Techno-Economic Assessment of Half-Cell Modules for Desert Climates: An Overview on Power, Performance, Durability and Costs
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: desert modules, economics and costs, half-cell module, performance, reliability, soiling
Photovoltaic modules in desert areas benefit from high irradiation levels but suffer from harsh environmental stress factors, which influence the Levelized Cost of Electricity by decreasing the lifetime and performance and increasing the maintenance costs. Using optimized half-cell module designs mounted in the most efficient orientation according to the plant requirements can lead to reduced production costs, increased energy yield and longer service lives for PV modules in desert areas. In this work, we review the technical advantages of half-cell modules in desert regions and discuss the potential gains in levelized costs of electricity due to reduced material consumption, a higher cell-to-module power ratio, lower module temperatures, better yields, reduced cleaning cycles and finally, reduced fatigue in interconnection due to thermal cycling. We show that half-cell modules are the most cost-effective option for desert areas and are expected to have a relevant lower Levelized Cost... [more]

Greening of the District Heating Systems—Case Study of Local Systems
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: decarbonization, district heating system, seasonal heat storage, solar collectors, techno-economic modeling
The integration of renewable energy resources into district heating systems is gaining momentum across Europe, as heat producers are expected to work towards the EU Directive of Efficient District Heating and Cooling to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. This paper studies the techno-economic implications of transforming conventional district heating systems of six locations in Poland, generating 8.5 PJ of heat annually, into sustainable and efficient district heating systems. These new systems consist of flat solar collectors integrated with seasonal pit thermal energy storages and gas heating plants, acting as flexible heat sources, covering residual heat demand and/or increasing the parameters of the working medium in the network. Using the IEA-TIMES software, two scenarios were considered, namely STAT and DYN. The results show that reaching a 20% share of heat production by solar thermal would demand extra construction of seasonal heat storage facilities with a total capacity of 19... [more]

The Experimental Investigation of a New Panel Design for Thermoelectric Power Generation to Maximize Output Power Using Solar Radiation
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: Fresnel lens, heat exchanger, Seebeck, solar radiation, thermoelectric generator
It is well established that renewable energy resources for electricity generation are free. In hot areas, solar energy has become one of the major interests of researchers and specialists. This paper aims to experimentally investigate the maximum voltage generation of a thermoelectric generator (TEG) panel. This panel was built from many TEG modules that are connected in series and in parallel. The panel was exposed to high heat due to solar radiation during summer, either directly or through a Fresnel lens. The other side of the TEG panel was cooled using tap water that was passed through aluminum heat exchangers in an active cooling method. It was found that the maximum open-circuit voltage of this TEG panel using a Fresnel lens was 9.35 V. With no lens, it was 11.75 V at 14:00 h local time. The experiments were done during a sunny July period in Iraq.

Voltage Readjustment Methodology According to Pressure and Temperature Applied to a High Temperature PEM Fuel Cell
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: atmospheric pressure, design of experiments, Fuel Cells, high temperature PEMFC, Hydrogen, more electric aircraft, operating conditions, readjustment method
The operating conditions can have uncontrolled effects on the voltage of a High-Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (HT-PEMFC). For instance, the HT-PEMFC can be used at ambient pressure, i.e., without having a back pressure regulator. In this case, the variation in the atmospheric pressure directly affects pressures inside the fuel cell, which induces voltage variation. Moreover, in transient phases, several coupled phenomena can have an uncontrolled effect on the voltage. For example, following a change in the current operating point, thermal conditions in the fuel cell can vary, and the temperature stabilization then leads to a voltage variation. This article introduces a readjustment method for the fuel cell voltage to compensate for the effects of the pressure and temperature variations that are undergone and to decouple their effects. This methodology is based on the realization of a design of experiments to characterize the voltage sensitivity to pressure ([1; 1.5 bar... [more]

