Fanel Dorel Scheaua
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 3D modeling, air flow, Bach type, Benesh type, Computational Fluid Dynamics, rotor, wind action, wind turbine
In this work, 3D models in classic configuration of Bach and Benesh rotor type, as well as models with modified blade pattern geometry were analyzed from the air circulation point of view inside the rotor enclosure in order to identify the operating parameters differences according to rotor geometric modified configuration. Constructive design aspects are presented, as well as results obtained from the virtual model analysis in terms of circulation velocity and pressure values which enhance rotor operation related to torque and power coefficients. The rotors design pattern is made according to previous results obtained by different researchers who have performed numerical analysis on virtual models and tests on the experimental rotor models using the wind tunnel. The constructive solutions are describing two-bladed rotor models, in four new designed constructive variants and analyzed using ANSYS CFX. The air velocity specific values, static and total pressure recorded at the rotor blad... [more]

Keywords: adiabatic calorimetry, finite-element method, heat capacity, heat transfer, numerical simulation
This research obtains a mathematical formulation to determine the heat transfer in a transient state, in a calorimeter cell, considering an adiabatic system. The development of the cell was established and the mathematical model was transiently solved, which approximated the physical phenomenon under the cell operation. A numerical method for complex geometries was used to validate performance. The results obtained in the transient heat transfer in a cylinder under boundary and initial conditions were compared using an analytical solution and numerical analysis employing the finite-element method with commercial software. The study from the temperature distribution can afford, selection between a cylindrical and spherical geometry, design criteria that are generated by changing parameters such as dimension, temperature, and working fluids to develop an adiabatic calorimeter to measure the heat capacity in fluids. We show the mathematical solution with its initial and boundary condition... [more]

Keywords: building performance, building simulation, energy retrofit, green walls, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, thermal behavior, urban quality
The green wall is an engineered technology for stormwater management and climate change mitigation at the urban level. At the building scale, these energy efficiency measures are suitable for improving indoor comfort conditions and for reducing energy needs. Several guidelines are available about vertical greening systems, but these propose design parameters and performance evaluation criteria, often incomparable. In order to facilitate the implementation of proper technical standards, this paper proposes a critical review of more recent scientific investigations. All parameters for the design optimization are discussed as well as the achievable social and private benefits by taking into consideration the type of study (numerical or experimental), the climate conditions, the analysis period, all technical requirements of the green layer as well as of the back wall. The review underlines that a multi-criteria design approach is needed for green vertical systems. Thus, the paper is concl... [more]

Keywords: aerodynamic, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), Genetic Algorithm, horizontal-axis wind turbine (HAWT), Optimization
The performance of a wind turbine is affected by wind conditions and blade shape. This study aimed to optimize the performance of a 20 kW horizontal-axis wind turbine (HAWT) under local wind conditions at Deniliquin, New South Wales, Australia. Ansys Fluent (version 18.2, Canonsburg, PA, USA) was used to investigate the aerodynamic performance of the HAWT. The effects of four Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes turbulence models on predicting the flows under separation condition were examined. The transition SST model had the best agreement with the NREL CER data. Then, the aerodynamic shape of the rotor was optimized to maximize the annual energy production (AEP) in the Deniliquin region. Statistical wind analysis was applied to define the Weibull function and scale parameters which were 2.096 and 5.042 m/s, respectively. The HARP_Opt (National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Golden, CO, USA) was enhanced with design variables concerning the shape of the blade, rated rotational speed, and pi... [more]

April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Machine Learning, reanalysis, wind power simulation, wind power time series
Driven by climatic processes, wind power generation is inherently variable. Long-term simulated wind power time series are therefore an essential component for understanding the temporal availability of wind power and its integration into future renewable energy systems. In the recent past, mainly power curve-based models such as Renewables.ninja (RN) have been used for deriving synthetic time series for wind power generation, despite their need for accurate location information and bias correction, as well as their insufficient replication of extreme events and short-term power ramps. In this paper, we assessed how time series generated by machine learning models (MLMs) compare to RN in terms of their ability to replicate the characteristics of observed nationally aggregated wind power generation for Germany. Hence, we applied neural networks to one wind speed input dataset derived from MERRA2 reanalysis with no location information and two with additional location information. The re... [more]

