Biogas Production from Excess Sludge Oxidized with Peracetic Acid (PAA)
Iwona Zawieja, Małgorzata Worwąg
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: anaerobic stabilization, biogas, digestion degree, disintegration, peracetic acid (PAA)
Human functioning related to living and economic activity involves generating an increasing amount of sewage and sludge, which needs to be subjected to advanced processes of treatment, neutralization, and management. The deterioration in the susceptibility of excess sludge to biochemical decomposition observed under anaerobic conditions leads to the development and application of highly effective methods of wastewater treatment based on the removal of biogenic compounds using activated sludge, with a high degree of sludge thickening obtained in mechanical facilities. The concentration of volatile fatty acids, being an important intermediate product of anaerobic stabilization, directly determines biogas production efficiency. This study aimed to determine the effect of chemical disintegration with peracetic acid on biogas production efficiency using methane fermentation of pretreated sludge. Intensification of the hydrolysis phase is an important determinant of the efficiency of biochem... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, hygrothermal building simulation WUFI®, Latent Heat Storage, PCM, programmable and switchable material, thermal management
The research project Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence “Programmable Materials” aims to develop new materials that can change their properties according to defined boundaries. This article describes the development and use of a novel programmable phase change material (PCM) for latent heat storage applications. At the moment, these PCMs have a programmable trigger mechanism incorporated that activates the crystallization of the material as a reaction to a defined stimulus so that the stored heat is released. In future development stages, programmability is to be integrated on the material level. The latent heat storage that is based on PCMs can be recharged by using the energy of the sun. As an example, for a possible application of such a material, the use of a novel programmable PCM in greenhouses to support heating energy reduction or to reduce the risk of frost is explained. Using the hygrothermal simulation tool WUFI® Plus, the effects in greenhouse constructions without and with c... [more]
A Current Sensor Fault Tolerant Control Strategy for PMSM Drive Systems Based on Cri Markers
Kamila Jankowska, Mateusz Dybkowski
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: current sensor, fault detector, FOC, FTC, PMSM
The paper describes a vector-controlled fault tolerant control (FTC) structure for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. As a control algorithm, the classical field oriented control was applied. For the proper operation of this drive, minimum two current sensors are necessary, however, in the FTC drives additional redundant transducers are applied. Each measuring sensor, including current sensors, are susceptible to damage and can lead to unstable operation of the drive. The presented control structure, with a diagnostic and compensation system, is robust to the typical current sensor faults—lack of signal, intermittent signal, variable gain, signal noise and signal saturation. The fault detection algorithm is based on the signal method. The fault diagnostic system is tested in two control algorithms—the scalar control and vector control ones—to demonstrate the transient of the faulted signals, detection signals and detection time. After current sensor fault appearance, its... [more]
Does Investor Sentiment Affect Clean Energy Stock? Evidence from TVP-VAR-Based Connectedness Approach
Tiantian Liu, Shigeyuki Hamori
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: clean energy, dynamic connectedness, investor sentiment, TVP-VAR
We investigated the connectedness of the returns and volatility of clean energy stock, technology stock, crude oil, natural gas, and investor sentiment based on the time-varying parameter vector autoregressive (TVP-VAR) connectedness approach. The empirical results indicate that the average total connectedness is higher in the volatility system than in the return system. The investor sentiment has a weak impact on clean energy stock. Our results show that the dynamic total connectedness across assets in the system varies with time. Furthermore, the dynamic total connectedness increases significantly during financial turmoil. Dynamic total volatility connectedness is more sensitive to financial turmoil. By comparing the connectedness estimated by the TVP-VAR model with the rolling-window VAR model, we find the dynamic total return connectedness of the TVP-VAR model is similar to the estimated results of a 200 day rolling-window VAR model.

