Ning Gao, Xin Lin, Weimin Wu, Frede Blaabjerg
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active damping, battery energy storage system, disturbance observer, LCL filter, power conversion system
Adopting the battery energy storage system is an effective way to compensate the continuously growing fluctuating power generated by renewable sources. The power conversion system is considered as one of the core equipment used for interfacing battery packs to the grid in a battery energy storage system. This paper aims to apply an improved active damping control to a grid-tied power conversion system with LCL filter to attenuate its inherent resonance characteristics. The anti-interference ability is enhanced by estimating the second-order derivation of grid-injected current based on a modified disturbance observer. Meanwhile, the negative effects of parameter mismatch are equivalent to unmeasurable disturbances, which are possible to be compensated by subtracting the estimated values from the modulated voltage references. Moreover, the design method and robustness issue of the disturbance observer are discussed in detail. The presented control algorithm is implemented based on Simuli... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Australian energy mix, hosting capacity, over-voltage, system strength, thermal capacity, tidal energy
This paper outlines a methodology to determine the amount of renewable energy that can be accommodated in a power system before adverse impacts such as over-voltage, over-loading and system instability occur. This value is commonly known as hosting capacity. This paper identifies when the transmission network local hosting capacity might be limited because of static and dynamic network limits. Thus, the proposed methodology can effectively be used in assessing new interconnection requests and provides an estimation of how much and where the new renewable generation can be located such that network upgrades are minimized. The proposed approach was developed as one of the components of the AUSTEn project, which was a three-year project to map Australia’s tidal energy resource in detail and to assess its economic feasibility and ability to contribute to the country’s energy needs. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, two wide area networks were developed in... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Alternative Fuels, engine, vibrations, vibroacoustic
Alternative fuels appeared soon after the first internal combustion engines were designed. The history of alternative fuels is basically as long as the history of the automotive industry. Initially, fuels whose physicochemical properties allowed for a change in parameters of the combustion process in order to achieve greater efficiency and reliability were searched for. Nowadays, there are significantly more variables; in addition to the above mentioned parameters, alternative fuels are being sought that will ensure environmental protection during vehicle operation and improve the ergonomics of use. This article outlines the results of the authors’ own comparative tests of vibrations of a vibroacoustic character. Based on a popular engine model, the vibration−acoustic responses of a system powered by two types of fuel, namely, diesel and biodiesel (B10), are compared. The research consists of comparing vibrations in both time and frequency domains. In the case of the time domain, the e... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cryogenic engine, liquid nitrogen engine, refrigeration system
It has been proven that performance gains in liquid nitrogen (LN2) engine systems, generating simultaneous cooling and auxiliary power, can be achieved through integration of a dedicated heat exchange fluid (HEF) circuit. The novel, HEF enhanced LN2 engine system can be utilised as an optimised hybrid solution for commercial refrigeration trucks. Although the benefits arising from HEF addition have been researched, there are no articles investigating the effect of changing the HEF composition on engine performance. This article reports a detailed experimental investigation on the performance of a novel, HEF enhanced LN2 engine system. The key contribution of the current study is the knowledge generated from investigating the impact of different HEF compositions on the engine performance under different HEF temperatures, N2 inlet conditions and engine speeds. The HEF composition was varied through changing the water content in the mixture. A thermodynamic model based on an idealised cyc... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 1,3-cyclohexadiene, 1,3,5-hexatriene, fuel additive, HCCI, ignition, photo-chemical
