April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: natural ventilation, numerical simulation, orthogonal design, variance analysis, venturi effect
Natural ventilation is a way to reduce the energy consumption of building operations and improve the indoor living environment comfort. The venturi cap is designed with a roof, grille and wind deflector to intensify the natural ventilation of buildings. The structural parameters of the venturi cap were designed using an orthogonal design. Fluid analysis software was used for numerical simulation, and variance analysis was used to study the importance of seven influence factors: the width of the roof opening, the roof slope, the height of the wind deflector, the horizontal width of the wind deflector, the angle of the wind deflector, the angle of the grille, and the spacing of the grille slices. The results show that the most significant influencing factor is the width of the roof opening, while significant influence factors include the angle of the grille and the horizontal width of the wind deflector. Additionally, the optimum parameter combination for ventilation performance at the r... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: cohesion policy, common agricultural policy, European Union, good governance, just transition, rural areas, rural development, rural policy, sustainability transition, territorial justice
The sustainability transition of rural areas is a must due to rapid climate changes and biodiversity loss. Given the limited resources of rural communities, policy should facilitate a just sustainability transition of the EU rural areas. The analysis of EU development policies, past performance and the envisaged scope of reform, presented in this study point to a serious inconsistency between the declaration and implementation of relevant policies. Namely, the marginal role rural areas perform in common agricultural policy and cohesion policy; a result of the lack of a complex approach to rural development. The analysis was based on the concept of good governance and took a multi-level perspective. It advocates territorial justice as an approach that should be at the core of creating a comprehensive policy for rural areas in the EU, including their diversity and empowering local communities to choose the transition pathway that is most in line with their current situation and developme... Subject: Environment
Keywords: current, lessons learned, marine energy, marine hydrokinetic, permitting and licensing, tidal, wave
The marine renewable energy (MRE; renewable energy captured from waves, tides, ocean currents, the natural flow of water in rivers, and marine thermal gradients, without building new dams or diversions) industry has a vital role in the U.S. clean energy strategy as we progress to meet U.S. electricity and blue economy needs with renewable, domestic energy sources. However, a thorough assessment of the U.S. marine energy permitting process from the viewpoints of both developers that propose projects and regulators that permit them has not been performed. Sharing practical experiences in this new industry is vital to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the permitting process, identify data and information gaps, develop lessons learned, and advance the industry. This paper is a case study of qualitative findings, lessons learned, and recommendations from guided discussions, workshops, and webinars with both marine renewable energy developers and state and federal regulators that... Phase-Shifting Transformer Efficiency Analysis Based on Low-Voltage Laboratory Units
Paweł Albrechtowicz
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: efficiency, phase-shifting transformers, power losses, power systems, transmission lines
Phase-shifting transformers are effective elements used to control power flows in many power systems. Their positive influence on power flows has been proved in the literature. However, the efficiency of phase-shifting transformers has not been analyzed, especially not with regard for their various types. This study is therefore focused on the efficiency question with respect to electrical energy parameters. Research was performed on a laboratory phase-shifter unit with longitudinal and quadrature voltage regulation, and then these results were correlated to the simulation model equivalent. Laboratory transformer parameter data were used to prepare asymmetrical and symmetrical phase-shifting transformer simulation models. Simulation results were then used to compare the electrical properties and efficiency of all the types of phase-shifting transformer considered. All phase-shifting transformer types had a significant impact on the transmitted active power, but each type had different... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: 3D urban indicators, outdoor comfort, solar potential, sustainable development, urban form, urban growth
In coastal areas, the tourism sector contributes to the local economy, generating income, employment, investments and tax revenues but the rapid urban expansion creates great pressure on local resources and infrastructures, with negative repercussions on the residents’ quality of life, but also compromising the visitor’s experience. These areas face problems such as the formation of meteorological effects known as heat islands, due to the soil sealing, and increased energy demand in the peak season. To evaluate the impact of urban growth spatial pattern and change, three strategic sustainable challenges—urban form, urban energy, and urban outdoor comfort—were selected. The progress towards sustainability was measured and analyzed in a tourist city in the Algarve region, Portugal, for the period 2007−2018, using geographic information. A set of 2D and 3D indicators was derived for the building and block scales. Then, a change assessment based on cluster analysis was performed, and three... [more]

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: circular economy, productivity of energy sources, Slovakia, waste economy, waste treatment
Waste treatment consists of activities required to make sure that waste has the least practical impact on the environment. In Slovakia, more than 50% of waste is in storage. Waste development depends on the economic situation of the state. In Slovakia, there is economic intolerance of waste treatment due to the weaker economic situation of the inhabitants. The goal of this contribution is to study the development of waste production in Slovakia in regard to economic indexes of households with the aim of improving waste management. The goal is achieved by searching for a relation between economic indexes and households by a correlation matrix and by verification of polynomial dependence. According to the results of the statistical importance, we found similarity of the regions in chosen indexes by using of cluster analysis. By this method a sustainable economy and healthy environment is guaranteed and waste is used to produce energy.

