Comparative Analysis of Degradation Assessment of Battery Energy Storage Systems in PV Smoothing Application
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery degradation, PV fluctuations, ramp-rate control
Photovoltaic (PV) generation depends on the availability of solar resources, being directly influenced by the variation in irradiance due to the presence of clouds over the PV panels, causing a variation in the power output. The use of battery energy storage systems integrated with the PV showed to be a technically feasible solution to mitigate these power output fluctuations within the maximum ramp limit. Most articles reported in the literature on smoothing PV power output, by coupling with battery degradation as performance indicators of the control strategy, used the event-oriented model that considers only the number of cycles and depth of discharge. This paper presents on the comparative analysis of two approaches to battery degradation models, an event-oriented model based on the Rainflow counting and a semiempirical model, and applies to photovoltaic power smoothing by using a wide range of restrictions and installed PV plant capacities. The semi-empirical degradation model rev... [more]

Dynamic Loads and Response of a Spar Buoy Wind Turbine with Pitch-Controlled Rotating Blades: An Experimental Study
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: floating wind turbine, offshore wind, pitch control, rotating blades, spar buoy
New large-scale laboratory data are presented on a physical model of a spar buoy wind turbine with angular motion of control surfaces implemented (pitch control). The peculiarity of this type of rotating blade represents an essential aspect when studying floating offshore wind structures. Experiments were designed specifically to compare different operational environmental conditions in terms of wave steepness and wind speed. Results discussed here were derived from an analysis of only a part of the whole dataset. Consistent with recent small-scale experiments, data clearly show that the waves contributed to most of the model motions and mooring loads. A significant nonlinear behavior for sway, roll and yaw has been detected, whereas an increase in the wave period makes the wind speed less influential for surge, heave and pitch. In general, as the steepness increases, the oscillations decrease. However, higher wind speed does not mean greater platform motions. Data also indicate a sign... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: benzotriindole, bulk-heterojunction organic solar cells, carbazole, donor-acceptor small molecules, single-component organic solar cells, star-shaped molecules, triphenylamine
Star-shaped donor-acceptor molecules are full of promise for organic photovoltaics and electronics. However, the effect of the branching core on physicochemical properties, charge transport and photovoltaic performance of such donor-acceptor materials in single-component (SC) and bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells has not been thoroughly addressed. This work shows the comprehensive investigation of six star-shaped donor-acceptor molecules with terminal hexyldicyanovinyl blocks linked through 2,2′-bithiophene π-conjugated bridge to different electron-donating cores such as the pristine and fused triphenylamine, tris(2-methoxyphenyl)amine, carbazole- and benzotriindole-based units. Variation of the branching core strongly impacts on such important properties as the solubility, highest occupied molecular orbital energy, optical absorption, phase behavior, molecular packing and also on the charge-carrier mobility. The performance of SC or BHJ organic solar cells are comprehensiv... [more]

Flow Characteristics of Preliminary Shutdown and Startup Sequences for a Model Counter-Rotating Pump-Turbine
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: counter-rotating, hydropower, low-head, OpenFOAM, pump-turbine, pumped hydro storage, shutdown, startup, transient sequences
Pumped Hydropower Storage (PHS) is the maturest and most economically viable technology for storing energy and regulating the electrical grid on a large scale. Due to the growing amount of intermittent renewable energy sources, the necessity of maintaining grid stability increases. Most PHS facilities today require a geographical topology with large differences in elevation. The ALPHEUS H2020 EU project has the aim to develop PHS for flat geographical topologies. The present study was concerned with the initial design of a low-head model counter-rotating pump-turbine. The machine was numerically analysed during the shutdown and startup sequences using computational fluid dynamics. The rotational speed of the individual runners was decreased from the design point to stand-still and increased back to the design point, in both pump and turbine modes. As the rotational speeds were close to zero, the flow field was chaotic, and a large flow separation occurred by the blades of the runners.... [more]

Electrical Load Prediction Using Interval Type-2 Atanassov Intuitionist Fuzzy System: Gravitational Search Algorithm Tuning Approach
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electrical load prediction, gravitational search algorithm, interval type-2 Atanassov intuitionist fuzzy logic system, ridge least square algorithm
Establishing accurate electrical load prediction is vital for pricing and power system management. However, the unpredictable behavior of private and industrial users results in uncertainty in these power systems. Furthermore, the utilization of renewable energy sources, which are often variable in their production rates, also increases the complexity making predictions even more difficult. In this paper an interval type-2 intuitionist fuzzy logic system whose parameters are trained in a hybrid fashion using gravitational search algorithms with the ridge least square algorithm is presented for short-term prediction of electrical loading. Simulation results are provided to compare the performance of the proposed approach with that of state-of-the-art electrical load prediction algorithms for Poland, and five regions of Australia. The simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed approach over seven different current state-of-the-art prediction algorithms in the... [more]

