April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electricity production, external cost, life cycle cost, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Economic cost is decisive for the development of different power generation. Life cycle cost (LCC) is a useful tool in calculating the cost at all life stages of electricity generation. This study improves the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) model as the LCC calculation methods from three aspects, including considering the quantification of external cost, expanding the compositions of internal cost, and discounting power generation. The improved LCOE model is applied to three representative kinds of power generation, namely, coal-fired, biomass, and wind power in China, in the base year 2015. The external cost is quantified based on the ReCiPe model and an economic value conversion factor system. Results show that the internal cost of coal-fired, biomass, and wind power are 0.049, 0.098, and 0.081 USD/kWh, separately. With the quantification of external cost, the LCCs of the three are 0.275, 0.249, and 0.081 USD/kWh, respectively. Sensitivity analysis is conducted on the discount... [more]
A Model to Improve the Effectiveness and Energy Consumption to Address the Routing Problem for Cognitive Radio Ad Hoc Networks by Utilizing an Optimized Cuckoo Search Algorithm
Ramahlapane Lerato Moila, Mthulisi Velempini
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cognitive radio ad hoc network, cuckoo search algorithm, network simulator
A cognitive radio ad hoc network (CRAHN) is a mobile network that can communicate without any form of centralized infrastructure. The nodes can learn about the environment and make routing decisions. Furthermore, distributed computing, spectrum mobility, and the Internet of Things have created large data sets, which require more spectrum for data transmission. Unfortunately, the spectrum is a scarce resource that underutilized by licensed users, while unlicensed users are overcrowding the free spectrum. The CRAHNs technology has emerged as a promising solution to the underutilization of the spectrum. The focus of this study is to improve the effectiveness and energy consumption of routing in order to address the routing problem of CRAHNs through the implementation of the optimized cuckoo search algorithm. In CRAHNs, the node and spectrum mobility cause some frequent link breakages within the network, which degrades the performance of the routing protocols. This requires a routing solut... [more]

Keywords: CO2 synergistic huff and puff, complex fault-block reservoir, EOR mechanism, sensitivity analysis, synergistic mode adaptability
With the gradual declining of oil increment performance of CO2 huff-and-puff wells, the overall oil exchange rate shows a downward tendency. In this regard, CO2 synergistic huff-and-puff technologies have been proposed to maintain the excellent effect and extend the technical life of such wells. However, there is no specific research on the mechanism and synergistic mode of CO2 huff and puff in horizontal wells. This study aims to establish the synergistic mode and determine the adaptability and acting mechanism of CO2 synergistic huff and puff. Three synergistic huff-and-puff modes are proposed based on the peculiarity of the fault-block reservoir’s small oil-bearing area and broken geological structure. We establish three typical CO2 synergistic huff-and-puff models and analyze the influence of different geological and development factors on the huff-and-puff performance with numerical simulation. Each factor’s sensitivity is clarified, and the enhanced oil recovery (EOR) mechanism o... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: anisotropic mechanical behavior, failure criterion, FE simulation, jellyroll, prismatic lithium-ion battery
Lithium-ion batteries have been widely used in electric vehicles but may cause severe internal short circuit during extreme intrusion-type accidents. A well-defined homogenized model of battery or jellyroll is necessary for safety assessment and design on large-scale structure level. In our previous study, the jellyroll of prismatic lithium-ion battery cell shows anisotropic mechanical behavior and failure tolerance. For homogenized characterization of jellyroll, in the present paper, the user subroutine of a constitutive model taking anisotropy into account is implanted into Abaqus finite element analysis software, which is capable of capturing the force versus displacement responses along different loading directions before jellyroll failure. To extend the capability of the homogenized model, five single-parameter failure criteria and two combined failure criteria are examined in predicting the failure onsets in jellyroll along different directions. The result proves the combined fai... [more]

