February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: carbon emissions, cold chain, electrical batteries, photovoltaic panels, refrigerated transport, thermal model
The path towards decarbonization requires a progressive adaptation of all refrigeration systems, but only stationary ones have been intensely studied to improve their environmental performance. However, refrigerated transport is vital in the cold chain and must be considered in the green transition. In this paper, we propose a model for a hybrid refrigerated van that includes photovoltaic panels and electric batteries to decrease total greenhouse gas emissions from the engine. Thermal, electrical, and battery sub-models are considered and integrated into the comprehensive hybrid solar-powered refrigerated van model. Different technologies are compared, including lithium and lead-acid batteries and three different types of photovoltaic panels. The model was validated regarding van fuel consumption, showing a 4% deviation. Single and multiple delivery scenarios are considered to assess the energy, economic, and environmental benefits. Monthly CO2,e emissions could be reduced by 20% compa... [more]

A New Reliability Allocation Method Based on PSA and AHP for Fusion Reactors
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: AHP, fusion reactor, PSA, reliability allocation
Reasonable and feasible reliability index allocation is significant for improving safety and reducing costs for fusion reactors. Although the reliability index is allocated when designing some key systems, reliability allocation is not implemented from the overall layer to the system and component layers for fusion reactors. In this contribution, fusion reactors are divided into different layers by applying the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP); these layers include the overall layer, system layer and component layer, failure mode layer, etc. Combining the Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) model for fusion reactors and AHP, the reliability index is allocated from the overall layer to the system and component layer. Firstly, a new reliability index allocation method based on PSA and AHP for fusion reactors is proposed. Secondly, the PSA model for an in-vessel LOCA accident of fusion reactors is selected as a case study to demonstrate the applications of the proposed method. Lastly, t... [more]

Magnetic Circuit Design and Experiment of Novel Lorentz Magnetic Bearing with Double Air Gap
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: air gap magnetic density, finite element method, lorentz magnetic bearing, magnetic field distribution
A uniform magnetic density distribution in the air gap is key for the Lorentz magnetic bearing to achieve high precision control and large torque output. To overcome the small magnetic field strength in an explicit magnetic bearing and a high magnetic density fluctuation rate in an implicit Lorentz magnetic bearing, a second air gap design method is proposed based on the maximum magnetic density distribution in the winding area. A novel Lorentz bearing with a double second air gap is designed. The maximum magnetic field strength in the winding area is calculated by the finite element method, and the structure of the double second air gap is designed. To reduce the calculation error of the magnetic field strength, the division of the reluctance by the magnetic induction line is proposed. The reluctance calculation formula is given. Based on Ohm’s law, the calculation of the magnetic field strength is obtained. Finally, a prototype of the novel Lorentz magnetic bearing is made. The magne... [more]

Design and Research on Electro-Hydraulic Drive and Energy Recovery System of the Electric Excavator Boom
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: electric excavator boom, electro-hydraulic drive and energy recovery system, energy management strategy, energy regeneration
The hydraulic accumulator has the advantages of high power density, fast response, stable operation and high cost performance. However, compared with the electric energy storage method, the hydraulic accumulator has low energy density and large pressure fluctuation while absorbing and discharging energy, which severely limits its application in hydraulic excavators. To improve the potential energy loss of the boom during the lowering process, an electro-hydraulic drive and energy recovery system for excavator booms (EHDR-EEB) based on a battery and accumulator is proposed. As a result, a simulation model of the electro-hydraulic drive and energy management strategy of a 1.6 t pure electric hydraulic excavator is built to investigate the energy regeneration and utilization. The simulation outcomes show that the potential energy recovery rate is as high as 92%. This research on EHDR-EEB makes a significant contribution to the economic improvement of electric hydraulic excavators.