Keywords: energy community, energy modelling, multi-level perspective, sustainable transition, transition management, urban building energy modelling, urban scale energy modelling
Mainstreaming energy communities has been one of the main challenges in the low-carbon transition of cities. In this sense, urban building energy modelling (UBEM) has an untapped role in enabling energy communities, as simulations on urban models provide evidence-based decision support to reduce risks, engage, motivate and guide actors, assert wider policy goals and regulatory requirements. This accelerating role and the potential of UBEM is not sufficiently understood, as research into energy community focuses on its barriers and impacts, while the research of UBEM is mainly technologically oriented. This review takes a sociotechnical approach to explore whether UBEM is a technological trigger for energy communities, furthering the conceptual framework of transition management. factors influencing energy community progression in different use-cases and stages of their lifecycle are compiled to assess the affordances of distinct capabilities of prevalent UBEM tools. Keywords: piezoelectric, ring bender, servovalve, SimScape
In part I of this study, we experimentally and numerically investigated the pilot stage of a novel two-stage servovalve architecture. The novelty of the proposed configuration is the torque motor being removed and replaced with two small two-way two-position (2/2) valves actuated by piezoelectric ring benders, which can effectively control the opening degree of a main spool valve. With this novel architecture, the typical drawbacks of two-stage servovalves can be overcome, such as the high complexity of the torque motor and the high internal leakage in the pilot stage when the main valve is at rest in the neutral position (null). The low complexity and the negligible internal leakage of the piezo-valves are accompanied by the high response speed typical of piezoelectric actuators. The valve assessment is completed in the present study, since the entire valve architecture (main stage + pilot stage) is investigated. In particular, a simplified numerical model is developed to provide a de... [more]
Assessment of Wind Turbine Aero-Hydro-Servo-Elastic Modelling on the Effects of Mooring Line Tension via Deep Learning
Zi Lin, Xiaolei Liu
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep learning, FOWT, mooring line tension
As offshore wind turbines are moving to deeper water depths, mooring systems are becoming more and more significant for floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs). Mooring line failures could affect power generations of FOWTs and ultimately incur risk to nearby structures. Among different failure mechanics, an excessive mooring line tension is one of the most essential factors contributing to mooring failure. Even advanced sensing offers an effective way of failure detections, but it is still difficult to comprehend why failures happened. Unlike traditional parametric studies that are computational and time-intensive, this paper applies deep learning to investigate the major driven force on the mooring line tension. A number of environmental conditions are considered, ranging from cut in to cut out wind speeds. Before formatting input data into the deep learning model, a FOWT model of dynamics was simulated under pre-defined environmental conditions. Both taut and slack mooring configurat... [more]

In this work, the real-time mathematical models of electromechanical power systems with semiconductor converters based on the author’s method of the average voltages in the integration step are described. As well as the theoretical basics of the method, the algebraization algorithm of differential equations on a time quantum is described. This time quantum in the hybrid model is synchronized with the time quanta of signal samples of the physical part of the model. In the hybrid model, only algebraic equations of electromechanical power systems are present. Software and technical applications of the hybrid models of energy-generating blocks for selected thermal and nuclear power plants are described. In the process curve courses obtained and projected in this paper, the author’s hybrid models are illustrated. In the existing models, the nonlinearity of the electric machines and the semiconductor converters are taken into account. The numerical stability of the method of average voltages... [more]

April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: estimation delay reduction technique, frequency estimation, revised three-level discrete Fourier transform, sine filter
In this paper, a frequency estimation method based on a revised three-level discrete Fourier transform (DFT) with an estimation delay reduction technique is proposed. First, the input signal passes through a sine filter twice to improve the ability to decrease the level of harmonics and inter-harmonics. Secondly, the second sine-filtered signal is decomposed into two orthogonal components by DFT with a hamming window to enhance the ability to suppress inter-harmonics. The frequency of the signal is derived using orthogonal components without a zero-crossing problem, which can cause numerical estimation error. This process causes the estimation delay of three cycles and three samples in total. Therefore, the estimation delay reduction technique compensating for the phase delay of the phasor is proposed. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, several frequency changes were considered when the test signals were generated according to the IEEE PMU Standards C37.118.1a-2014. Th... [more]

An efficient participation of prosumers in power system management depends on the quality of information they can obtain. Prosumers actions can be performed by automated agents that are operating in time-changing environments. Additionally, the adaptation techniques, forgetting mechanisms, and learning strategies employed to handle these issues are explored. Accordingly, an approach is proposed to adapt the prosumer agent models to overcome the gradual and sudden concept drift concurrently. The suggested method is based on triggered adaptation techniques and performance-based forgetting mechanism. Energy consumption forecasting is of prime importance for the restructured environment of energy management in the electricity market. Accurate energy consumption forecasting is essential for efficient energy management in the smart grid (SG); however, the energy consumption pattern is non-linear with a high level of uncertainty and volatility. Forecasting such complex patterns requires accurate and fast forecasting models. In this paper, a novel hybrid electrical energy consumption forecasting model is proposed based on a deep learning model known as factored conditional restricted Boltzmann machine (FCRBM). The deep learning-based FCRBM model uses a rectified linear unit (ReLU) activation function and a multivariate autoregressive technique for the network training. The proposed model predicts future electrical energy consumption for efficient energy management in the SG. The proposed model is a novel hybrid model comprising four modules: (i) data processing and features selection mo... [more]

