Kotchakarn Nantasaksiri, Patcharawat Charoen-Amornkitt, Takashi Machimura
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biomass, crop model, crop parameter, GIS, Napier grass, SWAT model, yield estimation
In Thailand, Napier grass is expected to play an important role as an energy resource for future power generation. To accomplish this goal, numerous areas are required for Napier grass plantations. Before introducing crops, the land potential of the country and the impact of crops on the environment should be assessed. The soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) model is very useful in investigating crop impacts and land potential. Unfortunately, the crop growth parameters of Napier grass are yet to be identified and, thus, conducting effective analysis has not been possible. Accordingly, in this study, parameter calibration and SWAT model validation of Napier grass production in Thailand was carried out using datasets from eight sites with 93 samples. Parameter sensitivity analysis was performed prior to parameter calibration, the results of which suggest that the radiation use efficiency and potential harvested index are both highly sensitive. The crop growth parameters were calibrated... [more]
An Experimental Study of the Decomposition and Carbonation of Magnesium Carbonate for Medium Temperature Thermochemical Energy Storage
Daniel Mahon, Gianfranco Claudio, Philip Eames
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: industrial waste heat, magnesium carbonate, thermal analysis, thermal energy storage, thermochemical energy storage
To improve the energy efficiency of an industrial process thermochemical energy storage (TCES) can be used to store excess or typically wasted thermal energy for utilisation later. Magnesium carbonate (MgCO3) has a turning temperature of 396 °C, a theoretical potential to store 1387 J/g and is low cost (~GBP 400/1000 kg). Research studies that assess MgCO3 for use as a medium temperature TCES material are lacking, and, given its theoretical potential, research to address this is required. Decomposition (charging) tests and carbonation (discharging) tests at a range of different temperatures and pressures, with selected different gases used during the decomposition tests, were conducted to gain a better understanding of the real potential of MgCO3 for medium temperature TCES. The thermal decomposition (charging) of MgCO3 has been investigated using thermal analysis techniques including simultaneous thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC), TGA with atta... April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: enzymatic hydrolysis, fermentable sugar, lignocellulosic biomass
Semi-natural grassland habitats are most often limited to animal grazing and low intensity farming. Their potential in bioenergy production is complicated due to the heterogeneity, variation, accessibility, and need for complex pre-treatment/hydrolysis techniques to convert into valuable products. In this research, fermentable sugar production efficiency from various habitats at various vegetation periods was evaluated. The highest fermentable sugar yields (above 0.2 g/g volatile solids) over a period of 3 years were observed from habitats “xeric and calcareous grasslands” (Natura 2000 code: 6120) and “semi-natural dry grasslands and scrubland facies on calcareous substrates” (Natura 2000 code: 6210). Both had a higher proportion of dicotyledonous plants. At the same time, the highest productivity (above 0.7 t sugar/ha) was observed from lowland hay meadows in the initial stage of the vegetation. Thus, despite variable yield-affecting factors, grasslands can be a potential resource for... [more]
Adaptive Single-Pole Auto-Reclosing Scheme Based on Secondary Arc Voltage Harmonic Signatures