This study examines the possibility to provide control over ignition timing in a homogeneous charge compression ignition engine (HCCI) using a fuel additive whose molecular structure can be adapted upon exposure to UV light. The UV adapted molecule has a greater influence on retarding ignition than the original molecule, hence the ignition time can be modulated upon expose to UV light. The new fuel is referred to as a ‘smart fuel’. The fuel additive is in the form of 1,3-cyclohexadiene (CHD), upon UV exposure it undergoes electro-cyclic ring opening to form 1,3,5-hexatriene (HT). Various solutions of iso-octane, n-heptane and CHD have been irradiated by UV light for different amounts of time. CHD to HT conversion was examined using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. A primary reference fuel (PRF) mixture of 90% iso-octane and 10% n-heptane was used as a baseline in an optically accessible combustion chamber in a large bore, single cylinder compression ignition engine. April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active network management, distributed PV integration, PV interconnection agreement, renewable integration
With the increasing share of distributed energy resources on the electric grid, utility companies are facing significant decisions about infrastructure upgrades. An alternative to extensive and capital-intensive upgrades is to offer non-firm interconnection opportunities to distributed generators, via a coordinated operation of utility scale resources. This paper introduces a novel flexible interconnection option based on the last-in, first-out principles of access aimed at minimizing the unnecessary non-firm generation energy curtailment by balancing access rights and contribution to thermal overloads. Although we focus on solar photovoltaic (PV) plants in this work, the introduced flexible interconnection option applies to any distributed generation technology. The curtailment risk of individual non-firm PV units is evaluated across a range of PV penetration levels in a yearlong quasi-static time-series simulation on a real-world feeder. The results show the importance of the size of... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: key controlling factors, multiple regression, production prediction, shale gas well, Weiyuan block
The estimated ultimate recovery (EUR) of a single shale gas well is one of the important evaluation indicators for the scale and benefit development of shale gas, which is affected by many factors such as geological and engineering, so its accurate prediction is difficult. In order to realize the accurate prediction of ultimate recovery, this study considered 172 shale gas wells in the Weiyuan block as samples and selected 19 geological and engineering factors that affect the ultimate recovery of shale gas wells. Furthermore, eight key controlling factors were selected by means of the Pearson correlation coefficient and maximum mutual information coefficient comprehensive evaluation method. The data were divided into training and testing samples. Different numbers of training samples were selected and seven schemes were designed. Based on the key controlling factors, the ultimate recovery prediction model for shale gas wells in this block was established through multiple regression met... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: IPOS, model, power transformers, Solid State Transformer
Nowadays, the demand for high power converters for DC applications, such as renewable sources or ultra-fast chargers for electric vehicles, is constantly growing. Galvanic isolation is mandatory in most of these applications. In this context, the Solid State Transformer (SST) converter plays a fundamental role. The adoption of the Medium Frequency Transformers (MFT) guarantees galvanic isolation in addition to high performance in reduced size. In the present paper, a multi MFT structure is proposed as a solution to improve the power density and the modularity of the system. Starting from 20kW planar transformer model, experimentally validated, a multi-transformer structure is analyzed. After an analytical treatment of the Input Parallel Output Series (IPOS) structure, an equivalent electrical model of a 200kW IPOS (made by 10 MFTs) is introduced. The model is validated by experimental measurements and tests.