Adrian Tantau, András Puskás-Tompos, Laurentiu Fratila, Costel Stanciu
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aggregator, demand response, demand side management, electrical energy consumers, flexible loads
Demand response plays a very important role in balancing the intermittent production of an increasing share of renewable energy sources on the energy market. This article analyses the importance of demand response and the role of aggregators for the new development of the electricity market, where the renewables will play a more important role. The main objective of this research is to determine the acceptance level of demand response and its implementation on the energy consumer side. This acceptance should include a professional actor, the aggregator which is assuming the role of optimizing the relation between energy producers and consumers, and to monitor the implementation and use of demand response. The research is based on semi-structured interviews with experts in energy from Hungary, Romania and Serbia, on workshops with experts and a wider online survey with end customers for electricity. The results indicate that there is a willingness potential to implement demand response... [more]

Xiaobo Sun, Weirong Liu, Mengfei Wen, Yue Wu, Heng Li, Jiahao Huang, Chao Hu, Zhiwu Huang
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: connected hybrid electric vehicle, energy management, energy-saving, receding horizon control
This paper develops a model predictive multi-objective control framework based on an adaptive cruise control (ACC) system to solve the energy allocation and battery state of charge (SOC) maintenance problems of hybrid electric vehicles in the car-following scenario. The proposed control framework is composed of a car-following layer and an energy allocation layer. In the car-following layer, a multi-objective problem is solved to maintain safety and comfort, and the generated speed sequence in the prediction time domain is put forward to the energy allocation layer. In the energy allocation layer, an adaptive equivalent-factor-based consumption minimization strategy with the predicted velocity sequences is adopted to improve the engine efficiency and fuel economy. The equivalent factor reflects the extent of SOC variation, which is used to maintain the battery SOC level when optimizing the energy. The proposed controller is evaluated in the New York City Cycle (NYCC) driving cycle and... [more]

Roham Torabi, Álvaro Gomes, F. Morgado-Dias
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: 100%RES, Energy Storage, EVs, isolated power grids, RO seawater desalination, sector-coupling, transport decarbonization, V2G
Facilitating high-RES (Renewable Energy Resources) penetration via integrated resource management is considered a promising strategy on different islands worldwide. For this work, the Portuguese island of Porto Santo is established as a test bench using actual data from the island. Given its geographical condition and energy needs, integrating the management of different resources (namely, the electric power grid with the water supply system, intensive in-land transportation electrification, and the energy storage applications) is analyzed by this work to achieve a power grid relying entirely on RES. The energy storage utilization and the purposeful manipulations in demand patterns have been perceived as instruments to reduce RES availability and consumption mismatch. Electric Vehicles (EV) could be perceived as a reliable alternative to centralized storage systems, acting either as a load or power resource (generator), providing the required flexibility for power systems to uptake the... Electrochemical Hydrogen Production Powered by PV/CSP Hybrid Power Plants: A Modelling Approach for Cost Optimal System Design
Andreas Rosenstiel, Nathalie Monnerie, Jürgen Dersch, Martin Roeb, Robert Pitz-Paal, Christian Sattler
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: alkaline electrolysis, concentrated solar power, levelized cost of hydrogen, photovoltaics, solar hydrogen
Global trade of green hydrogen will probably become a vital factor in reaching climate neutrality. The sunbelt of the Earth has a great potential for large-scale hydrogen production. One promising pathway to solar hydrogen is to use economically priced electricity from photovoltaics (PV) for electrochemical water splitting. However, storing electricity with batteries is still expensive and without storage only a small operating capacity of electrolyser systems can be reached. Combining PV with concentrated solar power (CSP) and thermal energy storage (TES) seems a good pathway to reach more electrolyser full load hours and thereby lower levelized costs of hydrogen (LCOH). This work introduces an energy system model for finding cost-optimal designs of such PV/CSP hybrid hydrogen production plants based on a global optimization algorithm. The model includes an operational strategy which improves the interplay between PV and CSP part, allowing also to store PV surplus electricity as heat.... [more]

Keywords: benchmarking, data envelopment analysis (DEA), efficiency, three stage DEA, three stage virtual frontier DEA, variable reduction, virtual frontier DEA
