March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: APG, gas injection, methane, MMP, physical and numerical modeling, slim tube
Gas injection is one of the prospective methods in the development of unconventional oil reserves. Before implementation in the field, it is necessary to justify the effectiveness of using gas agents in specific object conditions. Experiments of oil displacement on physical models with subsequent numerical modeling can provide the information necessary to justify the feasibility of using gas injection in specific reservoir conditions. This work is devoted to a series of experiments determining the minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) on a slim tube model and the analysis of oil displacement dynamics for various gas compositions, as well as numerical modeling. Displacement experiments were carried out using a recombined oil sample from one of the fields in Western Siberia. The MMP was determined by the classical method of inflection point on the displacement efficiency versus injection pressure curve, which was 34.6 MPa for associated petroleum gas (APG) and 49.9 MPa for methane. The dysn... [more]
Higher Wind: Highlighted Expansion Opportunities to Repower Wind Energy
Francisco Haces-Fernandez
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: partial repowering, total repowering, wind energy, wind energy potential, wind energy projects, wind energy resources, wind market maturity assessment, wind speed
Decarbonizing the world economy, before the most damaging effects of climate change become irreversible, requires substantially increasing renewable energy generation in the near future. However, this may be challenging in mature wind energy markets, where many advantageous wind locations are already engaged by older wind farms, potentially generating suboptimal wind harvesting. This research developed a novel method to systematically analyze diverse factors to determine the level of maturity of wind markets and evaluate the adequacy of wind farm repowering at regional and individual levels. The approach was applied to wind markets in the United States (U.S.), in which several states were identified as having diverse levels of maturity. Results obtained from case studies in Texas indicated a consequential number of wind farms that have reached their twenty-year end-of-life term and earlier obsolescence levels. The proposed approach aided in determining wind farms that may benefit from... [more]

Keywords: hydraulic flow units, Machine Learning, Nam Con Son Basin, permeability
The test study area is the Miocene reservoir of Nam Con Son Basin, offshore Vietnam. In the study we used unsupervised learning to automatically cluster hydraulic flow units (HU) based on flow zone indicators (FZI) in a core plug dataset. Then we applied supervised learning to predict HU by combining core and well log data. We tested several machine learning algorithms. In the first phase, we derived hydraulic flow unit clustering of porosity and permeability of core data using unsupervised machine learning methods such as Ward’s, K mean, Self-Organize Map (SOM) and Fuzzy C mean (FCM). Then we applied supervised machine learning methods including Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Support Vector Machines (SVM), Boosted Tree (BT) and Random Forest (RF). We combined both core and log data to predict HU logs for the full well section of the wells without core data. We used four wells with six logs (GR, DT, NPHI, LLD, LSS and RHOB) and 578 cores from the Miocene reservoir to train, validate... [more]

Keywords: ground deformation, ground fissures, ground subsidence, N00 method, windy sandy area
An observatory was established at the Ningtiaota Mine (China) in order to investigate the surface deformation pattern of N00 method workings mining in shallow buried thick coal seams in a windy-sand area. The observatory allows one to measure the coupling between the periodic changes of parameters related to ground subsidence and ground cracks with workings advancement. The data monitored in the field indicate that when the adjacent mining workings are mined below the ground, a sinkhole basin with a larger impact area will be formed. New ground fractures are formed above the mining area to connect with the fractures above the mining face. As a consequence a new pattern of “O” circle distribution beyond the working face is formed, which develops rapidly during the working face recovery. In addition, the dynamic fractures in coal mining are characterized by the phenomenon of self-healing. Our findings will help to protect the surface environment of the mine area during shallow buried hig... [more]

