Numerical Study on Sectional Loads and Structural Optimization of an Elastic Semi-Submersible Floating Platform
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: dynamic response, elastic model, sectional loads, semi-submersible floating platform, structural optimization
This study investigates the sectional loads on an elastic semi-submersible platform for a 2 MW FOWT (floating offshore wind turbine) used in the Fukushima demonstration project. A water tank test is firstly carried out with an elastic model to study the dynamic responses and sectional loads of the platform in regular and irregular waves. Numerical simulations are then performed using multiple hydrodynamic bodies connected by elastic beams. The dynamic responses of the elastic model are compared to those of a rigid model to clarify the influence of the structural stiffness on the platform motion and mooring tension. The predicted sectional loads on the deck, brace and pontoon by the proposed nonlinear hydrodynamic models show good agreement with the experimental data obtained from the water tank test and a simplified formula is proposed to evaluate the distribution of the moments on the platform. Finally, the structural optimization of the elastic semi-submersible platform is conducted.... [more]

Four-Quadrant Operations of Bidirectional Chargers for Electric Vehicles in Smart Car Parks: G2V, V2G, and V4G
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bidirectional two-stage charger, electric vehicle, Model Predictive Control
This paper presents the four-quadrant operation modes of bidirectional chargers for electric vehicles (EVs) framed in smart car parks. A cascaded model predictive control (MPC) scheme for the bidirectional two-stage off-board chargers is proposed. The controller is constructed in two stages. The model predictive direct power control for the grid side is applied to track the active/reactive power references. The model predictive direct current control is proposed to achieve constant current charging/discharging for the EV load side. With this MPC strategy, EV chargers are able to transmit the active and reactive powers between the EV batteries and the power grid. Apart from exchanging the active power, the vehicle-for-grid (V4G) mode is proposed, where the chargers are used to deliver the reactive power to support the grid, simultaneously combined with grid-to-vehicle or vehicle-to-grid operation modes. In the V4G mode, the EV battery functions as the static var compensator. According t... [more]

Experimental Determination of the Heat Transfer Coefficient of Real Cooled Geometry Using Linear Regression Method
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: internal heat transfer, IR thermography, real hardware, regression, thermal transient technique
The scope of this work was to develop a technique based on the regression method and apply it on a real cooled geometry for measuring its internal heat transfer distribution. The proposed methodology is based upon an already available literature approach. For implementation of the methodology, the geometry is initially heated to a known steady temperature, followed by thermal transient, induced by injection of ambient air to its internal cooling system. During the thermal transient, external surface temperature of the geometry is recorded with the help of infrared camera. Then, a numerical procedure based upon a series of transient finite element analyses of the geometry is applied by using the obtained experimental data. The total test duration is divided into time steps, during which the heat flux on the internal surface is iteratively updated to target the measured external surface temperature. The final procured heat flux and internal surface temperature data of each time step is u... [more]

