Sub-Transient Response of the DSC Controlled Inverter under Fault
Bane Popadic, Boris Dumnic, Dragan Milicevic, Luka Strezoski, Natasa Petrovic
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed energy resources, grid connected converter, initial fault response
The most important element of the new active distribution system concept is the grid connected converter that needs to offer fault ride through capabilities. The new system topologies require new tools for fault state calculation that would consider different control methodologies. In that regard, this paper investigates the initial response of the grid connected inverter under fault that operates using new control methodology based on the integration of the delay signal cancellation. Using modern laboratory setup for testing of renewable energy sources and their integration in the power system the technique is weighed against the classical technique that does not provide the adequate control under unbalanced faults. Furthermore, through a set of specific experiments the paper demonstrates the behavior of the converter under fault, preparing the outline for the fault response modeling of distributed energy resources. Experimental results present the sub-transient period and the transie... [more]
Application-Oriented Reactive Power Management in German Distribution Systems Using Decentralized Energy Resources
Haonan Wang, Markus Kraiczy, Denis Mende, Sebastian Stöcklein, Martin Braun
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: application-oriented, decentralized energy resources, distribution system, grid interface, reactive power management, voltage problem
Due to higher penetration of renewable energy sources, grid reinforcements, and the utilization of local voltage control strategies, a significant change in the reactive power behavior as well as an increased demand for additional reactive power flexibility in the German power system can be predicted. In this paper, an application-oriented reactive power management concept is proposed, which allows distribution system operators (DSO) to enable a certain amount of reactive power flexibility at the grid interfaces while supporting voltage imitations in the grid. To evaluate its feasibility, the proposed concept is applied for real medium voltage grids in the south of Germany and is investigated comprehensively in different case studies. The results prove the feasibility and reliability of the proposed concept, which allows the DSO to control the reactive power exchange at grid interfaces without causing undesired local voltage problems. In addition, it can be simply adjusted and widely a... [more]

Thomas Carrière, Rodrigo Amaro e Silva, Fuqiang Zhuang, Yves-Marie Saint-Drenan, Philippe Blanc
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cloud motion vector, geostationary satellite, probabilistic forecast, PV, solar
Probabilistic solar forecasting is an issue of growing relevance for the integration of photovoltaic (PV) energy. However, for short-term applications, estimating the forecast uncertainty is challenging and usually delegated to statistical models. To address this limitation, the present work proposes an approach which combines physical and statistical foundations and leverages on satellite-derived clear-sky index (kc) and cloud motion vectors (CMV), both traditionally used for deterministic forecasting. The forecast uncertainty is estimated by using the CMV in a different way than the one generally used by standard CMV-based forecasting approach and by implementing an ensemble approach based on a Gaussian noise-adding step to both the kc and the CMV estimations. Using 15-min average ground-measured Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI) data for two locations in France as reference, the proposed model shows to largely surpass the baseline probabilistic forecast Complete History Persistence... Development of a Framework for Activation of Aggregator Led Flexibility
Sarah O’Connell, Marcus Martin Keane
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: aggregator, data-driven models, demand response, energy flexibility, mixed-integer linear programming
This paper presents a novel framework architecture for an online, real-time flexibility assessment and activation platform targeted at unlocking the flexibility potential of commercial buildings and smaller industrial sites, thereby enabling greater levels of renewable grid integration. Renewable integration targets in Europe of up to 40% of power generation from renewable sources by 2030 and over 90% by 2050 aim to decarbonize the electrical grid and increase electrification of transport, industry, and buildings. As renewable integration targets increase, participation in flexibility programs will be required from a much greater range of buildings and sites to balance grids hosting high levels of renewable generation. In this paper, an online implementation of a standardized flexibility assessment methodology, previously developed for offline contract negotiations between stakeholders, is modified to automate the assessment. The automated assessment is then linked to an aggregator-bas... [more]

Evance Chaima, Jijian Lian, Chao Ma, Yusheng Zhang, Sheila Kavwenje
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: load satisfaction, Optimization, peak electricity demand, photovoltaic, pumped hydro storage, renewable energy generation
Solar energy is currently dispatched ahead of other renewable energy sources. For the first time, this study presents a concept of exploiting temporary−periodical runoff discharge in the Shire River. Pumped hydro storage−photovoltaic plant (PHS−PV) was optimized to satisfy the all-day peak electricity demand in Malawi. The effect of varying the net head on the PHS system in both the generation and pumping operation modes was investigated. The bi-objective optimization evaluated the system reliability for day-time and night-time operation together with implied costs of investment for the whole system. The optimized system generated above 53% of added power as contrasted to single-source power generation from the existing hydropower plants. The estimated optimal capacities were 182 MWp (solar PV) and 86 MW (PHS plant). These additional optimal capacities achieved a 99.8% maximum system reliability (Loss of Power Supply Probability—LPSP—of 0.2%) and Levelized Cost of Energy—LCOE—of 0.13 U... [more]

