Lucio Ciabattoni, Stefano Cardarelli, Marialaura Di Somma, Giorgio Graditi, Gabriele Comodi
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aggregators, demand side management, electric vehicle simulator, flexibility, grid-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-grid
Recently, due to the growth of the electric vehicle (EV) market, the investigation of grid-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-grid strategies has become a priority in both the electric mobility and distribution grid research areas. However, there is still a lack of large-scale data sets to test and deploy energy management strategies. In this paper, a fully customizable EV population simulator is presented as an attempt to fill this gap. The proposed tool is designed as a web simulator as well as a Matlab/Simulink block, in order to facilitate its integration in different projects and applications. It provides individual and aggregated charge, discharge and plugin/out event data for a population of EVs, considering both home and public charging stations. The population is generated on the basis of statistical data (which can be fully customized) including commuting distances, vehicle models, traffic and social behavior of the owners. A peak-shaving case study is finally proposed to show the pot... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery cell, battery electric vehicle, electric vehicle, Energy Storage, lithium-ion
This paper examines the specifications of lithium battery cells, which are considered one of the most vital sources for electrical energy storage units. The specifications have been covered to associate battery performance with its usage for electrically powered motor vehicles. With the motivation of rapid deployment of electric vehicles (EVs) around the world, the key contribution of this study is to provide a comparative investigation of well-known commercially available Li-ion battery cells used as a pack for electric race car. Five lithium cells from different manufacturers were analyzed for start voltage, end voltage, current, and the use of active cooling under different test conditions. Thermal imaging was used to provide more comprehensive analysis of tested battery packs. The outcomes of this experimental investigation are described in the sections below in the order in which the analyses were conducted. The key findings of this study are presented in the conclusion section.

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC line-to-line fault, DC transmission, FRT, HVDC, MMC, reverse-blocking IGBT, sub-module, topology
When integrating multi-grid renewable energy systems, modular multi-level converters (MMCs) are promising for high-voltage DC (HVDC) transmission. Because of the characteristics of the system, however, it is more difficult to prevent a fault at the DC terminal than at the AC terminal of the MMC. Accordingly, a fault ride-through (FRT) strategy for the operation of the MMC in the DC terminal is required for stable system operation. In this paper, a solution for closed-circuit overcurrent caused by a permanent line-to-line DC fault is proposed. This method is able to reduce the fault current through the adjustment of the slope of the total voltage in the system by operating a sub-module having lower switching losses and fewer passive devices compared with existing topologies. Additionally, through the equivalent circuit of the proposed scheme in a sub-module in case of a fault, the FRT mechanism for the fault current is explained. The feasibility of this proposed technique was verified t... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combustion air humidification, Energy Efficiency, flue gas condensation, heat pumps, kraft recovery boiler, scrubbers
Sustainability and energy efficiency have become important factors for many industrial processes, including chemical pulping. Recently complex back-end heat recovery solutions have been applied to biomass-fired boilers, lowering stack temperatures and recovering some of the latent heat of the moisture by condensation. Modern kraft recovery boiler flue gas offers still unutilized heat recovery possibilities. Scrubbers have been used, but the focus has been on gas cleaning; heat recovery implementations remain simple. The goal of this study is to evaluate the potential to increase the power generation and efficiency of chemical pulping by improved back-end heat recovery from the recovery boiler. Different configurations of heat recovery schemes and different heat sink options are considered, including heat pumps. IPSEpro simulation software is used to model the boiler and steam cycle of a modern Nordic pulp mill. When heat pumps are used to upgrade some of the recovered low-grade heat, u... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aseismic gap, basaltic magma conduit, brittle–plastic transition, deep low-frequency earthquake, geothermal exploration, high-frequency earthquake, lithosphere, seismicity, thermal monitoring
Deep low-frequency earthquakes (LFEs) are known to occur in dehydration phenomena from the subducting hydrous slab and in magmatic phenomena beneath Quaternary volcanoes in Japan. To realize the spatial and temporal characteristics of the magmatic deep low-frequency earthquakes, their hypocenters along with those of ordinary overhead high-frequency earthquakes are analyzed beneath six volcanic fields in northeastern Japan. This trial clarifies the rising basaltic magma conduits and rheological profiles of the lithosphere. Deep low-frequency earthquakes tend to form three vertical clusters corresponding to the rheological strength peak of the peridotite upper mantle, gabbroic lower crust, and granitic upper crust. Interactive aseismic gaps between low- and high-frequency earthquakes reveal the brittle−plastic transition as an isothermal indicator in the lithosphere. This relationship provides a tool to monitor the thermal evolution of the lithosphere and to explore sustainable geotherma... [more]