Does Investor Sentiment Affect Clean Energy Stock? Evidence from TVP-VAR-Based Connectedness Approach
Tiantian Liu, Shigeyuki Hamori
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: clean energy, dynamic connectedness, investor sentiment, TVP-VAR
We investigated the connectedness of the returns and volatility of clean energy stock, technology stock, crude oil, natural gas, and investor sentiment based on the time-varying parameter vector autoregressive (TVP-VAR) connectedness approach. The empirical results indicate that the average total connectedness is higher in the volatility system than in the return system. The investor sentiment has a weak impact on clean energy stock. Our results show that the dynamic total connectedness across assets in the system varies with time. Furthermore, the dynamic total connectedness increases significantly during financial turmoil. Dynamic total volatility connectedness is more sensitive to financial turmoil. By comparing the connectedness estimated by the TVP-VAR model with the rolling-window VAR model, we find the dynamic total return connectedness of the TVP-VAR model is similar to the estimated results of a 200 day rolling-window VAR model.

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: alkaline electrolysis, concentrated solar power, levelized cost of hydrogen, photovoltaics, solar hydrogen
Global trade of green hydrogen will probably become a vital factor in reaching climate neutrality. The sunbelt of the Earth has a great potential for large-scale hydrogen production. One promising pathway to solar hydrogen is to use economically priced electricity from photovoltaics (PV) for electrochemical water splitting. However, storing electricity with batteries is still expensive and without storage only a small operating capacity of electrolyser systems can be reached. Combining PV with concentrated solar power (CSP) and thermal energy storage (TES) seems a good pathway to reach more electrolyser full load hours and thereby lower levelized costs of hydrogen (LCOH). This work introduces an energy system model for finding cost-optimal designs of such PV/CSP hybrid hydrogen production plants based on a global optimization algorithm. The model includes an operational strategy which improves the interplay between PV and CSP part, allowing also to store PV surplus electricity as heat.... [more]

McKenzie Thomas, Kimberly L. Jensen, Dayton M. Lambert, Burton C. English, Christopher D. Clark, Forbes R. Walker
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biochar, Biofuels, consumer preferences, feedstock, potting mix
Biochar is a co-product of advanced biofuels production from feedstocks including food, agricultural, wood wastes, or dedicated energy crops. Markets for soil amendments using biochar are emerging, but little is known about consumer preferences and willingness to pay (WTP) for these products or the depth of the products’ market potential for this product. This research provides WTP estimates for potting mix amended with 25% biochar, conditioned on consumer demographics and attitudes about product information labeling. Data were collected with an online survey of 577 Tennessee home gardeners. WTP was elicited through a referendum contingent valuation. Consumer WTP for an 8.81 L bag of 25% biochar potting mix is $8.52; a premium of $3.53 over conventional potting mix. Demographics and attitudes toward biofuels and the environment influence WTP. Biochar amounts demanded are projected for the study area’s potential market. Optimal prices, profits, and market shares are estimated across dif... [more]
Dynamics of Electricity Production against the Backdrop of Climate Change: A Case Study of Hydropower Plants in Poland
Katarzyna Kubiak-Wójcicka, Leszek Szczęch
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hydroelectricity, Poland, renewable energy sources (RES), small hydropower plant (SHP)
Renewable energy sources (RES) play an important role in the European Union’s energy sector as a result of the energy policy framework adopted. Its share in the final energy consumption varies depending on the country and the adopted energy policy. The article presents the structure of electricity production from renewable energy sources in Poland in the years 2002−2019. It was found that the share of energy production from hydroelectric power plants in Poland in relation to the amount of energy produced from renewable energy sources in the analyzed years has strongly decreased. The reason for this state was an increase in the production of energy coming from wind and biomass energy combined with an increase in subsidies for these energy producers. Additionally, unstable hydrological conditions, mainly low river flows, may be the reason for the low share of energy produced in power plants. As a case study, data for five small hydropower plants (SHP) located on the Gwda river (north-wes... [more]

