April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: capsule vehicle, electrodynamic suspension, guidance stiffness, levitation stiffness, vehicle dynamics
A levitation system based on sidewall electrodynamic suspension (EDS) is considered for a capsule vehicle, which is a next-generation high-speed transportation system currently being studied. This levitation system does not require controlling of the gap between the guideway and the vehicle on which the superconducting electromagnet is mounted. However, when the vehicle is operated in a levitated state, the ride comfort is worse than that of the levitation system based on electromagnetic suspension (EMS), making it necessary to develop methods that can ensure good riding comfort. In addition, because the EDS system is complex and nonlinear with a combination of electromagnetics and mechanical dynamics, it is complicated to analyze the dynamic characteristics of the capsule vehicle, and the corresponding numerical analysis is time-consuming. Therefore, to easily understand the running dynamics of a capsule vehicle in the sidewall EMS system, the magnetic suspension characteristics corre... [more]

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: buildings, comfort control, evolutionary algorithms, fuzzy modelling, fuzzy reinforcement learning, multi agent control systems, occupancy estimation, stochastic processes
This paper focuses on the development of a multi agent control system (MACS), combined with a stochastic based approach for occupancy estimation. The control framework aims to maintain the comfort levels of a building in high levels and reduce the overall energy consumption. Three independent agents, each dedicated to the thermal comfort, the visual comfort, and the indoor air quality, are deployed. A stochastic model describing the CO2 concentration has been studied, focused on the occupancy estimation problem. A probabilistic approach, as well as an evolutionary algorithm, are used to provide insights on the stochastic model. Moreover, in order to induce uncertainty, parameters are treated in a fuzzy modelling framework and the results on the occupancy estimation are investigated. In the control framework, to cope with the continuous state-action space, the three agents utilise Fuzzy Q-learning. Simulation results highlight the precision of parameter and occupancy estimation, as well... [more]

Keywords: combustion and emissions, fuel injection pressure, injector geometry, simarouba oil methyl ester
Being an energy source of another origin, the compression ignition (CI) engine’s typical design parameters might not suit Simarouba oil methyl ester (SuOME). Present experimental investigation targets are determining the effects of engine design parameters, including fuel injection pressure and nozzle geometry, on the engine, concerning performance and emissions such as carbon monoxide (CO), unburnt hydrocarbon (HC), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), and smoke opacity, with SuOME as fuel. Comparisons of brake thermal efficiency (BTE) and different emissions from the engine tailpipe were performed for different fuel injection pressures and a number of injector holes and diameter of orifices were opened in the injector to find the optimum combination to run the engine with SuOME. It was observed that the combined effect of an increase in injection pressure of 240 bar from 205 bar, and increasing number of injector holes from three to six with reduced injector hole diameters from 0.2 to 0.3 mm, r... April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, counter-current mechanism, experimental validation, Process Intensification, REA, skim milk, spray drying
This research presents 3D steady-state simulations of a skim milk spray drying process in a counter-current configuration dryer. A two-phase flow involving gas and discrete phase is modeled using the Eulerian−Lagrangian model with two-way coupling between phases. The drying kinetics of skim milk is incorporated using the Reaction Engineering Approach. The model predictions are found to be in accordance with the experimental temperature measurements with a maximum average error of 5%. The validated computational model is employed further to study the effects of nozzle position, initial spray Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD), air inlet temperature, and feed rate on the temperature and moisture profiles, particle impact positions, drying histories, and product recovery at the outlet. The location of the nozzle upwards (≈23 cm) resulted in maximum product recovery and increased the mean particle residence time at the outlet. A similar trend was observed for the highest feed rate of 26 kg/h owing... [more]