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: asymmetric WEC, load torque, OpenFOAM, optimum PTO, RANS
This study primarily investigates an optimum energy conversion efficiency of asymmetric wave energy converter (WEC). A power take-off (PTO) system that provides a constant load torque opposite to pitch motion was implemented. Incident wave conditions were selected based on the measured data in the western sea of Jeju Island, South Korea. An optimum torque was calculated by comparing the time-averaged extracted power with various PTO load torque. InterDyMFoam solver based on Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations were used in an OpenFOAM v4.0 framework—an open-source computational fluid dynamics model—against the experimental results derived from the wave flume. The upward pitch excursion was induced by wave force due to the asymmetric WEC characteristics; however, the downward pitch excursion depends on its weight. Numerically, the PTO torque was only loaded in uni-direction against the upward pitch motion. Moreover, the optimum PTO torque was estimated by comparing the time-... [more]
Predicting Capacity Fade in Silicon Anode-Based Li-Ion Batteries
Harika Dasari, Eric Eisenbraun
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: loads, NCA, NMC, particle size, volume fraction
While silicon anodes hold promise for use in lithium-ion batteries owing to their very high theoretical storage capacity and relatively low discharge potential, they possess a major problem related to their large volume expansion that occurs with battery aging. The resulting stress and strain can lead to mechanical separation of the anode from the current collector and an unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), resulting in capacity fade. Since capacity loss is in part dependent on the cell materials, two different electrodes, Lithium Nickel Oxide or LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 (NCA) and LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 (NMC 111), were used in combination with silicon to study capacity fade effects using simulations in COMSOL version 5.5. The results of these studies provide insight into the effects of anode particle size and electrolyte volume fraction on the behavior of silicon anode-based batteries with different positive electrodes. It was observed that the performance of a porous matrix of soli... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biodiesel, e-beam irradiation, FAME, flow system, physicochemical properties, sterilization
The problem of microbial growth in fuels, especially biofuels, is a very important issue. Water is a necessity for microbial growth to occur. Unfortunately, it is very hard to exclude all water from fuel systems during daily operations, especially when biodiesel is added to the fuel mix. The aim of this work was to investigate the impact of ionizing radiation on selected properties of fatty acids methyl esters in order to evaluate the possibility of using irradiation techniques to sterilize biodiesel and its blends. Ionizing radiation influences the chemical composition of biodiesel samples containing especially unsaturated bonds. Irradiation was performed in a specially designed flow system. The tested parameters were compared with the normative values from the ISO 14214 standard. Density, kinematic viscosity, flash point, water content and cold filter plugging point as a macroscopic parameters do not change despite their irradiation with ionizing radiation. Change was observed in mic... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aeroacoustics, dispersion, dissipation, local radial point interpolation cumulant LBM, wind turbine
The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has recently been used to simulate wave propagation, one of the challenging aspects of wind turbine modeling and simulation. However, standard LB methods suffer from the instability that occurs at low viscosities and from its characteristic lattice uniformity, which results in issues of accuracy and computational efficiency following mesh refinement. The local radial point interpolation cumulant lattice Boltzmann method (LRPIC-LBM) is proposed in this paper to overcome these shortcomings. The LB equation is divided into collision and streaming steps. The collision step is modeled by the cumulant method, one of the stable LB methods at low viscosities. In addition, the streaming step, which is naturally a pure advection equation, is discretized in time and space using the Lax−Wendroff scheme and the local radial point interpolation method (RPIM), a mesh free method. We describe the propagation of planar acoustic waves, including the temporal decay of a... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: consumers, e-mobility, electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, knowledge, plug-in electric vehicles, sustainable transport, telephone survey, willingness to buy
Limited consumer knowledge reduces the chances of the spread of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs), and hence slows down AFV market spread. In our empirical survey conducted in the first quarter of 2020 among 1002 Poles planning to buy a car in the next 12 months or who have just bought one, we examine what socio-economic and attitudinal factors influence their willingness to buy an AFV. In particular, we are interested in exploring how AFV knowledge related to understanding of the differences between hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs), as well as brand recognition associate with the willingness to buy. To the best our knowledge, this is a unique study among consumers in Central and Eastern Europe, characterized by lower exposure to AFVs and lower purchasing power. Our results indicate that males with pro-environmental beliefs and behaviors who are interested in modern automotive technologies and have good AFV br... [more]