Keywords: improved cuckoo search algorithm, least squares support vector machine, modified set pair analysis, photovoltaic industry, sustainability evaluation, the Belt and Road
Scientific and timely sustainability evaluation of the photovoltaic industry along the Belt and Road is of great significance. In this paper, a novel hybrid evaluation model is proposed for accurate and real-time assessment that integrates modified set pair analysis with least squares support vector machine that combines improved cuckoo search algorithm. First, the indicator system is set from five principles, namely economy, politics, society, ecological environment and resources. Then, the traditional approach is established through modifying set pair analysis on the basis of variable fuzzy set coupling evaluation theory. A modern intelligent assessment model is designed that integrates improved cuckoo search algorithm and least squares support vector machine where the concept of random weight is introduced in improved cuckoo search algorithm. In the case analysis, the relative errors calculated by the proposed model all fluctuate in the range of [−3%, 3%], indicating that it has the... [more]

Piotr Żuk, Paweł Żuk
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: climate scepticism, entrepreneurs, European green deal, ideology, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
This article analyses the business community in Poland and their views on climate change and the objectives of the European Green Deal (EGD). The authors focus on the analysis of the attitude of entrepreneurs towards the cultural and ideological stereotypes promoted by climate denialists. This article shows that the ideological factor may play a certain role in shaping the attitudes of entrepreneurs towards energy transition. The research was carried out on a sample of 400 entrepreneurs. The research results indicate that the ideological factor is of particular importance among entrepreneurs who are concerned about the costs of energy transition and the expenditure related to the implementation of the EGD for economic reasons. According to the authors, the stereotypes promoted by climate sceptics may find fertile ground, particularly when accompanied by fears of additional financial costs. Attitudes towards the goals of energy transition among entrepreneurs usually differ depending on... [more]

Keywords: actuator, artificial muscle, carbon dioxide free, CNT, dielectric elastomer, generation, high efficiency, high power, large deformation, rare earths free
Power generation using dielectric elastomer (DE) artificial muscle is attracting attention because of its light weight, low cost, and high-efficiency. Since this method is a system that produces electricity without emitting carbon dioxide nor using rare earths, it would contribute to the goal of environmental sustainability. In this paper, the background of DEs, the associated high efficiency wave energy generation (WEG) systems that we developed using DEs, as well as the latest development of its material are summarized. By covering both the challenges and achievements, this paper discusses the opportunities to build the foundation of an energy recycling society through the usage of these WEGs. To make these possibilities commercially successful, the advantages of DEs need to be integrated with traditional technologies. To achieve this, the method of using DEs alone and a system used in combination with an oscillating water column were also considered. Finally, the current status and... [more]
Analysis of Driving Dynamics Considering Driving Resistances in On-Road Driving
Jingeun Song, Junepyo Cha
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: driving dynamics, driving resistance, on-road driving test, relative positive acceleration, vehicle speed per positive acceleration
Internal combustion engine emissions are a serious worldwide problem. To combat this, emission regulations have become stricter with the goal of reducing the proportion of transportation emissions in global air pollution. In addition, the European Commission passed the real driving emissions−light-duty vehicles (RDE-LDV) regulation that evaluates vehicle emissions by driving on real roads. The RDE test is significantly dependent on driving conditions such as traffic or drivers. Thus, the RDE regulation has the means to evaluate driving dynamics such as the vehicle speed per acceleration (v·apos) and the relative positive acceleration (RPA) to determine whether the driving during these tests is normal or abnormal. However, this is not an appropriate way to assess the driving dynamics because the v⋅apos and the RPA do not represent engine load, which is directly related to exhaust emissions. Therefore, in the present study, new driving dynamic variables are proposed. These variables use... [more]

