Reduced-Order Modelling Applied to the Multigroup Neutron Diffusion Equation Using a Nonlinear Interpolation Method for Control-Rod Movement
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: eigenvalue problem, model order reduction, multigroup neutron diffusion, proper orthogonal decomposition, reactor criticality, reduced-order modelling
Producing high-fidelity real-time simulations of neutron diffusion in a reactor is computationally extremely challenging, due, in part, to multiscale behaviour in energy and space. In many scientific fields, including nuclear modelling, the application of reduced-order modelling can lead to much faster computation times without much loss of accuracy, paving the way for real-time simulation as well as multi-query problems such as uncertainty quantification and data assimilation. This paper compares two reduced-order models that are applied to model the movement of control rods in a fuel assembly for a given temperature profile. The first is a standard approach using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) to generate global basis functions, and the second, a new method, uses POD but produces global basis functions that are local in the parameter space (associated with the control-rod height). To approximate the eigenvalue problem in reduced space, a novel, nonlinear interpolation is propo... [more]

Analysis and Design of Asymmetric Mid-Range Wireless Power Transfer System with Metamaterials
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: metamaterials, power transfer efficiency, wireless power transfer
In a wireless power transfer (WPT) system, the power transfer efficiency (PTE) decreases sharply with the increase in transfer distance. Metamaterials (MMs) have shown great potential to enhance PTE in mid-range WPT systems. In this paper, we propose two MM slabs of a 3 × 3 array to enhance the magnetic coupling. The MM unit cell was designed by using square spiral patterns on a thin printed circuit board (PCB). Moreover, the asymmetric four-coil WPT system was designed and built based on the practical application scenario of wireless charging for unmanned devices. The simulation and experimental results show that two MM slabs can enhance power transmission capability better than one MM slab. By optimizing the position and spacing of two MM slabs, the PTE was significantly improved at a mid-range distance. The measured PTEs of a system with two MM slabs can reach 72.05%, 64.33% and 49.63% at transfer distances of 80, 100 and 120 cm. When the transfer distance is 100 cm, the PTE of a sy... [more]

Post COVID-19 Recovery and 2050 Climate Change Targets: Changing the Emphasis from Promotion of Renewables to Mandated Curtailment of Fossil Fuels in the EU Policies
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: climate change, COVID-19, Energy, European Union policies, fossil fuels, Paris agreement 2050 targets, renewable energy sources
The present work considers the dramatic changes the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to the global economy, with particular emphasis on energy. Focusing on the European Union, the article discusses the opportunities policy makers can implement to reduce the climate impacts and achieve the Paris Agreement 2050 targets. The analysis specifically looks at the fossil fuels industry and the future of the fossil sector post COVID-19 pandemic. The analysis first revises the fossil fuel sector, and then considers the need for a shift of the global climate change policy from promoting the deployment of renewable energy sources to curtailing the use of fossil fuels. This will be a change to the current global approach, from a relative passive one to a strategically dynamic and proactive one. Such a curtailment should be based on actual volumes of fossil fuels used and not on percentages. Finally, conclusions are preliminary applied to the European Union policies for net zero by 2050 based on a two-... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: AC magnetic field, high energy conversion, lead-free material, piezoelectric energy harvester, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
This article presents a high-performance lead-free piezoelectric energy harvester (LPEH) system for magnetic field. It based on a Ba0.85Ca0.15Ti0.90Zr0.10O3 + CuO 0.3 wt% (BCTZC0.3) composite was fabricated by sintering at 1450 °C. The BCTZC0.3 composite, which has an enhanced high energy conversion constant (d33×g33), shows improved piezoelectric power-generation performance when compared with conventional piezoelectric energy harvesters. The BCTZC0.3-based LPEH produces instantaneous maximum power of 8.2 mW and an energy density of 107.9 mW/cm3 in a weak magnetic field of 250 μT. This system can be used to charge a capacitor and operate a wireless sensor network (WSN) system to provide temperature sensing and radio-frequency (RF) transmission in a 250 μT magnetic field. The proposed LPEH is a promising green-energy device for potentially self-powering WSN systems when applied.