The aim of this study was to determine the role of an installation based on biodrying of municipal waste in a Circular Economy by taking into account the quantitative and qualitative changes in its selectively collected waste stream. As a case study, the Mechanical-Biological municipal waste treatment installation in Olsztyn, Poland, was selected, which is equipped with a separate section for valorizing the selectively collected waste stream. The scope of the work included a complete mass balance of the waste treatment plant, an assessment of the technological efficiency of the municipal waste biodrying installation, and determination of the changes in the main waste from 2016 to 2020. This paper proposes an empirical method for estimating process loss during biodrying and provides many technological results. The average process loss was 23.47%, and on average, 88.9% of the waste produced by biodrying consisted of the Refuse-Derived Fuel fraction. The recovery of commercial assortments... [more]
Grid-Following Mode Operation of Small-Scale Distributed Battery Energy Storages for Fast Frequency Regulation in a Mixed-Source Microgrid
Amir Hussain, Wajiha Shireen
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery energy storage, droop and VSG control, frequency control, islanded microgrid, model-based control
As the share of power converter-based renewable energy sources (RESs) is high, a microgrid, in islanded mode, is more vulnerable to frequency instability due to (1) sudden power imbalance and (2) low inertia. One of the most common approaches to address this issue is to provide virtual inertia to the system by appropriately controlling the grid-side converter of the RESs. However, the primary frequency controller (PFC) presented in this paper focuses on the fast compensation of power imbalance without adding inertia to the system. The proposed method is based on estimating the real-time power imbalance caused by a disturbance and compensating it using multiple small-scale distributed battery energy storage systems (BESSs). The power imbalance is estimated by observing the initial rate of change of frequency (RoCoF) following a disturbance. Based on the estimated power imbalance and the rating of the BESSs, the reference power for the BESSs is determined. The BESSs are controlled in gri... [more]
A Rapid Compression Machine Study of 2-Phenylethanol Autoignition at Low-To-Intermediate Temperatures

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 2-phenylethanol, autoignition, low temperature chemistry, rapid compression machine
To meet the increasing anti-knocking quality demand of boosted spark-ignition engines, fuel additives are considered an effective approach to tailor fuel properties for satisfying the performance requirements. Thus, screening/developing bio-derived fuel additives that are best-suited for advanced spark-ignition engines has become a significant task. 2-Phenylethanol (2-PE) is an attractive candidate that features high research octane number, high octane sensitivity, low vapor pressure, and high energy density. Recognizing that the low temperature autoignition chemistry of 2-PE is not well understood and the need for fundamental experimental data at engine-relevant conditions, rapid compression machine (RCM) experiments are therefore conducted herein to measure ignition delay times (IDTs) of 2-PE in air over a wide range of conditions to fill this fundamental void. These newly acquired IDT data at low-to-intermediated temperatures, equivalence ratios of 0.35−1.5, and compressed pressures... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: digitization, smart water, success factors, Sustainability
Water is increasingly taking center stage when it comes to coping with climate change. Especially in urban areas, negative consequences from heavy rainfall events and prolonged dry periods are rising worldwide. In the past, the various tasks of urban water management were performed by different departments that often did not cooperate with each other (water supply, wastewater disposal, green space irrigation, etc.), as the required water supply was not a question of available water volumes. This is already changing with climate change, in some cases even dramatically. More and more, it is necessary to consider how to distribute available water resources in urban areas, especially during dry periods, since wastewater treatment is also becoming more complex and costly. In the future, urban water management will examine water use in terms of its various objectives, and will need to provide alternative water resources for these different purposes (groundwater, river water, storm water, tre... Keywords: Energy, ensemble model, long short-term memory, LSTM, water flow forecasting
Water flow forecasts are an essential information for energy production, management and hydropower control. Advanced actions to optimize electricity production can be taken based on predicted information. This work proposes an ensemble strategy using recurrent neural networks to generate a forecast of water flow at Jirau Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP), installed on the Madeira River in Brazil. The ensemble strategy consists of combining three long short-term memory (LSTM) networks that model the Madeira River and two of its tributaries: Mamoré and Abunã rivers. The historical data from streamflow of the Madeira river and its tributaries are used to validate the ensemble LSTM model, where each time series of river tributaries are modeled separated by LSTM models and the result used as input for another LSTM model in order to forecast the streamflow of the main river. The experimental results present low errors for training and test sets for individual LSTM networks and ensemble model.... [more]

