April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: absorption heat pump, design power, heating load characteristics, waste heat recovery
In northern China, many thermal power plants use absorption heat pump to recover low-grade heat from turbine exhaust steam due to the irreplaceable advantages of the absorption heat pump in waste heat recovery. In the process of designing a waste heat recovery system, few researchers have considered the relationship between the design power of the heat pump and the actual heating load of the heating network. Based on the heating load characteristics, this paper puts forward a design idea which uses an absorption heat pump to recover waste heat from a steam turbine exhaust for heating supply. The operation mode of the system for different design powers of the heat pump was stated. An economic analysis model of the waste heat recovery system was proposed, and the optimal design power of the heat pump could be obtained. For a specific unit, the corresponding waste heat recovery system was designed, and various factors affecting the economy of the system were discussed and analyzed in deta... [more]

Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Optimal Route and Charging Station Selection
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: deep reinforcement learning, electric vehicle, electric vehicle charging navigation system, electric vehicle charging station, intelligent transport system, Markov decision process
This paper proposes an optimal route and charging station selection (RCS) algorithm based on model-free deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to overcome the uncertainty issues of the traffic conditions and dynamic arrival charging requests. The proposed DRL based RCS algorithm aims to minimize the total travel time of electric vehicles (EV) charging requests from origin to destination using the selection of the optimal route and charging station considering dynamically changing traffic conditions and unknown future requests. In this paper, we formulate this RCS problem as a Markov decision process model with unknown transition probability. A Deep Q network has been adopted with function approximation to find the optimal electric vehicle charging station (EVCS) selection policy. To obtain the feature states for each EVCS, we define the traffic preprocess module, charging preprocess module and feature extract module. The proposed DRL based RCS algorithm is compared with conventional strateg... [more]

Emission and Neutralization of Methane from a Municipal Landfill-Parametric Analysis
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cogeneration, degassing installation, landfill gas, landfill site, municipal waste, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
An attempt was made to estimate the annual production of CH4 at a municipal waste landfill site in Poland. As a matter of fact, the extent of the unorganized emission of CH4 from the landfill surface was approached based on the adopted mathematical model. The Ward agglomeration method for cluster analysis and the Pearson coefficient were employed to evaluate the distance-based similarity measure and to optimize methods for estimating methane emissions from a landfill as well as to verify the input parameters for the model. In order to calculate the content of biodegradable organic parts in the waste, morphological tests of the landfilled waste were performed. Physical quantities, measurements and the actual amount of the landfilled waste as well as the volume of CH4 neutralized in a collective flare were implemented in the model, respectively. The model-based findings and experimental outcome demonstrated stable gas production in the landfill with a high CH4 content. On the other hand,... [more]

Online Prediction of Vehicular Fuel Cell Residual Lifetime Based on Adaptive Extended Kalman Filter
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adaptive extended Kalman filter, online prediction, proton exchange membrane fuel cell, residual lifetime
The limited lifetime of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) inhibits the further development of the fuel cell industry. Prediction is one of the most effective means for managing the lifetime of a fuel cell because it can assist in the implementation of mitigation actions before a vehicular fuel cell fails by estimating the residual lifetime. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a PEMFC lifetime prediction method for online applications. This paper presents the online prediction method developed for the residual lifetime of a vehicular fuel cell, which utilises data processing with an adaptive extended Kalman filter and a prediction formula. The formula considers different operating conditions and the external environment, which is in accord with the actual operating conditions of fuel cell vehicles. This method realises the online prediction of the residual lifetime of a vehicular fuel cell by updating weight coefficients for the operating conditions and environmental factors... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: certification, energy efficiency class, energy performance, residential buildings
The need to achieve energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission decreases within the building sector requires the implementation of a supportive legal framework. To fulfil this requirement, a building certification system must be developed that is easily understandable for end users. In Poland, assessments of the energy performance of buildings are based on primary energy indicator verification. However, this parameter is difficult to understand for building owners or for tenants. Therefore, in this study, energy efficiency class limits and a heating indicator for energy needs indicator have been estimated for multi-family buildings in Poland. To achieve this purpose, a reference building was used and 180 calculation variants were developed, which considered the following variables: 3 types of climate data, 4 values of building shape ratios, 3 types of ventilation, 3 thermal transmittance standards and 3 windows area ratios to the external wall. The results showed that the greatest... [more]

