Methods of Assessing the Effectiveness of Filter Elements in Power Electronics
Michał Borecki, Jan Sroka
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CISPR 17, EMC, ferrite, filter, power electronics, radio emission
Newly constructed devices must meet a number of requirements in terms of the level of generated disturbances. To achieve an acceptable level in such devices, filters are installed—one of the cheapest ways to reduce interference in devices. One of the key elements of the filter that is responsible for the effectiveness of noise reduction are ferrites. Unfortunately, for various devices, an individual approach should be used in the selection of filters and, accordingly, ferrites. Due to the fact that ferrites from different manufacturers do not have standardized characteristics and information on their effectiveness, the selection of the right ferrite is a very time-consuming process. Therefore, this article will present the possibilities of quickly determining selected ferrite parameters in order to ensure the necessary level of noise reduction. For this purpose, assumptions from the CISPR 17 standard will be used. For selected types of ferrites, a large number of measurements were carr... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bioclimatic design, dynamic effect of thermal bridges, heat transfer, window frames
Windows are responsible for significant amounts of energy loss through typical building envelopes. There have been multiple studies on heat loss through the glazing unit and frame system. This study presents an experimental investigation of a window unit and focuses specifically on the conductance between the structural elements and the frame system of a conventional house in the city of Xanthi, northern Greece. It is obvious that even a perfect window system cannot reduce heat transfer between the base of the frame and the upper surface of the floor. The experimental and simulation procedure of this project includes the installation of an insulating layer in front of the window unit for a variety of frames (solid wood, aluminum, PVC, etc.) at different distances. The main objective of this paper is to determine how effective an insulating barrier can be in respect to different types of frame, glazing, and weather conditions for the control of heat loss. Through the application of this... [more]

Agnieszka Włodyka-Bergier, Tomasz Bergier
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: chlorine dioxide, disinfection by-products, swimming pool water treatment
This article presents the results of experiments on the effect of chlorine dioxide, applied as an additional oxidant, on swimming pool water quality. Three doses of chlorine dioxide were applied: 22, 44 and 66 mg/m3. At each research stage, prior to the actual experiment, in which the oxidant was dosed, the background was tested, i.e., water samples were taken from a conventional treatment system (without chlorine dioxide). The experiments showed that chlorine dioxide effectively removes organic compounds and their chlorine derivatives. For the highest dose of ClO2, CODMn decreased by almost 88% and chloroform concentration by 75%. Chlorine dioxide also effectively supports water disinfection. At the highest dose, the number of mesophilic bacteria decreased by 60% and the number of psychrophiles by 94%. However, after the dosing of this oxidant had been discontinued, a deterioration of the microbiological water quality and the secondary growth of microorganisms were observed. Chlorine... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: direct air capture, Methanol, process integration, solar energy, techno-economic assessment, thermochemical cycle
Non-abatable emissions are one of the decarbonization challenges that could be addressed with carbon-neutral fuels. One promising production pathway is the direct air capture (DAC) of carbon dioxide, followed by a solar thermochemical cycle and liquid fuel synthesis. In this study, we explore different combinations of these technologies to produce methanol from an economic perspective in order to determine the most efficient one. For this purpose, a model is built and simulated in Aspen Plus®, and a solar field is designed and sized with HFLCAL®. The inherent dynamics of solar irradiation were considered with the meteorological data from Meteonorm® at the chosen location (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia). Four different integration strategies are assessed by determining the minimum selling price of methanol for each technology combination. These values were compared against a baseline with no synergies between the DAC and the solar fuels production. The results show that the most economical metha... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ancillary services, design methodology, energy storage system, high-voltage direct current (HVDC), modular multilevel converter (MMC), power converter
To provide ancillary services in HVDC applications, modular multilevel converters (MMCs) with integration of energy storage systems are a promising solution as they take advantage of the modularity and the controllability of the stored energy. In these solutions, an energy storage system is connected to the DC capacitor of a submodule (SM) to make an energy storage submodule (ES-SM). An MMC with partial integration (MMC-PIES) is an MMC with each arm made of a mix of SMs and ES-SMs. In this paper, we propose a novel design methodology for these converters considering they are built based on existing prebuilt submodules, while design methodologies in the literature consider the SM and ES-SM characteristics to be degrees of freedom. Therefore, the proposed approach is closer to an industrial standpoint and computes the minimum number of ES-SMs to comply with requirements. We also include a new optimization method for the circulating currents needed to balance the energy in the SM and ES-S... [more]

