A Back-of-Queue Model of a Signal-Controlled Intersection Approach Developed Based on Analysis of Vehicle Driver Behavior
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: back-of-queue model, drivers behaviours, road transport, signal-controlled intersections, traffic engineering, traffic monitoring, video analysis
In smart cities, it is expected that transport, communication as well as the movement of people and goods will take place in the shortest possible time while maintaining a high level of safety. In recent years, due to the significant increase in the number of passengers and vehicles on the road and the capacity limitations of transport networks, it has become necessary to use new technologies for intelligent control and traffic management. Intelligent transport systems use advanced technologies in the field of data gathering, information processing, and traffic control to meet current transport needs. To be able to effectively control and manage road traffic, it is necessary to have reliable mathematical models that allow for a faithful representation of the real traffic conditions. Models of this type are usually the basis of complex algorithms used in practice in road traffic control. The application of appropriate models reflecting the behavior of road users contributes to the reduc... [more]

Molten Salts for Sensible Thermal Energy Storage: A Review and an Energy Performance Analysis
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: concentrated solar power, molten salts, nanofluids, sensible heat storage, thermal energy storage
A comprehensive review of different thermal energy storage materials for concentrated solar power has been conducted. Fifteen candidates were selected due to their nature, thermophysical properties, and economic impact. Three key energy performance indicators were defined in order to evaluate the performance of the different molten salts, using Solar Salt as a reference for low and high temperatures. The analysis provided evidence that nitrate-based materials are the best choice for the former and chloride-based materials are best for the latter instead of fluoride and carbonate-based candidates, mainly due to their low cost.

Assessment of Cow Dung Pellets as a Renewable Solid Fuel in Direct Combustion Technologies
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ash, biofuel, combustion, cow dung, pelletization, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Recently, biomass application as a renewable energy source is increasing worldwide. However, its availability differs in dependence on the location and climate, therefore, agricultural residues as cow dung (CD) are being considered to supply heat and/or power installation. This paper aims at a wide evaluation of CD fuel properties and its prospect to apply in the form of pellets to direct combustion installations. Therefore, the proximate, ultimate composition and calorific value were analyzed, then pelletization and combustion tests were performed, and the ash characteristics were tested. It was found that CD is a promising source of bioenergy in terms of LHV (16.34 MJ·kg−1), carbon (44.24%), and fixed carbon (18.33%) content. During pelletization, CD showed high compaction properties and at a moisture content of 18%,and the received pellets’ bulk density reached ca. 470 kg·m−3 with kinetic durability of 98.7%. While combustion, in a fixed grate 25 kW boiler, high emissions of CO, SO2... [more]

Microseismic Temporal-Spatial Precursory Characteristics and Early Warning Method of Rockburst in Steeply Inclined and Extremely Thick Coal Seam
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: microseismic precursor information, passive velocity tomography, risk area, rockburst, steeply inclined coal seam, temporal-spatial early warning method
Early warning of a potential rockburst risk and its area of occurrence helps to take effective and targeted measures to mitigate rockburst hazards. This study investigates the microseismic (MS) spatial-temporal precursory characteristic parameters in a typical steeply inclined and extremely thick coal seam (SIETCS) with high rockburst risk and proposes three spatial/temporal quantification parameters and a spatial-temporal early warning method. Analysis results of temporal parameters show that the sharp-rise-sharp-drop variation in total daily energy and event count can be regarded as a precursor for high energy tremor. The appearance of peak values of both energy deviation (≥20) and event count deviation (≥1) can be regarded as precursors that indicate imminent rockburst danger. A laboratory acoustic emission (AE) experiment reveals that precursor characteristics obtained from the study can be feasibly used to warn the rockburst risk. The spatial evolution laws of spatial parameters s... [more]

