An Active Equalization Method for Lithium-ion Batteries Based on Flyback Transformer and Variable Step Size Generalized Predictive Control
Jianwen Cao, Bizhong Xia, Jie Zhou
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery equalization, electric vehicle, flyback transformer, Step Size Factor, variable step size generalized predictive control
The inconsistency in large-scale battery pack significantly degrades the performance of electric vehicles. In order to diminish the inconsistency, the study designs an active equalization method comprising of equalizer and equalization strategy for lithium-ion batteries. A bidirectional flyback transformer equalizer (BFTE) is designed and analyzed. The BFTE is controlled by a pulse width modulation (PWM) controller to output designated balancing currents. Under the purpose of shortening equalization time and reducing energy consumption during the equalization process, this paper proposes an equalization strategy based on variable step size generalized predictive control (VSSGPC). The VSSGPC is improved on the generalized predictive control (GPC) by introducing the Step Size Factor. The VSSGPC surmounts the local limitation of GPC by expanding the control and output horizons to the global equalization process without increasing computation owing to the Step Size Factor. The experiment r... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: alkaline fuel cell, carbonated soft drinks, juice drinks, power density
Sugar has the potential to create enough energy to power mobile electronics. Various sugar-powered fuel cells have been reported, however, most of them used pure glucose as substrate and enzymes/noble metals as catalysts. In this work, an alkaline fuel cell with cheap catalysts were constructed, and different sweet drinks were used as fuels for power generation. The influence of different substrates on the electrochemical performance was characterized under the controlled conditions. Our experimental results showed that the fuel cell fueled with carbonated soft drinks had the best performance under the conditions of 99.95 g/L chemical oxygen demand and 3M KOH. The power densities of the fuel cell fueled with different substrates decreased in the order of Pepsi (33.41 W/m2) > Sprite (28.38 W/m2) > apple juice (20.63 W/m2) > Coca (16.31 W/m2) > pear juice (15.31 W/m2) > orange juice (12.75 W/m2), which was consistent with linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and electrochemical impedance spect... April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: algorithm, artificial lighting system, demand side management, energy flexibility, greenhouse, natural lighting, Optimization, predictive control
Artificial lighting systems are used in commercial greenhouses to ensure year-round yields. Current Light Emitting Diode (LED) technologies improved the system efficiency. Nevertheless, having artificial lighting systems extended for hectares with power densities over 50W/m2 causes energy and power demand of greenhouses to be really significant. The present paper introduces an innovative supervisory and predictive control strategy to optimize the energy performance of the artificial lights of greenhouses. The controller has been implemented in a multi-span plastic greenhouse located in North Italy. The proposed control strategy has been tested on a greenhouse of 1 hectare with a lighting system with a nominal power density of 50 Wm−2 requiring an overall power supply of 1 MW for a period of 80 days. The results have been compared with the data coming from another greenhouse of 1 hectare in the same conditions implementing a state-of-the-art strategy for artificial lighting control. Res... [more]

Liviu Neamt, Alina Neamt, Olivian Chiver
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrical fault detection, electrical safety, power distribution, power grids
The difficulties and uncertainties related to earth fault loop impedance measurement are addressed in this paper. Based on the presentation of the measurement procedure implemented in the test equipment (diagrams and measured quantities, respectively, interpretation of results), the shortcomings and errors that accompany it are highlighted. The position in the power system, the influence of power transformers, and the use of effective quantities instead of phasors are important sources of errors, but, as will be seen, the switching of loads at the consumer sides and/or the occurrence of fault regimes during measurements can lead to the most serious impairment of the accuracy in the impedance assessment. The clarification of these aspects is achieved, both starting from the equivalent diagrams of the measurement circuits and the analytical interpretation of the phenomena associated with the measurements, as well as based on the modeling and simulation of TN low-voltage electrical distri... Faisal Albatati, Alaa Attar
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy balance of thermoelectric generator, thermal design of thermoelectric system, waste heat recovery system