Keywords: economic efficiency, Energy Efficiency, low emissions, social and economic aspects of energy, Visegrad Group, zero emissions
Transport is one of the key sectors of the European economy. However, the intensive development of transport caused negative effects in the form of an increase in the emission of harmful substances. The particularly dramatic situation took place in the V4 countries. This made it necessary to implement solutions reducing emissions in transport, including passenger transport. Such activities can be implemented in the field of implementation of low-emission and zero-emission vehicles for use. That is why the European Union and the governments of the Visegrad Group countries have developed numerous recommendations, communications, laws, and strategies that order carriers to implement low- and zero-emission mobility. Therefore, transport organizers and communication operators faced the choice of the type of buses. From an economic point of view, each entrepreneur is guided by the economic efficiency of the vehicles used. Hence, the main aim of the article was to conduct an economic evaluati... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, ejector, plate heat exchanger, pressure drop, refrigeration system
Ejector refrigeration systems are rapidly evolving and are poised to become one of the most preferred cooling systems in the near future. CO2 transcritical refrigeration systems have inherently high working pressures and discharge temperatures, providing a large volumetric heating capacity. In the current research, the heat ejected from the CO2 gas cooler was proposed as a driving heating source for the compression ejector system, representing the energy supply for the generator in a combined cycle. The local design approach was investigated for the combined plate-type heat exchanger (PHE) via Matlab code integrated with the NIST real gas database. HFO refrigerants (1234ze(E) and 1234yf) were selected to serve as the cold fluid on the generator flowing through three different phases: subcooled liquid, a two-phase mixture, and superheated vapour. The study examines the following: the effectiveness, the heat transfer coefficients, and the pressure drop of the PHE working fluids under var... [more]
Flight Stability of Rigid Wing Airborne Wind Energy Systems
Filippo Trevisi, Alessandro Croce, Carlo E. D. Riboldi
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AWES, dynamic stability, eigenvalue analysis, flight dynamics, modeling for control, tethered flight
The flight mechanics of rigid wing Airborne Wind Energy Systems (AWESs) is fundamentally different from the one of conventional aircrafts. The presence of the tether largely impacts the system dynamics, making the flying craft to experience forces which can be an order of magnitude larger than those experienced by conventional aircrafts. Moreover, an AWES needs to deal with a sustained yet unpredictable wind, and the ensuing requirements for flight maneuvers in order to achieve prescribed control and power production goals. A way to maximize energy capture while facing disturbances without requiring an excessive contribution from active control is that of suitably designing the AWES craft to feature good flight dynamics characteristics. In this study, a baseline circular flight path is considered, and a steady state condition is defined by modeling all fluctuating dynamic terms over the flight loop as disturbances. In-flight stability is studied by linearizing the equations of motion o... [more]

Keywords: carbon emission, economic growth, energy consumption, environment, GHG emissions, nuclear energy
In this paper we examined the interaction between greenhouse gas emissions, nuclear energy, coal energy, urban agglomeration, and economic growth in Pakistan by utilizing time series data during 1972−2019. The stationarity of the variables was tested through unit root tests, while the ARDL (autoregressive distributed lag) method with long and short-run estimations was applied to reveal the linkages between variables. A unidirectional association between all variables was revealed by performing a Granger causality test under the vector error correction model (VECM) that was extracted during the short-run estimate. Furthermore, the stepwise least squares technique was also utilized to check the robustness of the variables. The findings of long-run estimations showed that GHG emissions, coal energy, and urban agglomeration have an adversative association with economic growth in Pakistan, while nuclear energy showed a dynamic association with the economic growth. The outcomes of short-run... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: feature separation, MAP, mechanical composite fault, VMD
With the development of modern industry and scientific technology, production equipment plays an increasingly important role in military and industrial production, and the fault detection signal of gears and bearings state in transmission equipment becomes very important. Therefore, this paper proposes a gear-bearing composite fault signal decomposition and reconstruction method, which combines the marine predator algorithm (MPA) and variational mode decomposition (VMD) technologies. For the parameters’ selection of VMD, the optimization algorithm allows us to quickly and accurately obtain the results with the best kurtosis correlation index after signal decomposition and reconstruction. The experiments demonstrate the excellent performance of our method in the field of separation and denoising mixed gear-bearing fault signals.