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive single-pole auto-reclosing, harmonic, power system protection, secondary arc
This paper presents an advanced adaptive single-pole auto-reclosing (ASPAR) scheme based on harmonic characteristics of the secondary arc voltage. For analysis of the harmonics, short-time Fourier transform (STFT), which is a universal signal processing tool for transforming a signal from the time domain to the frequency domain, is utilized. STFT is applied to extract the abnormal harmonic signature from the voltage waveform of a faulted phase when a transient or permanent fault occurs on a power transmission line. The proposed scheme uses the total harmonic distortion (THD) factor to determine the fault type based on the variation and distortion characteristics of the harmonics. Harmonic components in the order of odd/even are also utilized to detect the secondary arc extinction time and guide the reclosing operation. Based on these factors, two coordinated algorithms are proposed to reduce the unnecessary dead time in conventional auto-reclosing methods and enable an optimal reclosin... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: alcohol blends, combustion noise, emissions, Ethanol, soot
Oxygenated fuels, in this case short carbon-chain alcohols, have been investigated as alternative fuels to power compression ignition engines. A major advantage of short-chain alcohols is that they can be produced from renewable resources, i.e., cultivated commodities or biomass-based biorefineries. However, before entering the market, the effects of short-chain alcohols on engine performance, exhaust emissions, noise and sound quality need to be understood. This work sheds light on the relationship between the physicochemical properties of the alcohol/diesel fuel blends (ethanol and 1-propanol) on engine performance, exhaust emissions and, for the first time, on noise and sound quality. It has been demonstrated that when the content of alcohol in blends increased, soot and soluble organic material emissions drastically decreased, mainly due to the increase of oxygen content in the fuel. Reduction in soot emissions combined with higher thermodynamic efficiency of alcohol fuels, with re... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active front-end (AFE), battery charging, electric vehicles (EVs), grid-connected converters, LCL filters, power factor corrector (PFC), ultra-fast charging (UFC)
State-of-the-art ultra-fast battery chargers for electric vehicles simultaneously require high efficiency and high power density, leading to a challenging power converter design. In particular, the grid-side filter, which ensures sinusoidal current absorption with low pulse-width modulation (PWM) harmonic content, can be a major contributor to the overall converter size and losses. Therefore, this paper proposes a complete analysis, design and optimization procedure of a three-phase LCL filter for a modular DC fast charger. First, an overview of the basic LCL filter modeling is provided and the most significant system transfer functions are identified. Then, the optimal ratio between grid-side and converter-side inductance is discussed, aiming for the maximum filtering performance. A novel design methodology, based on a graphical representation of the filter design space, is thus proposed. Specifically, several constraints on the LCL filtering elements are enforced, such that all feasi... [more]
An Active Cascaded Battery Voltage Balancing Circuit Based on Multi-Winding Transformer with Small Magnetizing Inductance
Young-Hwa Park, Rae-Young Kim, Yeong-Jun Choi
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active battery voltage balancing, battery management system, lithium-ion battery, multi-winding transformer
This paper covers the active voltage balancing method of secondary batteries. The number of applications using secondary batteries is increasing, and the batteries are normally connected in series/parallel to increase discharge cycle and power. The problem is that when there is a voltage imbalance between the cells or modules of a battery, there is a risk of an accident in the near-sighted way, shortening the life of the battery cells. Although this risk was prevented through passive balancing, this approach has limitations, including heat generation, long balancing time, and in the case of a battery that needs to be balanced between modules (or between stacks), its effectiveness decreases. Therefore, in this paper, an active cell balancing method that can overcome the limitations mentioned before is proposed. The proposed method uses a multi-winding transformer, and to increase the power density, the magnetizing inductance is decreased, and an auxiliary circuit is added. The validity... [more]

Jaeho Choi, Woo Jin Byun, DongHwan Kang, Jung Kyoo Lee
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: anodes, lithium-ion battery, manganese oxides, mesoporous manganese oxides
A mesoporous MnO network (MMN) structure and MMN/C composites were prepared and evaluated as anodes for high-energy and high-rate lithium-ion batteries (LIB) in comparison to typical manganese oxide nanoparticle (MnNP) and graphite anodes, not only in a half-cell but also in a full-cell configuration (assembled with an NCM523, LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2, cathode). With the mesoporous features of the MMN, the MMN/C exhibited a high capacity (approximately 720 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1) and an excellent cycling stability at low electrode resistance compared to the MnNP/C composite. The MMN/C composite also showed much greater rate responses than the graphite anode. Owing to the inherent high discharge (de-lithiation) voltage of the MMN/C than graphite as anodes, however, the MMN‖NCM523 full cell showed approximately 87.4% of the specific energy density of the Gr‖NCM523 at 0.2 C. At high current density above 0.2 C, the MMN‖NCM523 cell delivered much higher energy than the Gr‖NCM523 mainly due to th... [more]