Design and Assessment of District Heating Systems with Solar Thermal Prosumers and Thermal Storage
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: distributed solar prosumers, district heating network, simulation modeling, solar thermal collectors, thermal storage
In this study, a holistic energy, economic and environmental assessment was performed on a prosumer-based district heating system, including scenarios with varying district size, retrofitting stages and system configurations. A modeling framework was built which comprises a thermal network design and simulation model; a building energy demand model for districts; and supply and storage technology models that allow assessing system solar fraction, equivalent annual cost and greenhouse gas emissions of district heating systems (DHS). Furthermore, the approach allows comparing the performance of a DHS with individual heating systems (IHS) for the district with the same set of technology options (rooftop-mounted solar thermal collectors, gas boilers and thermal storage tanks). The framework was applied to a Swiss case study. The results of the case study show that DHS often outperform IHS; however, parameters such as the district size, the retrofitting stage of buildings and the system con... [more]

Energy Efficiency in OECD Countries: A DEA Approach
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DEA analysis, electricity, Energy Efficiency, primary energy
This paper deals with energy efficiency examined through an integrated model that links energy with environment, technology, and urbanisation as related areas. Our main goal is to discover how efficiently developed countries use primary energy and electricity (secondary energy). We additionally want to find out how the inclusion of environmental care and renewable energy capacity affects efficiency. For that purpose, we set up an output-oriented BCC data envelopment analysis that employs a set of input variables with non-negative values to calculate the efficiency scores on minimising energy use and losses as well as environmental emissions for a sample of 30 OECD member states during the period from 2001 to 2018. We develop a couple of baseline models in which we find that countries have mean inefficiency margins of 16.1% for primary energy and from 10.8 to 13.5% for electricity. The results from the extended models show that taking care about environment does not affect efficiency in... [more]

Test of a New Low-Speed Compressed Air Engine for Energy Recovery
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: compressed air engine, energy recovery, pneumatic motor
The paper presents a new design solution for the multi-cylinder compressed air engine, described in the PL 216801 patent. A characteristic feature of the engine is its double-piston operation with pistons working in pairs in opposition and a reciprocating movement in toroidal cylinders. The energy of compressed air was used more effectively in the described engine than in the solutions known so far. Comparing the engine built in accordance with the PL 216801 patent with the parameters of the MP165 and MP3000 engines, lower air consumption in relation to the power generated on the shaft is demonstrated. The described engine uses only one crankshaft and one straight complex shaft, which constitutes an innovative combination of pistons, while maintaining the same engine operation as in the case of two crankshafts operating with phase shift and working chamber shift. Such a solution results in a reduction in the harmful space occurring at the beginning of the power stroke to the value clos... [more]

Long-Term Assessment of Onshore and Offshore Wind Energy Potentials of Qatar
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ENSO, ERA5 reanalysis winds, Qatar coast, shamal winds, wind energy
Exploitation of conventional energy resources has caused a deliberate increase in the emitted carbon in the atmosphere, which catalyzes global warming trends. This is a matter of concern, especially in Qatar, where fossil fuels (oil and gas) are largely relied upon for power production. The dependency on such resources could be gradually reduced by utilizing clean and renewable energy. Resource characterization is an important step to evaluate the potentiality of available renewable energy sources. Wind energy is one among them, which has not been assessed reliably so far in Qatar. We analyzed the wind energy potential along the onshore and offshore areas of Qatar using 40 years (1979−2018) of hourly wind data extracted from the ECMWF Reanalysis v5 (ERA5) database. Monthly, seasonal, annual, and decadal mean wind power densities have been derived. Reliability tests have been carried out at select onshore and offshore locations. Trends and inter-annual variability have been assessed. Th... [more]

Effect of Upstream Side Flow of Wind Turbine on Aerodynamic Noise: Simulation Using Open-Loop Vibration in the Rod in Rod-Airfoil Configuration
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aeroacoustics, flow control, noise reduction, rod-airfoil method, wind turbine
Adaptive and flexible control techniques have recently been examined as methods of controlling flow and reducing the potential noise in vertical axis wind turbines. Two-Dimensional (2D) fluid flow simulation around rod-airfoil is addressed in this study as a simple component of the wind turbine by using Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier−Stokes (URANS) equations for prediction of noise using Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) analogy. To control the flow and reduce noise, the active controlling vibration rod method is utilized with a maximum displacement ranging from 0.01 C to 1 C (C: airfoil chord). Acoustic assessment indicates that the leading edge of the blade produces noise, that by applying vibration in cylinder, blade noise in 0.1 C and 1 C decreases by 22 dB and 35 dB, respectively. Applying vibration is aerodynamically helpful since it reduces the fluctuations in the airfoil lift force by approximately 48% and those in the rod by about 46%. Strouhal assessment (frequency) shows th... [more]

