning in the era of anthropocentrism. Solutions based on nature were the reason for investigating their perception by Polish municipalities. The survey covered the entire country (all 2477 municipalities) from 20 July to 31 August 2021 through an electronic survey, obtaining 2128 responses (85.9% return rate). In the final result, data were obtained that support the hypotheses posed in the study. The main objective of the research was to check the level of activity of municipalities in Poland in the field of p... [more]

Control Analysis with Modified LQR Method of Anti-Tank Missile with Vectorization of the Rocket Engine Thrust
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: anti-tank missile, control actuation system, linear-quadratic regulator, optimal control, thrust vectoring control
This article approaches the issue of the optimal control of a hypothetical anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) with an innovative rocket engine thrust vectorization system. This is a highly non-linear dynamic system; therefore, the linearization of such a mathematical model requires numerous simplifications. For this reason, the application of a classic linear-quadratic regulator (LQR) for controlling such a flying object introduces significant errors, and such a model would diverge significantly from the actual object. This research paper proposes a modified linear-quadratic regulator, which analyzes state and control matrices in flight. The state matrix is replaced by a Jacobian determinant. The ATGM autopilot, through the LQR method, determines the signals that control the control surface deflection angles and the thrust vector via calculated Jacobians. This article supplements and develops the topics addressed in the authors’ previous work. Its added value includes the introduction of... [more]

On the Impact of Climate Change on Building Energy Consumptions: A Meta-Analysis
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: building performance, climate change, energy consumption, impact assessments
The body of literature on climate change impacts on building energy consumption is rising, driven by the urgency to implement adaptation measures. Nevertheless, the multitude of prediction methodologies, future scenarios, as well as climate zones investigated, results in a wide range of expected changes. For these reasons, the present review aims to map climate change impacts on building energy consumption from a quantitative perspective and to identify potential relationships between energy variation and a series of variables that could affect them, including heating and cooling degree-days (HDDs and CDDs), reference period, future time slices and IPCC emission scenarios, by means of statistical techniques. In addition, an overview of the main characteristics of the studies related to locations investigated, building types and methodological approaches are given. To sum up, global warming leads to: (i) decrease in heating consumptions; (ii) increase in cooling consumption; (iii) growt... [more]

Quantifying Environmental and Economic Impacts of Highly Porous Activated Carbon from Lignocellulosic Biomass for High-Performance Supercapacitors
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Reaction Engineering
Keywords: activated carbon, bioproducts, economic feasibility, environmental impacts, lignocellulosic biomass, supercapacitor electrodes
Activated carbons (AC) from lignocellulosic biomass feedstocks are used in a broad range of applications, especially for electrochemical devices such as supercapacitor electrodes. Limited studies of environmental and economic impacts for AC supercapacitor production have been conducted. Thus, this paper evaluated the environmental and economic impacts of AC produced from lignocellulosic biomass for energy-storage purposes. The life cycle assessment (LCA) was employed to quantify the potential environmental impacts associated with AC production via the proposed processes including feedstock establishment, harvest, transport, storage, and in-plant production. A techno-economic model was constructed to analyze the economic feasibility of AC production, which included the processes in the proposed technology, as well as the required facility installation and management. A base case, together with two alternative scenarios of KOH-reuse and steam processes for carbon activation, were evaluat... [more]

Open-Circuit Fault-Tolerant Strategy for Interleaved Boost Converters via Filippov Method
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: eigenvalues, fault-tolerant strategy, interleaved converters, monodromy matrix, open-circuit, slope compensation
Interleaved converters use an increased number of power electronics switches; this may subsequently affect their reliability. However, this is an opportunity to develop fault-tolerant strategies to improve their reliability and to ensure continuity of service. This is why we herein propose, for the first time, a mathematical function to simultaneously model the healthy and faulty conditions of each switch, thus enabling a unique model of the system. This model is then used in an original fault-tolerant strategy based upon the peak current control with slope compensation. This method not only extends the stable range of the load variation but also ensures the stability in faulty conditions. Finally, the simulation results validate its effectiveness and confirm the theoretical analysis.