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: efficiency maximization, inductive power transfer, numerical analysis, planar coils, wireless power transfer
In the article, a wireless charging system with the use of periodically arranged planar coils is presented. The efficiency of two wireless power transfer (WPT) systems with different types of inductors, i.e., circular and square planar coils is compared, and two models are proposed: analytical and numerical. With the appropriate selection of a load resistance, it is possible to obtain either the maximum efficiency or the maximum power of a receiver. Therefore, the system is analyzed at two optimum modes of operation: with the maximum possible efficiency and with the highest power transmitted to the load. The analysis of many variants of the proposed wireless power transfer solution was performed. The aim was to check the influence of the geometry of the coils and their type (circular or square) on the efficiency of the system. Changes in the number of turns, the distance between the coils (transmit and receive) as well as frequency are also taken into account. The results obtained from... [more]

Luca Salvadori, Annalisa Di Bernardino, Giorgio Querzoli, Simone Ferrari
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: atmospheric turbulence simulation, urban canyon, urban morphometry, Voronoi polygons, wind energy
The energy transition to more sustainable forms is currently ongoing worldwide, because of the environmental impacts produced by the non-renewable energy sources employed in the last decades. Among the main alternatives, wind plays a key role and, nowadays, innovative instruments, such as small-scale turbines allow for installation of wind turbines in urban areas. Their energy potential assessment requires high-accuracy simulations of the turbulent flows in the urban canopy layer, which, in turn, require detailed information about the geometrical properties of the basic element to classify urban surfaces, i.e., the urban canyon, often not available. In this work, we propose a novel automatic method, based on Voronoi graph, to univocally identify urban canyons and to extract their geometrical parameters from online available GIS (Geographic Information System) data, and test it on four European cities that differ in size, story and location. Results show the capability of the method to... [more]

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adsorption cooling, few layer graphene, heat transfer characteristic, MIL-101, specific cooling power, water chiller
MIL-101 is a promising metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) material in adsorption chiller application due to its high adsorption capacity for water and excellent adsorption/desorption cyclic stability. Few layer graphene (FLG) as the thermal conductive additive was added into MIL-101 to improve inferior heat transfer of MIL-101 in the adsorption cooling process. The heat transfer characteristic of MIL-101/FLG adsorber and the adsorption cooling performance of the MIL-101/FLG-water working pair were studied. Results show that thermal conductivity of MIL-101/20%FLG composite is 5.79-6.54 times that of MIL-101. Adding FLG is conducive to the formation of heat transfer channels in MIL-101/FLG adsorber and the rapid removal of adsorption heat. The heating and cooling rate of MIL-101/FLG adsorber is ~2.2 times that of MIL-101 adsorber. Under typical adsorption water chiller conditions, the specific cooling power (SCP) and coefficient of performance (COP) of the MIL-101/FLG-water working pair is... [more]

Keywords: aviation, Biofuels, feasibility, georeferenced, GHG mitigation, Sustainability
For international civil aviation to be able to significantly reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) needs to be made feasible. This paper presents the results of an assessment of the feasibility of production of SAF in Brazil, considering three certified routes, based on the dedicated production of eucalyptus, soy, sugarcane and corn. The results presented here refer to the production of biomass in selected locations, aiming to reduce GHG emissions and minimise production costs. Considering that the opportunity costs of feedstocks were not observed, the minimum selling price (MSP) of SAF in the reference case was estimated at 13.4 EUR·GJ−1 for the production based on soybean oil (HEFA-SPK route), 21.0 EUR·GJ−1 for the production based on ethanol from sugarcane and corn (ATJ-SPK) and 32.0 EUR·GJ−1 from eucalyptus (FT-SPK). These values refer to SAF’s nth industrial plant and biomass costs that are compatible with the current agricultural y... [more]

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CPV/T system, energy and economic analysis, experimental model, users of different sizes
The costs of concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) and concentrating photovoltaic and thermal (CPV/T) systems are highly reduced in the last years because of their increasing diffusion. The unit power cost also depends on the plant size. Hence, the main aim of this paper is to analyze the feasibility of a CPV/T system adopted for users with increasing sizes located in Salerno (Italy): the house, the hotel, and the food industry. An experimental model was developed for an accurate evaluation of the electrical and thermal powers supplied by the CPV/T system when direct normal irradiation (DNI) and environmental temperature vary. A modular configuration of a line-focus CPV/T system was sized to match the electrical and thermal loads of each user. The current economic results, together with a forecast till the year 2025, were discussed. In 2025, for the same CPV system adopted for the domestic user, the net present value (NPVs) are expected to increase by 6.7% and 13% in pessimistic and optimis... [more]