Determining the Heat of Fusion and Specific Heat of Microencapsulated Phase Change Material Slurry by Thermal Delay Method
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: microencapsulation, PCM, specific heat, thermal delay method
This paper details an experimental study that was performed to investigate the specific heat of microencapsulated phase change material (mPCM) slurry and its heat of fusion at the PCM phase change transition temperature. Six samples (mPCM slurry concentrate with the water solution of propylene glycol used as a main base liquid) were prepared. As the concentrate contains 43.0% mPCM, the actual mass fraction amounts to 8.6, 12.9, 17.2, 21.5, 25.8, and 30.1 wt%, respectively. The thermal delay method was used. Samples were cooled from 50 °C to 10 °C. A higher concentration of microcapsules caused a proportional increase in the specific heat of slurry at the main peak melting temperature. The maximum value of the specific heat changed from 9.2 to 33.7 kJ/kg for 8.6 wt%, and 30.1 wt%, respectively. The specific heat of the mPCM slurry is a constant quantity and depends on the concentration of the microcapsules. The specific heat of the slurry (PCM inside microcapsules in a liquid form) decr... Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Energy Storage, flow battery, flow field, numerical model, vanadium, vanadium redox flow battery, VRFB
Large-scale energy storage systems (ESS) are nowadays growing in popularity due to the increase in the energy production by renewable energy sources, which in general have a random intermittent nature. Currently, several redox flow batteries have been presented as an alternative of the classical ESS; the scalability, design flexibility and long life cycle of the vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) have made it to stand out. In a VRFB cell, which consists of two electrodes and an ion exchange membrane, the electrolyte flows through the electrodes where the electrochemical reactions take place. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations are a very powerful tool to develop feasible numerical models to enhance the performance and lifetime of VRFBs. This review aims to present and discuss the numerical models developed in this field and, particularly, to analyze different types of flow fields and patterns that can be found in the literature. Mathematical Modeling and Experimental Verification of a New Wave Energy Converter
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: horizontal axis rotor, model experiment, water movement, Wave Energy
As traditional energy sources are increasingly depleting, ocean energy has become an emergent potential clean energy source. Wave energy, as an important part of ocean-derived energy, has been studied and utilized by coastal countries worldwide, which have developed various wave energy converters. In this paper, a new wave energy converter is designed, and water movement in fluid channels is analyzed. The results are, then, used to generate a mathematical model that simulates water movement. Based on this approach, the water movement state is analyzed, and a formula for calculating the natural frequency of water movement in the power generator is derived. The formula shows that the characteristic length of the water movement in the proposed generator and the backboard tilt angle at the exit point of the fluid channel are two design-related variables that can be used to alter the natural frequency; a regular wave experiment is conducted based on the fluid model, which is designed based... Analytical Determination of the Slot and the End-Winding Portion of the Winding-to-Rotor Capacitance for the Prediction of Shaft Voltage in Electrical Machines
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: EDM currents, shaft voltage, traction motor, winding-to-rotor capacitance
Common-mode voltage, caused by a 2-level inverter, is a source of discharge currents in motor bearings. Due to the capacitive coupling, between the stator winding and the rotor, an image of the common-mode voltage is produced on the shaft—which can exceed the dielectric strength of the lubrication film of motor bearings. Accurate determination of the winding-to-rotor capacitance is necessary to predict the shaft voltage. This article proposes a novel analytical determination of the slot and the end-winding portion of the winding-to-rotor capacitance. The calculation rules, which are based on the method of image charges and the charge simulation method, take into account the continuity and the boundary conditions of the field areas. Results are validated by means of finite element method simulations. Notably, deviations are in the single-digit percentage range. Furthermore, the presented methods are simple to implement.

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: boost converter, D-decomposition technique, Genetic Algorithm, PI voltage compensator
In this paper the D-decomposition technique is investigated as a source of non-linear boundaries used with the Genetic Algorithm (GA) search of a PI voltage compensator gains of the boost converter operating in Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM). The well known and appreciated boost converter has been chosen as a test object due to its right-half plane zero in the control-to-output (c2o) voltage transfer function. The D-decomposition, as a technique relying on the frequency sweeping, clearly indicates not only the global stability but, in its extended version, regions satisfying the required gain (GM) and phase (PM) margins. Such results are in form of easy to interpret functions KI=f(KP). The functions are easy to convert to the GA constraints. The GA search, with three different performance indexes as the fitness functions, is applied to a control structure with time delays basing on identified c2o voltage transfer functions. The demand for electricity is increased due to the development of the industry, the electrification of transport, the rise of household demand, and the increase in demand for digitally connected devices and air conditioning systems. For that, solutions and actions should be developed for greater consumers of electricity. For instance, MG (Micro-grid) buildings are one of the main consumers of electricity, and if they are correctly constructed, controlled, and operated, a significant energy saving can be attained. As a solution, hybrid RES (renewable energy source) systems are proposed, offering the possibility for simple consumers to be producers of electricity. This hybrid system contains different renewable generators connected to energy storage systems, making it possible to locally produce a part of energy in order to minimize the consumption from the utility grid. A Novel Moment of Inertia Identification Strategy for Permanent Magnet Motor System Based on Integral Chain Differentiator and Kalman Filter
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: integral chain differentiator, Kalman filter, moment of inertia, parameter identification, permanent magnet synchronous motor
In a motor control system, the parameters tuning of speed and position controller depend on the value of the moment of inertia. A new moment of inertia identification scheme for permanent magnet motor system was proposed in this paper. This is an extension of the existing acceleration deceleration methods, which solves the large moment of inertia identification error caused by variable angular acceleration, large calculation error of inertia torque, and large measurement noise in the acceleration process. Based on the fact that the angular acceleration is not constant and the sampling signal is noisy, the integral chain differentiator was used to calculate the instantaneous angular acceleration at any time and suppress the sampling signal noise at the same time. The error function with instantaneous angular acceleration and inertia torque as parameters was designed to estimate the moment of inertia. In order to calculate the inertia torque accurately, viscous friction torque was consid... [more]