Keywords: diesel engine performance, exhaust emissions, fluid mechanics, modeling and simulation, nonlinear dynamics
The flexibility of a crankshaft exhibits significant nonlinearities in the analysis of diesel engines performance, particularly at rotational speeds of around 2000 rpm. Given the explainable mathematical trends of the analytical model and the lack of available analytical modeling of the diesel engines intake manifold with a flexible crankshaft, the present study develops and validates such a model. In the present paper, the mass flow rate of air that goes from intake manifold into all the cylinders of the engine with a flexible crankshaft has been analytically modeled. The analytical models of the mass flow rate of air and gas speed dynamics have been validated using case studies and the ORNL and EPA Freeway standard drive cycles showing a relative error of 7.5% and 11%, respectively. Such values of relative error are on average less than those of widely recognized models in this field, such as the GT-Power and the CMEM, respectively. A simplified version for control applications of th... [more]

Keywords: experiment, field test, micro wind turbines, performance
Micro wind turbines can be structurally integrated on top of the solid base of noise barriers near highways. A number of performance factors were assessed with holistic experiments in wind tunnel and in the field. The wind turbines underperformed when exposed in yawed flow conditions. The theoretical cosθ theories for yaw misalignment did not always predict power correctly. Inverter losses turned out to be crucial especially in standby mode. Combination of standby losses with yawed flow losses and low wind speed regime may even result in a net power consuming turbine. The micro wind turbine control system for maintaining optimal power production underperformed in the field when comparing tip speed ratios and performance coefficients with the values recorded in the wind tunnel. The turbine was idling between 20%−30% of time as it was assessed for sites with annual average wind speeds of three to five meters per second without any power production. Finally, the field test analysis showed... [more]

Keywords: accumulating layer, Energy Efficiency, European climate, solar wall, transparent insulation
One of the strategies to improve the energy performance of buildings may be the use of passive solar systems with transparent insulation. In the article, a numerical model of solar wall (SW) with transparent insulation (TI) obtained using the method of elementary balances is presented. On this basis, numerical simulations of the behavior of SW with a transparent honeycomb insulation made of modified cellulose acetate were performed for 4 different climatic conditions in Europe (Stockholm, Warsaw, Paris, and Rome). For each location, the calculations were carried out for three different TI thickness values (48, 88, and 128 mm), for thermal diffusivity of the accumulating layer (AL) ranging from 4.32 × 10−7 to 8.43 × 10−7 m2/s, and for its thickness ranging from 0.1 to 0.5 m. The purpose of simulations was to select the appropriate material and thickness of AL and TI for the climatic conditions. The following solutions proved to be the most favorable: Stockholm: TI—thk. 128 mm, AL—sand-l... [more]

