Effects of Two Pilot Injection on Combustion and Emissions in a PCCI Diesel Engine
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion, emissions, experiments, multiple injection, numerical simulation, premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI), two pilot injection
The effects of two pilot injections on combustion and emissions were evaluated in a single−cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, which operated in premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) modes with multiple injections and heavy exhaust gas recirculation under the low load by experiments and simulation. It was revealed that with the delay of the start of the first pilot injection (SOI−P1) or the advance of the start of second pilot injection (SOI−P2), respectively, the pressure, heat release rate (HRR), and temperature peak were all increased. Analysis of the combustion process indicates that, during the two pilot injection periods, the ignition timing was mainly determined by the SOI−P2 while the first released heat peak was influenced by SOI−P1. With the delay of SOI−P1 or the advance of SOI−P2, nitrogen oxide (NOx) generation increased significantly while soot generation varied a little. In addition, increasing Q1 and decreasing the second pilot injection quantity (Q2) can manipul... [more]

Cost Benefit and Risk Analysis of Low iLUC Bioenergy Production in Europe Using Monte Carlo Simulation
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 2G ethanol, advanced biofuels, biochemicals, biomethane, CHP, cost-benefit analysis, low iLUC biofuels, marginal land, Monte Carlo simulation, second generation ethanol
Extensive surfaces of land are currently under-utilized, marginal and/or contaminated (MUC) in many EU and neighbouring countries. In the past few years, scientific research has demonstrated that bioenergy crops can potentially render this land profitable, generating income for the local populations and, at the same time, reaching the goals of the new Renewable Energy Directive (REDII) without interfering with food production. The main purpose of this paper is to measure net economic returns by computing benefits and costs of low indirect Land Use Change (iLUC) biofuel production on MUC land from the perspective of both the private investors and social welfare. A standard cost-benefit technique was applied to analyse and compare net returns of different advanced bioenergy value-chains in monetary terms. Productivity, economic feasibility and green-house gas (GHG) emissions impact were assessed and considered for the economic analysis. The considered pathways were cellulosic or second g... [more]

Entropy Rates and Efficiency of Convecting-Radiating Fins
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: convection, efficiency, entropy rate, longitudinal fin, nonlinear ODEs, radiation
We present a novel indicator for the effectiveness of longitudinal, convecting-radiating fins to dissipate heat. Starting from an analysis of the properties of the entropy rate of the steady state, we show how it is possible to assess the efficiency of such devices by looking at the amount of entropy produced in the heat transfer process. Our study concerns both purely convective fins and convection-radiant fins and takes advantage of explicit expressions for the distribution of heat along the fin. It is shown that, in a suitable limit, the standard definition of efficiency and the entropic definition coincide. The role of the fluid temperature is explicit in the new definition and in the purely convective case. An application to an aluminium fin is given. Analytical and numerical results are discussed.

Analysis of the Impact of the Assumed Moment of Meeting Total Energy Demand on the Profitability of Photovoltaic Installations for Households in Poland
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: installation capacity, investment profitability analysis, net present value (NPV), photovoltaic (pv) installation, program My Electricity, renewable sources of energy
In this article, the authors analyzed two extreme investment variants considering the installed capacity of Poland’s residential pv installation: (a) pv installation meets electricity demand only in the first year of operation, and in each subsequent year it is necessary to purchase electricity at market prices; (b) installation meets electricity demand even in the last year of operation, and in each previous year, the excess of generated electricity needs to be transferred back to the grid, with the limited (by law) right of drawing it from the grid for free in the future. In the article, a sensitivity analysis was performed, and profitability changes were established based on the NPV value, depending on case (a) or (b). The performed analyses showed that the pv installation profitability should not be analyzed, assuming only one moment when it meets 100% of the household’s electricity demand. It was shown that the choice of such a moment, depending on the value of particular technica... [more]

