April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: averaged model, DC-DC converter, electrothermal model, IGBT, power electronics, SPICE
In the design of modern power electronics converters, especially DC-DC converters, circuit-level computer simulations play an important role. This article analyses the accuracy of computations of the boost converter characteristics in the steady state using an electrothermal averaged model of a diode−transistor switch containing an Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) and a rapid switching diode. This model has a form of a subcircuit for SPICE (Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis). The influence of such factors as the switching frequency of the transistor, the duty cycle of the signal controlling the transistor, the input voltage, and the output current of the boost converter on the accuracy of computing the converter output voltage and junction temperature of the IGBT and the diode were analysed. The correctness of the computation results was verified experimentally. Based on the performed computations and measurements, the usefulness range of the model under consi... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: Fault Detection, fault index, inter-turn short-circuits, permanent magnet synchronous motor, scalar control, vector control
Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) failures are currently widely discussed in the literature, but the impact of these failures on the operation of control systems and the ability to detect selected failures despite the compensating effect of control algorithms being relatively rarely analyzed. The article presents the impact of damage to the stator winding of a PMSM motor on the operation of two frequency control structures, scalar and vector control. The mathematical model of PMSM that takes into account the influence of a different number of shorted turns in the stator winding phase was presented, and its experimental verification was performed. Then, the influence of various degrees of damage to the stator winding on the waveforms of the motor state variables in an open scalar control structure and in a closed field-oriented control structure was analyzed. Based on the analysis of phase currents and rotational speed of the motor as well as the influence of the PMSM motor oper... [more]

Keywords: cost–benefit analysis, Energy Efficiency, energy efficiency gap, energy services, transaction costs
In order to calculate the financial return of energy efficiency measures, a cost−benefit analysis (CBA) is a proven tool for investors. Generally, however, most CBAs for investors have a narrow focus, which is—simply speaking—on investment costs compared with energy cost savings over the life span of the investment. This only provides part of the full picture. Ideally, a comprehensive or extended CBA would take additional benefits as well as additional costs into account. The objective of this paper is to reflect upon integrating into a CBA two important cost components: transaction costs and energy efficiency services—and how they interact. Even though this concept has not been carried out to the knowledge of the authors, we even go a step further to try to apply this idea. In so doing, we carried out a meta-analysis on relevant literature and existing data and interviewed a limited number of energy experts with comprehensive experience in carrying out energy services. Even though dat... [more]

Keywords: low cost digester, psychrophilic anaerobic digestion, thermal behavior
Most biogas plants in the world run under psychrophilic conditions and are operated by small and medium farmers. There is a gap of knowledge on the performance of these systems after several years of operation. The aim of this research is to provide a complete evaluation of a psychrophilic, low-cost, tubular digester operated for eight years. The thermal performance was monitored for 50 days, and parameters such as pH, total volatile fatty acid (tVFA), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and volatile solids (VS) were measured every week for the influent and effluent. The digester operated at a stabilized slurry temperature of around 17.7 °C, with a mean organic load rate (OLR) equal to 0.52 kg VS/m3digester *d and an estimated hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 25 days. The VS reduction in the digester was around 77.58% and the COD reduction was 67 ± 3%, with a mean value for the effluent of 3.31 ± 1.20 g COD/Lt, while the tVFA decreased by 83.6 ± 15.5% and the presence of coliforms decreased... April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: clustering analysis, index, power quality, voltage sag
This paper proposes a methodology for establishing base values for short-term voltage variation indices. The work is focused on determining which variables best describe the disturbance and based on that, establish clusters that allow a more adequate definition of base values for the indices. To test the proposed methodology, real data from 19 distribution systems belonging to a Brazilian electricity utility were used and consequently the index presented in the country standard was considered. This study presents a general methodology that can be applied to all distribution systems in Brazil and could serve as a guide for the regulatory agencies in other countries, to establish base values for their indices. Furthermore, the objective is to show through the results that, with the database used is possible to establish clusters of distribution systems related to the voltage sag and with these establish a base impact factor, distinct for each distribution system.