Keywords: exergy cost analysis, hybrid photovoltaic-thermal solar panels, seasonal storage
A real case study of an energy system based on a Solar Assisted Heat Pump (SAHP) fed by hybrid photovoltaic-thermal solar panels (PVT) and seasonal storage (SS) is presented in this paper. Exergy and exergy cost analyses are proposed as complementary methods for the assessment and better understanding of the efficiency of this cogeneration solar configuration. The system performance takes advantage of storage heat in summer, when the solar resource is high in Spain, and is then later consumed during the cold winter (heating season). The building is devoted to social housing, and it is currently under construction. The assessment is based on simulations developed using TRNSYS, a dynamic simulation software for energy systems. Results show that the unit exergy cost of the solar field is around 6. The cost of the seasonal storage is higher, about 13, and its formation is affected both by its own irreversibility and by the irreversibility of the PVT solar field. The cost of the heat delive... Review of Flow-Control Devices for Wind-Turbine Performance Enhancement
Md Zishan Akhter, Farag Khalifa Omar
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aerodynamic enhancement, flow control, load alleviation, noise attenuation, power augmentation, smart rotor control
It is projected that, in the following years, the wind-energy industry will maintain its rapid growth over the last few decades. Such growth in the industry has been accompanied by the desirability and demand for larger wind turbines aimed at harnessing more power. However, the fact that massive turbine blades inherently experience increased fatigue and ultimate loads is no secret, which compromise their structural lifecycle. Accordingly, this demands higher overhaul-and-maintenance (O&M) costs, leading to higher cost of energy (COE). Introduction of flow-control devices on the wind turbine is a plausible solution to this issue. Flow-control mechanisms feature the ability to effectively enhance/suppress turbulence, advance/delay flow transition, and prevent/promote separation, leading to enhancement in aerodynamic and aeroacoustics performance, load alleviation and fluctuation suppression, and eventually wind turbine power augmentation. These flow-control devices are operated primarily... [more]
Homeowners’ Willingness to Make Investment in Energy Efficiency Retrofit of Residential Buildings in China and Its Influencing Factors
Ce Huang, Jiefang Ma, Kun Song
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, homeowner, residential retrofit, willingness to pay
In China, energy efficiency retrofit of residential buildings is entering a new stage in which homeowners are the main subject. In order to investigate homeowners’ willingness to invest and to analyze its influencing factors, interviews and a questionnaire survey were conducted in central Tianjin, China. The results show that homeowners have a certain willingness to invest in energy efficiency retrofit but that their willingness to pay (WTP) is far from enough to cover the total cost. Among the influencing factors, the homeowner’s age, education level, and retrofit experience as well as the age and floor area of their home are significantly related to their WTP. The reasons for the impact of these factors are further discussed, including the influences of China’s previous housing policies and retrofit policies. Policy recommendations to promote investment by homeowners are suggested based on the findings.
Application of a New Dispatch Methodology to Identify the Influence of Inertia Supplying Wind Turbines on Day-Ahead Market Sales Volumes
Henning Thiesen, Clemens Jauch
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: inertia, power market, power system inertia, synthetic inertia, wind turbines
Power system inertia is an essential part of grid frequency control. The number of synchronously connected machines, which inherently provide inertia, is decreasing due to the transition to renewable energies. Conventional generation units are being replaced by renewable generation units which are connected to the grid via frequency converters. Some power systems already suffer from too little power system inertia. Hence, inertia is a valuable yet non-traded commodity. A day-ahead dispatch methodology to secure power system inertia was developed and is applied and assessed in this work. Day-ahead market data of the combined market of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland is used. If the superimposition of sell and buy bids results in insufficient inertia, the dispatch algorithm is applied. In decreasing price order, non-inertia-providing sell bids get replaced by the following sell bids in the merit order. The iterative process is repeated until sufficient inertia is in the syst... Keywords: droplet dynamics, Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, two-phase flow, VOF model, water management
Effective water management increases the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The liquid droplet movement mechanism in the cathode channel, the gas-liquid two-phase flow pattern, and the resulting pressure drop are important to water management in PEMFCs. This work employed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with a volume of fluid (VOF) to simulate the effects of two operating parameters on the liquid water flow in the cathode flow channel: Gas diffusion layer (GDL) pore shape for water emergence, and distance between GDL pores. From seven pore shapes considered in this work, the longer the windward side of the micropore is, the larger the droplet can grow, and the duration of droplet growth movement will be longer. In the cases of two micropores for water introduction, a critical pore distance is noted for whether two droplets coalesce. When the micropore distance was shorter than this critical value, different droplets coalesce after the droplets grew to a cer... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery ageing, degradation, lithium-ion batteries, temperature control, thermal management
Heat generation and therefore thermal transport plays a critical role in ensuring performance, ageing and safety for lithium-ion batteries (LIB). Increased battery temperature is the most important ageing accelerator. Understanding and managing temperature and ageing for batteries in operation is thus a multiscale challenge, ranging from the micro/nanoscale within the single material layers to large, integrated LIB packs. This paper includes an extended literature survey of experimental studies on commercial cells investigating the capacity and performance degradation of LIB. It compares the degradation behavior in terms of the influence of operating conditions for different chemistries and cell sizes. A simple thermal model for linking some of these parameters together is presented as well. While the temperature appears to have a large impact on ageing acceleration above room temperature during cycling for all studied cells, the effect of SOC and C rate appear to be rather cell depend... Keywords: biodiesel, bioethanol, Biofuels, Biomass, energy content, microalgae, renewable energies
Energy-storage metabolites such as neutral lipids and carbohydrates are valuable compounds for liquid biofuel production. The aim of this work is to elucidate the main biological responses of two algae species known for their effective energy-rich compound accumulation in nitrogen limitation and day−night cycles: Nannochloropsis gaditana, a seawater species, and Parachlorella kessleri, a freshwater species. Lipid and carbohydrate production are investigated, as well as cell resistance to mechanical disruption for energy-rich compound release. Nitrogen-depleted N. gaditana showed only a low consumption of energy-storage molecules with a non-significant preference for neutral lipids (TAG) and carbohydrates in day−night cycles. However, it did accumulate significantly fewer carbohydrates than P. kessleri. Following this, the highest levels of productivity for N. gaditana in chemostat cultures at four levels of nitrogen limitation were found to be 3.4 and 2.2 × 10−3 kg/m2·d for carbohydrat... [more]