Keywords: balance of plant, DEMO, loss of flow accident, once through steam generators, primary heat transfer system, RELAP5
The Breeding Blanket (BB) is one of the key components of the European Demonstration (EU-DEMO) fusion reactor. Its main subsystems, the Breeder Zone (BZ) and the First Wall (FW), are cooled by two independent cooling circuits, called Primary Heat Transfer Systems (PHTS). Evaluating the BB PHTS performances in anticipated transient and accident conditions is a relevant issue for the design of these cooling systems. Within the framework of the EUROfusion Work Package Breeding Blanket, it was performed a thermal-hydraulic analysis of the PHTS during transient conditions belonging to the category of “Decrease in Coolant System Flow Rate”, by using Reactor Excursion Leak Analysis Program (RELAP5) Mod3.3. The BB, the PHTS circuits, the BZ Once Through Steam Generators and the FW Heat Exchangers were included in the study. Selected transients consist in partial and complete Loss of Flow Accident (LOFA) involving either the BZ or the FW PHTS Main Coolant Pumps (MCPs). The influence of the loss... [more]

Keywords: alkaline electrolyser, hybrid microgrid, hydrogen storage system, low-carbon future energy systems, PEM fuel cell, variable renewable energy sources
This paper proposes a Hybrid Microgrid (HμG) model including distributed generation (DG) and a hydrogen-based storage system, controlled through a tailored control strategy. The HμG is composed of three DG units, two of them supplied by solar and wind sources, and the latter one based on the exploitation of theProton Exchange Membrane (PEM) technology. Furthermore, the system includes an alkaline electrolyser, which is used as a responsive load to balance the excess of Variable Renewable Energy Sources (VRES) production, and to produce the hydrogen that will be stored into the hydrogen tank and that will be used to supply the fuel cell in case of lack of generation. The main objectives of this work are to present a validated dynamic model for every component of the HμG and to provide a strategy to reduce as much as possible the power absorption from the grid by exploiting the VRES production. The alkaline electrolyser and PEM fuel cell models are validated through real measurements. Th... [more]
Conventional and Alternative Sources of Thermal Energy in the Production of Cement—An Impact on CO2 Emission
Karolina Wojtacha-Rychter, Piotr Kucharski, Adam Smolinski
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Alternative Fuels, carbon dioxide reduction, cement industry, financial benefits
The article evaluates the reduction of carbon dioxide emission due to the partial substitution of coal with alternative fuels in clinker manufacture. For this purpose, the calculations were performed for seventy waste-derived samples of alternative fuels with variable calorific value and variable share in the fuel mixture. Based on annual clinker production data of the Polish Cement Association and the laboratory analysis of fuels, it was estimated that the direct net CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion alone were 543 Mg of CO2 per hour. By contrast with the full substitution of coal with alternative fuels (including 30% of biomass), the emission ranged from 302 up to 438 Mg of CO2 per hour, depending on fuel properties. A reduction of 70% in the share of fossil fuels resulted in about a 23% decrease in net emissions. It was proved that the increased use of alternative fuels as an additive to the fuel mix is also of economic importance. It was determined that thanks to the combus... [more]

Keywords: aftertreatment system, diesel engine, Ethanol, exhaust emissions, Fischer–Tropsch diesel, particulate matter
The worldwide consumption of fossil hydrocarbons in the road transport sector in 2020 corresponded to roughly half of the overall consumption. However, biofuels have been discreetly contributing to mitigate gaseous emissions and participating in sustainable development, and thus leading to the extending of the commercial utilization of internal combustion engines. In this scenario, the present work aims at exploring the effects of alternative fuels containing a blend of 15% ethanol and 35% biodiesel with a 50% fossil diesel (E15D50B35) or 50% Fischer−Tropsch (F-T) diesel (E15FTD50B35) on the engine combustion, exhaust emissions (CO, HC, and NOx), particulate emissions characteristics as well as the performance of an aftertreatment system of a common rail diesel engine. It was found that one of the blends (E15FTD50B35) showed more than 30% reduction in PM concentration number, more than 25% reduction in mean particle size, and more than 85% reduction in total PM mass with respect to con... April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coal mines, mining transport, multi-body system, numerical calculation, stand test, suspended monorail
The method of increasing the efficiency of using one of the most common means of auxiliary transport in underground coal mines—suspended monorails—is presented. Increase of velocity is one of the key parameters to improve the efficiency and economical effect related with the underground auxiliary transport. On the other hand, increasing the velocity results in bigger value of force acting on the suspended monorail route and its suspensions. The most important issue during increasing the velocity is ensuring the required safety for the passengers and not overloading the infrastructure. In order to analyze how increasing velocity influences the level of loads of the route suspension and the steel arch loads, the computational model of suspended monorail was developed. The computational model included both the physical part (embedded in the program environment based on the Multi-Body System method) and the components of the monorail control system. Two independent software environments we... [more]
Chopper-Based Control Circuit for BESS Integration in Solar PV Grids
B. V. Rajanna, Malligunta Kiran Kumar
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: BESS integration, boost converter, lead-acid battery, lithium-ion battery, solar PV grid system
The power delivered by photovoltaic (PV) arrays is dependent on environmental factors, and hence the availability and quality of power delivered by the PV array is low. These issues can be mitigated by integrating a battery energy storage system (BESS) with PV arrays. The integration of the BESS with PV arrays requires controller circuits to regulate power flow between the BESS, PV array, and the load. In this paper, a boost converter-based controller is proposed. The proposed controller has higher reliability and efficiency, and lower operational complexity. It improves the power quality and availability by adjusting the power flow to/from the BESS while delivering the required load power. A simulation study was performed to validate the proposed controller under varying irradiance and temperature of the PV array. The controller was validated against both lithium-ion and lead-acid BESSs.