Jung-Hun Lee, Woo-Hyun Kim, Hak-Ju Lee, Jun-Oh Kim, Woo-Kyu Chae
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed generations, loop distribution system, protection coordination, symmetric component
Power utilities worldwide commonly use the radial distribution system because of its advantages of being simple in structure and having relatively inexpensive installation costs. It has a disadvantage in that its power supply reliability is low because the load side of the fault section will suffer from an outage in the event of a fault in the system. However, recently, with ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) development, system reliability is required to be high as the outage-susceptible loads increase. In addition, the increase in the connection of distributed resources such as renewable energy and electric vehicles is making it impossible to predict the power flow and reducing line utilization. Therefore, a loop power distribution system is proposed as a measure to solve this problem. Because all buses (nodes) in a loop distribution system have two or more power supply routes, they are more reliable than the radial system. It allows them to improve line utilization by... [more]

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: gasification, greenhouse gases, internal combustion engine, life-cycle assessment, rice straw
This study assessed the environmental performance and energy efficiency of electricity generation from rice straw using a combined gasification and internal combustion engine (G/ICE). A life cycle assessment (LCA) was performed to consider the conversion to electricity of rice straw, the production of which was based on the Philippine farming practice. Rice straw is treated as a milled rice coproduct and assumes an environmental burden which is allocated by mass. The results of an impact assessment for climate change was used directly in a system dynamic model to plot the accumulated greenhouse gas emissions from the system and compare with various cases in order to perform sensitivity analyses. At a productivity of 334 kWh/t, the global warming potential (GWP) of the system is equal to 0.642 kg CO2-eq/MJ, which is 27% lower than the GWP of rice straw on-site burning. Mitigating biogenic methane emissions from flooded rice fields could reduce the GWP of the system by 34%, while zero ne... [more]
Power Maximization and Turbulence Intensity Management through Axial Induction-Based Optimization and Efficient Static Turbine Deployment

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: artificial bee colony, axial induction, differential evolution, hexagonal layouts, Particle Swarm Optimization, regular layouts, turbulence intensity, wind plant power maximization
Layout optimization is capable of increasing turbine density and reducing wake effects in wind plants. However, such optimized layouts do not guarantee fixed T-2-T distances in any direction and would be disadvantageous if reduction in computational costs due to turbine set-point updates is also a priority. Regular turbine layouts are considered basic because turbine coordinates can be determined intuitively without the application of any optimization algorithms. However, such layouts can be used to intentionally create directions of large T-2-T distances, hence, achieve the gains of standard/non-optimized operations in these directions, while also having close T-2-T distances in other directions from which the gains of optimized operations can be enjoyed. In this study, a regular hexagonal turbine layout is used to deploy turbines within a fixed area dimension, and a turbulence intensity-constrained axial induction-based plant-wide optimization is carried out using particle swarm, art... April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: domestic hot water, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar thermal system, solar water heating system, space heating
Currently, the economy of Middle Eastern countries relies heavily on fossil fuel sources. The direct and indirect adverse consequences of fossil fuel utilization for power generation enforce the region’s countries to raise the share of renewable energy. In this context, various incentive policies have been developed to encourage the residential and industrial sectors to support a portion of energy needs through renewable energy resources. In this case, a solar water heating system (SWHS) as an application of solar thermal technology provides some of the heat energy requirements for domestic hot water (DHW) and space heating, supported conventionally by electricity or natural gas, or even other fossil fuels. This paper reviews the feasibility of the SWHS in the Middle East region from technical and economical standpoints and investigates some of the progress, challenges, and barriers toward this market. The pay-back times and CO2 emission reduction under different incentive frameworks a... [more]

Keywords: cyber-physical system (CPS), cybersecurity, distributed secondary control (DSC), DNP3, GOOSE, microgrids, Modbus, SMV, vulnerabilities
The integration of variable distributed generations (DGs) and loads in microgrids (MGs) has made the reliance on communication systems inevitable for information exchange in both control and protection architectures to enhance the overall system reliability, resiliency and sustainability. This communication backbone in turn also exposes MGs to potential malicious cyber attacks. To study these vulnerabilities and impacts of various cyber attacks, testbeds play a crucial role in managing their complexity. This research work presents a detailed study of the development of a real-time co-simulation testbed for inverter-based MGs. It consists of a OP5700 real-time simulator, which is used to emulate both the physical and cyber layer of an AC MG in real time through HYPERSIM software; and SEL-3530 Real-Time Automation Controller (RTAC) hardware configured with ACSELERATOR RTAC SEL-5033 software. A human−machine interface (HMI) is used for local/remote monitoring and control. The creation and... [more]