Does the Net Present Value as a Financial Metric Fit Investment in Green Energy Security?
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: carbon neutrality, energy efficiency improvements, energy security, financial indicators, green innovations, net present value
Surprisingly, little is known whether the net present value (NPV) used as a financial metric in budgeting and investment planning to analyse a projects’ profitability is universal. Meanwhile, the epochal green energy revolution ensuring carbon neutrality through green innovations requires enormous investments, and projects realised must ensure energy security. Therefore, there is a need to reanalyse financial metrics used in financial planning, including NPV. We eliminate this research gap and, based on data from Poland, Romania, Hungary, Croatia, the USA, the United Kingdom, Japan, Israel, and Euro Zone, explain why one may not perceive the currently used NPV formula as a universal financial metric. We show that the variable discount rate influences the time value of money. Therefore, there is a need to redefine the NPV formula. This study makes two main contributions. First, it creates new ground by revisiting the NPV formula in the emerging market context compared to stable economie... [more]

Fault Detection and Efficiency Assessment for HVAC Systems Using Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring: A Review
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, fault detection and diagnosis, HVAC, non-intrusive load monitoring
Heat, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are some of the most energy-intensive equipment in buildings and their faulty or inefficient operation can significantly increase energy waste. Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM), which is a software-based tool, has been a popular research area over the last few decades. NILM can play an important role in providing future energy efficiency feedback and developing fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) tools in smart buildings. Therefore, the review of NILM-based methods for FDD and the energy efficiency (EE) assessment of HVACs can be beneficial for users as well as buildings and facilities operators. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is the first review paper on the application of NILM techniques in these areas and highlights their effectiveness and limitations. This review shows that even though NILM could be successfully implemented for FDD and the EE evaluation of HVACs, and enhance the performance of these techn... [more]

Comparison of Nature and Synthetic Zeolite for Waste Battery Electrolyte Treatment in Fixed-Bed Adsorption Column
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electrolyte post-treatment, fixed-bed column, heavy metal pollution, ultrasonication, zeolite
To support a sustainable energy development, CO2 reduction for carbon neutralization and water-splitting for hydrogen economy are two feasible technical routes, both of which require a significant input of renewable energies. To efficiently store renewable energies, secondary batteries will be applied in great quantity, so that a considerable amount of energy needs to be invested to eliminate the waste battery electrolyte pollution caused by heavy metals including Cu2+, Zn2+ and Pb2+. To reduce this energy consumption, the removal behaviors of these ions by using clinoptilolite and zeolite A under 5, 7 and 10 BV h−1 in a fixed-bed reactor were investigated. The used zeolites were then regenerated by a novel NH4Cl solution soaking, coupled with the ultrasonication method. Further characterizations were carried out using scanning electron microscopy, N2 adsorption and desorption test, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. The adsorption breakthrough curves revealed that the leaching preferen... [more]

Analysis of Hull Shape Impact on Energy Consumption in an Electric Port Tugboat
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: autonomous tugboat, electric propulsion, energy consumption, tugboat with electric drive, zero-emission tugboat
The trend to replace internal combustion engines with electric zero-emission drives, visible in the automotive industry, also exists in the shipbuilding industry. In contrary to land vehicles, the requirements for the electric propulsion system of tugs are much greater, which combined with the limited space and energy on board, makes any amount of energy valuable. Strategic changes in the policy of many countries, such as the “Fit for 55” package, introduce plans to significantly reduce CO2 emissions, which favors the development of alternative drives and their introduction to new areas of operation. This article presents that it is possible to reduce the amount of energy an electric tug spends for movement by applying the Particle Swarm Optimization method to modify the shape of its hull. A statistical analysis of public data was performed to determine the speed profiles of actual port tugs. The Van Oortmerssen method was used to determine the hull resistances of the proposed tug and... [more]

Flushing of Soils Highly Contaminated with Cd Using Various Washing Agents Derived from Sewage Sludge
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: column, dehydrogenase, flow rate, kinetics of Cd removal, soil properties, soil remediation
The suitability of sewage-sludge derived washing agents (SS_WAs) (dissolved organic matter DOM; humic-like substances HLS; soluble humic substances SHS), was assessed for removing Cd from highly contaminated (300 mg/kg) sandy clay loam and clay. The soils were remediated via column flushing at two flow rates, 0.5 and 1.0 mL/min. The stability of the flow velocity (FV) depended on the type of SS_WA and decreased in the following order: DOM > HLS > SHS. Cd was most effectively removed during the first hours of flushing, and the process proceeded with a first-order kinetics. The overall process efficiency was higher at flow rate of 1.0 mL/min than at 0.5 mL/min and ranged from 65.7 (SHS) to 75.5% (DOM) for the sandy clay loam and from 64.7% (SHS) to 67.8% (DOM) for the clay. However, all SS_WAs at both flow rates removed the most mobile Cd fraction (F1) with an efficiency above 90%. Flushing improved soil characteristics in terms of the content of organic matter, humic substances and nutr... [more]

