Jin Yan, Xiaofeng Lu, Xiong Zheng, Rui Xue, Xiujian Lei, Xuchen Fan, Shirong Liu
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFB, dispersion coefficient, flue gas composition, heat balance
The dispersion characteristics of fuel particles over the bed have always been a key consideration in the design of fluidized beds. However, the lateral fuel dispersion coefficients (Dsr) reported in the previous literature widely ranged from 10−4 to 10−1 m2/s, which were hard to be directly applied in large-scale CFB (circulating fluidized bed) boilers with wider bed width (close to 30 m) and variable coal feeding modes. To solve this problem, field tests were conducted on the first 600 MW CFB boiler in this paper, and the distributions of flue gas composition and flue gas temperature were obtained near the coal feeding port under four working conditions. The dispersion characteristics of fuel particles were analyzed in detail combined with the dispersion model. In addition, a new method based on bed heat balance was also proposed to estimate Dsr and applied in a 300 MW CFB boiler with a different coal feeding mode. The results revealed that Dsr through the local heat balance method r... [more]

Keywords: coefficient of performance, compressor discharge pressure, energy efficient, heat pump dryer, moisture content, oregano
The current study shows an empirical analysis to establish the effects of the variations in compressor discharge pressure on the drying performance of aromatic herbs, in terms of the coefficient of performance (CoP), moisture content (MC), specific moisture extraction rate (SMER), drying temperature, drying time and energy consumption. In conducting the research, a heat pump drying system was utilized as a mechanism for dehydrating herbs, seeds, and fruits. It was used thanks to its benefits like higher efficiency and its low power consumption. Three levels of discharge pressure were considered, 1380 kPa, 1100 kPa, and 827 kPa, using 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (R134a) as a refrigerant and oregano leaves as the main product. The findings show that, concerning the same oregano moisture sample, the lower the compressor discharge pressure, the lower drying temperature, also, the higher drying time was obtained. Despite the fact that the CoP decreased with the compressor discharge pressure,... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biodiesel, biofuel, misting, oil, purification, quality, washing
The increasing use of alternative energy sources has brought benefits like the recycling of waste vegetable oils (WVO) for biodiesel production; however, this practice presents challenges derived from a highly variable raw matter. Our research focused on the washing techniques usually employed by small to medium scale producers which may lack the infrastructure to perform high-grade purification and often relay on the employment of “artisanal” technology. We report biodiesel production from pure canola oil (C1) and a mix of soybean/canola oil (C2) as well as WVO from sample C2 with high free fatty acid content (2.7 FFA %) oil. We selected seven quality tests: pH determination, cloud, pour and flash point, acid number (AN), water/sediments and soap content considering the most commonly failed checkpoints in biodiesel production. From the use of four washing techniques, we determined that the sawdust filtration had the highest recovering yield with 89%. The majority of the washed biodies... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: lattice structures, steel structures, towers, tubular towers, wind turbines
Renewable energy is expected to experience epic growth in the coming decade, which is reflected in the record new installations since 2010. Wind energy, in particular, has proved its leading role among sustainable energy production means, by the accelerating rise in total installed capacity and by its consistently increasing trend. Taking a closer look at the history of wind power development, it is obvious that it has always been a matter of engineering taller turbines with longer blades. An increase in the tower height means an increase in the material used, thereby, impacting the initial construction cost and the total energy consumed. In the present study, a numerical investigation is carried out in order to actively compare conventional cylindrical shell towers with lattice towers in terms of material use, robustness and environmental impact. Lattice structures are proved to be equivalently competitive to conventional cylindrical solutions since they can be designed to be robust e... [more]

Keywords: composite measure, energy sustainability, Hellwig method, MCDM, SAW, synthetic indicator, TOPSIS, WASPAS
One of the basic objectives of the European Union’s energy policy is to obtain and use energy in a sustainable way. Multiple-criteria decision making (MCDM) methods, in particular linear ordering based on the synthetic variable procedure, are used for comparative analyses of the level of energy sustainability. Despite many studies, the problem of choosing the optimal ordering method is still not fully resolved. This paper presents an original procedure that facilitates the selection of an effective method of the linear ordering of multi-feature objects for the evaluation of sustainable energy development of regions. What is understood as the effective ordering of regions is not only the effective ranking of objects but also their effective clustering. In order to obtain the best results of linear ordering, the authors put forward a multi-stage optimization of the selection of the method of ordering and normalization of diagnostic variables. Analysis of variance was used for the assessm... [more]