Keywords: combined heat and power (CHP), multi-objective optimization, organic Rankine cycle (ORC), system comparison, working fluid selection
Cogeneration of heat and power systems based on the organic Rankine cycle (ORC-CHP) has been proven to be an effective way to utilize waste heat at medium and low temperatures. In this work, three ORC-CHP (combined heat and power based on organic Rankine cycle) systems are simulated and compared, including the SS (serial system), the CS (the condensation system), and the SS/CS. The multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) is used to optimize the three systems respectively to achieve higher exergy efficiency and profit ratio of investment (PRI). The optimal thermal-economic performance is obtained. Twelve organic fluids are adopted to evaluate their performance as working fluids. The calculation results show that SS has the highest exergy efficiency, while SS/CS has the best economic performance. Compared with the highest exergy efficiency of SS and the best economic performance of SS/CS, CS will be the optimal solution considering these two objective functions. Under the optimal workin... Keywords: drilling fluid, experimental design, filter-cake thickness, filtrate volume, microemulsion
In this work, nonionic surfactant NP100 and pine oil influences on the filtrate volume (FV) and the filter-cake thickness (thkns) of microemulsified drilling fluids were studied. A ternary phase diagram was obtained to define the microemulsion region, where a 2k factorial design was used with the addition of four center points and axial points. Twelve microemulsion points were defined and used later in the formulation of the investigated drilling fluids. The results showed that the increase in the surfactant and pine oil’s concentration increased FV and thkns, withthe oil phase being the most influential component in the filtrate volume and the surfactant being the most influential in the filter-cake thickness. Statistically significant models were obtained. The optimal concentrations were determined for the lowest FV and thkns; 45% of surfactant and 5% of pine oil for the filtrate volume (1.3 mL), and 45% of surfactant and 15% of pine oil for the filter-cake thickness (0.64 mm).

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: current ripple, optimal SVPWM modulation, power density, three-phase isolated matrix converter
Three-phase isolated matrix converters enable bidirectional power conversion and galvanic isolation, and they are suitable for widespread applications in industry. However, excessive DC-link current ripple not only increases the inductor loss and switching loss but also causes more electromagnetic interference and grid current distortion. Traditionally, increasing DC-link inductance or switching frequency can reduce the current ripple to a certain extent, but it is not cost-effective due to the bulky size of the inductor and higher switching losses. To address the above issue, optimizing the modulation control strategy is more attractive. This paper proposes a new SVPWM strategy to reduce the current ripple. First, the inherent limitation of the conventional modulation scheme is revealed. Then, the new optimal modulation scheme is proposed for the isolated matrix converters to reduce the current ripple without increasing the DC-link inductor or switching frequency. Moreover, the power... [more]

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bifacial photovoltaic panels, renewable energy sources, solar power
This paper discusses the conversion of solar irradiance energy into electricity. Double-sided (bifacial) panels are gaining increasing popularity in commercial applications due to the increased energy yield with a constant occupied mounting surface. However, the value of the additional energy yield produced by the back of the panel depends on several important factors. This paper presents the influence of working conditions on electricity generation in bifacial modules. This paper also investigates the influence of weather conditions, the module inclination angle, and the substrate beneath the panel surface on electricity generation. Fill factor and efficiency were calculated for each case included in the study scope. Based on the current voltage, power characteristics, and calculations, the module operation for different conditions was compared. It was observed that the optimal inclination angle to the surface is higher for the bifacial modules compared to the unilateral modules. The... [more]

