Effects of Crystal Morphology on the Hot-Carrier Dynamics in Mixed-Cation Hybrid Lead Halide Perovskites
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hot-carriers, perovskite, solar cell, ultrafast
Ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopies have proved to be an important tool for the investigation of charge carriers dynamics in perovskite materials providing crucial information on the dynamics of the excited carriers, and fundamental in the development of new devices with tailored photovoltaic properties. Fast transient absorbance spectroscopy on mixed-cation hybrid lead halide perovskite samples was used to investigate how the dimensions and the morphology of the perovskite crystals embedded in the capping (large crystals) and mesoporous (small crystals) layers affect the hot-carrier dynamics in the first hundreds of femtoseconds as a function of the excitation energy. The comparative study between samples with perovskite deposited on substrates with and without the mesoporous layer has shown how the small crystals preserve the temperature of the carriers for a longer period after the excitation than the large crystals. This study showed how the high sensitivity of the time-resolved sp... [more]

Power Forecasting of a Photovoltaic Plant Located in ENEA Casaccia Research Center
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: artificial neural network, forecasting, photovoltaic, PV power
This work proposes an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) able to provide an accurate forecasting of power produced by photovoltaic (PV) plants. The ANN is customized on the basis of the particular season of the year. An accurate analysis of input variables, i.e., solar irradiance, temperature and air humidity, carried out by means of Pearson Correlation, has allowed to select, day by day, the most suitable set of inputs and ANN architecture also to reduce the necessity of large computational resource. Thus, features are added to the ANN as needed, avoiding waste of computational resources. The method has been validated through data collected from a PV plant installed in ENEA (National agency for new technologies, energy and sustainable economic development) Research Center, located in Casaccia, Rome (Italy). The developed strategy is able to furnish accurate predictions even in the case of strong irregularities of solar irradiance, providing accurate results in rapidly changing scenarios.

Deep Geothermal Heating Potential for the Communities of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: deep geothermal heat, energy transfer, foreland basin, heat flow, WCSB
We summarize the feasibility of using geothermal energy from the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) to support communities with populations >3000 people, including those in northeastern British Columbia, southwestern part of Northwest Territories (NWT), southern Saskatchewan, and southeastern Manitoba, along with previously studied communities in Alberta. The geothermal energy potential of the WCSB is largely determined by the basin’s geometry; the sediments start at 0 m thickness adjacent to the Canadian shield in the east and thicken to >6 km to the west, and over 3 km in the Williston sub-basin to the south. Direct heat use is most promising in the western and southern parts of the WCSB where sediment thickness exceeds 2−3 km. Geothermal potential is also dependent on the local geothermal gradient. Aquifers suitable for heating systems occur in western-northwestern Alberta, northeastern British Columbia, and southwestern Saskatchewan. Electrical power production is limited to t... [more]

A Step-by-Step Procedure for Tests and Assessment of the Automatic Operation of a Powered Roof Support
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electro-hydraulic control system, powered roof support, safety function
A powered longwall mining system comprises three basic machines: a shearer, a scraper (longwall) conveyor, and a powered roof support. The powered roof support as a component of a longwall complex has two functions. It protects the working from roof rocks that fall to the area where the machines and people work and transports the machines and devices in the longwall as the mining operation proceeds further into the seam by means of hydraulic actuators that are adequately connected to the powered support. The actuators are controlled by a hydraulic or electro-hydraulic system. The tests and analyses presented in the developed procedure are oriented towards the possibility of introducing automatic control, without the participation of an operator. This is important for the exploitation of seams that are deposited at great depths. The primary objective was to develop a comprehensive methodology for testing and evaluating the possibility of using the system under operating conditions. The... [more]