Keywords: combustion, Computational Fluid Dynamics, experimental validation, genetic algorithms, optimized, recirculation, swirler
Recirculation in a combustion chamber is required for stabilizing the flame and reducing pollutants. The swirlers can generate recirculation in a combustion chamber, inducing a swirling flow that breaks vorticity and improves the mixing of air and fuel. The swirl number (Sn) is related to the formation of recirculation in conditions of high-intensity flows with Sn > 0.6. Thus, the optimized design of a swirler is necessary to generate enough turbulence that keeps the flame stable. We present the optimized design of a swirler considering the main parameters for a non-premixed combustion chamber. This optimization is made with genetic algorithms to ensure the generation of a recirculation zone in the combustion chamber. This recirculation phenomenon is simulated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models and applying the renormalization group (RNG) k-ε turbulence method. The chemistry is parameterized as a function of the mixture fraction and dissipation rate. A CFD comparison of a... [more]

Keywords: Asian countries, energy intensity, non-linear model, quantile-on-quantile
The objective of the current examination is to identify the dynamic relationship between the textile industry and energy intensity. The study evaluates the asymmetric impact of textile manufacturing on energy intensity in leading Asian economies based on textile dominance. China, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand, Japan and Vietnam are dominant in textile manufacturing. In the present study we used yearly textiles and clothing data from top ten selected Asian textile manufacturing countries from 1990 to 2018. The results of quantile-on-quantile regression (QQ) confirmed that textiles and clothing (T&C) production have a positive and significant impact on energy intensity in all countries. The results further suggested that a low level of T&C production increases the level of energy intensity in all selected countries. On the other hand, the results of Granger causality in quantiles confirm a bidirectional causal relationship between T&C production... [more]

The vertical sinter cooling bed (VSCB) is a high-efficiency energy-saving and environmentally friendly waste heat recovery equipment. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) convection model was established to reveal the typical factors on the thermodynamic performance in VSCB. Indeed, a multiple performance optimal algorithm based on the Taguchi-grey relational analysis (GRA) method was first applied to investigate the effects of geometric and operational factors, including the diameter of the bed, height of the bed, air mass flow rate, air inlet temperature, and sinter mass flow rate, on improving the heat transfer (Ex) and hydrodynamic performance (Pdrop) and obtain the optimum combination of each factor in VSCB. The results found that the diameter of the bed was the most influential factor contributing the multiple types of performance with a contribution rate of 70.51%, followed by the air mass flow rate (15.84%), while the height of the bed (0.27%) exerted a limited e... Keywords: air conditioning, demand-side management, India, market value, power sector modelling, renewable electricity integration, wind and solar PV
An Indian electricity system with very high shares of solar photovoltaics seems to be a plausible future given the ever-falling solar photovoltaic (PV) costs, recent Indian auction prices, and governmental support schemes. However, the variability of solar PV electricity, i.e., the seasonal, daily, and other weather-induced variations, could create an economic barrier. In this paper, we analyzed a strategy to overcome this barrier with demand-side management (DSM) by lending flexibility to the rapidly increasing electricity demand for air conditioning through either precooling or chilled water storage. With an open-source power sector model, we estimated the endogenous investments into and the hourly dispatching of these demand-side options for a broad range of potential PV shares in the Indian power system in 2040. We found that both options reduce the challenges of variability by shifting electricity demand from the evening peak to midday, thereby reducing the temporal mismatch of de... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, icing simulation, modelling of ice accretion, wind turbine icing
When operating in cold climates, wind turbines are vulnerable to ice accretion. The main impact of icing on wind turbines is the power losses due to geometric deformation of the iced airfoils of the blades. Significant energy losses during the wind farm lifetime must be estimated and mitigated. Finding solutions for icing calls on several areas of knowledge. Modelling and simulation as an alternative to experimental tests are primary techniques used to account for ice accretion because of their low cost and effectiveness. Several studies have been conducted to replicate ice growth on wind turbine blades using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) during the last decade. While inflight icing research is well developed and well documented, wind turbine icing is still in development and has its peculiarities. This paper surveys and discusses the models, approaches and methods used in ice accretion modelling in view of their application in wind energy while summarizing the recent research fin... [more]