Nearly 70% of the energy produced from automotive engines is released to the atmosphere in the form of waste energy. The recovery of this energy represents a vital challenge to engine designers primarily when a thermoelectric generator (TEG) is used, where the availability of a continuous, steady-state temperature and heat flow is essential. The potential of semi-truck engines presents an attractive application as many coaches and trucks are roaming motorways at steady-state conditions most of the time. This study presents an analytical thermal design and an experimental validation of the TEG system for waste heat recovery from the exhaust of semi-truck engines. The TEG system parameters were optimized to achieve the maximum power output. Experimental work was conducted on a specially constructed setup to validate the analytically obtained results. Both analytical and experimental results were found to be in good agreement with a marginal deviation, indicating the excellent accuracy of... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: multinomial logit model, P&amp, park &amp, R facility usage, R users’ behaviors, ride facility, road traffic engineering, road transport, surveying preferences, the analysis of P&amp
The basic function of the Park and Ride (P&R) facility is to allow users to leave their vehicle on the outskirts of the city and to continue their journey to the city center using means of public transport, e.g., bus, tram, trolleybus, subway, train, or bike. In the first part of the paper, an analysis of the selected factors related to the functioning of P&R facilities in Warsaw (Poland) was performed. The main purpose of this paper was to identify and quantify the influence factors determining the choice of P&R facility during a journey. This analysis was performed for three hypothetical journey scenarios. A list of potential factors determining the choice of P&R facility during travel was compiled after conducting previous research in this area and studying the worldwide scientific literature on the subject. The structural parameters of the multinomial logit model were estimated based on the data from the survey conducted in Warsaw. The results of the analyses indicate that the deci... [more]

Keywords: hydrothermal, perovskite, perovskite precursor purification, perovskite quantum dots, perovskite solar cells
In modern society, high-quality material development and a large stable supply are key to perform frontier research and development. However, there are negative issues to address to utilize high-quality resources with a large stable supply for research, such as economic accessibility, commercialization, and so on. One of the cutting-edge research fields, perovskite-related research, usually requires high-quality chemicals with outstanding purity (>99%). We developed an economically feasible PbI2 precursor with around 1/20 cost-down for perovskite/perovskite quantum dots through recrystallization and/or hydrothermal purification. Following the methodology, the quantum dots from both as-prepared and purified PbI2 demonstrated identical photophysical properties, with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 52.61% using the purified PbI2 vs. 45.83% PLQY using commercial PbI2. The role of hydrothermal energy was also checked against the problematic PbI2, and we checked whether the hydro... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: acoustic emission, joint strength mobilization, jointed rock masses, PFC
The joint arrangement in rock masses is the critical factor controlling the stability of rock structures in underground geotechnical engineering. In this study, the influence of the joint inclination angle on the mechanical behavior of jointed rock masses under uniaxial compression was investigated. Physical model laboratory experiments were conducted on jointed specimens with a single pre-existing flaw inclined at 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, and 90° and on intact specimens. The acoustic emission (AE) signals were monitored during the loading process, which revealed that there is a correlation between the AE characteristics and the failure modes of the jointed specimens with different inclination angles. In addition, particle flow code (PFC) modeling was carried out to reproduce the phenomena observed in the physical experiments. According to the numerical results, the AE phenomenon was basically the same as that observed in the physical experiments. The response of the pre-existing joint mainl... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AC-DC power converters, high power applications, low switching frequency, predictive control, solar power generation
Several control strategies have been proposed with the aim to get a desired behavior in the power converter variables. The most employed control techniques are linear control, nonlinear control based on linear and nonlinear feedback, and predictive control. The controllers associated with linear and nonlinear algorithms usually have a fixed switching frequency, featuring a defined spectrum given by the pulse width modulation (PWM) or space vector modulation (SVM) time period. On the other hand, finite set model predictive control (FS-MPC) is known to present a variable switching frequency that results too high for high power applications, increasing losses, reducing the switches lifetime and, therefore, limiting its application. This paper proposes a predictive control approach using a very low sampling frequency, allowing the use of predictive control in high power applications. The proposed method is straightforward to understand, is simple to implement, and can be computed with off-... [more]