Assessing the Energy-Saving Potential of a Dish-Stirling Con-Centrator Integrated Into Energy Plants in the Tertiary Sector
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air conditioning, cogeneration, dish-Stirling concentrator, energy saving, heat pump, thermal solar energy
Energy consumed for air conditioning in residential and tertiary sectors accounts for a large share of global use. To reduce the environmental impacts burdening the covering of such demands, the adoption of renewable energy technologies is increasing. In this regard, this paper evaluates the energy and environmental benefits achievable by integrating a dish-Stirling concentrator into energy systems used for meeting the air conditioning demand of an office building. Two typical reference energy plants are assumed: (i) a natural gas boiler for heating purposes and air-cooled chillers for the cooling periods, and (ii) a reversible heat pump for both heating and cooling. For both systems, a dish-Stirling concentrator is assumed to operate first in electric-mode and then in a cogenerative-mode. Detailed models are adopted for plant components and implemented in the TRNSYS environment. Results show that when the concentrator is operating in electric-mode the electricity purchased from the gr... [more]

A Di-Carbazole-Based Dye as a Potential Sensitizer for Greenhouse-Integrated Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: di-carbazole, dye-sensitized solar cell, greenhouse, iodine-free electrolyte, spectral engineering
For the first time in dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) technology, a di-carbazole-based dye was synthesized and evaluated for its usage as a potential sensitizer for the development of wavelength selective semi-transparent DSSCs for greenhouses-oriented applications. The dye was designed to demonstrate a blue light absorption, allowing a high transmittance in the red region of the visible light, even after its adsorption on the anode semiconductor, which is the most important one for the photosynthetic action of the plants. The application of the new dye to DSSCs was examined using either a high-performance iodide-based electrolyte or a highly transparent iodine-free electrolyte to determine a good balance between electric power generation and device transparency. The spectral engineered DSSCs demonstrated quite promising characteristics, providing a high external quantum efficiency (higher than 70%) in the whole blue−green region of the visible light, while allowing high transparency... Simulation Analysis of CO2-EOR Process and Feasibility of CO2 Storage during EOR
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 utilization and storage, EOR, mobility control, numerical simulation
In this study, oil production and retention were observed and compared in 72 reservoir simulation cases, after which an economic analysis for various CO2 and oil prices was performed. Reservoir simulation cases comprise different combinations of water alternating gas (WAG) ratios, permeabilities, and well distances. These models were set at three different depths; thus different pressure and temperature conditions, to see the impact of miscibility on oil production and CO2 sequestration. Those reservoir conditions affect oil production and CO2 retention differently. The retention trend dependence on depth was not monotonic—optimal retention relative to the amount of injected CO2 could be achieved at middle depths and mediocre permeability as well. Results reflecting different reservoir conditions and injection strategies are shown, and analysis including the utilization factor and the net present value was conducted to examine the feasibility of different scenarios. The analysis presen... [more]