CO2 Injection and Enhanced Oil Recovery in Ohio Oil Reservoirs—An Experimental Approach to Process Understanding
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Clinton sandstone, CO2 sequestration, Copper Ridge dolomite, core flood, enhanced oil recovery, pilot injection
Process understanding of CO2 injection into a reservoir is a crucial step for planning a CO2 injection operation. CO2 injection was investigated for Ohio oil reservoirs which have access to abundant CO2 from local coal-fired power plants and industrial facilities. In a first of its kind study in Ohio, lab-scale core characterization and flooding experiments were conducted on two of Ohio’s most prolific oil and gas reservoirs—the Copper Ridge dolomite and Clinton sandstone. Reservoir properties such as porosity, permeability, capillary pressure, and oil−water relative permeability were measured prior to injecting CO2 under and above the minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) of the reservoir. These evaluations generated reservoir rock-fluid data that are essential for building reservoir models in addition to providing insights on injection below and above the MMP. Results suggested that the two Ohio reservoirs responded positively to CO2 injection and recovered additional oil. Copper Ridge... [more]

Multicriterial Evaluation of Renewable Energy Expansion Projects at Municipal Level for the Available Biomass Potential
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: AHP, multicriteria decision analysis, potential model, renewable energy system, utility value analysis
To reduce emissions in the energy sector and reach worldwide climate goals, further expansion of renewable energy sources (RES) is inevitable. Local opposition has increased in recent years, resulting in the need for more consideration of acceptance issues in the planning process of RES projects. To fill this gap, a method is introduced to consider the dimension of social acceptance in a holistic approach and at an early project stage. In a two-step procedure, a municipal interest profile is created, followed by an examination of possible expansion projects based on the municipal profile. Both hard and soft characteristics of a given project are assessed in combination. Using the example of two potential scenarios for biomass expansion in a given municipality in Germany, the methodology is put to the test. The results show that with the new method House of municipal Energy (HomE), the interest profile of a municipality can be quantified in a comprehensible and transparent way. It is fu... [more]

Conventional or Microwave Sintering: A Comprehensive Investigation to Achieve Efficient Clean Energy Harvesting
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: commercialization, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), Energy Conversion, microwave sintering, photoanode
Layers of titania are the critical components in sensitized photovoltaics. The transfer of electrons occurs from the dye molecule to the external circuit through a transparent conducting oxide, namely fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO). Porosity, interparticle connectivity, and the titania films’ defects play a vital role in assessing the dye-sensitized solar cells’ (DSSCs) performance. The conventional methods typically take several hours to fabricate these layers. This is a significant impediment for the large-scale manufacture of DSSCs. This step can be reduced to a few hours by a microwave sintering process and may facilitate the rapid fabrication of the critical layers for sensitized photovoltaics, thus, boosting the prospects for the commercialization of these devices. In the present study, we aimed to perform different heat treatments (conventional and microwave) on the titania films with different temperatures to understand the phase formation, transmittance, and porosity without l... Keywords: ammonium bisulfates, commercial catalyst, deactivation, DeNOx, power plants, SCR-NH3, vanadium-based catalyst
Nitrogen dioxide is one of the most dangerous air pollutants, because its high concentration in air can be directly harmful to human health. It is also responsible for photochemical smog and acid rains. One of the most commonly used techniques to tackle this problem in large combustion plants is selective catalytic reduction (SCR). Commercial SCR installations are often equipped with a V2O5−WO3/TiO2 catalyst. In power plants which utilize a solid fuel boiler, catalysts are exposed to unfavorable conditions. In the paper, factors responsible for deactivation of such a catalyst are comprehensively reviewed where different types of deactivation mechanism, like mechanical, chemical or thermal mechanisms, are separately described. The paper presents the impact of sulfur trioxide and ammonia slip on the catalyst deactivation as well as the problem of ammonium bisulfate formation. The latter is one of the crucial factors influencing the loss of catalytic activity. The majority of issues with... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: boiling, calibration, condensation, convection, gradient heat flux sensor, heat flux, heat transfer
The paper describes a unique method of heat flux measurement, i.e., gradient heatmetry. Gradient heatmetry is performed using gradient heat flux sensors (GHFS) developed on the anisotropic thermoelements basis. The principle of GHFS’ operation leads to the fact that their response time is about 10 ns, and the volt-watt sensitivity does not depend on the thickness. GHFS are compared with other types heat flux sensors, with the GHFS features depending on the materials being described. The theory and examples of gradient heatmetry applications in thermophysical experiment are provided.