Subject: Environment
Keywords: dielectric medium, fluoroketone, fluoronitrile, insulation, SF6, SF6-alternative, SF6-free, sulfur hexafluoride
For many years, SF6 has been the preferred dielectric medium in electrical power applications, particularly in high voltage gas-insulated equipment. However, with the recognition that SF6 has an extremely long atmospheric lifetime and very high global warming potential, governments have pursued emission reductions from gas-filled equipment. The electrical power industry has responded to this environmental challenge applying SF6-free technologies to an expanding range of applications which have traditionally used SF6, including gas-insulated switchgear, gas-insulated circuit breakers and gas-insulated lines or bus bars. Some of these SF6-free solutions include gas mixtures containing fluorinated compounds that have low climate impact, among them, a fluoronitrile and a fluoroketone developed as 3M™ Novec™ 4710 Insulating Gas and 3M™ Novec™ 5110 Insulating Gas, respectively. Both fluoronitrile and fluoroketone mixtures are successfully used in gas-insulated equipment currently operating o... [more]

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: damping estimation, droop converters, heterogeneous inertia, inertia estimation, mechanical inertia, power system monitoring, virtual inertia, virtual synchronous machines
The increasing and fast deployment of distributed generation is posing challenges to the operation and control of power systems due to the resulting reduction in the overall system rotational inertia and damping. Therefore, it becomes quite crucial for the transmission system operator to monitor the varying system inertia and damping in order to take proper actions to maintain the system stability. This paper presents an inertia estimation algorithm for low-inertia systems to estimate the inertia (both mechanical and virtual) and damping of systems with mixed generation resources and/or the resource itself. Moreover, the effect of high penetration of distributed energy resources and the resulting heterogeneous distribution of inertia on the overall system inertia estimation is investigated. A comprehensive set of case studies and scenarios of the IEEE 39-bus system provides results to demonstrate the performance of the proposed estimator.

Keywords: deep learning, Internet of things, mobile application, photovoltaic system, plant diseases classification, remote monitoring, smart greenhouse
To support farmers and improve the quality of crops production, designing of smart greenhouses is becoming indispensable. In this paper, a novel prototype for remote monitoring of a greenhouse is designed. The prototype allows creating an adequate artificial environment inside the greenhouse (e.g., water irrigation, ventilation, light intensity, and CO2 concentration). Thanks to the Internet of things technique, the parameters controlled (air temperature, relative humidity, capacitive soil moisture, light intensity, and CO2 concentration) were measured and uploaded to a designed webpage using appropriate sensors with a low-cost Wi-Fi module (NodeMCU V3). An Android mobile application was also developed using an A6 GSM module for notifying farmers (e.g., sending a warning message in case of any anomaly) regarding the state of the plants. A low-cost camera was used to collect and send images of the plants via the webpage for possible diseases identification and classification. In this co... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: experimental work, temperature fluctuation, thermal performance, thermal storage materials, trombe wall, ventilation system management
The Trombe wall is a passive solar system that can improve buildings energy efficiency. Despite the studies already developed in this field, more research is needed to assess the possibility of its integration in buildings avoiding user intervention. In this study, the influence of air vent management and materials’ heat storage capacity upon its thermal performance, particularly in the temperature fluctuation and indoor conditions, was discussed. Comparing two days with similar solar radiation (SR) for non-ventilated (NVTW) and ventilated (VTW) Trombe walls, a differential of 43 °C between the external surface temperature and the one in the middle of the massive wall was verified for NVTW, while for VTW this value was 27 °C, reflecting the heat transfer by air convection, which reduced greenhouse effect, solar absorption and heat storage. A cooling capacity greater than 50% was verified for VTW compared to NVTW during night periods. An algorithm for the Trombe wall’s automation and co... [more]

