Yearly Electrical Energy Assessment of a Photovoltaic Platform/Geothermal Heat Pump Prosumer
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat pump, photovoltaic system, prosumer, renewable based energy mix, self-consumption
Romania introduced in 2018 an amendment to the national law 220/2008 by including the Prosumer concept that allows investors in grid-connected photovoltaic systems with a capacity up to 27 kWp to receive a feed in tariff for the electricity delivered to the grid representing approximatively one third of the price paid when the electricity is consumed from the grid. Thus, the challenge is to use as much as possible the photovoltaic power when it is produced. A methodology is developed to evaluate how much of the electrical energy output of a grid-connected photovoltaic platform is used by a geothermal heat pump for space heating in a building. A numerical simulation is performed in Trnsys17 based on locally measured meteorological parameters over a period of one entire year. A case study is presented for which the characteristics of the building, of the heat pump system and of the photovoltaic system are described and integrated into the transient simulation environment. The numerical r... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: assessment of renewable energy development, European Union countries, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sustainable energy development
The global economic development is, to a great extent, dependent on access to large amounts of cheap energy sources. The growing social awareness of ecology and the enormous damage to the Earth’s ecosystem due to the production of energy from conventional sources have forced fundamental changes in the energy sector. Renewable energy is considered to be an opportunity for such changes. The current state of the art allows such changes to be made without restricting economic development. Therefore, activities related to the energy transition are being taken all over the world. The European Union has definitely managed to achieve the most tangible effects in this regard. This article presents the findings of the research aimed at presenting the current state of renewable energy in the European Union and analyzing the changes reported in this sector in the last decade. The research was carried out using a selected set of 11 indicators characterizing renewable energy in individual countries.... [more]

The Internal Residual Gas and Effective Release Energy of a Spark-Ignition Engine with Various Inlet Port−Bore Ratios and Full Load Condition
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ERE, ERG, HC emission, IPD/B ratio, NOx emission
This paper presents the effect of inlet port diameter−bore ratios (IPD/B) on the effective release energy and internal exhaust residual gas of a spark-ignition engine. To investigate the exhaust residual gas in the combustion chamber, a simulation model is setup based on AVL-boost software, and to validate the simulation model an experimental model is also setup. The results of the research show that: the IPD/B ratios have a large effect on the residual gas and effective release energy. When the IPD/B ratio increases from 0.3−0.5, the residual gas increases from 0.11% to 0.14%, and the effective release energy increases from 0.33 KJ to a maximum value of 0.45 KJ, and after that decreases. The engine shows the maximum effective release energy at IPD/B ratio is 0.4. The emission of HC and CO is decreased, but the NOx is increased until a maximum value after that decreased.

Electrical Energy Flow Algorithm for Household, Street and Battery Charging in Smart Street Development
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: algorithm, home storage, prosumers (consumer + producer), smart grid, smart homes, smart street, SOC (state of charge), street storage
The world demands a smart and green future in every sector, which directly corresponds to increases in electrical energy demand one way or another. It is unfeasible to attain future energy demand with the present electrical infrastructure. That means more research and development is required. Future energy sources should be intermittent, and, in addition, the energy sector should be more inwards for distributed energy generation with demand side control. In such cases, the smartest and most autonomous system would be essential to deliver an adequate power supply with all electrical properties. A real-time monitoring and control system with a self-healing infrastructure is a forthcoming desideratum. By accepting these challenges, we have designed a smart street. The basic idea of the smart street is presented in this paper as a landing page; the paper is more focused on emphasizing information regarding the electrical energy flow algorithm for the household, street, and street battery s... An Investigation of Thermoelectric Generators Used as Energy Harvesters in a Water Consumption Meter Application
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DC/DC power converters, energy consumption, energy harvesting, energy measurement, supercapacitors, TEC, TEG, TES, water flow meter
In this study, we present the results of measuring the performance of selected Peltier cells such as thermoelectric Peltier cooler modules (TEC), thermoelectric micro-Peltier cooler modules (TES), and thermoelectric Seebeck generator modules (TEG). The achieved results are presented in the form of graphs of powering system output voltage or power efficiency functions of the load impedance. Moreover, a technical solution is also presented that consists of designing a water consumption power supply system, using a renewable energy source in the form of a Peltier cell. The developed measuring system does not require additional batteries or an external power source. The energy needed to power the system was obtained from the temperature difference between two sides of a thermoelectric cell, caused by the measured medium which was flowing in a copper water pipe. All achieved results were investigated for the temperature difference from 1 to 10 K in relation to the ambient temperature.