Electric utility regulators and policy makers implement incentive-based regulation to improve electric utilities efficiency or to manage the cost of electricity. However, poorly implemented regulation may produce undesired results such as low reliability or poor quality of service. Moreover, the competition within the electricity sector is likely to be low because of the high barriers to entry, vertically integrated electric utilities, and high capital requirements. Therefore, benchmarking exercises allow policy makers and regulators to gauge the relative efficiency of electric utilities and help them to reward or penalize the electric utilities accordingly. In this study, we examined the variables that significantly influence the efficiency of electric utilities and developed an optimum method to measure the efficiency of the electric utilities. The results of the efficiency measurement were then used to rank the electric utilities. The result of this study indicates that there are 13... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: environmental impact, hydropower, hydropower regulation
We analyzed United States Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) documents prepared for 29 recently licensed hydropower projects and created two novel datasets to improve understanding of the environmental study life cycle, defined here as the process that begins with an environmental study being requested by a hydropower stakeholder or regulator, and ends with the study either being rejected or approved/conducted. Our two datasets consisted of summaries of information taken from (1), study determination letters prepared by FERC for 23 projects that were using the integrated licensing process, and (2), environmental study submittals and issuances tracked and attributed to seven projects using the FERC record. Our objective was to use the two resulting environmental life cycle datasets to understand which types of environmental studies are approved, rejected, and implemented during FERC licensing, and how consistently those types of studies are required across multiple hydropower p... Techno-Economic Aspects of Noble Gases as Monitoring Tracers
Ulrich Wolfgang Weber, Niko Kampman, Anja Sundal
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon capture and storage, cost calculation, inherent distinctiveness, leakage detection, monitoring and verification, noble gases, tracer addition
A comprehensive monitoring program is an integral part of the safe operation of geological CO2 storage projects. Noble gases can be used as geochemical tracers to detect a CO2 anomaly and identify its origin, since they display unique signatures in the injected CO2 and naturally occurring geological fluids and gases of the storage site complex. In this study, we assess and demonstrate the suitability of noble gases in source identification of CO2 anomalies even when natural variability and analytical uncertainties are considered. Explicitly, injected CO2 becomes distinguishable from shallow fluids (e.g., subsea gas seeps) due to its inheritance of the radiogenic signature (e.g., high He) of deep crustal fluids by equilibration with the formation water. This equilibration also results in the CO2 inheriting a distinct Xe concentration and Xe/noble gas elemental ratios, which enable the CO2 to be differentiated from deep crustal hydrocarbon gases that may be in the vicinity of a storage r... McKenzie Thomas, Kimberly L. Jensen, Dayton M. Lambert, Burton C. English, Christopher D. Clark, Forbes R. Walker
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biochar, Biofuels, consumer preferences, feedstock, potting mix
Biochar is a co-product of advanced biofuels production from feedstocks including food, agricultural, wood wastes, or dedicated energy crops. Markets for soil amendments using biochar are emerging, but little is known about consumer preferences and willingness to pay (WTP) for these products or the depth of the products’ market potential for this product. This research provides WTP estimates for potting mix amended with 25% biochar, conditioned on consumer demographics and attitudes about product information labeling. Data were collected with an online survey of 577 Tennessee home gardeners. WTP was elicited through a referendum contingent valuation. Consumer WTP for an 8.81 L bag of 25% biochar potting mix is $8.52; a premium of $3.53 over conventional potting mix. Demographics and attitudes toward biofuels and the environment influence WTP. Biochar amounts demanded are projected for the study area’s potential market. Optimal prices, profits, and market shares are estimated across dif... [more]

Forecasting future driving conditions such as acceleration, velocity, and driver behaviors can greatly contribute to safety, mobility, and sustainability issues in the development of new energy vehicles (NEVs). In this brief, a review of existing velocity prediction techniques is studied from the perspective of traffic flow and vehicle lateral dynamics for the first time. A classification framework for velocity prediction in NEVs is presented where various state-of-the-art approaches are put forward. Firstly, we investigate road traffic flow models, under which a driving-scenario-based assessment is introduced. Secondly, vehicle speed prediction methods for NEVs are given where an extensive discussion on traffic flow model classification based on traffic big data and artificial intelligence is carried out. Thirdly, the influence of vehicle lateral dynamics and correlation control methods for vehicle speed prediction are reviewed. Suitable applications of each approach are presented acc... [more]