Combining Radar and Optical Satellite Imagery with Machine Learning to Map Lava Flows at Mount Etna and Fogo Island
Claudia Corradino, Giuseppe Bilotta, Annalisa Cappello, Luigi Fortuna, Ciro Del Negro
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: lava flow mapping, machine learning classifier, optical data, synthetic aperture radar, volcano remote sensing
Lava flow mapping has direct relevance to volcanic hazards once an eruption has begun. Satellite remote sensing techniques are increasingly used to map newly erupted lava, thanks to their capability to survey large areas with frequent revisit time and accurate spatial resolution. Visible and infrared satellite data are routinely used to detect the distributions of volcanic deposits and monitor thermal features, even if clouds are a serious obstacle for optical sensors, since they cannot be penetrated by optical radiation. On the other hand, radar satellite data have been playing an important role in surface change detection and image classification, being able to operate in all weather conditions, although their use is hampered by the special imaging geometry, the complicated scattering process, and the presence of speckle noise. Thus, optical and radar data are complementary data sources that can be used to map lava flows effectively, in addition to alleviating cloud obstruction and i... [more]

Keywords: DFT, harmonic analysis, IEC/IEEE Standard 60255-118-1:2018, multiple-resonator, PMU, rate of change of frequency (ROCOF), recursive algorithm, total vector error (TVE)
This article deals with the implementation of the P-Class PMU compliant with IEC/IEEE Standard 60255-118-1:2018 by usage of a multiple-resonator (MR)-based approach for harmonic analysis having been proposed recently. In previously published articles, it has been shown that a trade-off between opposite requirements is possible by shifting a measurement time stamp along the filter window. Positioning the time stamp in a proximity of the time window center assures flat-top frequency responses. In this article, through simulation tests carried out under various conditions, it is shown that requirements of the IEC/IEEE Standard 60255-118-1:2018 can be satisfied by the second and third order MR structure for particular conditions of the time stamp location.
Different Scenarios for the National Transmission Grid, Considering the Extensive Use of On-Site Renewable Energy in the Mexican Housing Sector
Ivan Oropeza-Perez, Astrid H Petzold-Rodriguez
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: economical and environmental benefits, extensive use of on-site renewable-energy, national transmission and distribution grid
The Mexican national electricity transmission and distribution grid (SEN, initials in Spanish) is characterized by the high interconnection between its several electricity generation plants and the millions of final consumers throughout the country. This feature, which is seen first as an adequate transmission and distribution method for electricity between producer and consumer, has the inconvenience of being highly complex when renewable energy is introduced into the SEN. The random nature of renewable energy means that coordination between the producer and consumer is difficult; therefore, these energy sources are considered by the Mexican Federal Commission of Electricity (CFE, initials in Spanish) without priority in their generation and distribution. In this document, a solution for this is given by the consideration of on-site photovoltaic production in the Mexican residential sector, setting a straightforward relationship between production and consumption, neglecting the long-... Subject: Environment
Keywords: economic environmental dispatch, flexibility, gas network, gas storage, integrated power-natural gas-heat energy systems, power to gas (P2G)
The low carbon transition requires the high growth of renewable generation penetration in energy systems to ultimately achieve net-zero carbon target. To ensure the reliable operation of energy systems with high intermittent renewable output, it is critical to have sufficient flexible resources to avoid curtailment. Therefore, the integrated power-natural gas-heating energy systems with power to gas (P2G) and gas storage has attracted great research interest especially on the combined operation method to enhance the flexibility provision between each other. In this paper, taking heating demand, P2G and gas storage into consideration, a multi-objective optimal operation strategy of integrated power-natural gas-heating energy systems is presented to obtain the maximum economic and environmental benefits. Furthermore, a novel model of flexibility metric is proposed based on redundant linepack and gas storage. Case studies without P2G and with P2G are carried out on integrated IEEE 39-bus... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: HVAC, latent heat transfer, Modelica, phase change material, thermal energy storage