Keywords: battery assistance, battery characterization, low-cost maintenance system, open hardware, relay matrix
The large increment expected in the diffusion of light-electric-vehicles will raise several issues that must be addressed to cope with this trend, including battery diagnostic and maintenance services. The battery system is the most expensive part in the majority of the e-mobility devices. Therefore, battery manufacturers tend to reduce the battery cost by using simple battery management systems that provide only basic safety features. Possible advanced functionalities are not implemented and the battery may lose performanceduring its use. Widely spread maintenance centers are thus required to support the mobility electrification process, but their diffusion is limited by the high cost ofprofessional battery characterization instruments. This work proposes an open-hardware low-cost battery maintenance tool architecture that can be used with common laboratory instruments. The tool is based on a relay-matrix and a battery monitor integrated circuit. It is able to completely characterize... [more]

Keywords: berthing, constrained optimization, Energy Efficiency, FMBS, harbour manoeuvring, ship control by joystick, simulator, thrust allocation
The International Maritime Organization adopted a strategy to reduce the total annual GHG emissions from international shipping by at least 50% by 2050, compared to 2008 levels. The European Union proposed an even farther reaching transformation: the European Commission adopted a set of proposals to make the EU’s transport policies fit for reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels. Therefore, all industrial actions in line and consistent with these strategies are essential. One of such activities may be a gradual transition from the most common independent controls of transport ships’ thrusters, propellers, and rudders to an integrated, power optimized, 3 degrees of freedom joystick control. In this paper, the full mission bridge simulator (FMBS) research on potential energy savings and, consequently, a GHG emission reduction, while steering a RoPax twin-screw ferry equipped with bow thrusters by a joystick control, is presented. A successful transformation of the energy and transportation sector is one of the main targets for our society today. Battery electric vehicles can play a key role in future renewable-based energy supply systems because of their ability to store electrical power. Additionally, they provide significant charging flexibility due to the long parking durations. In this paper, we provide insights into the temporal and power-specific flexibility behavior of three different vehicle fleets. These fleets are pool vehicles of office employees, a public authority, and a logistics company. Several parameters, such as the average charging power per charging event or the average plug-in duration per charging event, are discussed. Additionally, we investigate different charging rates and their impact on the temporal flexibility of the charging events. The data analysis shows that the logistics site has the most homogeneous charging profile as well as high charging flexibility, in contrast to the offic... [more]

Keywords: corrosion, current collector, Fuel Cells, printed circuit board (PCB), pulse electroplating
The effect of the Au coated printed circuit board (PCB) as a current collector on the performance of fuel cells is demonstrated. In this study, optimized pulse electroplating was introduced, which was found to be much more effective compared to the direct current (DC) plating for the PCB fabrication based on the passive area from the potentiodynamic polarization scan. Variable electrochemical parameters such as applied potential and frequency for the pulse electroplating method are controlled. Using the polarization tests, the corrosion behavior of the Au coated PCB layer was also observed. From these basic data, the coating methods and electrochemical parameters were systematically controlled to achieve efficient results for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). The stability test for the cell operation indicates that the micro DMFC with the Au coated PCB substrate formed at a frequency of 10 Hz exhibited the highest stability and performance. As a result, the Au coated PCB substrate us... [more]

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: airfoil pitching, dynamic stall model, ONERA, trailing edge flap, unsteady, vortex shedding
This article describes the development and testing of a modified, semi-empirical ONERA dynamic stall model for an airfoil with a trailing edge flap—a “smart airfoil”—pitching at reduced frequencies up to 0.1. The Reynolds number is 105. The model reconstructs the load fluctuations associated with the shedding of multiple dynamic stall vortices (DSVs) in a time-marching solution, which makes it suitable for real-time control of a trailing edge flap (TEF). No other model captures the effect of the DSVs on the aerodynamic loads on smart airfoils. The model was refined and tuned for force measurements on a smart NACA 643-618 airfoil model that was pitching with an inactive TEF and was validated against the measurements when the TEF was activated. A substantial laminar separation bubble can develop on this airfoil, which is challenging for modelers of the unsteady response. A closed-loop controller was designed offline in SIMULINK, and the output of the controller was applied to the TEF in... [more]