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Fault Detection, Hilbert–Huang Transform (HHT), instantaneous phase difference of current high-frequency component (IPDCHC), microgrid, self-adaptive threshold
Fault detection in microgrids is of great significance for power systems’ safety and stability. Due to the high penetration of distributed generations, fault characteristics become different from those of traditional fault detection. Thus, we propose a new fault detection and classification method for microgrids. Only current information is needed for the method. Hilbert−Huang Transform and sliding window strategy are used in fault characteristic extraction. The instantaneous phase difference of current high-frequency component is obtained as the fault characteristic. A self-adaptive threshold is set to increase the detection sensitivity. A fault can be detected by comparing the fault characteristic and the threshold. Furthermore, the fault type is identified by the utilization of zero-sequence current. Simulations for both section and system have been completed. The instantaneous phase difference of the current high-frequency component is an effective fault characteristic for detectin... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: high water head, micro-indentation, micromechanics, sulfate attack
Large-scale water infrastructure such as immersed tunnels remain in a seawater environment for a long time, and gradually deteriorate under the action of high water head, soil pressure and corrosive ions in seawater solution. In order to simulate the corrosion damage and deterioration of concrete in seawater environment, 10% Na2SO4 solution was used to conduct indoor corrosion tests on concrete samples under different water heads and for different durations. The corrosion damage and micro-mechanical properties of concrete under the coupled action of high water head and sulfate are studied by micro-indentation tests. The effect of sulfate ion corrosion and complex mechanical loading was studied. The effect of micro-mechanical properties of concrete is studied on time and space. Numerical simulation and test results show that the results of micro-indentation are in good agreement with the fitting curves. The chemical damage rate and the corrosion depth increase with the increase of water... [more]

Keywords: channel, conical dimple, heat, Simulation, vortex
The testing of the standard and modified SST models of the transfer of shear stresses was carried out on an example of calculating the heat transfer with an intense detached flow around a conical dimple with a slope angle of 45° on the heated wall of a narrow channel. It was shown that the standard turbulence model by Menter SST (MSST) of 2003, widely used in the packages Fluent, CFX, StarCCM+, etc., significantly underestimated the intensity of the return flow. A correction of this model was presented that took into account the influence of the curvature of streamlines within the framework of the Rodi-Leshziner-Isaev (RLI) approach for spatial separated flows. It was found that the predictions for the RLI MSST 2003 were close to the predictions for the original standard MSST 1993, in which the eddy viscosity was calculated using the vorticity modulus. At the same time, the predictions based on the modified one, following Smirnov-Menter (SM) MSST 2003, included in the ANSYS model catal... [more]

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: charging demand, charging strategy, electric vehicles, Monte-Carlo simulation, power development plan
Electric Vehicle (EV) technology is one of the most promising solutions to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the transportation sector. However, a large increase of EVs raises concerns about negative impacts on electricity generation, transmission, and distribution systems. This study analyzes the benefits and trade-offs for EV penetration in Thai road transport based on EV penetration scenarios from 2019 to 2036. Two charging strategies are considered to assess the impact of EV charging: free charging and off-peak charging. Uncertainty variables are considered by a stochastic approach based on Monte-Carlo simulation (MCS). The simulation results shown that the adoption of EVs can reduce both energy consumption and GHG emissions. The results also indicate that the increased load due to EV charging demand in all scenarios is still within the buffer level, compared to the installed generation capacity in the Power Development Plan 2018 revision 1 (PD... Keywords: continuity of power supply, on-board auxiliary devices, power interruptions, trolleybus power supply system
When a trolleybus travels through insulated sections of the overhead contact line, it experiences momentary power interruptions, which adversely affect the vehicle’s on-board auxiliary subassemblies. To reduce these negative effects, one can harness energy recovered via regenerative braking. A model power supply circuit diagram for structural systems of the trolleybus is proposed. Simulation tests were carried out to develop a method for analyzing power supply to trolleybus auxiliary devices and verify it in a real-life example. The results allow determination of the limit power that can be generated by the trolleybus drive system to feed auxiliary devices during interruptions in power supply from the overhead contact line. The possibility of powering the on-board auxiliary equipment of a trolleybus using energy from recuperation with a traction motor is presented.