Keywords: capture power, evaluation flow velocity, periodic time-varying, tidal current energy, turbine
Aiming at the performance evaluation problem of tidal energy turbines in the application of periodic time-varying flow velocity, with the goal of maximizing the efficiency of energy harvesting in practical applications, an evaluation system combining the characteristics of flow velocity changes in practical applications is proposed. After long-term monitoring of tidal current flow velocity in the applied sea area, the actual measured tidal current periodic flow velocity is divided into several flow velocity segments by using statistical segmentation, and the evaluation flow velocity of each flow velocity segment and its time proportion in the tidal current cycle are obtained. A test device with constant torque regulation is built, and capture power tests of different torque loads are carried out under each evaluation flow rate. After comparison, the maximum captured power at each evaluation flow rate is determined. We calculate the weight based on the time proportion of each evaluation... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: district heating, economic analysis, high-temperature heat pumps, hot water boilers, renewable energy sources
The article presents an original and innovative technical solution for the exploitation of low-temperature excess heat from hot water boilers that use gas or liquid fuel for the needs of high-temperature heating in buildings or in industry. The primary fuel efficiency used for hot water boilers can be significantly increased by utilizing the excess low-temperature heat of flue gases that are discharged into the environment and thus also reduce CO2 emissions. Hot water systems usually operate at higher temperatures of the heating water, which is transported to the heat consumer via supply pipe, and the cooled heating water is returned to the hot water boiler via the return pipe. For the excess low-temperature heat exploitation of the flue gases from hot water boiler, it is necessary to install a condenser in the flue gas discharge pipe, where condensation of water vapour present in the flue gas heats water or a mixture of water and glycol. The heating water, which is cooled and returned... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: multi-task learning, photovoltaic energy, support vector regression, wind energy
Given the impact of renewable sources in the overall energy production, accurate predictions are becoming essential, with machine learning becoming a very important tool in this context. In many situations, the prediction problem can be divided into several tasks, more or less related between them but each with its own particularities. Multitask learning (MTL) aims to exploit this structure, training several models at the same time to improve on the results achievable either by a common model or by task-specific models. In this paper, we show how an MTL approach based on support vector regression can be applied to the prediction of photovoltaic and wind energy, problems where tasks can be defined according to different criteria. As shown experimentally with three different datasets, the MTL approach clearly outperforms the results of the common and specific models for photovoltaic energy, and are at the very least quite competitive for wind energy.

Keywords: hydrogen storage, microwave synthesis, ZIF-7
We report here fast (15 min) microwave-assisted solvothermal synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate framework material (ZIF-7). We have optimized solvent composition to achieve high porosity and hydrogen capacity and narrow particle size distribution. It was shown that synthesis in N,N-diethylformamide (DEF) results in a layered ZIF-7 III phase, while N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvent leads to a pure ZIF-7 phase in microwave conditions. A mixture of toluene with DMF allows the production of pure ZIF-7 material only with the triethylamine additive. Obtained materials were comprehensively characterized. We have pointed out that both X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy could be used for the identification of ZIF-7 or ZIF-7 III phases. Although samples obtained in DMF, and in a mixture of DMF, toluene, and triethylamine were assigned to the pure ZIF-7 phase, solvent composition significantly affected the size of particles in the material and nitrogen and hydrogen adsorption process... Keywords: cross laminated timber (CLT), energy consumption, operative temperature, overheating phenomenon, residential buildings
As the climate changed in recent years, an increase in summer indoor temperatures in severe cold and cold regions of China has started to affect thermal comfort. However, the local design standard for energy efficiency does not recognize this phenomenon. This paper reports the potential overheating phenomenon in residential buildings and examines the rationale for the current thermal designs adopted in severe cold and cold regions of China. In this study, the two most commonly used building materials, reinforced concrete (RC) and cross laminated timber (CLT), are used separately in the design of an 18-story residential building envelope located in six different cities in the severe cold and cold regions. The energy consumption and indoor operative temperatures during the operation of these buildings are simulated using Integrated Environmental Solutions Virtual Environment (IES VE). The results demonstrate that both the RC and the CLT buildings experience varying degrees of overheating... [more]

Keywords: battery life, droop control, frequency regulation, hybrid energy storage system, renewable energy sources, SOC feedback, state-of-health, supercapacitor
The paper proposes a coordinated operation method of two independent storages for managing state-of-charge (SOC) and for providing ancillary service concerning frequency regulation (FR); furthermore, this article also introduces the power allocation scheme between two storages in consideration of the coverage of the frequency band for each storage along with the SOC management scheme of the supercapacitor and battery. We also provide a guideline for the storage sizing on the basis of the smoothing time constant. Additionally, we verify the advantage of the HESS in extending the lifetime of the battery, which is estimated by a real-time state-of-health (SOH) calculation method. The Bode plot of the proposed method is analyzed to observe the power spectrum coverage in the frequency domain through the case studies using PSCAD/EMTDC and MATLAB.

