Keywords: alkaline etching, anisotropic etching, diamond wire-sawn mono-silicon wafer, monocrystalline Si texturing, saw damage gettering, silicon texturing, texturing, thermal treatment
The etching of Si wafers significantly influences the efficiency of photovoltaic devices. Texturing can effectively decrease front surface reflection and improve device performance. Saw damage removal (SDR) is necessary to yields uniform random pyramidal surfaces without the appearance of saw marks, it entails significant consumption of chemical solutions and complicated cleaning steps. Herein, an alternative process of pre-texturing thermal treatment was carried out at 800 °C for 10 min, followed by anisotropic texturing, and a uniform pyramidal surface over a large area of the textured surface was obtained without saw marks. Compared with that of as-cut mono-Si wafers (30.7%), the weighted average reflectance of the samples textured with or without thermal treatment decreased to 11.2% and 11.9%, respectively, and further to 3% and 3.4%, respectively, when anti-reflection coatings were applied. In addition, saw marks on the wafer surface were used as gettering sites during thermal tre... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: agricultural wastes, bioethanol, biohydrogen, integrated biofuel
The need for fossil fuel alternatives keeps increasing. Bioethanol and biohydrogen have emerged as significant renewable options. However, these bioprocess routes have presented various challenges, which constantly impede commercialization. Most of these bottlenecks are hinged on feedstock logistics, low biofuel yield and enormous process costs. Meanwhile, a large output of renewable energy can be generated from mixed starch-based agricultural wastes due to their intrinsic bioenergy characteristics. This study, therefore, focuses on the production of bioethanol and biohydrogen from mixed starch-based agricultural wastes. The content further highlights the current challenges of their individual processes and elucidates the prospects for improvement, through an integrated biofuel approach. The use of mixed starch-based agricultural wastes as substrates for integrated bioethanol and biohydrogen production was proposed. Furthermore, the use of mixture-based experimental design for the dete... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: artificial neural network, methanol production via carbon dioxide hydrogenation, process configurations comparison, process design, simulation–based optimization
Methanol production via carbon dioxide (CO2) hydrogenation is a green chemical process, which can reduce CO2 emission. The operating conditions for minimum methanol production cost of three configurations were investigated in this work. An artificial neural network with Latin hypercube sampling technique was applied to construct model-represented methanol production. Price sensitivity was performed to study the impacts of the raw materials price on methanol production cost. Price sensitivity results showed that the hydrogen price has a large impact on the methanol production cost. In mathematical modeling using feedforward artificial neural networks, four different numbers of nodes were used to train artificial neural networks. The artificial neural network with eight numbers of nodes showed the most suitable configuration, which yielded the lowest percent error between the actual and predicted methanol production cost. The optimization results showed that the recommended process desig... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: double and triple tube heat exchangers, heat transfer efficiency, heat transfer enhancement, large wet perimeter, petal-shaped tube
Conventional circular double or triple tube type heat exchanger, DHE or THE, is one of the compact heat exchangers; a large number of studies have been performed to improve their heat transfer performance. The authors demonstrated that a petal-shaped special DHE with a large wet perimeter yields a high heat transfer efficiency, η. In this study, the DHE with six or five petals-, five shallow petals-, and circular-inner tubes were used. To further improve the η of the DHE, a THE with a petal-shaped inner tube along with the middle and outer circular tubes were used. Hot water flowed through the inner tube and cold water flowed through the middle and outer tubes as a counter current flow. The heat transfer was approximately equal; however, the flow resistance (pressure loss) of the outer tube of the DHE could be decreased using the middle and outer tubes under the same amount of cold water as the DHE; consequently, the η could be improved. In addition, the effect of changing the flow pat... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flexible operation, off-design operation, process modeling, solid fuel, thermal power plant
Since the widespread deployment of non-dispatchable, intermittent, and highly variable power production from renewable energy sources (RES), the demand for flexible power production has been steadily growing. As new-built dispatchable power plants have not been very quickly adapted to the emerging flexible operation, this task has been addressed by existing plants as well. Existing solid-fuel thermal power plants have undergone an extensive study to increase their flexible operation. Thermodynamic process-modeling tools have been extensively used for plant modeling. Steady- and transient-state simulations have been performed under various operating regimes, supplying valuable results for efficient power-plant operation. Flexibility aspects regarding low-load operation and steady operational conditions are mostly investigated with steady-state simulations. Flexibility aspects related to variation over time such as ramping rates are investigated with transient simulations. The off-design... [more]