Keywords: Altman model, CHAID, Classification Trees, CRT algorithm, decision making, indicators, k-Nearest Neighbors method, manufacturing companies, renewable energy sources
In the interests of the environment, many countries set limits on the use of non-renewable energy sources and promote renewable energy sources through policy and legislation. Consequently, the demand for components for renewable energy systems exhibits an upward trend. For this reason, managers, investors, and banks are interested in knowing whether investing in a business associated with the semiconductor and related device manufacturing sector, especially the photovoltaic (PV) systems manufacturers, is worthy of a penny. Using a sample for the period of 2015−2018, we apply a new approach to panel data, extending existing research using Classification Trees with the k-Nearest Neighbor and Altman model. Our aim is to analyze the financial conditions of enterprises to identify key indicators that distinguish companies producing PV system components (labeled “green, G”) from companies that do not manufacture PV components (“red, R”). Our results show that green companies can be distingui... [more]

Keywords: CHP, design, economic analysis, gas turbines, heat recovery, ORC, part-load, supercritical CO2
Gas turbine power plants are widely employed with constrained efficiency in the industrial field, where they often work under variable load conditions caused by variations in demand, leading to fluctuating exhaust gas temperatures. Suitable energy harvesting solutions can be identified in bottoming cycles, such as the conventional Organic Rankine Cycles (ORC) or the innovative supercritical CO2 (s-CO2) systems. This paper presents a detailed comparison of the potential of ORC and s-CO2 as bottomers of industrial gas turbines in a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) configuration. Different gas turbine models, covering the typical industrial size range, are taken into account and both full- and part-load operations are considered. Performance, component dimensions, and operating costs are investigated, considering ORC and s-CO2 systems specifics in line with the current state-of-the-art products, experience, and technological limits. Results of the study show that the s-CO2 could be more appr... [more]

Keywords: bulk density, coke making, coke quality, CRI, CSR, hard coking coal, semi-soft coal, stamp charging, structure
Coke is an integral component of the blast furnace charge; therefore, it plays an important role in the integrated steelmaking process. Achieving the required coke quality parameters by producers requires the use of a high proportion of the highest quality coking coals (hard coking coals) in the coking blends, which significantly increases the unit production costs. Approximately 75% of these costs are constituted by the cost of the coal blend’s preparation. There is a deficit in the best quality coking coals on the world market and their supply are characterized by large fluctuations in quality parameters. Therefore, from the point of view of the economics of coke production, it is advantageous to produce high-quality coke from a coke blend with the highest possible content of cheaper coals. The paper presents the results of the influence of coal charge bulk density and semi-soft coking coal content in the coking blend on the textural and structural parameters of coke, which determine... April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: compact explicit scheme, flow over the plate, mixed convection, nonlinear PDEs, thermal radiation
The main contribution of this article is to propose a compact explicit scheme for solving time-dependent partial differential equations (PDEs). The proposed explicit scheme has an advantage over the corresponding implicit compact scheme to find solutions of nonlinear and linear convection−diffusion type equations because the implicit existing compact scheme fails to obtain the solution. In addition, the present scheme provides fourth-order accuracy in space and second-order accuracy in time, and is constructed on three grid points and three time levels. It is a compact multistep scheme and conditionally stable, while the existing multistep scheme developed on three time levels is unconditionally unstable for parabolic and considered a type of equations. The mathematical model of the heat transfer in a mixed convective radiative fluid flow over a flat plate is also given. The convergence conditions of dimensionless forms of these equations are given, and also the proposed scheme solves... [more]