A Study of the Electrical Output and Reliability Characteristics of the Crystalline Photovoltaic Module According to the Front Materials
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: c-Si photovoltaic module, ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene (ECTFE) film, ethylene tetra fluoro-ethylene (ETFE) film, lightweight PV module, reliability, ultra-barrier film
In recent years, various types of installations such as floating photovoltaic (PV) and agri-voltaic systems, and BIPV (building integrated photovoltaic system) have been implemented in PV systems and, accordingly, there is a growing demand for new PV designs and materials. In particular, in order to install a PV module in a building, it is important to reduce the weight of the module. The PV module in which low-iron, tempered glass is applied to the front surface, which is generally used, has excellent electrical output and reliability characteristics; however, it is heavy. In order to reduce the weight of the PV module, it is necessary to use a film or plastic-based material, as opposed to low-iron, tempered glass, on the front surface. However, if a material other than glass is used on the front of the PV module, various problems such as reduced electrical output and reduced reliability may occur. Therefore, in this paper, a PV module using a film instead of glass as the front surfac... [more]

The Polish Practice of Probabilistic Approach in Power System Development Planning
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: development planning, power system, probabilistic power flow
Power systems can be analyzed using either a deterministic or a probabilistic approach. The deterministic analysis centers on studying the quantities and indicators that characterize the operating states of the power system under strictly defined conditions. However, the long-term horizon of planning analyses, the changes of marketing mechanisms, the development of renewable electricity sources, the leaving from large-scale generation, the growth of smart technology and the increase in consumer awareness make the development of transmission networks a non-deterministic problem. In this article, we propose a planning procedure that takes the probabilistic elements into account. This procedure was developed to take into account the high variability of power flows caused by the generation of renewable sources and international exchange. Such conditions of the power system operation forced a departure from deterministic planning. The new probabilistic approach uses the existing tools and e... [more]

Water-Energy-Nutrients Synergies in the Agrifood Sector: A Circular Economy Framework
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: agricultural waste, agrifood sector, bioeconomy, bioenergy, biofertilizers, circular economy, resource management, Wastewater, water reuse
Circular economy is emerging as a regenerative concept that minimizes emissions, relies on renewable energy, and eliminates waste based on the design of closed-loop systems and the reuse of materials and resources. The implementation of circular economy practices in resource-consuming agricultural systems is essential for reducing the environmental ramifications of the currently linear systems. Subject: Optimization
Keywords: design optimization, numerical analysis, selective catalytic reduction, uniformity index, urea injector design
The uniformity of ammonia is very crucial for reducing the NOX emissions in a selective catalytic reduction system since the uniformity highly affects the chemical reaction between the ammonia and NOX emission. However, increasing ammonia uniformity in a short time period while injecting a urea solution is not a trivial task. Therefore, in this study, the uniformity of various urea injector designs is compared and an optimal design for the urea injector angle and direction is selected. The uniformity index (UI) was calculated using numerical analysis and compared with experimental result to achieve high reliability. The boundary condition of the analysis is extracted from the dominant operating region of the non-road transient cycle (NRTC) to guarantee a realistic analysis result. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: icing on wind turbines, Machine Learning, probabilistic forecasting, wind energy
A probabilistic machine learning method is applied to icing related production loss forecasts for wind energy in cold climates. The employed method, called quantile regression forests, is based on the random forest regression algorithm. Based on the performed tests on data from four Swedish wind parks available for two winter seasons, it has been shown to produce valuable probabilistic forecasts. Even with the limited amount of training and test data that were used in the study, the estimated forecast uncertainty adds more value to the forecast when compared to a deterministic forecast and a previously published probabilistic forecast method. It is also shown that the output from a physical icing model provides useful information to the machine learning method, as its usage results in an increased forecast skill when compared to only using Numerical Weather Prediction data. A potential additional benefit in machine learning for some stations was also found when using information in the... [more]