Keywords: cross-subsidy, distributed generation, economic viability, micro-installations, regulation, solar PV energy
Brazil is currently undergoing changes to regulations on distributed generation (DG), specifically for solar energy micro-generation. The changes proposed by the Brazilian Regulatory Agency suggest that only the cost of energy be compensated to investors. The service costs and other charges related to energy tariffs must be divided among consumers. Investors with existing installations and class entities have contested these proposals, calling them “sun-fees”. To date, no scientific papers have been published discussing these changes. The new regulations propose an end to cross subsidies, where all consumers (even those who do not have DG) pay for the transmission and distribution systems. This study compares the economic feasibility of micro-generation before and after implementing the new standards proposed by the regulatory agency. We used data on average electrical energy demand, energy price, and solar radiation in different regions. The national averages were used as a base compa... [more]

Keywords: Energy Efficiency, gamification, ICT platform
Energy efficiency in buildings can be enhanced by several actions: encouraging users to comprehend and then adopt more energy-efficient behaviors; aiding building managers in maximizing energy savings; and using automation to optimize energy consumption, generation, and storage of controllable and flexible devices without compromising comfort levels and indoor air-quality parameters. This paper proposes an integrated Information and communications technology (ICT) based platform addressing all these factors. The gamification platform is embedded in the ICT platform along with an interactive energy management system, which aids interested stakeholders in optimizing “when and at which rate” energy should be buffered and consumed, with several advantages, such as reducing peak load, maximizing local renewable energy consumption, and delivering more efficient use of the resources available in individual buildings or blocks of buildings. This system also interacts with an automation manager... [more]

Keywords: Borehole Thermal Energy Storage (BTES), data management, data reconstruction, Data Validation and Reconciliation (DVR), educational and academic complex, Ground-Source Heat Pump (GSHP), Optimization, regression models, system performance
Aalto New Campus Complex (ANCC) is a recently inaugurated educational facility at Aalto University, located in Otaniemi (Espoo), Finland. Within over 40,000 m2, it comprises two faculties, a shopping center, recreational areas, and a metro station. ANCC is also a large-scale application of Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP)−Borehole Thermal Energy Storage (BTES) in Finland, comprising an irregular BTES field of 74 boreholes with an overall length of roughly 23 km and 4 million m3 of energy storage. Therefore, accurate monitoring of the GSHP−BTES energy system is crucial for sustainable and efficient long-term operation. Due to the fundamental issues affecting the accuracy of all thermal energy meters, a novel methodology adjusting for consistency of the measured data (in order to accomplish daily energy balance on both sides of the GSHP) is developed. The proposed methodology is used also in conjunction with reconstruction of missing relevant data before April/May 2020 by applying linear r... [more]

Keywords: hydrodynamic, linear decomposition method, NWT, oscillating water column, potential flow, turbine–chamber interaction, wave energy converter
A numerical study was performed to investigate the applicability of the linear decomposition method for the hydrodynamic energy conversion of an oscillating-water-column type wave energy converter (OWC-WEC). Hydrodynamic problems of the OWC chamber were decomposed into the excitation and radiation problems with the time-domain numerical method based on the linear potential theory. A finite element method was applied to solve the potential flow in the entire fluid domain including OWC chamber structure. The validity of the linear decomposition method was examined by comparing with the direct interaction method for the turbine−chamber interaction based on the linear pressure drop characteristics. In order to estimate the hydrodynamic energy conversion performance under the irregular waves, the response spectrum method was applied with the transfer function based on the linear decomposition method. Under the various irregular wave conditions, the pneumatic power of OWC-WEC calculated by t... [more]

