Research on the Power Distribution Method for Hybrid Power System in the Fuel Cell Vehicle
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: fuel cell vehicle, lithium-ion battery, nonlinear programming, power distribution, vehicle engineering
The power distribution strategy of hybrid power sources is an important issue for fuel cell vehicles. A good power distribution control strategy can realize the optimal control of the vehicle energy, which can save energy and improve the operating conditions of the power source. Therefore, this article proposes a power distribution strategy. First, in order to solve the problems existing in the existing fuel cell model and the lithium-ion battery model, an improved hybrid power system model with better dynamic performance was established in the Simulink. Second, in order to ensure the durability of the power system, operation constraints are added to the distribution strategy. Finally, the power allocation is regarded as a nonlinear programming optimization problem and solved by a nonlinear programming algorithm. The nonlinear programming algorithm selects the BFGS algorithm. The simulation results of other control strategies in MATLAB show that the proposed power distribution strategy... [more]

Integration and Optimal Control of MicroCSP with Building HVAC Systems: Review and Future Directions
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: building predictive control, energy management, microCSP, solar energy conversion, thermal-assisted HVAC
Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems are omnipresent in modern buildings and are responsible for a considerable share of consumed energy and the electricity bill in buildings. On the other hand, solar energy is abundant and could be used to support the building HVAC system through cogeneration of electricity and heat. Micro-scale concentrated solar power (MicroCSP) is a propitious solution for such applications that can be integrated into the building HVAC system to optimally provide both electricity and heat, on-demand via application of optimal control techniques. The use of thermal energy storage (TES) in MicroCSP adds dispatching capabilities to the MicroCSP energy production that will assist in optimal energy management in buildings. This work presents a review of the existing contributions on the combination of MicroCSP and HVAC systems in buildings and how it compares to other thermal-assisted HVAC applications. Different topologies and architectures for the... [more]

A Thermal-Hydraulic Model for the Stagnation of Solar Thermal Systems with Flat-Plate Collector Arrays
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flat-plate collector, Solar Thermal, stagnation, steam range, thermal-hydraulic model, two-phase mixture model
Stagnation is the transient state of a solar thermal system under high solar irradiation where the useful solar gain is zero. Both flat-plate collectors with selective absorber coatings and vacuum-tube collectors exhibit stagnation temperatures far above the saturation temperature of the glycol-based heat carriers within the range of typical system pressures. Therefore, stagnation is always associated with vaporization and propagation of vapor into the pipes of the solar circuit. It is therefore essential to design the system in such a way that vapor never reaches components that cannot withstand high temperatures. In this article, a thermal-hydraulic model based on the integral form of a two-phase mixture model and a drift-flux correlation is presented. The model is applicable to solar thermal flat-plate collectors with meander-shaped absorber tubes and selective absorber coatings. Experimental data from stagnation experiments on two systems, which are identical except for the optical... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: environmental vulnerability, hydrocarbons extraction
The objective of this work is to analyze disturbances in the environment caused by anthropic activities in the oil and gas extraction sector. Methodologically, focusing on environmental vulnerability (EV), hydrocarbons (oil and gas) are considered through a qualitative and quantitative analysis of environmental impacts, including the research of Environmental Impact Studies and procedures like EIA/RIMA (institutional Environmental Impact Reports in Brazil). This study focuses on the operation and demobilization of the offshore drilling activity and the installation and operation of the Santos Basin pre-salt oil and gas production (Stages 1, 2, and 3). The criteria addressed in the EIA/RIMAs are used, focusing on those that correlate with EV and oil and gas extraction. Impacts for long-term, permanent, partially reversible, or irreversible disturbances are filtered, totaling 53 impacts (31 effective/21 potential). We concluded that the criteria and methodologies of EIAs vary between sta... [more]

CFD Analysis of Turbulent Flow of Power-Law Fluid in a Partially Blocked Eccentric Annulus
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: annular flow, bed shear stress, Computational Fluid Dynamics, turbulent flow, velocity profile
This study focuses on analyzing the turbulent flow of drilling fluid in inclined wells using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique. The analysis is performed considering an annulus with a fixed eccentricity of 90% and varying fluid properties, diameter ratio, and bed thickness to examine velocity profile, pressure loss, and overall wall and average bed shear stresses. CFD simulation results are compared with existing data for validation. The pressure loss predicted with CFD agrees with the data. After verification, predictions are used to establish a correlation that can be applied to compute bed shear stress. The established correlation mostly displays a discrepancy of up to 10% when compared with simulation data. The correlation can be used to optimize hole cleaning and manage downhole pressure.

