1,2—Propanediol Production from Glycerol Derived from Biodiesel’s Production: Technical and Economic Study
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 1,2 propanediol, biodiesel, Colombia case-study, glycerol as a byproduct, trickle-bed reactor
For every nine tons of produced biodiesel, there is another ton of glycerol as a byproduct. Therefore, glycerol prices dropped significantly worldwide in recent years; the more significant biodiesel production is, the more glycerol exists as a byproduct. glycerol prices also impact the biodiesel manufacturing business, as it could be sold according to its refinement grade. The primary objective of this work was to evaluate the economic potential of the production of 1,2-propanediol derived from the biodiesel produced in Colombia. A plant to produce 1,2-propanediol via catalytic hydrogenation of glycerol in a trickle-bed reactor was designed. The plant comprised a reaction scheme where non-converted excess hydrogen was recycled, and the heat generated in the reactor was recovered. The reactor effluent was sent to a separation train where 98% m/m purity 1,2-propanediol was attained. Capital and operational costs were estimated from the process simulation. The net present value (NPV) and... [more]

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: CO2 capture efficiency, CO2 EOR and storage, economic evaluation, energy consumption, process optimization
CO2 capture and reinjection process (CCRP) can reduce the used CO2 amount and improve the CO2 storage efficiency in CO2 EOR projects. To select the best CCRP is an important aspect. Based on the involved equipment units of the CCRP, a novel techno-economic model of CCRP for produced gas in CO2 EOR and storage project was established. Five kinds of CO2 capture processes are covered, including the chemical absorption using amine solution (MDEA), pressure swing adsorption (PSA), low-temperature fractionation (LTF), membrane separation (MS), and direct reinjection mixed with purchased CO2 (DRM). The evaluation indicators of CCRP such as the cost, energy consumption, and CO2 capture efficiency and purity can be calculated. Taking the pilot project of CO2 EOR and storage in XinJiang oilfield China as an example, a sensitivity evaluation of CCRP was conducted based on the assumed gas production scale and the predicted yearly gas production. Finally, the DRM process was selected as the main CC... [more]

Split Cantilever Multi-Resonant Piezoelectric Energy Harvester for Low-Frequency Application
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: finite element method, low frequency, multi-resonant, piezoelectric energy harvesting
This paper presents a new way to design a broadband harvester for harvesting high energy over a low-frequency range of 10−15 Hz. The design comprises a cantilever beam with two parallel grooves to form three dissimilar length parallel branches, each with an unequal concentrated tip mass. The piezoelectric material covers the whole length on both sides of the beam to form a bimorph. Appropriate geometry and mass magnitudes are obtained by a parametric study using the Finite Element Method. The design was simulated in COMSOL Multiphysics to study its response. The first three bending modes were utilized in energy harvesting, resulting in three power peaks at their respective fundamental frequencies. The adequate load resistance determined was 5.62 kΩ, at which maximum power can be harvested. The proposed harvester was compared to two other harvesters presented in the literature for validation: First, an optimized conventional harvester while the proposed harvester is operating at adequat... April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Geothermal Heat Pump System (GHPS), Grey Prediction Model GM (1,1), Improved Grey Prediction Model IGM (1,1)
This paper presents the Improved Grey Prediction Model, also called IGM (1,1) model, to increase the prediction accuracy of the Grey Prediction Model (GM) model that performs the GHPS output temperature prediction. This was based on correcting the current predicted value by subtracting the error between the previous predicted value and the previous immediate mean of the measured value. Subsequently, the IGM (1,1) model was applied to predict the output temperature of the GHPSs at Oklahoma University, the University Politècnica de València, and Oakland University, respectively. For each GHPS, the model uses a small dataset of 24 data points (i.e., 24 h) for training to predict the output temperature eight hours in advance. The proposed model was verified using three different output temperature datasets; these datasets were also used to validate the power efficiency of the proposed model. In addition, the empirical results show that the proposed IGM (1,1) model significantly improves th... [more]