Keywords: forecasts, Lasso, Numerical Weather Predictions, photovoltaic generation, satellite images, spatio-temporal, weather stations
The efficient integration of photovoltaic (PV) production in energy systems is conditioned by the capacity to anticipate its variability, that is, the capacity to provide accurate forecasts. From the classical forecasting methods in the state of the art dealing with a single power plant, the focus has moved in recent years to spatio-temporal approaches, where geographically dispersed data are used as input to improve forecasts of a site for the horizons up to 6 h ahead. These spatio-temporal approaches provide different performances according to the data sources available but the question of the impact of each source on the actual forecasting performance is still not evaluated. In this paper, we propose a flexible spatio-temporal model to generate PV production forecasts for horizons up to 6 h ahead and we use this model to evaluate the effect of different spatial and temporal data sources on the accuracy of the forecasts. The sources considered are measurements from neighboring PV pla... [more]

Keywords: Al-based alloy, hydrogen production, low melting metal, metal smelting
In this age of human civilization, there is a need for more efficient, cleaner, and renewable energy as opposed to that provided by nonrenewable sources such as coal and oil. In this sense, hydrogen energy has been proven to be a better choice. In this paper, a portable graphite crucible metal smelting furnace was used to prepare ten multi-element aluminum alloy ingots with different components. The microstructure and phase composition of the ingots and reaction products were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The reaction was carried out in a constant temperature water bath furnace at 60 °C, and the hydrogen production performance of the multi-element aluminum alloys in different proportions was compared by the drainage gas collection method. The experimental results show that the as-cast microstructure of Al−Ga−In−Sn aluminum alloy is composed of a solid solution of Al and part of Ga, and a second phas... [more]

Guirong Wu, Jun Cong Ge, Nag Jung Choi
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biodiesel, combustion and emission characteristics, engine performance, ethanol additives, idling speed
Biodiesel is known for its high cetane number and high oxygen content among other advantages, but its high viscosity and density are not trivial issues for fuel flow and atomization, especially under idling conditions. Due to low cylinder temperature and incomplete combustion, engine idling is one of the worst operating conditions. As a common fuel additive, ethanol can address some of the shortcomings of biodiesel. This work evaluated the combustion and emission characteristics of different concentrations of ethanol additives on a diesel engine fueled with palm oil biodiesel under idling conditions. The results show that ethanol helps to increase peak cylinder pressure and heat release rate, suppressing the production of certain emissions with a maximum reduction in smoke opacity of 71%.

Keywords: efficiency, load aggregation, LVDC, photovoltaic, power converters, self-sufficiency index
The increasing penetration of PV into the distribution grid leads to congestion, causing detrimental power quality issues. Moreover, the multiple small photovoltaic (PV) systems and battery energy storage systems (BESSs) result in increasing conversion losses. A low-voltage DC (LVDC) backbone to interconnect these assets would decrease the conversion losses and is a promising solution for a more optimal integration of PV systems. The multiple small PV systems can be replaced by shared assets with large common PV installations and a large BESS. Sharing renewable energy and aggregation are activities that are stimulated by the European Commission and lead to a substantial benefit in terms of self-consumption index (SCI) and self-sufficiency index (SSI). In this study, the benefit of an LVDC backbone is investigated compared to using a low-voltage AC (LVAC) system. It is found that the cable losses increase by 0.9 percent points and the conversion losses decrease by 12 percent points comp... [more]
Opportunities for the State-of-the-Art Production of LIB Electrodes—A Review

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery electrode, drying techniques, lithium-ion battery, solvent chemistry
A sustainable shift from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs) is essential to achieve a considerable reduction in emissions. The production of Li-ion batteries (LIBs) used in EVs is an energy-intensive and costly process. It can also lead to significant embedded emissions depending on the source of energy used. In fact, about 39% of the energy consumption in LIB production is associated with drying processes, where the electrode drying step accounts for about a half. Despite the enormous energy consumption and costs originating from drying processes, they are seldomly researched in the battery industry. Establishing knowledge within the LIB industry regarding state-of-the-art drying techniques and solvent evaporation mechanisms is vital for optimising process conditions, detecting alternative solvent systems, and discovering novel techniques. This review aims to give a summary of the state-of-the-art LIB processing techniques. An in-depth understanding o... [more]

Keywords: bio-oil, biochar, meranti, pyrolysis, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, rubberwood, sengon, teakwood wood waste
The wood processing industry produces a significant amount of wood waste. Biomass valorization through pyrolysis has the potential to increase the added value of wood wastes. Pyrolysis is an important thermochemical process that can produce solid, liquid, and gas products. This paper aims to review the pyrolysis of wood wastes from Indonesia, including teak wood (Tectona grandis), meranti (Shorea sp.), sengon (Paraserianthes falcataria (L) Nielsen), and rubberwood (Hevea brasiliensis). The review is based on an in-depth study of reliable literatures, statistical data from government agencies, and direct field observations. The results showed that pyrolysis could be a suitable process to increase the added value of wood waste. Currently, slow pyrolysis is the most feasible for Indonesia, with the main product of charcoal. The efficiency of the slow pyrolysis process can be increased by harvesting also liquid and gaseous products. The use of the main product of pyrolysis in the form of c... [more]
Visual Characteristics of Afterimage under Dark Surround Conditions