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: biogas, excess dairy sewage sludge, low-temperature conditioning, methane fermentation, process optimization, solidified carbon dioxide
This study aimed to determine the effect of the low-temperature conditioning of excess dairy sewage sludge using solidified carbon dioxide on the efficiency of methane fermentation. An increase in the solidified carbon dioxide to excess dairy sewage sludge volumetric ratio above 0.3 had no significant effect on chemical oxygen demand concentration in the dissolved phase. The highest chemical oxygen demand values, ranging from 490.6 ± 12.9 to 510.5 ± 28.5 mg·dm−3, were determined at solidified carbon dioxide to excess dairy sewage sludge ratio ranging from 0.3 to 0.5. The low-temperature conditioning caused ammonia nitrogen concentration to increase from 155.2 ± 10.2 to 185.9 ± 11.1 mg·dm−3 and orthophosphates concentration to increase from 198.5 ± 23.1 to 300.6 ± 35.9 mg·dm−3 in the dissolved phase. The highest unitary amount of biogas, reaching 630.2 ± 45.5 cm3·g o.d.m.−1, was produced in the variant with the solidified carbon dioxide to excess dairy sewage sludge volumetric ratio of... [more]

Keywords: cellular computational networks, contingency, fuzzy system, load flow prediction, situation awareness, steady-state security assessment
Power system steady-state security relates to its robustness under a normal state as well as to withstanding foreseeable contingencies without interruption to customer service. In this study, a novel cellular computation network (CCN) and hierarchical cellular rule-based fuzzy system (HCRFS) based online situation awareness method regarding steady-state security was proposed. A CCN-based two-layer mechanism was applied for voltage and active power flow prediction. HCRFS block was applied after the CCN prediction block to generate the security level of the power system. The security status of the power system was visualized online through a geographic two-dimensional visualization mechanism for voltage magnitude and load flow. In order to test the performance of the proposed method, three types of neural networks were embedded in CCN cells successively to analyze the characteristics of the proposed methodology under white noise simulated small disturbance and single contingency. A Time Series Sustainability Assessment of a Partial Energy Portfolio Transition
Jacob Hale, Suzanna Long
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: energy transition, life cycle thinking, Sustainability, time series forecast
Energy portfolios are overwhelmingly dependent on fossil fuel resources that perpetuate the consequences associated with climate change. Therefore, it is imperative to transition to more renewable alternatives to limit further harm to the environment. This study presents a univariate time series prediction model that evaluates sustainability outcomes of partial energy transitions. Future electricity generation at the state-level is predicted using exponential smoothing and autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA). The best prediction results are then used as an input for a sustainability assessment of a proposed transition by calculating carbon, water, land, and cost footprints. Missouri, USA was selected as a model testbed due to its dependence on coal. Of the time series methods, ARIMA exhibited the best performance and was used to predict annual electricity generation over a 10-year period. The proposed transition consisted of a one-percent annual decrease of coal’s portfoli... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: elastic light scattering, flame temperature, fuel additives, laser-induced incandescence, pre-vaporized diesel combustion
Emissions from diesel engines can be limited and potentially decreased by modifying the fuel chemical composition through additive insertion. One class of additives that have shown to be particularly efficient in the reduction of the particulates from the combustion of diesel fuels are oxygenated compounds. In the present study we investigate the effect of tripropylene glycol methyl ether (TPGME) and two polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (POMDME or OMEs) on soot formation in a laminar diesel diffusion flame. From the evaluation of soot volume fraction by laser-induced incandescence (LII) measurements we could observe that OME additives have a substantial capability (higher compared to TPGME) to decrease the particle concentration, which drops by up to 36% with respect to the pure diesel fuel. We also note a reduction in particle aggregate size, determined by wide-angle light scattering (WALS) measurements, which is more pronounced in the case of OME−diesel blends. The effects we observe... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: evolutionary algorithm, Korea offshore, metamodel, offshore wind farm layout optimization, park wake model, Particle Swarm Optimization
This paper examines the solution to the problem of turbine arrangement in offshore wind farms. The two main objectives of offshore wind farm planning are to minimize wake loss and maximize annual energy production (AEP). There is more wind with less turbulence offshore compared with an onshore case, which drives the development of the offshore wind farm worldwide. South Korea’s offshore wind farms, which are deep in water and cannot be installed far off the coast, are affected by land complex terrain. Thus, domestic offshore wind farms should consider the separation distance from the coastline as a major variable depending on the topography and marine environmental characteristics. As a case study, a 60 MW offshore wind farm was optimized for the coast of the Busan Metropolitan City. For the analysis of wind conditions in the candidate site, wind conditions data from the meteorological tower and Ganjeolgot AWS at Gori offshore were used from 2001 to 2018. The optimization procedure is... [more]

Keywords: evaporative cooling, heat and mass transfer, PV performance, solar, temperature
Solar photovoltaic (PV) applications are gaining a great interest worldwide and dominating the renewable energy sector. However, the solar PV panels’ performance is reduced significantly with the increase in their operating temperature, resulting in a substantial loss of energy production and poor economic scenarios. This research contributes to overcoming the PV performance degradation due to the temperature rise. This work involves experimental and theoretical studies on cooling of PV panels using the evaporative cooling (EC) principle. A new EC design to cool the bottom surface of a PV panel was proposed, fabricated, tested, and modeled. A series of experimentation readings under real conditions showed the effectiveness of the method. A steady state heat and mass transfer model was implemented and compared with the experimental data. Fair agreement between the results of the modelling and experimental work was observed. It was found that the temperature of the PV panel can be decrea... [more]