Towards a Global Energy-Sustainable Economy Nexus; Summing up Evidence from Recent Empirical Work
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: critical review, energy-growth nexus, new economics, sustainable economy
The recent trend in New Economics is the establishment of measures of sustainable wealth and welfare which take into account all the parameters of economic, environmental, and social life and progress, juxtaposed to the conventional and myopic GDP. This review summarizes results from a series of recent papers in the energy-growth nexus field, which have perused a proxy for the sustainable GDP instead of the conventional GDP and discusses the difference in results and policy implications. The energy-growth nexus field itself has generated a bulk of work since the seminal study of Kraft and Kraft (1978), but still the field needs new perspectives in order to generate results with a consensus. The bidirectional causality between energy consumption and sustainable economy provides evidence for the Feedback Hypothesis, a statement that essentially warns that it is too early for sustainability to be feasible without fossil energy consumption, and vice versa. Estimation of Functional Form of Time-Dependent Heat Transfer Coefficient Using an Accurate and Robust Parameter Estimation Approach: An Inverse Analysis
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: body-fitted grid generation, function estimation, inverse heat transfer, parameter estimation, sensitivity analysis, steepest-descent method, time-dependent heat transfer coefficient
This paper presents a numerical method to address function estimation problems in inverse heat transfer problems using parameter estimation approach without prior information on the functional form of the variable to be estimated. Using an inverse analysis, the functional form of a time-dependent heat transfer coefficient is estimated efficiently and accurately. The functional form of the heat transfer coefficient is assumed unknown and the inverse heat transfer problem should be treated using a function estimation approach by solving sensitivity and adjoint problems during the minimization process. Based on proposing a new sensitivity matrix, however, the functional form can be estimated in an accurate and very efficient manner using a parameter estimation approach without the need for solving the sensitivity and adjoint problems and imposing extra computational cost, mathematical complexity, and implementation efforts. Low-RPM Torque Converter (LRTC)
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: resonance frequency, torque converter, wave energy conversion
The concept concerned in this paper is based on energy conversion of the ocean waves via rotational generators. The objective of this research is to develop a new type of slow-motion converter. The LRTC device consists of a drum that is connected via wire to a floating buoy. The drum is connected to rotary generators. The generators are heavily braked when the direction of movement changes (up/down); this is because the generators have been charged the maximum load in order to obtain maximum output power. For upcoming improvement, the generators should have some power storage as flywheel. In the future experiments, the torque converter can even be tuned to rotate in resonance with the incoming waves, strongly increasing power absorption. Constant force springs are applied for this purpose. The focus of this project is, therefore, a new generation of wave power device for utility-scale energy conversion offering a cost of energy that can compete with established energy resources.

Transition to Periodic Behaviour of Flow Past a Circular Cylinder under the Action of Fluidic Actuation in the Transitional Regime
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: dynamical systems, period doubling bifurcation, transitional flow
This study focuses on the numerical investigation of the underlying mechanism of transition from chaotic to periodic dynamics of circular cylinder wake under the action of time-dependent fluidic actuation at the Reynolds number = 2000. The forcing is realized by blowing and suction from the slits located at ±90∘ on the top and bottom surfaces of the cylinder. The inverse period-doubling cascade is the underlying physical mechanism underpinning the wake transition from mild chaos to perfectly periodic dynamics in the spanwise-independent, time-dependent forcing at twice the natural vortex-shedding frequency.

A Review of Low-CO2 Emission Fuels for a Dual-Fuel RCCI Engine
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alternative fuels for IC engines, biofuels blending, combustion control, dual-fuel engine, emission characteristics, HCNG fuel, HVO fuel, hydrogen enriched fuels, RCCI engine
This article discusses the problems of exhaust gas emissions in the context of the possibility of their reduction through the use of fuels with hydrogen as an additive or hydrotreatment. These fuels, thanks to their properties, may be a suitable response to more and more demanding restrictions on exhaust emissions. The use of such fuels in reactivity controlled dual fuel engines (RCCI) is currently the most effective way of using them in internal combustion (IC) engines. Low-temperature combustion in this type of engine allows the use of all modern fuels intended for combustion engines with high thermal efficiency. Thermal efficiency higher than in classic engines allows for additional reduction of CO2 emissions. In this work, the research on this subject was compiled, and conclusions were drawn as to further possibilities of popularizing the use of these fuels in a wide spectrum of applications and the prospect of using them on a mass scale.