Economic Evaluation of PV Installations for Self-Consumption in Industrial Parks
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: industrial parks, LCC, legislation, photovoltaics, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, self-consumption, Sustainability
This paper presents an analysis of the economic performance of photovoltaic (PV) self-consumption systems at an industrial park in the Basque Country (north of Spain). The economic feasibility of the installations is largely dependent on self-consumption and compensation due to electricity injected into the grid, as well as the assumed evolution of the electricity prices. A sensitivity analysis is carried out for different installation sizes and different evolution scenarios concerning electricity prices. The potential for installations for shared self-consumption with dynamic and static distribution coefficients is also analyzed. The results show that medium sized installations are generally a cost effective way to reduce energy bills, while the economic performance of larger installations is more uncertain, and is largely dependent on the selling price for electricity injected into the grid. This case study found that the economic benefits of shared self-consumption between different... [more]

Role of Monovalent and Divalent Ions in Low-Salinity Water Flood in Carbonate Reservoirs: An Integrated Analysis through Zeta Potentiometric and Simulation Studies
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: carbonates, electric double layer, low-salinity water flood, Potential Determining Ions, reservoir simulation, zeta potential
The presence of principal ions in the water injected is essential for enhanced oil recovery by formation of water-wet state in carbonates. This study reaffirms this and presents an evaluation of the positive influence of both divalent as wells as monovalent ions on wettability alteration mechanisms during low salinity waterflooding using brines of varying ionic composition, referred to as “smart brines”. Zeta potentiometric analysis and reservoir simulation studies were conducted with diluted and smart brines that were prepared by varying the composition of principal ions. Surface charge of oil-saturated whole core samples of rock in the presence of various diluted and smart brines was estimated by zeta potential measurements. A comprehensive analysis of zeta potentiometric and reservoir simulation studies was done to establish and investigate the linkage between the recovery mechanism and the incremental recovery achieved. It is noted that zeta potential increases with the increasing... [more]

Theoretical and Experimental Analysis of Aerodynamic Noise in Small Wind Turbines
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aeroacoustic, aerodynamic profile, boundary layer, noise emission, small wind turbine, sound pressure level
This paper presents an analysis of sound pressure levels through theoretical modeling and experimental validation in a 1 kW small wind turbine. The models used in the theoretical analysis are BPM (Brooks, Pope, and Marcolini) and BM (Brooks and Marcolini), where wind turbine blades are divided in sections, and each section has its own contribution with respect to the total emitted sound pressure level. The noise propagation study and its experimental validation were accomplished within the requirements of the standard IEC 61400-11 Ed.3 and the standard NOM-081-SEMARNAT-1994. The comparative study of theoretical and experimental results showed that the BPM and BM methods have a maximum error of 5.5% corresponding to the rated wind speed of 10 m/s. However, at low wind speeds, the theoretical models fit well to experimental data, for example, in the range from 5 to 8 m/s. The experimental data showed that the rotor’s aerodynamic noise is more evident at low wind speed, because under thes... [more]

Reviewing the Exergy Analysis of Solar Thermal Systems Integrated with Phase Change Materials
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: efficiency, Exergy, mathematical modeling, phase change material, solar thermal storage, thermodynamic analysis
The application of thermal storage materials in solar systems involves materials that utilize sensible heat energy, thermo-chemical reactions or phase change materials, such as hydrated salts, fatty acids paraffin and non-paraffin like glycerol. This article reviews the various exergy approaches that were applied for several solar systems including hybrid solar water heating, solar still, solar space heating, solar dryers/heaters and solar cooking systems. In fact, exergy balance was applied for the different components of the studied system with a particular attention given to the determination of the exergy efficiency and the calculation of the exergy during charging and discharging periods. The influence of the system configuration and heat transfer fluid was also emphasized. This review shows that not always the second law of thermodynamics was applied appropriately during modeling, such as how to consider heat charging and discharging periods of the tested phase change material. Some Aspects of the Modelling of Thin-Layer Drying of Sawdust
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dehydration, drying, mechanical engineering, Modelling, sawdust
Drying of spruce, beech, willow, and alder sawdust was examined in a laboratory type dryer. The effect of drying air temperature T (25, 60, and 80 °C) and airflow velocity v (0.01, 0.15, and 1.5 m/s) was investigated. The obtained results demonstrated that drying air temperature and airflow velocity have impacts on the drying of sawdust. The experimental dehydration data of sawdust obtained were fitted to theoretical, semi-theoretical, and empirical thin-layer models. The accuracies of the models were estimated using the correlation coefficient (R), root mean square error (RMSE), and reduced chi-square (χ2). All models except the theoretical model of a sphere described the drying characteristics of sawdust satisfactorily. The effect of T and v on the parameters (constants and coefficients) of the drying models were determined. The effect, by the proposed equations, was also described. This work combines aspects of mechanical engineering and modelling of the drying process.