Keywords: composite riser, flexible riser, guidelines, monitoring, offshore platform, riser
The increasing energy demand has led to more explorations in the oil and gas industry. To achieve this, marine risers and pipelines are used to convey fluid and other resources to meet the increasing demand. In recent years, hybrid flexible composite risers have become more adaptable. Flexible risers have already proven to be a popular riser solution for various floating production systems in shallow to deepwater in many parts of the world due to their good dynamic behaviour and dependability. The hybrid flexible composite riser is made up of numerous layers of plastics, flexible pipes, composites, and steel. Some innovative monitoring methods, such as Fiber Optics Bragg Gratings (FBG), are based on a clamped composite structure with embedded optical fibre. This study presents characteristics of the monitoring techniques of composite flexible riser technology. The advantages of the monitoring techniques include aiding composite riser measurements, recording data from riser deformation,... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: axial flow pump, axial flow velocity, boundary layer, circumferential velocity component, end-wall effect, flow angle, rotation effect
The existing experimental technology cannot accurately and quantitatively measure the flow field structure and the wall boundary layer displacement effect in the axial flow pump. Based on SST k-ω turbulence model, a three-dimensional unsteady numerical simulation of the whole flow field of an axial flow pump was presented at the designed operating point to overcome the weakness of traditional measurement methods in measuring the flow field of the axial flow pump. The flow field structure of the axial flow pump inlet was studied quantitatively and the result was compared with the theoretical design value. It was found that there is an obvious impeller rotation effect and end-wall effect in the flow field of the axial flow pump inlet. The distribution law of the impeller inlet flow field and the crowding coefficient caused by the wall boundary layer were obtained. The pump inlet measurement point in the experiment and calculation domain inlet in the simulation should be kept at a distanc... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cavitation, inducer, liquid oxygen, liquid water, thermodynamic effect, Zwart model
Clean energy liquid oxygen is more and more widely used in aerospace, but the research on the thermodynamic characteristics of liquid oxygen is still less. In this paper, a method for correcting the local saturated vapor pressure by thermodynamic effect is proposed, so we establish the Zwart modified cavitation model considering the thermodynamic characteristics. We choose the turbine pump inducer as the research object, and select liquid water and liquid oxygen at different temperatures as the fluid medium. Based on two different Zwart cavitation models, the cavitation flow characteristics of liquid water at different temperatures of 298 K, 320 K and 350 K are numerically simulated and analyzed, and the cavitation flow characteristics of liquid oxygen at different temperatures of 85 K, 90 K and 95 K are also numerically simulated and analyzed. According to the analysis of the simulation results, for liquid water at the temperature of 298−350 K, since the change range of its thermophys... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: furfural, oxidative condensation, oxidative esterification
Furfural is one of the most important biomass platform compounds and can be used to prepare various high-value-added chemicals. The reactions of furfural with aliphatic alcohols via an oxidative esterification reaction or oxidative condensation reaction can bond two carbon molecules together and produce longer hydrocarbon chains chemicals, including methylfuroate and some low-volatility liquid biomass fuels. Thus, these reactions are considered significant utilization routes of furfural, and many inspiring catalytic systems have been designed to promoted these reactions. In this work, the reported catalytic systems for the oxidative esterification and oxidative condensation reactions are reviewed separately. The catalysts for the oxidative esterification reaction are reviewed for the classification of noble metal catalysts and non-noble metal catalysts, according to the active metals in the catalysts. For the oxidative condensation reactions, the studies using oxygen as the oxidant are... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air collectors, experimental testing, photovoltaic-thermal
Over the last decade, the market has experienced a growing interest in hybrid photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) technologies, although more long-term studies are needed before air-based PVT panels are fully implemented. In this paper, we present the experimental framework developed around an air-based PVT collector, consisting of a high-quality photovoltaic laminate and a newly designed thermal absorber. The experimental performance of the collector was measured both in lab testing and in a pilot plant during one of the field operations. Results show an almost constant electrical performance of 15−19%, and a thermal performance that changes a lot, ranged between 15−52% for the individual panel and 11−35% for the system of 2.5 panels in series (to maximize output temperature). Field operation presents average thermal and electrical efficiencies ranged between 16−20% with an electrical−thermal generation ratio close to 1:1.

Keywords: Candida antarctica, CO2 supercritical, EPA/DHA, immobilized lipase B, mass spectrometry, n-3 LCPUFA, salmon oil, sn-2 position, structured acylglycerols
The bioavailability of n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LCPUFAs) has shown to be greatly influenced by their location in the triacylglycerol backbone. Therefore, the synthesis of structured acylglycerols (SAcyl), which include eicosapentaenoic acids (EPAs) or docosahexaenoic acids (DHAs) at the sn-2 position, has attracted a great interest. The objective of this study was to optimize the synthesis process of a SAcyl from commercial refined salmon oil and an EPA/DHA concentrate in order to enhance the positioning of EPA and DHA in the sn-2 location of the glycerol moiety. For this purpose, immobilized lipase B from Candida antarctica (nonspecific) was used for the acidolysis process under the CO2 supercritical condition. As a result of carrying out a Draper-Lin composite design through the response surface methodology of 18 experiments, an optimized extraction including SAcyl compounds was obtained. Mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF) analysis was employed to identify the EPA/D... [more]