Keywords: heat pump integration, Modified Energy Transfer Diagram, Pinch Analysis, retrofit
Heat pumps are the key technology to decarbonise thermal processes by upgrading industrial surplus heat using renewable electricity. Existing insight-based integration methods refer to the idealised Grand Composite Curve requiring the full exploitation of heat recovery potential but leave the question of how to deal with technical or economic limitations unanswered. In this work, a novel Heat Pump Bridge Analysis (HPBA) is introduced for practically targeting technical and economic heat pump potential by applying Coefficient of Performance curves into the Modified Energy Transfer Diagram (METD). Removing cross-Pinch violations and operating heat exchangers at minimum approach temperatures by combined application of Bridge Analysis increases the heat recovery rate and reduce the temperature lift to be pumped at the same time. The insight-based METD allows the individual matching of heat surpluses and deficits of individual streams with the capabilities and performance of different marke... [more]

Keywords: automotive industry, efficiency, electric vehicles, fuel cell, Optimization
This review critically evaluates the latest trends in fuel cell development for portable and stationary fuel cell applications and their integration into the automotive industry. Fast start-up, high efficiency, no toxic emissions into the atmosphere and good modularity are the key advantages of fuel cell applications. Despite the merits associated with fuel cells, the high cost of the technology remains a key factor impeding its widespread commercialization. Therefore, this review presents detailed information into the best operating conditions that yield maximum fuel cell performance. The paper recommends future research geared towards robust fuel cell geometry designs, as this determines the cell losses, and material characterization of the various cell components. When this is done properly, it will support a total reduction in the cost of the cell which in effect will reduce the total cost of the system. Despite the strides made by the fuel cell research community, there is a need... [more]

Keywords: electric vehicles, energy management system, microgrid, networked microgrids, resilience, resilience enhancement
The increased intensity and frequency of natural disasters have attracted the attention of researchers in the power sector to enhance the resilience of power systems. Microgrids are considered as a potential solution to enhance the resilience of power systems using local resources, such as renewable energy sources, electric vehicles (EV), and energy storage systems. However, the deployment of an additional storage system for resilience can increase the investment cost. Therefore, in this study, the usage of existing EVs in microgrids is proposed as a solution to increase the resilience of microgrids with outages without the need for additional investment. In the case of contingencies, the proposed algorithm supplies energy to islanded microgrids from grid-connected microgrids by using mobile EVs. The process for the selection of EVs for supplying energy to islanded microgrids is carried out in three steps. Firstly, islanded and networked microgrids inform the central energy management... April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: grid-connected inverter, Lyapunov stability, nonlinear controller, proportional resonant control
This paper proposes a high-performance control technique based on Lyapunov’s stability theory for a single-phase grid-connected neutral-point-clamped quasi-impedance source inverter with LCL filter. The Lyapunov function based control is employed to regulate the inverter output current, whereas the proportional resonant controller is used to produce the reference of the inverter output current that is needed in the Lyapunov function based control. Use of proportional resonant controller ensures the zero steady-state error in the grid current. An important feature of the proposed Lyapunov function based control is the achievement of resonance damping without using a dedicated damping method. Furthermore, the modified simple boost control technique is proposed to eliminate the double-line frequency ripples in the quasi-impedance source inductor currents and minimize the double-line frequency ripples in the quasi-impedance source capacitor voltages. The proposed control technique consider... [more]

Keywords: clustering, consumer categorization, feature construction, load duration curve, load profiling, peak demand
This paper proposes a novel feature construction methodology aiming at both clustering yearly load profiles of low-voltage consumers, as well as investigating the stochastic nature of their peak demands. These load profiles describe the electricity consumption over a one-year period, allowing the study of seasonal dependence. The clustering of load curves has been extensively studied in literature, where clustering of daily or weekly load curves based on temporal features has received the most research attention. The proposed feature construction aims at generating a new set of variables that can be used in machine learning applications, stepping away from traditional, high dimensional, chronological feature sets. This paper presents a novel feature set based on two types of features: respectively the consumption time window on a daily and weekly basis, and the time of occurrence of peak demands. An analytic expression for the load duration curve is validated and leveraged in order to... [more]