Keywords: different homogenous sites, force time-history analysis method, full steel-plate concrete (SC) containment, impact dynamics, large commercial aircraft impact
This paper aimed at evaluating the influence of different site conditions on the impact response of the structure of nuclear power plants (NPPs) against a large commercial aircraft. The lumped parameter site dynamic model recommended by the code of ASCE 4-98 was used to consider the different homogeneous sites. With respect to the excellent impact resistant performance of steel-plate concrete (SC) structure, the full SC containment is selected as the research object. The impact analysis of the full SC containment against a large commercial aircraft under different site conditions was carried out, based on the force time-history analysis method. The numerical results in terms of the displacement, plastic strain, local concrete damage, and different values of energy were evaluated. The results showed that: (1) For the relatively thin full SC containment, the impact response under the fixed boundary is the largest, while that calculated by other, different sites varies greatly, and there... Fossil fuel vehicles, emitting air toxics into the atmosphere, impose a heavy burden on the economy through additional health care expenses and ecological degradation. Air pollution is responsible for millions of deaths and chronic and acute health problems every year, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The fossil-fuel-based transportation system releases tons of toxic gases into the atmosphere putting human health at risk, especially in urban areas. This analysis aims to determine the economic burden of environmental and health impacts caused by Highway 401 traffic. Due to the high volume of vehicles driving on the Toronto Highway 401 corridor, there is an annual release of 3771 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). These emissions are mainly emitted onsite through the combustion of gasoline and diesel fuel. The integration of electric and hydrogen vehicles shows maximum reductions of 405−476 g CO2e per vehicle-kilometer. Besides these carbon dioxide emiss... [more]

Keywords: d-q vector control, graphical loop-shaping, H∞ controller, HVDC, PI controller, real-time HIL, robust controller, VSC
Voltage source converter (VSC) based HVDC systems are one of the most promising technologies for high voltage bulk power transmission. The reliability and stability of a VSC-based HVDC system greatly depends on the design of a proper controller for the inner decoupled d-q current loop. One of the major causes of instability in a properly tuned controller is due to system parameter variation. This paper presents the design of a fixed parameter robust controller for the inner decoupled d-q current loop for a VSC-based HVDC system to deal with the uncertainties due to system parameter variations. The method of multiplicative uncertainty is employed in the robust design to model the variations in the system parameters. The robust control design was realized through a graphical procedure known as the loop-shaping technique. The graphical loop shaping technique is a much simpler and more straightforward method compared to the traditional H∞-based algorithms for robust controller design. The... [more]

Keywords: distorted voltage, distributed generation, grid current control, inverter connected to the grid, Model Predictive Control
This research paper presents a model of predictive control with a modulator for the inverter linked to the electrical grid, using the stationary reference frame and operating under grid distorted voltage. The stationary reference frame model for the system is obtained in its fundamental frequency and then the model predictive technique is implemented, which predicts the system actions using the obtained system model without the need of any other harmonic consideration. The controller calculates the voltage vector of the inverter through the minimization of the cost function. Thus, the proposal demonstrates, through experiments, its positive results regarding the low impact of the distorted voltage in the grid current without using any harmonic consideration on the model. Experimental results and comparisons carried out endorse the proposal of this work.

Rapid population growth has led to significant demand for residential buildings around the world. Consequently, there is a growing energy demand associated with increased greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The residential building energy demand in arid countries such as Saudi Arabia is supplied with fossil fuel. The existing consumption pattern of fossil fuels in Saudi Arabia is less sustainable due to the depletion of fossil fuel resources and resulting environmental impacts. Buildings built in hot and arid climatic conditions demand high energy for creating habitable indoor environments. Enormous energy is required to maintain a cool temperature in hot regions. Moreover, climate change may have different impacts on hot climatic regions and affect building energy use differently. This means that different building interventions may be required to improve the performance of building energy performance in these geographical regions, thereby reducing the emissions of GHGs. In this study, th... [more]