This paper presents an optimal design for a nanogrid/microgrid for desert camps in the city of Hafr Al-Batin in Saudi Arabia. The camps were designed to operate as separate nanogrids or to operate as an interconnected microgrid. The hybrid nanogrid/microgrid considered in this paper consists of a solar system, storage batteries, diesel generators, inverter, and load components. To offer the designer/operator various choices, the problem was formulated as a multi-objective optimization problem considering two objective functions, namely: the cost of electricity (COE) and the loss of power supply probability (LPSP). Furthermore, various component models were implemented, which offer a variety of equipment compilation possibilities. The formulated problem was then solved using the multi-objective evolutionary algorithm, based on both dominance and decomposition (MOEA/DD). Two cases were investigated corresponding to the two proposed modes of operation, i.e., nanogrid operation mode and mi... [more]

About ten hydroelectric power plants realized from 1970 to 1990 in Romania are confronted with stator overheating. The developed mathematical model analyzes the voltage stability based on modal analysis of the Jacobian matrix, identifying the hazardous modes of variation between voltage and flow rate, correlated with the characteristics of the analyzed generators and their response to these variations. Vulnerable elements in the system for inductive and capacitive modes of operation are identified. In these conditions, hydro generators cannot attend the secondary voltage control, not even for a frequency power dependency control. The elaborated mathematical model was tested at the hydroelectric power plants Gilceag, Mariselu, and Susag with similar functioning conditions. The necessary conditions for stator ventilation and variation of flow hydrodynamic parameters during the operation were established. The theoretical model was tested with an experimental method applied separately for... [more]

Swirling flow with the formation of a precessing vortex core (PVC) in the draft tube model of a hydroturbine was studied. Experiments were performed on an aerodynamic setup under transient operating conditions of the hydroturbine. The turbine operating conditions were varied by continuously changing the flow rate at a constant runner speed. The transition from the partial load regime, when a precessing vortex core is formed, to the best efficiency point without a core is considered. Applied to this task, a comparison of the windowed Fourier transform with wavelet analysis is given. The dependence of the PVC lifetime in the transient regime correlates with the transient time. It is shown that the velocity profiles and the spectrum of pressure pulsations in transient regimes change quasistatically between part-load operation and the best efficiency point of the turbine. The phase-averaged velocity distributions in the transient regimes show that a transient regime is a sequence of quasis... [more]

Keywords: Alaska, Arctic, bifacial PV, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar photovoltaics (PV)
This paper presents the first systematic comparison between south-facing monofacial and bifacial photovoltaic (PV) modules, as well as between south-facing bifacial and vertical east-west facing bifacial PV modules in Alaska. The state’s solar industry, driven by the high price of energy and dropping equipment costs, is quickly growing. The challenges posed by extreme sun angles in Alaska’s northern regions also present opportunities for unique system designs. Annual bifacial gains of 21% were observed between side by side south-facing monofacial and bifacial modules. Vertical east-west bifacial modules had virtually the same annual production as south-facing latitude tilt bifacial modules, but with different energy production profiles.