Optimization for Data-Driven Preventive Control Using Model Interpretation and Augmented Dataset
Junyu Ren, Benyu Li, Ming Zhao, Hengchu Shi, Hao You, Jinfu Chen
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: ADASYN, augmented dataset, differential evolution, model interpretation, preventive control, transient stability
Transient stability preventive control (TSPC) ensures that power systems have a sufficient stability margin by adjusting power flow before faults occur. The generation of TSPC measures requires accuracy and efficiency. In this paper, a novel model interpretation-based multi-fault coordinated data-driven preventive control optimization strategy is proposed. First, an augmented dataset covering the fault information is constructed, enabling the transient stability assessment (TSA) model to discriminate the system stability under different fault scenarios. Then, the adaptive synthetic sampling (ADASYN) method is implemented to deal with the imbalanced instances of power systems. Next, an instance-based machine model interpretation tool, Shapley additive explanations (SHAP), is embedded to explain the TSA model’s predictions and to find out the most effective control objects, thus narrowing the number of control objects. Finally, differential evolution is deployed to optimize the generatio... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cyber physical system (CPS), packet delivery ratio (PDR), QualNet, reliability, risk assessment, smart grid, smart grid cyber physical system (SGCPS), synchrophasor communication network
The smart grid (SG), which has revolutionized the power grid, is being further improved by using the burgeoning cyber physical system (CPS) technology. The conceptualization of SG using CPS, which is referred to as the smart grid cyber physical system (SGCPS), has gained a momentum with the synchrophasor measurements. The edifice of the synchrophasor system is its communication network referred to as a synchrophasor communication network (SCN), which is used to communicate the synchrophasor data from the sensors known as phasor measurement units (PMUs) to the control center known as the phasor data concentrator (PDC). However, the SCN is vulnerable to hardware and software failures that introduce risk. Thus, an appropriate risk assessment framework for the SCN is needed to alleviate the risk in the protection and control of the SGCPS. In this direction, a comprehensive risk assessment framework has been proposed in this article for three types of SCNs, namely: dedicated SCN, shared SCN... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: economic growth, globalization, innovation activity, international trade
This paper uncovers linkages between oil price uncertainty, total factor productivity (TFP) growth, and critical indicators of knowledge production and spillovers. It contributes to the literature by investigating the effects of oil price volatility on TFP growth, controlling for two different channels for TFP growth; benefits from the quality of the national innovation system and from adopting new technologies. We use an unbalanced panel for 28 European Union countries for the period from 1990 to 2018. We find that oil price uncertainty has a negative and statistically significant effect on TFP growth, even after we control for technological advancements and the effects of globalization. We also find that the scale of research and innovation and international trade are positive contributors to TFP growth.

Keywords: China, concentrated solar power, Rankine power cycle, supercritical carbon-dioxide power cycle, techno-economics
China intends to develop its renewable energy sector in order to cut down on its pollution levels. Concentrated solar power (CSP) technologies are expected to play a key role in this agenda. This study evaluated the technical and economic performance of a 100 MW solar tower CSP in Tibet, China, under different heat transfer fluids (HTF), i.e., Salt (60% NaNO3 40% KNO3) or HTF A, and Salt (46.5% LiF 11.5% NaF 42% KF) or HTF B under two different power cycles, namely supercritical CO2 and Rankine. Results from the study suggest that the Rankine power cycle with HTF A and B recorded capacity factors (CF) of 39% and 40.3%, respectively. The sCO2 power cycle also recorded CFs of 41% and 39.4% for HTF A and HTF B, respectively. A total of 359 GWh of energy was generated by the sCO2 system with HTF B, whereas the sCO2 system with HTF A generated a total of 345 GWh in the first year. The Rankine system with HTF A generated a total of 341 GWh, while the system with B as its HTF produced a total... [more]
Dynamics of Electricity Production against the Backdrop of Climate Change: A Case Study of Hydropower Plants in Poland
Katarzyna Kubiak-Wójcicka, Leszek Szczęch
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hydroelectricity, Poland, renewable energy sources (RES), small hydropower plant (SHP)