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Japan, offshore wind, offshore wind potential, regional analysis
This study presents an approach for estimating the offshore wind potential of Japan. Bathymetry data (1 km mesh) and near shore wind speed data of the year 2018 were used to assess the potential. A turbine with a peak power of 10.6 MW was employed for the analysis. The potential was calculated for multiple regions. These regions are based on the service areas of the major electricity supply companies in Japan. Overall, the results show that Japan has the potential to produce up to 32,028 PJ electricity per year. The electricity demand of 2018 amounts to 3231 PJ. The potential is therefore large enough to cover Japan’s electricity needs ten-times over. The capacity that could theoretically be installed amounts to 2720 GW, which is a multiple of the current worldwide installed capacity of 29.1 GW (2019). In addition to the huge potential, the regional assessment shows that the regions vary greatly in their potential; of all the considered regions, Hokkaido and Kyushu have the highest ove... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ARDL, COVID-19, crude oil, energy shock, Natural Gas
The COVID-19 pandemic storm has struck the world economies and energy markets with extreme strength. The goal of our study is to assess how the pandemic has influenced oil and gas prices, using energy market reactions in the United States and Japan. To investigate the impact of the COVID-19 cases on the crude oil and natural gas markets, we applied the Auto-Regressive Distributive Lag (ARDL) approach to the number of the US and Japanese COVID-19 cases and energy prices. Our study period is from 21 January 2020 to 2 June 2020, and uses the latest data available at the time of model calibration and captures the so-called “first pandemic wave”. In the US, the COVID-19 pandemic had a statistically negative impact on the crude oil price while it positively affected the gas price. In Japan, this negative impact was only apparent in the crude oil market with a two-day lag. Possible explanations of the results may include differences in pandemic development in the US and Japan, and the diverse... [more]

Keywords: energy geo structures, energy piles, foundation bed GHE, foundation GHE, ground heat exchanger, thermo active structures
Shallow Geothermal Energy Systems (SGESs) constitute Renewable Energy Systems (RES), which find application in the residential sector through the use of Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs). GSHPs are associated with Ground Heat Exchangers (GHEs), whereby heat is gained/lost through a network of tubes into the ground. GSHPs have failed to flourish in the RES market due to their high initial costs and long payback periods. In this study, the use of Energy Geo-Structure (EGS) systems, namely, the foundation (or energy) piles and the foundation bed of a residential building in Cyprus, was computationally modeled in the COMSOL Multiphysics software. First, the single-houses’ trend in number of units and area in Cyprus was examined and a theoretically typical house with nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) characteristics was considered. The heating and cooling loads were estimated in the TRNSYS software environment and used as inputs to investigate the performance of the GSHP/GHE systems. Both s... [more]