This paper represents a detailed techno-economic analysis of a typical commercial-scale catalytic decarboxylation process of naphthenic acids over HZSM-5 zeolite. Simulation of the process has been performed in ASPEN Plus®. The performance of the modeled unit was compared to experimental results data from a similar plant. Two models were developed for the proposed industrial plant based on continuous flow reactors; the first is based on a fluidized bed reactor, and it was modeled as a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) unit, and the second is a semi-regenerative process that consists of three fixed-bed reactors with intermediate preheaters and are modeled as three plug flow reactors (PFR). The outcome of the economic analysis of the two proposed commercial scale reactors of a decarboxylation process of a capacity of 11,000 bbl/day showed that the CAPEX, including the total equipment cost for the fluidized bed reactor plant and semi-regenerative process plant, was $44,319,362 and $4... February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: reactive Cross-fluid, variable fluid properties, viscous dissipation phenomenon
This article’s goal was to explain how chemical reaction and viscous dissipation affect a non-Newtonian Cross-fluid in a boundary layer flow due to a stretching sheet with variable fluid properties. The results were obtained after assuming laminar, steady, and viscous flow characteristics. In this study, the analysis took into account the characteristics of the fluid variable diffusivity and slip velocity. It was considered that fluid viscosity and thermal conductivity are temperaturedependent variables. Because of their mobility, non-Newtonian fluid particles are thought to interact chemically. The physical problem is governed by a set of partial differential equations that are not linear. Anumerical solution was reached usingNewton’s shooting methodology and the Runge−Kutta integration technique. A set of figures displays the distributions of the temperature, concentration, and velocity at various physical parameter values. The influence of all physical parameters is shown in tabular... Eric Otto, Robert Dürr, Achim Kienle
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: agglomeration, bifurcation analysis, fluidized bed, granulation, layering growth
Particle formation in fluidized beds is widely applied in an industrial context for the solidification of liquids and size enlargement of granular materials. The two main size-enlargement mechanisms are layering growth and agglomeration. For continuous process configurations with sieve-mill-recycle and layering growth only, the occurrence of undesired self-sustained oscillations in the particle size distribution under certain process conditions is well-known. This contribution investigates the stability of the practically relevant process with additional particle agglomeration by means of a model-based numerical bifurcation analysis. It is shown that the occurrence of stable limit cycles is inhibited by an increased rate of particle agglomeration for a variety of different process conditions and different agglomeration kinetics. These results enhance the understanding of the agglomeration and layering growth dynamics and are relevant for the process design and operation.

This work discusses the conceptual process design for the integrated production of bio-based acrylic acid from carob pod aqueous extracts. CHEMCAD was used for the process simulation and cost estimation of the relevant equipment. The process was designed for a capacity of 68 kt of carob pod per year, operating 8000 h annually, and involving extraction, fermentation, catalytic dehydration, and distillation to achieve 99.98%w/w acrylic acid as the main product. The economic assessment for the base case suggests a fixed capital investment of EUR 62.7 MM with an internal rate of return of 15.8%. The results obtained show that carob pod is a promising biomass source for the production of bio-acrylic acid.

Keywords: ANSYS, centrifugal pump, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), performance characteristic
The paper presents a validation of the results of a numerical model of radial centrifugal pump flow using a PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) experimental method. For this purpose, a 3D model of the pump was created in Inventor, which was then used to design a numerical flow model in Ansys in the CFX module. The performance characteristics of the same pump were measured on an experimental test circuit, and vector maps of the flow in the suction pipe were obtained using the PIV method. The results of the experiment—vector fields of fluid velocity distribution in a suction pipe—were then compared with the outputs of the numerical Ansys model, namely the streamlines and pressure distributions. This comparison demonstrated that the numerical model is most consistent with reality if the input variables are the pressure in front of the pump and the mass flow behind the pump. In this case, the model can determine the pressure at the pump inlet with a deviation of 1% to 10% and create streamlin... [more]