Renewable energy sources (RES) play an important role in the European Union’s energy sector as a result of the energy policy framework adopted. Its share in the final energy consumption varies depending on the country and the adopted energy policy. The article presents the structure of electricity production from renewable energy sources in Poland in the years 2002−2019. It was found that the share of energy production from hydroelectric power plants in Poland in relation to the amount of energy produced from renewable energy sources in the analyzed years has strongly decreased. The reason for this state was an increase in the production of energy coming from wind and biomass energy combined with an increase in subsidies for these energy producers. Additionally, unstable hydrological conditions, mainly low river flows, may be the reason for the low share of energy produced in power plants. As a case study, data for five small hydropower plants (SHP) located on the Gwda river (north-wes... [more]
Exploring the Distribution of Traffic Flow for Shared Human and Autonomous Vehicle Roads
Huanping Li, Jian Wang, Guopeng Bai, Xiaowei Hu
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: arbitrary proportion, autonomous vehicles, redistribution, speed change
In order to explore the changes that autonomous vehicles would bring to the current traffic system, we analyze the car-following behavior of different traffic scenarios based on an anti-collision theory and establish a traffic flow model with an arbitrary proportion (p) of autonomous vehicles. Using calculus and difference methods, a speed transformation model is established which could make the autonomous/human-driven vehicles maintain synchronized speed changes. Based on multi-hydrodynamic theory, a mixed traffic flow model capable of numerical calculation is established to predict the changes in traffic flow under different proportions of autonomous vehicles, then obtain the redistribution characteristics of traffic flow. Results show that the reaction time of autonomous vehicles has a decisive influence on traffic capacity; the q-k curve for mixed human/autonomous traffic remains in the region between the q-k curves for 100% human and 100% autonomous traffic; the participation of a... April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: building materials, heat and moisture transfer, innovative ventilation system, rising damp
Signs of wetness in housing are a significant obstacle to the renovation and energy rehabilitation of old and energy-intensive heritage buildings, especially in cold climates. Thus, in order to avoid the numerous possibilities of degradation caused by the moisture transfer phenomena in the building envelope, the a disruptive aeraulic process, which focuses on the ventilation of an air gap between the thermal insulation and the wet wall, has been designed and its assessed. This system avoids the presence of liquid water at the wall surface by maintaining the hygrothermal balance within the wet wall. This enables the mechanical durability of the supporting structure, the absence of biological activity and/or frost and, hence, the durability of the thermal insulation. These issues are investigated through a case study based on a real site. Over a year of measurements, the wet wall was constantly maintained in hygroscopic balance, around 90% RH, guaranteeing the preservation of its mechani... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: activity recognition, clustering, GPS data, mining machinery, sensor data
Fast-growing methods of automatic data acquisition allow for collecting various types of data from the production process. This entails developing methods that are able to process vast amounts of data, providing generalised knowledge about the analysed process. Appropriate use of this knowledge can be the basis for decision-making, leading to more effective use of the company’s resources. This article presents the approach for data analysis aimed at determining the operating states of a wheel loader and the place where it operates based on the recorded data. For this purpose, we have used several methods, e.g., for clustering and classification, namely: DBSCAN, CART, C5.0. Our approach has allowed for the creation of decision rules that recognise the operating states of the machine. In this study, we have taken into account the GPS signal readings, and thanks to this, we have indicated the differences in machine operation within the designated states in the open pit and at the mine bas... April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: combustion, Exergy, Exergy Efficiency, fuel, physical optimum, process evaluation
Combustion processes continue to be essential for the energy supply sector. A reliable energetic evaluation of these processes is crucial, particularly since the pollutants resulting from combustion have a significant impact on global warming. This work evaluates a combustion using the exergetic evaluation and the Physical Optimum (PhO) as it is described in VDI-Guideline 4663. Differences between PhO and exergy are investigated, allowing a distinct differentiation and examining the PhO’s added value in combustion analysis. Based on the evaluation of a simulated methane combustion, this paper shows that the PhO-Factor may be used to evaluate combustion processes. However, it shows that the PhO of a combustion process is a simplification of this fuels exergy and does not provide advantages to the exergy evaluation. Nevertheless, an adaption of the PhO is not carried out in the context of this work since the minimal deviation of the simulated energy indicators currently cannot justify an... [more]