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: clean cooking, demand-side management, eCook, low-and middle-income countries, mini-grids, rural electrification, technical challenges
This paper lays out a methodology that could be used by mini-grid developers to assess the design readiness and future design requirement to accommodate electric cooking (eCook). While mini-grids in developing countries continue to grow in popularity, typically their designs are not yet sufficiently developed to accommodate large power appliances. Moving towards clean cooking using electricity will cause technical risks for mini-grids in terms of voltage drop, voltage unbalances and capacity shortage. In this paper, these parameters are studied on a mini-grid network modeled in OpenDSS/MATLAB as a simulation platform, where the selected mini-grid topology is hub and spoke. Two network studies are considered, the first investigates the limitations of the mini-grid in terms of the generation capacity available to supply the demand for different levels of eCook penetration, while the second focuses on the network constraints for different eCook penetrations. In general, the results show t... [more]

The Deformation Characteristics and Lateral Stress of Roadside Crushed Rocks with Different Particles in Non-Pillar Coal Mining
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: compression test, crushed rocks, deformation characteristics, lateral stress, non-pillar coal mining
Gob-side entry retaining formed by roof fracturing (GERRF) is a popular non-pillar mining method. The method uses crushed rocks in gob side to support and control the movements of the gob roof. These crushed rocks will deform under roof pressure and generate desirable lateral stress on support structures of gangue rib. In this study, the deformation behavior of crushed mudstones with different particle sizes under incremental loading was investigated with an innovative experimental device that simulated boundary conditions of the GERRF method. Influence of particle size of the crushed mudstones to the generation of lateral stress applied on support structures were concurrently observed and analyzed. Research outputs from the tests showed that: (1) The particle size exerted a significant influence on the accumulated axial deformation, period axial deformation, and lateral stress applied on support structure of crushed rocks. (2) Under the same axial stress, the larger the particle size,... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: climate action target, decarbonization, electrification, energy efficiency strategy, net zero energy building, net zero standard, net zero variation, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Buildings contribute to greenhouse gas emissions that cause environmental impacts on climate change. Net Zero Energy (NZ) buildings would reduce greenhouse gases. The current definition of NZ lacks consensus and has created uncertainties, which cause delays in the adoption of NZ. This paper proposes a Process for Clarification to Accelerate the Net Zero (PC-A-NZ) through three integrated steps: variations, strategies, and requirements. We expand on the results in published NZ literature to clarify the differences in definition and strategy. The objective of this review is to (1) distinguish current variable parameters that are slowing the acceptance of NZ, and (2) focus the discussion internationally on moving faster toward applying NZ to a larger common agreement. The publications of global NZ target assessment and energy efficient strategies will be reviewed to address the main requirements in expediting NZ’s successful progress. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy access, energy affordability, energy sustainability, mini-grids, SDG 7
Decentralised renewable energy (RE) systems such as solar PV mini-grids (MG) are considered to be a cornerstone for the strategic achievement of the UN’s energy access goals in the developing world. Many of these systems implemented however face substantial technical, financial and social sustainability challenges which are also a recurring theme in the relevant literature. MG analyses however often lack detailed technical or financial data or apply ‘silo-approaches’ as a comprehensive review of MG case study literature presented in this article reveals. Consequently, this study aims to enhance the understanding of RE MG sustainability in the developing context based on the integrated evaluation of the technical, financial and social dimensions of MG operation through empirical data from community surveys on energy use from Uganda and Zambia and two in-depth MG case studies from Zambia. By presenting detailed technical and financial data in combination with energy consumer perception,... [more]