Biocellulose for Treatment of Wastewaters Generated by Energy Consuming Industries: A Review
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: biotechnology, fashion industry effluents, nanocellulose, oily effluents, oleophobic filter
Water and energy are two of the most important resources used by humanity. Discharging highly polluting wastewater without prior treatment is known to adversely affect water potability, agriculture, aquatic life and even society. One of the greatest threats to water sources are contaminated effluents, which can be of residential or industrial origin and whose disposal in nature must comply with specific laws aimed at reducing their environmental impact. As the oil industry is closely related to energy consumption, it is among the sectors most responsible for global pollution. The damage caused by this industrial sector is present in all countries, whose legislations require companies to carry out wastewater treatment before disposal or recycling in their production process. Bacterial cellulose membranes have been shown to be efficient as filters for the removal of various contaminants, including biological and chemical agents or heavy metals. Therefore, their use could make an importan... [more]

Experimental and Numerical Analysis on Two-Phase Induced Low-Speed Pre-Ignition
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: endoscopic in-cylinder high-speed recordings, irregular combustion, light-induced fluorescence, low-speed pre-ignition, particle-induced ignition
The root cause of the initial low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) is not yet clarified. The literature data suggest that a two-phase phenomenon is most likely triggering the unpredictable premature ignitions in highly boosted spark-ignition engines. However, there are different hypotheses regarding the actual initiator, whether it is a detached liquid oil-fuel droplet or a solid-like particle from deposits. Therefore, the present work investigates the possibility of oil droplet-induced pre-ignitions using a modern downsized engine with minimally invasive endoscopic optical accessibility incorporating in-cylinder lubrication oil detection via light-induced fluorescence. This setup enables the differentiation between liquid and solid particles. Furthermore, the potential of hot solid particles to initiate an ignition under engine-relevant conditions is analyzed numerically. To do so, the particle is generalized as a hot surface transferring heat to the reactive ambient gas phase. The gas-phase... [more]

Influence of Oxygen Ion Migration from Substrates on Photochemical Degradation of CH3NH3PbI3 Hybrid Perovskite
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: hybrid perovskites, light-induced degradation, oxygen ions, substrates, XPS
Measurements of XPS survey, core levels (N 1s, O 1s, Pb 4f, I 3d), and valence band (VB) spectra of CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3) hybrid perovskite prepared on different substrates (glass, indium tin oxide (ITO), and TiO2) aged under different light-soaking conditions at room temperature are presented. The results reveal that the photochemical stability of MAPbI3 depends on the type of substrate and gradually decreases when glass is replaced by ITO and TiO2. Also, the degradation upon exposure to visible light is accompanied by the formation of MAI, PbI2, and Pb0 products as shown by XPS core levels spectra. According to XPS O 1s and VB spectra measurements, this degradation process is superimposed on the partial oxidation of lead atoms in ITO/MAPbI3 and TiO2/MAPbI3, for which Pb−O bonds are formed due to the diffusion of the oxygen ions from the substrates. This unexpected interaction leads to additional photochemical degradation.

Understanding and optimizing the relation between nuclear reactor components or physical phenomena allows us to improve the economics and safety of nuclear reactors, deliver new nuclear reactor designs, and educate nuclear staff. Such relation in the case of the reactor core is described by coupled reactor physics as heat transfer depends on energy production while energy production depends on heat transfer with almost none of the available codes providing full coupled reactor physics at the fuel pin level. A Multiscale and Multiphysics nuclear software development between NURESIM and CASL for LWRs has been proposed for the UK. Improved coupled reactor physics at the fuel pin level can be simulated through coupling nodal codes such as DYN3D as well as subchannel codes such as CTF. Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: distribution systems, gas networks, Hydrogen, power-to-gas, renewable gases, statistical analyses, synthetic network models
The deployment of low-carbon hydrogen in gas grids comes with strategic benefits in terms of energy system integration and decarbonization. However, hydrogen thermophysical properties substantially differ from natural gas and pose concerns of technical and regulatory nature. The present study investigates the blending of hydrogen into distribution gas networks, focusing on the steady-state fluid dynamic response of the grids and gas quality compliance issues at increasing hydrogen admixture levels. Two blending strategies are analyzed, the first of which involves the supply of NG−H2 blends at the city gate, while the latter addresses the injection of pure hydrogen in internal grid locations. In contrast with traditional case-specific analyses, results are derived from simulations executed over a large number (i.e., one thousand) of synthetic models of gas networks. The responses of the grids are therefore analyzed in a statistical fashion. The results highlight that lower probabilities... [more]