An abundance of research has been performed to understand the physics of latent thermal energy storage with phase change material. Some analytical and numerical findings have been validated by experiments, but there are few free and open-source models available to the general public for use in systems simulation and analysis. The Modelica programming language is a good avenue to make such models available, because it is object-oriented, equation-based, declarative, and acausal. These characteristics have enabling the creation of component model libraries that can be used to build larger system simulations for design analysis. The authors have previously developed a numerical framework to model phase change thermal storage and have validated model predictions with experiments. The objectives of this paper are to describe the transfer of the numerical framework to an implementation in a Modelica component model and to validate the Modelica model with data from the experiment and the orig... Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Energy Efficiency, forced ventilation, natural ventilation, timber construction, ventilated façade
Ventilated façades can help to reduce summer building thermal loads and, therefore, energy consumption due to air-conditioning systems thanks to the combined effect of the solar radiation reflection and the natural or forced ventilation into the cavity. The evaluation of ventilated façades behavior and performance is complex and requires a complete thermo-fluid dynamic analysis. In this study, a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) methodology has been developed for the complete assessment of the energy performance of a prefabricated timber−concrete composite ventilated façade module in different operating conditions. Global numerical results are presented as well as local ones in terms of heat flux, air velocity, and temperature inside the façade cavity. The results show the dependency of envelope efficiency on solar radiation, the benefits that natural convection brings on potential energy savings and the importance of designing an optimized façade geometry. The results concerning the f... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: five-phase machine, multi-phase machines, open-circuit fault-tolerant, permanent magnet machines
This paper presents a novel method to control sinusoidal distributed winding or sinusoidal back electromotive force (back-EMF) multi-phase permanent magnet (PM) machines under open-circuit fault conditions. In this study, five different fault conditions are considered: single-phase, adjacent double-phase, non-adjacent double-phase, adjacent three-phase, and non-adjacent three-phase open circuit conditions. New current sets for the remaining healthy phase under open-circuit fault conditions are obtained by compensating the direct-quadrature (d-q) axes currents. For this purpose, an iterative method has been used to get the new set of currents. D-q axes currents, due to faulty phase/phases, are shared to the healthy phases to obtain the same d-q axes currents as in the healthy condition. Therefore, the same torque is produced as in the healthy condition. The developed method is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink by using a d-q modelled sinusoidal back-EMF five-phase machine. A vector control b... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: ecology, economy, Energy, low carbon development, thermo-modernization
The excessive air pollution in the Lubuskie Voivodeship and throughout Poland is a very serious problem. One of the main causes of poor air quality is low emission, which arises at a short distance from the ground (up to 40 m). The real reduction of low emission requires a series of measures. The most important of them, include replacement of non-ecological boilers heating single-family buildings, improvement of thermal insulation of outer building walls, development of public transport, limiting the movement of old, non-ecological cars, conducting extensive educational activities, economic support for the poorest families in pro-ecological activities, and development of district heating in urban areas. The issue of thermal modernization is also important from the point of view of ensuring an appropriate level of energy security in the social dimension. The article presents a scenario analysis of activities aimed at reducing low emission through economic support for thermal modernizati... [more]
The Impact of Ambient Sensing on the Recognition of Electrical Appliances
Jana Huchtkoetter, Marcel Alwin Tepe, Andreas Reinhardt
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ambient influences, appliance load signatures, device classification accuracy
Smart spaces are characterized by their ability to capture a holistic picture of their contextual situation. This often includes the detection of the operative states of electrical appliances, which in turn allows for the recognition of user activities and intentions. For electrical appliances with largely different power consumption characteristics, their types and operational times can be easily inferred from data collected at a single metering point (typically, a smart meter). However, a disambiguation between consumers of the same type and model, yet located in different areas of a smart building, is not possible this way. Likewise, small consumers (e.g., wall chargers) are often indiscernible from measurement noise and spurious power consumption events of other appliances. As a consequence thereof, we investigate how additional sensing modalities, i.e., data beyond electrical signals, can be leveraged to improve the appliance detection accuracy. Through a set of practical experime... [more]