A Novel Equivalent Continuum Approach for Modelling Hydraulic Fractures
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ABAQUS, FEM, hydraulic fracturing, permeability, void ratio
Hydraulic fracturing has transitioned into widespread use over the last few decades. There are a variety of numerical methods available to simulate hydraulic fracturing. However, most current methods require a large number of input parameters, of which the values of some parameters are poorly constrained. This paper proposes a new method of modelling the hydraulically fractured region using void-ratio dependent relation to define the permeability of the fractured region. This approach is computationally efficient and reduces the number of input parameters. By implementing this method with an equivalent continuum representation, uncertainties are reduced arising from heterogeneity and anisotropy of earth materials. The computational efficiency improves modelling performance in stress sensitive zones such as in the vicinity of the injection well or near faults.

Reversible Heat Pump Coupled with Ground Ice Storage for Annual Air Conditioning: An Energy Analysis
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ground source heat pump, heat pump, ice tank, ice thermal energy storage
During annual operation, a heat pump produces both heating and cooling effects, so it would be of great advantage to store one of the two to be then used when it is necessary. To do this, a seasonal energy storage is necessary. This paper presents results relative to the use of a ground ice thermal energy storage (I-TES) integrated with a reversible heat pump for annual air conditioning. The energy analysis is based on heating and cooling loads for a residential building located in Milan. In particular, the focus is on the most important parameters affecting the performance of both the whole system and the Ice Tank, which is the position and the thickness of the insulation layers and the shape of the ice tank. A biannual simulation of the system allows for a full description of the ice tank behavior during the charging and discharging processes. The main objective of the study is to suggest a first tentative procedure to design the I-TES integrated system with the best energy performan... [more]

Evaluation of DFIGs’ Primary Frequency Regulation Capability for Power Systems with High Penetration of Wind Power
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: doubly-fed induction generator, equivalent droop coefficient, power systems, primary frequency regulation
Accompanying the continuous increase in wind power penetration, the power system inertia is reduced, and the system frequency regulation performance deteriorates. Wind turbine generators are required to participate in primary frequency regulation (PFR) to support system frequency. Here, the PFR capability of the widely-used doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) is evaluated to estimate the participation of the DFIG in system frequency control. The frequency regulation model of the DFIG is established and briefly discussed. The equivalent PFR droop coefficient is then deduced from the model using a small signal increment method to evaluate the DFIG’s PFR capability. Key factors affecting the equivalent droop coefficient are studied, and the droop control is optimized to keep the equivalent droop coefficient in the desired range. The proposed method is verified utilizing a provincial power grid model of China.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: analytical method, direct drive linear generator, finite element analysis, permanent magnet linear machine, wave energy converter
Linear generator utilization in a wave energy converter (WEC) is an attractive alternative to a rotary generator. This paper presents the design of a permanent magnet linear machine (PMLM) for WEC applications in low wave power areas. In this paper, the wave height and vertical speed of Malaysian water is used for the simulation and design. Two design variants are introduced which are tubular PMLM with no spacer (TPMLM-NS) and tubular PMLM with spacer (TPMLM-S). Finite element analysis (FEA) has been conducted to investigate the performance and to refine the main dimensions of the design in terms of split ratio, pitch ratio and tooth width. The FEA results are then validated using an analytical method which is established according to the design’s magnetic field distribution. Wave Energy Extraction by Flexible Floaters
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: floating elastic plate, fluid–structure interaction, Wave Energy
We present a novel mathematical model to investigate the extraction of wave power by flexible floaters. The model is based on the method of dry modes, coupled with a matched eigenfunction expansion. Our model results compare satisfactorily with preliminary data obtained from a demonstrator device, developed at the University of Groningen. We show that the role of elasticity is to increase the number of resonant frequencies with respect to a rigid body, which has a positive effect on wave power output. The mathematical model is then extended to irregular incident waves, described by a JONSWAP spectrum. Our results show that the peak capture factors decrease in irregular waves, as compared to the monochromatic case. However, the system becomes more efficient at non-resonant frequencies. This work highlights the need to scale-up experimental investigations on flexible wave energy converters, which are still a small minority, compared to those on rigid converters.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ECT, insulation liquid mixtures, mineral oil, natural ester, power transformers, retrofilling, rotating disc system, streaming electrification, synthetic ester
Power transformers are the main element of an electric power system. The service life of these devices depends to a large extent on the technical condition of their insulation system. Replacing mineral oils with natural or synthetic ester (retrofilling process) may increase the efficiency and operational safety of transformers, and also limit their adverse environmental impact. It is technically unfeasible to completely remove mineral oil from a transformer. Its small residues form a mixture with fluid ester, with different physicochemical and electric properties. Streaming electrification is one of the phenomena which, under unfavorable conditions, may damage the insulation system of a forced oil cooled transformer. It is necessary to run prophylactic tests for the ECT (electrostatic charging tendency) of insulating liquid mixtures from the point of view of transformer retrofilling, which is being used more often than before.