A Modified Grid-Connected Inverter Topology for Power Oscillation Suppression under Unbalanced Grid Voltage Faults
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: modified gird-connected inverter topology, negative-sequence component, power oscillation, unbalanced grid voltage fault
Under unbalanced grid voltage faults, the output power oscillation of a grid-connected inverter is an urgent problem to be solved. In the traditional topology of inverters, it is impossible to eliminate power oscillation and simultaneously maintain balanced output current waveform. In this paper, considering the solvability of reference current matrix equation, the inherent mechanism of inverter output power oscillation is analyzed, and a modified topology with auxiliary modules inserted in series between the inverter output filter and the point of common coupling (PCC) is proposed. Due to the extra controllable freedoms provided by auxiliary modules, the inverter could generate extra voltage to correct PCC voltage while keeping balance of output current, so as to eliminate the oscillation of output power. Simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed topology.

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: demand response, Diesel, photovoltaic system, renewable, storage, wind turbine
The article proposes a method of multipurpose optimization of the size of an autonomous hybrid energy system consisting of photovoltaic, wind, diesel, and battery energy storage systems, and including a load-shifting system. The classical iterative Gauss−Seidel method was applied to optimize the size of a hybrid energy system in a remote settlement on Sakhalin Island. As a result of the optimization according to the minimum net present value criterion, several optimal configurations corresponding to different component combinations were obtained. Several optimal configurations were also found, subject to a payback period constraint of 5, 6, and 7 years. Optimizing the size of the hybrid power system with electric load shifting showed that the share of the load not covered by renewable energy sources decreases by 1.25% and 2.1%, depending on the parameters of the load shifting model. Net present cost and payback period also decreased, other technical and economic indicators improved; ho... [more]

Electric Arc Furnaces as a Cause of Current and Voltage Asymmetry
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: arc furnace, current and voltage asymmetry, power quality, voltage fluctuations
In the case of three-phase arc furnaces, two types of asymmetry can be distinguished: constructional and operational. The structural asymmetry is related to the construction of high-current circuits supplying the arc furnace. The knowledge of the parameters of the high-current circuit allows to determine the operating characteristics of the arc device. The author proposed a method for calculating the real values of the resistance and reactance of the high-current circuit. For this purpose, tests were made to short-circuit the electrodes with the charge. During the short-circuit, with the use of a power quality analyzer, measurements of electrical indicators were carried out, which allow to determine the parameters of the high-current circuit. A new method for determining voltage operational unbalance is also presented in this paper. The theoretical considerations presented in the article were verified in industrial conditions.

Assessing Potential Thermo-Mechanical Impacts on Caprock Due to CO2 Injection—A Case Study from Northern Lights CCS
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: caprock, CCS, geomechanics, thermal effects
Due to significant temperature differences between the injected medium and in situ formation, injection of CO2 (as with water or other cold fluids) at depth induces thermal changes that must be accounted for a complete understanding of the mechanical integrity of the injection/storage system. Based on evaluations for the Northern Lights Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project, we focus on thermal effects induced on the caprock via conduction from cooling in the storage sands below. We investigate, using both analytical and numerical approaches, how undrained effects within the low permeability caprock can lead to volumetric contraction differences between the rock framework and the pore fluid which induce both stress and pore pressure changes that must be properly quantified. We show that such undrained effects, while inducing a more complicated response in the stress changes in the caprock, do not necessarily lead to unfavourable tensile conditions, and may, in fact, lead to increase...