Research into Dissociation Zones of Gas Hydrate Deposits with a Heterogeneous Structure in the Black Sea
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Black Sea, dissociation process, gas hydrate, methane, rock, Ukraine
Ukraine is an energy-dependent country, with less that 50% of its energy consumption fulfilled by its own resources. Natural gas is of paramount importance, especially for industry and society. Therefore, there is an urgent need to search for alternative and potential energy sources, such as gas hydrate deposits in the Black Sea, which can reduce the consumption of imported gas. It is necessary to refine the process parameters of the dissociation of gas hydrate deposits with a heterogeneous structure. The analyzed known geological−geophysical data devoted to the study of the offshore area and the seabed give grounds to assert the existence of a significant amount of hydrate deposits in the Black Sea. An integrated methodological approach is applied, which consists of the development of algorithms for analytical and laboratory studies of gas volumes obtained during the dissociation of deposits with a heterogeneous structure. These data are used for the computer modelling of the dissocia... [more]

Development of a Condensation Model and a New Design of a Condensation Hood—Numerical and Experimental Study
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: condensation hood, heat exchanger model, species transport model, UDF steam condensation model
The development of a numerical model and design for the innovative construction of a heat exchanger (HE) used in a condensation hood (being a part of the combi-steamer) are described in this work. The model covers an air-steam flow, heat transfer, and a steam condensation process. The last two processes were implemented with the use of an in-house model introduced via User Defined Functions (UDF). As the condensate volume is negligible compared to the steam, the proposed model removes the condensate from the domain. This approach enabled the usage of a single-phase flow for both air and steam using a species transport model. As a consequence, a significant mesh and computation time reduction were achieved. The new heat exchanger is characterised by reorganised fluid flow and by externally finned pipes (contrary to the original construction, where internally finned pipes were used). This allowed a reduction in the number of the pipes from 48 to 5, which significantly simplifies construc... [more]

Performance Assessment of Double Corrugated Tubes in a Tube-In-Shell Heat Exchanger
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD modelling, enhanced heat transfer, nature inspired geometry, turbulent flow region
In this article, the performance of double corrugated tubes applied in a tube-in-shell heat exchanger is analysed and compared to the performance of a heat exchanger equipped with straight tubes. The CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analysis was performed considering a turbulent flow regime at several mass flow rates. It is observed that the double corrugated geometry does not have a significant impact on the pressure drop inside the analysed heat exchanger, while it has the potential to increase its thermal performance by up to 25%. The ε−NTU (effectiveness−number of transfer units) relation also demonstrates the advantage of using double corrugated tubes in tube-in-shell heat exchangers over straight tubes.

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: discrete-time current control, field oriented control, Lyapunov, multiphase induction motor, super-twisting control, terminal sliding mode
In this manuscript, the high-accuracy stator currents tracking issue is considered for a six-phase induction motor subject to external perturbations and uncertainties due to unmeasurable rotor currents and electrical parameter variations. To achieve the control goals, the common two-cascade controllers structure is required for this type of motor. The first controller in the outer loop consists of a proportional integral to regulate the speed. Then, the second is the proposed inner nonlinear stator currents controller based on a robust discrete-time terminal super-twisting algorithm supported by the time-delay estimation method. For the design procedure, the discrete-time stator currents dynamics are derived; for example, the vector of the matched perturbations and unmeasurable rotor currents are specified to simplify the estimation. A detailed stability analysis of the closed-loop error dynamics using Lyapunov theory is given. Finally, a real asymmetrical six-phase induction motor is... [more]