Keywords: 2D materials, detection, Energy, nanomaterials, nanoparticle, scintillators
Recently, nanomaterial-based scintillators are newly emerging technologies for many research fields, including medical imaging, nuclear security, nuclear decommissioning, and astronomical applications, among others. To date, scintillators have played pivotal roles in the development of modern science and technology. Among them, plastic scintillators have a low atomic number and are mainly used for beta-ray measurements owing to their low density, but these types of scintillators can be manufactured not in large sizes but also in various forms with distinct properties and characteristics. However, the plastic scintillator is mainly composed of C, H, O and N, implying that the probability of a photoelectric effect is low. In a gamma-ray nuclide analysis, they are used for time-related measurements given their short luminescence decay times. Generally, inorganic scintillators have relatively good scintillation efficiency rates and resolutions. And there are thus widely used in gamma-ray s... [more]

Piotr Sawicki, Hanna Sawicka
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: distribution system, mixed-integer programming, omni-channel, sustainable transport, transport management
This paper deals with the problem of the design and configuration of a distribution system that supports the delivery of goods to customers using various commercial channels. In this sense, a modelled distribution system, called an omni-channel distribution system, should ensure the delivery of the same products in different ways while guaranteeing its highest efficiency. The authors propose a single-criterion mixed-integer programming model for the configuration of a complex distribution system of goods in an omni-channel environment. A minimized cost function, composed of key logistics elements including transport, warehouse location, and manipulation processes, is the objective function. The model was experimentally verified, and as a result, potential savings of around 5−8% of the omni-channel design distribution system costs versus the multi-channel distribution system costs were identified. In the paper, an extended sensitivity analysis is also performed to show how specific para... [more]
Applying a Model of Technology Diffusion to Quantify the Potential Benefit of Improved Energy Efficiency in Data Centres
Bryan Coyne, Eleanor Denny
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: data centres, diffusion, electricity consumption, Energy Efficiency, technology adoption
Data centres are a key infrastructure for the global digital economy, helping enable the EU “Digital Decade” by 2030. In 2015, data centres were estimated to consume 2.5% of EU electricity demand. In Ireland, the concentrated presence of data centres could consume 37% of national electricity demand by 2028. The uncertainty of data centre facility-level energy efficiency paired with the need to achieve a low-carbon economy pose significant challenge for generation and transmission network planning. This is the first paper to apply a model of technology diffusion with a national forecast of changes in Irish data centre electricity demand through more efficient liquid cooling. The methodology serves as a technology-agnostic resource for practitioners performing forecasts under uncertainty with limited information. Results suggest that technology adoption could lower national electricity demand by 0.81% if adopted by new plant from 2019 to 2028. Savings rise to 3.16% over the same period i... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 emissions, discounted payback, HPS, LED, life cycle cost, optimal sizing, PV/battery, street lighting
In this paper, two aspects related to streetlight systems are considered. In the first part, the economic analysis of replacing existing HPS lamps with light-emitting diode (LED) and discrete LED lamps for street lighting is performed using actual data from Oman. The street lighting system inside Sultan Qaboos University is considered for the case study. The discounted payback period, which is calculated to study the practicability of implementing the system, is found to be 1.01 years, making the system financially appealing. Moreover, the estimated reduction of a carbon footprint shows that tonnes of CO2 emissions are reduced, which makes it environmentally attractive. The second part of the paper considers optimal sizing of PV/battery system for a new streetlight system with LED lamps. The life cycle cost analysis was performed and the related cost of energy generated per kWh is estimated as 0.097 $/kWh which proves the economic viability of the system to be implemented in Oman besid... Keywords: cascade pi controller, maximum power point tracking, modeling and simulation, pressure controller, pumping system, variable frequency controller, vector controller, wind energy conversion system
At present, the energy consumption of the pumping unit represents the highest cost in operating a pumping system. Due to this reason, this paper proposes a reliable and robust solution for integrating a wind energy conversion system (WECS) into an already existing pumping system (PS), without being overly intrusive for the PS, and without altering the control strategy or the hardware of the commercial WECS. The current work begins by presenting the modeling undertaken, which includes a WECS with pitchable blades, a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) together with its power converter, a centrifugal pump, an induction motor (IM) with its power converter, and an irrigation network with a pressure transducer. The second part consists of the proposed three-level controller: a general controller that regulates the WECS power demand according to the pumping pressure reference; three second-level controllers; two necessary for the WECS and one for the PS; and three first level controllers,... March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Azerbaijan, Carbon Dioxide, electricity security, Natural Gas, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Azerbaijan signed the Paris Agreement in 2016 and committed to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 35% in 2030. Meanwhile, natural gas has been vital component in the total energy mix of Azerbaijan economy and accounted for almost 65% of the total energy consumption. In the overall electricity mix, natural gas-fired power plants generate 93% of the country’s electricity. Since global energy consumption is responsible for 73% of human-caused greenhouse-gas emissions, and CO2 makes up more than 74% of the total, this study investigates possible mitigation effects of the natural gas consumption on CO2 emissions for Azerbaijan. Author employed several cointegration methodologies, namely Bound testing Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach, Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS), Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS), and Structural Time Series model (STSM). Author of this paper found that when the share of natural gas increases 1 percent in the total energy mix, CO2 emissi... [more]