Static Temperature Guideline for Comparative Testing of Sorption Heat Storage Systems for Building Application
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: building application, sorption thermal energy storage, space heating, static testing guideline, uniform performance evaluation
Sorption heat storage system performance heavily depends on the operating temperature. It is found that testing temperatures reported in literature vary widely. In respect to the building application for space heating, reported testing temperatures are often outside of application scope and at times even incomplete. This has led to application performance overestimation and prevents sound comparison between reports. This issue is addressed in this paper and a remedy pursued by proposing a static temperature and vapor pressure-based testing guideline for building-integrated sorption heat storage systems. By following this guideline, comparable testing results in respect to temperature gain, power and energy density will be possible, in turn providing a measure for evaluation of progress.

Coal Pricing in China: Is It a Bit Too Crude?
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: China, coal price, crude oil price, methanol price, spectral Granger causality
China is a global leader in methanol production volume, while coal is a major feedstock. The country also has the world’s largest commercial coal-to-methanol operations. Coal-based methanol is used widely within China and is a competitive substitute for gasoline. Owing to this, it is plausible that the price of coal may be linked to international crude oil prices, with methanol prices serving as the connecting channel. We add supporting evidence to a recently emerging area of literature and observe statistically significant relationships among the three prices, and, therefore, the influence from international crude oil and methanol prices on the coal price determination in China. This paper investigates the relationships among these prices for the period from January 2010 to December 2019 through spectral Granger causality analysis, alongside more traditional cointegration tests to develop a comprehensive picture of causal association between the price series in both the frequency and... Large-Eddy Simulation of Wind Turbine Flows: A New Evaluation of Actuator Disk Models
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: actuator disk models, atmospheric boundary layer, large-eddy simulation, wind turbine
Large-eddy simulation (LES) with actuator models has become the state-of-the-art numerical tool to study the complex interaction between the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) and wind turbines. In this paper, a new evaluation of actuator disk models (ADMs) for LES of wind turbine flows is presented. Several details of the implementation of such models are evaluated based on a test case studied experimentally. In contrast to other test cases used in previous similar studies, the present test case consists of a wind turbine immersed in a realistic turbulent boundary-layer flow, for which accurate data for the turbine, the flow, the thrust and the power are available. It is found that the projection of the forces generated by the turbine into the flow solver grid is crucial for rotor predictions, especially for the power, and less important for the wake flow prediction. In this context, the projection of the forces into the flow solver grid should be as accurate as possible, in order to co... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: graphene nano-platelets, heat transfer enhancement, latent heat storage (LHS), shell-and-tube heat exchanger, solidification, thermal energy storage (TES)
Technological development in latent heat storage (LHS) systems is essential for energy security and energy management for both renewable and non-renewable sources. In this article, numerical analyses on a shell-and-tube-based LHS system with coupled thermal enhancement through extended fins and nano-additives are conducted to propose optimal combinations for guaranteed higher discharging rate, enthalpy capacity and thermal distribution. Transient numerical simulations of fourteen scenarios with varied combinations are investigated in three-dimensional computational models. The shell-and-tube includes paraffin as phase change material (PCM), longitudinal, radial and wire-wound fins and graphene nano-platelets (GNP) as extended fins and nano-additives, respectively. The extended fins have demonstrated better effectiveness than nano-additives. For instance, the discharging durations for paraffin with longitudinal, radial and wire-wound fins are shortened by 88.76%, 95.13% and 96.44% as co... [more]