The mutualistic interactions between the oleaginous yeast Lipomyces starkeyi and the green microalga Chloroidium saccharophilum in mixed cultures were investigated to exploit possible synergistic effects. In fact, microalga could act as an oxygen generator for the yeast, while the yeast could provide carbon dioxide to microalga. The behavior of the two microorganisms alone and in mixed culture was studied in two synthetic media (YEG and BBM + G) before moving on to a real model represented by the hydrolysate of Arundo donax, used as low-cost feedstock, and previously subjected to steam explosion and enzymatic hydrolysis. The overall lipid content and lipid productivity obtained in the mixed culture of YEG, BBM + G and for the hydrolysate of Arundo donax were equal to 0.064, 0.064 and 0.081 glipid·gbiomass−1 and 30.14, 35.56 and 37.22 mglipid·L−1·day−1, respectively. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric vehicles, flexibility, Genetic Algorithm, peak shaving, V2G services, valley filling
The increasing penetration of electrical vehicles (EVs), on the way to decarbonizing the transportation sector, presents several challenges and opportunities for the end users, the distribution grid, and the electricity markets. Uncontrollable EV charging may increase peak demand and impact the grid stability and reliability, especially in the case of non-interconnected microgrids such as the distribution grids of small islands. On the other hand, if EVs are considered as flexible loads and distributed storage, they may offer Vehicle to Grid (V2G) services and contribute to demand-side management through smart charging and discharging. In this work, we present a study on the penetration of EVs and the flexibility they may offer for services to the grid, using a genetic algorithm for optimum valley filling and peak shaving for the case of a non-interconnected island where the electricity demand is several times higher during the summer due to the influx of tourists. The Zn(II) and Mn(II) removal by an ion flotation process from model and real dilute aqueous solutions derived from waste batteries was studied in this work. The research aimed to determine optimal conditions for the removal of Zn(II) and Mn(II) from aqueous solutions after acidic leaching of Zn-C and Zn-Mn waste batteries. The ion flotation process was carried out at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure. Two organic compounds used as collectors were applied, i.e., m-dodecylphosphoric acid 32 and m-tetradecylphosphoric 33 acid in the presence of a non-ionic foaming agent (Triton X-100, 29). It was found that both compounds can be used as collectors in the ion flotation for Zn(II) and Mn(II) removal process. Process parameters for Zn(II) and Mn(II) flotation have been established for collective or selective removal metals, e.g., good selectivity coefficients equal to 29.2 for Zn(II) over Mn(II) was achieved for a 10 min process using collector 32 in the presence of foaming agent... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: autonomous optimization, battery energy storage systems, day-ahead stock market price, economic potential, fluctuating electric supply and demand, optimal storage design
Global warming requires a changeover from fossil fuel based to renewable energy sources on the electrical supply side and electrification of the demand side. Due to the transient nature of renewables and fluctuating demand, buffer capacities are necessary to compensate for supply/demand imbalances. Battery energy storage systems are promising. However, the initial costs are high. Repurposing electric vehicle batteries can reduce initial costs. Further, storage design optimization could significantly improve costs. Therefore, a battery control algorithm was developed, and a simulation study was performed to identify the optimal storage design and its economic potential. The algorithm used is based on autonomous (on-site) optimization, which relies on an incentive determining the operation mode (charge, discharge, or idle). The incentive used was the historic day-ahead stock market price for electricity, and the resulting potential economic gains for different European countries were com... [more]