Symmetry Detection and Topological Synthesis of Mechanisms of Powertrains
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: mechanism design, planetary gear train, powertrain, topological symmetry, topological synthesis
The function of vehicle powertrains (including hybrid powertrains) is to transmit power from the power source (engine or electric machine) to driving wheels. The planetary gear train (PGT) is a core structure of mechanisms of powertrains. The detection of topological symmetry is helpful for improving the efficiency of mechanism design. In this paper, we present a fully automatic and reliable method for detecting symmetry of plane kinematic chains and extend this method to symmetry detection and the topological design of mechanisms of powertrains. First, the topological model and adjacency matrix are introduced to represent various kinds of plane kinematic chains. Then, the moment matrix of the kinematic chain is established to obtain link groups, based on which we propose an algorithm to generate the unique numerical code of each link and precisely detect the symmetry. Our method is applied to synthesize different kinds of plane kinematic chains and mechanisms, which can improve the de... [more]

Parametric Study of Methyl Orange Removal Using Metal−Organic Frameworks Based on Factorial Experimental Design Analysis
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: Adsorption, analysis of variance (ANOVA), energy-saving, factorial design, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), methyl orange, pareto chart
Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are one of the most energy-intensive industries. Every stage of wastewater treatment consumes energy, which is the primary contributor to WWTP costs. Adsorbents and process optimization are critical for energy savings. The removal of dyes from industrial wastewater by adsorption using commercially available adsorbents is inefficient. Metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) have outstanding properties that can improve separation performance over current commercial adsorbents, and thus, these materials represent a milestone in improving dye removal in water treatment methods. In this work, three types of metal−organic frameworks (Fe-BTC, Cu-BTC, and ZIF-8) have been investigated as prospective adsorbents for methyl orange removal from water in batch setups. The results showed that at 15 mg/L MO initial concentration and 100 mg dosage, Fe-BTC had the highest removal efficiency of 91%, followed by ZIF-8 (63%), and finally Cu-BTC (35%), which exhibited structural... Produced Water Treatment and Valorization: A Techno-Economical Review
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: hydraulic fracturing, produced water, shale energy, water treatment
In recent years, environmental concerns have urged companies in the energy sector to modify their industrial activities to facilitate greater environmental stewardship. For example, the practice of unconventional oil and gas extraction has drawn the ire of regulators and various environmental groups due to its reliance on millions of barrels of fresh water—which is generally drawn from natural sources and public water supplies—for hydraulic fracturing well stimulation. Additionally, this process generates two substantial waste streams, which are collectively characterized as flowback and produced water. Whereas flowback water is comprised of various chemical additives that are used during hydraulic fracturing; produced water is a complex mixture of microbiota, inorganic and organic constituents derived from the petroliferous strata. This review will discuss the obstacles of managing and treating flowback and produced waters, concentrating on the hardest constituents to remove by curren... [more]

Design and Analysis of Modulated Magnetic Pole for Dual Three-Phase Surface-Mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: air-gap magnetic field, dual three-phase, finite element analysis, harmonic analysis, magnetic pole structure
In order to improve the air-gap magnetic field waveform and reduce the torque ripple of dual three-phase surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), a new surface-mounted modulated permanent magnet (PM) structure is proposed in this paper. Compared with the existing pole-cutting structure, the modulated magnetic pole does not need to customize the precise machining mold. However, when the modulation pole structure is installed, only the magnetic block-assisted assembly structure is designed to reduce the manufacturing cost. Based on the principle of specific harmonic elimination technology (SHET), the number, size and position angle of the modulated magnetic poles can be calculated, and the elimination or the injection of specific harmonics of the air-gap magnetic field can be realized, which can optimize the performance of the motor. It can be seen that the modulation pole structure based on SHET is also an effective method to improve the sinusoidal waveform of the ai... [more]

Performance Enhancement of a Centrifugal Compressor by Designing a Tandem Cascade Diffuser
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: centrifugal compressor, efficiency, tandem cascade diffuser, total bending angle
The performance of a vane diffuser plays an important role in transforming the high kinetic energy into pressure energy at the impeller outlet of a centrifugal compressor. In this study, the performance enhancement of a centrifugal compressor is achieved by designing a tandem cascade diffuser. An optimum value of the total bending angle of a tandem cascade diffuser is obtained through numerical simulation. The total bending angle is defined as the angle between the tangent line of the front blade arc line at the leading edge point and the tangent line of the rear blade arc line at the trailing edge point. The range of the total bending angle increases from zero to 21°. The simulation results show that the variation of the total bending angle has a great impact on the performances of the compressor stage. The best performance is achieved by the 10° model, by which the minimum total pressure loss coefficient and the maximum static pressure recovery coefficient are obtained. The mechanism... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: cooling systems, power semiconductor devices, self heating, thermal parameters, thermal phenomena, thermal resistance, transient thermal impedance
In this paper, a detailed review of contemporary cooling systems of semiconductor devices is presented. The construction and the principles of operation of selected components of passive and active cooling systems, as well as selected computer tools supporting the design of such systems, are described. The dependences of thermal parameters calculated using these tools on selected factors characterizing the used cooling systems, e.g., the dimensions of their components, are presented and discussed. Additionally, some results of measurements illustrating the influence of selected parameters on the thermal resistance of power MOSFETs mounted in different cooling systems are shown. The properties of selected cooling systems are compared, and it is shown that by changing the type of cooling system, it is possible to reduce the thermal resistance value of a power MOSFET even 20 times. The presented considerations can make the process of designing cooling systems more effective.