Keywords: Cumulative Prospect Theory (CPT), Energy Efficiency, energy industry, Industry 4.0, Prospect Theory, Sustainability, technology
Industry 4.0 challenges facilities entrepreneurs to be competitive in the market in terms of energy by rational decision making. The goal of the paper is aimed at introducing Prospect Theory (PT) in Industry 4.0 for making decisions in order to select an optimal energy technology. To reach this goal, an approach for decision making on energy investment has been developed. In this paper, the authors have also provided a new opportunity to apply the new decision making method for strengthening Industry 4.0 by addressing energy concerns based on which rational decisions have been made. The study uses a fuzzy analytical hierarchy process for weighting the evaluation sub-criteria of energy technologies and a modified PT for making decisions related to the selection of one of the investigated technologies. The results show that it is possible to implement PT in Industry 4.0 via a decision making model for energy sustainability. Decision probability was achieved using a behavioral approach ak... [more]

Keywords: analytical differentiable model, control-oriented model, liquid water effects, physically motivated model, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell, water modeling
Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are prone to membrane dehydration and liquid water flooding, negatively impacting their performance and lifetime. Therefore, PEMFCs require appropriate water management, which makes accurate water modeling indispensable. Unfortunately, available control-oriented models only replicate individual water-related aspects or use oversimplistic approximations. This paper resolves this challenge by proposing, for the first time, a control-oriented PEMFC stack model focusing on physically motivated water modeling, which covers phase change, liquid water removal, membrane water uptake, and water flooding effects on the electrochemical reaction. Parametrizing the resulting model with measurement data yielded the fitted model. The parameterized model delivers valuable insight into the water mechanisms, which were thoroughly analyzed. In summary, the proposed model enables the derivation of advanced control strategies for efficient water management a... [more]