MIL-160 as an Adsorbent for Atmospheric Water Harvesting
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adsorptive water harvesting from the atmosphere, metal–organic frameworks, MIL-160, specific energy consumption, specific water productivity, water vapor adsorption
Nowadays, the rapidly growing population, climate change, and environment pollution put heavy pressure on fresh water resources. The atmosphere is the immense worldwide and available water source. The Adsorptive Water Harvesting from the Atmosphere (AWHA) method is considered a promising alternative to desalination technologies for remote arid regions. The development of novel adsorbents with advanced water-adsorption properties is a prerequisite for practical realization of this method. Metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) are a novel class of porous crystalline solids that bring a great potential for AWHA due to their extremely high specific surface area, porosity, and tailored adsorption properties. This work addresses MIL-160 as a water adsorbent for AWHA. The water-adsorption equilibrium of MIL-160 was studied by volumetric method, the isosteric heat of adsorption was calculated, and finally, the potential of MIL-160 for AWHA was evaluated for climatic conditions of the deserts of Saud... Fatigue Analysis Design Approach, Manufacturing and Implementation of a 500 kW Wind Turbine Main Load Frame
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bedplate, fatigue, finite element, Goodman, main load frame, wind energy, wind turbine
The main load frame of a wind turbine is the primary mount for all nacelle equipment and is used as the principal load transmitter. This frame should have a reliable fatigue safety rating because it is a load-bearing component. In this work, the fatigue life design, manufacturing and implementation process for the main load frame of a 500 kW wind turbine are studied. The weight of the main load frame and static safety factors are preserved while the cyclic life of the bedplate is kept infinite. Modified Goodman theory is applied to achieve an effective fatigue design using a commercial finite element software package. Analytical calculations are carried out to obtain the safety factors of the bedplate and dynamic strength of the materials. A finite element approach is employed to perform stress analysis. Stress oscillations are established for both welded and cast parts of the hybrid bedplate, and the maximum and minimum stress values are established. Fatigue safety factors are calcula... [more]

CO2 Capture from Flue Gas of a Coal-Fired Power Plant Using Three-Bed PSA Process
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: breakthrough curve, Carbon Capture, flue gas, pressure swing adsorption, zeolite 13X
The pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process was used to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from the flue gas of a coal-fired power plant to reduce CO2 emissions. Herein, CO2 was captured from flue gas using the PSA process for at least 85 vol% CO2 purity and with the other exit stream from the process of more than 90 vol% N2 purity. The extended Langmuir−Freundlich isotherm was used for calculating the equilibrium adsorption capacity, and the linear driving force model was used to describe the gas adsorption kinetics. We compared the results of breakthrough curves obtained through experiments and simulations to verify the accuracy of the mass transfer coefficient. The flue gas obtained after desulphurization and water removal (13.5 vol% CO2 and 86.5 vol% N2) from a subcritical 1-kW coal-fired power plant served as the feed for the designed three-bed, nine-step PSA process. To determine optimal operating conditions for the process, the central composite design (CCD) was used. After CCD analys... [more]