Numerical Investigation of an RCCI Engine Fueled with Natural Gas/Dimethyl-Ether in Various Injection Strategies
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: emissions, numerical modeling, RCCI, start of injection, unburned hydrocarbons
Reactivity control compression ignition engines illustrated suitable abilities in emission reduction beside high thermal efficiency. In this research, nine various direct fuel injection strategies were studied numerically: three cases with single injection strategy and six cases with split injection and different start of injection (SOI). In all simulated cases, equivalence ratio kept constant (i.e., 0.3). Among various strategies, single injection showed higher IMEP as a factor of efficiency with about 5.39 bar that occurred at SOI = 60 before top dead center (bTDC), while lower efficiency was observed for split injection case with 50%-50% injections of fuel in each injection stage. Start of combustion (SOC), burn duration and CA50 as factors for combustion characteristics were affected with SOI changes. In single SOI strategies, more advanced injection caused more advanced SOC where there was about 1.3 CAD advancing from 40 to 80 bTDC injection. Spilt SOI showed more advanced SOC, wh... [more]

Lithodynamic Processes along the Seashore in the Area of Planned Nuclear Power Plant Construction: A Case Study on Lubiatowo at Poland
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coastal structures, longshore sediment transport, nuclear power plant, South Baltic coastal zone, wave climate
The Polish government has made a decision to build a nuclear power plant (NPP) in the South Baltic coastal zone. This means that three major types of structures will be located in the nearshore: (1) breakwaters and a wharf where ships may dock to load and unload cargo (harbor), (2) seawalls protecting the shore against erosion and storm surge floods, and (3) an underwater piping system for cold water intake and heated water discharge. This study determines the dominant directions and rate of sediment transport for the coastline section in the vicinity of the projected Polish NPP (ca. 100,000 m3/year), as well as assesses current changes at this coastline location on the basis of field measurements and mathematical modeling.

Energy Market Prices in Times of COVID-19: The Case of Electricity and Natural Gas in Spain
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: COVID-19, electricity prices, jumps, natural gas prices, spark spread, stochastic models
The COVID-19 pandemic is having a strong impact on the economies of all countries, negatively affecting almost all sectors. This paper compares Spanish electricity and natural gas prices in the first half-year of 2020 with the prices expected for that period at the end of 2019. The half-year of 2020 selected coincides with the period of greatest impact of COVID-19 on Spanish society. Expected prices and their future probability distributions are calculated using a stochastic model with deterministic and stochastic parts; the stochastic part includes mean-reverting and jumps behaviour. The model is calibrated with 2016−2019 daily spot prices for electricity and with day-ahead prices for natural gas. The results show large monthly differences between the prices expected at the end of the year 2019 and the actual prices for the half-year; in May 2020, wholesale electricity prices are found to be EUR 31.60/MWh lower than expected, i.e., 60% lower. In the case of natural gas, the prices in... [more]

Assessment of Petrol and Natural Gas Vehicle Carbon Oxides Emissions in the Laboratory and On-Road Tests
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbon oxides, Compressed Natural Gas, on-road tests, portable emissions measurement systems (PEMS), vehicles emission
The problem of global warming and the related climate change requires solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, in particular CO2. As a result, newly manufactured cars consume less fuel and emit lower amounts of CO2. In terms of exhaust emissions and fuel consumption, old cars are significantly inferior to the more recent models. In Poland, for instance, the average age of passenger cars is approximately 13 years. Therefore, apart from developing new solutions in the cars produced today, it is important to focus on measures that enable the reduction in CO2 emissions in older vehicles. These methods include the adaptation of used cars to run on gaseous fuels. Natural gas is a hydrocarbon fuel that is particularly preferred in terms of CO2 emissions. The article presents the results of research of carbon oxides emission (CO, CO2) in the exhaust gas of a passenger car fueled by petrol and natural gas. The emissions were measured under the conditions of the New European Driving Cycle (... [more]