Battery Stress Factor Ranking for Accelerated Degradation Test Planning Using Machine Learning
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: accelerated testing, C-rate, cycle life, lithium-ion batteries, Machine Learning, temperature
Lithium-ion batteries power numerous systems from consumer electronics to electric vehicles, and thus undergo qualification testing for degradation assessment prior to deployment. Qualification testing involves repeated charge−discharge operation of the batteries, which can take more than three months if subjected to 500 cycles at a C-rate of 0.5C. Accelerated degradation testing can be used to reduce extensive test time, but its application requires a careful selection of stress factors. To address this challenge, this study identifies and ranks stress factors in terms of their effects on battery degradation (capacity fade) using half-fractional design of experiments and machine learning. Two case studies are presented involving 96 lithium-ion batteries from two different manufacturers, tested under five different stress factors. Results show that neither the individual (main) effects nor the two-way interaction effects of charge C-rate and depth of discharge rank in the top three sig... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Envi-met, extreme weather, floor area ratio, microclimate, particulate matter, urban street canyons
Air pollution, such as particulate matter (PM), and extreme weather are causing increasingly complex problems and socioeconomic damage in urban environments year-round. This study predicts extreme weather and air pollution changes that occur in urban street canyons as the basic data necessary for research on energy conservation. Changes in PM and microclimate elements based on the change in floor area ratio are analyzed. In addition, the effects of microclimate elements on the distribution of PM factors are examined. Based on the change in floor area ratio, high-concentration PM was negatively correlated with PM2.5, PM10, O3, NO2, NOx, Ta, Tmrt, and Tsurface. Extreme heat was observed to be negatively correlated with Tmrt and Tsurface, and extreme cold negatively correlated with PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and NOx. The higher the floor area ratio, the higher the wind speed (WS), indicating a positive correlation between the two factors. Ta, Tmrt, and Tsurface were observed to be negatively corre... [more]