Keywords: dual use, energy water nexus, floating photovoltaic, floatovoltaic, FPV, photovoltaic, solar energy, Water, water conservation
A potential solution to the coupled water−energy−food challenges in land use is the concept of floating photovoltaics or floatovoltaics (FPV). In this study, a new approach to FPV is investigated using a flexible crystalline silicon-based photovoltaic (PV) module backed with foam, which is less expensive than conventional pontoon-based FPV. This novel form of FPV is tested experimentally for operating temperature and performance and is analyzed for water-savings using an evaporation calculation adapted from the Penman−Monteith model. The results show that the foam-backed FPV had a lower operating temperature than conventional pontoon-based FPV, and thus a 3.5% higher energy output per unit power. Therefore, foam-based FPV provides a potentially profitable means of reducing water evaporation in the world’s at-risk bodies of fresh water. The case study of Lake Mead found that if 10% of the lake was covered with foam-backed FPV, there would be enough water conserved and electricity genera... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: decision-making process, literature review, low carbon technology adoption, residential photovoltaic, social influence
Despite the intensive research on residential photovoltaic adoption, there is a lack of understanding regarding the social dynamics that drive adoption decisions. Innovation diffusion is a social process, whereby communication structures and the relations between sender and receiver influence what information is perceived and how it is interpreted. This paper addresses this research gap by investigating stakeholder influences in household decision-making from a procedural perspective, so-called stakeholder dynamics. A literature review derives major influence dynamics which are then synthesized based on egocentric network maps for distinct process stages. The findings show a multitude of stakeholders that can be relevant in influencing photovoltaic adoption decisions of owner-occupied households. Household decision-makers are mainly influenced by stakeholders of their social network like family, neighbors, and friends as well as PV-related services like providers and civil society grou... Jia Guo, Liping Lei
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: actuator line model, flow characteristics, pitch regulation, vertical axis wind turbine
Currently, vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT) are considered as an alternative technology to horizontal axis wind turbines in specific wind conditions, such as offshore farms. However, complex unsteady wake structures of VAWTs exert a significant influence on performance of wind turbines and wind farms. In the present study, instantaneous flow fields around and downstream of an innovative VAWT with inclined pitch axes are simulated by an actuator line model. Unsteady flow characteristics around the wind turbine with variations of azimuthal angles are discussed. Several fluid parameters are then evaluated on horizontal and vertical planes under conditions of various fold angles and incline angles. Results show that the total estimated wind energy in the shadow of the wind turbine with an incline angle of 30° and 150° is 4.6% higher than that with an incline angle of 90°. In this way, appropriate arrangements of wind turbines with various incline angles have the potential to obtain more... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat pump, residential building, rule-based control, self-consumption, thermal energy storage, virtual battery
The use of photovoltaic (PV) energy in combination with heat pump systems for heating and cooling of residential buildings can lead to renewable energy self-consumption, reducing the energy required from the grid and the carbon footprint of the building uses. However, energy storage technologies and control strategies are essential to enhance the self-consumption level. This paper proposes and analyzes a new control strategy for the operation of a modulating air-source heat pump, based on the actual PV availability. The solar energy surplus is stored as thermal energy by the use of water tanks and the activation of the thermal capacitance of the building. The efficacy of the control strategy is evaluated considering different rule-based strategies, and different boundary conditions. The effect of climate data, building insulation level and thermal inertia are investigated and compared. The results show the efficacy of the proposed strategy to decrease up to 17% the amount of electricit... [more]

Keywords: ARDL, Azerbaijan, economic growth, energy consumption, energy prices, financial development, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, VECM
This article analyzed the relationship between financial development, renewable energy consumption, economic growth, and energy prices in Azerbaijan by employing time series data for the time span of 1993−2015. The autoregressive distributed lagged (ARDL) technique was applied in empirical estimations, because it performs better than all the alternative techniques in small samples, which was the case here in this article. The results of estimation found that there is a positive and statistically significant influence of financial development and economic growth on renewable energy consumption, whereas the prices of energy proxied by CPI have an adverse impact on renewable energy consumption in Azerbaijan. Also, estimation results demonstrated that a 1% rise in financial development, proxied by domestic credit as a percentage of GDP, and economic growth increase renewable energy consumption by 0.16% and 0.60%, respectively. The different financial development impacts on renewable energy... [more]

Keywords: electromechanical dynamics, electromechanical loop correlation ratio (ELCR), FCWG dynamic correlation ratio (FDCR), FCWG dynamics, quasi- electromechanical loop correlation ratio (QELCR), strong interaction
Previous studies generally consider that the full converter-based wind power generation (FCWG) is a “decoupled” power source from the grid, which hardly participates in electromechanical oscillations. However, it was found recently that strong interaction could be induced which might incur severe resonance incidents in the electromechanical dynamic timescale. In this paper, the participation of FCWG in electromechanical dynamics is extensively investigated, and particularly, an unusual transition of the electromechanical oscillation mode (EOM) is uncovered for the first time. The detailed mathematical models of the open-loop and closed-loop power systems are firstly established, and modal analysis is employed to quantify the FCWG participation in electromechanical dynamics, with two new mode identification criteria, i.e., FCWG dynamics correlation ratio (FDCR) and quasi-electromechanical loop correlation ratio (QELCR). On this basis, the impact of different wind penetration levels and... [more]

Keywords: electric vehicles, hybrid battery thermal management system, Li-ion battery
The Li-ion battery is of paramount importance to electric vehicles (EVs). Propelled by the rapid growth of the EV industry, the performance of the battery is continuously improving. However, Li-ion batteries are susceptible to the working temperature and only obtain the optimal performance within an acceptable temperature range. Therefore, a battery thermal management system (BTMS) is required to ensure EVs’ safe operation. There are various basic methods for BTMS, including forced-air cooling, liquid cooling, phase change material (PCM), heat pipe (HP), thermoelectric cooling (TEC), etc. Every method has its unique application condition and characteristic. Furthermore, based on basic BTMS, more hybrid cooling methods adopting different basic methods are being designed to meet EVs’ requirements. In this work, the hybrid BTMS, as a more reliable and environmentally friendly method for the EVs, will be compared with basic BTMS to reveal its advantages and potential. By analyzing its cost...