Guoliang Zhang, Suhua Lou, Yaowu Wu, Yang Wu, Xiangfeng Wen
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bi-level optimization model, bio-natural gas, distributed renewable energy sources, integrated energy system, open energy markets
To promote the collaborative development of the bio-natural gas (BNG) industry and the integrated energy system (IES), this paper proposes a new commerce operation model considering the gas price adjustment mechanism for the IES with the utilization of bio-natural gas. The bi-level optimization model is used to simulate the clearing process within the open energy market framework, and the uncertainties of variable renewable energy output are modeled with a set of scenarios through the stochastic programming approach. In the upper-level model, the energy management center adjusts the bio-natural gas price rationally to minimize the expected total operating cost and release the price signal to the lower-level model; the lower-level model simulates the sub-markets clearing process to formulate detailed operation schemes. The bi-level model is transformed into a mathematical programming problem with equilibrium constraints (MPEC) through the Karush−Kuhn−Tucher (KKT) condition of the lower-... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bio-crude oil, coffee ground, fast pyrolysis, Simulation, tilted-slide reactor
The fast pyrolysis of coffee ground for bio-crude oil production was simulated in a tilted-slide reactor. The biochemical composition was derived by an extended biomass characterization method based on the elemental analysis. The simulation was performed in a steady-state and a Lagrangian multiphase model was adopted to describe the transport of sand and biomass particles together with a multistep kinetic mechanism for fast pyrolysis. When the secondary tar cracking reactions were not considered the volatile yield increased monotonically with temperature. The inclusion of secondary reactions could improve the prediction of volatile yield which turn to decrease at higher temperature. It was found that not only the maximum volatile yield but also the corresponding reactor temperature agreed well with the experimental results. At the temperature higher than 550 °C the trend of volatile yield is similar to that of experiment while it is larger at lower reactor temperature. The individual s... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: CIBSE TM46, energy benchmarking, energy performance certificate, thermal energy efficiency, university campus
In 2008, the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE TM46 UC) presented an annual-fixed thermal energy benchmark of 240 kWh/m2/yr for university campus (UC) buildings as an attempt to reduce energy consumption in public buildings. However, the CIBSE TM46 UC benchmark fails to consider the difference between energy demand in warm and cold months, as the thermal performance of buildings largely depends on the ambient temperature. This paper presents a new generation of monthly thermal energy benchmarks (MTEBs) using two computational methods including mixed-use model and converter model, which consider the variations of thermal demand throughout a year. MTEBs were generated using five basic variables, including mixed activities in the typical college buildings, university campus revised benchmark (UCrb), typical operation of heating systems, activities impact, and heating degree days. The results showed that MTEBs vary from 24 kWh/m2/yr in January to one and nearly ze... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: night ventilation, pedestrian thermal comfort, radiant cooling, solar shading, street canyon, traditional Chinese street
A Chinese traditional narrow street, named Cold-Lane, can create a microclimatic zone that provides pedestrian thermal comfort under hot and humid climate conditions. This phenomenon was observed through experimental measurement during the summer of 2016. The heat transfer rate over the pedestrian body surface was calculated to reveal why pedestrians experience a cool sensation, and computational flow dynamics (CFD) simulation was carried out to study the influence of the street aspect ratio on the shading effect. It was found that the perception of thermal comfort can be attributed mainly to the radiation between the relatively cool surrounding walls and the human body, and the wind velocity has little effect on sensible heat dissipation. The cool horizontal and vertical surfaces in the street canyon are mainly due to the shading effect as a result of the small aspect ratio, which is a typical characteristic of the traditional Chinese street. The shading effect of the high walls on bo... [more]

Keywords: annual energy production, dynamic wind turbine model, flow analysis, onshore wind farm, peak shaver, yaw motion
In this study, dynamic simulations of a wind turbine were performed to predict its dynamic performance, and the results were experimentally validated. The dynamic simulation received time-domain wind speed and direction data and predicted the power output by applying control algorithms. The target wind turbine for the simulation was a 2 MW wind turbine installed in an onshore wind farm. The wind speed and direction data for the simulation were obtained from WindSim, which is a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code for wind farm design, and measured wind speed and direction data with a mast were used for WindSim. For the simulation, the wind turbine controller was tuned to match the power curve of the target wind turbine. The dynamic simulation was performed for a period of one year, and the results were compared with the results from WindSim and the measurement. It was found from the comparison that the annual energy production (AEP) of a wind turbine can be accurately pre... [more]