IEC 61850-Based Centralized Protection against Single Line-To-Ground Faults in Ungrounded Distribution Systems
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: centralized protection, GOOSE message, IEC 61850, IED, single line-to-ground fault, ungrounded distribution system
We developed an International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61850-based centralized protection scheme to prevent single line-to-ground (SLG) faults in the feeders and busbars of ungrounded distribution systems. Each feeder intelligent electronic device (IED) measures its zero-sequence current and voltage signals and periodically transmits zero-sequence phasors to a central IED via a Generic Oriented Object Substation Event message. Using the zero-sequence phasors, the central IED detects SLG faults in feeders and busbars. To achieve centralized protection, angle differences between the zero-sequence currents and voltage phasors are exploited, and their calculation compensates for data desynchronization. The feeder IEDs were implemented using the MMS-EASE Lite library, while the transmitted zero-sequence phasors were calculated based on fault signals simulated by Power System Computer Aided Design / Electro-Magnetic Transient Design and Control (PSCAD/EMTDC). Watt’s up at Home? Smart Meter Data Analytics from a Consumer-Centric Perspective
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy data processing, power consumption data, smart metering, smart power grids, user-centric applications of energy data
The key advantage of smart meters over traditional metering devices is their ability to transfer consumption information to remote data processing systems. Besides enabling the automated collection of a customer’s electricity consumption for billing purposes, the data collected by these devices makes the realization of many novel use cases possible. However, the large majority of such services are tailored to improve the power grid’s operation as a whole. For example, forecasts of household energy consumption or photovoltaic production allow for improved power plant generation scheduling. Similarly, the detection of anomalous consumption patterns can indicate electricity theft and serve as a trigger for corresponding investigations. Even though customers can directly influence their electrical energy consumption, the range of use cases to the users’ benefit remains much smaller than those that benefit the grid in general. In this work, we thus review the range of services tailored to t... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: fin-and-tube, heat exchanger, heat transfer coefficient, melting, natural convection, phase change material (PCM)
Latent heat thermal energy storage systems allow storing large amounts of energy in relatively small volumes. Phase change materials (PCMs) are used as a latent heat storage medium. However, low thermal conductivity of most PCMs results in long melting (charging) and solidification (discharging) processes. This study focuses on the PCM melting process in a fin-and-tube type copper heat exchanger. The aim of this study is to define analytically natural convection heat transfer coefficient and compare the results with experimental data. The study shows how the local heat transfer coefficient changes in different areas of the heat exchanger and how it is affected by the choice of characteristic length and boundary conditions. It has been determined that applying the calculation method of the natural convection occurring in the channel leads to results that are closer to the experiment. Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: iterated random forest, online assessment, partial mutual information, voltage stability margin
Due to the rapid development of phasor measurement units (PMUs) and the wide area of interconnection of modern power systems, the security of power systems is confronted with severe challenges. A novel framework based on data for static voltage stability margin (VSM) assessment of power systems is presented. The proposed framework can select the key operation variables as input features for the assessment based on partial mutual information (PMI). Before the feature selection procedure is completed by PMI, a feature preprocessing approach is applied to remove redundant and irrelevant features to improve computational efficiency. Using the selected key variables, a voltage stability assessment (VSA) model based on iterated random forest (IRF) can rapidly provide the relative VSM results. Experimental Study on Infrared Temperature Characteristics and Failure Modes of Marble with Prefabricated Holes under Uniaxial Compression
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: infrared thermal imaging, prefabricated hole marble, stress–strain, temperature field, uniaxial compression experiment
In rock engineering, it is of great significance to study the failure mechanical behavior of rocks with holes. Using a combination of experiment and infrared detection, the strength, deformation, and infrared temperature evolution behavior of marble with elliptical holes under uniaxial compression were studied. The test results showed that as the vertical axis b of the ellipse increased, the peak intensity first decreased and then increased, and the minimum value appeared when the horizontal axis was equal to the vertical axis. The detection results of the infrared thermal imager showed that the maximum temperature, minimum temperature, and average temperature of the observation area in the loading stage showed a downward trend, and the range of change was between 0.02 °C and 1 °C. It was mainly due to the accumulation of energy in the loading process of the rock sample that caused the surface temperature of the specimen to decrease. Subject: Other
Keywords: diagnostics, neural networks, permanent magnet synchronous motor, rolling bearing fault
Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are becoming more popular, both in industrial applications and in electric and hybrid vehicle drives. Unfortunately, like the others, these are not reliable drives. As in the drive systems with induction motors, the rolling bearings can often fail. This paper focuses on the possibility of detecting this type of mechanical damage by analysing mechanical vibrations supported by shallow neural networks (NNs). For the extraction of diagnostic symptoms, the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and the Hilbert transform (HT) were used to obtain the envelope signal, which was subjected to the FFT analysis. Three types of neural networks were tested to automate the detection process: multilayer perceptron (MLP), neural network with radial base function (RBF), and Kohonen map (self-organizing map, SOM). Gas Hydrate System Offshore Chile
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Chilean margin, gas hydrate, hazard, porosity, slope
In recent decades, the Chilean margin has been extensively investigated to better characterize the complex geological setting through the geophysical data. The analysis of seismic lines allowed us to identify the occurrence of gas hydrates and free gas in many places along the margin and the change of the pore fluid due to the potential hydrate dissociation. The porosity reduction due to the hydrate presence is linked to the slope to identify the area more sensitive in case of natural phenomena or induced by human activities that could determine gas hydrate dissociations and/or leakage of the free gas trapped below the gas-hydrate stability zone. Clearly, the gas hydrate reservoir could be a strategic energy reserve for Chile. The steady-state modelling pointed out that the climate change could determine gas hydrate dissociation, triggering slope failure. This hypothesis is supported by the presence of high concentrations of gas hydrate in correspondence of important seafloor slope. Th... [more]