Wei Yan, Said Juma Kambi, Xin Huang, Hai Lin, Hailong Liu, Jingen Deng
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: conductor setting depth, deep-water drilling, set-up time, shallow soil strength recovery
Jetted conductor setting depth is crucial for deep-water drilling. This paper presents an innovative method for determining the shallow soil resistance strength recovery factor based on the field data of Equatorial Guinea bay. It shows that the soil strength recovery factor of Equatorial Guinea bay is lower than that of the Gulf of Mexico. The conductor setting depth calculation referring to other place will have a high risk of wellhead sinking. According to the newly established designing charts, the conductor setting depth was recommended for the S1 well. Each preferred set-up period requires a specific setting depth. If the chosen set-up period is 2 days, the expected setting depth of a 36″ conductor should be 250 ft (76.2 m) and, similarly, 295 ft (89.9 m) for a 30″ conductor. The relationship between set-up period and surface conductor setting depth is established as well. Wellhead landed load appears to be the crucial factor for determining the conductor setting depth. The ration... [more]

Zihan Liu, Huaqing Ma, Yongzhi Zhao
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFD-DEM, fluidized bed, Mixing, non-spherical particle, polyhedron
Fluidization of non-spherical particles is a common process in energy industries and chemical engineering. Understanding the fluidization of non-spherical particles is important to guide relevant processes. There already have been numerous studies which investigate the behaviors of different non-spherical particles during fluidization, but the investigations of the fluidization of polyhedral particles do not receive much attention. In this study, the investigation of the fluidization of polyhedral particles described by the polyhedron approach is conducted with a numerical CFD-DEM method. Experiments of the fluidization of three kinds of polyhedral particles are conducted under the same condition with corresponding simulations to validate the accuracy of our CFD-DEM model. The results indicate that our CFD-DEM model with the polyhedron approach can predict the behaviors of polyhedral particles with reasonable accuracy. Fluidization behaviors of different polyhedral particles are also i... [more]
A Simple Method for Detecting Partial Shading in PV Systems
Waleed Al Abri, Rashid Al Abri, Hassan Yousef, Amer Al-Hinai
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cloud shading, global MPPT, object shading, partial shading, partial shading detection method
Partial shading conditions (PSCs) can significantly reduce the output energy produced by photovoltaic (PV) systems. Moreover, when such conditions occur, conventional and advanced maximum power point tracking (MPPT) systems fail to operate the PV system at its peak because the bypassing diodes may cause the PV system to become trapped at a low power point when they are in conduction mode. The PV system can be operated at the global maximum power point (MPP) with the help of global peak searching tools. However, the frequent use of these tools will reduce the output of PV systems since they force the PV system to operate outside its power region while scanning the I-V curve in order to determine the global MPP. Thus, the global peak searching tools should be deployed only when a PSC occurs. In this paper, a simple and accurate method is proposed for detecting PSCs by means of monitoring the sign of voltage changes (positive or negative). The method predicts a PSC if the sign of successi... [more]
A Combustion Regime-Based Model for Large Eddy Simulation
Eugenio Giacomazzi, Donato Cecere
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: large eddy simulation, micro-scale interaction, premixed combustion regimes, premixed turbulent combustion, subgrid scale model
The aim of this work is to propose a unified (generalized) closure of the chemical source term in the context of Large Eddy Simulation able to cover all the regimes of turbulent premixed combustion. Turbulence/combustion scale interaction is firstly analyzed: a new perspective to look at commonly accepted combustion diagrams is provided based on the evidence that actual turbulent flames can experience locally several combustion regimes although global non-dimensional numbers would locate such flames in a single specific operating point of the standard combustion diagram. The deliverable is a LES subgrid scale model for turbulent premixed flames named Localized Turbulent Scales Model (LTSM). This is founded on the estimation of the local reacting volume fraction of a computational cell that is related to the local turbulent and laminar flame speeds and to the local flame thickness.

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: data envelopment analysis, environmental adjustment, Malmquist productivity index, productivity, technical efficiency
Global competition and climate change are changing the nature of economic activity and impose the urgent need to have environmentally sensitive productivity growth. The paper addresses both desirable and undesirable output to assess technical efficiency and productivity changes, as well as evaluate the importance of an energy input in the production function and productivity change differentials in the European Union (EU) over the period 2000−2018. To that end, it uses output-oriented data envelopment analysis and Malmquist productivity analysis. The results reveal that the EU is facing significant challenges due to a decreasing trend in technical efficiency and slow productivity growth. The absence of major improvements in human resource performance has reduced the benefits of technological innovations which are the main source of productivity growth. Additionally, the results show that energy use did not critically influence efficiency and productivity.