Keywords: cloud amount forecasting, convolutional self-attention, deep learning, LSTM, microgrid, PV power generation forecasting, virtual power plant (VPP)
As the relative importance of renewable energy in electric power systems increases, the prediction of photovoltaic (PV) power generation has become a crucial technology, for improving stability in the operation of next-generation power systems, such as microgrid and virtual power plants (VPP). In order to improve the accuracy of PV power generation forecasting, a fair amount of research has been applied to weather forecast data (to a learning process). Despite these efforts, the problems of forecasting PV power generation remains challenging since existing methods show limited accuracy due to inappropriate cloud amount forecast data, which are strongly correlated with PV power generation. To address this problem, we propose a PV power forecasting model, including a cloud amount forecasting network trained with satellite images. In addition, our proposed model adopts convolutional self-attention to effectively capture historical features, and thus acquire helpful information from weathe... [more]

Keywords: deep learning, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), neural networks, sorption processes
The paper introduces the artificial intelligence (AI) approach for modeling fluidized adsorption beds. The idea of fluidized bed application allows a significantly increased heat transfer coefficient between adsorption bed and the surface of a heat exchanger, improving the performance of adsorption cooling and desalination systems. The Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network algorithm was used, classified as a deep learning method, to predict the vapor mass quantity in the adsorption bed. The research used an LSTM network with two hidden layers. The network used in the study is composed of seven inputs (absolute pressures in the adsorption chamber and evaporator, the temperatures in adsorption chamber and evaporator, relative pressure, the temperatures in the center of adsorption bed and 25 mm from the bed center, the kind of the solids mixture, the percentage value of the addition) and one output (mass of the sorption bed). The paper presents numerical research concerning mass predictio... [more]

Keywords: catalyst, composite, cranberry pomace, fruit processing, hydrothermal liquefaction
This study provides fundamental insight and offers a promising catalytic hydrothermal method to harness cranberry pomace as a potential bioenergy and/or hydrochar source. The physical and chemical properties of Canadian cranberry pomace, supplied by Fruit d’Or Inc., were examined and the optimum operational conditions, in terms of biocrude yield, were obtained by the I-optimal matrix of Design Expert 11. Afterward, cranberry pomace hydrochar (CPH) and zeolite were separately introduced to the hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) process to investigate the benefits and disadvantages associated with their catalytic activity. CPH was found to be a better host than zeolite to accommodate cellulosic sugars and showed great catalytic performance in producing hydrocarbons. However, high amounts of corrosive amino and aliphatic acids hinder the practical application of CPH as a catalyst. Alternatively, zeolite, as a commercial high surface area catalyst, had a higher activity for deoxygenation of c... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ancillary services, green hydrogen production, hydro power plant, power-to-gas systems, renewable energies
This paper discusses the potential of green hydrogen production in a case study of a Slovenian hydro power plant. To assess the feasibility and eligibility of hydrogen production at the power plant, we present an overview of current hydrogen prices and the costs of the power-to-gas system for green hydrogen production. After defining the production cost for hydrogen at the case study hydro power plant, we elaborate on the profitability of hydrogen production over electricity. As hydrogen can be used as a sustainable energy vector in industry, heating, mobility, and the electro energetic sectors, we discuss the current competitiveness of hydrogen in the heating and transport sectors. Considering the current prices of different fuels, it is shown that hydrogen can be competitive in the transport sector if it is unencumbered by various environmental taxes. The second part of the paper deals with hydrogen production in the context of secondary control ancillary service provided by a case s... [more]