Performance Evaluation of Silicon and GaN Switches for a Small Wireless Power Transfer System
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: Gallium Nitride, GaN HEMT, inductive resonance, wireless power transfer (WPT)
In the last few years, the wide diffusion of rechargeable devices has fueled the research interest in wireless power transfer (WPT) technology that offers advantages such as safety, flexibility, and ease of use. Different standards have been developed over the years but a significant part of the global interest is focused on the inductive resonant wireless power transfer. By increasing the resonance frequency, an improvement in the transfer efficiency between transmit and receive coils is generally observed, at the expense, however, of an increase in losses in the switching devices that constitute the transmitting and receiving circuits. This study concerned the performance evaluation of a WPT transmitting circuit built using Gallium Nitride (GaN) or conventional silicon (Si) switching devices, to assess their specific contribution to the overall efficiency of the system. The overall performance of two circuits, respectively based on GaN HEMTs and Si MOSFETs, were compared at frequenci... [more]

Design of an MPPT Technique for the Indirect Measurement of the Open-Circuit Voltage Applied to Thermoelectric Generators
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: DC–DC converter, fuzzy logic, indirect measurement, MPPT, open-circuit voltage, thermoelectric generators
This paper presents the design of a maximum power point-tracking (MPPT) technique for DC−DC converters that are used in energy-harvesting systems based on thermoelectric generators. This technique is based on the analysis of the characteristics of the converter to measure the open-circuit voltage indirectly. The main contribution of this article is that the algorithm measures the voltage at the maximum power point without the need to disconnect the source of the circuit, as happens when the fractional open-circuit voltage (FOCV) technique is used. The algorithm is based on a predetermined initial duty cycle, which is applied to the circuit, and the input voltage and input current are read. With these values, the open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current are calculated with equations obtained from the circuit. Then, it calculates the duty cycle at the maximum power point and applies it to the circuit. If this duty cycle does not obtain the maximum power from the circuit, the algori... [more]

A Framework to Analyze the Requirements of a Multiport Megawatt-Level Charging Station for Heavy-Duty Electric Vehicles
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: Batteries, charging infrastructure, charging load, heavy-duty electric vehicles, station design, vehicle telemetry
Widespread adoption of heavy-duty (HD) electric vehicles (EVs) will soon necessitate the use of megawatt (MW)-scale charging stations to charge high-capacity HD EV battery packs. Such a station design needs to anticipate possible station traffic, average and peak power demand, and charging/wait time targets to improve throughput and maximize revenue-generating operations. High-power direct current charging is an attractive candidate for MW-scale charging stations at the time of this study, but there are no precedents for such a station design for HD vehicles. We present a modeling and data analysis framework to elucidate the dependencies of a MW-scale station operation on vehicle traffic data and station design parameters and how that impacts vehicle electrification. This framework integrates an agent-based charging station model with vehicle schedules obtained through real-world vehicle telemetry data analysis to explore the station design and operation space. An Approach to the Design and the Interactions of a Fully Superconducting Synchronous Generator and Its Power Converter
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: fully superconducting generator, HTS, power converter, synchronous generator, wind energy
The design of a fully superconducting wind power generator is influenced by several factors. Among them, a low number of pole pairs is desirable to achieve low AC losses in the superconducting stator winding, which greatly influences the cooling system design and, consecutively, the efficiency of the entire wind power plant. However, it has been identified that a low number of pole pairs in a superconducting generator tends to greatly increase its output voltage, which in turn creates challenging conditions for the necessary power electronic converter. This study highlights the interdependencies between the design of a fully superconducting 10 MW wind power generator and the corresponding design of its power electronic converter.

Design and Analysis of Novel Synchronous Motion Technique for a Multi-Module Permanent Magnet Linear Synchronous Motor
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: coupling inductance, mathematical model, multi-module, position synchronization
Traditionally, synchronous motion among multi-module permanent magnet linear synchronous motors (PMLSM) has been achieved by adopting independent power supply and control. This method, however, requires multiple drivers and has control time delays. This paper proposes a novel approach to overcome these drawbacks, in which the windings of each module connect in series. Aiming at this electrical connection, we conduct research on electromagnetic and synchronous characteristics. Firstly, a two-module PMLSM is created as a case. Secondly, accurate mathematical models considering coupling inductance for this novelty structure are established, which are essential to driving control. The synchronous characteristics of the two-module are then compared with the independent control of each module. Furthermore, this comparison is conducted under both external and no external disturbance. Finally, experimental results verify the correctness of mathematical models, and reveal that this novel techni... [more]