Progress in Catalytic Hydrogen Production from Formic Acid over Supported Metal Complexes
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biomass, formic acid decomposition, heterogeneous catalyst, Hydrogen, iridium, iron, metal complex, ruthenium
Formic acid is a liquid organic hydrogen carrier giving hydrogen on demand using catalysts. Metal complexes are known to be used as efficient catalysts for the hydrogen production from formic acid decomposition. Their performance could be better than those of supported catalysts with metal nanoparticles. However, difficulties to separate metal complexes from the reaction mixture limit their industrial applications. This problem can be resolved by supporting metal complexes on the surface of different supports, which may additionally provide some surface sites for the formic acid activation. The review analyzes the literature on the application of supported metal complexes in the hydrogen production from formic acid. It shows that the catalytic activity of some stable Ru and Ir supported metal complexes may exceed the activity of homogeneous metal complexes used for deposition. A reliable prediction of sustainable energy consumption is key for designing environmentally friendly buildings. In this study, three novel hybrid intelligent methods, namely the grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA), wind-driven optimization (WDO), and biogeography-based optimization (BBO), are employed to optimize the multitarget prediction of heating loads (HLs) and cooling loads (CLs) in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Concerning the optimization of the applied algorithms, a series of swarm-based iterations are performed, and the best structure is proposed for each model. The GOA, WDO, and BBO algorithms are mixed with a class of feedforward artificial neural networks (ANNs), which is called a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) to predict the HL and CL. Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: fault current, insulation of electrical networks, resonant grounded system, single-phase-to-ground fault, symmetrical components
Settings of protection are essential to ensure the sensitivity and selectivity needed to detect defects. Making the correct settings requires the calculation of the fault currents with as little error as possible. Fault currents are influenced by the parameters of the electrical networks, including the state of the insulation and the Petersen coil, which changes during their operation electrical networks. This paper analyzes how the insulation parameters of medium voltage power lines, the parameters of the Petersen coil used to treat the neutral of the medium voltage electrical network and the value of the resistance at the fault location influence the fault current in the case of a single-phase fault. The large number of single-phase faults that occur in medium voltage electrical networks justifies this analysis. The symmetrical components method was used to calculate the fault current. The results obtained by calculation were verified experimentally by causing a single-phase-to-groun... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: activation energy, effective diffusivity, lawsone, Lawsonia inermis, ultrasound
The effect of drying temperature and the application of ultrasound on drying kinetics of Lawsonia inermis (henna) leaves and the extraction of lawsone from the dried samples was addressed. Indeed, henna leaves were dried with and without the application of ultrasound (21.7 kHz, 30.8 kW/m3) at 40, 50 and 60 °C with a constant air velocity (1 m/s). As expected, both the increase of temperature and the application of ultrasound decreased the drying time and increased the rate of extraction of the lawsone. The values of the effective diffusion coefficients obtained were used to quantify this influence showing the value increases with higher drying temperature and the application of ultrasound. Moreover, the influence of temperature was quantified by the estimation of the activation energy from an Arrhenius-type equation (46.25 kJ/mol in the case of drying without ultrasound application and 44.06 kJ/mol in the case of ultrasonically-assisted drying). Subject: Process Control
Keywords: FCS-MPC, indirect matrix converter, motor drives, standard quadratic cost function, torque synchronization system, weight coefficient
In the dual-motor torque synchronization system fed by an indirect matrix converter (IMC), a finite set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) strategy based on a standard quadratic cost function was proposed to solve the open-loop problem of the torque synchronization error in a traditional closed-loop control strategy. Through the unified modeling of a dual-motor system, the torque synchronization error as a new state variable was involved in the switching state selection of the inverter stages, and the space vector modulation method was still used in the rectifier stage. At the same time, based on the unified prediction model, the auxiliary diagonal matrix was constructed, and the weight coefficients were solved offline by using the Lyapunov stability theory to ensure the convergence of each error term in the continuous control period. The proposed FCS-MPC strategy not only solves the problem of weight coefficient setting, but also makes it possible for a multi-motor synchronization sys... [more]

Keywords: combined heat and power plant (CHP), environmental impact, human health impact, life cycle assessment (LCA), noise silencer
Although one of the most harmful factors to health is noise, it is often ignored in life cycle assessment (LCA) studies. Most researches regarding noise inclusion in LCA focus on the problem of transport noise, and very few works consider the impact of noise emitted by other sources. This study addresses the effects of noise generated by cogeneration plants. The main objective is to assess the environmental performance of the noise reduction system by considering the health effects of noise due to steam discharge as well as to compare the environmental loss associated with the production and disposal of a steam silencer with the benefits resulting from its application for noise reduction. A method to determine midpoint and endpoint human health indicators for a composition of noise emitted by intermittent stationary source and background noise is developed.