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cycle-to-cycle variations, dual fuel combustion, pilot injection, research engine, spray propagation, turbulent flames
Dual fuel combustion depicts a possible alternative to reduce emissions from large engines and is characterized by injecting a small amount of diesel fuel into a lean natural gas−air mixture. Thereby, the presence of autoignition, diffusive and premixed combustion determine the high complexity of this process. In this work, an Extended Coherent Flame Model was adapted to consider the effect of natural gas on the ignition delay time. This model was afterward utilized to simulate 25 consecutive engine cycles employing LES. In this framework, the ensemble-average flow field was compared to a RANS solution to assess the advantages of LES in terms of the prediction of the in-cylinder flow field. A detailed investigation of the heat release characteristic showed that natural gas already highly contributes to the heat release at the beginning of combustion. Furthermore, a methodology to investigate the turbulent combustion regimes was utilized. It could be ascertained that the combustion main... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Biofuels, Biomass, circular economy, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solid biofuels, waste to energy
One of the anaerobic digestion process products in an agricultural biogas plant is digestate (digested pulp). Large quantities of digestate generated in the process of biogas production all over the world require proper management. Fertilization is the main management of this substrate, so it is essential to look for new alternatives. The work aims to determine and discuss the possibilities of using digestate solid fraction (DSF) for pellets as biofuel production. Pellets from DSF alone and pellets with sawdust, grain straw additives were analyzed. The lower heating value (LHV) based on the dry matter for all analyzed pellets ranged from 19,164 kJ∙kg−1 to 19,879 kJ∙kg−1. The ash content was similar for all four samples and ranged from 3.62% to 5.23%. This value is relatively high, which is related to the degree of fermentation in the anaerobic digestion process. The results showed that the DSF substrate after the anaerobic digestion process still has energy potential. Analyzing those r... [more]

Keywords: chemical reaction, local thermal non-equilibrium, Oldroyd-B and Jeffrey fluids, porous medium
In the current paper, we endeavour to execute a numerical analysis in connection with the boundary layer flow induced in a non-Newtonian liquid by a stretching sheet with heat and mass transfer. The effects of chemical reactions and local thermal non-equilibrium (LTNE) conditions are considered in the modelling. The LTNE model is based on energy equations, and provides unique heat transfer for both liquid phases. As a result, different temperature profiles for both the fluid and solid phases are used in this work. The model equation system is reduced by means of appropriate similarity transformations, which are then numerically solved by employing the classical Runge−Kutta (RK) scheme along with the shooting method. The resultant findings are graphed to show the effects of various physical factors on the involved distributions. Outcomes reveal that Jeffrey fluid shows improved velocity for lower values of porosity when compared to Oldroyd-B fluid. However, for higher values of porosity... [more]

Keywords: chemical and petrophysical characterisation, CO2 geological storage, CO2–brine-cement–reservoir rock interaction, permeability, wellbore integrity
Geological storage of CO2 in saline aquifers and depleted oil and gas reservoirs can help mitigate CO2 emissions. However, CO2 leakage over a long storage period represents a potential concern. Therefore, it is critical to establish a good understanding of the interactions between CO2−brine and cement−caprock/reservoir rock to ascertain the potential for CO2 leakage. Accordingly, in this work, we prepared a unique set of composite samples to resemble the cement−reservoir rock interface. A series of experiments simulating deep wellbore environments were performed to investigate changes in chemical, physical, mechanical, and petrophysical properties of the composite samples. Here, we present the characterisation of composite core samples, including porosity, permeability, and mechanical properties, determined before and after long-term exposure to CO2-rich brine. Some of the composite samples were further analysed by X-ray microcomputed tomography (X-ray µ-CT), X-ray diffraction (XRD), a... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: deagrarianisation, LAU, rural development, rural policy, socio-economic heterogeneity, typology
The paper aims to identify the significant heterogeneity of socio-economic rural development in Poland by identifying different types of rural areas and clarifying the existing diversity. This objective requires the following: (1) defining the rural development in Polish conditions, (2) abandoning the urban−rural continuum concept, and (3) conducting an analysis involving data aggregated from the local administrative units (2173 gminas/communes). The approach is exploratory and is limited to two questions elaborating the main problem related to the scale and character of rural variety: What socio-economic types of rural area are found in Poland? How are they distributed spatially? The statistical procedure is based on Diday’s dynamic clouds typological analysis. This yielded seven types of rural areas that exhaust their diversity. The main indicator of the character of the different types is related to the level of deagrarianisation of the local economy. The authors argue that the a pr... [more]

This paper develops new practical rule-based energy management systems (EMSs) for typical grid-connected houses with solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery by considering different rates for purchasing and selling electricity. The EMSs are developed to supply the household’s loads and reduce operating costs of the system based on different options of flat and time-of-use (ToU) rates for buying and selling electricity prices. Four different options are evaluated and compared in this study: (1) Flat-Flat, (2) ToU-Flat, (3) Flat-ToU, and (4) ToU-ToU. The operation cost is calculated based on the electricity exchange with the main grid, the equivalent cost of PV generation, as well as the degradation cost of battery storage. The operation of the grid-connected house with rooftop solar PV and battery is evaluated for a sunny week in summer and a cloudy week in winter to investigate the proper performance for high and low generations of PV. While the developed rule-based EMS are generic and can... [more]