Implementing an Extended Kalman Filter for SoC Estimation of a Li-Ion Battery with Hysteresis: A Step-by-Step Guide
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery modeling, extended Kalman filter, hysteresis, Li-ion batteries, process noise, state of charge estimation
The growing share of renewable energies in power production and the rise of the market share of battery electric vehicles increase the demand for battery technologies. In both fields, a predictable operation requires knowledge of the internal battery state, especially its state of charge (SoC). Since a direct measurement of the SoC is not possible, Kalman filter-based estimation methods are widely used. In this work, a step-by-step guide for the implementation and tuning of an extended Kalman filter (EKF) is presented. The structured approach of this paper reduces efforts compared with empirical filter tuning and can be adapted to various battery models, systems, and cell types. This work can act as a tutorial describing all steps to get a working SoC estimator based on an extended Kalman filter.

Evaluation of PV and CSP Systems to Supply Power in the Zimbabwe Mining Sector
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery storage, concentrated solar power, electrical load, electricity supply, levelised cost of electricity, mining, photovoltaics, thermal storage
The drought that occurred in Zimbabwe in 2020 affected the country’s main hydro-power station causing the electricity supply to be less secure and reliable. This challenge resulted in load-shedding, which is not desirable to mining companies that require constant and reliable power for their operations. In that regard, a techno-economic analysis was carried out to assess the potential of integrating concentrated solar power (+thermal storage) and photovoltaics (+battery storage) to supply power at a typical mine in Zimbabwe. Two scenarios were simulated—a base case with no exports to the grid and another case where exports were allowed. The models were evaluated based on the generated renewable energy offsetting the demand from the mine, the energy exported, the grid contribution, the levelised cost of electricity and the net present value. The results show that the addition of a battery storage system to PV improves the percentage of the load offset by the renewable system and the gen... [more]

Ocean renewable wave power is one of the more encouraging inexhaustible energy sources, with the potential to be exploited for nearly 337 GW worldwide. However, compared with other sources of renewables, wave energy technologies have not been fully developed, and the produced energy price is not as competitive as that of wind or solar renewable technologies. In order to commercialise ocean wave technologies, a wide range of optimisation methodologies have been proposed in the last decade. However, evaluations and comparisons of the performance of state-of-the-art bio-inspired optimisation algorithms have not been contemplated for wave energy converters’ optimisation. In this work, we conduct a comprehensive investigation, evaluation and comparison of the optimisation of the geometry, tether angles and power take-off (PTO) settings of a wave energy converter (WEC) using bio-inspired swarm-evolutionary optimisation algorithms based on a sample wave regime at a site in the Mediterranean S... Modeling Electric Vehicle Charging Demand with the Effect of Increasing EVSEs: A Discrete Event Simulation-Based Model
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery charging, discrete event simulation, electric vehicles, electricity demand, Monte Carlo method
Electric vehicle (EV) use is growing at a steady rate globally. Many countries are planning to ban internal combustion engines by 2030. One of the key issues needed to be addressed before the full-scale deployment of EVs is ensuring energy security. Various studies have developed models to simulate and study hourly electricity demand from EV charging. In this study, we present an improved model based on discrete event simulation, which allows for modeling characteristics of individual EV users, including the availability of electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) outside homes and the charging threshold of each EV user. The model is illustrated by simulating 1000 random electric vehicles generated using data from an actual survey. The results agree with previous studies that daily charging demands do not significantly vary. However, the results show a significant shift in charging schedule during weekends. Moreover, the simulation demonstrated that the charging peak demand can be redu... [more]

A Comprehensive Review on the Recent Development of Ammonia as a Renewable Energy Carrier
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ammonia, hydrogen storage, renewable energy storage
Global energy sources are being transformed from hydrocarbon-based energy sources to renewable and carbon-free energy sources such as wind, solar and hydrogen. The biggest challenge with hydrogen as a renewable energy carrier is the storage and delivery system’s complexity. Therefore, other media such as ammonia for indirect storage are now being considered. Research has shown that at reasonable pressures, ammonia is easily contained as a liquid. In this form, energy density is approximately half of that of gasoline and ten times more than batteries. Ammonia can provide effective storage of renewable energy through its existing storage and distribution network. In this article, we aimed to analyse the previous studies and the current research on the preparation of ammonia as a next-generation renewable energy carrier. The study focuses on technical advances emerging in ammonia synthesis technologies, such as photocatalysis, electrocatalysis and plasmacatalysis. Ammonia is now also stro... [more]