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, Biofuels, energy recovery, gelatinous wastewater, protein degradation
Gelatin production is the most industry polluting process where huge amounts of raw organic materials and chemicals (HCl, NaOH, Ca2+) are utilized in the manufacturing accompanied by voluminous quantities of end-pipe effluent. The gelatinous wastewater (GWW) contains a large fraction of protein and lipids with biodegradability (BOD/COD ratio) exceeding 0.6. Thus, it represents a promising low-cost substrate for the generation of biofuels, i.e., H2 and CH4, by the anaerobic digestion process. This review comprehensively describes the anaerobic technologies employed for simultaneous treatment and energy recovery from GWW. The emphasis was afforded on factors affecting the biofuels productivity from anaerobic digestion of GWW, i.e., protein concentration, organic loading rate (OLR), hydraulic retention time (HRT), the substrate to inoculum (S0/X0) ratio, type of mixed culture anaerobes, carbohydrates concentration, volatile fatty acids (VFAs), ammonia and alkalinity/VFA ratio, and reactor... Optimal Sizing of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Considering Urban Traffic Flow for Smart Cities
Miguel Campaña, Esteban Inga, Jorge Cárdenas
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric vehicles, geo-referenced system, heterogeneous transportation, traffic analysis, urban traffic system
Achieving high penetration of electric vehicles (EVs) is one of the objectives proposed by the scientific community to mitigate the negative environmental impact caused by conventional mobility. The limited autonomy and the excessive time to recharge the battery discourage the final consumer from opting for new environmentally friendly mobility alternatives. Consequently, it is essential to provide the urban road network with charging infrastructure (CI) to ensure that the demand generated by EV users is met. The types of terminals to be considered in charging stations (CS) are fast and ultra-fast. The high energy requirements in these types of terminals could stress the electrical systems, reducing the quality of service. To size and forecast the resources needed in CI, it is of great interest to model and predict the maximum number of EVs, in each hour, that each CS will have to serve according to the geographic area in which they are located. Our proposal is not based on an assumed... [more]
Optimal Daily Trading of Battery Operations Using Arbitrage Spreads
Ekaterina Abramova, Derek Bunn
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Batteries, electricity, spreads, trading
An important revenue stream for electric battery operators is often arbitraging the hourly price spreads in the day-ahead auction. The optimal approach to this is challenging if risk is a consideration as this requires the estimation of density functions. Since the hourly prices are not normal and not independent, creating spread densities from the difference of separately estimated price densities is generally intractable. Thus, forecasts of all intraday hourly spreads were directly specified as an upper triangular matrix containing densities. The model was a flexible four-parameter distribution used to produce dynamic parameter estimates conditional upon exogenous factors, most importantly wind, solar and the day-ahead demand forecasts. These forecasts supported the optimal daily scheduling of a storage facility, operating on single and multiple cycles per day. The optimization is innovative in its use of spread trades rather than hourly prices, which this paper argues, is more attra... [more]
A Novel Driving Scheme for Three-Phase Bearingless Induction Machine with Split Winding
Francisco Elvis Carvalho Souza, Werbet Silva, Andrés Ortiz Salazar, José Paiva, Diego Moura, Elmer Rolando Llanos Villarreal
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bearingless, DSP, induction motor, radial position control
In order to reduce the costs of implementing the radial position control system of a three-phase bearingless machine with split winding, this article proposes a driving method that uses only two phases of the system instead of the three-phase traditional one. It reduces from six to four the number of inverter legs, drivers, sensors, and current controllers necessary to drive and control the system. To justify the proposal, this new power and control configuration was applied to a 250 W machine controlled by a digital signal processor (DSP). The results obtained demonstrated that it is possible to carry out the radial position control through two phases, without loss of performance in relation to the conventional three-phase drive and control system.

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy storage systems, microgrid control, microgrids, renewable energy systems
A microgrid (MG) is a discrete energy system consisting of an interconnection of distributed energy sources and loads capable of operating in parallel with or independently from the main power grid. The microgrid concept integrated with renewable energy generation and energy storage systems has gained significant interest recently, triggered by increasing demand for clean, efficient, secure, reliable and sustainable heat and electricity. However, the concept of efficient integration of energy storage systems faces many challenges (e.g., charging, discharging, safety, size, cost, reliability and overall management). Additionally, proper implementation and justification of these technologies in MGs cannot be done without energy management systems, which control various aspects of power management and operation of energy storage systems in microgrids. This review discusses different energy storage technologies that can have high penetration and integration in microgrids. Moreover, their w... [more]