Design and Thermodynamic Analysis of Waste Heat-Driven Zeolite−Water Continuous-Adsorption Refrigeration and Heat Pump System for Ships
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: Adsorption, heat pump, refrigeration, ship, Water, zeolite
Strict International Maritime Organization (IMO) rules enable ships to maximize fuel consumption and compliance with the climate. Cooling and heat-pumping technology powered by waste heat makes a substantial contribution to lowering ship gas emissions. This study explores, technically studies, and thermodynamically analyzes the efficiency of ongoing adsorption refrigeration and heating systems using a zeolite−water pair onboard a naval surface ship. An updated Dubin-in-Astakhov equation calculates the equilibrium adsorption potential of the operating pair used in the system. The coefficient of performance (COP) and specific cooling power (SCP)/specific heating power (SHP) values were between 0.109 and 0.384 and between 69.13 and 193.58 W kg−1 for cooling mode, and between 66.16 and 185.26 W kg−1 based on exhaust gas temperature and regeneration, respectively. Up to 27.64% and 52.91% met the cooling and heating load of the case vessel at a full load by the zeolite−water-adsorbed refrige... [more]

Model-Based Evaluation of Air-Side Fouling in Closed-Circuit Cooling Towers
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: closed cooling tower, fouling, fouling resistance, heat transfer rate, performance, scaling
Fouling is a permanent problem in process technology and is estimated to cost 0.25% of the gross national product. Evaporative cooling systems are especially susceptible to air-side fouling: as they work with untreated outside air, they are exposed to both natural (e.g., pollen) and human-made (e.g., industrial dust) contaminants. In addition, suspended solid particles and dissolved salts in the spray water are an issue. In this study we analyzed an approach for fouling detection based on a semi-physical (grey-box) cooling tower model which we calibrated with measurement data. A test series with reliable laboratory data indicates good applicability of the model. In three datasets, the performance decreases due to fouling (scaling, which was provoked intentionally) in the range of 5−11% were clearly detected. When applied to measurement data of two cooling towers in real applications, the model also proved to be well calibratable with relatively little data (two to four operating days).... [more]

Optimizing the Geometric Parameters of a Straight-Through Labyrinth Seal to Minimize the Leakage Flow Rate and the Discharge Coefficient
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: discharge coefficient, gas turbine, jet divergence angle, labyrinth seal
A straight-through labyrinth seal is one of the most popular non-contacting annular seals through which energy dissipation by turbulence viscosity interaction is achieved with a series of teeth and cavities. The geometric parameters of the straight-through labyrinth seal, such as clearance, tooth width, tooth height, cavity width, and tooth inclination angle, affect its performance. The space for installing a labyrinth seal in turbomachinery is limited, and so it is important to optimize its geometry for a fixed axial length in order to minimize the leakage flow rate and the discharge coefficient. The objective of the current study is to understand the effects of changing the geometric parameters of the seal on the leakage flow rate and the discharge coefficient, and to determine the optimized geometry for a fixed axial length. When the whole axial length is fixed, the most effective way to decrease the discharge coefficient is to reduce the cavity width by increasing the number of cav... [more]