Design and Thermal Analysis of Linear Hybrid Excited Flux Switching Machine Using Ferrite Magnets
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: crooked tooth, ferrite magnet, flux switching machine, Genetic Algorithm, linear machine, LPMEC model, modular stator, thermal analysis
This paper presents a novel linear hybrid excited flux switching permanent magnet machine (LHEFSPMM) with a crooked tooth modular stator. Conventional stators are made up of a pure iron core, which results in high manufacturing costs and increased iron core losses. Using a modular stator lowers the iron volume by up to 18% compared to a conventional stator, which minimizes the core losses and reduces the machine’s overall cost. A crooked angle is introduced to improve the flux linkage between the stator pole and the mover slot. Ferrite magnets are used with parallel magnetization to reduce the cost of the machine. Two-dimensional FEA is performed to analyze and evaluate various performance parameters of the proposed machine. Geometric optimization is used to optimize the split ratio (S.R) and winding slot area (Slotarea). Genetic algorithm (GA) is applied and is used to optimize stator tooth width (STW), space between the modules (SS), crooked angle (α), and starting angle (θ). The pro... [more]

A New 7 kW Air-Core Transformer at 1.5 MHz for Embedded Isolated DC/DC Application
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: air-core transformer, automotive application, high frequency, passive devices, power converter
This paper presents the study of air-core transformers for electric vehicles, developing them for medium-power (tens of kWs) converter applications specifically used at a high frequency. Air-core transformers have the advantage of lacking magnetic saturation and iron losses, making them suitable for high-frequency applications. We designed and manufactured a transformer for a determined frequency and inductance value. The design of this passive component aims to both keep the magnetic field inside the transformer and manage the thermal energy efficiently. The electrical, magnetic, and thermal properties are simulated and then verified by experiments with a specific test bench. The transformer reaches high performances for a higher frequency than usual for an equivalent power transfer in automotive applications.

Keywords: accident-tolerant fuels, light water reactor, neutronics, nuclear fuel, silicon carbide
Our aim is to study the neutronic behaviour of potential accident-tolerant fuel (ATF) claddings in a pressurised water reactor under normal operations. This work compares ATF silicon carbide composite (SiC/SiC) cladding to conventional ZIRLOTM cladding in APR-1400. Additionally, a “sandwich” cladding design developed by the CEA is used for SiC/SiC. A Margin Design Method Based on the SPAN in Electricity Futures Market Considering the Risk of Power Factor
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: electricity futures, green power, margin requirement, power factor, VaR
On-grid integration of renewable energy, also called “green power”, is attracting more and more attention nowadays. Green power futures can be effective in increasing returns to suppliers and increasing market liquidity. However, compared to traditional futures, green power feed-in tariffs may be subject to integrity problems due to lower power factors; therefore, existing margin calculation methods for the futures market are no longer applicable. A SPAN-based margin calculation method that considers the power factor risk is proposed in this paper. The method provides the classification policies of the green power futures, based on the historical power factors of green power suppliers, and allows the margin amount to be adjusted as per the classification. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, empirical validation is presented by applying actual transaction data. Results prove that the proposed method can reduce the margin amount while covering the risk effectively.

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: axial skewed slot, combined casing treatment, end-wall injection, entropy generation, transonic compressor
To reduce the negative impacts of stall and surge on compressor performance, a novel combined casing treatment (CCT) structure with axial skewed slots and injection groove is proposed in this paper. The aerodynamic performance, as well as the mechanisms of loss generation, of a transonic axial compressor with NASA Rotor 67 are investigated numerically.