Piotr Cheluszka
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: control algorithm, energy consumption, numerical tests, optimization of the process parameters, roadheader
This paper deals with the automation of the rock cutting process with roadheaders used widely in civil engineering for drilling roadways in underground mines and tunnels. Although there has been intensive technical development, roadheaders are still manually controlled. Manual control does not allow optimizing the values of the cutting process parameters, which often results in low mining efficiency, especially in the case of hard rocks, as well as high energy consumption and significant dynamic overloading of the roadheader. As part of theoretical and experimental research, an automatic control system was designed for the boom-type roadheader and an algorithm was developed for the optimal control of the cutting process parameters. Control criteria have been formulated, based on which the current values of the cutting process parameters are worked out using the information on the dynamic load state of the roadheader. The paper presents selected results of numerical tests conducted on r... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combined arrangement, geothermal heat exchangers, operation analysis
Geothermal heat exchangers (GHEs) represent a buried pipe system, which can be utilised to harness renewable thermal energy stored in the ground to improve the efficiency of heating and cooling systems. Two basic arrangements of GHEs have been widely used: vertical and horizontal. Vertical GHEs generally have a better performance in comparison with the horizontal arrangement, and these systems are particularly suitable for confined spaces. Nevertheless, the main technical challenge associated with GHEs, for either the vertical or the horizontal arrangement, is the performance deterioration associated with an increase in the operation times during summer or winter seasons. In this paper, a combined horizontal-vertical GHE arrangement is proposed to address the current challenges. The combined GHE arrangement can be operated in five different modes, corresponding to different thermal loading conditions. These five operation modes of the combined GHE are analysed based on the transient fi... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: anode modification, electrode materials, exoelectrogens, microbial community, microbial fuel cells, nanomaterials, Polymers
Sustainable production of electricity from renewable sources by microorganisms is considered an attractive alternative to energy production from fossil fuels. In recent years, research on microbial fuel cells (MFCs) technology for electricity production has increased. However, there are problems with up-scaling MFCs due to the fairly low power output and high operational costs. One of the approaches to improving energy generation in MFCs is by modifying the existing anode materials to provide more electrochemically active sites and improve the adhesion of microorganisms. The aim of this review is to present the effect of anode modification with carbon compounds, metallic nanomaterials, and polymers and the effect that these modifications have on the structure of the microbiological community inhabiting the anode surface. This review summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of individual materials as well as possibilities for using them for environmentally friendly production of elec... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: industrial automation system, Model Predictive Control, PID controller
Advanced control approaches are essential for industrial processes to enhance system performance and increase the production rate. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is considered as one of the promising advanced control algorithms. It is suitable for several industrial applications for its ability to handle system constraints. However, it is not widely implemented in the industrial field as most field engineers are not familiar with the advanced techniques conceptual structure, the relation between the parameter settings and control system actions. Conversely, the Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller is a common industrial controller known for its simplicity and robustness. Adapting the parameters of the PID considering system constraints is a challenging task. Both controllers, MPC and PID, merged in a hierarchical structure in this work to improve the industrial processes performance considering the operational constraints. The proposed control system is simulated and imple... [more]

Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biogas, food waste, hydrochar, lactic acid, leachate
Biological treatments such as anaerobic digestion and composting are known to be the most widespread methods to deal with Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (OFMSW). The production of biogas, a mix of methane and carbon dioxide, is worth but alone cannot solve the problems of waste disposal and recovery; moreover, the digestate could be stabilized by aerobic stabilization, which is one of the most widespread methods. The anaerobic digestion + composting integration converts 10% to 14% of the OFMSW into biogas, about 35−40% into compost and 35−40% into leachate. The economic sustainability could be rather increased by integrating the whole system with lactic acid production, because of the high added value and by substituting the composting process with the hydrothermal carbonization process. The assessment of this integrated scenario in term of mass balance demonstrates that the recovery of useful products with a potentially high economic added value increases, at the same time... [more]

Keywords: Polish energy, profitability, purchasing group, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Purchasing groups are multi-entity organisations that operate in practically every sector. Their greatest role is to improve the financial situation of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). In the case of enterprises operating in the sectors that are just developing, especially those belonging to SMEs, it is particularly difficult to obtain favourable financial results. In Poland, such sectors include, among others, renewable energy, which is slowly developing, but has not yet reached the size set in climate policy. The purpose of the paper is to present how functioning under group purchasing organisations (GPOs) affects the profitability of companies related to the renewable energy sector. For the example of the largest industry purchasing groups, the analysis showed that high profitability results were achieved by enterprises operating in them compared to entities operating independently in the market. In total, 71 enterprises operating in the sector related to the renewable energy se... [more]

With the development of society, the energy crisis has become increasingly prominent, which greatly affects the sustainable development of the economy of various countries. Industrial energy consumption accounts for more than 70% of China’s total energy consumption, of which more than 50% is converted to industrial waste heat, and recyclable waste heat resources account for about 60% of the total waste heat resources, while China’s current utilization rate of industrial waste heat only reaches about 30%. The development of renewable energy and recovery of low-grade waste heat in industry is the key to solve the problem. As a type of volumetric expander with full flow expansion, the screw expander is extensively applied in the industrial waste heat recovery and geothermal energy generation industry because of its effective utilization of low enthalpy energy. Improving the performance of the screw expander as the core, the paper concludes and summarizes the research status of the leakage... [more]