Experimental Studies of Dust Suction Irregularity from Multi-Cyclone Dust Collector of Two-Stage Air Filter
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air filter, air filtration efficiency and accuracy, dust suction, dust suction irregularity, engine, multicyclone
The necessity of two-stage (multi-cyclone-baffle) inlet air filters used for motor vehicle engines operating under dusty conditions was demonstrated. The advantages of a set of several dozen cyclones (multi-cyclone) used for filtering inlet air in the engines were shown. The problem of dust accumulation separated by the cyclones in the multi-cyclone dust collector and the necessity of its removal on a current basis were analyzed. Methods of removing dust from the dust collector by means of the QS suction flow were described. It was demonstrated that the most rational method of forcing the suction flow is the use of the suction flow released from the engine. The study results are presented in this paper and show that the removal (by suction) of the accumulated dust from the dust collector additionally causes a noticeable increase in cyclone filtration efficiency. It was shown that the effective suction flow must not exceed 10−15% of the outlet flow value from the cyclone. It was evidenc... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery electric vehicles, charging strategies, load management, LSTM, Machine Learning, personalized standard load profiles, time-series prediction
Load-forecasting problems have already been widely addressed with different approaches, granularities and objectives. Recent studies focused not only on deep learning methods but also on forecasting loads on single building level. This study aims to research problems and possibilities arising by using different load-forecasting techniques to manage loads. For that behavior of two neural networks, Long Short-Term Memory and Feed-Forward Neural Network as well as two statistical methods, standardized load profiles and personalized standardized load profiles are analyzed and assessed by using a sliding-window forecast approach. The results show that personalized standardized load profiles (MAE: 3.99) can perform similar to deep learning methods (for example, LSTM MAE: 4.47). However, because of the simplistic approach, load profiles are not able to adapt to new patterns. As a case study for evaluating the support of load-forecasting for applications in energy management systems, the integ... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fan-shaped hole, film cooling, gas turbine, shape optimization
In this study, the effect of mainstream velocity on the optimization of a fan-shaped hole on a flat plate was experimentally investigated. The experiment was conducted by changing the forward expansion angle (βfwd), lateral expansion angle (βlat), and metering length ratio (Lm/D) of the film-cooling hole. A total of 13 cases extracted using the Box−Behnken method were considered to examine the effect of the shape parameters of the film-cooling hole under a 90 m/s mainstream velocity condition, and the results were compared with the results derived under a mainstream velocity of 20 m/s. One density ratio (DR = 2.0) and a blowing ratio (M) ranging from 1.0 to 2.5 were considered, and the pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) technique was applied for the film-cooling effectiveness (FCE). As a result of the experiment, the optimized hole showed a 49.3% improvement in the overall averaged FCE compared to the reference hole with DR = 2.0 and M = 2.0. April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: blockchain, distributed ledger technology, energy communities, energy trading, peer-to-peer, transactive energy
Peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading is emerging as a new mechanism for settling the exchange of energy between renewable energy generators and consumers. P2P provides a mechanism for local balancing when it is facilitated through distributed ledgers (‘blockchains’). Energy communities across Europe have uncovered the potential of this technology and are currently running pilots to test its applicability in P2P energy trading. The aim of this paper is to assess, using legal literature and legislation, whether the legal forms available to energy communities in the United Kingdom (UK) can help resolve some of the uncertainties around the individual use of blockchain for P2P energy trading. This includes the legal recognition of ‘prosumers’, the protection of their personal data, as well as the validity of ‘smart contracts’ programmed to trade energy on the blockchain network. The analysis has shown that legal entities, such as Limited Liability Partnerships and Co-operative Societies, can p... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dynamic panel model, economic growth, energy consumption, European countries
The aim of the article is to empirically verify the relationship between energy consumption and economic growth. The time scope of this study covers the period of 2008−2019. The scope of analyzed subjects covers 34 European countries, 27 of which are currently members of the European Union. European countries consume large amounts of energy, so it is worth investigating the effect of reducing energy consumption on the process of economic growth. For this purpose, dynamic panel models were used. The research methods included the use of dynamic panel models, taking into account the Arellano and Bond and Blundell and Bond estimators. The results made it possible to identify the relationship between energy consumption and economic growth. It was found that, in the short term, increases in production will result in a statistically significant increase in energy consumption. Importantly, in the long term, this impact is also statistically significant and positive. On the other hand, taking i... [more]

Laminar Burning Velocity and Ignition Delay Time of Oxygenated Biofuel
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biofuel, kinetic models, oxygenated molecules, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The need for lowering the environmental impacts has incentivized the investigation of biomass and biofuels as possible alternative sources for energy supply. Among the others, oxygenated bio-derived molecules such as alcohols, esters, acids, aldehydes, and furans are attractive substances as chemical feedstock and for sustainable energy production. Indeed, the presence of oxygen atoms limits the production of aromatic compounds, improves combustion efficiency (thus heat production) and alleviates the formation of carbon soot. On the other hand, the variability of their composition has represented one of the major challenges for the complete characterization of combustion behaviour. This work gives an overview of the current understanding of the detailed chemical mechanisms, as well as experimental investigations characterizing the combustion process of these species, with an emphasis on the laminar burning velocity and the ignition delay time. Analysis of Radial Inflow Turbine Losses Operating with Supercritical Carbon Dioxide
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: radial inflow turbine, supercritical carbon dioxide, turbine loss models, turbomachinery loss
The losses of supercritical CO2 radial turbines with design power scales of about 1 MW were investigated by using computational fluid dynamic simulations. The simulation results were compared with loss predictions from enthalpy loss correlations. The aim of the study was to investigate how the expansion losses are divided between the stator and rotor as well as to compare the loss predictions obtained with the different methods for turbine designs with varying specific speeds. It was observed that a reasonably good agreement between the 1D loss correlations and computational fluid dynamics results can be obtained by using a suitable set of loss correlations. The use of different passage loss models led to high deviations in the predicted rotor losses, especially with turbine designs having the highest or lowest specific speeds. The best agreement in respect to CFD results with the average deviation of less than 10% was found when using the CETI passage loss model. In addition, the othe... [more]