Uniform and Non-Uniform Pumping Effect on Ce:Nd:YAG Side-Pumped Solar Laser Output Performance
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: aspherical lens, Ce:Nd:YAG, light guide, side-pumped, solar laser, uniformity
The Ce:Nd:YAG is a recent active medium in solar-pumped lasers with great potential. This study focuses on the influence of two secondary concentrators: a fused silica aspherical lens and a rectangular fused silica light guide; and consequent pump light distribution on the output performance of a Ce:Nd:YAG side-pumped solar laser. The solar laser head with the aspherical lens concentrated the incident pump light on the central region of the rod, producing the highest continuous-wave 1064 nm solar laser power of 19.6 W from the Ce:Nd:YAG medium. However, the non-uniformity of the absorbed pump profile produced by the aspherical lens led to the rod fracture because of the high thermal load, limiting the maximum laser power. Nevertheless, the solar laser head with the light guide uniformly spread the pump light along the laser rod, minimizing the thermal load issues and producing a maximum laser power of 17.4 W. Despite the slight decrease in laser power, the use of the light guide avoide... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: coil, energy harvesting, highway bridge, permanent magnet, sensor, vibration
In this paper, an analytical method is proposed for the modeling of electromagnetic energy harvesters (EMEH) with planar arrays of permanent magnets. It is shown that the proposed method can accurately simulate the generation of electrical power in an EMEH from the vibration of a bridge subjected to traffic loading. The EMEH consists of two parallel planar arrays of 5 by 5 small cubic permanent magnets (PMs) that are firmly attached to a solid aluminum base plate, and a thick rectangular copper coil that is connected to the base plate through a set of four springs. The coil can move relative to the two magnetic arrays when the base plate is subjected to an external excitation caused by the vehicles passing over the bridge. The proposed analytical model is used to formulize the magnetic interaction between the magnetic arrays and the moving coil and the electromechanical coupling between both the electrical and mechanical domains of the EMEH. A finite element model is developed to verif... [more]

Industrial Data Denoising via Low-Rank and Sparse Representations and Its Application in Tunnel Boring Machine
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: fuzzy c-means clustering, industrial data denoising, low rank, sparse representation, tunnel boring machine
The operation data of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) reflects its geological conditions and working status, which can provide critical references and essential information for TBM designers and operators. However, in practice, operation data may get corrupted due to equipment failures or data management errors. Moreover, the working state of a TBM system usually changes, which results in patterns of operation data that vary comparatively. This paper proposes a denoising approach to process the corrupted data. This approach is combined with low-rank matrix recovery (LRMR) and sparse representation (SR) theory. The classical LRMR model requires that the noise must be sparse, but the sparsity of noise cannot be fully guaranteed. In the proposed model, a weighted nuclear norm is utilized to enhance the sparsity of sparse components, and a constraint of condition number is applied to ensure the stability of the model solution. The approach is coupled with a fuzzy c-means algorithm (FCM) to f... [more]

Modeling and Analysis of the Flow Characteristics of Liquid Hydrogen in a Pipe Suffering from External Transient Impact
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: external transient impact, flow characteristics, fluid–structure coupling, liquid hydrogen
Pipes can be subjected to external transient impacts such as accidental collision, which affects the safe operation of storage and transportation systems for liquid hydrogen. Fluid−structure coupling calculation for a pipe under external transient impact is performed, and the flow characteristics of liquid hydrogen in the pipe are analyzed. The pipe deforms and vibrates when suffering from external transient impact. Liquid hydrogen pressure in a cross-section plane increases along the pipe deformation direction. Additionally, external transient impact enhances the disturbance of liquid hydrogen near the pipe wall. The increased flow resistance and the energy induced by the deformed pipe both affect the flow of liquid hydrogen, and contribute to the fluctuated characteristics of liquid pressure drop. In addition, the phase state of liquid hydrogen remains unchanged in the pipe, indicating that little of the induced energy is transformed into the internal energy of liquid hydrogen. The w... [more]