Keywords: battery energy storage system, demand response, integrated community energy system, smart grid, smart island energy system
Implementation of alternative energy supply solutions requires the broad involvement of local communities. Hence, smart energy solutions are primarily investigated on a local scale, resulting in integrated community energy systems (ICESs). Within this framework, the distributed generation can be optimally utilised, matching it with the local load via storage and demand response techniques. In this study, the boat demand flexibility in the Ballen marina on Samsø—a medium-sized Danish island—is analysed for improving the local grid operation. For this purpose, suitable electricity tariffs for the marina and sailors are developed based on the conducted demand analysis. The optimal scheduling of boats and battery energy storage system (BESS) is proposed, utilising mixed-integer linear programming. The marina’s grid-flexible operation is studied for three representative weeks—peak tourist season, late summer, and late autumn period—with the combinations of high/low load and photovoltaic (PV... Keywords: non-hybrid configuration, residential, small-scale turbines, techno-financial evaluation, wind energy
This study provides a techno-financial evaluation of two sites in Malaysia: Kudat, located on the coast of the northernmost part of Sabah, the state of East Malaysia with promising wind potential, and Putrajaya in the Klang Valley region with moderate wind potential at high elevations similar to the dominant cities in Malaysia. Three small-scale wind turbines were evaluated, taking into account a nominal electrical power generation below 100 kW. The research is focused on 220 residential households. The software used to perform the evaluation was Hybrid Optimization of Multiple Energy Resources (HOMER). The research novelty is the examination of the non-hybrid small-scale turbines at high elevations for regions with low wind speed, such as Malaysia. Regardless of the wind farms’ financial profit, this study used the net present cost (NPC) analysis in all cases. This research demonstrates the feasibility of small-scale wind turbines mounted at high elevations for generating sufficient e... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: descending modal transition (DMT), detonation wave tracking, rotating detonation rocket engine (RDRE), wave interaction, Wolanski wave stability criterion
Rotating detonation rocket engines (RDREs) exhibit various unsteady phenomena, including modal transitions, that significantly affect their operation, performance and stability. The dynamics of the detonation waves are studied during a descending modal transition (DMT) where four co-rotating detonations waves decrease to three in a gaseous methane-oxygen RDRE. Detonation wave tracking is applied to capture, visualize and analyze unsteady, 3D detonation wave dynamics data within the combustion chamber of the RDRE. The mechanism of a descending modal transition is the failure of a detonation wave in the RDRE, and in this study, the failing wave is identified along with its failure time. The regions upstream of each relative detonation show the mixture and flow-field parameters that drive detonation failure. Additionally, it is shown that descending modal transitions encompass multiple phases of detonation decay and recovery with respect to RDREs. The results show high upstream pressure,... [more]

Flow Configurations of Membraneless Microfluidic Fuel Cells: A Review
Muhammad Tanveer, Kwang-Yong Kim
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: co-laminar flow, counter flow, lateral flow, mass-transport losses, membraneless microfluidic fuel cell, orthogonal flow, radial flow
Membraneless microfluidic fuel cells (MMFCs) are being studied extensively as an alternative to batteries and conventional membrane fuel cells because of their simple functioning and lower manufacturing cost. MMFCs use the laminar flow of reactant species (fuel and oxidant) to eliminate the electrolyte membrane, which has conventionally been used to isolate anodic and cathodic half-cell reactions. This review article summarizes the MMFCs with six major categories of flow configurations that have been reported from 2002 to 2020. The discussion highlights the critical factors that affect and limit the performance of MMFCs. Since MMFCs are diffusion-limited, most of this review focuses on how different flow configurations act to reduce or modify diffusive mixing and depletion zones to enhance the power density output. Research opportunities are also pointed out, and the challenges in MMFCs are suggested to improve cell performance and make them practical in the near future.

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aeroengine thrust-to-weight ratio, blade-end slot, corner separation, full-span slot, high-turning compressor stator cascade, low blade solidity, pressure diffusing capacity
In order to comprehensively control the corner separation and the blade trailing edge (TE) separation in a high-turning compressor stator cascade, this research proposes a new combined slotted configuration consisting of one full-span slot and two blade-end slots. Taking into account the effect of the blade solidity, the performance of the original cascade and the combined slotted cascade was calculated and evaluated in a wide incidence angle range at two blade solidities. The results indicated that the blade loading and the corner separation range of the original cascade becomes larger as the blade solidity decreases from 1.66 to 1.36, which leads to higher total pressure loss and lower pressure diffusing capacity under positive incidence angles. The low-momentum fluid in the boundary layer can be significantly re-energized by the high-momentum blade-end and full-span slots jets, hence the combined slotted configuration can eliminate the blade TE separation and reduce the corner separ...