Minimum Leading Edge Protection Application Length to Combat Rain-Induced Erosion of Wind Turbine Blades
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coatings, leading edge erosion, repair, wind energy, wind turbine blades
Leading edge erosion (LEE) repairs of wind turbine blades (WTBs) involve infield application of leading edge protection (LEP) solutions. The industry is currently aiming to use factory based LEP coatings that can applied to the WTBs before they are shipped out for installation. However, one of the main challenges related to these solutions is the choice of a minimum LEP application length to be applied in the spanwise direction of the WTBs. Generally, coating suppliers apply 10−20 m of LEP onto the blades starting from the tip of the blade using the “rule of thumb”, and no studies in the literature exist that stipulate how these LEP lengths can be calculated. In this study, we extend the scope of a recently developed long-term probabilistic framework to determine the minimum LEP application length required for WTBs to combat rain-induced erosion. A parametric study is performed where different wind turbines with varying power ratings of 2.1 MW to 15 MW at different Dutch sites ranging... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aesthetic impact, European projects, renewable energies, solar energy systems, urban integration
Social acceptance and aesthetic impact of renewable energy (RE) in cities are topics scarcely considered in the literature even though they have attracted growing interest. Innovative European-funded projects, therefore, should start to consider these concepts. This paper provides an innovative review of European projects with the aim of identifying those with actual implementation of RE and energy storage systems in urban environments and their concern for aesthetic impact. The search considered the five most relevant programs related to RE and climate change mitigation, including almost 14,000 projects. Furthermore, a survey and some interviews allowed to collect data about the selected projects. 0.1% of reviewed projects aimed at the actual installation of RE on an urban scale. However, there is a recent growing trend. The most used RE was solar, especially photovoltaic, while the most common system for energy storage was lithium batteries. We can affirm that these European projects... [more]

An Optimal Power Flow Algorithm for the Simulation of Energy Storage Systems in Unbalanced Three-Phase Distribution Grids
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery storage, distribution grid, Energy Storage, low voltage grid, OPF, optimal power flow, three-phase optimal power flow, TOPF, unbalanced power flow
An optimal power flow algorithm for unbalanced three-phase distribution grids is presented in this paper as a new tool for grid planning on low voltage level. As additional equipment like electric vehicles, heat pumps or solar power systems can sometimes cause unbalanced power flows, existing algorithms have to be adapted. In comparison to algorithms considering balanced power flows, the presented algorithm uses a complete model of a three-phase four-wire low voltage grid. Additionally, a constraint for the voltage unbalance in the grid is introduced. The algorithm can be used to optimize the operation of energy storage systems in unbalanced systems. The used grid model, constraints, objective function and solver are explained in detail. A validation of the algorithm using a commercial tool is done. Additionally, three exemplary optimizations are performed to show possible applications for this tool.

Experimental and Simulation of Diesel Engine Fueled with Biodiesel with Variations in Heat Loss Model
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, cylinder pressure, heat loss, heat release rate, load, python
This study presents an experimental investigation and thermodynamic 0D modeling of the combustion of a compression-ignition engine, fueled by an alternative fuel based on neem biodiesel (B100) as well as conventional diesel (D100). The study highlights the effects of the engine load at 50%, 75% and 100% and the influence of the heat loss models proposed by Woschni, Eichelberg and Hohenberg on the variation in the cylinder pressure. The study shows that the heat loss through the cylinder wall is more pronounced during diffusion combustion regardless of the nature of the fuels tested and the load range required. The cylinder pressures when using B100 estimated at 89 bars are relatively higher than when using D100, about 3.3% greater under the same experimental conditions. It is also observed that the problem of the high pressure associated with the use of biodiesels in engines can be solved by optimizing the ignition delay. The net heat release rate remains roughly the same when using D1... [more]