Keywords: carbon black, Hydrogen, melt pyrolysis of methane, Ni foam
Methane pyrolysis transforming CH4 into hydrogen without a CO2 byproduct is a potential hydrogen production process under the net-zero emission target. The melt pyrolysis of methane is a technology that could simultaneously obtain hydrogen and carbon products. However, its catalytic activity and stability are still far from satisfactory. In this work, a new strategy for the melt pyrolysis of methane to hydrogen production was proposed using Ni foam and molten NaCl-KCl. The increase in the amount of Ni foam was found to enhance the methane conversion rate from 12.6% to 18%. The process was optimized by the different amounts of catalysts, the height of the Ni foam layer, and the filling method of Ni foam, indicating that the methane conversion rate of the string method could reach 19.2% at 900 °C with the designed aeration device. Furthermore, we observed that the addition of molten salt significantly alleviated the carbon deposition deactivation of the Ni foam and maintained its macrost... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fissure rate, goaf-side entry by roof cutting, hard main roof, newly designed strategy, pressure relief pre-splitting blasting technology
The key parameters of pressure relief pre-splitting blasting technology (PRPBT) contribute to the implementation effect of goaf-side entry by roof cutting (GSERC). This study is an attempt to design the key parameters including the roof cutting height, the roof cutting angle, the spacing between blasting boreholes, the charge structure and the sealing length by using theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and field implementation. The basic quality index of the main roof is 666.27, and combined with the peeping observation result, the main roof belongs to the category of a hard main roof. Different from a weakened roof and a compound roof, the unreasonable parameters of the PRPBT for the hard main roof lead to three problems including an insufficient pre-splitting blasting effect, roof suspension in the goaf and serious damage to the rock mass for the roof cutting rib. The PRPBT effect is closely related to key parameters, including the roof cutting parameters and the pre-splitting... [more]

Keywords: albedo, emission credit, global warming, radiative forcing meter
Global warming mitigation via terrestrial albedo increase has been widely investigated in literature; the proposed methodologies relate CO2 compensation to albedo increase generally via the concept of Radiative Forcing (RF). However, literature methods calculate RF by averaged input data, without considering RF variation due to many local and temporal phenomena. For instance, an average value of compensated effect of albedo change (Δα = 0.01) is 3 kg CO2eq/m2, which has been introduced no matter the position and climatic condition of the site. In our study, we propose a novel procedure to measure RF continuous time history by means of ground measurements, astronomical equations, and satellite calibration. The procedure is called RF-meter. In this way, a more accurate assessment of compensated CO2 may be achieved. A test facility is also designed and proposed to double check the procedure, and preliminary results are reported in order to show and test the calibration procedure. It is ex... [more]

Keywords: permeability, porosity, reservoir parameter prediction, temporal convolutional network, water saturation
Predicting reservoir parameters accurately is of great significance in petroleum exploration and development. In this paper, we propose a reservoir parameter prediction method named a fusional temporal convolutional network (FTCN). Specifically, we first analyze the relationship between logging curves and reservoir parameters. Then, we build a temporal convolutional network and design a fusion module to improve the prediction results in curve inflection points, which integrates characteristics of the shallow convolution layer and the deep temporal convolution network. Finally, we conduct experiments on real logging datasets. The results indicate that compared with the baseline method, the mean square errors of FTCN are reduced by 0.23, 0.24 and 0.25 in predicting porosity, permeability, and water saturation, respectively, which shows that our method is more consistent with the actual reservoir geological conditions. Our innovation is that we propose a new reservoir parameter prediction... [more]

Keywords: design, nanofluid, photovoltaic thermal, sheet and tube, thermal collector
The photovoltaic thermal (PVT) system was initially developed by attaching a simple sheet and tube thermal collector to the PV panel to improve cell performance while producing heat energy. The collector designs and heat transfer fluid are the main focus of PVT research, with the sheet and tube collector being the direct reference, and nanofluid being the promised working fluid. This study intends to review the development of the sheet and tube PVT (ST-PVT) system reported by researchers in the literature by searching and selecting quality literature from reputable academic databases guided by set criteria to maintain the consistency and validity of the literature selection. The findings indicate that the ST-PVT system with no glazing and a serpentine collector offers the most desirable thermal and electrical performance. It is also learned that CuO/water nanofluid enhances ST-PVT overall efficiency at a higher rate. However, it is observed that nanofluid required more pumping power, u... [more]

Keywords: energy system, energy system analysis, prototype design, stream cooling, thermal refugia
Recent years have seen an increase in surface water temperatures in several streams and fisheries, which has a detrimental effect on cold-water species such as trout. One possibility to resolve this issue is to create localized refugia of colder water generated through active cooling. The current work focuses on a prototype thermal refugia design and field testing. Various configurations of the prototype thermal refugia were tested in a stream, which could benefit from additional refugia regions. The prototypes featured a staggered, tube-bundle heat exchanger placed inside an enclosure with an aperture. The results demonstrate that in remote locations, man-made refugia can be provided. While the base enclosure (91.5 cm × 91.5 cm × 45.8 cm) allowed for excess mixing with the warmer free stream and resulted in low performance (dimensionless temperature difference of θ¯avg= 0.07), additional modifications improved performance. By utilizing a panel or an extension, the dimensionless temper... [more]