Effects of SiO2 Nanoparticle Dispersion on The Heat Storage Property of the Solar Salt for Solar Power Applications
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Energy, force, mechanisms, molten salt, nanoparticle, specific heat capacity
The effects of SiO2 nanoparticles on the heat storage properties of Solar Salt (NaNO3-KNO3) are studied using experimental and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The experiment results show the specific heat capacity of the molten salt-based nanofluids is higher than that of the pure base salt. We focus on the inference regarding the possible mechanisms behind the enhancement of the specific heat capacity which are considered more acceptable by the majority of researchers, the energy and force in the system are analyzed by MD simulations. The results demonstrate that the higher specific heat capacity of the nanoparticle is not the reason leading to the heat storage enhancement. Additionally, the analysis of potential energy and system configuration shows that the other possible mechanisms (i.e., interfacial thermal resistance theory and compressed layer theory) are only superficial. The forces between the nanoparticle atoms and base salt ions construct the constraint of the base salt... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: comprehensive performance evaluation index, ELM-QR, extreme learning machine, nonparametric probabilistic prediction, Particle Swarm Optimization, quantile regression, wind power forecasting
Wind power has significant randomness. Probabilistic prediction of wind power is necessary to solve the problem of safe and stable power grid dispatching with the integration of large-scale wind power. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel nonparametric probabilistic prediction model for wind power based on extreme learning machine-quantile regression (ELM-QR). Firstly, the ELM-QR models of multiple quantiles are established, and then the new comprehensive index (NCI) is optimized by particle swarm optimization (PSO) to obtain the weighting coefficients corresponding to the lower and upper bounds of the prediction intervals. The final prediction interval is obtained by integrating the outputs of ELM-QR models and the weighting coefficients. Finally, case studies are carried out with the real wind farm operation data, simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can obtain narrower prediction intervals while ensuring high reliability. Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: deep neural network, human joint estimation, indoor activity, thermal comfort
The type of occupant activities is a significantly important factor to determine indoor thermal comfort; thus, an accurate method to estimate occupant activity needs to be developed. The purpose of this study was to develop a deep neural network (DNN) model for estimating the joint location of diverse human activities, which will be used to provide a comfortable thermal environment. The DNN model was trained with images to estimate 14 joints of a person performing 10 common indoor activities. The DNN contained numerous shortcut connections for efficient training and had two stages of sequential and parallel layers for accurate joint localization. Estimation accuracy was quantified using the mean squared error (MSE) for the estimated joints and the percentage of correct parts (PCP) for the body parts. The results show that the joint MSEs for the head and neck were lowest, and the PCP was highest for the torso. The PCP for individual activities ranged from 0.71 to 0.92, while typing and... [more]

Role of Electromechanical Coupling, Locomotion Type and Damping on the Effectiveness of Fish-Like Robot Energy Harvesters
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: aquatic unmanned vehicle, locomotion type, piezoelectric energy harvesting, soft robotic
In this work, an investigation into the influence of prescribed motion on a body caudal fin aquatic unmanned vehicle (AUV) energy harvester is carried out. The undulatory−oscillation locomotion inspired by fishes actuates a composite beam representative of a spinal column with a piezoelectric patch. Two patch configurations—one at the head and tail—are considered for the AUV energy harvester, with a length that would not activate a harmonic in the system. An electromechanical model which accounts for the strain of the prescribed motion and the induced relative strain is developed. Discretizing the relative strain using Galerkin’s method requires a convergence study in which the impacts of the prescribed motion, dependent on the undulation and envelope of the motion, are investigated. The combination of prescribed motion and structural terms leads to a coupling that requires multiple investigations. The removal of the undulation of the system produces a more consistent response. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ammonia, emissions regulations, pollutant emissions, SI engines
Ammonia is a toxic exhaust component emitted from internal combustion engines. Both pure ammonia and the products of its reaction with nitrogen and sulfur compounds, being the source of particulate matter (PM) emissions, are dangerous for human health and life. The aim of the article was to demonstrate that NH3 can be produced in exhaust gas after-treatment systems of spark-ignition (SI) engines used in light-duty vehicles. In some cases, NH3 occurs in high enough concentrations that can be harmful and dangerous. It would be reasonable to collect research data regarding this problem and consider the advisability of limiting these pollutant emissions in future regulations. The article presents the results of the spark-ignition engine testing on an engine test bench and discusses the impact of the air−fuel ratio regulation and some engine operating parameters on the concentration of NH3. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: delamination, leaching, long term, photovoltaic modules, solubility
This study identifies unstable and soluble layers in commercial photovoltaic modules during 1.5 year long-term leaching. Our experiments cover modules from all major photovoltaic technologies containing solar cells from crystalline silicon (c-Si), amorphous silicon (a-Si), cadmium telluride (CdTe), and copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS). These technologies cover more than 99.9% of the world market. We cut out module pieces of 5 × 5 cm2 in size from these modules and leached them in water-based solutions with pH 4, pH 7, and pH 11, in order to simulate different environmental conditions. Unstable layers open penetration paths for water-based solutions; finally, the leaching results in delamination. In CdTe containing module pieces, the CdTe itself and the back contact are unstable and highly soluble. In CIGS containing module pieces, all of the module layers are more or less soluble. In the case of c-Si module pieces, the cells’ aluminum back contact is unstable. Module pieces from... [more]