Keywords: multiphase flow, numerical simulation, oil–water stratified pipe flow, turbulence model, two-phase flow
In the petrochemical industry, multiphase flow, including oil−water two-phase stratified laminar flow, is more common and can be easily obtained through mathematical analysis. However, there is limited mathematical analytical model for the simulation of oil−water flow under turbulent flow. This paper introduces a two-dimensional (2D) numerical simulation method to investigate the pressure gradient, flow field, and oil−water interface height of a pipeline cross-section of horizontal tube in an oil−water stratified smooth flow. Three Reynolds average N−S equation models (k−ε, k−ω, SST k−ω) are involved to simulate oil−water stratified smooth flow according to the finite volume method. The pressure gradient and oil−water interface height can be computed according to the given volume flow rate using the iteration method. The predicted result of oil−water interface height and velocity profile by the model fit well with several published experimental data, except that there is a large error... [more]

Keywords: large eddy simulation (LES), rotor aerodynamics, unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (uRANS) simulation, vorticity, wake aerodynamics, wind turbine
This work presents a comparison study of the CFD modeling with two different turbulence modeling approaches viz. unsteady RANS and LES, on a full-scale model of the (New) MEXICO rotor wind turbine. The main emphasis of the paper is on the rotor and wake aerodynamics. Simulations are carried out for the three wind speeds considered in the MEXICO experiment (10, 15, and 24 ms−1). The results of uRANS and LES are compared against the (New) MEXICO experimental measurements of pressure distributions, axial, radial, and azimuth traverse of three velocity components. The near wake characteristics and vorticity are also analyzed. The pressure distribution results show that the LES can predict the onset of flow separation more accurately than uRANS when the turbine operates in the stall condition. The LES can compute the flow structures in wake significantly better than the uRANS for the stall condition of the blade. For the design condition, the mean absolute error in axial and radial velocity... [more]

Keywords: complex network, extreme weather, functional vulnerability, reliability, topology modeling
The large-scale interconnection of the power grid has brought great benefits to social development, but simultaneously, the frequency of large-scale fault accidents caused by extreme weather is also rocketing. The power grid is regarded as a representative complex network in this paper to analyze its functional vulnerability. First, the actual power grid topology is modeled on the basis of the complex network theory, which is transformed into a directed-weighted topology model after introducing the node voltage together with line reactance. Then, the algorithm of weighted reactance betweenness is proposed by analyzing the characteristic parameters of the power grid topology model. The product of unit reliability and topology model’s characteristic parameters under extreme weather is used as the index to measure the functional vulnerability of the power grid, which considers the extreme weather of freezing and gale and quantifies the functional vulnerability of lines under wind load, ic... April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrical stress, insulation, MVMF transformer, pulse voltage
This paper proposes an equivalent circuit model to obtain the transient electrical stress quantitatively in medium voltage medium frequency transformers in modern power electronics. To verify this model, transient simulation is performed on a 1.5 kV/1 kHz transformer, revealing voltage overshoot quantitatively between turns and layers of the transformer’s HV winding. Effects of rise time of the input pulse voltage, stray capacitance of the winding insulation, and their interactions on the voltage overshot magnitude are presented. With these results, we propose limiting the voltage overshoot and, thereafter, enhancing medium voltage medium frequency transformer’s insulation capability, which throws light on the transformer’s insulation design. Additionally, guidance on the future studies on aging and endurance lifetime of the medium voltage medium frequency transformer’s insulation could be given.

Keywords: arc-quenching gap, explosion airflow, lightning breakage accidents, power frequency arc, transmission lines
With the increase in the voltage level and number of transmission lines, the probability of lightning strikes on transmission lines is significantly increased, while lightning breakage accidents occur frequently. Therefore, an explosion airflow arc-quenching gap for 110 kV transmission lines was developed based on the idea of rapid extinction. A mathematical model of the detonation wave based on the CJ (Chapman−Jouget) detonation wave theory was developed to calculate the detonation air pressure and analyze its influencing factors. ANSYS software and the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model were used to simulate the process of detonation airflow coupled with an arc, and the simulation results indicated that the power frequency arc was evidently suppressed with the influence of airflow, which can effectively prevent arcing. A combined impulse and power frequency test and arc-quenching tests were performed to verify the effectiveness of the arc-quenching gap. The results of the combined test... [more]