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: afterimage, illumination engineering, mesopic vision, regression analysis, viewing glare
Three psycho-visual experiments were carried out to investigate visual afterimage characteristics of high luminance LEDs under dark surround conditions. The results show that the luminance of illumination, exposure time and background luminance are the primary factors influencing the afterimage’s duration, the color difference between stimulus and background, and visibility. Besides, visual afterimage characteristics are strongly correlated with the luminance contrast between the stimulus and the background, but not for the color difference with a white background. A third-order polynomial regression model was proposed to accurately estimate the afterimage duration, the color difference between stimulus and background, and visibility. The model performance showed high R-squared, low root-mean-square error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) values between the predicted and visual characteristics.

Keywords: acceleration, diesel engine, electric motor, hybrid electric vehicle, optimal control
A combustion engine-driven vehicle can be made more fuel efficient over some drive cycles by, for example, introducing electric machines and solutions for electrical energy storage within the vehicle’s driveline architecture. The possible benefits of different hybridization concepts depend on the architecture, i.e., the type of energy storage, and the placement and sizing of the different driveline components. This paper examines a diesel electric plug-in hybrid truck, where the powertrain includes a diesel engine supported with two electric motors, one supporting the crank shaft and one the turbocharger. Numerical optimal control was used to find energy-optimal control strategies during two different accelerations; the trade-off between using electrical energy and diesel fuel was evaluated using a simulation platform. Fixed-gear acceleration was performed to evaluate the contribution from the two electric motors in co-operation, and individual operation. A second acceleration test cas... [more]

Keywords: bifaciality factor, cell-to-module (CTM) ratio, module temperature, power gain, reflectance, solar cells, transparent mesh backsheet, white backsheet width
Due to their transparent rear side, bifacial modules can take advantage of rear side irradiance as opposed to monofacial modules. Glass or transparent backsheets are conventionally used as rear side encapsulation material. To increase coupling gains achieved through internal reflection at the module rear side, a white or reflecting mesh structure can be applied in the areas between the cells on the rear side material. In this study, an existing optical model based on a simplified ray tracing approach is extended to describe the effects achieved though this mesh structure. The model is further integrated into a complete cell-to-module loss and gain analysis. The performance of the mesh backsheet concept is assessed under varying parameters. The impact of mesh reflectance, bifaciality of the cell and width of the mesh compared to the cell spacing are investigated. Losses due to increased module temperature and gains due to internal reflection gains are compared. We confirm that the optim... [more]
Application of Liquid Hydrogen Carriers in Hydrogen Steelmaking

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fossil-free steel, hydrogen direct reduction, hydrogen storage, industrial decarbonization, liquid hydrogen carriers
Steelmaking is responsible for approximately one third of total industrial carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Hydrogen (H2) direct reduction (H-DR) may be a feasible route towards the decarbonization of primary steelmaking if H2 is produced via electrolysis using fossil-free electricity. However, electrolysis is an electricity-intensive process. Therefore, it is preferable that H2 is predominantly produced during times of low electricity prices, which is enabled by the storage of H2. This work compares the integration of H2 storage in four liquid carriers, methanol (MeOH), formic acid (FA), ammonia (NH3) and perhydro-dibenzyltoluene (H18-DBT), in H-DR processes. In contrast to conventional H2 storage methods, these carriers allow for H2 storage in liquid form at moderate overpressures, reducing the storage capacity cost. The main downside to liquid H2 carriers is that thermochemical processes are necessary for both the storage and release processes, often with significant investment and o... [more]