Use of Bioluminescence for Monitoring Brown Coal Mine Waters from Deep and Surface Drainage
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bioluminescence, brown coal, color, mine waters, water activity
Open-pit mines can cause environmental changes, such as alterations of landscape structure, hydrology, air quality, and river sediments; they can also generate cones of depression. We propose a new method for surveys of mine waters using the example of an open-pit mine in central Poland. This study examines the correlations between bioluminescence and the color of brown coal mine waters and tests whether values of the three-color coordinate system reflected the physicochemical quality of mine waters measured in real-time and in the field. Our results show that alkalinity, pH reaction, and conductivity are higher in surface drainage, while values of trophic parameters (soluble reactive phosphates, total phosphorus, nitrates) are greater in samples representing subsurface drainage. Correlation analysis of bioluminescence with mine water quality parameters showed that only water color had a strong association with bioluminescence. This correlation is stronger for surface drainage, than fo... [more]

In order to tap the world wide offshore wind resources above deep waters, cost efficient floating platforms are inevitable. Tension-Leg Platforms (TLPs) could enable that crucial cost reduction in floating wind due to their smaller size and lighter weight compared to spars and semi-submersibles. The continuous development of the GICON®-TLP is driven by computer-aided engineering. So-called aero-hydro-servo-elastic coupled simulations are state-of-the-art for predicting loads and simulating the global system behavior for floating offshore wind turbines. Considering the complexity of such simulations, it is good scientific praxis to validate these numerical calculations by use of scaled model testing. Possibilities of Capturing Methane from Hard Coal Deposits Lying at Great Depths
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: drainage efficiency, drainage methods, methane hazard, the safety of exploration
Methane present in coal seams is a natural hazard present during the exploitation of underground mining plants. It is an explosive and flammable gas that is released into mining excavations, and it is necessary to reduce its concentration. Capturing methane while preparing extraction is virtually impossible due to the low permeability of coal resulting from its deposition depth. After the beginning of exploitation and disrupting the seam’s structure, methane is released into mine air. The most common method of minimizing gas released into ventilation air is draining the rock mass. This method allows achieving the desired ventilation parameters but requires appropriate mining techniques in hazardous areas. The article presents the example of methane capture during the operation in the longwall B-15 with an overlying drainage gallery. The authors have highlighted an example of the longwall B-15 that when using this particular drainage method, allowed capturing twice the amount of methane... [more]

Renewable Energy Integration in Vietnam’s Power System: Generation Adequacy Assessment and Strategic Implications
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: generation adequacy assessment, power sector, probabilistic modeling approach, renewable energy integration, strategic approach, Vietnam
Vietnam is widely considered as an energy-intensive economy. Renewable energy integration has been set as an important goal in the country’s revised Power Development Plan 7 (PDP7). This study first conducted a generation adequacy assessment using the basic probabilistic modeling approach to evaluate how the generation fleet, as foreseen in the PDP7, can meet the demand, despite the fast-changing renewable energy sources (RES) generation. The adequacy of the generation was measured using the Loss of Load Expectation (LOLE, expressed in hours) index. The study then conducted in-depth interviews with key stakeholders to identify and propose efficient strategic approach and policy implementations for integration of RES into the current power system in Vietnam. The results suggested that three major pillars should be considered to ensure the success of RES integration: strategic objectives, structural reforms and system transformation.

With an increasing share in energy production, wind turbines have to fulfill strict grid requirements to support the grid in case of discontinuities. Here LVRT (Low Voltage Ride Through) compliance is one essential part, where the turbine has to stay connected to the grid in case of voltage drops and is not allowed to stop. This paper comprises measured low-voltage events from an LVRT campaign with a focus on the mechanical loads for the drivetrain and tower during these temporary and instant drops of power. Moreover, we analyze the turbine operation itself, like the rotational speed, which is essential to keep the turbine within its operational parameters and design limits.