Keywords: ambient temperature, coefficient, energy balance, generation, heat transfer, irradiation, outdoor, photovoltaic module, temperature difference
Various equations are being developed and applied to predict photovoltaic (PV) module generation. Currently, quite diverse methods for predicting module generation are available, with most equations showing accuracy with ≤5% error. However, the accuracy can be determined only when the module temperature and the value of irradiation that reaches the module surface are precisely known. The prediction accuracy of outdoor generation is actually extremely low, as the method for predicting outdoor module temperature has extremely low accuracy. The change in module temperature cannot be predicted accurately because of the real-time change of irradiation and air temperature outdoors. Calculations using conventional equations from other studies show a mean error of temperature difference of 4.23 °C. In this study, an equation was developed and verified that can predict the precise module temperature up to 1.64 °C, based on the experimental data obtained after installing an actual outdoor module... April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon nanotubes, formic acid, Hydrogen, nitrogen, palladium
Bamboo-like nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) were used to synthesize supported palladium catalysts (0.2−2 wt.%) for hydrogen production via gas phase formic acid decomposition. The beneficial role of nitrogen centers of N-CNTs in the formation of active isolated palladium ions and dispersed palladium nanoparticles was demonstrated. It was shown that although the surface layers of N-CNTs are enriched with graphitic nitrogen, palladium first interacts with accessible pyridinic centers of N-CNTs to form stable isolated palladium ions. The activity of Pd/N-CNTs catalysts is determined by the ionic capacity of N-CNTs and dispersion of metallic nanoparticles stabilized on the nitrogen centers. The maximum activity was observed for the 0.2% Pd/N-CNTs catalyst consisting of isolated palladium ions. A ten-fold increase in the concentration of supported palladium increased the contribution of metallic nanoparticles with a mean size of 1.3 nm and decreased the reaction rate by only a fact... Keywords: future sign, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, structural topic modeling, weak signal
It is important to examine in detail how the distribution of academic research topics related to renewable energy is structured and which topics are likely to receive new attention in the future in order for scientists to contribute to the development of renewable energy. This study uses an advanced probabilistic topic modeling to statistically examine the temporal changes of renewable energy topics by using academic abstracts from 2010−2019 and explores the properties of the topics from the perspective of future signs such as weak signals. As a result, in strong signals, methods for optimally integrating renewable energy into the power grid are paid great attention. In weak signals, interest in large-capacity energy storage systems such as hydrogen, supercapacitors, and compressed air energy storage showed a high rate of increase. In not-strong-but-well-known signals, comprehensive topics have been included, such as renewable energy potential, barriers, and policies. The approach of t... [more]

Keywords: Biomass, solar pyrolysis–gasification, solar reactor, spouted bed, Syngas, Synthetic Fuels, waste conversion
This paper addresses the solar thermochemical conversion of biomass or waste feedstocks based on pyro-gasification for the clean production of high-value and energy-intensive fuels. The utilization of solar energy for supplying the required process heat is attractive to lower the dependence of gasification processes on conventional energy resources and to reduce emissions of CO2 and other pollutants for the production of high-value chemical synthetic fuels (syngas). Using concentrated solar energy to drive the endothermal reactions further allows producing more syngas with a higher gas quality, since it has not been contaminated by combustion products, while saving biomass resources. The solar-driven process is thus a sustainable and promising alternative route, enabling syngas yield enhancement and CO2 mitigation, thereby potentially outperforming the performance of conventional processes for syngas production. This review presents relevant research studies in the field and provides t... [more]

Keywords: electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, overpotential, polarization curve, protonic resistance, resistance separation
The separation of resistances during their measurement is important because it helps to identify contributors in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell performance. The major methodologies for separating the resistances are electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization curves. In addition, an equivalent circuit was selected for EIS analysis. Although the equivalent circuit of PEM fuel cells has been extensively studied, less attention has been paid to the separation of resistances, including protonic resistance in the cathode catalyst layer (CCL). In this study, polarization curve and EIS analyses were conducted to separate resistances considering the charge transfer resistance, mass transport resistance, high frequency resistance, and protonic resistance in the CCL. A general solution was mathematically derived using the recursion formula. Consequently, resistances were separated and analyzed with respect to variations in relative humidity in the entire current d... [more]

Keywords: frequency collapse, frequency stability, inertia, load shedding, PMU, power grid, synchronous condensers
Under-frequency load shedding (UFLS) is a classic and a commonly accepted measure used to mitigate the frequency disturbances in case of loss-of-generation incidents in AC power grids. Triggering of UFLS is classically done at frequency thresholds when system frequency collapse is already close to happening. The renewed interest for synchronous condensers due to the global trends on massive commissioning of non-synchronous renewable power generation leading to reduction of system inertia gives an opportunity to rethink the approach used to trigger load-shedding activation. This question is especially relevant for the Baltic states facing a desynchronization from Russian power grid and a necessity to operate in an isolated island mode. The main goal of this paper is to introduce a predictive load shedding (LS) method without usage of either frequency or ROCOF measurements based on the monitoring of active power injections of synchronous condensers and to prove the efficiency of the conc...