Keywords: energy management, levelized cost of electricity, microgrid, nature-inspired optimization algorithm, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, rural electrification
The present work investigates the techno-economic solution that can address the problem of rural electrification. To maintain a continuous power supply to this village area, a grid-connected microgrid system was designed that consists of solar photovoltaic (SPV) and battery energy storage systems (BESS). The recently introduced multi-strategy fusion artificial bee colony (MFABC) algorithm was hybridized with the simulated annealing approach and is referred to as the MFABC+ algorithm. This was employed to determine the optimal sizing of different components comprising the integrated system as well as to maximize the techno-economic objectives. For validation, the simulation results obtained by the MFABC+ algorithm are compared with the results obtained using HOMER software, the particle swarm optimization algorithms and the original MFABC algorithm. It was revealed that the MFABC+ algorithm has a better convergence rate and the potential ability to provide compromising results in compar... [more]

Keywords: air–steam gasification, Aspen Plus, Biomass, bubbling fluidised bed, sensitivity analysis
The gasification process involves several reactions that occur simultaneously and are interrelated by several independent variables. Simulation tools can help us to understand the process behaviour and predict the efficiency and final composition of the products. In this work, two thermodynamic equilibrium models developed in Aspen Plus® software were assessed: a non-stoichiometric model based on the feedstock composition and on the most probable compounds expected from the results of the gasification process using minimisation of Gibbs free energy and a stoichiometric model based on a set of chemical reactions considered as the most relevant to describe the gasification process. Both models were validated with experimental data from a bubbling fluidised bed semi-pilot scale gasifier using pine kernel shells (PKS) as feedstock. The influence of temperature, stoichiometric ratio (SR) and steam to biomass ratio (SBR) were analysed. Overall, predictions of the gas composition and gasifica... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: film cooling, gas turbine, heat transfer coefficient, IR thermography
An experimental study was performed to investigate the effects of the arrangement of fan-shaped film cooling holes and density ratio (DR) on heat transfer coefficient augmentation. Both single- and multi-row fan-shaped film cooling holes were considered. For the multi-row fan-shaped holes, the heat transfer coefficient was measured at DRs of 1 and 2, and both staggered and inline arrangements of holes were considered. For the single-row fan-shaped holes, DR = 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 and M = 1.0 and 2.0 conditions were tested. The mainstream velocity was 20 m/s, and the turbulence intensity and boundary layer thickness were 3.6% and 6 mm, respectively. The heat transfer coefficient was measured using the one-dimensional transient infrared thermography method. The results show that an increased heat transfer coefficient augmentation is observed between film cooling holes for the case with a smaller hole pitch and higher blowing ratio. For the given fan-shaped hole parameters, the effects... [more]

Keywords: capability curve, generator, operating condition, visualization
Besides achieving an optimal scheduling generator, the operation safety of the generator itself needs to be focused on. The development of the virtual visualization of a generator capability curve simulation to visualize the operation condition of a generator is proposed in this paper. In this paper, a neural network is applied to redraw the original generator’s capability curve. The virtual visualization of a generator’s capability curve can simulate the generator’s operating condition considering the limitation of the constraints on the various elements of the generator. Furthermore, it is able to show the various possibilities that occur in the operation of a generator in reality, and it can even simulate special conditions which are based on various conditions.

Keywords: forecasting, Hydroelectric Power, Machine Learning, resources managing, telemetry
Hydroelectric power plants’ operational decisions are associated with several factors, such as generation planning, water availability and dam safety. One major challenge is to control the water spillage from the reservoir. Although this action represents a loss of energy production, it is a powerful strategy to regulate the reservoir level, ensuring the dam’s safety. The decision to use this strategy must be made in advance based on level and demand predictions. The present work applies supervised machine learning techniques to predict the operating condition of spillage in a hydroelectric plant for 5 h ahead. The use of this method, in real time, aims to assist the operator so that he can make more assertive and safer decisions, avoiding waste of energy resources and increasing the safety of dams. The Random Forest and Multilayer Perceptron methods were used to define the architecture compared to the forecasting capacity. The proposed methodology was applied to a 902.5 MW Hydroelectr... [more]