Water Resistance of Torrefied Wood Pellets Prepared by Different Methods
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: small-scale use, torrefaction, water resistance, wood pellets
Torrefaction used in combination with pelletization is a promising technology to upgrade solid biofuels and has been demonstrated worldwide. In comparison with normal biomass pellets, which disintegrate under wet conditions, one of the advantages of torrefied biomass pellets is better water resistance. An understanding of the differences in water proof properties for torrefied biomass pellets by different production schemes can promote their further application. In the communication, various torrefied pellets were exposed to indoor and outdoor conditions, and changes in moisture content and diameter were examined. Two production schemes for the torrefied pellets were used for comparison: the torrefaction of wood chips followed by pelletization (pre-torrefaction) and the pelletization of wood chips followed by torrefaction (post-torrefaction). It was found that the post-torrefied pellets had much lower moisture levels than the pre-torrefied pellets in both indoor and outdoor tests. In t... [more]

A Theoretical Model for Voltage-Dependent Photocurrent Collection in CdTe Solar Cells
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CdTe solar cells, collection loss, photocurrent
The classic solar cell model assumes that the photo-generated current is a constant, independent of the cell’s output voltage. Experimental data of CdTe solar cells, however, show that the photocurrent collection efficiency decreases with the increase of the cell’s output voltage. In this work, we proposed a theoretical model for the CdTe thin-film cell, which assumes that the loss of photocurrent in the CdTe absorber is primarily due to the minority carrier recombination in the neutral region and at the back contact. By solving the neutral region’s diffusion equation, with proper boundary conditions, we have obtained the analytical expressions of the photocurrent collection efficiency and the cell’s J-V performance. Our theoretical results agree well with the experimental data. According to our theoretical model, the CdTe thin-film solar cell has an optimized p-doping level. A higher doping density may not be always good for a CdTe solar cell due to the reduced depletion width and dec... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery cell, battery packs, capacity, PCM, SCM, SOH
The parameter inconsistency of the battery cells and the series-parallel connection mode are closely related to the battery pack capacity. Studying the degree of influence of battery pack capacity by battery cell parameters is of great significance to the series-parallel design of battery packs. This paper establishes battery cell models and battery pack models with different topologies. In the MATLAB/Simulink environment, simulation studies were conducted to study the influence of the battery pack capacity by the monomer parameters as the number of cells in series and parallel in the topology changes. Then, from a statistical point of view, the simulation results were analyzed in principle. Finally, a small-scale battery pack experimental platform was built in the laboratory environment to verify the correctness of the simulation conclusions and theoretical analysis.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: comprehensive heat transfer performance, enhanced heat transfer factor, fluid flow, microchannel heat sink
Temperature has a great influence on the normal operation and service life of high-power electronic components. To cope with the increasingly severe heat problems in integrated circuits, an enhanced heat transfer factor E is introduced to evaluate the comprehensive heat transfer performance of microchannel heat sinks (MCHS). The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software was used to numerically study the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics in the cone-column combined heat sink. The research results obtained the velocity field and pressure field distribution of the heat sink structure in the range of 100 ≤ Re ≤ 700. When Re changes, the change law of pressure drop ΔP, friction factor f, average Nussel number Nuave, average substrate temperature T, and enhanced heat transfer factor E, are compared with the circular MCHS. The results show that the uniform arrangement of the cones inside the cone-column combined heat sink can change the flow state of the cooling medium in the mic... [more]

Keywords: CO2 emission, emission driving forces, heat pump, power to heat
Heating and cooling sectors contribute to approximately 50% of energy consumption in the European Union. Considering the fact that heating is mostly based on fossil fuels, it is then evident that its decarbonization is one of the crucial tasks for achieving climate change prevention goals. At the same time, electricity sectors across the globe are undergoing a rapid transformation in order to accommodate the growing capacities of non-dispatchable solar and wind generators. One of the proposed solutions to achieve heating sector decarbonization and non-dispatchable generators power system integration is sector coupling, where heat pumps are perceived as a perfect fit. Air source heat pumps enable a rapid improvement in local air quality by replacing conventional heating sources, but at the same time, they put additional stress on the power system.