This article deals with options for how to express the luminous flux from outdoor electrical substations of the electric transmission system. Processing of the models of light emissions before and after refurbishment of lighting systems was motivated by setting out rules for the design and erection of refurbished lighting systems in outdoor electrical substations, which are most commonly built in inhabited rural areas with low luminance of the background. The proposed model and calculations are based on requirements of international standards and recommendations for lighting of outdoor workplaces as well as on internal regulations of the ČEPS (Czech Transmission System Operator). These requirements are implemented in real electrical substations and lighting models that are extended by the calculation space of the software goniophotometer. The software goniophotometer was used to evaluate light distribution characteristics of entire electric stations in various situations. This article... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: forecasting, natural gas consumption, neural networks, random forest
Natural gas consumption depends on many factors. Some of them, such as weather conditions or historical demand, can be accurately measured. The authors, based on the collected data, performed the modeling of temporary and future natural gas consumption by municipal consumers in one of the medium-sized cities in Poland. For this purpose, the machine learning algorithms, neural networks and two regression algorithms, MLR and Random Forest were used. Several variants of forecasting the demand for natural gas, with different lengths of the forecast horizon are presented and compared in this research. The results obtained using the MLR, Random Forest, and DNN algorithms show that for the tested input data, the best algorithm for predicting the demand for natural gas is RF. The differences in accuracy of prediction between algorithms were not significant. The research shows the differences in the impact of factors that create the demand for natural gas, as well as the accuracy of the predict... [more]

Gas Hold-Up and Mass Transfer in a Vessel with an Unsteady Rotating Concave Blade Impeller
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gas hold-up, gas-liquid, mass transfer, Mixing, unsteady mixing
The steady mixing of gas-liquid systems is used where a large development of the interfacial area is required. However, the presence of gas in the liquid reduces the efficiency of mass transfer by reducing the mixing power, due to the creation of gas formations behind the impeller blades and the reduction in density. The efficiency of mass transfer can be increased by using a concave blade impeller or unsteady mixing. Mass transfer efficiency studies for these impellers and unsteady mixing are limited. This paper presents an analysis of the influence of the impeller construction on the gas hold-up and volumetric mass transfer coefficient kLa. Impellers with a different number of concave blades, and with alternatively arranged concave blades, were analyzed. The obtained results were compared with the standard flat blade turbine. The obtained results indicate that the arrangement of the concave blades has the greatest effect on reducing the gas hold-up and kLa. Higher values were obtaine... [more]

Numerical Analysis of Thermal Stress for a Stack of Planar Solid Oxide Fuel Cells
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, flow arrangement, Modelling, SOFC stack, thermal stress
In this work, a 3D multi-physics coupled model was developed to analyze the temperature and thermal stress distribution in a planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack, and then the effects of different flow channels (co-flow, counter-flow and cross-flow) and electrolyte thickness were investigated. The simulation results indicate that the generated power is higher while the thermal stress is lower in the co-flow mode than those in the cross-flow mode. In the cross-flow mode, a gas inlet and outlet arrangement is proposed to increase current density by about 10%. The generated power of the stack increases with a thin electrolyte layer, but the temperature and its gradient of the stack also increase with increase of heat generation. The thermal stress for two typical sealing materials is also studied. The predicted results can be used for design and optimization of the stack structure to achieve lower stress and longer life.

Do COVID-19 Lock-Downs Affect Business Cycle? Analysis Using Energy Consumption Cycle Clock for Selected European Countries
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: business cycle clock, consumption of electricity, COVID-19, lockdown, non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs)
On 11 March 2020, the WHO declared the COVID-19 epidemic to be a global pandemic. This was a consequence of the rapid increase in the number of people with positive test results, the increase in deaths due to COVID-19, and the lack of pharmaceutical drugs. Governments introduced national lockdowns, which have impacted both energy consumption and economies. The purpose of this paper is to answer the following question: do COVID-19 lockdowns affect the business cycle? We used the cycle clock approach to assess the magnitude of decrease in electricity consumption in the three waves of the epidemic, namely, April 2020, November 2021, and April 2021. Additionally, we checked the relation between energy consumption and GDP by means of spectral analysis. Results for selected 28 European countries confirm an impact of the introduced non-pharmaceutical interventions on both energy consumption and business cycle. Study on the Influential Factors of CO2 Storage in Low Permeability Reservoir
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, low permeability reservoirs, oil recovery factor, storage capacity
As the demands of tight-oil Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) and the controlling of anthropogenic carbon emission have become global challenges, Carbon Capture Utilization and Sequestration (CCUS) has been recognized as an effective solution to resolve both needs. However, the influential factors of carbon dioxide (CO2) geological storage in low permeability reservoirs have not been fully studied. Based on core samples from the Huang-3 area of the Ordos Basin, the feasibility and influential factors of geological CO2 sequestration in the Huang-3 area are analyzed through caprock breakthrough tests and a CO2 storage factor experiment. The results indicate that capillary trapping is the key mechanism of the sealing effect by the caprock. With the increase of caprock permeability, the breakthrough pressure and pressure difference decreased rapidly. A good exponential relationship between caprock breakthrough pressure and permeability can be summarized. The minimum breakthrough pressure of CO2... [more]