Multipulse Ballistic Injection: A Novel Method for Improving Low Temperature Combustion with Early Injection Timings
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: low temperature combustion, mixture homogeneity, multipulse ballistic injection, wall wetting
Nowadays, increasingly stricter regulations on emission reduction are inducing rapid developments in combustion science. Low-temperature combustion (LTC) is an advanced combustion technology that increases an engine’s thermal efficiency and even provides low emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM). The technology often uses early direct injections to achieve sufficient mixture homogeneity. This leads to increasing wall wetting and lower combustion efficiency. This paper introduces the Multipulse ballistic injection (MBI) method to improve combustion with early injection timings. The research was carried out in a four-cylinder medium-duty diesel engine with high-pressure exhaust gas recirculation (HP-EGR). The investigation was divided into two experiments. In the first experiment, MBI was examined without EGR, and in the second, EGR was applied to study its effects. It was found that the MBI strategy decreased wall wetting and increased homogeneity and the indica... [more]

Effect of Integrating Metal Wire Mesh with Spray Injection for Liquid Piston Gas Compression
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Compressed Air Energy Storage, heat transfer enhancement, isothermal gas compression, liquid piston, spray cooling
Heat transfer enhancement techniques used in liquid piston gas compression can contribute to improving the efficiency of compressed air energy storage systems by achieving a near-isothermal compression process. This work examines the effectiveness of a simultaneous use of two proven heat transfer enhancement techniques, metal wire mesh inserts and spray injection methods, in liquid piston gas compression. By varying the dimension of the inserts and the pressure of the spray, a comparative study was performed to explore the plausibility of additional improvement. The addition of an insert can help abating the temperature rise when the insert does not take much space or when the spray flowrate is low. At higher pressure, however, the addition of spacious inserts can lead to less efficient temperature abatement. This is because inserts can distract the free-fall of droplets and hinder their speed. In order to analytically account for the compromised cooling effects of droplets, Reynolds n... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: clearance, flow function, leakage, rib, stepped labyrinth seal, turbine
A new type of stepped seal with a ribbed casing is proposed to efficiently reduce the leakage at the tips of turbine blades. The leakage characteristics of two different types of labyrinth seals (conventional seal vs. ribbed seal) were compared and analyzed through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in a wide operating range of pressure ratios and clearances. The analysis showed that the ribbed seal has superior leakage performance to the conventional seal at all clearance sizes. With the same clearance size (S/H = 1.0), the flow function of the ribbed seal was approximately 21.5−42.6% less than that of the conventional seal. Also, different trends of variation in the flow function according to the increase of the clearance were found between the conventional and ribbed seals. The leakage flow inside the labyrinth seal was analyzed to explain the cause of this difference in tendency, and it was confirmed that the added ribs cause collision between the leakage flow and the tooth wall, e... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: clustering validation, demand response, electrical smart meters, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, time series clustering, time series representation
The variability in generation introduced in the electrical system by an increasing share of renewable technologies must be addressed by balancing mechanisms, demand response being a prominent one. In parallel, the massive introduction of smart meters allows for the use of high frequency energy use time series data to segment electricity customers according to their demand response potential. This paper proposes a smart meter time series clustering methodology based on a two-stage k-medoids clustering of normalized load-shape time series organized around the day divided into 48 time points. Time complexity is drastically reduced by first applying the k-medoids on each customer separately, and second on the total set of customer representatives. Further time complexity reduction is achieved using time series representation with low computational needs.