Fuel Cells Based on Natural Polysaccharides for Rail Vehicle Application
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: exhaust emission, Fuel Cells, hybrid vehicles, Hydrogen
This manuscript shows the use of natural polysaccharides such as starch and cellulose as a carbon source for fuel cells. To achieve this, two innovative methods of obtaining hydrogen have been shown: by adsorption and by enzyme. The carbonization path of the material results in excellent sorption properties and allows gas with high efficiency to be obtained. The enzymatic method for the degradation of the compound is more expensive because specific enzymes (such as laccase, tyrosinase) must be used, but it allows greater control of the properties of the obtained material. A scientific novelty is the use of natural raw materials, the use of which increases the biodegradability of the electrochemical system and also reduces the cost of raw materials and increases the range of their acquisition. Energy should be generated where it is used. Another goal is decentralization, and thanks to the proposed solutions, hydrogen cells represent an innovative alternative to today’s energy giants—als... Operating Hardware Impact on the Heat Transfer Properties of Windows
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Energy, operating hardware, thermal bridge, U-value, window
Despite significant advancements in fenestration technology in the last two decades, the thermal transmittance of fenestration products is still significantly higher than that of walls. This corresponds to 60% of the total energy loss of a modern building envelope through the windows. Hence, further development and improvements of fenestration products are necessary. Increasingly stringent codes and standards for fenestration stimulate industry to work on improved solutions. Thus, it is crucial that assessment techniques are able to account for innovations accurately. The thermal effects of non-continuous hardware in window frames are currently ignored by international rating procedures. A preliminary investigation conducted by our team showed significant performance degradation in two of the three out-opening casement profiles caused by the presence of operating hardware. Numerical Investigation of the Geometrical Effect on Flow-Induced Vibration Performance of Pivoted Bodies
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cross section, FIV, geometry, pivoted cylinder, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, VIV
In this study, the Flow-Induced Vibration (FIV) of pivoted cylinders (at a distance) is numerically investigated as a potential source of energy harvesting. In particular, we investigate the effect of pivot point placement, arm length, and natural frequency on the FIV performance of six different cross sections in the Reynolds number of around 1000. All sections have similar mass, area, and moment of inertia to eliminate non-geometrical effects on the performance. Classical studies show that the synchronization phenomenon (lock-in) occurs when the vortex formation frequency is close enough to the body’s natural frequency. Due to the configuration of the cylinder in this research (pivoted eccentrically), the natural frequency is also a function of the flow velocity as well as the geometrical specifications of the system. The simulation is done for the arm lengths between −3D and +3D for all cross sections. Results show that maximum output power is principally influenced more by the pivo... [more]

Numerical Investigation of the Combined Influence of Three-Plug Arrangement and Slot Positioning on Wankel Engine Performance
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion simulation, slot, surface-discharge spark plug, Wankel engine
A numerical methodology for three-dimensional fluid dynamics and chemical kinetics simulation of the combustion and gas-exchange processes in the Wankel engine was developed and validated. Two approaches of performance enhancement were studied—the addition of a slot in the rear side of the rotor recess, and installation of a third plug in the trailing side of the working chamber, in addition to the two available plugs mounted in the leading side of the baseline engine. The obtained results showed that the suggested three-plug arrangement significantly improves the engine performance. Furthermore, positioning the trailing plug further from the passage between the trailing and leading sides is of preference for higher mean in-chamber pressures. Nevertheless, for maximum performance, the distance should be brought to an optimum as during the intake stroke there is a loss of inducted charge due to backflow from the trailing plug hole. For the three-plug arrangement the presence of a slot i... [more]

Keywords: analytical pyrolysis, biorefinery, enzymatic hydrolysis, glucan-enriched solids, lignin-derived products, rock-rose
Residues of Cistus ladanifer obtained after commercial steam distillation for essential oil production were evaluated to produce cellulose enriched solids and added-value lignin-derived compounds. The delignification of extracted (CLRext) and extracted and hydrothermally pretreated biomass (CLRtreat) was studied using two organosolv processes, ethanol/water mixtures (EO), and alkali-catalyzed glycerol (AGO), and by an alkali (sodium hydroxide) process (ASP) under different reaction conditions. The phenolic composition of soluble lignin was determined by capillary zone electrophoresis and by Py-GC/MS, which was also used to establish the monomeric composition of both the delignified solids and isolated lignin. The enzymatic saccharification of the delignified solids was also evaluated. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 3D fracture networks, fractal theory, hydraulic fracturing, shale oil, topology
The formation of complex fracture networks through the fracturing technology is a crucial operation used to improve the production capacity of tight gas/oil. In this study, physical simulation experiments of hydraulic fracturing were conducted with a true triaxial test system on cubic shale oil samples from the Yanchang Formation, China. The fractures were scanned by CT both before and after the experiments and then reconstructed in 3D. The complexity of fracture networks was investigated quantitatively by the fractal theory with topology. Finally, the effect of the horizontal stress ratio, fluid viscosity, and natural fractures on the complexity of the fracture networks was discussed. The results indicate that the method based on fractal theory and topology can effectively characterize the complexity of the fracture network. The change rates of the fractal dimension (K) are 0.45−3.64%, and the fractal dimensions (DNH) of the 3D fracture network after fracturing are 1.9522−2.1837, the... [more]