Keywords: building energy management system, occupant behavior, Particle Swarm Optimization, passive cooling
The common approach to model occupants behaviors in buildings is deterministic and consists of assumptions based on predefined fixed schedules or rules. In contrast with the deterministic models, stochastic and agent based (AB) models are the most powerful and suitable methods for modeling complex systems as the human behavior. In this paper, a co-simulation architecture is proposed with the aim of modeling the occupant behavior in buildings by a stochastic-AB approach and implementing an intelligent Building Energy Management System (BEMS). In particular, optimized control logics are designed for smart passive cooling by controlling natural ventilation and solar shading systems to guarantee the thermal comfort conditions and maintain energy performance. Moreover, the effects of occupant actions on indoor thermal comfort are also taken into account. This study shows how the integration of automation systems and passive techniques increases the potentialities of passive cooling in build... [more]
3D Electromagnetic Field Analysis Applied to Evaluate the Accuracy of a Voltage Transformer under Distorted Voltage

Subject: Other
Keywords: distorted voltage, finite element method, voltage transformers
Voltage transformers (VTs) are an important element of the measuring system that allows measuring the energy flow in medium and high voltage networks. Additional problems with the accuracy of the measurement introduced by the appearance of sources and nonlinear receivers cause deformation of the voltage shape in the energy system. Due to the high metrological requirements, the design of voltage transformers requires high accuracy (for class 0.2 ΔU ≤ 0.2, phase displacement ≤10 min), which is not possible with the use of analytical methods using approximate models. Therefore, only the application of numerical modeling by the finite element method, taking into account real three-dimensional phenomena, allows achieving high modeling accuracy. The article concerns the phenomenon of the influence of voltage higher harmonics of supply voltage on the accuracy (up to the 100th harmonic) of the measuring inductive voltage transformer (IVT). The applied modeling method takes into account the phe... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: aspect ratio, contact stress, diffusion induced stress, electrochemical-mechanical modelling, Li-ion battery, shape factor
Electrochemical-mechanical modelling is a key issue to estimate the damage of active material, as direct measurements cannot be performed due to the particles nanoscale. The aim of this paper is to overcome the common assumptions of spherical and standalone particle, proposing a general approach that considers a parametrized particle shape and studying its influence on the mechanical stresses which arise in active material particles during battery operation. The shape considered is a set of ellipsoids with variable aspect ratio (elongation), which aims to approximate real active material particles. Active material particle is divided in two domains: non-contact domain and contact domain, whether contact with neighbouring particles affects stress distribution or not. Non-contact areas are affected by diffusion stress, caused by lithium concentration gradient inside particles. Contact areas are affected simultaneously by diffusion stress and contact stress, caused by contact with neighbo... [more]

The paper is related to the problem of modeling and optimizing power systems supplying, among others, nonlinear loads. A software solution that allows the modeling and simulation of power systems in the frequency domain as well as the sizing and allocation of active power filters has been developed and presented. The basic assumptions for the software development followed by the models of power system components and the optimization assumptions have been described in the paper. On the basis of an example of a low-voltage network, an analysis of the selection of the number and allocation of active power filters was carried out in terms of minimizing losses and investment costs under the assumed conditions for voltage total harmonic distortion (THD) coefficients in the network nodes. The presented examples show that the appropriate software allows for an in-depth analysis of possible solutions and, furthermore, the selection of the optimal one for a specific case, depending on the adopte... The present study evaluates the potential upgrade of a Linear Fresnel Reflector (LFR) collector at the Cyprus Institute (CyI) with photovoltaics via the calculation of the Levelized Cost Of Heat (LCOH). For over 4 years the collector has been supplying heating and cooling to the Novel Technologies Laboratory (NTL) of the Cyprus Institute (CyI). Extensive measurements have been carried out both on the LFR and NTL to render real numbers in the computations. This hybridization would be undertaken with the installation of PV arrays under mirrors, so that the collector is able to either reflect direct radiation to the receiver to process heat or to produce electricity directly in the built environment. The main objective is the decrease of the LCOH of Linear Fresnel collectors, which hinders their wider deployment, while air conditioning demand is globally booming. The results show that the LCOH for a small LFR to supply air conditioning is high, c€25.2−30.1 per kWh, while the innovative PV... [more]

Keywords: distributed generation, inverter-based generation, islanding detection, microgrid, non-detection zone, point of DG connection, VoI index
This article proposes a new passive islanding detection technique for inverter-based distributed generation (DG) in microgrids based on local synchrophasor measurements. The proposed method utilizes the voltage and current phasors measured at the DG connection point (point of connection, PoC). In this paper, the rate of change of voltages and the ratio of the voltage and current magnitudes (VoI index) at the PoC are monitored using micro-phasor measurement units. The developed local measurements based decentralized islanding detection technique is based on the VoI index in order to detect any kind of utility grid frequency fluctuations or oscillations and distinguishing them from islanding condition. The simulation studies confirm that the proposed scheme is accurate, robust, fast, and simple to implement for inverter-based DGs.