Calculation of Intake Oxygen Concentration through Intake CO2 Measurement and Evaluation of Its Effect on Nitrogen Oxide Prediction Accuracy in a Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: engines, model-based control, nitrogen oxide emissions, oxygen
A new procedure, based on measurement of intake CO2 concentration and ambient humidity was developed and assessed in this study for different diesel engines in order to evaluate the oxygen concentration in the intake manifold. Steady-state and transient datasets were used for this purpose. The method is very fast to implement since it does not require any tuning procedure and it involves just one engine-related input quantity. Moreover, its accuracy is very high since it was found that the absolute error between the measured and predicted intake O2 levels is in the ±0.15% range. The method was applied to verify the performance of a previously developed NOx model under transient operating conditions. This model had previously been adopted by the authors during the IMPERIUM H2020 EU project to set up a model-based controller for a heavy-duty diesel engine. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy storage system, renewable energy sources, supercapacitors
Energy Storage Systems (ESS) are an attractive solution in environments with a high amount of renewable energy sources, as they can improve the power quality in such places and if required, can extend the integration of more renewable sources of energy. If a large amount of power is needed, then supercapacitors are viable energy storage devices due to their specific power, allowing response times that are in the range of milliseconds to seconds. This paper details the design of an ESS that is based on a modular multilevel converter (MMC) with bidirectional power flow, which reduces the number of cascaded stages and allows the supercapacitors SCs to be connected to the grid to perform high-power transfers. A traditional ESS has four main stages or subsystems: the energy storage device, the balancing system, and the DC/DC and DC/AC converters. A Hydrofracturing-Triggered Earthquake Occurred Three Years after the Stimulation
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hydrofracturing, injection-induced seismicity, shale gas
Hydrofracturing, used for shale gas exploitation, may induce felt, even damaging earthquakes. On 15 June 2019, an Mw2.8 earthquake occurred, spatially correlated with the location of earlier exploratory hydrofracturing operations for shale gas in Wysin in Poland. However, this earthquake was atypical. Hydrofracturing-triggered seismicity mainly occurs during stimulation; occasionally, it continues a few months after completion of the stimulation. In Wysin, there were only two weaker events during two-month hydrofracturing and then 35 months of seismic silence until the mentioned earthquake occurred. The Wysin site is in Gdańsk Pomerania broader region, located on the very weakly seismically active Precambrian Platform. The historical documents, covering 1000 years, report no natural earthquakes in Gdańsk Pomerania. We conclude, therefore, that despite the never observed before that long lag time after stimulation, the Mw2.8 earthquake was triggered by hydrofracturing. It is possible th... [more]

Scale Effect on Producing Gaseous and Liquid Chemical Fuels via CO2 Reduction
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, CO, electrochemical, formate, fuel
Producing chemical fuels from sunlight is a sustainable way to utilize solar energy and reduce carbon emissions. Within the current photovoltaic-electrolysis or photoelectrochemical-based solar fuel generation system, electrochemical CO2 reduction is the key step. Although there has been important progress in developing new materials and devices, scaling up electrochemical CO2 reduction is essential to promote the industrial application of this technology. In this work, we use Ag and In as the representative electrocatalyst for producing gas and liquid products in both small and big electrochemical cells. We find that gas production is blocked more easily than liquid products when scaling up the electrochemical cell. Simulation results show that the generated gas product, CO, forms bubbles on the surface of the electrocatalyst, thus blocking the transport of CO2, while there is no such trouble for producing the liquid product such as formate. Physicochemical Properties of Torrefied and Pyrolyzed Food Waste Biochars as Fuel: A Pilot-Scale Study
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: biochar, demineralization, food waste, pyrolysis, torrefaction
Food waste is an important constituent of municipal solid waste, and research has been conducted to develop various methods for treating food waste and recycling it (e.g., fuel, landfilling, composting, conversion into animal feed, drying, and carbonization). Among these, the drying and carbonization techniques can change food waste into fuel; however, they need more energy than fermentation and anaerobic digestion procedures. In this study, we investigated the physicochemical properties of food waste biochar produced under torrefaction (270 °C) and pyrolysis (450 °C) conditions to establish its applicability as fuel by comparing temperatures, residence times, and conditions before and after demineralization. The higher heating value increased after the demineralization process under both temperature conditions (270 °C and 450 °C), and the chlorine level was lower at 270 °C temperature demineralization than at 450 °C.