Machine Learning-Based Predictive Modelling of Biodiesel Production—A Comparative Perspective
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: AdaBoost regression, biodiesel, linear regression, Machine Learning, random forest regression
Owing to the ever-growing impetus towards the development of eco-friendly and low carbon footprint energy solutions, biodiesel production and usage have been the subject of tremendous research efforts. The biodiesel production process is driven by several process parameters, which must be maintained at optimum levels to ensure high productivity. Since biodiesel productivity and quality are also dependent on the various raw materials involved in transesterification, physical experiments are necessary to make any estimation regarding them. However, a brute force approach of carrying out physical experiments until the optimal process parameters have been achieved will not succeed, due to a large number of process parameters and the underlying non-linear relation between the process parameters and responses. In this regard, a machine learning-based prediction approach is used in this paper to quantify the response features of the biodiesel production process as a function of the process pa... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: complementarity map, seasonal complementarity, solar energy, theoretical availability, wind energy
In recent years, Poland has experienced a significant increase in the installed capacity of solar and wind power plants. Renewables are gaining increasing interest not only because of Poland’s obligations to European Union policies, but also because they are becoming cheaper. Wind and solar energy are fairly-well investigated technologies in Poland and new reports are quite frequently added to the existing research works documenting their potential and the issues related to their use. In this article, we analyze the spatial and temporal behavior of solar and wind resources based on reanalysis datasets from ERA5. This reanalysis has been selected because it has appropriate spatial and temporal resolution and fits the field measurements well. The presented analysis focuses only on the availability of energy potential/resources, so characteristics intrinsic to energy conversion (like wind turbine power curve) were not considered. Prosumers’ Behavior under a Regulation That Encourages Strict Self-Sufficiency. The Case of Spanish Photovoltaic Micro-Generation
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: micro-generation, micro-grids, prosumers market participation, regulatory framework, self-consumption
The reduction of equipment costs encourages the diffusion of photovoltaic micro-generation, however, proper regulatory measures should be implemented to facilitate self-production dissemination and to promote the emergence of new electricity markets which integrate prosumers. The specific form of these markets will depend on the level of prosumers’ self-sufficiency and the type of grid to which they will be connected. Unfortunately, Spain has been an example of resistance to micro-generation deployment. However, some things have started to change recently, albeit only to a certain extent. This article explains the key elements of the latest regulation of photovoltaic micro-generation in Spain and, through a stylized model, describes the economic behavior of prosumers in such a regulatory framework. It is concluded that this regulation only encourages prosumer plants which are strictly focused on self-sufficiency because it discourages exports and limits capacities and this regulation d... A Bimodal Multichannel Battery Pack Equalizer Based on a Quasi-Resonant Two-Transistor Forward Converter
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: FSC equalization, LC series quasi-resonator, Two-transistor forward converter, ZVG equalization
In the application of a long series battery group, an inter-pack imbalance is inevitable. No intra-pack cell equalizer can prevent pack-level over-discharge. A bimodal, multichannel battery pack equalizer based on a quasi-resonant, two-transistor forward converter is proposed to solve this problem and achieve a tradeoff between balancing efficiency and speed. This equalizer has two modes: pack-to-pack-group and pack-to-any-pack (P2PG&AP) mode and direct-pack-to-pack (DP2P) mode. In P2PG&AP mode, this equalizer can realize the full-switching-cycle (FSC) equalization through three balancing channels, and transfer energy from any pack to both the whole group and any pack inside the group. In addition, it can effectively clamp the transformer-induced voltage using a secondary side two-transistor magnetic reset structure (STMR) and reduce the total turns of transformer coil from 70 to 50 turns via a secondary side boost converter (SBC). In DP2P mode, this equalizer can realize zero voltage... [more]
